Hatzic Prairie, Durieu, McConnell Creek Ratepayers Association president Sharie Conroy examines the rock in Pattison Creek. She worries any logging up stream will bring more debris to the area.

Residents voice slide concerns Helicopter logging will be used to harvest 49 hectares of land on north side of Pattison Creek Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
Tamihi Logging Company (TLC) will be proceeding with plans to log 49 hectares of Crown land on the north side of Pattison Creek this year, according to TLC manager Ted Holtby. Holtby and Westrek geologist Tim Smith met with Hatzic Valley residents last Thursday night at McConnell Creek Hall to explain the plan and listen to concerns including landslides. About 75 residents attended the meeting to try to convince the logging company to recon-
sider its plans. “We have opposite points of view,” said Holtby after the meeting. “We’re still proceeding. We have a right to be there.” The harvest will be done by helicopter, said Holtby, who recognized the need for various levels of tree retention in the area. “It’s a partial harvest,” he stated, noting the area will be separated into three blocks. About 85 per cent of trees will be removed from the largest block, and 35 per cent will be removed from each of the remaining two areas. One helicopter will be used,
and it will generally run seven days a week, weather permitting, explained Holtby, adding the aircraft will not operate before 7 a.m. It’s difficult to predict how long logging will go on because the work is dependent on good weather, but if 800 cubic metres are harvested in an eight-hour work day, then logging should be finished in about 23 days, said Holtby, estimating 18 to 20 truckloads will be hauled out during weekdays. Smith studied the ground in the area for six months and
determined an old logging road built in the 1940s posed the biggest risk to the valley. Unmaintained drainage structures are impeding drainage patterns on the mountain, which increases the likelihood of a landslide initiated along the route, he said, recommending deactivation of the road, which would require an excavator to stabilize the hill. Such plans would have to be discussed with the Ministry of Forest Lands and Natural Resource Operations as well as the Scowlitz First Nations, which holds the licence for the area.

With the road deactivated, Smith said he is confident the slide risk is low. “What [TLC is] doing, in my professional opinion, won’t increase the risk of a slide,” said Smith. But area residents disagreed. “There are huge water problems when it rains hard,” said one speaker. “You’ll never see them if you don’t go there when it rains … chances are something will happen if you log it. Even if you don’t log, there’s still a problem. It’s a safety risk up there.” There are 14 creeks in the CONTINUED ON 5

District not joining in new recycling program types of packaging and printed paper (PPP). The program is intended to compel those who produce paper and packaging to also be in charge of having it recycled – putting residential recycling in control of industry. Industry representatives will increase the costs of products to pay for the collection and processing of PPP from the curb, multi-family units and depots. As the PPP program cost is set by each producer and incorporated into the cost of the product, the cost for recycling will not be transparent to the consumer. Mission isn’t the only community that doesn’t like what the program is offering so far. Abbotsford is also opting out, and an alliance of business groups including the newspaper industry is opposed to the new recycling system – demanding the province halt the planned May 19 launch and reconsider the program.
It’s been a bitter fight with small business groups that complain they are set to pay punishing high fees, which would then be passed on to consumers. Earlier this month, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business and eight other associations launched a campaign in B.C. newspapers and online at rethinkitbc.ca to increase the pressure on Victoria. CFIB provincial affairs director Mike Klassen predicted job losses and some business closures as a result of the MMBC regulations and fees. The opposition groups say they support the aim of the program but dispute the fees and say multinational consumer goods firms control MMBC and are manipulating it to their benefit, not that of local businesses. Most of the fees for container waste are double or even quadruple what businesses in Ontario pay to a similar agency.

Mission will not be participating in a new recycling program scheduled to come into effect across the province in May. The district wants more information about Multi Material BC (MMBC) and is paying close attention to how other communities adjust to the program before signing on, said Mission’s environmental coordinator Jennifer Meier. She said the current incentives offered are not enough to cover Mission’s costs to run its current curbside recycling program. There would be service reductions for Mission residents under the MMBC plan as the existing program collects materials at the curb that MMBC will not, such as glass and plastic film. “We’re talking to them and willing to negotiate to be a part of it in the future,” she added. MMBC is an industry stewardship group that the province has charged with recycling all

Hatzic Valley that run into Legace Creek, just north of Dale Road. Pattison is the largest water course in that system, and it flows into Hatzic Lake before reaching the Fraser River. “We have water coming down too fast to a creek that’s already full of sediment,” maintained Sharie Conroy presi-
dent of Hatzic Prairie, Durieu and McConnell Creek Ratepayers Association. “The water can’t get to Hatzic Lake fast enough, so it floods.” No logging should be considered until the creeks are cleaned and a plan is in place to keep them clean, said Conroy. Residents pointed to 2003 flooding as an example of their worst fears, when
naturally unstable. There have been 184 landslides in the Hatzic Valley region between 1952 and 2005. According to the report, authored by Tom Millard, research geomorphologist, 134 of those were related to forestry activity, and only 10 have occurred since 1993. TLC could begin removing trees from the area as early as mid-May.
half a dozen creeks, including Pattison and Legace, spilled their banks as rocks rolled down the mountainside. Abbotsford-Mission MLA Simon Gibson said a lot of money has been spent on drainage already, but the problem is ongoing because the slopes of Durieu Ridge within the Cascade watershed, of which Pattison Creek is a part, are

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Purge the culture of entitlement
If we have learned anything from last year’s Senate expense scandals, and the recent revelations concerning former Alberta premier Alison Redford’s travel expenses, it’s that this is a problem that crosses all party lines and involves all political stripes. A recent example being the vacation expenses billed by NDP MLA Jenny Kwan to the Portland Hotel Society, a not-forprofit organization already under fire for its expenses record. Kwan’s subsequent repayment of the sum was a reason for rejoicing on the right. That jubilation has been tempered by the recent revelation of travel expenses billed by B.C. legislature Speaker Linda Reid, a BC Liberal MLA, for her husband – so that he could join her on a trip to South Africa.
In addition to issuing a public apology, Reid has also repaid the sum in total. Whatever the mitigating circumstances of each case, neither inspires confidence in our system. Abusing public trust and dipping into public funds is, or should be, indefensible, no matter the spluttering rants of entrenched ideologues on the left or the right, who will always claim that whatever the other party did is worse. With politicians going on to reap the rewards of generous pensions, lucrative posts and valuable consultancies, it’s no wonder so many average Canadians walk in the other direction when urged to exercise their democratic rights. The political culture of entitlement must be purged. – Black Press

YOUR VIEWS Home mail service should be kept Re: Choosing whether to vaccinate is a personal decision, March 21 edition. Mrs. Anthony claims that receiving vaccinations for health and well being should be a choice and not deemed as irresponsible. She asserts that her child has health issues now because of a vaccination. She also compares the use of vaccination to the use of breast milk for infants. I respectively disagree with Mrs. Anthony. Not vaccinating
is very risky for not only the person who is not vaccinated, but to their friends, family, colleagues and any person they come into contact with. Vaccinations have been deemed by many medical studies and doctors to be very safe and can save a lot of time and money for the vaccinated. I would rather not be exposed to potential hazards because of someone not having the vaccination to prevent the sickness. Not vaccinating causes a lot
of risk and no one should have to face the risk when numerous vaccinations have been proven to stop the spread and the existence of diseases. I encourage anybody to research and see that vaccinations are helping people all over the world combat and prevent diseases. Receiving vaccinations is not only going to help our current population but for generations to come. Sarah O’Donnell Abbotsford
Others at risk due to parents’ decisions Re: Choosing whether to vaccinate is a personal decision, March 21 edition. Comparing breastfeeding to vaccinations has to be the lamest analogy I’ve ever heard. Last time I checked, breastfeeding was not contagious. If I, however, decide to send my Grade 2 child to school with a loaded gun in his/her backpack for show and tell, my child would be turfed and I would be in the slammer before midnight – and rightly so – because all would be there for everyone to see.
The non-vaccinated child does not have a sign on their back stating that fact, so the parents of that child are playing Russian roulette with my child’s health. Your choice not to vaccinate stops at the inside of your front door. Do not put others at risk because of your misguided decisions. Keep your kids at home until this outbreak has passed. Or, heaven forbid, get them vaccinated. Your decision to put others at risk is uncaring, thoughtless, and downright frightening.
The Big Guy upstairs that I talk to has never advised me to be either of these,

LEARNING TO SOW GOOD SEEDS Just as farmers’ will sow seeds in order to raise their crops, those who follow God’s ways are sowing seeds of our Lord’s love. In the Bible, we are told the Parable of the Sower, who scattered his seeds in the field: some seeds fell along the path and the birds ate them; some fell on rocky ground where there was little soil; and, some fell among the thorn bushes, which grew up and choked the plants. But still, some seeds fell upon good soil, and these plants sprouted and bore much grain. Our Lord explains this Parable by saying that some people hear the message and disregard it, while other’s receive the message, but when trouble and persecution comes they simply give up. Still, there are others who hear the message, but the worries and concerns about this life choke out the good news. And then, there are those who hear the message, accept it, and bear much fruit. The way we live our lives should be an example for those around us, and we should try to reflect the love and compassion of our Heavenly Father. Nurturing and improving our relationship with God, and living our lives in a way that is pleasing to Him, will help us to sow seeds that bear good fruit.
You did not choose me; I chose you and appointed you to go and bear much fruit, the kind of fruit that endures. Good News Bible John 15:16

Under its new regulations, the BC Government has set up an association led by big corporations to take over the local Blue Box recycling program throughout BC. If you look closely, you’ll see that of seven board members, six are executives of Toronto-based multi-national corporations, with the seventh weighing in from Montreal. How do you like that, British Columbia? This means, unlike the current program run locally by BC municipalities, this new program will be managed not by people whose first responsibility is our local environment, but rather, their Bay St. profits. That can’t be a good thing for BC. The most perplexing thing is that we currently have a Blue Box program that works, is efficient, and costs BC homeowners just
$35 a year on average. The new proposed system does not guarantee to keep our local environment as its first priority, nor does it guarantee that there won’t be job losses here in BC. It doesn’t guarantee service levels, or say anything about how big business will pass along the costs to you when you go to pick up a pizza or buy groceries. Yikes! Perhaps this is why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to sign onto the new program, calling it a “scam.” Given that, maybe it’s time you called Premier Clark to keep BC’s environmental decisions right here in BC where they belong.
What’s going on here?

Canadian musician Laura Gillespie will be taking on a new role as she tours the province performing. While singing and playing music is nothing new for the Nova Scotia native, Gillespie will be playing the part of iconic Canadian singer Anne Murray. This is the first time Gillespie has put together a tribute show and is looking forward to portraying one of her all-time favourite musicians. “I love Anne,” Gillespie said. “I was brought up with her music and I think she’s fantastic.” Gillespie, whose mother was a huge fan of Murray’s, has been singing songs like Snowbird, Danny’s Song, and You Needed Me since she was a young girl.
Canadian musician Laura Gillespie and Mission band Topaz will be touring the province in Snowbird, a tribute to Anne Murray. The show comes to Mission on April 4. SUBMITTED PHOTO Gillespie has been singing for 25 years, and has been a part of a number of different bands touring the world. But Gillespie got reacquainted with Murray’s music after her mom passed away. “I found a box of CDs in a drawer,” Gillespie explained. “I started getting into songs I’ve never heard before.”
She played them over and over again. She relished in the up-front vocals and how every word could be heard. Now at age 47, Gillespie is bringing Murray’s music to her West Coast fans again. “We start with her later hits, then move back in time to the beginning when it all started,” said Gillespie about the show, which is coming to the Clarke Theatre April 4. “I’ve learned so much about [Murray] and her accomplishments just doing the show.” The Anne Murray tribute show, called Snowbird, comes to Mission on April 4. The Clarke Theatre is located at 33700 Prentis St. The show starts at 7 p.m. For more info call 604-820-3961 or visit snowbirdannemurraytribute.com.

Burning of construction debris, demolition waste, garbage or land clearing debris (large burn piles) is strictly prohibited in the District at any time. Further information on burning can be found on the District of Mission website at www.mission.ca
If your property is located outside the garbage pickup area you are permitted to burn yard debris only between April 1st to April 30th (30 days) in the spring and in the fall from November 1st to November
Around Town Town Hall Forum: April 1 The next Town Hall Forum will be held at Municipal Hall on Tuesday, April 1. Join the Mayor and members of Council to discuss topics that are of importance to you. The forum runs from 7 to 9 p.m. For those who cannot join us, the forum will be web cast at www.mission.ca.
Contain Your Waste Households in the curbside collection area receive collection of up to two bins of garbage per
week. Bins must be no be larger than 80 litres and feature a tightÀtting lid to prevent birds and other animals from accessing and scattering garbage. Garbage in bags is only acceptable during Spring Cleanup Week, or if it is over the weekly two-bin limit and features an extra garbage sticker (available at City Hall). Over-thelimit garbage can be avoided by separating recyclables and compost (food and yard waste) from garbage. Both recyclables and compost are collected in unlimited amounts every week.
Separating food waste alone will cut your garbage in half. Litter cleanup is expensive, and the cost is borne by all taxpayers. Please ensure that your garbage is properly contained and stored inside until the morning of collection day to avoid undue expense to the entire community. For more information on Mission’s curbside collection program, visit the Waste Management Pages at www.mission.ca, e-mail engineering@mission.ca or call 604-820-3736.
Election 2014 It may seem a long way off, but preparations are well underway for this year’s municipal election. The next BC General Local Election will be held on Saturday, November 15. Since 1990, BC general local elections for mayors, councillors, regional district electoral area directors, school board trustees and Island Trust trustees have been held every three years. On February 25, 2014 the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development announced that the BC government will be introducing legislation to change local government elections from a three-year term to a four-year term. If this legislation passes, the next BC local election after November 2014 will be in October 2018. The 2014 election in Mission will be for Mayor, six councillors and four school trustees. You may vote in a BC local election as a resident elector if you are a Canadian citizen; are 18 years of age or more on general voting day; have lived in BC for at least 6 months before you register to vote; and have lived in the District of Mission for 30 days or more before you register to vote. All District of Mission residents who meet these requirements can vote. It does not matter whether you rent or own your home. For more information about running for ofÀce or voting in the November election, please visit www.mission.ca/elections

He started out as a long-distance runner, and trained in martial arts for close to seven years before buying his first mountain bike. “I wanted to do some more cardio.” Geoff enjoyed the mountain bike, but didn’t feel it was fast enough, and soon switched to a road bike. In no time, Geoff was as comfortable on his bike seat as he was on his couch. He rides about 200 km some days. “I ride everywhere,” says Geoff, who lives at Luther Place on Seventh Avenue. Returning to work after retirement
R
etirement plans changed with the economy for many Canadians, especially as some saw their retirement savings portfolio shrink significantly. Now, instead of planning for retirement, Canadians are beginning to worry about outliving their savings. A poll by the Royal Bank of Canada showed 75 per cent of retired Canadians were not aware of how much money they spent in their first year of retirement. And for those who did know, about half said it was more than expected. There are many things to consider before exiting the workforce. While some older Canadians are planning to fully embrace the life retirement brings, there are others who find a complete break from work more difficult or no longer have the savings they anticipated. For them, scaling back hours or working parttime are viable options. And in some cases, it is not always about the money. According to Statistics Canada, one-fifth of retired
individuals had completed paid work after their retirement. More than half of the people surveyed cited reasons other than financial for returning to the work force. Some said they did not like retirement, while others enjoyed the rewards of working. And retirees going back to work do not always return to their previous vocations, but instead look for new challenges for their skills. Retirees returning to the workforce do often face tax implications. Depending on your existing pension, earning additional income may mean a reduction of
government income. It is important to investigate your tax situation before you start a new job. CPP rules have recently changed to reflect the fact more older Canadians are working past the age of 65. Under the old rules, people between 60 and 65 who wanted to start receiving retirement pension early had to stop working for at least two months. If they subsequently went back to work, they did not have to resume contributing to the plan. Now people no longer need to stop working in order to receive retirement pension. However, if they

do continue to work while receiving a pension, they will have to continue making contributions, which will increase their monthly entitlement. Under the old system, if you decided to take CPP at 70, your pension was 30 per cent more than it would have been if you took it at age 65. Under the new rules, that same delay will give you a 42 per cent increase. If you have an employer pension plan, there may be restrictions on work after retirement in the collective agreement. Again, check your situation before taking a new job. Your tax situation may be helped if you are able to take advantage of the pension income-splitting option. This allows eligible pension income to be split with a spouse or common-law partner to help lower your tax payable.

Dental Implants gave us a confident smile
This couple have something to smile about. They used to wear dentures, which caused discomfort, an inability to eat many foods and a lack of confidence when it came to smiling and talking.
Now they enjoy the freedom of NobelSmile dental implants, which are as close to natural teeth as you can get. People who lose a tooth want to replace it with something permanent, says Dr. Lui, instead of something they have to remove. “Once you give someone new, permanent teeth, you can see their personality shine through again.”
“Whether you have a single tooth, several teeth or every one of them missing...we can help.”

Question of the week:
Driveway readers to spend billions to buy a new set of wheels Driveway readers are in the mood to splash out an astonishing $3.6 billion-plus of their hard-earned cash to buy new vehicles this year. This is not some by Keith Morgan wild, optimistic prediction but a solid forecast based on what our readers revealed in a comprehensive survey conducted on behalf of Black Press by Pulse Research, a company with 30 years of experience in asking the right questions of consumers. In a series of wide-ranging interviews, Black Press newspaper readers from all over the province gave Pulse a comprehensive account of their spending plans. Their intention to spend $53.1 million on fish and chips, $45.8 million on tooth whitening, $13.1 million on tattoos or piercing, $9.1 million on pet toys and $1.9 million on tuxedos, raised some smiles. But the auto spending intent grabbed our serious attention. A massive 123,275 households will take vehicles for a spin and sign on the dotted line. A massive 51,895 will park a new car on their driveway, 32,312 will house a sport ute in their garage, while another 28,395 will opt for a truck out front. Most people surveyed knew what kind of wheels they would be looking for and what they were prepared to pay.

I can remember buying my first truck in 1986 like it was yesterday. It had to be a specific make and model I was looking for. A Toyota 4x4 pick-up, black in color and it had to be in good shape. I wanted it to be bone stock with as little mileage as possible. I found one in the paper, it was on a lot at a dealership in Surrey. Quickly I called them to inquire and they said they had a couple of people with deals written up, but it didn’t look like they were going to go through, so if I wanted it I had better get down there right away (naive at that age to fall for an old trick like this). I had to get a ride from a friend and I remember it was snowing, so it was slow getting there. When I arrived, it was running and they were anxious for me to drive it. I took it around the block and parked it in

a vacant lot, hopped out and started to inspect it. I immediately noticed rust and some body damage. Clearing the snow off inside the truck box, I could see more damage. It looked like someone had dropped a bowling ball into it from a high ledge. I could smell antifreeze and noticed some oil leaks. I headed back to the dealership disappointed. The salesman was there to greet me. He asked if I had any concerns and I started to point out the obvious. He quickly dismissed them as
cosmetic and said do you want to write a deal on it because he has people in the showroom wanting to buy it. I told him I was not interested. On the ride home, I thought how quickly I had to grow up and look at everything as if someone was going to take advantage of me; a sad reality. The next day I picked up the latest copy of Truck Trader and spotted the exact make and model I was looking for. I bought the 1983 edition for $9,000 from a family that only used
it once a week to drive to Abbotsford and back to Coquitlam for supplies. It was perfect; funny how God puts things in your path and everything works out in the end. A week later I started to work on it. I acquired some used 33 inch tires and installed a 4” lift kit. I drove that truck every night after work to show it off. I washed it so many times I thought the paint was going to come off. A year had passed and I purchased many more items for the truck. A major car show was coming up soon and I decided I would put it in the back of the shop and work on it so I could enter it into the show. Giving up my truck for a month was tough and I had to make a few sacrifices to get around. My first car show was a hit. I came in second place and I was determined the folcontinued on page 29

just can’t keep it anymore,” I lied. In reality, I imported the car from Washington. It came with documents that mentioned New York State. The title was clean, so I assumed it was in good condition. I priced the vehicle quite high – well over its value. But he didn’t know, and he didn’t ask any more questions. I told him I had another buyer interested (another lie), and that he had to make a decision right away. With no hesitation, he got a bank draft and I gave him the keys. Like I promised, I threw in the new tire gauge. Marty gave me a wink and slowly drove off. Another foolish customer, I thought. No history report to keep me on my toes. And worse, he needs to get it inspected, registered and insured within 30 days - I didn’t bother. I just got my buddy in Bellingham to help me get it across. That evening, I took out the papers I’d received with the car. I decided to go over them more thoroughly. I guess I was a bit bored. Turns out, the vehicle had been registered in four U.S. states. Somewhere along the line, the rebuild* status was dropped. Probably intentionally. The inspection and ICBC will catch that. And who knows if the odometer is right? At least it’s no longer mine. *Rebuild – A vehicle written off as a total loss by an insurance company, then rebuilt and certified for use. This term does not describe a vehicle that has a new or repaired motor, transmission or other major part. Rebuilds offer savings when repaired well, but a buyer has a right to know it was rebuilt. But this buyer didn’t and Walt walked away with the cash.

It’s only been a month, but I can see myself selling cars for a long, long time. I feel like a new man. One evening, I was in line at the superstore. An elderly gentleman saw my shopping cart. I had a new digital tire gauge that I was going to give to my next buyer. Turns out he was looking for a used car as he’d recently given his car to his grandson. He just needed something basic. “This is your lucky day!” I told him. The old fellow was around my father-in-law’s age – close to 80. He walked with a cane and had two ear pieces. I was practically shouting to him. What an easy sale. I decided to give him a ride and show him the car. He went on to tell me about his young granddaughter, too. At any rate, we got to the car – it was a base model with an automatic transmission. “It’s perfect for you, sir!” I exclaimed. He got in and sat at the wheel. His face lit up right away. I could tell that he’d been a car enthusiast in his younger days. “Where’d you get this car, son?” he asked me. “It’s my dad’s old car – he passed away and I

lowing year I would be back with something they have never seen before. I poured most of my paycheques into my truck and took it off the road for two months to prepare for its transformation. I called up the owner of Interco Tire and asked about some Super Swamper tires. He said he had a set of 44x18.5x15 tires in his office that nobody has seen before. At that time the largest they made were 42”. I told him to send them to me I would figure out what I had to do to fit them under the truck. When they came in they looked big. So big I was getting worried. The custom leaf springs came back from the spring shop and I knew my calculations were correct. With all the multiple shocks in place, chassis freshly painted, motor work done, and lower gears installed, it was ready for the tires. I cleared away the debris pile that accumulated around my truck.
Placed the floor jack under the rear axle and started to jack it up. With the rear tires on and clearing the fenders it was time to move to the front. When I started to lift the front I noticed how high the hood was getting, at that point I knew I had built a monster. With all the tires in place, I slowly drove it out of the shop. The sun gleaming down on the freshly polished paint and the smell of paint burning off the exhaust system still sticks in my mind. Outside it looked like a beast; people were slowing down to take a look. The show was a week later and I came home with first place. Mission accomplished. It was worth every penny of the $12,000 I put into it. Then I sold it for $15,500 in 1990 so that I could afford to get married . . . need I say more? Tell me your truck story and please send pictures.

In Loving Memory of Frieda Driessen A special Mom we had, for that we know is true, You gave to us abundantly in every way of you. Your beautiful smile & sparkling eyes, the way you made us laugh, You left this earth so peacefully, as you traveled Heaven’s path. Your memory gives us strength, it’s what guides us through, God greeted the best Mom ever, the day that He welcomed you. So whenever we are lonely and need a loving hand, We know that you will guide us, in life to understand. That each day you walk beside us, we will never be alone, One day we’ll walk beside you, when God calls us home.

(nee Fast) Following a brief but very brave battle with cancer, Tina passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Saviour with her loving husband at her bedside on March 22, 2014. She was a dedicated wife, mom, grandma, greatgrandma, sister, aunt, friend and neighbour who will be deeply missed by her husband John of 57 years, four sons; Ken (Conny), Jim (Lucy), Carl (Christine) and Steve (Chris); 13 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; siblings Anni, John (Mary), Arnie (Maria); and sister-in-law Carol. Predeceased by her brother Hank. Tina was born on August 14, 1937 in Alexanderfield, Ukraine. She immigrated to Canada with her family as a young child, where they settled in Arnold, BC. She met John Coers in 1954 and they married on October 6, 1956. They eventually settled in Sumas Prairie and started their own family dairy farm on Cole Road April 1, 1968. Many years later they retired from farming in November 1996. Her door was always open to family and friends with a cup of coffee and something baked. She enjoyed many activities which included travelling and camping, shopping for bargains, bowling (43 years), watching curling, knitting, baking, and reading. Tina had a strong faith and she was involved in a variety of activities within her church, including dedicated support of their missionaries. The family would like to extend our very sincere thanks to the staff and volunteers at Christine Morrison Memorial Hospice. A celebration of Tina’s life will be held on Friday, April 4th, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Grace Church, 2087 McMillan Road, Abbotsford, BC. He also worked with industrial machinery and as a Realtor before retiring. In the 1960’s when he visited the West coast he fell in love with the rugged nature, the wide-open space of the Fraser Valley, and the beaches of Vancouver Island. He saw a great future for our sons, Ted, Kjell and Johan. Len loved fishing, goldpanning, hiking and mushroom picking - anything that brought us to the outdoors. We got to know wonderful friends and neighbours forever. In time we celebrated our sons’ weddings and many loving grandchildren. All these happy years went by so fast. Our Len. In Loving Memory of Jenny de Jong (Hubach) May 21, 1927 ~ March 24, 2014
After a long battle with various illnesses over many years, Jenny de Jong (Hubach) was promoted to the eternal peace she longed for, by her redeemer Jesus Christ. Her faith in God was steadfast throughout her nearly 87 years. Jenny died peacefully in her home, March 24, 2014. Jenny was born in Ijselmuiden, Holland, May 21, 1927, and raised in Kampen, in the Netherlands. She worked away from home as a young teenager to help her family during WW2. In later years she became a care giver for many elderly and ill people. She met her husband to be, Henk de Jong, who had immigrated to Canada, and was living in Telkwa, BC, by being pen pals with him. After Henk made a trip back to Holland to meet Jenny in 1952, they were engaged to be married. Henk returned to Canada. When she could, Jenny also immigrated to BC. They were bonded in marriage on June 5, 1953, in Telkwa, BC. They had four children while living and working in the Bulkley Valley for 20 years. They moved to Surrey, BC, where they lived for 14 years. In 1987 they moved to Abbotsford, BC where they eventually retired, and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. With heartfelt sadness Jenny will be lovingly remembered and missed by her loving husband Henk, their four children: Alice (Bob) Veysey, Peter (Nellie) de Jong, Renee (Albert) Santema, and Jenny Marcus, and by her 12 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. Funeral Service will be held in the Emanuel Free Reformed Church on Mt. Lehman Road, Abbotsford, BC on March 29 at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of choice.
RATZLAFF Eric It is with a profound sense of loss that we share the passing of Eric Ratzlaff, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. After an all too brief battle with pancreatic cancer, Eric passed peacefully into the eternal presence of his Lord on March 25, 2014 with his wife and daughters by his side. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Martha Ratzlaff and two sisters, Edith Leona Ratzlaff and Betty Phillips. He is survived by his loving family, wife of almost 53 years Katie, daughters Catherine, Marcy (Randy), Trish (Laurie) and Carolyn (Jason); grandchildren Caleb, Sarah, Amber, Calvin, Kate, Kelsey and Eliot. Eric lived his Christian faith on a daily basis, modeling his Heavenly Father’s love to those he encountered. Eric found immense fulfillment in his 37 years of teaching and delighted in meeting former students and colleagues. He enjoyed his many walks in the community and around Mill Lake. A memorial celebration will be held at Bakerview M.B. Church on Thursday, April 3rd at 1:30 pm. Thank-you to all those medical professionals who provided care to Eric and his family.
