Fragrance in your garden Who doesn’t love wandering through a beautiful garden which arouses the senses and surrounds you with wonderful wafts of fragrance? It is always possible to create a scent garden as long as you have a good sense of smell and know where and what to plant. Many perfumed shrubs exist to help you in your task. There are, for example, the Chinese Viburnum and the Amalanchier (Serviceberry). Daphne bushes offer abundant flowering in shades of pink. Its flowers announce the coming of spring and are highly perfumed. Their fragrance mingles with the hyacinth, the carnation and the spice of cloves in the scent garden. The perfume of the Daphne “Aureomarginata”, a dark green version, is even more powerful. The Chinese Viburnum should be considered as a star of a scent garden, while the Amalanchier is
outstanding in every way, including its colourful berries. This shrub diffuses a soft, slightly vanilla fragrance. All these elements will delight your sense of smell if you plant them near the house, close to the front door, windows, garden benches, bowers and pathways. Choose a site sheltered from air currents so fragrances do not dissipate too quickly and play with complementary perfumes by planting white, red and yellow flowering plants together. These plants are recognized for their fragrance as opposed to orange and blue flowers which are rarely scented. However, fragrances must not compete with one another which is why sweet-scented flowers such as honeysuckle or jasmine should be chosen.
Fragrant flowers and foliage normally keep their scent throughout the season.
Thyme: an alternative to the traditional lawn New and stricter laws concerning the use of herbicides for lawn care have encouraged many homeowners to look for alternatives. One of these consists of replacing your lawn with Thymus serpyllum (wild or creeping thyme)... on condition that the site is a sunny one. With thyme, you will create an ecofriendly lawn which requires no watering, no
fertilization and... no mowing! Contrary to popular belief, wild thyme can be walked on without causing much damage and has the advantage of spreading rapidly. What’s more, during heat waves, thyme doesn’t tend to yellow like a regular lawn would without the necessary water. In addition, the white grub, an insect which is causing more and more damage to grasses in traditional lawns, avoids Thymus serpyllum. There are two methods of creating a lawn of wild thyme, either by using seeds or plants purchased from a local garden centre. Of course, the latter method is more costly but the result is much faster. As well, seeding is not always easy, especially if there are violent storms in the following days. Allow a distance of 25 cm between each plant and after a few months the area will be completely covered. At the beginning of summer, your new lawn will be covered with beautiful little white or pink flowers which will last at least five weeks. The scent of the foliage is another advantage of this choice.

A buying guide for budding gardeners Unless you’re an expert gardener, you might not find it easy to make the right choices when the time comes to buy plants at a garden centre. There is such a wide variety of vegetable seedlings and annual and perennial decorative plants! If you don’t have a plant encyclopedia at hand as you browse the greenhouse, you may get lost in the maze of Latin names. A first piece of advice would be to avoid any plants that don’t look like they’re thriving, as they probably won’t survive the transplantation process. They could also import disease and parasites into your garden. Perennials Purchase perennials in the spring so they can have all summer to develop. Before bringing home any plants, be sure to check that the soil in the pot is moist and that there are no weeds or moss on the surface — those are an indication of poor drainage or that the plant has been potted for too long.
shrubs Foliage is the first thing to inspect when buying a shrub. Look for good colour, and make sure the branches are evenly distributed and have abundant foliage at the base. Avoid specimens with sparse, long, or unequal growth and with few or no visible buds, as these are a sign that the shrub has lacked water and nutrients during development. Take the shrub out of its pot and check its root system for rotting or parasites. roses Gently shake the main branch of a rose bush to ensure it is well rooted. A well-developed specimen will possess strong, evenly distributed branches, with masses of healthy, vigorous foliage with good colour. Check for parasites or diseases, such as rust and black spot, as bushes infected with them will never recover.
Gardening with children - what a joy! Initiating children into the joys of gardening allows them to discover the treasures of nature, and of course children just love treasure! To create some unforgettable moments with your little ones all you’ll need is a sunny corner of the yard or a few pots, some soil, seeds, and basic tools. If this is your first attempt, be sure to choose plants that are easy to grow. Beans, peas, radishes, and spinach give quick results that will delight your children. Mark off a part of your vegetable plot or turn over some turf and add compost and topsoil. If you have more than one child, make a small garden for each of them to avoid squabbles. Alternately, make a container garden using clean containers with drainage holes. Place them where they’ll receive at least six hours of sunshine a day. Ensure that your children have their own tools. All they need is a dibble, fork, spade, and small watering can. There is no need for “play” tools; show them how to work the earth with proper tools, just like grownups. Set aside a small part of the vegetable garden for your children and teach them how to take care of it.
Ask your children to make a sign to identify each row of plants. If they don’t know how to print, they could make a drawing of the plant in question. Attach signs to sticks and stake them at the end of each row. Show children how to take care of their garden on a daily basis. To keep it enjoyable, only give them a few plants to care for in the beginning. Watering and weeding require perseverance and patience, but
children will be motivated as soon as shoots start to appear. And just think of how proud they’ll feel when their very own vegetables are featured on the family’s dinner plates!
