On the road again: preparing for spring and summer road trips The return of warm weather marks the return of road trips for millions of motorists across the country. Whether going to the beach or heading off to parts unknown, hitting the open road with the windows down is a time-honoured tradition for drivers of all ages. But such road trips can prove disastrous if drivers don’t take the right steps to prepare their vehicles for spring and summer travel. The following are a few ways motorists can ensure their car is ready to tackle the open road.
Tighten things up
Loose parts, such as exhaust clamps, license plates, and interior trim panels, can create rattles and cause parts to get damaged or fall off. What’s more, rattling sounds can be a noisy nuisance for drivers and passengers alike. Thread lockers can be used to keep the nuts and bolts from coming loose and save parts replacement costs. They also have a threadlocker for plastic fasteners, which vehicle manufacturers have grown to rely on more and more.
Wash your car
A newly washed car not only looks good, but it’s often much safer as well. Take your car to a car wash a few days before the trip and have the vehicle thoroughly cleaned. A thorough cleaning will remove dirt and grime from the vehicle’s undercarriage, not to mention unsightly bird droppings and water spots or salt stains leftover from winter.
Fix foggy headlight lenses
Many spring and summer road trippers travel at night so their days can be spent soaking up some sun at the beach or lake. Before heading off for parts unknown, motorists should inspect their headlight lenses to reduce risk of accident. If the lenses are yellowed and foggy, that’s likely because salt, ozone and road debris has dulled them to a point where vision can be impaired, placing drivers and their passengers at risk.
OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK
But foggy lenses don’t mandate an expensive headlight replacement. In fact, do-it-yourself kits makes it easy to clean up and polish dull headlight lenses and restore them to like new condition, improving your car’s lighting and driver visibility.
Address windshield nicks and bull’s-eyes
Nicks and chips in the windshields are a common problem regardless of the season. But such damage is most prevalent in the winter because of the extra debris that’s on the road. These nicks and cracks need to get fixed as soon as possible to prevent them from spreading and resulting in the need for a windshield replacement. Oftentimes, motorists can address nicks and bull’s-eyes in their own driveways in a matter of minutes. For example, there are tailor made kits for do-it-yourselfers, requiring no heating or mixing while ensuring each repair is virtually undetectable.
Check the battery
Over time, battery terminals and cables will start to corrode. Such corrosion will eventually eat away at the battery’s parts, creating a bad connection that sooner or later will require the battery be replaced. Check the battery before your trip and remember to clean the battery periodically as part of routine vehicle maintenance.

Tips for a safe summer of RV fun For the eighth straight year we are honoured to have had our customers vote us Best Place to Buy and Service an RV in the South Okanagan. It is our desire that you will continue to trust Leisureland RV Centre with all of your RVing needs. Leisureland RV can help you with the purchase of new or used RVs, and with parts and service to keep your unit in top shape. To ensure happy camping this year, here is a list of things to check or consider. 1) Remember to have your propane system inspected for proper pressure and potential leaks, by a licensed technician. Age as well as the expansion and contraction of winter temperature changes can cause leaks to appear. Your propane regulator should also be tested for proper pressure and operation. Your appliances should be checked for dirt, rust and spider nests prior to operation. 2) Summerize your water system before heading out for the first time. Flush out the residual antifreeze and check it all over for leaks. Leisureland R.V. Centre has a summerize program that takes care of these chores for you. 3) How old are your batteries? If they are more than five years old, it may be time to consider replacing them. Regardless of age, be certain to check the water level and top them up at the beginning of the season. Do check them periodically throughout the year as well. 4) If you do a lot of boon docking you might want to consider the extra capacity of a two six-volt battery system, as well as the use of low power consumption LED lights. You can have up to 10 LED lights on for the same consumption of one older style incandescent light, and they do not burn your lenses. 5) Solar panels are a silent way of keeping your batteries charged. The cost of solar panels has dropped significantly
in the last few years. They now make a cost-effective, green’ alternative to the annoying drone of a generator. 6) Brake inspection is also important before hitting the road for the season. While some of the newer units have self adjusting braking systems, some newer and most older units do not. During a wheel-bearing repack service at Leisureland RV Centre, we check all of your brake components, adjustment, and operation. We check tire condition and set your tire pressures. 7) It is very important to have your roof, all moldings and windows inspected for proper seal. Water entry into your RV. leads to expensive structural repairs. 8) Remember to check all of your interior and exterior lights. Corrosion over the winter may have caused them to quit working. 9) Save fuel by carrying only the amount water you need for immediate use or fill up at a convenient location just before you arrive at your destination. Remember to drain your tanks prior to leaving as well. Periodically drain your hot water heater to keep it from getting stagnant, as well as to remove hard water deposits that collect inside the hot water tank during normal use. 10) This is a good time to go through all of your compartments, cupboards, and closets. Clear out all broken or unused items, such as extra cookware, tools, toys and clothes. The added weight of excess items is costing you money in the form of additional fuel to cart them along with you 11) Stop on occasion during your trip and do a walk around your unit to ensure that everything is as it should be. 12) Most importantly, take time to stop and smell the roses, enjoy your RVing experience in the wonderful province that we live in. There is so much to see and do right here in our own back yard.

Did you know? In the future
In the future, cars may not be built and assembled at automotive warehouses and factories full of automated robots. They may be the product of more efficient manufacturing thanks to 3D printing, which can produce relatively inexpensive, light and efficient automobiles. One pioneer, Jim Kor, founder of the Urbee 2, a 3D-printed vehicle, made a three-wheel, two-passenger vehicle with plastic through Fused Deposition Modeling, or FDM. This involves spraying molten polymer layer by layer to build the car chassis. The entire car, which is roughly 10 feet long, took about 2,500 hours to build. What would normally be several pieces of metal and other components in a traditional car is now made from fewer and larger pieces that result in a lighter vehicle. And a car with less weight can use fuel more efficiently. Vehicles that are made through 3D printing may be the wave of the future, potentially revolutionizing automobile construction.
Drive-in movies then and now The drive-in movie theater was the brainchild of Richard Hollingshead, Jr., an auto products sales manager at his father’s Whiz Auto Products store. Hollingshead wanted to combine his passion for automobiles with his love of films. After testing different parking configurations and imitating weather conditions in his own driveway to simulate the drive-in movie experience, Hollingshead filed for a patent for the drive-In theater. He received the patent on May 16, 1933. The first drive-in was opened on June 6, 1933, in Camden, N.J. The price of admission was $.25 for the car and each person inside. Drive-in theaters peaked in popularity in the 1950s, when there were roughly 5,000 drive-ins operating across the United States and Canada. According to Drive-Ins. com, currently there are about 365 drive-ins remaining in the United States and 55 in Canada.

Pulling over safely
AND TOUCHLESS CAR WASH
It can be difficult to pull over smoothly and safely on a busy highway, especially in a stressful situation, such as a mechanical emergency. First, slow down and put on your right-turn signal to indicate you will need to move into the right lane. Try to select a spot where you are not on a bend or where there is poor visibility or your vehicle cannot be seen by other drivers on the highway. You do not want to be injured while exiting or attempting to work on the pulled-over vehicle. Keep an emergency roadside assistance preparedness kit containing flares, emergency triangles or cones, a flashlight, batteries, a poncho, booster cables, duct tape, a utility knife, cord, a blanket, and first aid supplies in the car as a precaution. The Canadian Automobile Association recommends staying inside the vehicle, especially on a busy road. Those who have a roadside assistance plan membership can use a cell phone to make a call for help. It is best to wait in the car until a tow truck or police arrive.

Tire maintenance key to safe driving Tires are the link between a vehicle and the roadway, and tire quality has a direct impact on the performance and safety of an automobile. But tire maintenance is easy to overlook. However, ignoring tire maintenance can threaten driver and passenger safety and make a vehicle operate inefficiently. Steering, breaking ability and traction are all governed by good tires. Worn tread can result in longer stopping times and make it difficult to brake immediately in an emergency situation. Although driving tends to be the primary culprit behind worn down tires, sometimes bald or unevenly worn out tread is indicative of a larger problem, such as a misaligned wheelbase, improperly aligned tires or tires that are under-inflated. The following are some common problems associated with tires and how to address these issues should they arise.
Alignment According to the Rubber Manufacturers Association, improper alignment causes rapid or uneven tread wear. Tires should be aligned and balanced periodically to avoid irregular wear and having to replace tires prematurely.
Tread pattern Tires feature different tread patterns depending on the brand of tire. They may be direc-
tional, asymmetrical, non-directional, and directional/asymmetrical. When purchasing replacement tires, it is advisable to match the tread pattern to the existing tires. This helps enhance the performance of the car. In fact, some newer cars require tread to match.
Tire pressure
Under-inflation of tires can cause failure, stress and irregular wear. Under-inflated tires
also may contribute to loss of control that leads to accidents. Always maintain the manufacturer’s recommendations for the correct pressure, which should be adjusted based on the temperature. Tires should undergo the same inspection and maintenance as other parts of the vehicle. Tires are a vital component to safe driving, and routine maintenance can prevent accidents and other problems.
Blowouts
Bald tires can blowout as a result of friction on roadways that is met with minimal rubber. Getting caught on the side of the road with a tire blowout can be a hassle, so routinely check tire treads and replace tires accordingly.
Tread depth
Average new car tires usually start with 10/32 inch to 11/32 inch of original tread depth. When tread reaches a depth of 2/32 inch, they are considered worn out. There are different ways to gauge tread depth. Insert a penny into the tread groove with the “heads” side upside down and facing you. If you can see all of the head, it is time to replace the tires. Don’t have any currency on hand? Then look at the tread wear indicator bar molded into the tires. When these bars become flush with the adjacent ribs of the tire, the tires should be replaced.

Prevent and treat headlight cloudiness Headlights serve to improve visibility during nighttime driving conditions and inclement weather. They help drivers see and be seen by other motorists. When headlights are dull and cloudy, they can prove to be a safety hazard on the road. Fortunately, there are ways to restore headlights to their full effectiveness. Driving during the day is easier than driving at night, when vision is easily compromised. A human’s visual field is much smaller in the dark, and it can be harder to spot road hazards, animals or people when driving at night. An improperly lit driving area can make it much more difficult to see. It also impairs others’ ability to see your
vehicle coming and going. The National Institute for Traffic and Highway Safety says the No. 1 reason for severe nighttime accidents and reduced driving safety is dim or cloudy and improperly lit headlights. Also, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has found that nearly four out of five drivers drive with improperly lit headlights. There are a few different reasons for poor headlight illumination. In many instances, the headlight lamp has burned out and the light is no longer working. Old bulbs may dim and fail to provide the same level of illumination as they once did.

Oxidized and cloudy headlight coverings are also a known contributor to diminished headlight function. Today’s headlight lenses are made from plastic. While it may not be visible immediately, road debris and weather conditions can put small dings and scratches into the lenses over time. These small damages can add up to covers that look dingy and dull. Cloudiness also occurs as the result of exposure to ultraviolet light. Although newer cars have lenses that are supposed to resist scratching and damage, some dulling may occur. There are many headlight cleaning kits on the market that are quite effective at restoring the lenses to their original glory. Most of these kits use a series of buffers and polishers to gently buff out scratches and rid the headlights of oxidation. Because headlight lens replacement
e d i r r u o y p u p Pum

may cost upwards of $200 per lens, the kits are much more cost effective. A car owner can also perform similar maintenance with just a few items from the hardware store and automotive shop. Employ incremental grits of sandpaper to clean the headlights without causing further damage. In addition, cutting compounds and surface cleaners can be applied with electric buffers to clean the sandpaper grit and any other debris caught in the headlights. Plastic polishers can further increase the shine of the headlights and make them look new. The key to keeping headlights looking their best is to be on top of any damage taking place. Handling minor cloudiness is much easier than a complete headlight overhaul. Routinely inspect the headlights and check for damage.

Fuel Efficiency:
Common misconceptions Fuel efficiency is an important issue for car buyers, and understandably so. Conserving fuel is good for drivers’ budgets and the planet, so the concept of fuel efficiency would seem to benefit everyone. But just because fuel efficiency is a good concept does not mean there are not misconceptions about it among drivers and automotive professionals alike. The following are some of the more widely held misconceptions about fuel efficiency. * Full tanks conserve fuel. Many people have long believed that a nearly full tank of gas means the fuel within that tank is less likely to evaporate, and that tanks that half-full tanks are losing gas to evaporation. Though this might have been the case years ago, today’s vehicle’s are smarter than ever before, and their fuel systems are designed with vapor recovery systems so drivers traveling around with tanks that are closer to empty than full aren’t losing gas to evaporation. * Manual transmissions are more fuel efficient. Technology can once again be credited with turning conventional wisdom on its head. In the past, manual transmission vehicles might have been more fuel efficient because drivers could more efficiently control engine revving with a five-speed manual transmission than they could with the standard three-speed automatic transmission. However, automatic transmissions have evolved over the years, and they are now more adept at controlling revs and conserving fuel than many drivers of manual transmission vehicles. * When you fill up matters. Some drivers have long believed that filling up during the cooler hours of the day earns them more gas than filling up when the temperatures are at their peak. This theory traces its origins to the fact that liquids are at their most dense when they are cool. But today’s filling stations store their gas in tanks beneath the ground, which is why you might see a tanker emptying its contents into the ground at the filling station. These underground tanks are insulated from temperature swings, so you aren’t likely to receive any more gas by filling up in the morning than you will when filling up at night. * An old vehicle is destined to be less

Wheel Alignment fuel efficient. Any product that is allowed to fall into disrepair will prove less efficient than products that are well maintained, and cars are no exception. A poorly maintained car will not operate at peak fuel efficiency because it’s likely being forced to work harder to get down the street than it would if it was well kept. But a well-maintained vehicle should not grow less fuel efficient over time. * Shifting into neutral while stopping saves gas. This is another misconception that was once true but no longer applies thanks to advances in technology. When engines still had carburetors, shifting into neutral might have helped conserve fuel by stopping the flow of gas into the engine while the car was idling. However, fuel injection systems are now computerized and capable of sensing when an engine is revving above idle. This shuts off the fuel injectors, preventing gas from being injected into the engine and preventing gas from being wasted while the vehicle is stopped as a result. Taking steps to conserve fuel is a good way for drivers to save money and benefit the environment. However, some of the conventional means to conserving fuel are no longer viable.

Simple ways to extend the life of your car According to data from TrueCar.com, in 2012 the average new car cost $30,500. That’s a considerable expense, especially at a time when fuel costs remain high and cost of living continues to rise. Because new cars have become so expensive, more and more vehicle owners are looking for ways to extend the life of their vehicles. The longer a car can stay on the road, the better an investment that vehicle becomes. Fortunately, there are several steps vehicle owners can take that should ensure their vehicles stay on the road for years to come. * Scale back on short trips. The toll cold starts take on a vehicle can add up over time. When a car is started, condensation builds up in the vehicle’s exhaust system. On longer trips, that condensation will gradually evaporate. However, on short trips, that condensa-
COME IN &
tion often does not have enough time to evaporate, and over time too many short trips will lead to an accumulation of water in the muffler that can lead to rust and rust holes on the muffler. Short trips also can negatively affect gas mileage. When possible, leave your car at home on trips into town when you can just as easily walk or ride a bicycle. Over time, reducing the amount of short trips you take in your car will greatly reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and improve fuel efficiency. * Stick to the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. Adhering to your vehicle’s maintenance schedule serves many purposes, including improving the its durability and protecting various components, including its cooling system and drivetrain. While many manufacturers used to recommend changing a vehicle’s oil every 3,000

miles, many of today’s newer automobiles need their oil changed less frequently. Check your owner’s manual for manufacturer recommendations regarding oil changes, and don’t forget to replace the oil filter when changing your vehicle’s oil. * Pay attention to brake pads. Brake pads that are allowed to wear down can cause damage to the brakes’ rotors and calipers. That damage can prove costly and make things harder on your vehicle. Keep an eye on your vehicle’s brake pads, which are far less expensive to replace than rotors and calipers, and do not allow them to wear down to metal. * Keep your tires properly inflated. Tires that are under-inflated will negatively impact your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. In addition, the tires’ life expectancy is reduced considerably when tires are not properly inflated. Routinely check your tire pressure, especially if you drive a lot, and keep tires inflated at the pressure recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. * Be mindful when filling up your tank.
Many people do not pay much attention to their surroundings when pulling into the filling station. But when you fill up can impact your car’s life expectancy. Perhaps the worst time to fill your tank is when the fuel tanker is in the gas station refilling the underground tanks. That’s because the process of filling the underground tanks can stir up sediment that had settled at the bottom of those tanks. If that sediment finds its way into your vehicle’s gas tank, it can clog filters and fuel injectors and negatively affect the vehicle’s performance. * Take care of your vehicle’s interior, too. Caring for a car is not just about being good to what’s under the hood. The longer you enjoy driving your vehicle, the longer you are likely to keep it. Preserve the vehicle’s door and window seals; clean the dashboard, including the gauges, vacuum the floor mats; and wipe down the vehicle’s interior, whether it’s cloth or leather. Keeping up the appearance of the car’s interior will make the vehicle more enjoyable to drive and increase its value at resale.

Today’s drivers rely heavily on GPS technology, or global positioning system devices. GPS has revolutionized the way people drive and use maps and directions. While there are no hard statistics on the number of people who own GPS devices, thousands of people have either a GPS device that comes pre-equipped in a car that they purchased or a stand-alone device that was bought after the fact. These devices come preloaded with maps that work with satellites in space. The GPS receiver figures out the distance to each and uses this information to deduce the location of the
device in a process called trilateration. GPS devices have made paper maps obsolete for many people. While GPS devices can be very convenient, especially on road trips, there are some tips to keep in mind.
Placement
Place the GPS device where it won’t obstruct your vision or take your eyes off of the road for a good deal of time.
Trust
Don’t treat the GPS as if it is infallible. Even with map updates and other accessories, a
GPS can still make mistakes. Use common sense, especially where it would seem the GPS is guiding you in the wrong way.
Control Adjustment
Do not play with the controls while operating the car. If you need to adjust something on the GPS, do so only after pulling over to a safe area.

Tips for safe towing Warm weather is on the horizon, and people from all over are preparing their vehicles for another season of road trips. In addition to packing the interior cargo areas full of equipment and luggage, many roadtrippers also haul gear and recreational accessories with them. There’s more to towing than hitching a trailer and hitting the open road. A number of factors come into play when towing cargo or another vehicle, including the towing capacity of the vehicle doing the hauling. The following are some safety tips for road trippers hitting the road with trailer in tow.
Tow vehicles
While many vehicles have towing capabilities, not all of those vehicles are necessarily right for the job. Review the towing capacities of various vehicles depending on the type of trailer that will be towed. A larger, more powerful vehicle may be necessary if you will be towing something large and heavy, such as a boat or a recreational vehicle. You may need more horsepower to maintain a safe driving speed when towing especially heavy cargo.

Different manufacturers offer towing packages equipped to work in concert with your vehicle. Towing packages may include certain types of hitches, batteries, flasher systems, extended-view side mirrors, and even special axles and tires. In many areas, a trailer with a loaded weight of more than 1,500 pounds requires
a separate braking system and a breakaway switch located on the tongue of the trailer that activates the trailer brakes in the event it separates from the tow vehicle. Having the right equipment can mean the difference between safely towing cargo and getting in an accident.
Ability
Having a lot of power and the right equipment is not enough to safely tow cargo. Recklessness on the road, which includes driving over the speed limit, is a recipe for an accident. It typically takes time and some practice for drivers to grow accustomed to driving while towing cargo. Driving while towing cargo requires that drivers maneuver their vehicles differently than they would in more typical conditions, and that they drive at slower speeds while leaving room for a larger turning radius. In addition, drivers must accommodate for the extra weight when braking.
Vehicle check
Verifying that the trailer hitch is secure is not the only inspection drivers must conduct before hitting the open road. The vehicle doing the towing should be serviced, and any repairs should be made. Check fluid levels, particularly the transmission fluid. In addition, make sure the water level in the battery is acceptable and have the motor oil changed if it is nearing its mileage limit. It’s also a good idea to replace the air filter, examine the tires for adequate tread and test the brakes. When the trip begins, give your vehicle and the hitch a once-over to double-check that everything is in working order. This can be done during service station stops along the trip. Spring is a season of recreational fun and long road trips, but it pays to play it safe when towing gear and other cargo.

Tips for driving in rainy conditions Rainy weather can arrive any time of year. While an afternoon spent indoors watching the drops fall can be relaxing, driving in the rain is anything but. It requires extra concentration and improved reaction time. Rain is blamed for many accidents, but many of these situations are largely preventable among drivers who adapt to the weather and roadway conditions. Here are some things to consider. * Reduced visibility occurs from wiper blades, glare (particularly at night) and heavy downpours. When you are unable to see the road ahead, including other vehicles, reduce your speed. If the rain is coming down in torrents, pull over to the side of the road and wait for a respite. Turn on your lights to ensure you are visible to other cars on the road. * Recognize that rain can cause slick conditions. A film of water develops on the roadways, and that can affect the performance of your vehicle’s tires. Less traction means the car can slip and slide. Hydroplaning, or coasting on the surface of the water, is common. Another, lesser-known condition is slickness caused by grease and oil in the asphalt. During a long dry spell, these substances build up on the roads. When it rains, the oil and water doesn’t mix, bringing the oils to the surface and exacerbating slick conditions. The first few
hours of a rainstorm can be quite dangerous until heavier rains wash the oils away. * Water spraying up onto tires and brakes can compromise braking ability. That means it could take longer to stop under wet conditions. Do not tailgate and leave extra room between vehicles. If you drive through a puddle of water, pump the brakes and test them out to be sure you can stop. Brake earlier so that other drivers understand your intentions and can react accordingly. * Avoid extremely large puddles. First of all, you cannot judge the depth of the puddle and you may end up getting stuck, especially in the event of roadway flooding. Water splashing into the engine compartment may damage electrical components. Steer around puddles to be on the safe side. * Use extra care watching out for pedestrians. A normally observant person may be distracted by the rain, puddles and wrangling an umbrella and veer into the path of cars. Be mindful of the side of the roads and where pedestrians may be, such as around parked cars. * Change wiper blades twice per year. You do not want to be caught with shoddy wiper blades in poor conditions. Without an effective wiper blade, rain cannot be cleared effectively from the windshield.

Many people associate car troubles with cold weather. However, cars are susceptible to breakdowns when it is hot outside. Extreme heat adds to an already high temperature under the hood, requiring ventilation and cooling systems to work that much harder. Batteries, alternators, starters, fan motors, and cooling systems are particularly vulnerable to high heat. It’s easy for a car to overheat and breakdown. Proper maintenance and some hot weather guidelines can keep drivers safe and on the road when temperatures soar, whether drivers are going on a quick ride or an extended road trip. * Be sure the radiator is working properly and is filled with fluid at all times. This helps prevent overheating, which can strand a vehicle on the side of the road. * Hot temperatures cause items to expand, such as the air molecules inside of the tires. Make sure the tires are properly inflated so blowouts do not occur. * Keep up-to-date with oil changes and other routine maintenance. Vehicles that are well maintained are less likely to be susceptible to heat strain. * Proper air flow is essential to cool an engine and keep a vehicle air conditioning system operating efficiently. If the cooling system has not recently been serviced, have it done before the hot weather arrives.
* Replace an old battery, and top off a functioning battery with distilled water when necessary, particularly if evaporation has occurred. * Clean the vehicle so that it will better reflect the sun’s rays, cutting down on radiant heat. * When the vehicle is parked, use a car cover or a reflective shade in the windshield to protect the interior from sun damage and excessive heat. * Tinted windows can help block out more of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Make sure that tint is legal and applied properly if it is done after-market. * Plan road trips for early in the morning or late at night to cut down on the amount of time spent driving during the peak heat and sunshine. * Passengers should wear appropriate clothing and apply sunscreen. Car windows do not block UV light, and passengers may be susceptible to sunburn even when they’re in the car. * Park in the shade whenever possible. * Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even for short moments. * If the temperature gauge inside of the car reads hot, pull over, open the hood and turn the heat on inside the car to expel some of the pent-up heat. * Keep plenty of water on hand in the event of a breakdown to prevent dehydration until help arrives.

Child car safety beyond car seats Car accidents are the leading cause of injury for children. Ensuring kids are safe in the car goes beyond securing them in the right child safety seat. It means taking added precautions to avoid injuries. According to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis, nearly 250,000 children are injured every year in car accidents in the United States. Up north, the Canadian Transportation Safety Board reports that roughly 160,000 road accidents occur in Canada each year. This translates to 2,800 to 2,900 people killed on the road every year. Car accidents are also the leading cause of acquired disability, such as brain injury and paralysis, for children nationwide. Most people are aware that they should use the requisite child safety seat for their kids but do not heed other safety warnings. Here are some ways to keep children safe when riding in vehicles. * Recognize that having a car seat is not enough. Even parents who have child safety seats for their kids may not be using them correctly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, at least 72 per cent of the 3,500 observed child vehicle safety restraints being used indicated improper use. When poor use happens, the risk that the child will suffer an injury rises. One of the reasons children are harmed in vehicular accidents is because the child is moved to a larger restraint system or an adult seat prematurely. * Do not leave a child unattended. Injuries can occur to children when they are left to their own devices in or around a vehicle. Although there are certain safety precautions built into a car, they are not always foolproof. A child may shift a parked car into gear and roll into the street from a driveway. Other injuries may include getting hurt from powered accessories in the car, such as moving seats or liftgates. A kid also may become trapped in a car
or trunk, succumbing to heat stroke or lack of oxygen. * Make sure kids stay buckled in. As a child graduates from five-point harnesses to regular safety belts, they are likely to be able to unlatch the belt to exit the car. Some children are prone to taking off a seat belt while the car is in motion. NHTSA estimates note that the risk of injury by properly wearing safety belts and using safety seats correctly is reduced by 50 to 75 per cent. Children moving around a vehicle are not only putting themselves at risk but the driver as well. A driver may become distracted by movement in the car. Furthermore, in the event an accident occurs, a child who is not wearing a seatbelt becomes a flying projectile who might injure others in the car. * Keep all limbs inside the vehicle. It may seem like a game for a child to lean his or her head or arms out of the window while the vehicle is in motion, but such behaviour is inherently risky. On narrow roadways or where the car comes close to roadside signs or passing cars, parts of the body outside of the vehicle can be hit and broken or even torn off. Always make sure kids keep their arms, legs and heads inside of the vehicle at all times. * Be mindful of kids being injured when around a car. It’s not only when a child is in the car that an injury may occur. Children who sprint into the street after a rolling ball or dash through parking lots may be hit by motorists who are not paying attention or do not react quickly enough. Drivers of SUVs and minivans often find it difficult to see a short child behind a car when backing up. An investment in a back-up camera or obstruction sensor can help reduce the risk of accident or injury. Car trips can be done for business or leisure, and many times children come along for the ride. Ensuring their safety in and out of the car requires knowledge of many of the hazards that vehicles present.
