‘Lack of confidence’ stands Majority of council declines to rescind motion focused at mayor Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
Council’s lack of confidence in the mayor still stands. At Monday night’s council meeting Mayor Ted Adlem asked his council to reconsider a motion that was passed two weeks ago in which four councillors also disassociated themselves from any actions or statements made by the mayor unless there is a prior resolution from council. Coun. Jenny Stevens, who introduced the motion, said the move was not a per-
sonal attack on Adlem, but “a measure of desperation” to address the manner the mayor has been interacting with staff, fellow councillors, and the public. “He’s carrying out actions that don’t reflect the will of council,” said Stevens. Coun. Jeff Jewell said there was no reason to reconsider the motion, but is hoping to get on with municipal business. Jewell explained that after the Feb. 17 council meeting, he met with the Adlem to say he wants to work together until the next election. Jewell also met with Coun. Dave Hensman and Larry Nundal later in
the week and shook hands. “Every single councillor around this bench has fault,” said Hensman, who was the only one to offer an apology to the community. “I like doing municipal business, but I hate petty politics and backstabbing,” noted Nundal, who described the motion as “silly” because it has no merit. He also accused Stevens of using choice words to create alarm in the community, but was quickly interrupted by Stevens herself and protests from the public. Adlem ruled Stevens out of order and
one member of the public was asked to leave council chambers after he refused to sit down. Adlem finished off the discussion by saying, “It doesn’t surprise me that you don’t want to rescind this, and as a matter of fact, I’m happy that you don’t want to rescind it because you’ve given me some freedom.” He explained he made nine public appearances during the B.C. Winter Games in Mission and spoke on behalf of himself and the community, but not council. “It’s time to move ahead,” said Adlem.
Dog survives fatal car crash
Nugget now living with neighbour in Lake Errock Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
Against all odds, a 13-year-old shih tzu-poodle cross named Nugget was unharmed in a car crash that killed her owner and his best friend in February. Miraculously, Nugget also survived two nights near the accident scene in Deroche before she was found by neighbours who began searching for her as soon as they learned about the collision. “It was unsettling, not knowing what happened to the dog,” explained Shannon Marshall, who now has custody of Nugget. Marshall lives in a mobile home park in Lake Errock and was a neighbour to the two crash victims.
Marshall believes the two men, the 56-year-old driver and the 73-year-old passenger, were on their way to the Deroche store on the afternoon of Feb. 10 when their vehicle crashed into the ditch on the north side of the Lougheed Highway. News of their deaths spread quickly in the park, where many residents spent time together regularly and called themselves family. Marshall is certain the little white dog was on her owner’s lap at the time of the accident. “She was his pride and joy,” explained Marshall, who noted Nugget’s 73-year-

Currently, sawdust, coal and aggregate are being loaded onto barges in Mission. Dennis McKamey, who owns a chip operation, explained his company brings logs in, debarks them and puts them on barges. “Most chips have to be barged,” he said, noting his number one customer is in Howe Sound and chips cannot be trucked there. Using the river as a transportation system would decongest high-
ways and also benefit neighbouring communities, while providing jobs, offered Patrick Catherwood. “I see an opportunity to create more jobs – well-paying jobs,” said Steve Sharpe, adding the federal and provincial governments have guidelines in place to protect the environment. “It’s the responsibility of every taxpayer, whether they’re working on the river or not, to enhance the economy and create jobs,” said Wilson Seig, who noted topography maps 30 to 40 years ago show a free-flowing Fraser. Seig explained as people tried to protect habitat in the Fraser, sand-
A Mission RCMP officer suffered minor injuries when the unmarked police car he was in was hit by another vehicle fleeing from Mounties. The crash happened last Friday (Feb. 28) night at around 11 p.m. and caused about $1,000 damage to the police car. The injured officer is back at work this week, said Mission RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright. Wright said mem-
bers of the RCMP’s Street Crimes Unit saw an individual who they know was prohibited from driving, parking a 2001 Ford Focus in the area of Stave Lake Street and Seventh Avenue last week. When police approached the vehicle, the driver put the car in reverse and rammed the police car. The suspect drove through a red light at
the intersection and fled the area. The car was found in the 33300 block of 12 Avenue a short time later. An extensive search, which included help from a police dog and helicopter, failed to locate the suspect. Police have identified the suspect as 45-yearold Laine Poulson of Agassiz, and are asking for the public’s assistance in locating him.
Police will be seeking several charges against the suspect, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a peace officer and driving while disqualified. The Focus he was driving was not reported stolen and police are attempting to find the registered owner. If you see Poulson, don’t approach him, advise police. Instead,

The initiative was brought forward by Mayor Ted Adlem, who stated at the time he wanted to give businesses tools to help create good-paying jobs and improve the economy in the community. The bylaw is expected to pass at the next council meeting on March 17.

Mission is one vote away from reversing a bylaw that banned barge loading along the Fraser River in 2007. Council gave third reading approval Monday night to amend a section of the district’s industrial zoning bylaw to permit the activity following a public hearing. Most speakers – including some who had businesses along the river – were in favour of the change. A few spoke against it, citing environmental, tourism and noise concerns. The Mission area, particularly the Big Eddy near Hatzic Slough, has
been recognized as a key rearing and feeding area for juvenile white sturgeon, said Sarah Schreier, executive director of the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society. She explained that the white sturgeon population has been declining since 2005 and any more river activity could potentially decrease the riparian zone. STS Guiding owner Vic Carrao said the sport fishing industry brings in tens of millions of dollars each year to the local economy and more tug traffic on the river would create conflicts. Missing man owned Mission property Human remains identified; IHIT investigating death Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
Police have identified the human remains found along the south banks of the Fraser River on Feb.16 as belonging to Vancouver resident Barry Hinchcliffe. Hinchcliffe, 44, also owned property in Mission and was reported missing in September 2011. According to court documents filed in B.C. Supreme Court, police suspect Hinchcliffe was involved in the drug trade. He was last seen leaving his home in the 900 block of Expo Boulevard in Vancouverat about 7 p.m. on Sept. 20, 2011. He was headed to a rural property he owned in Mission on Sylvester Road. He had plans to visit his daughter and former common-law spouse in Duncan that
weekend, but didn’t show up. He was reported missing by his family seven days later. Police located his unoccupied grey 2009 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck at a Mission property, and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took over the investigation on Oct. 1. Hinchcliffe had several bank accounts and brokerage accounts which he had not accessed since Sept. 20, 2011. He was also the sole registered owner of a property in McConnell Creek located at 14708 Sylvester Rd, near Cascade Falls. The property value was estimated at $510,000 in 2012 when the Public Guardian and Trustee of B.C. petitioned the court in February 2012 to manage Hinchcliffe’s estate. A land title search shows Hinchcliffe was
the registered owner of 14708 Sylvester Road from 2005-2012. Neighbours in the area did not know Hinchcliffe. One nearby resident, who has lived on the Sylvester Road since 1976, said police had taken down a large marijuana grow operation a few of years ago on that property. Another
neighbour observed some properties in the area are owned by absentee landlords. Hinchcliffe’s remains were found Feb. 16 by a citizen who was walking along the river in an area off Walters Street in Abbotsford. IHIT spokesman Sgt. Adam MacIntosh said the case is still being investigated as a

QUESTION OF THE WEEK Do you think the ‘lack of confidence in the mayor’ motion should have been rescinded?
Transit needs to consider seniors
The last 60 years of transportation design have been about getting young, mobile people to work. Now may be the time to find a way to make transportation safer and more usable for seniors. Before, no one cared about washrooms at SkyTrain stations, truly accessible bus stops and buses or other services that would make it easier for older people to give up the car and take transit. Before, nobody worried that street lighting, signage, even our drivers’ licence system was inadequate for use by older people whose eyesight may be failing, whose reflexes are slow but who may still have a clean driving record. Before, no one cared that suburban living doesn’t support seniors, who may become isolated at home and dependent on government or volunteer services to get around. Now, though, as the grey tsunami begins to overwhelm public resources, it may be time to care. The evidence is already clear that transportation is inadequate for vul-
nerable, less mobile people. HandyDart is overwhelmed by people who need door-to-door service, so it’s time to take another look at how this service is used. Last year, for example, there were 42,418 service denials and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Is it time to take another look at how service to the most vulnerable is delivered? Yes. The evidence is also clear that our accepted driver’s licence system is inadequate for older drivers. Although most stay off the road in risky periods, studies find the crash rate for people 70 and older older is similar to the crash rate of new drivers (those ages 16 to 24). Is it time to take another look at how our driver’s licence system works? Yes. Is it time to take another look at how our transit system works for seniors? Absolutely, so we can keep our moms and dads safe, secure and healthy, and so it will be ready for us one day. – Black Press

Court decision on aboriginal title needed Tom Fletcher
B.C. Views The New Prosperity mineral deposit near Williams Lake is described by the industry as one of the largest in the world, containing 5.3 billion pounds of copper and 13.3 million ounces of gold. The Harper government’s decision to reject open-pit mine development for a second time is seen by elected officials in the Cariboo region as a disaster. One of Quesnel’s sawmills is preparing to close for good, and I’ve been told there is more to come as the post-pine beetle era unfolds. Here in the B.C. capital, the decision is mainly viewed as a huge mistake. Taseko Mines is going to court to show that the federal panel used the wrong design when reviewing the company’s expensively revised plan. The province has permitted two successful mines that operate in the same area, one of which is run by Taseko.
In Ottawa, this is a Supreme Court of Canada test case over who owns the land and the mineral wealth underneath. In traditional Canadian law, the province owns it. This was highlighted in the recent discussion between B.C. Premier Christy Clark and Alberta’s Alison Redford over royalties from oil. Six aboriginal communities make up the Tsilhqot’in Nation, which has a long and bitter history of resistance against the Crown. They almost won a declaration of title to 40,000 hectares known as the Nemiah Valley: forests, wild horses, minerals and all, in a 339-day trial that ended in 2007. Their case suffered a setback at the B.C. Court of Appeal, and is now before the highest court. Aboriginal rights have been established, but this would be the first clear title. Tsilhqot’in tribal chair Joe Alphonse was pleasantly surprised to see Taseko turned down again. He said the Tsilhqot’in National Government is releasing its own mining policies soon. “We welcome opportunities to look at projects that are environmentally sound and we need economic opportunities,” Alphonse told the Williams Lake Tribune.
Somehow efforts to move mine waste rock from Teztan Biny (Fish Lake) to a sealed storage site two kilometres away are not enough to protect groundwater, although
B.C. residents could finally see some answers this year. they are sufficient at the nearby Gibraltar and Mount Polley mines. And Alphonse makes it clear this mysterious environmental problem will be solved once he and his fellow chiefs have control of the resource. A Supreme Court of Canada ruling on aboriginal title is required to settle this. If some limited form of title is at last defined for the treaty-less majority of B.C., or at least Tsilhqot’in territory, the fate of the mine may become clear. Conventional wisdom on this is that the
mining company didn’t try hard enough to establish a working relationship with the Tsilhqot’in. For his part, Taseko CEO Russell Hallbauer says the chiefs refused to meet with him, which isn’t surprising from a group that doesn’t recognize the B.C. forests ministry either. Here’s a sample of the volume of evidence that may determine the future of B.C. Archeological studies presented at trial describe “18 roasting and/or pit depressions” at Teztan Biny. It’s not clear if these were for seasonal food preparation or for pit houses, which would indicate a more permanent settlement at the lake. Nor is it clear whether these “cultural depressions” have been identified as being of Tsilhqot’in origin. Oral histories are also uncertain. Tsilhqot’in witnesses testified that Teztan Biny has been used in the 20th century as a hunting and fishing camp. The mine was rejected due to ill-defined cultural as well as environmental concerns. B.C. residents could finally see some answers this year. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Well done with the Games, Team Mission
It started with judo, then curling, gymnastics and badminton. By the time I watched the Fraser Valley girls’ hockey team score two goals in their games first period, I was more excited than watching a Stanley Cup playoff game (especially the
ones of the last couple of years). However, it was the wheelchair basketball game that spoke to me the most. Midway through the (Zone 7) Fort St. James versus (Zone 3) Langley game, the wheelchair of Fort St. James player
MMH experience a positive one I was recently a patient at Mission Memorial Hospital and I have nothing but the highest praise for the care I received. All of the staff: doctors, nurses, dieticians, lab technicians, cleaners, and kitchen workers in both emergency and acute care showed great kindness to me throughout my stay. The food was tasty and it was served to me in a cheerful manner. Every medical staff member took the time to determine what my
needs were so that they could (and indeed did) nurture me back to good health. Every non-medical staff member played a huge role in helping me get well by their optimistic, upbeat and caring manner. I was made to feel by everyone that I did matter. I will never forget their hard work on my behalf and their kind, caring manner. Thank you so much everyone at MMH. Keep up the great work! Abby/Mission to review railroad safety Alex BUTLER
ABBOTSFORD NEWS
Abbotsford and Mission will work together to review the issue of railroad safety and the transport of danger-
ous goods through the communities. Coun. Jeff Jewell of Mission and Coun. Henry Braun of Abbotsford submitted a report to their respective
councils on Monday, suggesting the cities undertake a study to identify the exposures, estimate risk levels, and recommend any risk mitigation options

of rail transport. Though the responsibility for rail safety and regulation falls on the federal and provincial governments, the report states that municipalities have a responsibility to ensure the health and safety of their residents and to keep first responders up to date on the necessary safety protocols. The report calls for
the process to include meetings and correspondence with the operating companies involved, as well as appropriate federal and provincial regulatory bodies. Jewell told Mission council “I don’t know if we can do a whole lot. At the very least we need to learn a lot more about what the risks are and try to get the attention of
authorities and maximize safety in our community.” Braun said that he is not opposed to transporting dangerous goods, but there are increased concerns in light of recent rail accidents in North America that should be addressed. A report from Abbotsford city manager George Murray suggested that as the
issue affects a number of Fraser Valley municipalities, council may wish to contact other cities to work together, allowing them to share any potential legal fees associated with a study. It also advised the issue be to referred to city staff for additional study, specifically to the cities’ fire chiefs. Both councils supported the plan.

Roadside suspensions and vehicle seizures for drivers blowing as low as 0.05 per cent blood alcohol have helped cut B.C. drinking and driving deaths by half, Attorney General Suzanne Anton said Monday. Government statistics show average fatalities from drinking and driving have fallen to 54 a year from a previous five-year average of 112, since the law took effect in September 2010. Anton said the program is so successful that other provinces are moving
in the same direction. Anton wouldn’t comment on court challenges to the program, which imposes penalties on people who test in the “warn” range below 0.08, where they are subject to impaired driving charges. “If there have to be changes made to it, we will be making those, but the program is good, it saves lives and that’s what’s important,” Anton said. The “immediate roadside prohibition” program replaced most impaired driving charges with administrative penalties, including a three-day
driving ban and a $200 administrative fee for those who blow between 0.05 and 0.08, if the police officer has reason to believe the driver is impaired. For those who blow in the “impaired” range of 0.08 or higher, police have the option of imposing a 90-day driving ban, a $500 penalty and impounding the vehicle for 30 days instead of laying a charge. Towing and impounding a vehicle can result in a $700 bill, and a $1,400 mandatory “responsible driver program” may also be required before the driver’s licence is

returned. The government terms the measure “Alexa’s Law,” after four-year-old Alexa Middelaer, who was feeding horses at the roadside in Delta when she was struck by an impaired driver and killed in 2008. “After decades of stagnant progress on reducing the number of preventable deaths caused by drinking and driving, as a community we’ve made significant and sustained changes,” said Laurel Middelaer, Alexa’s mother, who has been an advocate on the issue since the tragedy.

Amateur cook rises above three chefs to win contest Mission business owner on top of the Chopping Block Vikki HOPES ABBOTSFORD NEWS
Debbie Calicetto of Abbotsford has always enjoyed cooking meals for her friends and family and loves trying out new recipes. She is a volunteer youth care worker at Cyrus Centre for at-risk youth in Abbotsford where she also cooks meals, challenging herself to come up with creative dishes using donated food. Despite having no formal training as a cook or chef, Calicetto entered a recent cooking competition – and won. The Chopping Block contest followed the same format as the popular Chopped TV show, and the head judge was Vikram Vij from Top Chef Canada and Chopped Canada. The two other judges were Clinton Herman, a host of the radio morning show The Peak, and Ryan McDonald, executive chef at Urban Fare. The event took place Feb. 22 during the BC Home and Garden Show at BC Place. Calicetto, who is also a dance teacher and owner of Can Dance Studio in Mission,
applied as a contestant by submitting her story about how she cooks meals for Cyrus Centre. A few weeks later, she found out she had been accepted and was invited to go up against three others in front of a live audience. Calicetto’s three competitors were a full-time caterer and food stylist for TV, film and magazine; a chef who works at his mom’s restaurant; and a chef who owns his own restaurant. The challenge involved three 20-minute rounds, with each contestant being presented with a black box of ingredients at the start of each round.
One contestant was eliminated at the end of each level. In the first round, the four competitors were required to make an appetizer using kale, coconut cream, ginger beer, maple syrup and kangaroo meat. Calicetto prepared an Indian curry soup. “I was told I was very brave to cook curry as I was presenting my dish to the top Indian chef in Canada. But I made it to round two, and Vikram Vij loved my dish,” she said. In round two, the three remaining contestants were required to make an entree using eggplant, beets, wasabi horseradish, cinnamon honey and a
wild salmon. Calicetto made a nut-crusted salmon on braised eggplants and beets cut into different-sized squares. She advanced to the final round – dessert – against one other competitor, and their ingredients were cherry soda, cinnamon honey, chocolate apples and pistachios. Her creation was a soda crust apple pie with a salted caramel chocolate sauce and pistachio cream. Calicetto said she

SUBMITED PHOTO could not believe it when she was named the Chopping Block champion. “I started to cry. I was a dance teacher and I just beat out three top chefs,” she said of her
reaction to the win. Her prizes include a helicopter tour over Vancouver for four, with a stop on top of the Hyatt Regency and a private meal cooked in the penthouse suite
by the executive chef. She also won a large gift basket of food and kitchen items, and all the leftover food from the competition was donated to Cyrus Centre.

Breaking ground for observatory Fundraising efforts continue to equip facility Carol Aun
Mission’s Sunrise Rotary Club kicked off fundraising efforts for the project with a $20,000 donation, which was matched by the Mission Heritage Association, and the provincial government added $100,000 grant last April to get the project underway. There is $140,000, as well as commitments from volunteers, to construct the building, but another $150,000 needs to be raised to equip it, said Brian
MISSION RECORD
Ground will be broken this Saturday (March 8) for Mission’s Rotary Observatory and Space Science Centre at Fraser River Heritage Park. The event begins at 10 a.m. The 2,100-foot square building will have a flat top and a dome on one side for astronomy fans to watch nightly movements in the sky or daily activities of the sun.
Antonson, a member of the Fraser Valley Astronomers Society (FVAS) who is a leader in the project. He plans to equip the facility with a prime telescope at least 20 inches in diameter, which would put the facility at a university class suitable for instruction and research. “The bigger the mirror, the more light there is (to see the night sky),” said Antonson. There will also be
smaller telescopes and a solar unit for the daytime. Visitors are also encouraged to bring their own equipment. The facility can be used year-round, said Antonson, who hopes the building will be finished in the summer. An opening date has not been determined as fundraising efforts are still ongoing. To contribute to the observatory, or for more information, call the park office at 604826-0277.

BRAKE FLUID FLUSH Corrosion is the #1 cause of brake component failure. Corrosion can pit the metal bores of the master cylinder, and ABS components. Just like engine oil, coolant and transmission fluid, brake fluid “wears” over time. Not only does brake fluid wear, but the internal brake components also wear, producing “slude”. This leaves the brake system vulnerable to corrosion and compromise.

Fefe Dobson will be performing at the Clarke Theatre on April 3. Dobson, a singer, songwriter and actress, has carved a new lane for herself, breaking down barriers within the music industry as a Canadian female musician of a mixed background. She has also empowered other female artists along the way. Her playfully aggressive sound comes through loud and clear on such tracks as the platinum singles Ghost and Stuttering. Her 2010 album, Joy, debuted to critical acclaim, winning several awards, includ-
ing a Canadian Radio Music Award and a Much Music Video Award. With a career spanning more than 10 years, Dobson is able to reinvent herself with each new musical adventure. She will be joined on the Clarke Theatre stage by special guest Courage My Love, a power trio that grew up on pop-pink and alternative metal. The concert is being presented by Rock. Welcome to the driver’s seat
The new GLA is a practical small SUV perfect for young families or couples that want the same underlying goodness that is in the CLA but with standard all wheel drive and ease of use. Zack Spencer
Luxury wheels at just the light price MALAGA, SPAIN - It might be winter here but it’s always nice to look forward to warmer days, filled with sun and clear roads. To get a sneak peek at what better weather looks and feels like, plus get a chance to drive the all new Mercedes GLA250 and GLA 45 AMG, the advanced drive program was held in Malaga, Spain. The GLA is built of the same platform as the hot, new CLA sedan that arrived last fall. Developing it into a taller, more practical small SUV is perfect for young families or couples that want the same underlying goodness that is in the CLA but with standard all wheel drive (AWD) and ease of use. Pricing has not been confirmed but when it arrives this fall, expect the same aggressive pricing that the CLA delivers. That car starts at $33,900 but with AWD comes up to $36,800. Looks This new GLA is not as tall as the B-Class, which also shares the same platform, and not nearly as low-slung as the CLA. The GLA has a less aggressive front grille

Drive The base GLA 250 comes with a 2.0L turbocharged direct injection 4-cylinder with a healthy 208hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, the same as the B-Class and base CLA. There is plenty of acceleration and cruising on the highway is effortless.
CANADA’S FAVORITE MID-SIZED CAR IS HERE!
2014 CAMRY
Driving through the mountain canyons back from Granada to Malaga was a real treat. The countryside is rustic and beautiful and the twisty roads sublime. The base GLA never set a wheel wrong and the 7-speed duel-clutch automatic can be left in economy, sport or manual for each driving situation. All GLA models come with standard AWD and this system can detach the rear wheels and drive in FWD for better economy but switches seamlessly back when more traction or cornering capability is required, plus Dynamic Cornering Assist applies just a small amount of brake force to the inside wheel when cornering to aid in the process. The 45 AMG takes things to a completely new level. The 2.0L 4-cylinder is hand assembled and pumps out a whopping 355hp and 332 lb.-ft. of torque. The 7-speed transmission and AWD system have been adapted by AMG to deliver a go-cart like drive that is so reassuring and potent that it makes the driver look and feel fantastic. Cornering is effortless and the bigger wheels and lowered suspension give great feedback but it is not jarring. Verdict Mercedes Benz is enabling more people to access its brand with smaller less expensive vehicles. The new GLA 250 and GLA 45 AMG are certainly very attractive, powerful and fun vehicles to drive. The Lowdown Power: 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder with 208hp or 355hp Fill-up: N/A Sticker price: N/A

It is pouring with rain so the car drops you off at the supermarket entrance and heads off on its own to find a parking spot way the heck and yonder at the other end of the mall. When you have finished your Big Shop for the week, it is still raining cats, dogs and frogs so you hit the button on the key fob. The car returns from wherever it was and you load up with nary a drop of the wet stuff falling on your head. Futuristic fantasy? Well, getting your hands on the key fob to an autonomous drive car may mean a wait until 2020 when Nissan plans to begin selling that feature in multiple vehicles. However, a car capable of doing the task described in a driverless mode is here in the now. Nissan granted yours truly the opportunity recently to take a spin in a driverless electric-powered LEAF. Actually, the word spin doesn’t truly describe what was a very smooth and controlled ride around a course loaded with obstacles, traffic lights turning red, cars changing lanes unexpectedly and automated pedestrians wandering out in front
Change your tires according to the conditions you are driving in the most.
of us – if ‘me’ and the car counts as an ‘us’. The LEAF looked like any normal edition but was loaded with 360-degree cameras, laser scanners, radar and other ‘electrickery’, as a TV character called Catweazle once described the workings of a light bulb. I felt like that character from my childhood, who incidentally was a caveman hurled through time into the 1960s. The car pulled away smoothly, stopped at those red lights and signalled turns, a sequence of manouevres rarely witnessed on our roads when there are humans
at the wheel. It slowed when a car driven by a human changed lanes ahead of us on the off-road circuit. I would have hit the phoney ped that bounded out from the curb but not this ghost driver that took instantaneous evasive action. My drive was on an airport-based circuit away from the real world, while over in Japan Nissan has conducted some demonstrations on freeways. By the end of this year, a dedicated track featuring real townscapes – masonry, not model buildings will be ready. It will enable testers to push the vehicles impossible to carry out on public roads to
ensure the technology is safe. When the car is available for real world driving, a combination of GPS navigation and a tablet-style screen will enable the non-driving driver to direct the car to work, home, play or park with precision. You will be able to drive your favourite routes and it will map and record the preferences for future trips. The mock supermarket shopping demo was the most enjoyable part of my experience because driving around full parking lots looking for a space is not my favourite pastime. That said, I’m not thrilled at the thought of fun being removed from my daily driving. I like the use of technologies to avoid crashes but I can’t foresee a time when I would want to commit to fully-autonomous driving. Not because I don’t trust the technology but because I enjoy the challenges thrown up on my daily drive. And I have this fear that many will allow their skills to diminish and just relying on technology to get them out of trouble. Do you agree or am I a caveman like Catweazle? keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

It happened just after the last flood. The T winter beat records for snowfall, and springtime saw serious seriou flooding. Basements filled, streets were running with water, and cars were left to float and sink. One day, I walked past a junk yard and saw, what I thought, was a rrelatively normal car.
the vehicle could get a person from A to B. Suddenly, I had an idea. Since the car looked fine on the outside, no one had to know its real history. I was a genius. After a night in the garage with a heater and a little scrubbing, I posted an ad on Craigslist: “2004 black Toyota Corolla for sale. No longer need, bought new car. No room in garage – need to sell ASAP!!! Few scratches, otherwise in great condition. Call cell and we’ll talk price.” Thirty minutes later I got a call from a sixteen-year old kid – a little younger than my son. We decided to meet at the local mall at about 6:00. I wonder if his parents knew what he was up to. I arrived at 6:20, telling him I was in a great rush as I had to pick my son up from soccer practice. Turns out he played, too. After some soccer gossip, we got down to business. I knew that a kid his age just wanted a ride to show off to his friends, so we spent little time on the details. I told him the car was in perfect condition and was never in any accidents. “No problems as far as I know,” I said. The kid was sold. He trusted me. I never gave him my full name, and he never gave me his. He gave me the cash, I gave him the car. All was good. I was on my way. A few days later, I saw a TV program that talked about flood damaged vehicles. Apparently, flooding can damage the computer systems, which control things like the brakes and steering. And flood vehicles can’t be registered or insured. Who knew? My mind immediately went to the kid I sold the vehicle to. I felt a twinge of guilt. Then my eyes darted to my stash of cash. Two weeks later, I had another car up for sale. Stay tuned!
I still remember r rs time. It was my first eas So thrilling. so easy. And I walked away with a couple of thousa bucks in thousand pocket my pocket. Ten top trucks to get the job done What are my favourite trucks? It’s a question readers ask me all the time in the supermarket and on the street. Though not in order of preference, here are my ten choices. 2014 GMC/Chevy Silverado/Sierra ½ ton pickup has gone through some monumental changes this year. What an improvement with a very comfortable and refined interior on all trim levels, and three engine choices, the Eco Tec 4.3-litre V6, 5.3-litre V8, and a 6.2-litre V8. 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. Very similar in design to its big brother the Silverado, this mid-size truck fills a void in Canada. Still expected to work as hard as a full-size truck, the Colorado can tow more than 3,039 kilograms (6700 lbs). A 2.5L I-4 engine is standard with an optional 3.6L V6 with a six-speed automatic transmission. 2015 GMC 3500HD Denali is a beast. This truck is built to pull and with 10,251 KG (22,600 lbs) of trailer towing capacity it does just that. The 6.6L V8 turbo engine delivers 397 hp and 765 lb ft of torque and is paired with a 1000 series Allison transmission. With interior upgrades such as 12-way power adjust-

2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. This is a much-anticipated truck from Ram with a 3.0-litre V6 Diesel engine with a torqueflite eight-speed transmission. Not only will the Ram EcoDiesel give you 420-pound feet of torque and plenty of towing capabilities, it will also reduce co2 emissions and run on B20 Biodiesel. 2014 Ram 3500. The largest and most capable pickup Ram has to offer. Alterations to the frame including eight separate cross members, hydro formed frame rails and
high strength steel add up to a truck that is capable of towing up to 13,607kg (30,000lb). A 6.7l Cummins turbo diesel engine delivers 385 hp and 850 lb ft of torque. 2014 Toyota Tundra. New body style this year. The western themed 1794 edition commemorates the founding year of a Texas ranch where the Tundra plant is situated. This interior is covered with Saddle tan brown leather seats and rich maple wood grain panels throughout. It is powered by a 4.6-litre or a 5.7-litre engine. Can it
compete with the big boys? This is the year to see. 2014 Toyota Tacoma. The Tacoma has continued to increase popularity and is a very agile four-wheeler. The double cab gives plenty of room and the 4.0-litre V6 engine can get you to your favorite fishing hole and back. With the addition of some modern day technology such as backup camera, heated seats, 6 airbags, and a power invertor, this truck has everything I am looking for. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

able bucket seats, heated leather wrapped steering wheel and a Bose sound system, you can operate it in comfort. 2014 Ford F150 Ecoboost: With more than 100,000 Eco Boost engines being produced monthly, you can bet a majority of these engines are finding their way into the 2014 F150 pickup. It holds the record in Canada for highest pickup sales, and at 12.9/9.0 L/100 km (city/ highway) it keeps the money in your wallet a little longer. 2014 Ford Raptor is still one of my favorite off-road vehicles. It has electronic locking rear differential, shift on the fly 4-wheel drive, advance trac with roll stability control, and trailer sway control. Front and rear mounted cameras and a 6.2-litre V8 engine to help you get up and over that hill. 2015 Ford F150. All new design features and a completely aluminum body and high strength steel in its frame make this truck up to 317 KG (700 lbs) lighter. It has 11 new class-exclusive features, including 360-degree camera view, integrated loading ramps stowed in the pickup bed, 400-watt power outlets inside the cab, LED headlights and side-view mirror spotlights, and remote tailgate release.

Going topless for under $30,000 Alexandra Straub
Perhaps it might be too early to start thinking of going topless. Then again, maybe not. Dreaming about the days when we don’t need to crank the heat to full blast in the house, or bundle up to go outside to shovel snow are warming thoughts. And so is the thought of open air driving. Here are five convertibles under $30K that might help beat the winter blahs and get you thinking about the sun. Fiat 500C - $16,495 As if the Fiat 500 wasn’t cute enough, there’s also a drop top version to give it even more character. The Pop trim has a starting price of $16,495, whereas the Lounge trim still starts under $20K at $19,895. Both come with a 1.4L, 4-cylinder MultiAir

engine, which produces 101 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque. Okay, I know that’s not an incredible amount of ponies but, hey, we’re all equal in stop-and-go traffic, right? To catch the attention of fellow commuters, the 500C comes with the option of 3 canvas top colours and 14 different exterior hues. You can even retract the roof while driving. VW Beetle Convertible - $29,075 One of the most recognizable vehicles on the road is the VW Beetle. And its convertible version offers a very similar silhouette as its coupe sibling, thus helping it be spotted easily. The latest generation of German convertible is better than ever. Boasting more trunk room (now rated at 201L as opposed to 141L) than the previous two generations, a more “masculine” look and better driving dynamics. There are two engines to choose from: a 1.8L, 4-cylinder that produces 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, and a 2.0L, 4-cylinder turbocharged (TSI) model with 200 horsepower with the manual transmission (but 210hp with the optional automatic DSG) and 207 lb-ft of torque. Mazda MX-5 - $29,250 Given the title of the world’s most popular 2-seat sports car, it’s not hard to see why. The front engine, rear-wheel drive Mazda MX-5 is a blast to drive.

Mazda MX-5.
Whether taking it out for a spin on the road or the track, this tiny two-door has nothing but good times woven into its sheet metal. The Mazda MX-5’s manual vinyl top takes only a few seconds to drop down, allowing its driver and passenger to experience a completely new world of topless driving. Under its pint-size hood is a 2.0L, 4-cylinder engine with an output of 167 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque. Mustang Convertible $29,499 Under the hood of this American muscle car, the Ford Mustang’s 3.7L, V6 engine will give you the grunt and glory of 305 horsepower. You’ll also be able to fit four people inside along with 272L of cargo around back. Despite the healthy dose of ponies under the hood, wrangling this convertible is anything but a chore. With either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, you’d be pleasantly surprised as to how gracious this ‘Stang can be to drive. MINI Convertible $29,500 There’s something to be said about driving a MINI. It’s unlike any other experience out there. It feels like driving a street-legal go-kart, but without the abrasiveness that go-karts can have. Its pristine handling and fabulous gearbox only enhance the experience. Granted, visibility out the rear with the top up isn’t fabulous, and there isn’t a lot of trunk space (but there still is room for four!), those are secondary details. Take the 121 horsepower MINI Convertible for a spin and fall in love with things that come in small packages. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

half of tickets advertised on the two big free classifieds sites are bogus. “You’re not going to get to the concert or event. You’re going to lose your money. It’s rampant.” Some sellers purport to have a receipt for the tickets, giving an impression of legitimacy, but the receipt is usually a fake as well. Better Business Bureau of Mainland B.C. president and CEO Danielle Primrose said one of the top 10 scams highlighted for this year targets Instagram users. Scammers post images on the photo-sharing app of tempting prize giveaways, purportedly from big brands and retailers. But the images link to other websites that try to get credit card information and Instagram users end up helping the scam by widely sharing. Primrose said spammers are also increasingly using fake or real gossip about celebrities like Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus to get social

Fraudsters are impersonating Canada Revenue Agency officers to target Lower Mainland residents with a new phone scam that keys on income tax season. It’s not on the list of top 10 scams for 2014 announced Friday by the Better Business Bureau because reports have just begun to surface about the unlikely sounding fraud. Scammers who claim to be federal revenue agents accuse victims of owing back taxes and warn a warrant for their arrest will be issued if they don’t pay up pronto. “They’re quite threatening and they’re quite aggressive,” Vancouver Police Det.-Const. Linda Grange said. Victims are persuaded to buy gift cards in amounts of up to $2,500 from major retailers and phone back with the activation codes. In two recent cases, the cards were for Home Depot and Safeway. Other victims sent money orders. “They’re very convincing,” Grange said. “You panic and you think there’s a warrant and all of a sudden you’re running off to the store to get a gift card.” The scam may become “quite prevalent” as the deadline to file income tax returns nears, she said. Grange said the VPD also continues to field large numbers of complaints about fraudulent ticket selling through online sites. “If you’re going to buy a ticket on Craigslist or Kijiji or any other website there’s a huge, huge chance it’s fraud,” she said, estimating over

Other scams on this year’s top 10 list include romance scams by phoney beaus on online dating websites, as well long-running problems like curbers – unlicensed car dealers selling lemons from parking lots – or lottery mail scams. Many people also continue to fall for “enterprise fee scams” where they’re persuaded they must make an upfront fee payment to unlock a larger sum of money. “Do you really need to pay money to win money? Absolutely not,” cautioned Manjit Bains of Consumer Protection B.C. For the BBB’s full list of 2014 top scams and tips on how to avoid them, see mbc.bbb. org/top-ten-scams. KLEMETS Lydia Mae
Robert John Temple “Jackel” Jan 25th 1950 - March 9th 2012
The moment that you died my heart was torn in two one side filled with heartache the other died with you. I often lie awake at night when the world is fast asleep and take a walk down memory lane with tears upon my cheeks. Your golden heart stopped beating your hardworking hands at rest, To me and so many others Daddy you truly were the best.
Two years ago you finally got to retire and everytime it snows your boys are convinced it’s you fixing God’s ice machine.
Miss you Daddy, Proud to have had you for a Dad & Best Friend.

HORACE James Vosburgh Passed away February 28, 2014. Jim was born to Horace and Veda (Culp) Vosburgh on January 4, 1930 in Mission City, BC. He is predeceased by his wife, Lois (McNelly), his son, Steven, his sister Doris, and brothers Bob and Walter. He is survived by his beloved friend, Wendy Wallach and many devoted relatives and friends. Jim was well known, a lifetime resident of Mission. After graduation in 1947, he attended U.B.C. for a year. He married Lois on March 7, 1953. Steven was born on September 28, 1954. Jim co-owned a logging truck until becoming a rep for Blue Ribbon Tea Company, then ran a gravel truck business until retirement. Community interest prompted him to run for Mission Council, where he served from 1978 1987. An avid camper and fisherman, his trips to Bella Coola are legendary. Later in life, as a member of the Valley Wood Turning Club, Jim turned bowls, made beautiful cedar chests, tackle boxes and other gifts that are deeply treasured. Another passion was flying model airplanes, spending many happy hours with friends at the field. “Uncle Jim” influenced two generations of young people with his quiet, loving kindness. His legacy to us all, is the happy memories we will share forever. Memorial Service to be held Sat., March 15, 2014, at 1:00 pm at St. Andrews United Church, Mission, BC. Anyone wishing to remember Jim, may make a donation to the Mission Community Foundation.
Passed to her Heavenly home March 1, 2014 at Christine Morrison Hospice, Mission, BC. Born in Pordenau, Russia January 26, 1938 to Heinrich and Margarete Driediger who, along with her brother Alfred, have pre-deceased her. She leaves to mourn her husband of 54 years Dick, son Dale (Donna), daughter Janis Thomas, two grandchildren, Brandon and Aaron Klemets, along with relatives in Alberta and Germany. A Memorial Service will be held on March 13, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Northview Community Church, 32040 Downs Rd., Abbotsford, BC. Thanks to the staff at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Center and Christine Morrison Hospice for all their kindness and care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Society in her memory.
TOTH Alan Sandor July 17, 1937 ~ Feb. 22, 2014
With his family at his side, Al passed away peacefully on February 22nd in Nanaimo Regional Hospital. Al was predeceased by parents Sandor and Marie, and brother Daniel Toth. He will be fondly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Kay and children Gary (Juanita), Mandy, Steve (Barb), Brian (Regina); grandchildren Riley, Ben, Owen, Soren, Cameron, Kendra, Nicole, Karl, and niece Wendy, nephew Ken and sister-in-law Nancy, and other extended family. Born in Toronto, raised in Surrey, Al settled in Abbotsford with wife Kay where they raised their four children and resided for 52 years, before relocating to Parksville. Al was a career meat cutter (UFCW member), a dedicated father and provider, and a lifelong outdoorsman. He was an active supporter of minor hockey and softball. His passion for nature was engrained in his children at a young age through regular fishing, camping, hunting and hiking trips that everyone was included in. Dad, you will be in our thoughts and hearts forever. You’ve left an enduring legacy. Look for me when the tide is high, And the gulls are wheeling overhead. I am there, where the river flows, and salmon leap to a silver moon. Where the insects hum, and the tall grass grows, and the sunlight warms the afternoon. (Iris Hesselden) The family wishes to express their sincerest thanks to the nurses, staff and volunteers at the Palliative Care Unit of the Nanaimo Regional Hospital, and the Home Support Team from the Oceanside Health Centre. No service by request. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your preference are encouraged.
