He is cute and popular with visitors, but his days of hanging out at the Oak Bay Marina are numbered. An otter has been regularly appearing on a dock where visitors frequently feed harbour seals with fish purchased from the marina gift shop. However, when he appears, he isn’t shy about what he wants – his cut of either seal or human food. “He’s not afraid of people,” said Susan Barcham, communications and corporate affairs director for the marina. “He will jump right onto the dock and get very close to people.” Visitors love the otter but Barcham said people are forgetting he’s a wild animal with sharp teeth and claws. Due to his lack of fear and the potential for human injury as tourist season begins, the marina plans to relocate the furry creature. So far, Barcham is unaware of the otter injuring anyone. “He is very, very cute, but he is a wild animal and people need to be careful,” Barcham said. “We want to be humane so we are going trap him and move him out.” Otters do periodically appear at the marina, but they are never this fearless, Barcham said, and while visitors may love seeing them, a lot of boaters don’t. “They tend to be a boater’s nemesis,” she said. “They will get up onto boats and make a mess. They will get under tarpaulin, into any opening they can find and hang out for a while.” The marina plans to relocate the otter as soon as possible. reporter@vicnews.com

This pesky sea otter has taken to hanging out at the Oak Bay Marina, stealing food from the local seal population as well as a few humans. While he attracts quite a bit of attention from visitors, he could cause damage to boats and is dangerous to people as well, so marina staff will relocate the creature.

Traditional Japanese martial art draws new blood Christopher Sun News staff
Sensei Chris Tooley wants to draw new blood to his samurai swordsmanship class but doesn’t want any spilling on the floor. Tooley teaches Iaido, a traditional Japanese martial art that is commonly associated with samurai and swords. While it does have a gruesome past, Iaido is practiced as a non-combative art, which exercises the mind, body and spirit, Tooley said. “I think it’s a very beautiful martial art,” the 31-year old said. “The movements are really precise. It’s not explosive and frantic. Practicing Iaido is a very relaxing thing for me.” Practicing Iaido requires being at ease and focus. One must be acutely aware of every arm, leg and body motion as it must correspond with the offensive motions of the opponent. The first movement beginners learn is to walk forward to an imaginary opponent, draw the sword, cut across horizontally and then straight down vertically in a precise
and efficient fashion. “You have to imagine the opponent you have to cut, which is kind of gross,” Tooley said. “You have to get past that and think of it as an art.” The movements become increasingly elaborate and precise as one progresses and that is when the cutting starts to look and feel artistic. While the samurai warrior class has been around since at least the 10th Century, Iaido in its current form was officially recognized in Japan in 1932. Iaido beginners use a wooden sword known as a bokuto, before graduating to a blunt metal sword called an iaito, to the actual samurai-type sword, known as a katana. However, it is not necessary to move up to the sharper sword – which can easily cost more than $1,000 and weighs one kilogram – as the point of Iaido is movement and artistic practice. A wooden sword costs about $25. One can easily hurt themselves or others with a real sword if the wrong kind is used, as fast, sudden movements can cause the blade to break off, sending it flying across the room. Tooley was first exposed to Iaido at 16 by watching his father practicing it on the front porch of their home in the Yukon. Enthralled by what he saw, he signed up and has been practicing since. “I thought, ‘wow, that’s really cool,’” Tooley said.
“You get to play with a sword.” Tooley started teaching Iaido at Monterey Centre on Saturday afternoons earlier this month, he has taught in Saanich nine years. The Iaido he teaches is in line with the style taught in Japan, where he often visits to learn from higher ranking sensei, or teachers. There is a nominal cost to attend classes, but instructors like Tooley are unpaid as money goes towards renting the facility and to support the nonprofit Canadian Iaido Association. The association, which is based in Victoria, is linked to the All Japan Iaido Federation and administers exams and holds seminars in Canada. Tooley is the Canadian association’s treasurer. Sensei from Japan routinely come to Canada to make sure the practice is being taught properly. Iaido can be practiced by people of all ages, who are encouraged to work within their comfort zone. However, one needs to be in reasonably good health. “It might not be good if you’ve got problem with your knees,” Tooley said. “Seiza is the traditional Japanese way of
sitting and that can be very uncomfortable for people in North America. But that’s fine, you don’t have to sit that way. “If you have a lot of health issues, it might be quite difficult to do the movements properly.” To register for a class email iaido. canada@gmail.com or call 250-885-2000. Fighting for seniors Beacon Community Services leader Isobel Mackenzie takes on new role as province’s first seniors advocate

The executive director of Beacon Community Services and former Greater Victoria School District trustee Isobel Mackenzie is B.C.’s first seniors advocate. The announcement was made last week by Health Minister Terry Lake. The seniors’ advocate position is the first of its kind in Canada. Like B.C.’s representative for children and youth, Mackenzie will be expected to investigate allegations of abuse and keep an eye on the government care system. The posting was first proposed after a 2011 investigation by B.C.’s ombudsperson uncovered a wide range of problems with the system and made 176 recommendations. Mackenzie officially begins her new job March 31, where she is charged with acting as the voice of seniors in B.C. to monitor and review systemwide issues affecting their wellbeing. Already, Mackenzie has been busy, fielding questions, granting interviews and working with a $2-million annual budget to set up her office. She is also transitioning out of her job as executive director of Beacon Community Services, a position she has held since 1995. Mackenzie said she wants to meet with seniors, advocates, families and supporting organizations early in her mandate. “I want to hear from seniors, the government and the opposition,” she told the News.
“There needs to be a better job done in telling people about their rights, the services that are available and how each of their choices has consequences, good and bad.”

“I want to hear what people think are the issues and the priorities.” Mackenzie, who comes to the job with more than 18 years of experience working on behalf of seniors at various levels, said she plans on holding meetings over the first few weeks after the end of the month. She said her office will need to prioritize the issues that come up. Tapping into her experience and resources, Mackenzie said one of her main roles will be to help bring together a fractured system of seniors’ supports. Realizing that the seniors advocate could be inundated with individual requests or concerns, she said there needs to be a way to reach people with the tools to access every option available to them. “There needs to be a better job done in telling people about their rights, the services that are available and how each of their choices has consequences, good and bad. People right now have
a difficult time navigating through that system.” Her office, she said, cannot deal with individual cases. Instead, Mackenzie said she must consult with advocacy groups and seniors on a broad scale to determine where concerns lie across the province. That being said, Mackenze said she sees the advocate’s office as a resource, where people can turn to be pointed in the right direction. “We do not investigate individual complaints,” she explained. “There are organizations like consumer protection, health authorities and patient review boards that deal with specific issues. “There are always going to be individual issues, but I will be consulting mostly with groups.” People can turn to the office of the advocate in times of need, she added. Be prepared for a disaster This week B.C.’s auditor general Russ Jones released his report on how prepared – or unprepared – the province is in the event of a catastrophic earthquake. Not surprisingly, and echoing a 1997 report from the same office, Jones finds neither the province or Emergency Management B.C. is adequately ready for such a disaster. The province and agencies may not be prepared and must take immediate steps to correct this situation, but so do we as individuals and private companies. All of us must recognize that a disaster, and not just an earthquake, could affect us at any time. A major snowstorm or windstorm, such as we’ve seen in recent years, could shut down the region for days. A hazardous waste spill is always a concern and the recent landslide in Washington state is simply one more example of an emergency that could befall us. Common sense and local emergency preparedness programs tells us we need to be ready for seven days without support during an emergency. This means having adequate food, water and shelter as a bare minimum for a week. Other groups recommend more; the Mormon church suggests that members have at least a three-month supply of food on hand. We need to ask ourselves what else we need for survival. Do we have cash on hand if banking services are disrupted? Do we have extra, charged batteries for cellphones and other mobile devices that we depend on so much these days? We must also ensure that our supplies are easily accessible during any emergency scenario. This could include being somewhere other than at home during such a situation. Do you have an emergency kit in your car or at your office? If you are a business owner, what do you have in place to support your staff if they are unable to leave the premises for several days? While it is our responsibility as individuals, families and businesses to ensure that we are adequately prepared for a difficult and unexpected situation, it is also mandatory that the provincial government and the appropriate departments be prepared as well. All of our lives could depend on it.

Citizen scientists can save Monarchs From the age of five, Fred Urquhart was fascinated by monarch butterflies in his Toronto neighbourhood. Born in 1911, he spent hours watching the orange and black insects flutter about, wondering: Where did they go in winter? At school, he read voraciously about nature, especially insects. He eventually became a zoology professor and married Norah Patterson, who shared his love of David butterflies, as did their son, Doug. To answer the question that had nagged Fred since childhood, in 1940 they found a way to attach tiny labels to individual butterflies that read, “Send to Zoology University of Toronto Canada.” They started the Insect Migration Association, now known as Monarch Watch, enlisting “citizen scientists” to tag butterflies. They finally solved the mystery in 1975 – with the help of two citizen scientists in Mexico. Ken Brugger and Catalina Aguado had come across millions of butterflies in the mountains west of Mexico City. The couple took the Urquharts there in 1976 and, miraculously, Fred found one of his tagged insects within hours. Their fascinating story is told in the documentary film Flight of the Butterflies. Now, monarchs are in trouble,
their numbers drastically reduced from the days when the Urquharts pursued their passion. And once again, experts and others are calling on citizen scientists – and politicians – to help. Monarch populations in Mexico plummeted to a record low of about 33.5 million this year from an annual average over the past 15 years of about 350 million and highs of more Suzuki than one billion. Causes include illegal logging in Mexico, herbicide use on genetically modified crops in the U.S. and climate change. In February, in response to a letter by Mexican poet Homero Aridjis, signed by more than 100 scientists, writers and environmentalists – including Canadians Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje and John Ralston Saul – U.S. President Barack Obama, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper agreed to “establish a working group to ensure the conservation of the monarch butterfly, a species that symbolizes our association.” The letter to leaders said, “As Mexico is addressing the logging issues, so now must the United States and Canada address the effects of our current agricultural policies.” Those problematic prac-

It doesn’t kill crops – just pretty much everything else, including the milkweed monarchs need to lay their eggs and that is their caterpillars’ main food. We can only hope our leaders live up to their commitment, and we can speak up to hold them to it. But we can also become citizen scientists to help researchers better understand the butterfly’s breeding, migrating and overwintering cycles and help monarchs survive. Monarch Watch (monarchwatch.org) offers classroom resources, studentscientist research projects and information about building monarch way stations, raising your own monarchs and planting milkweed and butterfly gardens. The David Suzuki Foundation website (davidsuzuki.org) offers a range of resources to help protect these pollinating insects. The world wouldn’t know where North American monarchs travel if it weren’t for the Urquharts and the continent-wide battalion of citizen scientists they inspired. Henderson Road has been struck off the list of roadways banning longboarders and complaints will now be maintained in a municipal database. Council made the decision based on a report by engineering director Dave Marshall, stating no complaints about longboarding have been received from residents, however, he did recieve a letter from bicyclist. In that letter, dated Feb. 25, Bruce Kilpatrick
explained how he was involved in a “serious accident” on Aug. 8, 2012 when a “skateboarder” kicked his board out, causing it to hit Kilpatrick’s bicycle wheel, resulting in a fall. He broke two bones in one of his hands, suffered severe road rash on his left arm and leg and sustained damage to his bike and helmet, which had to be replaced. A person rollerblading suffered minor injuries after being struck by a truck in the crosswalk at Beach Drive and Dalhousie Street. The Oak Bay woman, 24, wearing protective gear and a helmet, was struck by a Ford Ranger and taken to hospital on March 22 at 4:15 p.m. Oak Bay police said the driver, a 71-year-old Saanich man, had slowed down and was looking into the parking lot of Willows Beach, considering turning when the woman entered the crosswalk.

Driver caught running away from police
A 31-year-old man from Salt Spring Island spent a night in jail for running from police after failing a breathalyzer test. The man was stopped driving in his pickup truck on March 22 at 2:23 a.m. on Cadboro Bay Road near the intersection of Fort and Foul Bay. He was uncooperative with police and bolted after failing the sobriety test. He was caught, issued an immediate 90-day driving prohibition and a 30-day impoundment of his truck before he was taken to jail to sober up

A 90-year-old driver was taken to hospital after crashing into a car at the intersection of Foul Bay Road and Allenby Street, causing him to bump his head. NDP MLA calls MultiMaterial BC a ‘Godzillasized red tape monster’ Jeff Nagel Black Press
The NDP is accusing the provincial government of handing over control of B.C.’s blue box recycling system to Toronto-based multinational executives who will be unaccountable while B.C. businesses and households pay higher costs. Opposition small business critic Lana Popham raised the issue of Multi Material BC in the Legislature Monday, calling on the province to change course before the agency’s new system for recycling packaging and printed paper takes effect May 19. “If government doesn’t take a step back, B.C.’s recycling system is going to end up in a giant dumpster,” Popham said. “The control of recycling should never Lana Popham have been outsourced to the large corporate interests based in Ontario and abroad. This program needs to be paused and the entire concept reconsidered.” Popham’s comments follow the launch earlier this month of a campaign against MMBC by a coalition of business groups, including the newspaper industry, who say they can’t afford to pay high fees imposed under the new system. “The Liberal government loves to claim they’re getting rid of red tape,” she said in an interview Monday. “So it’s quite ironic because MMBC is a Godzilla-sized red tape monster.” Although MMBC is registered as a society, Popham called it a “dummy corporation” because two of its three directors are Toronto-based senior executives with Loblaws and Unilever, while the third is MMBC managing director Allan Langdon.
The Saanich South NDP MLA said the province should force MMBC to give B.C. stakeholders majority control. Popham said the MMBC system will be “dangerously close to monopoly” resulting in less competition and innovation in recycling. She also said municipalities have been pressured into signing contracts with inadequate compensation for their costs, the threat of penalties for contamination and a gag clause. MMBC’s new recycling fees on businesses will be passed along to consumers through higher prices, Popham said, calling it a “hidden tax” that won’t be transparent to consumers. Meanwhile, she says cities are unlikely to rebate property taxes that households already pay for recycling. “The slogan for MMBC should probably be ‘Recycle once, but pay twice.’” In some cities where MMBC won’t provide services, such as Kamloops, residents will pay for nothing, Popham added. MMBC says it will take new types of containers and packaging not collected in B.C. before. But Popham noted glass will no longer be collected curbside in many cities and there’s little evidence the system will improve recycling rates overall. She said a smarter approach would have been to extend the beverage can deposit-refund system to more containers, such as milk cartons and laundry detergent jugs. Liberal MLA Eric Foster (Vernon Monashee) responded in the Legislature, saying the province made changes to exempt most businesses from MMBC fees and paperwork if they earn less than $1 million in revenue, generate less than one tonne per year of packaging, or operate as a single outlet. “We’ve got all kinds of validation on this – chambers of commerce, local government, opportunities for local government to either continue the way they’re doing it or to have MMBC put their contractors in there to pick up,” said Foster, who serves on the government’s environment and land use committee. “MMBC came forward as an opportunity to change people’s way of doing business and to put the onus on the original producers of the waste product or the recyclable product to reduce.” editor@saanichnews.com

A wallet unearthed in a Saanich park on March 10 has made its way back to its owner, Victoria police say. The red wallet, with identification dating back more than 30 years, was discovered during an invasive species clean up in Bruce Hutchison Park. It was turned over to police, who tracked down the owner. While the identification likely made the task easy – found in the wallet were a social insurance card and an old student ID card for Oak Bay senior secondary, VicPD utilize a number of tools to return lost or stolen items to owners, including

Brush up your bike skills The Capital Regional District and the Greater Victoria Bike to Work Society are partnering to offer the Ride On! cycling program throughout the region from April to October. The workshops help novice riders make cycling a regular part of their lives, as well as help experienced riders fine-tune their skills. “We want to inspire people to have fun while cycling safely and more often in Canada’s cycling capital,” says Theresa Gulliver, bike skills program manager of the Greater Victoria Bike to Work Society. “These courses are designed to increase your confidence and comfort riding in traffic by teaching you the skills and best practices to enhance your life through fun, safe cycling.” Nearly 60 courses are available in communities throughout the region. Most courses are delivered at recre-
ation centres. You can also request personalized, specific programs, such as classes for women, immigration and cultural associations. For adults, the opportunities range from a free one-hour cycling mini workshop for workplace lunch ‘n’ learns, to more comprehensive halfday or full-day bike skills courses. Costs range from $20 to $35. For kids, the program offers training for grades 6 and 7 students and a fun-filled three-hour course that teaches kids aged 7 to 9 essential bike handling and safety skills through games and activities. This is not some by Keith Morgan wild, optimistic prediction but a solid forecast based on what our readers revealed in a comprehensive survey conducted on behalf of Black Press by Pulse Research, a company with 30 years of experience in asking the right questions of consumers. In a series of wide-ranging interviews, Black Press newspaper readers from all over the province gave Pulse a comprehensive account of their spending plans. Their intention to spend $53.1 million on fish and chips, $45.8 million on tooth whitening, $13.1 million on tattoos or piercing, $9.1 million on pet toys and $1.9 million on tuxedos, raised some smiles. Chrysler wheels out its sedan segment slugger
The 200 is not a new nameplate for Chrysler but the 2015 model is all-new from the ground up. This generation of 200 debuts the new “face of Chrysler” with its signature grille and logo. There’s also a standard set of rear LED tail lamps, and the interior craftsmanship is much more impressive than before. This mid-size sedan is hoping to play ball – and win – against competitors like the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Mazda6 and Toyota Camry, in an ever-aggressive segment. Using the baseball analogy with the 200 seemed apropos since the drive event took place in Louisville, Kentucky, the home of the Louisville slugger. Nevertheless, here are the meat and potatoes for the all-new vehicle. There are four trims available on the 200. First is the LX with a starting MSRP of $22,995. Then there’s the Limited, the S and the top-of-the-line C model. Regardless of trim, each comes with an industry first, a ninespeed automatic transmission. My day started behind the wheel of the Limited trim with the 2.4L, four-cylinder MultiAir engine (MSRP $24,995). This powerplant produces 184 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque.

The interior reflects that of thoughtful craftsmanship and design. Soft touch materials are used throughout and the layout is easy on the eyes. Not to mention the abundance of cubbyholes in which to place personal items. On a side note, the interior colour combinations drew inspiration from various American cities. For example, the all-black interior pays homage to New York City, the Linen and Black is Sausalito, California and the Blue and Black on the S model is Detroit.
The centre stack can be adorned with either a five-inch touch screen or the optional 8.4-inch. To me, the five-inch screen seemed a little small, so I’d invest in the larger version. That said, it was still highly functional and easy to use. On the road, the 2.4L Limited shines brightest when on the highway and on long stretches of pavement. It has ability in the
twists and turns, but to really get a dynamic feel, you’d need to opt for the S or C trim to put it in the sport mode. In that case, you get a different suspension setup and steering feel to really allow you to have more fun in the captain’s chair. Back to the 2.4L though. In the city, I felt I didn’t need much more power. Steering feel is light and allows to car the
move with ease at slow speeds and gingerly into parking spots. Overall, a pleasant drive. The second half of my day was consumed with the V6. Yum. The award winning 3.6L, Pentastar V6 packs 295 hp underneath its sparkling new hood. For a driver’s car, this is the one I’d pick. What’s more, you can configure this engine on all trims except
the base LX. Additionally, you can opt for an all-wheel drive setup too. However, the AWD system needs to be paired with the V6. Getting into the sport mode, or fun mode as I call it, requires pushing down and turning the central dial/gear selector to the right. Make sure you push it down, otherwise it won’t go anywhere. And less fun will be had. When accelerating, there’s a little bit of a throaty gurgle that comes standard out of the twin exhaust pipes around back. It’s a nice sound and one that I enjoyed hearing over and over again. One thing I did notice is that the A pillar did have width to it, so visibility is a little trickier out the front. And with its sloping roofline, visibility out the rear could have been better. Thank goodness for the rear view camera. Along with its new bodywork and insides, there are over 60 standard and available safety features to keep both you and the 200 looking good and in one piece. I can remember buying my first truck in 1986 like it was yesterday. It had to be a specific make and model. I was looking for a Toyota 4x4 pick-up, black in colour and it had to be in good shape. I wanted it to be bone stock with as little mileage as possible. I found one in the newspaper; it was on the lot at a dealership in Surrey. Quickly I called them to inquire and they said they had a couple of people with deals written up, but it didn’t look like they were going to go through, so if I wanted it I had better get down there

office that nobody had seen before. At that time the largest they made were 42-inch. I told him to send them to me, I would figure out what I had to do to fit them under the truck. When they came in they looked big. So big I got worried. The custom leaf springs came back from the spring shop and I knew my calculations were correct. With all the multiple shocks in place, chassis freshly painted, motor work done and lower gears installed it was ready for the tires. I cleared away the debris pile accumulated around my truck, placed the floor jack under the rear axle and started to jack it up. With the rear tires on and clearing the fenders it was time to move to the front. When I started to lift the front I noticed how high the hood was getting, at that point I knew I had built a monster. With all the tires in place I slowly drove it out of the shop. The sun gleaming down on the freshly-polished paint and the smell of paint burning off the exhaust system still sticks in my mind. Outside it looked like a beast; people slowed down to take a look. The show was a week later and I came home with first place. Mission accomplished. On the ride home, I thought how quickly I had to grow up and look at everything as if someone was going to take advantage of me, a sad reality. The next day I picked up the latest copy of Truck Trader and spotted the exact make and model I was looking for. I bought the 1983 edition for $9,000 from a family that only used it once a week to drive from Coquitlam to Abbotsford and back for supplies. It was perfect; funny how God puts things in your path and everything works out in the end. A week later I started to work on it. I acquired some used 33-inch tires and installed a four-inch lift kit. I drove that truck every night after work to show it off. I washed it so many times I thought the paint was going to come off. A year passed and I purchased many more add-ons for the truck. A major car show was coming up soon and I decided I would put it in the back of the shop and work on it so I could enter the show. Giving up my truck for a month was tough and I had to make a few sacrifices to get around. My first car show was a hit. I came in second place and I was determined the following year I would be back with something they had never seen before. I poured most of my paycheques into that truck and took it off the road for two months for its transformation. I called up the owner of Interco Tire and asked about some Super Swamper tires. He said he had a set of 44x18.5x15 tires in his

Confessions of a Curber It’s only been a month, but I can see myself selling cars for a long, long time. I feel like a new man. One evening, I was in line at the superstore. An elderly gentleman saw my shopping cart. I had a new digital tire gauge that I was going to give to my next buyer. Turns out he was looking for a used car as he’d recently given his car to his grandson. He just needed something basic. “This is your lucky day!” I told him. I could tell that he’d been a car enthusiast in his younger days. “Where’d you get this car, son?” he asked me. “It’s my dad’s old car – he passed away and I

And worse, he needs to get it inspected, registered and insured within 30 days - I didn’t bother. I just got my buddy in Bellingham to help me get it across. That evening, I took out the papers I’d received with the car. I decided to go over them more thoroughly. I guess I was a bit bored. Turns out, the vehicle had been registered in four U.S. states. Somewhere along the line, the rebuild* status was dropped. Probably intentionally. The inspection and ICBC will catch that. And who knows if the odometer is right? At least it’s no longer mine. *Rebuild – A vehicle written off as a total loss by an insurance company, then rebuilt and certified for use. This term does not describe a vehicle that has a new or repaired motor, transmission or other major part. Rebuilds offer savings when repaired well, but a buyer has a right to know it was rebuilt. But this buyer didn’t and Walt walked away with the cash.

Being able to change the sensitivity of the steering, throttle response, transmission changes and even the sound of the engine, makes this SQ5 a pleasure in stop and go driving or full throttle passing on the highway. I found the comfort setting to be best in the city and the dynamic setting for open road cruising. The ride is firm and very responsive without being too choppy and combined with the potent engine can be placed into corners and is sucked to the pavement thanks to a sophisticated Quattro AWD system. Verdict The Q5 is a solid choice for anyone looking for a premium compact SUV. The base four-cylinder model starts at $40,900 and is the best seller. This SQ5 is the powerhouse version and does everything so well, point it where you want to go and it will get the driver there with a smile on their face. Ambrose is living by the motto: “Feel the fear and do it anyway.” “I’m always happy when I’ve said yes because of the feeling afterwards, the adrenaline,” she says. “It always feels amazing, even though it can be traumatizing at the time.” The event springs from McMurray-Ives’ personal experience speaking with a realtor friend accomplished in interior design, who had never viewed herself as a creative individual. When the realtor viewed her work through that lens, she discovered an untapped connection to the arts, a sentiment at the core of the society’s mandate. “Creativity runs through every person, but lot of people don’t feel creative or acknowledge their creativity or feel like they could perform,” McMurray-Ives says. It’s not about perfectionism, McMurray-Ives says: it’s about creativity. “I’m feeling a little bit nervous, but more for the excitement aspect of it,” SonikHenderson says. Since we checked in with Sonik-Henderson and Ambrose
at The Makehouse, the matches were revealed. Sonik-Henderson is now working with Syd Woodward, videographer; Ambrose will share the stage with Patrick Boyle, musician; spoken word poet Missie Peters teams up with chef Justin Grenda; puppeteer Tim Gosley creates with chemist Tom Fyles; author Madeline Sonik and carpenter Dan Wise collaborate; and sound artist David Parfit and hair stylist Jen Li pool their creativity for The Alchemy of Chance. “All of the artists shine in their genre and almost all of them are known to do things quite differently than anyone else within the community,” McMurray-Ives says. University of Victoria professor Bonnie Leadbeater was named a recipient of a B.C. Community Achievement Award last week. The Saanich resident and psychology prof has worked with a team of educators and police officers for more than 15 years on developing and implementing the WITS antibullying program in B.C. and Canada. “This is a team award – it’s a huge team of people that work on WITS,” Leadbeater said. WITS (Walk Away, Ignore, Talk It out and Seek Help) is used in schools to “talk to kids in a non-threatening way and talk about how to problem solve, instead of who’s going to be punished or who’s tattling,” she explained. WITS began in the 1990s, first initiated by the principal of the former Lampson elementary school in Esquimalt and then taken up by a police school liaison officer. Leadbeater and a UVic-based research team joined in 1998 when WITS was formalized as a program.

into the area. Part of that movement is a result of the expansion of industry in Sidney. Between Ramsay Machinen Works, Viking Air, Sobey’s, Scott Plastics and Epicure, between 3,000 and 4,000 people are employed in the immediate area. “There’s a movement toward providing ‘worksource’ housing, as opposed to ‘affordable housing,’ so that people who are working in these areas aren’t having to drive a hour to an hourand-a-half to work every day,” Mann says. And for those families and couples where only one partner works on the Peninsula, transit service to downtown is exceptional, she says.

Saanich Peninsula, with its rural properties, small townstyle merchants and glorious retirement amenities, could never be mistaken for its municipal cousins, where big box stores and sprawling residential developments are more common. Longtime Peninsula residents say such an environment is part of what maintains the charm of the area. Whether from the absence of major change, either from a residential housing standpoint or commercial services or some combination of factors, the so-called “normalizing” of typical home prices in the Capital Region appears to have hit the Peninsula hardest, with typical house prices dropping by several per cent in the past couple of years. What that means is quality properties in the area have become affordable to a wider range of buyers, says Realtor Shelley Mann. A director and former president of the Victoria Real Estate Board, she was born and raised on the Peninsula and still lives in Sidney. “There is some great value coming on the market right now and they’re also selling fairly quickly,” she says. “I think the public has been sitting back and waiting for this to happen in our market.” Realtor Patrick Schorle,

The abundance of outdoor activities available help keep longtime residents on the Peninsula, but can also attract new ones. who lives in Deep Cove and focuses his business mainly on the Peninsula, said two major developments; Jesken Town Centre, on 62 acres of Tsawout First Nation land in Central Saanich, and a commercial project proposed for a portion of the former Sandown Raceway lands in North Saanich, stand to change the local landscape. Schorle admits he is among those “biased residents” who have a great fondness for the area as it is. “It offers a lifestyle that’s getting more and more dif-
ficult to find in other parts of the world,” he says, using the buzzword that has prompted many out-oftowners to buy spring/summer homes in the area. “There’s so many parks, so many beaches where there’s not a crowd. It’s got so much to offer, yet you can drive to Victoria so quickly if you want that downtown lifestyle.” But don’t get fooled into thinking the Saanich Peninsula is somehow caught in a 1990s vortex with little new development beefing
up the residential market. There are various projects coming on stream designed to appeal to first-time home buyers and people looking for a taste of rural life. Mann points to a townhouse development on Bowerbank Road in Sidney with homes starting at under $300,000, and the Canora Mews project near Victoria International Airport, featuring single family homes priced well under the region’s benchmark price of $483,400, as examples of efforts to bring new families
