Major facelift for historic dam $748-million upgrade in progress at Ruskin Dam Alina Konevski ABBOTSFORD NEWS

An historic hydroelectric dam on Mission’s Stave River is getting a major facelift. But even as crews work to rebuild the structure almost entirely, the Ruskin Dam is still operating at two-thirds capacity and pumping electricity into the BC Hydro grid. The upgrade is being done at a cost of $748 million over a six-year period, to be completed in 2018. It is the first significant renovation on the 85-year-old dam. The seven old spillway gates, which control the flow of water through the dam, will become five wider gates. The massive cement piers that held up Hayward Street directly over the dam have been deconstructed block

by block. New towers will hold up a much wider road and allow for two-lane, two-way traffic atop the dam. Pedestrians will enjoy a new walkway. When construction began 1929, it was “built right,” said BC Hydro senior construction manager Robert Peever. “It was state of the art at the time,” he said. “It really took some neat engineering solutions to be able to do it.” The Stave River proved so productive for generating hydroelectric power that the Ruskin Dam was stationed at a narrow gorge less than six kilometres downstream of the Stave Falls Dam, completed 17 years prior. Stats Canada surveys homes for emergency preparedness Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Statistics Canada will be calling about 600 homes in Abbotsford and Mission for its Emergency Preparedness and Resilience in Canada survey. Participants will be randomly selected and anyone living at a cho-

sen home aged 15 or over can participate. The survey will be conducted over the telephone until June 2014 and results will be available by fall 2015. Questions relate to risk awareness, social network, community engagement and emergency preparedness,

as well as basic demographic information, like health, education, and household income. The results from this survey will provide information on how well individuals and communities are able to prepare for, respond to, and recover from a disaster or major emer-

gency and may be used to develop emergency management and safety programs. Results will help communities to develop and deliver strategies to improve preparedness and resilience. More and more people are interested in being prepared for an emer-

gency, said Nancy Bartlett, owner of Life472, a Mission business which sells emergency preparedness kits and educates the public on how to be ready. “Unfortunately, when other disasters happen, that’s when the message gets brought home,” she stated. “The

more you are prepared, the more you can help others.” Bartlett started her business two years ago after she struggled to find an emergency preparedness kit to purchase. An emergency kit should include enough food and water for you

and your family for 72 hours, whistle, emergency blanket, waterproof matches, as well as copies of your insurance papers, medications, and some cash. For more information visit www.statcan. gc.ca/survey-enquete/ household-menages/5208-eng.htm.

Funding for pilot project approved Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

The municipality is purchasing 500 water meters for a pilot project to compare water consumption in older homes against newer homes. The meters will be installed in the West Heights area where about 500 residences that were built in the 1970s have water meters in place. The old meters will be replaced with new

ones so all homes that are part of the study will have the same equipment. All the homes will also have the new radio-read meter, which will be read monthly. There are about 300 homes built since 2009 equipped with water meters that will also be part of the program. These residents pay for water based on consumption. West Heights residents who are part of the project will con-

tinue to be billed the flat rate ($465/year) for water. “Residents won’t notice a difference [in service or billing],” said Rick Bomhof, Mission’s director of engineering. “We don’t want them to change their habits.” The 800 homes being sampled for the project represent about nine per cent of residential customers using district water services. While other communities may have conducted similar studies,

the best data is always from your own community, said Bomhof. “There are always intricacies and variations on why one community consumes more [water] than others.” It also gives the district the ability to manage the pilot program and introduce initiatives to try to reduce water consumption based on local needs, he added. The pilot project will cost the district about $245,000 and is

expected to be in place by late spring after all the equipment is purchased and installed. Last year council debated whether or not to offer a water metering program in Mission, but councillors chose to investigate the consumption in older homes first. Newer residences are equipped with energy-saving appliances and low-flow systems, said Coun. Larry Nundal at the time.

Patient Testimonial

Prior to being a patient with Dr’s Surdhar and Lui, I’d have described myself as an “apprehensive” patient. The one that wishes the upcoming circled date on the calendar was past.

Fraser Valley Astronomers Society member Paul Greenhalgh addresses about 100 people who braved the rain for the ground breaking ceremony for the Observatory to be built in Fraser River Heritage Park. BOB FRIESEN PHOTO

Observatory construction now underway Seven gold-plated shovels hit the grass Saturday (March 8) to break ground for Mission’s new observatory at Fraser River Heritage Park. About 90 people attended the ceremony to officially launch the project, said Fraser Valley

Astronomers Society (FVAS) member Brian Antonson. Mayor Ted Adlem, MLAs Marc Dalton and Simon Gibson, Mission Rotary Club’s John Bowers, FVAS president Paul Greenhalgh, and Mission Heritage Association’s Klaus Werner spoke briefly

about the project, and several FVAS members set up their own telescopes to give the participants a preview of what’s to come. The Rotary Observatory and Space Science Centre will be located at the southwest corner of the park. About $140,000

has been raised to construct the 2,100-square-foot building, but more funds are needed to equip the centre, said Antonson. The facility will have a prime telescope at least 20 inches in diameter, and numerous smaller telescopes,

as well as a solar unit for daytime use. An opening date has not been determined as fundraising efforts are still continuing. If you would like more information about the observatory, or to make a donation, call the park office at 604826-0277.

Meeting planned to learn about logging plans A meeting is being organized by the Hatzic Prairie, Durieu, McConnell Creek Ratepayers Association (HPDMCRA) to discuss a proposal to log 49.5

hectares of Crown land on the north side of Pattison Creek. Everyone in the Hatzic Valley area is encouraged to attend because Pattison Creek

affects the entire area, said HPDMCRA president Sharie Conroy. Conroy said representatives from the logging company will be at the meeting to

discuss the plans and listen to residents’ concerns. Some concerns, according to Conroy who has lived in the area for 41 years, relate to the

stability of the creek’s banks and flooding. The meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. on March 20 at McConnell Creek Hall, 35483 Hartley Rd.

After a few procedures with the dentists at Bridgeview Dental I can happily say that I no longer dread the upcoming appointments and look forward to seeing the friendly dental team and having my dental work done. Even a recent extraction and implant that followed was without discomfort. I feel confident in the treatment they provide me knowing they keep up with what’s new in the dental field with their continuing education and study club participation. Heather

Well, lookie here. One minute you have a perfectly good Blue Box recycling program. The next, something new and rather questionable is being put in its place. And they thought they’d get away with it right under your nose, without telling you or asking your opinion. That’s definitely not democracy in action. The BC Government, elected by us to represent our best interests, has decided to offload the costs of recycling to big multi-national corporations. To implement this new plan, they’ve set up an association that doesn’t really seem to hold the environment, local jobs, or the municipalities that run the Blue Box program, close to its heart.

Perhaps that’s why some of our local elected officials are using the word “scam” to describe how the new program is being set up. It’s also perhaps why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to jump on board. That’s gotta tell you something. Now it’s your turn to let Premier Christy Clark know what you think. Contact her today to say that dismantling an already-working recycling program to replace it with something that few people think will be as good, is a bad idea.

What’s going on here?

Once work is completed, the dam will provide enough eletricity to power 33,000 ALINA KONEVSKI PHOTO homes.

Service for 75 years FROM 01

ated the Hayward Lake Reservoir, used as a recreational destination today. The dam is named after the small community of Ruskin, which was initially founded by John Ruskin in the mid-1800s. The philosopher and writer tried to create an arts and farming commune but that fell apart within a few years. The dam now needs major seismic upgrades, which will allow it to withstand an earthquake that occurs once in 10,000 years, according to BC Hydro. “They didn’t plan for earthquakes back then,” explained Peever. In addition to the rebuilding of the spillway piers, the powerhouse’s interior and exterior are being reconstructed. The large switchyard that

sits atop the powerhouse roof will be moved to a more secure location a few hundred feet away. The three power generating units inside will eventually be replaced with higher efficiency ones. The construction has created several hundred temporary jobs at the site. When completed, the dam will provide enough electricity to power 33,000 homes and will last, Peever hopes, another three-quarters of a century. Despite all the changes, what will remain constant is that one lightbulb near the floor of the control room at Ruskin Dam. Possibly the oldest lightbulb in B.C., it has given off a continuous low voltage orange-yellow light since the dam started operating in 1930.

Are you prepared for emergency?

In the past few years, there have been a number of natural catastrophes around the globe that we in this corner of the world have had the immense good fortune to “experience” only as media consumers. Each time, we should have paused to reflect upon our own level of preparedness for disaster. Experts have long been warning that the B.C. coast sits on a major fault line. It is a matter of when, not if, a killer quake hits this area. In the days that follow virtually every major quake and/or massive storm, thousands of people are injured, homeless, and searching for water and food. Emergency services are often overwhelmed or cut off. Countless households – including those that escape damage – are simply not prepared to handle such a critical emergency with the most basic supplies and plans.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Are we? The answer is, for the majority, no. The ramifications of a major quake will be the same here as they are elsewhere. Stores will be damaged, and those that aren’t will be void of essential supplies in hours. Transportation will be severely interrupted. Telephone and Internet is likely to be down. So, do you have a survival kit in your home? Do you have a complete first aid kit, and the knowledge to use it? Do you have alternate shelter in case your home is uninhabitable? Do you at least have enough water to last three days, for your entire family? Do you have enough food on hand to last that long, or longer? If you answered no to any of the above, you have a choice. You can become prepared now, or ignore this latest warning – at your peril.

Is it irresponsible to not vaccinate a child for preventable diseases? To answer, go to the Home page of our website: www.missioncityrecord.com

LAST WEEK WE ASKED: Do you think the lack of confidence in the mayor motion should have been rescinded? Here’s how you responded:

YOUR VIEWS Industrializing waterfront could harm river Re: Barge loading returning to Mission, March 7 edition. The Mission waterfront is known to be critical habitat for endangered white sturgeon, one of our community’s treasures. Council’s recent move to reverse Mission’s ban on barge loading on the Fraser River threatens sturgeon habitat, and completely disregards the environmental and

social importance of a healthy river ecosystem to our community. Lifting the moratorium opens the floodgates for massive industrial expansion by the Vancouver Port Authority and others, potentially bringing increased noise, truck traffic through the downtown, and pollution of the river. The floodplain of the Fraser also creates

prime agricultural soils necessary for our community’s food security. These soils will be damaged by contamination and compaction due to the influx of trucks and heavy equipment destined for the barges. Proponents of industrialization of our riverfront claim it will create jobs, but appear to disregard the economic value of the world’s number one salmon

river, which has been estimated to bring $6 million each year to the local economy from the lucrative sports fishing industry, not to mention the importance of the salmon to area wildlife and eagles. Surely there must be a way to enhance Mission’s economy without destroying our environmental heritage. Tracy Lyster Mission

Neither side of debate has clean hands Much has been said about the current acrimony surrounding the dispute between the B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) and those we elected to decide the issue at (not on) the table. If we follow the money, it will take us back to the point where this whole issue has arisen decades ago. It will also show that none of the participants in this dispute come to the

table with clean hands. Not the government of the day, not the BCTF, and with all due respect, certainly not the judiciary. In the now somewhat obscure past, some eager-eyed bean counters realized that the then-in-effect “special education” classes cost more than the “regular” classroom cost per student. Quite legitimately, due to smaller class size and

the teachers requiring specialized training. So presto, lump all students into the general student population. The teachers, again quite legitimately, plumped for smaller class sizes. Now enter the BCTF, smaller class sizes, more dues-paying BCTF members, more power to the BCTF. Peter Bandi Maple Ridge

Monday night magic will continue on the Opening Nite Theatre stage until the end of the year. The Third Monday Magic shows feature performers from the Fraser Valley Magic Circle (FVMC), a local chapter of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, and special guests. The shows are held on the third Monday of each month. A different genre of magic, like comedy, stage and kids magic, is selected for each show, said Mike Norden, a popular children’s entertainer who goes by the stage name Norden the Magician. The most popular nights are the ones aimed at kids and those who are kids at heart, Norden added. The next show is March 17. Norden describes the lineup for the night as “amazing” with clowns, a ventriloquist, jugglers, face painters, and of course, magicians. “Shows like this don’t happen very often, so we are doing our best to bring some quality entertainment to the Fraser Valley,” said Norden, the show’s emcee and producer. He is also the vice-president and a FVMC founding member. Tickets to the show are $10 for adults, and kids under 12 are admitted without charge. For more information, or to buy your tickets, visit www. fvmc.ca. Opening Nite Theatre is located at 33223 North Railway Ave. across from the West Coast Express station.

Chamber AGM March 20: Bylaw Changes & Nominees On March 20th the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its 121st Annual General Meeting. Part of the monthly networking luncheon, the event will ask members to endorse by-law changes and yearly financials and elect new Directors to the governing Board and its Executive. The Mission Chamber is governed by the federal Board of Trade Act under the authority of Industry Canada. Changes to its name, governing region, and bylaws are subject to final approval by the Privy Council of Canada. In 2010 the Mission Chamber submitted long overdue changes to Industry Canada that outlined its name and region of representation. Due to changes in Ottawa, the Chamber has been asked to resubmit these petitions to the Privy Council for approval. The map in this article outlines the region the Mission Chamber serves in representing business interests. While the Chamber

had been operating in this fashion for many decades, Industry Canada had the Chamber’s listing as it stood in 1893 so a need for update is required. Additionally, the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce has had many name changes since its inception in 1893 including the Mission City Board of Trade and Mission City Chamber of Commerce. At some point in the late 20th century, the name was formally changed to reflect the business areas which it represents to the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce. Both of these changes will need to be ratified by the membership again in order to file a new petition and bring the organization in alignment with Industry Canada’s records. Other bylaw changes that will be submitted to membership for approval include; reduction of the size of the Board of Directors to three executive positions and 8 additional voting directors, updating the

communication channels to members for the AGM to include online mediums, and options for the executive of the Board to serve successive years. For information on the bylaw changes go to www.MissionChamber.bc.ca NOMINEES The Board is presently seeking five directors to fill open positions on the Board. Terms of service are two years and nominees are required to be members in good standing of the Chamber of Commerce. Nominations that will be presented by the Board of Directors include: Andrea Walker, Walker Park Media Andrea Walker is a freelance graphic designer and photographer and has been operating Walker Park Media, a boutique digital design agency serving small and medium business since 2010. Originating from Maple Ridge, Andrea was chair of Maple Ridge SPAC in 2011 before leaving her position when her family moved to

Mission. Andrea is currently chair of the Mission Horse Club communications committee and organizer of Help Portrait Ridge Meadows Dustin Hughes, IGL Financial Solutions Dustin joined IGL in April of 2011. He specializes in Group Benefit solutions including the Chamber of Commerce Group Insurance Plan. He is dedicated to learning about his clients’ goals in order to help them build a secure plan for their future. Dustin pursues an active lifestyle with his wife outside of his professional life. Elyssa Lockhart, RDM Lawyers, LLP Elyssa’s experience in governance both in education and as a past director of AMSSA, has been a significant asset to the Chamber and its revision of the by-laws. With family roots in the surrounding community, Elyssa recognizes the potential and opportunity Mission’s future provides. Satti Grewal DIRECTOR

What an amazing month it was in February! After years of planning evaporated into months and then into days first by a handful then a couple of hundred then a few thousand people, Mission hosted a hugely successful BC Winter Games. The passion, energy and commitment of so many people proved that when needed the response can be overwhelming. From every part of the province people converged on Mission and got to know the place that many are fortunate to call home. As important those visitors will take back stories of commendable efforts by caring people. Mission has been seen in a new light by many. During the opening ceremonies I sat beside a City Councilor from Penticton, the city that will host the next winter games, and chatted about the monumental but very rewarding task that lies ahead for them. She was excited by what she

was seeing; hearing and learning in her time with us and no doubt will have a great template to use as her City prepares for their event. There is no doubt that the Mission 2014 BC Winter Games will resonate for many for years to come from the legacy that it will leave for our community. Who knows maybe even some day in the future we will be watching an athlete from the Mission Games perform their event at a Winter Olympics. For the community and for business this event was a big boost and was welcomed by so many. Congratulations and thanks to all the wonderful athletes, parents, coaches, trainers and supporters who came to Mission and a big than you to each and every one of the many volunteers. Success was shared by all!

MACL is working hard to help people become employed and stay employed Mission Association for Community Living (MACL) is Mission’s largest non-profit organization and has a 55 year history as an integral part of the Mission community. Their Employment Services are built on the belief that everyone can work if they find the right fit. They provide businesses with the right match for the jobs they need filled as well as offer on-site training for every employee hired, and support and education for employers interested in hiring people with disabilities. This is a free service to business that saves time and the typical costs associated with recruitment. MACL’s Employment Specialist first spends

time getting to know the business and how to best fill the need. Trust and authenticity are keys to a successful job match. Employers report saving time and money on training while watching productivity and staff morale increase. If needed, jobs can then be tailored to meet the specific requirements of both the employer and the job seeker, creating an ideal condition for employment. Once hired, a job coach is available to work one to one with the new employee and employer to ensure the job performance meets or exceeds the company’s standards. On-going support is provided.

Feedback from star employers in Mission has been positive. "We were really in need of some help in our office. The hours were only part time so it was difficult to find and keep someone. What a great asset Shea has been to our company. We are finally able to get things done that were only piling up before! Now we look for other positions with our company, hoping to provide even more opportunities to their clients," says Rita Mackenzie, Administrator FVTP. If you are interested in hiring or would just like more information please contact MACL Employment Services at 604-820-1815.

Cypress Hills steps into downtown revitalization It takes guts to be an early adopter, and Cypress Hills has what it takes. Taking on redevelopment of the building that two years ago was closed down due to building code infractions, Cypress Hills is investing up to $600,000 to help start the revitalization of business and residence in Mission’s downtown core. Seeing the potential of a heritage style strip that has so much character and foundation, Cypress Hills is enhancing the look of the building located midblock on the most western part of Mission’s “heritage corridor”. Redevelopment of the building will provide an attractive and inviting space for potential tenants, retailers or offices (in the upper floor).

“The District of Mission has been fantastic to work with,” explains Ross Bradsen, owner of Cypress Hills. “Being a construction company for the past 25 years, we have seen

how difficult many districts in the Lower Mainland can be to deal with. The staff at Mission’s City Hall have given us nothing but support and shown great

Bradsen adds, “Since becoming owners of previous property in Mission about 5 years ago, we are very excited to invest in the heritage corridor of Mission’s heart . . . It shows nothing but potential as upgrades continue with the revitalization process.” The two way street scape planned for First Avenue will have a new and inviting early addition. For more information on this project contact Stacey Crawford, Economic Development Office, District of Mission.

Third annual Pick & Pub March 16 The Mission Adopt-A-Block Society’s fundraiser will see volunteers picking up litter in the downtown This year the colour green doesn’t only represent St. Patrick’s Day, it also represents your support of your community and the local environment. The Mission AdoptA-Block Society is holding its third annual Pick & Pub event March 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This event is open to all ages and will include a cleanup of the downtown. Volunteers will be put in groups and given sections of the area to clean. Once finished, volunteers will meet at Mission Station Grill for lunch and festivities including a special roast beef buffet for a discounted price of $10, including tax. Volunteers are encouraged to dress up in costume for their chance to win

some great prizes. If you don’t have an outfit, just wear green to show your support. Registration will take place at the Mission Station Grill parking lot (under the Adopt-ABlock Tent), from 11 to 11:30 a.m., and you will be provided with all the equipment you need to complete the cleanup. With such a wet and dreary winter, the streets of Mission are looking more littered than usual. This is a great event to help bring awareness to community needs, cleanup the downtown area and celebrate the volunteers’ efforts. If you would like more information, to donate prizes or to pre-register, please call 604-826-9423 or email missionadoptablock@ gmail.com.

THE JOYS OF VIRTUOSITY

It is almost always more enjoyable to do something that we do well rather than something at which we fail miserably. Whether playing a sport or a musical instrument, the better we get at it, the more pleasure we usually derive from the activity. But this doesn’t mean that we have to be virtuosos. Not everyone can play the cello like Yoyo Ma or play tennis like Venus Williams. The good news is that it doesn’t really matter how well we play. What gives most of us satisfaction is that we are getting better. When we start to learn something new, the learning curve is steep, and so we see rapid improvement, which generates a lot of satisfaction. After a while however, we inevitably hit a plateau, where it requires considerably more effort to improve. These plateaus are the tough spots where we have to persevere and redouble our efforts. We will be rewarded, but it takes time and effort. Therefore, we should remember the old adage: that if it’s worth doing; it’s worth doing right. And, since many activities take years to perfect, it may be best to also tell ourselves that if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing poorly when we’re just starting out. We should just do it with the aim of getting better at it!

In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to want. — R.S.V. Proverbs 14:23

District Update THIS IS OUR MISSION In the Spotlight Spring Break in Mission If you are looking for something for the kids to do this spring break, you don’t have to look any further than the Mission Leisure Centre. From March 17 to 21, the Leisure Centre is hosting a number of activities including Camp Wanarok, drop-in gym and swim programs, as well as a special “Hunt for Gold” event to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. For registration and more information, contact the Leisure Centre at 604-8205350 or visit our web site at www.mission.ca and click on Parks, Recreation and Culture.

Get Involved

out” event runs from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Residents are encouraged to take this hour of darkness to talk about ways we can all conserve energy, as individuals and as a community. Earth Hour was started in Sydney, Australia in 2007, and now more than 153 countries participate in this annual awareness event. The District of Mission has been an active registrant with Earth Hour for the last three years, demonstrating the District’s commitment to battling climate change.

The idea of Earth Hour is to turn off all lights for one hour on a Saturday in the spring time to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming. Consider registering as an individual on the Earth Hour web site at www.earthhour. org.

Spring/Summer Leisure Guide Now that the winter days seem to be behind us (Àngers crossed!), it’s time to start thinking about a new season of recreational activities in Mission. The Spring/ Summer Leisure Guide is now online at www.mission. ca/leisureguide. From swimming to golf to roller derby, there is an amazing range of activities to meet your interests.

Council Salaries: Tell us what you think! The Mayor and members of Council all receive Ànancial compensation for the work that they do. This remuneration gives an incentive to community members that may want to hold public ofÀce, and also shows appreciation for the time and commitment required to effectively govern the District of Mission. Currently, the District’s policy includes a salary of $64,560.60 for the Mayor and $22,340.88 for each member of Council. In addition, the Mayor also receives a travel allowance of $200 per month and members of Council receive $100 per month. Medical Services Plan, extended health and dental beneÀts are offered to the Mayor, with 100 per cent of the premium being paid for by the District. Other members of Council and all their dependents may participate in these beneÀts but must pay their own premiums.

PUBLIC MEETINGS OF COUNCIL

Council is considering a new policy on council remuneration and expenses and wants to hear back from the community. Highlights of the proposed changes include a Mayor’s salary of $70,178 per year and a Councillor’s salary of $26,705 per year, based on the average of numerous comparable municipalities in BC. The monthly travel allowance for both Mayor and Council would be eliminated. Councillors would receive an additional $600 per month for serving as Acting Mayor. (Councillors alternate turns and take on this role two months each year). These new salary levels would only come into after the next election, and must be approved by the newly elected Council. Under the new policy, Council salary levels would be reviewed every three years, and in the intervening years salaries would be adjusted using the consumer price index.

District of Mission Council wishes to invite you to the following open and regular meetings of Council which are scheduled for the weeks of:

Visit www.mission.ca to review the full proposed policy and send us your thoughts to info@mission.ca

So far, I’ve looked at econo cars at the lower end of the market. No point in me offering price details because all Euro cars are substantially more expensive than the same examples sold here in Canada. Finally, I cast a close eye over the Audi S1, which is a hot sportback version of the popular A1. It comes with a 228hp 2.0-litre turbocharged gas engine capable of hitting 100 km/h in less than six seconds. I will reveal it will sell for more than $40,000 in the UK. It’s fast, it’s a premium offering and I’ll eat my hat if it shows up here. All of the above have great fuel economy going for them and most are competitively priced. The common keys to their success likely come down to two key factors. Impressive fuel consumption numbers matter because fuel in Europe is substantially more expensive than here. And Europe is crawling with folks going about their daily duties on often far less land and road space. While there is a greater acceptance of smaller vehicles in our cities, people outside urban areas have more ground to cover and so are tempted by larger vehicles, especially as a first family vehicle. And the truth is that the advances in fuel saving technology means there’s not a massive difference between the econo-cars and small family sedans. And perhaps a bigger factor is for “an extra $20 a month, madam, you could have the roominess and utility of this car.” A line heard in most dealerships, most days. And the sales people are not wrong. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Special PERKS for MISSION residents!!

The diminutive Fiat 500 goes big By Alexandra Straub

The Fiat 500 is cute but might not be the most practical choice as a family vehicle. Enter the all-new-for-2014 Fiat 500L: The “L” stands for “large” so those interior volume deficiencies listed with its pint-sized sibling are no more. Dimensionally, the L is 27 inches longer, 6 inches taller in height and in width and there’s an extra 42 percent when it comes to inside space. But wait, there’s more. Literally. The L comes with two additional doors to allow for easy access to the rear seats. And room for five passengers. It loses a little bit of its pinch-the-cheeks cuteness but its practicality makes up for it. In the driver’s seat, you have an almost unadulterated outward visibility. The 500L features a

segment-exclusive glass from the A- to D-pillars that provide nearly 360-degree panoramic views. Parking is easy because you can pretty much see out of all four corners. And the 500L – even with its “large” designation – still fits comfortably into urban settings. Driving the 500L, I noticed it doesn’t have quite the same amount of panache as the 500 Turbo. Granted, it’s a heavier vehicle. But to still keep some of the driving fun behind the wheel, Fiat has outfitted it with a 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine that provides 160 horsepower, 184 lb-ft. of torque. It’s also available with two transmission options. Firstly, there’s a 6-speed manual. Then there’s an available 6-Speed Euro Twin Clutch “automatic.” The latter of the two costs an additional $1,450 and came equipped on my 500L Lounge trim.

To be honest, this dual clutch transmission was my least favourite part of the vehicle. It felt as though the gearing was off or it had some sort of gremlin inside causing a ruckus to disturb the smooth functionality of what I would have expected. On the flip side, there’s nothing that I felt was fundamentally wrong with it. The transmission changed gears, got the car moving and did exactly what it was supposed to do. It also just felt weird/awkward to me and unlike any other dual clutch transmission, I’ve operated. Perhaps it is one of those features I would just need to get used to over time but our time together wasn’t long enough for me to embrace its quirks! There were, however, other highlights of the 500L. The Lounge trim comes standard with leather trimmed bucket seats and front heated seats, perfect

for those chilly mornings. An upgraded item that was optioned on the L was the Uconnect system with a 6.5inch screen (the standard is a 5-inch screen) complete with Bluetooth, Sirius satellite radio and a Beats Premium Audio System ($500.) If you’re a music lover, this is a great to add to a Fiat. Hill Start Assist and 4− Wheel ABS brakes are part of its DNA along with a ParkView rear back−up camera, dual zone climate controls and steering wheel mounted audio controls. When cruising along at highway speeds, road noise is kept to a minimum, which allowed me to enjoy the music via the Beats stereo system a little more. In corners, the 500L doesn’t have as tight of a setup as the 500, so don’t push it too hard since body roll is more evident.

Confessions of a Curber I was itching to sell another car. I‘d spent my first cash quickly. The new TV looked great in my living room. So I scrounged the dealer lots in my neighbourhood. I found the perfect car at a small dealership not far from my house. Gray with four doors. Everything was still intact, but it was priced low. The dealer gave me the car’s history right away. It had been in three accidents over its lifetime. Nothing too major, but damage was done and repaired. I couldn’t spot the repairs. So, I happily bought it and registered it. I didn’t want my wife and kids to know what I was up to, so I parked it around the block. I knew it would be gone in a few days. This time, I used Kijiji and Craigslist. “Car for sale. Served me well, but wife wants a new car. Accident and damage free. Looking to sell fast, low price. Cash only. Call cell for info.” I got a text message from a woman across town. I told her I’d meet her at a nearby gas station and would throw in a free tank of gas. She was thrilled. When I met her, she told me that she needed a cheap, dependable vehicle to get to her new job. She’dd been taking the bus for weeks and was tired of her commute. To my annoyance, she wanted to check the vehicle thoroughly. So I distracted her. I told her I was sad to let “my baby” go, but I

wanted to keep my wife happy. She nodded sympathetically. As she handed me the money, she asked if the vehicle was in any accidents. Now, I’m not a good liar. So I simply said, No. It’s her fault for not asking for a CarProof or ICBC vehicle history report. That seemed to do it. She was pleased and drove away with a smile on her face. As for me, I went home with a fat wallet. A few days later, I got a text: “Got CarProof report. Three accidents?!?!? Need money back now!!!” I panicked. But not for long. I was getting good at this. I just got a new cell number. She didn’t know my name – that old fake ID worked great. And she had no idea where I lived. Finding me would wear her out. I was in the clear. But will I be so lucky next time? *Curber – An individual posing as a private seller, but selling vehicles for profit as a business. Refreshed RX350 ups the sportiness factor

By Zack Spencer

2014 Lexus RX 350 F-Sport Toyota is known for building high quality cars with fantastic resale value and has grabbed more Canadian Black Book “Best Retained Value” Awards than any other manufacturer. In the Lexus line of cars and SUVs, the best seller by far is the RX 350 midsized SUV. Built using parts common to other Lexus and Toyota products, it represents a lot of what Toyota/Lexus is doing right. The engine is powerful but still thrifty enough for

to mimic a spindle used in a fabric loom. This is a tip of the hat to the origins of the Toyota Company as a textile maker. LED marker lights and a deeper chin spoiler frame the more aggressive grille. The larger 19-inch wheels come in a smoked satin finish and the

suspension is tweaked for more performance. Around back, all RX 350 models come with a power rear lift gate. One of the reasons the RX is so popular is the aggressive starting price. The base model, with the same engine as this F-Sport, starts at $46,150 making it a very attractive alternative to buying a spendy German SUV. The F-Sport model is $55,400 but comes almost fully loaded, with only two options available, the Intuitive Parking Assist and Heads up Display, which brings the price to $58,850 Inside The 2014 RX is a mid-cycle refresh of the model that was introduced in 2010. Unfortunately, Lexus didn’t refresh the inside of the cabin at all, keeping the updates to the exterior and driveline. Not to say that the inside is a disappointment, rather that some things could be tweaked. I’ll start with the positives. The cabin has plenty of room for a family of four with a big back seat and lots of legroom. The materials used are of the highest order and the RX is put together well. The controller for the communications and navigation system is unique in the industry, mimicking a computer mouse. It feels very natural and the driver rarely needs to take their eyes of the road. The array of buttons and their less than logical layout could do with an update. The F-Sport comes which heated and cooled seats but it took me about five minutes to locate the switch in the centre armrest. The dial for the tuner is as far away from the driver as it could be and the seating position is very high. Drive At the heart of all RX 350 models is a very versatile 3.5L V6 engine with 270hp. The F-Sport is made sportier by the inclusion of an 8-speed automatic transmission instead of the regular 6-speed unit. By adding two more gears this new model really jumps away from a stop and pulls very well to highway speeds. Two extra gears make a world of difference, helping to bring the engine to life and improving fuel economy. The suspension has also been modified to include a sport tuned dampers and springs. I could certainly tell this RX is different, in some city conditions, the ride can be very choppy and not what typical Lexus buyers would expect. The upside is that open road driving is much more sure-footed

Lexus SUV is a best seller and dynamic. When the RX is thrown off-centre the top heavy nature of the RX shows its head; the centre of gravity feels much higher than some of the other sporty models in this class. Verdict The RX350 is the best seller in the Lexus line for good reason. It offers the same interior space as a mid-sized sedan but sits higher for greater outward

viability, comes standard with all-wheel drive and has a high resale value. The RX 350 F-Sport takes all the goodness of the regular RX and makes it a bit more aggressive, especially in the acceleration front. Potential buyers would be well advised to drive both the regular model and this sportier version to see if you can live with the choppy ride, it really is dramatic.

Outlaws to host Cyclone Taylor Cup

MISSION ROADRUNNERS

SCRAP DRIVE We Need Your Support To Raise

Dan KINVIG MISSION RECORD

The Mission City Outlaws have been awarded hosting rights for the 2015 Cyclone Taylor Cup, which figures to be a huge boon to the local junior B hockey club. The Cyclone Taylor Cup is the provincial junior B hockey championship, bringing together the winners of the Pacific Junior Hockey League (PJHL), the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL), and the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL), in addition to the

$10,000! We will be accepting all types of scrap metal donations from BBQ’s, Lawn Chairs, Cars and Equipment to raise money for the Mission Senior Secondary Football Program, which is a 100% nonprofit program. There are a couple of drop off locations in Mission, as well as pickups on Saturdays. rate sponsorship, or just being a fan.” Veitch believes the organizing committee will benefit from Mission’s recent experience hosting major events, including the 2014 BC Winter Games, which involved nearly 2,000 volunteers. He also believes the Cyclone Taylor Cup will benefit the Outlaws on the ice – both in terms of motivating returnees, and recruiting new talent. “Playing in the Cyclone Taylor Cup is a carrot for anybody we want to

bring in,” he said. The Outlaws’ 2013-14 season recently came to an end in the first round of the PJHL playoffs. Facing the Harold Brittain Conference-leading Aldergrove Kodiaks, Mission was swept in four straight games. Veitch acknowledged that the Kodiaks are a tough team, but noted his squad was hamstrung by two-game suspensions to top-line forwards David McGowan and Cameron Bertsch. Both were banned after being whistled for head contact on hits.

Luyken leads Cascades to nationals

hank You T , n io s is M upport! For Your S

Mission Secondary grad Aieisha Luyken is making the most of her final season of eligibility with UFV women’s basketball team. Luyken, a fifth-year point guard, was named a Canada West second team all-star last week

after averaging 10.7 points per game and notching a team-high 90 assists during the 201314 regular season. She followed that up by leading the UFV Cascades to an upset victory over the Alberta Pandas in the Canada West

semifinals last Friday in Edmonton. Luyken racked up 29 points, accounting for almost half of the Cascades’ scoring in a 66-56 victory, which clinched the program’s second consecutive berth to the CIS national championship.

DID YOU KNOW...? ON AVERAGE, YOUR BRAKE FLUID SHOULD BE FLUSHED AND REPLACED EVERY 36 MONTHS

Public Safety Notice – Winter recreationalists and snowmobilers

BRAKE FLUID FLUSH

Winter recreationalists and snowmobilers should be aware that construction of the Interior to Lower Mainland (ILM) Transmission Line continues. On-site activities include clearing of the right-of-way; construction of access roads and tower foundations; and tower assembly and erection.

Corrosion is the #1 cause of brake component failure. Corrosion can pit the metal bores of the master cylinder, and ABS components. Just like engine oil, coolant and transmission fluid, brake fluid “wears” over time. Not only does brake fluid wear, but the internal brake components also wear, producing “slude”. This leaves the brake system vulnerable to corrosion and compromise.

94

SPRING BREAK SPECIAL

The ILM right-of-way continues to be a construction zone with restricted access. Restricted access is required for worker and public safety to avoid risks associated with such things as guy lines, partially constructed foundations, construction materials, or other potential hazards that may be hidden or partially hidden by the snow.

Diane McLennan passed away at Surrey Memorial Hospital in the evening on February 23, 2014. She was a loving, compassionate, creative woman and was well known for being young in spirit.
