McLean Mill National Historic Site has been a busy place this winter as volunteers overhaul several projects around the heritage site. As with many things that are old and made out of wood, the decking to the steam sawmill needs to be replaced, and large 6x6-inch posts supporting the verandah at the visitors’ centre were rotting and needed to be replaced. The last time the deck was restored was in the 1990s, mill manager Neil Malbon said. And the visitors’ centre was built adjacent to the protected heritage site in time for opening day in 2000.

when the steam donkey was restored for Steam Expo in Vancouver in 1986, although they are inspected every year. “They will be good for another 30-40 years now,” he said. Steam donkeys were the “work horses” in the B.C. woods until after the Second World War and there were thousands of them working in the logging camps from Alaska to Northern California, IHS volunteer David Hooper said. “Now, there is only one left and the boilermakers want to ensure that there will still be ‘steam in the woods’ in the next generation and it will be here in the Alberni Valley.” The steam donkey demonstration site is also undergoing a facelift. Because Kitsuksis Creek will be rerouted through the McLean Mill site, the spar tree and steam donkey had to be moved back. Some of the trees at the far end of the site will be felled this week to make room for the spar tree, Hooper said.

The steam donkey from McLean Mill National Historic Site is getting an overhaul at the Industrial Heritage Society’s facility on Dunbar Street in Port Alberni. Boilermakers from the east coast of Vancouver Island have been in the Alberni Valley for more than a week, replacing the tubes that create the steam to drive the donkey—a heritage piece of logging equipment. Boilermakers Mike (Rocky) Roxburgh, Barry Pyne, Barry Dobrenksy, Bill Rogers, Jorge Vidal and apprentice Matt Wallace donated their time to mill, roll and bead over the 206 tubes. The boiler was originally built in 1929, said project manager Les Stevens. The Washington Iron Works steam donkey was originally used by the R.B. McLean Lumber Co. in their logging operations in the Beaufort Mountains surrounding Port Alberni. The 206 steel tubes contained in the boiler have to be replaced approximately every 30 years; the last time they were changed was

Procedural issues have stalled a School District 70 decision to close two Alberni Valley elementary schools in September. Trustees passed a motion on March 11 that would see Gill and Eighth Avenue elementary schools closed and VAST moved to a re-purposed Eighth Avenue. All other schools would retain their current configuration. School District 70 administrators reviewed the decision and found that procedural questions have been raised that need to be addressed, superintendent Cam
Pinkerton noted in a press release. A special board meeting has been called for on March 25 to deal with the matter. Calls to Pinkerton weren’t immediately returned. The procedures have to do with School District 70 and BC School Act policies, School District 70 chair Larry Ransom said.“We’re getting a legal opinion about this so I can’t comment much more.” School District 70’s policy on school closures notes that: preceding closure, school enrolments and physical
conditions are monitored; the board will discuss closures with the public at community meetings; consultation with those directly impacted by the intended closure will precede any final decision; and a final decision will be made no later than the second meeting of trustees in May. School closures must also be carried out in accordance with the School Opening and Closure Order as outlined in the BC School Act. School boards are required to develop and implement a policy that includes a school closure public consultation process which is available to the
public, the act notes. The process must include adequate time for public input; consideration of enrolment growth; and consideration of possible alternative community use for all or part of the school. A school can only be closed by a school district bylaw, and the only information the Ministry of Education requires is the school’s name, address, facility number and closure date. At the March 11 meeting trustees took heat from audience members and school district staff because Bennie’s scenario wasn’t given public consultation. Bennie’s option was contained at
school closure public meetings in February, trustee Gaelle Frey said in response to a question from trustee Gurmail Aujla. Frey never elaborated. But a version of Bennie’s option is found within the three options developed by district staff and found in the SD70 website. Option 3A would have been done over three phases. In the third phase, Gill and Eighth Avenue elementary schools would be closed; Wood remains open but is an annex of ADSS. Bennie’s option is the same but sees Wood remain an elementary school instead.

A few articles back, I mentioned that I begin my practice day with a prayer to acknowledge the greater forces at work. Someone asked me what Chiropractic care had to do with God. My head started to spin with the enormity of that question and it has taken me a month to address its breadth and depth. As a healthcare provider in a largely secular society and as a person who is more spiritual than religious, it’s probably professional suicide to share this part of myself but here I go anyway.... I have no real doubt that there is a design but for many years, I struggled with the concept of a designer. My heart sees the beauty and perfection of a human being, especially in our response to health challenges. Even the vast majority of the nervous system is geared towards honoring and caretaking our health instead of just reporting symptoms. In fact, we are divinely wired for health. My head, after many left brained battles, agrees with my heart. It is simply beyond even my analytical mind to believe that we ended up as we are without the benevolent hand of a loving creator. Trillions of chemical reactions, intricate molecular exchange, ingenious DNA and transport systems.... I see and feel the artistry of that design everywhere inside of us. As a Chiropractor having adjusted thousands of people and watching them heal, I am absolutely humbled when I think of the miracles that never came from me but rather through me when I let go, became that empty vessel and let the power that created us go to work. I have the privilege of being part of that design and know that I am just an intermediary in its delivery. I have asked many people the following question: “If God was to deliver a miracle and help heal a person, would he use the nervous system as part of that delivery or enact the miracle randomly?” I have not yet met anyone who didn’t believe God would use our preprogrammed nervous system to actuate that healing. So what does Chiropractic have to do with God? You might as well ask what God has to do with life. Life is our gift from God and what we do with our life is our gift back to God. Health is a part of that design. I do the adjusting and God does the healing. And what if you’re not well? Then he walks that journey with you. I’m happy to be on that path with both of you. Construction is set to begin on a new single span bridge in Port Alberni. The $3 million bridge will be located across Roger Creek on the Redford Extension above West Coast General Hospital. The bridge will be built upstream of the existing culvert system. The culvert is prone to getting plugged by logs upstream. If a large enough obstruction occurred “there would be a very big wall
of water that could wash down into Port Alberni,” said Allan Galambos of BF Binnie and Associates, the project manager. A report to council noted that by replacing the relatively small opening of a culvert with a single span bridge, “risk of washouts will be greatly reduced...” The contract for the new bridge was tendered earlier this year and was awarded to Neel-Co Builders. In response to a question by Coun. Hira Chopra about local hiring, Galambos
responded that Bowerman Excavating would be doing some of the work, and that a local firm is providing the concrete. Construction of the bridge is set to start at the end of March with single lane alternating traffic starting March 31. Public notice will be posted in advance of the project. In response to a question from Mayor John Douglas, WHO said that the bridge will be also able to accommodate pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Work will continue through the summer.
The federal government has committed $1.469 million for a 3.3-kilometre sewage expansion project on the Tseshaht First Nation reserve, ending at Tseshaht Market. Minister of Aboriginal Affairs Bernard Valcourt made the announcement Wednesday morning. The expansion will link to the Santu housing development along the way. Also committing capital funds to the project is the Nuuchah-nulth Tribal Council. President Debra Foxcroft said NTC will provide $629,000 to the initiative. This is about building strong and healthy communities because they are the foundation of economic development, growth and longterm prosperity, Valcourt said. He added that the federal government remains committed to investing in such infrastructure projects to ensure that First Nations have access to safe water and

wastewater facilities. Tseshaht Chief Council Hugh Braker said his community is excited about the opportunities that will be created by the expansion. “For Tseshaht, this is a very important day. This is a day that is going to benefit the future of the Tseshaht people and I believe the future of everyone in the Alberni Valley. The economic spinoff from the development to this sewer line will benefit all of the regional district.” The chief engineering firm for this project is located in the City of Port
Alberni and the jobs from the project will come from that engineering firm, said Braker. While some subcontractors and contractors hired will be Tseshaht, some will not. “The benefits to the community are going to be far reaching and very, very positive,” Braker said. Port Alberni Mayor John Douglas was on hand for the announcement. It’s important to have these types of facilities, he said, and the potential is not just for the growth of the population, but also the economic
growth that is set to occur in the region over the next century. “For Tseshaht, this opens a whole new door for us,” said Braker. “The Tseshaht Market, where the sewer line will end, currently employs over 30 people. It contributes over 30 jobs to the economy in the Alberni Valley. “We believe that the sewer extension is going to expand that and that more jobs are going to be created in what is becoming a business area for this First Nation. Rethink the recycling plan Green machine gathers in Victoria The provincial push for a producer-pay recycling system is based on the concept of charging manufacturers whose products contribute to the waste stream, such as plastic packaging. But the soon to become governmentmandated program is going to penalize some unfairly, including citizens. For instance, it will hit the newspaper industry with a 20 cent per kilogram cost for its “packaging” – the very paper the newspapers are printed on. That vested interest aside, it’s debatable whether the new system will achieve its environmental goals, while simultaneously driving up costs for consumers. Although the MMBC collection system may have benefits for communities that currently do not have adequate curbside recycling programs, it is not needed in Abbotsford, where the city has been achieving high rates of waste diversion through its own recycling and compost collection. Consequently, this city will hold out on joining MMBC for the time being – and that comes at a cost, since MMBC will provide no subsidy for communities whose programs don’t conform to their standards. Maintaining Abbotsford’s current program is good for the environment, and residents who receive curbside pickup of glass containers and other recyclables that MMBC would not collect. Local consumers will effectively pay the cost of recycling twice, as producers build the price of the MMBC program into their products, and taxpayers foot the bill for curbside pickup. Though MMBC recently provided exemptions for small businesses, it will also negatively impact local economic engines such as berry farming, where consumer preference drives the use of plastic clamshell containers for retail sales – dumping the cost onto farmers, and ultimately, customers. This is a program that needs to be put on hold and reconsidered in its entirety. — Abbotsford News

ICTORIA – Canada’s sleek, imported green propaganda machine rolled into the capital last week for a couple of days of meetings. You wouldn’t have heard about it, because they didn’t stage any protests or press conferences. Instead they met quietly with selected reporters as well as politicians from both sides of the aisle. They didn’t invite me for some reason, but from what I can gather, it was a friendly networking session. When I speak of our U.S.directed environmental movement, many people still don’t know what I mean. They see the signwaving on TV and assume it’s all spontaneous, driven by passionate volunteers. It’s an industry now, and as with our automotive industry, Canada is a branch plant of the U.S.
The Victoria event was an annual conference called Organizing for Change, sponsored by Tides Canada. Thanks mainly to the work of B.C. researcher Vivian Krause, this offshoot of the U.S. Tides Foundation now at least identifies itself while it pulls B.C.’s political strings. Organizing for Change currently includes Ecojustice, Greenpeace, Sierra Club B.C., ForestEthics Advocacy, ForestEthics Solutions, Georgia Strait Alliance, Dogwood Initiative, Pembina Institute, West Coast Environmental Law, Wildsight and Seattlebased Conservation Northwest. Tides is itself a front for wealthy charitable foundations based mostly in Seattle and California, funded by billionaires who see “saving” B.C. as their personal eco-project. Their hired activists met
with Environment Minister Mary Polak to discuss her just-introduced Water Sustainability Act. This was to demand heavy fees and choking regulations on water used for “fracking,” that nefarious gas drilling technology so demonized in fake documentaries and celebrity protests. Tides no longer attempts to hide its strategy of targeting energy development in B.C. and Alberta. Its tactics are well known, too. Environmentalists need high-profile wins, and the economic pain is best inflicted outside of the U.S., the biggest polluter in world history. Organizing for Change’s stated priorities for the year are the “last stand of the Great Bear Rainforest,” the “Sacred Headwaters” and the Water Sustainability Act. Professional protesters are mainly just taking

Fuel fairy tale From / A8 to present such a fossil fuel fairy tale. Suffice it to say that while we have busloads of protesters in B.C., you don’t see them in those benevolent petro-states of Angola, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Venezuela, Kuwait or Algeria. They’re not saving the whole planet, just the safe and lucrative parts. And as I mentioned after the protesterstaged Neil Young concert tour, it’s amazing how American oil and
gas interests and Alaska oil tankers remain invisible to this sophisticated network. NDP environment critic Spencer Chandra Herbert met with the green machine too. Mailbag: Feedback on Bulldogs, and bickering at city hall Bulldogs fans are the best To the Editor,
My wife Jean and I would like to thank the Alberni Valley Junior Hockey Society for inviting us to attend their fundraising banquet on Feb. 28. It was much more than just extremely enjoyable. What struck us both was the incredible community spirit which bathed the Athletic Hall with the kind of warmth and support common to nearly all smaller towns and cities (which we both grew up in) but much more difficult to find in a metropolis like Vancouver where we now live. Hockey binds Canadians together perhaps more than any other sport in any other country. But hockey doesn’t teach you to be kind, generous or thoughtful of others. That falls to the people not on the ice and behind the scenes. It was exhilarating and rewarding to see the quality of people in Port Alberni ready and willing to support both the physical and personal development of these young men,
who in exchange literally wear their community on their chest. Whether or not the Bulldog players realize it now, they were privy to a great life lesson at the banquet. Not a fan of BCHL officials To the Editor,
I, along with other Alberni Valley Bulldogs fans, am disappointed our team didn’t make it past the first round of the playoffs. It wasn’t that Victoria outplayed them—it’s because the officials were unable to call a fair game. The forwards on Victoria’s top line area skilled players; why do they find it necessary to use their sticks like weapons instead of tools? The spearing, slashing and highsticking that is part of their game plan is appalling and they should get academy awards for diving and hoping they can draw a penalty. It’s really
unsportsmanlike. There are other diving divas on their team and one of them cost the Bulldogs the seventh game in the third period. If the officiating in the B.C. Hockey League doesn’t improve, the league will suffer. Fans get tired of missed calls for obvious infractions and favoritism shown to some teams. In spite of the biased refereeing, our team had an outstanding second half of the season. Going from the bottom to the playoffs is a real accomplishment. We’re proud of our team and proud to be Bulldog fans. Good luck to the young men who are leaving us and thanks to the team and the coaches for an exciting season that they took to the wire against all odds. Hands off city staff wages To the Editor,
Re: City wages on block, March 13. When the provincial government introduced legislation (Bill 29) in 2002 to gut
union contracts, most fair-minded people were outraged. In 2004, when the same government enacted Bill 37 that further eroded contracts by arbitrarily reducing wages by 15 per cent, most fair-minded people were again outraged. Whether union or non-union, hourly paid or salaried employee, a contract is a contract and must be respected. So it was with great dismay that I read that city councillor Wendy Kerr, herself an HEU member and victim of gutted health care contracts, has proposed that the contracts of city management staff be opened for the purpose of reducing the wages. I am a city taxpayer. While I support cost saving measures where feasible, I do not support costcutting on the backs of any employees. A contract is a contract. You will have an opportunity to address compensation when contracts come up for re-negotiation. In the meantime, honour your existing contracts. Hands off!

Re: Councillors lash out at mayor over lack of trust, Alberni Valley News, Mar. 13. It’s said “the truth will be out”, so thank-you to local newspapers whose articles continue to confirm what has been evident since mayor John Douglas was elected: in tone of voice and manner of addressing the mayor, a barely concealed contempt by incumbent councillors. And thank-you to Port Alberni citizen Neil Anderson, who rightfully scolded councillor Rob Cole for criticizing the mayor with innuendo. It’s about time this council was held to account for its apparent emotional immaturity when, it has had to accept change— including new leadership. Incidentally, I voted for certain “incumbent” councillors, trusting in their maturity to work with new leadership. Now, I expect them to get on with the job I (increasingly!) pay them to do. According to legend, when St. Patrick needed a way to explain the Holy Trinity to the ancient Celts of Ireland in the 5th century, he reached down and plucked a shamrock from the grass. Ford-ging ahead on all fronts in 2014
Other enhancements to the F-150 include a new stepladder that integrates into the tailgate. Ford was the first to have this feature but it has been improved for 2015. The rear tailgate also has a soft-open feature that prevents the tailgate from slamming down, plus a light switch near the back of the truck to eliminate the bed with new LED lights. The second vehicle that will have a big impact of Ford, but more of an image car, is the all-new 2015 Mustang. Interestingly, about 25 percent of all Mustangs are sold here in British Columbia, so this is a big deal for us. The 2015 Mustang is now going to be sold around the world and developed as part of the “One Ford” approach to making cars they can share in every market. This means the Mustang will be sold, for the first time, with right hand drive for countries like the UK, Australia and Japan. The stance of the new Mustang is lower, wider and more muscular, with the wheels pushed out to provide better stability. The fastback has a steeper rake and a bigger trapezoidal grille has enhanced the shark nose design. Initially the Mustang will be sold as a coupe and convertible with the base and GT trim, the higher performance models will come later. Inside is another clean-sheet design, featuring real aluminum switches and dials, with two large gauges behind the steering wheel. The interior looks more upscale than any Mustang before.

Confessions of a Curber My next vehicle came from a used car wholesaler*. There was nothing wrong with it, but he couldn’t find a dealer who wanted it. I gladly took it off his hands. How hip was I? I had a new source of newer vehicles that would come right to me. “Two-year-old car for sale. No previous accident history reported, only 35,000km on it. Call with offer.” Shortly after, I got a call from a young man. His car had just broken down, and he needed a new one fast. He agreed to meet me at the local construction site where he worked. He was just finishing up his lunch when I arrived. He was wearing his construction uniform and I immediately noticed his tired eyes. I felt bad for the poor fellow, and I was glad that I was selling him a reliable vehicle. He didn’t need another headache on top of everything. I even knocked $500 off the price I wanted. It was a smooth transaction. The guyy looke looked edd hhappy and thanked me immensely ely forr all the help. I beamed back at him. Around 5:00 a.m. the next morning, I got a call. It was the construction ructioon worker, yelling so loudly that I could barely ely uunderstand him. “THEY TOOK IT AWAY,” ” he said over and over again. “REPOSSESSED!” !” I hung up on him and triedd to make sense of the situation. Why would the ld th he car be taken away in the middle of the he night? n Who’s “they”? Liens. Of course. The car ha had ad a lien on it. That’s why it wouldn’t sell ell on a lot. The bank must have seized it due to an unpaid balance. As before, I panicked. I didn’t idnn’t want to get involved in this right now. w. Sure, S I sold him the car, but how was I supposed seed to know it had
a lien on it? I realized the wholesaler* had scammed me! If that fellow had asked for a CarProof history report or even a provincial lien search, I’d be the one screaming. Over the next several hours, I kept letting my phone go to voicemail – I couldn’t bear speaking to the young man. I knew I had to switch phones again. I felt a bit ashamed. But I needed to be selfish about this. At this point, the best thing for me was cash. And lots of it. *Wholesaler – Vehicle sellers may call themselves auto brokers or wholesalers to sound legitimate and cheaper. But if they’re selling to private buyers, they must be licensed as a dealer. Like any curber - an individual posing as a private seller but selling vehicles as a business – wholesalers and brokers offer none of the protection the law provides for purchases from a Vehicle Sales Authority licensed dealer. Walt learned that lesson, sson, but his buyer paid the price.

The model year 2014 is already in full swing for Chevrolet as it rolls its products into the Vancouver International Auto Show. Many of the new and revamped products are already in dealerships so let’s take a look at what’s especially notable for this year.
Cruze Diesel
The popular selling compact from Chevrolet, the Cruz, now comes in an even more efficient setup: the Cruze Diesel. While the diesel model was launched last summer, it bears a 2014 designation. Under its hood is a 2.0L turbo-diesel that packs in 151 horsepower and 264 lb.-ft torque. Yes, it has that much torque and is most impressive. According to the Chevrolet, it has a 0-96 km/h (60 mph)
performance of 8.6 seconds, “which is better than the Volkswagen Jetta TDI automatic and competitive with German diesel cars that dominate the North American market.” In addition to that, it receives an estimated fuel consumption of 4.2L/100km on the highway and 7.5L/100km in the city. While the Cruze diesel had already been available in Europe, the proven engine needed to be adapted to North American emissions ratings. It comes standard with a six-speed automatic transmission and 376.6L trunk space. It has an MSRP of $24,945 plus $1,550 destination freight charge.
Impala
Chevrolet’s flagship sedan is all new for the 2014 model year. Released in 2013, this five-passenger vehicle can certainly hold its own in a segment whose competitors are getting stronger and stronger. Among its redeeming new features, an all-new exterior design. I think it looks great. Having had the opportunity to take it for a test drive, Chevrolet has certainly listened to their customers; in the Impala it has given drivers a vehicle that has flair, as well as potency. Its cabin/interior also
received a major overhaul and the result is pleasing to the eyes and to the touch. The 2014 Impala is offered with three engine choices, including two four-cylinder powertrains and a 3.6L V6. Output for the 3.6L V6 is rated at 305 horsepower and 264 lb.-ft. of torque (358 Nm). That is the highest horsepower output in the segment from a naturally-aspirated V6 engine. The Ecotec 2.5L is part of a new family of four-cylinder engines developed with increased efficiency and greater refinement. It is rated at 196 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque The Impala’s Ecotec 2.4L engine with eAssist provides electrical assist in certain conditions to help save fuel. It is rated at 182 horsepower.
Malibu
The 2013 model year brought forth an all-new Malibu. That said, not much has changed for 2014, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t get a few enhancements. For example, there’s now a fuel-saving start-stop technology added to the standard model, rear knee room improved by 1.25 inches (31.7 mm) and chassis and suspension developments enhance drive experience. That’s on top off the overhauled Malibu, on the inside and out.
Camaro Z/28
For those diehard track day fans who have been waiting for an even more performance inspired Camaro, the wait is over. Almost. For 2014, the Z/28 makes its debut. All 2014 Camaro models feature a revised exterior design that integrates high-performance aerodynamics for more efficient cooling and stability at high speeds. However, the new Camaro Z/28 adds features like a full aerodynamics package that creates downforce at speed, which helps make it the most track-capable offering in Camaro’s history. Alongside its aerodynamic prowess, under its hood is a mechanical wonder. Its 7.0L, LS7 V8 hand-assembled engine was co-developed with Corvette Racing to make it as potent as possible. Its monster engine produces an estimated 500 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. With those figures on paper, don’t expect amazing fuel results! Under the hood the GT trim continues with the 5.0L V8 with improved valves and cylinders helping to pump out over 420hp. The base 3.7L V6 is also carried over but now with 300hp. The big news is the introduction
of a 2.3L turbocharged EcoBoost 4-cylinder with an estimated 300hp and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. For years, the criticism has been the lack of independent rear suspension in the Mustang but this is no longer the case. A fully independent rear suspen-
sion will help get all the power down to the ground from all three engines plus provide improved handling. Ford is hoping with this new platform and available engines, this new model will provide as many thrills as any German sports model and for less

Cathy Braiden, a realtor with RE/MAX Mid-Island Realty, has earned a Care award from the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board. Braiden has spent her entire nine-year career as a realtor with RE/MAX. While she has won other awards based on sales, this one is special because it’s based on what she does within her community. “This is an award for my commitment and contributions to the community and to helping charities,” says the mother of six and grandmother of three. For the past eight years, she has donated a portion of every commission to the Children’s Miracle Network, which helps sick children at BC Children’s Hospital. She has supported cancer fundraisers in Port Alberni, donated to the Read and Feed breakfast program, assisted with the transition
house and Bread of Life, made numerous contributions to the Mt. Arrowsmith Skating Club and serves as a safety person with her 12-year-old son’s hockey team. She has also supported two women starting businesses in Third World countries through the worldwide Kiva program. “Although her community service and family commitments keep Cathy busy, she is consistently a top performer in terms of sales, earning numerous awards over the years,” VIREB noted. “Most recently, she was a nominee and finalist for realtor of the year in 2012 through Top Investor Awards.” Along with her award, Braiden has received $500 to donate to a charity. Gymnasts busy at provincials ABASHIRI: | Gymnastic Academy prepares to host athletes from Port Alberni’s sister city in Japan. The Port Alberni Gymnastics Academy (PAGA) athletes had a successful turn at the provincial and high school championships this month. On March 7 Blair Sutton competed for ADSS at BC High School Gymnastics Championships in Nanaimo. She won the all around title for finishing third on vault, first on bars, 10th on beam and second on floor. Three PAGA gymnasts qualified for the provincials in Kamloops last weekend: Abigail Anderson (Level 3 Novice), Haven Gus (Level 3 Tyro) and Kylah MacKenzie
(Level 2 Novice). MacKenzie was third on bars, fourth on beam and 10th all around. Gus was seventh on bars, eighth on beam, second on floor and eighth all around. Anderson finished fifth on vault, seventh on bars, second on beam and fifth all around. The academy prepares to host gymnasts from Abashiri, Port Alberni’s sister city in Japan this week. Japanese athletes arrived Tuesday night and were to practice as well as tour the city, PAGA spokesperson Paula Flemming said.

The last time Kevin Wright threw a pot was in December 2010. Author Lee Maracle reads at NIC March 27 Lee Maracle, author of Sojourners and Sundogs, Daughters are Forever, Will’s Garden and Ravensong, will read from her works at North Island College in Port Alberni on Thursday, March 27. Maracle was born in North Vancouver and is a member of the Sto:lo First Nation. A mother of four and grandmother of seven, Maracle is currently an instructor at the University of Toronto. First published in the 1970s, Maracle is considered one of the most prolific First Nations writers in Canada. She will appear in Room S108 at the NIC Port Alberni campus at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

‘One of the reasons I’m doing this is to share my experiences. It’s been rewarding.’ – Kevin Wright pottery business in order to move into Port Alberni and open Steampunk Cafe and Coffee House. Since then he has also become involved in bringing public art to the uptown core. Next week, he formally begins teaching beginner and intermediate pottery classes at Echo Centre. “One of the reasons I’m doing this is to share my experiences,” says Wright. “It’s been rewarding.” Wright takes over from Cheryl Iwanowsky, who taught the beginner/ intermediate class for seven years. A potter herself for the past 30 years, Iwanowsky spent the past couple of years looking for someone to take over so she could devote more time to her new art gallery, Blue Fish Gallery. “I asked (Kevin) to take over. I was just so happy he said yes.” Iwanowsky will continue to fill in for Wright when he is unavailable, but said she is busy with several projects now. “I’m devoting more time to my own pottery and my

gallery.” Blue Fish Gallery (2907 Second Ave.) features the work of 40 potters from the region including her own work. The pottery classes can accommodate
eight students per six-week session, as there are eight pottery wheels in the classroom. “There is a misconception that pottery here is just for seniors,” says Rondi Shanks from Parks, Recreation and Heritage. “They have a great program going. Cheryl has run this program for adults and it’s always filled
up.” Parks and Rec also runs a spring children’s program with Lee Stead, called Clay Kids 1 and Clay Kids 2. There is also a week-long summer pottery camp. Wright advocated for separate classes for beginners and intermediate potters. One day he hopes to offer a full intermediate class in addition to beginners. Lazy Mike releases CD It seems ironic that a band called “Lazy Mike and the Rockin’ Recliners” has quickly become one of the hardest working Blues Bands on Vancouver Island. This Saturday, March 22 the band will release its third CD at the Capitol Theatre. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the joint
starts jumpin’ at 8 p.m. Lazy Mike and the Rockin’ Recliners have been rockin’ Vancouver Island since 2007. With two previous CD releases behind them, the band is excited to announce the release of their third CD of blues originals called Rollin’
Through This World. Band members are “Lazy” Mike Mallon on vocals and harmonica, Mark “West Coast” Comerford on guitar and vocals, Bob “Blue” Berry on bass and vocals, and Ryan Connell on drums. Plus the band will be featuring special guest Dan Dube on piano and organ.

The BC Government is proposing to offload the province’s world-class recycling programs, run by local municipalities, to an association led by big multi-national corporations. The idea is that we’ll get a better, more efficient program that costs taxpayers less.
Currently, BC homeowners only pay, on average, $35 a year for curbside recycling. Under the proposed regime, you’ll pay more. Every time you bring home a pizza, buy toilet paper,
Unfortunately, what we’ll really end up with is anyone’s guess.
How much more? Well, nobody’s saying.
The association isn’t guaranteeing that we’ll get a better program, or even one as good as the current Blue Box program already in place. Since the association is led by big businesses outside of BC, many of whom are not even headquartered in Canada, one could presume that profits will come before environmental stewardship. They usually do. They also won’t guarantee that there won’t be any job cuts here in BC.
Here’s the only thing anyone does know: we already have a Blue Box program that works, is efficient, managed locally and puts the BC environment first. So why is the BC government flipping a coin, bringing in a questionable recycling program that some of our local elected officials are already calling a “scam?”
And how is this supposed to make things better for BC?

What about the new mirrorless cameras, touted as being the future, replacing the DSLR (digital single lens reflex)? Looking on the plus side the mirrorless cameras have interchangeable lenses, most have a larger sensor than “point and shoot” cameras, sturdy bodies, no mirror, are smaller and lighter, and have some accessories. On the negative side the majority have no viewfinder, which means it is going to be very hard to shoot outside in full sunlight. They struggle to focus in low light, have a problem focusing when the subject is moving towards you and battery life is not as long as a DSLR. Digital cameras have a shutter life. Nikon D4’s shutter has a life of 400,000 actuations, Nikon D800 has 200,000 actuations, Nikon D700 and D7100 have 150,000, Nikon D3000 and D5000 have 100,000 actuations. After that the shutter is kaput (to replace an electronic shutter is about $250–$300). To find out how many actuations have been used on a Nikon camera, go to www. nikonshuttercount. com and follow the instructions. The following are a few things that you should know. 1) When you are taking a photo, press the shutter button halfway to pre-focus and set the exposure, then gently press the shutter button all the way down. 2) Get in close to
the subject to make a photographic impact. 3) Turn the camera vertically to shoot a single person. 4) Look out for glare and reflection from windows and photo frames. 5) Before you squeeze that shutter button, look around and behind the subject. Are there trees growing out of Uncle Bob’s head? Kleenex on the ground in front of the bride? 6) In the viewfinder or on the screen, check to see if the horizon is straight or that the lines in the image straight. Some cameras have a grid that can be an overlay on the screen/ viewfinder. 7) If you are shooting in JPEG, make sure that you are shooting in FINE JPEG or whatever is your highest choice. Did you hear? Apple’s Macs can get malware. Previously there was a back door application that took screen shots and uploaded the info to remote servers. That malware was called OSX/KitM.A. A Trojan was found making the Mac rounds, called ‘Flashback S”. What it did was it made your computer open to data theft—stealing your info, bank passwords etc. A Man-in-theMiddle attack was very recent: if you used Wi-Fi at a public spot you would think that you are communicating with another computer, but everything is filtered through the man in the middle malware.
