Abbotsford golfer Adam Hadwin staged a major breakthrough in Santiago, Chile on Sunday, earning his first career victory on the Web.com Tour. Hadwin had taken a one-stroke lead into the final round at the Chile Open, but found himself one stroke back of Australian Alistair Presnell as he headed to the 17th tee. The 26-year-old Robert Bateman Secondary grad came through in the clutch, though, birdying the last two holes to seize the victory and a $117,000 US payday. “It’s amazing,” Hadwin told the Web.com Tour website. “I battled all day and to finish birdie-birdie and make the putts I did on the last two holes gives me so much confidence. I couldn’t be happier right now.” The Chile Open is just the second event of the Web.com Tour season, but the win is a major step for Hadwin in his quest to earn a PGA Tour card for 2015. Well, lookie here. One minute you have a perfectly good Blue Box recycling program. The next, something new and rather questionable is being put in its place. And they thought they’d get away with it right under your nose, without telling you or asking your opinion. That’s deﬁnitely not democracy in action. The BC Government, elected by us to represent our best interests, has decided to ofﬂoad the costs of recycling to big multi-national corporations. To implement this new plan, they’ve set up an association that doesn’t really seem to hold the environment, local jobs, or the municipalities that run the Blue Box program, close to its heart.

Perhaps that’s why some of our local elected ofﬁcials are using the word “scam” to describe how the new program is being set up. It’s also perhaps why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to jump on board. That’s gotta tell you something. Now it’s your turn to let Premier Christy Clark know what you think. Contact her today to say that dismantling an already-working recycling program to replace it with something that few people think will be as good, is a bad idea.

Christmas movie shot downtown The Christmas Secret TV movie is filming in downtown Abbotsford this week. Film crews will be working inside local stores on Montrose Avenue from March 10-12, while exterior shots will be filmed March 13 in front of the Spruce Collective on Montrose Avenue. The street and businesses will be decorated with Christmas decorations beginning on March 12. The film will feature Bethany Joy Lenz from One Tree Hill and John Reardon from Arctic Air. The film chronicles how after a struggling young single mother saves the life of an elderly woman, she sets into motion a series of events that will test her strength, loyalty, and determination, all the while setting her on the path to finding true love. Christine Eisley is the mother of seven-year-old Zach and fiveyear-old Haley. Her ex-husband provides little, if any, child support and makes life difficult for Christine by using the children as pawns. She works long hours as a waitress to make ends meet, but her job is in jeopardy because she’s often late to work due to the unreliable teenaged sitters she’s forced to use. When Christine saves the life of a woman who works in Wilson’s department store, the shop owner wants to find her, to thank her, but Christine has disappeared, losing another job once again. He sets his grandson, Jason, to the task of finding the mysterious “Christy.” Jason, an accountant by trade who has lost his job to downsizing, thinks he is above working at Wilson’s, but soon discovers this new task gives him more than he anticipated.

Since its first class in January 2013, GDS gave global matters a local perspective — learning about inequality in Canada and abroad, and what it means for us here in the Fraser Valley. “In fact, some of the most important aspects of this degree includes changing attitudes, lifestyles and politics in Canada for the development of global citizens, wherever they decide to live and work,” says program cochair Garry Fehr. Not only does UFV’s GDS program train students for the growing international development sector and work abroad for the private sector,

it also prepares people for the changing Canadian demographic. By 2035, immigration will account for 90% of population change in Canada, requiring more immigration service workers, and more citizens who have a broader understanding of international issues, as increasingly their neighbours and coworkers will be recent immigrants. To provide real-world experience heading forward, the GDS program provides international internships in East Africa, Mexico, and India, with other opportunities on the horizon — opening doors to careers with non-governmental organizations or non-profit organizations ranging from Amnesty International to the Mennonite Central Committee, Right to Play, and the Red Cross. skills and experiences help when working for all levels of government. UFV student Matt Dirks accumulated credits that eventually shaped the GDS curriculum, allowing him to graduate with the degree not long after it was announced. Over the course of his studies, Dirks travelled to England and New York in addition to a threemonth internship in Tanzania. Those experiences, in addition to class studies, helped evolve his

understanding of global political, economic, and environmental systems. “It didn’t stir my drink to take the same type of courses for the length of a program. As another new addition to UFV’s stable of degrees, economics is a great way to study human behaviour, explains department head Sean Parkinson. “If you like making decisions or solving problems, you should study economics. It is

Businesses battle recycling fees

Groups urge province to pause plan for containers, paper Jeff NAGEL Black Press

An alliance of business groups opposed to the new Multi-Material BC (MMBC) recycling system are demanding the province halt the planned May 19 launch and go back to the drawing board. MMBC, an industry stewardship group, is poised to take responsibility for curbside blue box collection – with more containers and material types collected than before – while charging businesses for the recycling of the packaging and paper they generate. But it’s been in a bitter fight with small business groups that complain they face punishingly high fees, which will then be passed on to consumers. The battle took a new turn Monday, when the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) and eight other associations launched a campaign in B.C. news-

papers and online at rethinkitbc.ca to amplify the pressure on Victoria. CFIB provincial affairs director Mike Klassen predicted job losses and some business closures as a result of the MMBC regulations and fees. B.C. Agriculture Council vice-chair Stan Vander Waal said farmers can’t readily stop packaging strawberries and blueberries in plastic clamshells, because retailers insist that’s what consumers want. “We have to wear the cost,” he said, adding MMBC fees will cost his Chilliwack farm $60,000 to $100,000 a year. “It goes directly against growing agriculture.” Canadian Newspaper Association chairman Peter Kvarnstrom, who is publisher of a paper in Sechelt, warned the new system will be “catastrophic” to B.C. community and daily newspapers, resulting in job losses in an already challenged industry and reduced service to com-

munities. The opposition groups say they support the aim of the program – to make generators of packaging pay to recycle it – but they dispute the fees and say multinational consumer goods firms like Unilever and Walmart control MMBC and are manipulating it to their benefit, not that of local businesses. Most of the fees for container waste are double or even quadruple what businesses in Ontario pay to a similar agency. Newspapers say they face a $14-million-ayear bite out of their operations because of the 20 cents per kilogram they will pay on newsprint, compared to less than half a penny in Ontario. They contend a high proportion of newsprint is already recycled in B.C. through blue boxes. Kvarnstrom said newspapers are considering options to create their own newsprint

collection system – a move that could also deprive MMBC of newsprint revenue and undermine the program’s viability. MMBC managing director Allen Langdon said MMBC’s higher fees are because they fully finance the program and ensure service for multifamily apartments and rural depots, in contrast to Ontario’s more limited focus on singlefamily homes. He said B.C.’s successful container deposit system also means there’s less recyclable material left here for container stewards to collect and sell, so fees have to be higher to cover the system costs. Langdon said no business is forced to join MMBC, adding groups like the newspaper industry are free to develop their own system. Critics say new recycling costs imposed by MMBC will ultimately hit consumers through related fee hikes.

Abbotsford will not join the first wave of municipalities to allow Multi-Material BC (MMBC) to take over recycling collection. Council decided Monday to opt out of allowing the industryformed organization to collect recyclables in Abbotsford, which is currently achieving high levels of waste diversion with its city-run program. The city will wait and see how the program rolls out provincially before potentially joining in 2015. Coun. Patricia Ross said she currently has concerns, and sees participation now as “a huge risk.” “It’s not business- or community-friendly. It’s very difficult for community newspapers in particular. They are struggling with this legislation.” She said a major flaw is the program claims to be about reducing packaging, but there are no direct incentives outlined which will accomplish that.

Rethink recycling program The provincial push for a producer-pay recycling system is based on the concept of charging manufacturers whose products contribute to the waste stream, such as plastic packaging. But the soon to become governmentmandated program is going to penalize some unfairly, including citizens. For instance, it will hit the newspaper industry with a 20 cent per kilogram cost for its “packaging” – the very paper the newspapers are printed on. That vested interest aside, it’s debatable whether the new system will achieve its environmental goals, while simultaneously driving up costs for consumers. Although the MMBC collection system may have benefits for communities that currently do not have adequate curbside recycling programs, it is not needed in Abbotsford, where the city has been achieving high rates of waste diversion through its own recycling and compost collection. Consequently, this city will hold out on

joining MMBC for the time being – and that comes at a cost, since MMBC will provide no subsidy for communities whose programs don’t conform to their standards. Maintaining Abbotsford’s current program is good for the environment, and residents who receive curbside pickup of glass containers and other recyclables that MMBC would not collect. Local consumers will effectively pay the cost of recycling twice, as producers build the price of the MMBC program into their products, and taxpayers foot the bill for curbside pickup. Though MMBC recently provided exemptions for small businesses, it will also negatively impact local economic engines such as berry farming, where consumer preference drives the use of plastic clamshell containers for retail sales – dumping the cost onto farmers, and ultimately, customers. This is a program that needs to be put on hold and reconsidered in its entirety.

Other Hand It began with the clocks moving ahead, and the chorus of pond frogs breaking the night silence. Spring, finally, seems to have sprung although its official start is about 10 days away. Even with the snow of a week ago, the couple of remnant crocus that burst through the lawn briefly are struggling to life. How they have survived over more than a quarter century of lawn mowings and dog tramplings is as incredible as their determined desire to reproduce. The blooms are now gone, their stalks soon to be eliminated by the inevitable need to keep lawn from turning to pasture. What appears on that grass with con-

siderable more frequency than the crocus blooms are the myriad dog droppings that, discouraged by winter snow and incessant downpours, have lay dormant until now like bulbs in the ground. Spring cleanup is not always pretty, particularly when some of it is later discovered transferred from gumboot to gas pedal, the ‘earthy’ aroma exacerbated by the truck’s heater. A bristle brush rather than a scoop shovel then becomes the preferred, though unpleasant, tool of choice. Other calamities surface when the demand to tidy the yard is of the essence. The lawn tractor battery requiring a jump, its terminals from months of repose so corroded they must be scraped and polished, the bolts holding the connections rusted solid. I now have an ugly cavern in my thumb thanks to something sharp under the engine hood. But swearing aside, these warm and late afternoons have been long awaited and even the task of constant lawn mowing is looked forward to, as is the

need to put only one last load of hay in the barn before the pasture grass provides relief from feeding effort. The pumphouse heater no longer contributes to the hydro bill and the outdoor taps, no longer (I’ve got my fingers crossed) at risk of freezing, are all

the beauty it brings, it is saddening that so many have not lived to enjoy it at least one more time. I have been to far too many ‘celebrations of life’ this year. Granted, many of my friends and acquaintances are of the age when the sand is mostly in the bottom of the hourglass. Yet in a few days I will be attending the acknowledgement of the tragic passage of a man not quite 40, knowing that cancer deprived his child of the love and participation of an integral part of her life. Cancer is a vicious and determined plague, recurring without warning in its unrelenting attack on a body, no matter how young or old, fit or infirm. Like the crocus bulbs on my front lawn, cancer lies in wait until its ‘spring’ causes it to burst forth, its blooms foretelling potential doom rather than the delight of rebirth. Homeless issue is not new in this city There has been much talk in the news of late in regards to the homeless problem in Abbotsford, and it seems like everyone thinks this a newer problem for this town. Some will tell you that the homeless population explosion in Abbotsford is tied to the closure of Riverview; some say itâ€™s because police in other jurisdictions drive their problem homeless

people out to the Valley, but I believe it is neither. Â Â I moved to Abbotsford as a 13-yearold in May of 1981 and two things I noticed right away were: There were alot of churches, and I saw my first homeless person. Anyone who has lived in Abbotsford since the early â€™80s will remember Beer Bottle Bill, a classic case of mental ill-

ness, and he was not the only one in this town back then that was not getting the help they needed. First it was Jubilee Park that was the issue back in the â€™80s with homeless and drug dealers using the park. Fatkin wins market manager of the year The manager of the Abbotsford Farm and Country Market has been named the Market Manager of the Year by the B.C. Association of Farmers Markets (BCAFM). Bruce Fatkin was among 10 nominees for the award’s inaugural year. Fatkin was born and raised in Abbotsford, and has a small-business ownership background in agriculture, project management and start-up consulting. He is in his 10th year of managing the Abbotsford Farm and Country Market, and for one year also managed the Langley Community Farmers Market. Fatkin also sits on the board of directors for organizations including BCAFM.

Teams wanted for Mind Grind The Abbotsford Mission Recycling Program is planning to host the Environmental Mind Grind contest for Abbotsford and Mission high school students on Saturday, May 3. Gallery 7 presents The Hiding Place starting March 14 Gallery 7 Theatre presents its latest production, The Hiding Place, starting March 14 at MEI Auditorium (4081 Clearbrook Rd.). The Hiding Place, adapted by Timothy Gregory from the book by Corrie ten Boom with John and Elizabeth Sherrill, tells of ten Boom’s post-war mission to bring healing and forgiveness to victims of the holocaust, and how her mission reaches a crisis point when she faces the man who turned her and her family in to the Nazi police during the war. What follows is a recounting of the ten Booms’ work with the Dutch underground to hide Jews in a hidden room above the family’s watch repair shop and their subsequent internment in a concentration camp. Wrestling with her own emotional scars, ten Boom must come to terms with her need to forgive in this grim yet beautiful story that celebrates faith, mercy and courage. Gallery 7 Theatre’s production, which will be the Canadian premiere of Timothy Gregory’s adaption, features 23 performers from across the Fraser Valley and is the largest cast ever assembled in the company’s 23-year history. Playing the role of Corrie ten Boom is Carol Heynen, while her sister Betsie is played by Shelley Picard and her father, Casper, is played by Glen Pinchin. Grocery chain wins business award One of the Lower Mainland’s bestknown South Asian food grocery store chains has scooped a prize at the Small Business BC Awards (SBBC). WRSFV fundraiser March 15 A real women fashion show and fundraiser on March 15 will help raise money to provide skin care supplies to the Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley. Rachel, who turns 12 on March 21, has been studying ballet since she was four years old and has competed as a soloist since she was six. She currently trains at Dynamic Dance in Abbotsford. Rachel has achieved a mark of distinction on all her Royal Academy of Dance ballet exams. She attended the Goh Ballet’s junior summer program in 2011, the senior program in 2012 and the Alberta Ballet’s junior program last year. She also danced as a “party boy” in the 2011 Goh Ballet’s presentation of the Nutcracker and was a “party girl” and “small angel” in the 2012 production. Rachel currently spends 7.5 out of her 13.5 hours of dance per week on ballet and also helps out in the fouryear-old ballet class on Saturday mornings.

The University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team is at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national championship in Windsor, Ont. this week, hot on the heels of their bestever result at the Canada West Final Four. The Cascades punched their ticket to nationals in impressive fashion last Friday, upsetting the Final Four host Alberta Pandas 66-56 in the conference semifinals in Edmonton. UFV got a tremendous performance from fifth-year point guard Aieisha Luyken, who accounted for nearly half of the Cascades’ offensive output with 29 points. Head coach Al Tuchscherer had seen Luyken’s outburst brewing all day. “She was super-focused . . . and I was kind of watching her – is this a good thing or a bad thing?” Tuchscherer recounted. “She was really internal. I’ve seen Aieisha like that before, and we’ve tried to get her out of that mode, because her team-

Prior to the title game at the B.C. Grade 8 girls basketball championship at Pitt Meadows Secondary on Saturday, W.A. Fraser Falcons coach Chris Harvey was approached by members of the tournament all-star committee with an unusual request. They were seeking guidance from Harvey because the Falcons' roster is so deep and balanced, they were having trouble discerning which players were the standouts. Harvey took it as a compliment, and his team went on to defeat Sullivan Heights 42-39 to claim the program's first provincial title. "It was really a team effort throughout the entire tournament," Harvey said. "It's not just one girl who stands out. This team is balanced from top to bottom." Fraser fell behind 25-17 in the third quarter, but put together a 22-6 run to go up 39-31. They weathered a barrage of three-pointers from Sullivan Heights and hung on to win. The W.J. Mouat Hawks finished just off the podium at AAA girls basketball provincials, dropping an 84-71 decision to the Holy Cross Crusaders in the bronze medal game at the Langley Events Centre on Saturday. The Crusaders were absolutely on fire offensively, hitting 57.4 per cent of their attempts from the field, and they also outrebounded the Hawks by a 41-29 margin. Mouat got 21 points from Penielle M'Bikata, and double-digit scoring performances from twin sisters Cierra and Alicia Roufosse (17 and 16 points, respectively) and Amanda Thompson (15 points). Alicia Roufosse earned second team tournament all-star honours, while Cierra was an honourable mention. The Hawks had fallen 89-58 to eventual champion Brookswood in the semis on Friday, and while a championship wasn't in the cards for them this year, advancing to the Final Four is remarkable considering 11 of their 12 roster players are in Grade 11. The Columbia Bible College Bearcats dealt with more than their share of adversity at the Canadian college men’s volleyball national championship in Moose Jaw, Sask. last week, but they battled through it and came within a whisker of a podium finish. After knocking off the Humber Hawks in the quarter-finals on Thursday, the Bearcats faced the topseeded Red Deer Kings in the semis on Friday. CBC won the first set and were ahead in the second when star setter Jason Warkentin crashed into the referee’s stand and sprained his ankle. Warkentin somehow managed to finish the game, but the Kings took over at that point and won in four sets. That left the ’Cats in a situation where they had to win two games on Saturday to secure a bronze medal,

With Jeremy Lieuwen shifting from his usual libero position to take over setting duties, CBC knocked off their PacWest conference rival Douglas Royals in four sets. Head coach Phil Wiens noted his squad was disappointed in the result, but he lauded the way they responded in Warkentin’s absence. “We were just so proud of how the guys battled,” he said. “It would have been easy to give up.” The Bearcats’ Will Quiring and Brendan Folkerts were named second team tourney all-stars, and CBC took home the fair play award. Brett Olson can tend to fly under the radar in terms of his contributions to the Abbotsford Heat. He doesn’t boast the blue-chip prospect pedigree of a Sven Baertschi, a Markus Granlund or a Max Reinhart. He doesn’t score at a point-per-game pace like fellow 26-year-olds Ben Street or Blair Jones – his offensive numbers (11 goals and 25 assists in 60 games) are good, but not jaw-dropping. And unlike all of the aforementioned players, he doesn’t have an NHL contract – he attended Heat training camp in the fall of 2012 on a tryout basis and has played his way into AHL contracts each of the last two seasons. But when head coach Troy Ward looks down his bench for a forward to send out in a key situation, his gaze often settles on the versatile Olson, who can play all three forward spots with some offensive bite while maintaining a conscientious posture defensively. “He’s just a real useful tool to have,” Ward said. “He can play top six, he can play bottom six. He can play on the power play, he can play on the penalty Kill. Plus he’s a good pro – he trains hard, and he’s good off the ice. “He’s been an overachiever his whole life.” Ward is highly qualified to make that statement, as he’s been keeping tabs on Olson dating back to his junior hockey days with the Waterloo (Iowa) Black Hawks of the USHL. Ward served as a scout and advisor for the Black Hawks, who are coached by his friend P.K. O’Handley, and also helped out at several hockey camps Olson was

Olson builds consistency, doubles point production

He’s watched Olson work for everything he’s gotten in the hockey world – most significantly, overcoming a shattered hand and a torn MCL during his junior season with the NCAA’s Michigan Tech Huskies to return and lead the team in scoring as a senior. “I was never a slotted guy, knowing exactly where I was going to end up (each season),” Olson said, reflecting on his rise through the ranks. “I took a few extra years as an overager in junior before finding my way to college. Then it took me a couple years to fit in there. “Usually for me, the first year (at a new level of hockey) is a feeling-out year, a learning-curve kind of mentality. Then I just try to take what I learn from the first year and excel from there.” Olson’s AHL tenure has followed that very pattern. His graduation from Michigan Tech in 2012 coincided with the NHL lockout, which meant pro hockey jobs were scarce. Against all odds, he managed to stick with the Heat out of training camp, and had a solid start to the season, registering 10 points in his first 18 games. But while he maintained a role as a key penalty-killer and two-way presence, his point production slowed to a trickle

– he posted just eight points in 52 games the rest of the way. This season, he’s already doubled his point total (18 to 36) in 10 fewer games. And save for a 13game pointless stretch bridging December and January, he’s been an offensive threat on a night-tonight basis. “In general, he’s just been way more consistent,” Ward said. “Going through your first pro

The Heat have had a talented group up front for the bulk of the campaign, but over the last few weeks, they’ve been decimated by injuries and NHL recalls, robbing them of the likes of Granlund,

Reinhart and Baertschi. That’s thrust Olson to the forefront to an even greater extent, and he’s excelled, notching 15 points in his last 18 games. He’s been swimming against the current, though, as the depleted Heat are on an eight-game losing streak. “That type of stuff happens in the AHL – it’s a developmental league,” noted Olson, whose +10 rating is tops among players currently with the Heat. “The good thing is, there’s still time before the end of the season where we can get our group of guys back before the playoffs and get our winning edge back. “We don’t have that panicked feeling right now.” Ward believes that Olson has done enough to earn an NHL two-way contract for next season – whether an offer actually materializes, be it from the Calgary Flames or another organization, remains to be seen. Olson, for his part, isn’t about to take anything for granted, nor will he be distracted thinking about the future. “It’s something that you’re conscious about, but at the same time, it’s something that can stay in the back of your mind,” he said. “The season is what we need to focus on. “We feel we have something special here (with the Heat).”

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donna Giesbrecht after a brief battle with cancer. Donna leaves her loving husband, Randy Giesbrecht, of over thirty years, her parents, Bud and Nora Cairns of Abbotsford, her sister Dianne June (Ron) of Princeton, BC, her niece Deana Reid (Bill) of Chilliwack, niece Kelly June (Dwayne) of Princeton, great nephew Travis Reid of Chilliwack, great niece Alina Reid of Chilliwack, many friends and extended family and her dog Flash. Donna enjoyed traveling and photography and loved flowers. A celebration of life will be held at the Rancho in Abbotsford on Sunday, March 16th, at 2:00 pm GIESBRECHT Elizabeth (nee Klassen) 1926- 2014 Died peacefully on March 7, 2014 in Valhaven Rest Home. She was 87 years old. Elizabeth was born in Alberta on May 30, 1926. Elizabeth is preceeded by her parents, husband George, step-sons Elmer, Bill and daughter Kathy. She is survived by step - children; John, Dan Alvin, Irene and a brother Neil Klassen. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren and greatgreat grandchildren. Funeral Service was held on Tuesday March 11th at Church of God in Christ Mennonite at the corner of Downs and Ross Rd in Abbotsford.

Passed away February 28, 2014. Jim was born to Horace and Veda (Culp) Vosburgh on January 4, 1930 in Mission City, BC. He is predeceased by his wife, Lois (McNelly), his son, Steven, his sister Doris, and brothers Bob and Walter. He is survived by his beloved friend, Wendy Wallach and many devoted relatives and friends. Jim was well known, a lifetime resident of Mission. After graduation in 1947, he attended U.B.C. for a year. He married Lois on March 7, 1953. Steven was born on September 28, 1954. Jim co-owned a logging truck until becoming a rep for Blue Ribbon Tea Company, then ran a gravel truck business until retirement. Community interest prompted him to run for Mission Council, where he served from 1978 1987. An avid camper and fisherman, his trips to Bella Coola are legendary. Later in life, as a member of the Valley Wood Turning Club, Jim turned bowls, made beautiful cedar chests, tackle boxes and other gifts that are deeply treasured. Another passion was flying model airplanes, spending many happy hours with friends at the field. “Uncle Jim” influenced two generations of young people with his quiet, loving kindness. His legacy to us all, is the happy memories we will share forever. Memorial Service to be held Sat., March 15, 2014, at 1:00 pm at St. Andrews United Church, Mission, BC. Dr. Peter passed away peacefully at Kiwanis Care Centre in North Vancouver on March 6, 2014 in his 85th year. Born in Ituna, Saskatchewan, Peter graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1954, followed by a doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Toronto, Guelph in 1960. He had a long career in regulatory veterinary medicine, including 30 years of service as a health inspector with the Canadian Department of Agriculture. His is predeceased by his wife, Sylvia Ann, and is survived by his 4 children, Reg (Veronica), Deborah (Jerry), Mark (Marnie) and Susanne (Jan), and his 8 grandchildren. His family would like to thank the excellent team of caregivers at the Kiwanis Care Centre who were so great with him in his final years. His bright smile will be missed. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 14 at 2:00 p.m. at First Memorial Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Rd., North Vancouver.

Corol (Yurick) Vrieling passed away unexpectedly, following a short battle with congestive heart failure, into the arms of her Saviour on February 27, 2014, at the age of 88, at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. She is survived by her children, Byron Yurick, Darryle Yurick, Sheree (Allan) Hlavach with their children Laura (Bernie), Lindsay, and David; stepchildren, Dianne (Gary) Marty; Nelly (Hans) Speelman and children Anthony, Jacob, Peter, Marguerite; Bill (Carolyn) Vrieling and children Kevin and Arianna, as well as siblings Ruth (Dale) Walkey, Elizabeth Geist, and George Dinwiddy, and 11 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, John Yurick, in 1990; by her sister Rebecca Mitchell, in 1993, and by her second husband, Klaas Vrieling, in 2012. Corol was a gentle and devoted mother and Nana who will be deeply missed by her family. While raising her family, she trained and became a much-loved preschool teacher, and, in recent years, a dedicated caregiver to her husband Klaas, lovingly making it possible for him to remain at home until his final illness. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Corol’s life; a memorial service will be held Friday, March 14, 10:30 am at Gateway Community Christian Reformed Church, 2884 Abbotsford Mission Hwy, Abbotsford, with Pastor Bert Slofstra officiating.
