Outside-thebox approach to filling downtown Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Downtown Chilliwack needs help now. That’s why City of Chilliwack and Chilliwack Economic Partners Corporation are embarking on a unique business development proposal by Walas Concepts fuelled by innovative business incubation. Walas is a consulting group that specializes in revitalizing downtown cores with a glut of vacant or under-utilized buildings. “The hope is that with Walas Concepts on board, they will bring their system into our community and work on the ground with the community to become that all-important transition needed to move forward with the downtown redevelopment,” said CEPCO president Brian Coombes. Chilliwack council approved $65,000 in CDI funding Tuesday for the “Finding the Future” concept plan, which would have a $195,000 annual budget to concentrate on business development and attraction in the downtown, as well as boosting commercial occupancy. The creative proposal from Walas was presented to CEPCO last month. It envisions Chilliwack as a prototype of the future, “a centre for innovation and sustainability,” fostering the learning economy and a green economy, and functioning as a new business incubator with a focus on the agriculture, the environment, education and health care. Chilliwack could become an agribusiness hub, a “food valley.” The concept would complement the city’s downtown plan that has focused lately on land assembly, with an eye to significant redevelopment and revitalization. “But we don’t know the exact timeline of that redevelopment,” said Coombes. “We do know the downtown needs help now.” Continued: CHILLIWACK/ p6

Chilliwack woman on mission of mercy to Ukraine

Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Mary Martz of Chilliwack is forging ahead with a mission of mercy to conflict-torn Ukraine. “We’re hoping things will stabilize,” she said before getting on a plane Wednesday. Foreign Affairs officials are advising Canadians against all travel to the part of Ukraine known as Crimea. Martz, a translation volunteer with Hungry for Life, is flying to Ukraine with a friend to help out an orphanage that is about to run out of food, as well as visiting family and friends. She’s a Ukrainian citizen, who’s been a permanent resident of Canada for the past 12

years. Martz said she has several siblings and her parents to check on, as well as helping some struggling elders in the community who are not receiving their pensions. The situation in Ukraine gained the worldwide attention last month after Russian Federation’s military forces

invaded and occupied key Ukrainian installations, with bloody skirmishes that saw protesters killed. Canada views the federation’s actions as a “violation of international law” and responded with a statement from Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada that said: “Canada has been among the

most vocal in the international community in expressing our disapproval over democratic back-sliding and repression in Ukraine. We remain very concerned about the situation in Ukraine and continue to monitor developments with considerable interest.” The government message continued: “Canada stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine in their fight for a free and democratic Ukraine.” Martz said she plans to lay flowers at the memorial site in Kyiv “where so many lost their life fighting for freedom,” and wants to see the luxurious digs of the former president. Pornography and the adolescent brain I recently watched the movie Don Jon, where the main character, a young man in his early 20s, watches pornography constantly, claiming that he has done so for as long as he can remember. He observes that porn is saturated with onedimensional characters; it is one-sided and completely about him; and he feels it’s better than a relationship because it provides instant gratification, there is no work required, and there is no need to consider another person’s needs or desires. Fortunately, by the end of the movie he realizes that pornography does not, in fact, fulfill his needs and that connection with a real person – thinking about

their wants and needs – actually increases satisfaction and intimacy in a relationship. Between the ages of 12 and 24, the human brain undergoes a period of great neurop l a s t i c i t y, meaning Eryn that it is WICKER malleable and billions of new synaptic connections are being made. This leaves us vulnerable to the influence of our surroundings and leads our brains to be “wired” around the experiences and information that we receive

with their sexual performance and relationships. Men who sought help reported that many of their symptoms began to disappear. Youth who have healthy outlets that give them positive neural connections are not as vulnerable to the longterm impact of pornography use. It is important to recognize that positive choices and activities during the adolescent years can contribute to improved and positive brain development. In addition, from my own research: Pornography can cause shame, not only about the practice of viewing it, but also about masturbation and one’s body and self-image. According to studies, adolescent use of pornography decreased as their self-confidence and social development increased, which speaks to the need for social and emotional resiliency training in schools and at home. The biggest lesson in all of this is the importance of letting our children know that sexuality is nothing to be ashamed of. Young people should know that a filter on a computer can protect them from images that may be too much for their developing brains to handle. Likewise, parents and caregivers should take an active role by helping to guide and educate their children, without relying solely on the sex education provided in schools.

When young people experience such growth, change, and experimentation, we, as parents and caregivers, need to ask ourselves how can we provide the most supportive and brainhealthy environment for our children? Increased internet access by adolescents has created unprecedented opportunities for sexual education, learning, and growth. However, if pornography becomes a teen’s primary mode of sex education, it can be harmful to the brain’s sexual development. Brain chemistry can become shaped by the attitudes, images and situations that are being watched, including: expecting a similar heroin-like dopamine rush from all real-life sexual experiences; being wired to expect separation between sex and relationships; and believing that men’s and women’s bodies should be sexually exaggerated. Collette Bohach, a UFV Child and Youth Care student who is completing her practicum with our team at MCFD, recently wrote an article for a class she has with Dr. Rob Lees on this very topic: Pornography Addiction and the Teenage Brain. As I read her paper the following things stood out for me: Youth who engage in over-use of pornography begin to lose the ability to find pleasure in everyday things. Men seeking help reported that they did not even realize porn was creating problems until they were adults and it began to interfere

Jenny Clough: Helping to build a better world grew up in the Okanagan community of Summerland. While Jenny enjoyed living in the small community, she concedes that there wasn’t a whole lot to do there. Jenny was very active in theatre and her sister was equally artistic. “My sister had an amazing and beautiful voice,” she enthused. There was no question in Jenny’s mind that after graduation she would head off Ana to university. Her intention was to MACEDO pursue business and while she certainly started off headed down that path; she changed course mid-stream and went into psychology. “I got my psychology degree but eventually got back into business,” she laughed.

Now Jenny met a handsome young man while attending UBC and there was no doubt that the couple just clicked. “We got married in 1989 and moved to Whiterock,” she said, smiling. Doug was an engineer and an opportunity presented itself in Chilliwack that the young couple just couldn’t pass up. “Doug’s uncle started Omega Engineering but he retired and the business had long since lapsed. We purchased the name and started Omega Engineering as a brand new business. In 1995 we moved here when our daughter Brittany was just three months old. A new job, a new house and a new baby,” she chuckled heartily. The couple settled in Promontory and Jenny soon got involved in Hobby Hill Preschool. The go-getter then joined the team that set-up and organized Promontory Heights Community

School. Jenny was eventually hired as the school coordinator, a position that she held for five years. “They are still running some of the programs that I started back then. I absolutely loved every minute of it, but Brittany and Anthony moved on to middle school and then high school and at that point, it was time for me to move on.” While she remained involved in the family business, Jenny decided to open up a ladies fitness and health spa in Abbotsford and she ran the enterprise successfully for six years. However, in July 2013 she decided to sell the company. “While I owned the business, I developed the ‘Total Makeover Challenge.’ My goal was to help and motivate others to feel and look their best. There are so many people that are faced with some major challenges in their life and this was my way of helping people

deal with them and ultimately overcome them. There are some real success stories and it’s truly heartwarming,” she explained. Jenny has also been active in fund raising efforts for a variety of charities. “I’m especially passionate about organizations that help women and children.” Last year, she helped her daughter Brittany raise $10,000 for ‘Free the Children’. These days, our world has become rather small and Jenny has also developed a keen interest in our global village. “This November, I will be travelling with a group of women to Haiti as part of Compassion Canada. Our aim will be to help women and children get back on their feet in that country. I am so looking forward to this trip and am thinking ahead to what I can do next. Perhaps it will be Africa,” she smiled.

Jenny Clough is a woman with a ‘can-do’ attitude. Her enthusiasm is infectious and encourages those around her to be the best that they can be. So it should come as no surprise that Jenny is now focused on helping others not only locally but internationally as well. Her parents were born and raised in the United Kingdom. At the age of 19, they were married and decided to cross the Atlantic, with just $100 to their name, to seek new fortunes in Canada. Her mother began teaching almost immediately while her father got involved in the forestry industry. “Dad eventually went into construction and started his own business but he ended up losing his company during the economic crash of the 1970s. Unfortunately, my parents ended up divorced,” she said. Jenny and her younger sister

Her commitment to education and unwillingness to concede in the face of incredible adversity makes Monzur an ideal keynote speaker for Abbotsford’s International Women’s Day event says Sharanjit Sandhra, coordinator of UFV’s Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies (CICS). According to Sandhra, who invited Monzur to participate, she exemplifies the challenges that led to the creation of the global activist movement called V-Day that grew into One Billion Rising events across the world. “For Rumana to have experienced such violence and aggression and come out not with bitterness, but with a renewed sense of spirit and drive to succeed is something that would motivate anyone,” says Sandhra, who is co-organizing the March 8 event. “We at the UFV Centre for IndoCanadian Studies are very proud to be a part of the annual International Women’s Day and the One Billion Rising celebrations because such events serve as reminders that underneath our different cultures, backgrounds, and overall life experiences, there is a narrative that

Abbotsford’s One Billion Rising event added a powerful voice with the recent inclusion of women’s rights advocate Rumana Monzur. The event, co-presented by the University of the Fraser Valley, takes place at Thunderbird Civic Plaza and The Reach Gallery Museum on International Women’s Day, March 8. Monzur made international headlines in June, 2011 after being brutally assaulted by her husband in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

No challenge too great for women While business women have come a long way, it wasn’t all that long ago that women were more than likely to be found working in offices, retail stores and restaurants. However, today it’s commonplace to see women rivaling men in top-ranking jobs in corporations of every kind, in banking, in elected government positions, in every single known profession and in jobs where we never even imagined we would ever see women! Government launches International Women’s Week Ottawa- Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP, Mark Strahl, on behalf of the Honourable Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, is inviting constituents to celebrate International Women’s Week 2014, March 2 to 8. This year’s event will highlight the important role played by women entrepreneurs in the Canadian economy, with the theme: Strong Women. Strong Canada. Canadian Women –Creating Jobs One Business at a Time. “Entrepreneurs are the engines of

growth, the creators of jobs and the drivers of innovation on which our economy relies, and so it makes sense to celebrate women business owners during International Women’s Week 2014. These women make outstanding contributions to our economy every day and our Government is committed to supporting their success,” said Minister Leitch. International Women’s Day was established in Canada in 1977 following a United Nations resolution calling on member states to proclaim a day for

women’s rights and international peace. Since 2007, Status of Women Canada’s Women’s Program has provided more than $53 million in funding for projects that specifically focus on improving women’s economic security and prosperity, including over $9 million for projects which aid and support women’s entrepreneurship. In total the Government has supported 680 community-based projects. “We want to celebrate the significant contributions women in businesses make in building our economy and enriching

our local community. When women entrepreneurs win, we all win,” said Strahl. As of 2011, 15.6% of small and medium sized businesses in Canada were majority-owned by women. Women owned businesses currently employ over 1.5 million Canadians and contribute $148 billion to the Canadian economy.

Driving through the mountain canyons back from Granada to Malaga was a real treat. The countryside is rustic and beautiful and the twisty roads sublime. Cornering is effortless and the bigger wheels and lowered suspension give great feedback but it is not jarring. Verdict Mercedes Benz is enabling more people to access its brand with smaller less expensive vehicles. Though not in order of preference, here are my ten choices. 2014 GMC/Chevy Silverado/Sierra ½ ton pickup has gone through some monumental changes this year. The Nissan Leaf: A car that drives and parks itself It is pouring with rain so the car drops you off at the supermarket entrance and heads off on its own to find a parking spot way the heck and yonder at the other end of the mall. When you have finished your Big Shop for the week, it is still raining cats, dogs and frogs so you hit the button on the key fob. The car returns from wherever it was and you load up with nary a drop of the wet stuff falling on your head. Futuristic fantasy? – Well, getting your hands on the key fob to an autonomous drive car may mean a wait until 2020 when Nissan plans to

Confessions of a Curber It happened just after the last flood. The T winter beat records for snowfall, and springtime saw serious seriou flooding. Basements filled, streets were running with water, and cars were left to float and sink. One day, I walked past a junk yard and saw, what I thought, was a rrelatively normal car.

the vehicle could get a person from A to B. Suddenly, I had an idea. Since the car looked fine on the outside, no one had to know its real history. I was a genius. After a night in the garage with a heater and a little scrubbing, I posted an ad on Craigslist: “2004 black Toyota Corolla for sale. No longer need, bought new car. No room in garage – need to sell ASAP!!! Few scratches, otherwise in great condition. Call cell and we’ll talk price.” Thirty minutes later I got a call from a sixteen-year old kid – a little younger than my son. We decided to meet at the local mall at about 6:00. I wonder if his parents knew what he was up to. I arrived at 6:20, telling him I was in a great rush as I had to pick my son up from soccer practice. Turns out he played, too. After some soccer gossip, we got down to business. I knew that a kid his age just wanted a ride to show off to his friends, so we spent little time on the details. I told him the car was in perfect condition and was never in any accidents. “No problems as far as I know,” I said. The kid was sold. He trusted me. I never gave him my full name, and he never gave me his. He gave me the cash, I gave him the car. All was good. I was on my way. A few days later, I saw a TV program that talked about flood damaged vehicles. Apparently, flooding can damage the computer systems, which control things like the brakes and steering. And flood vehicles can’t be registered or insured. Who knew? My mind immediately went to the kid I sold the vehicle to. I felt a twinge of guilt. Then my eyes darted to my stash of cash. Two weeks later, I had another car up for sale. Stay tuned!

Falcons a favourite at basketball provincials For a second straight year the Sardis secondary school Falcons will battle for a provincial senior boys basketball title. The championship chase starts Wednesday at the Langley Events Centre, with the Falcons and Kelowna Owls squaring off in the provincial tournament opener. “We played them this year and won by 10 in our home gym,” said Sardis coach Kyle Graves. “But they’re a really hard working team and they have some of the best Grade 10 players in the province.” The Falcons didn’t make it easy on themselves getting here. After walloping Heritage Park 78-62 in their Fraser Valley playoff opener, Sardis stumbled in a 76-46 loss to the Gleneagle Talons. That left them in do-or-die territory, with two Abbotsford opponents standing between them and a berth in the 69th annual provincial championships. They faced the Yale Lions last Thursday, and had to rally from 20 down to escape

with a 74-73 win. “This year, we’ve been favourites all the way, where last year we were in the easier position of underdog,” Graves said. “I think they just hit a snag against Yale where they were mentally tired. They really had to bring themselves back from the dead in that one.” They thumped the W.J. Mouat Hawks 96-82 the next night, finally securing the provincial spot they’ve seemed pre-destined for before this season even began. “I’d consider it an amazing accomplishment making it two years in a row,” Graves said. “Only three or four teams are back from last year’s tournament, so that says a lot about our group. It’s been a lot of hard work building up to this moment.” With a lot of work to come. The Owls are a daunting opening opponent. “But as long as we match their work ethic, I think our experience should be the difference,” Graves noted. “And

This one’s at 10, which means our players can sleep in their own beds and pretty much get up when they usually do.” A win against the Owls would send the Falcons on to a game against Gleneagle, with that playoff loss sticking in their minds. “We imploded in that one game, but we know then very well,” Graves said. “We beat them twice last year and once earlier this year. They’ll be tough, but I’m happy to stay away from Tamanawis, who I didn’t really want to see until the semi-finals.” Graves views the Wildcats as a lock for the final four, with a team that’s played together year-round for the last two years. “Then you have the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs (Vancouver) on the other side, and they’ve been ranked No. 1 for most of the year,” Graves said. “The Holy Cross Crusaders (Surrey) are this year’s evil private school, with

a lot of good players showing up on their doorstep.” Graves has said all along that his team can go toe-to-toe with anyone talent wise. His big guns are well known — Hayden Lejeune, Eric Rogers and Cam Servatius will have to be at the top of their games. But it’s an under-the-radar guy who could be the true difference maker. “Colin Kellington, not many people know about him yet, but he’s knocked down five threes over the last couple games,” Graves said. “He hit a free throw with three seconds left to get us past Yale, which is really something, for a young kid to do that in that situation.” Team captain Grayden Northey could also tip the scales. “He really stepped up in the elimination games, hitting clutch free throws and playing great defence,” the coach said. “He really wants it and he’s taking it personally to lead the team.” Follow all the games online at bcboysbasketball.com.

The first round of the BCHL playoffs started earlier this week with a couple of surprises. The third place Coquitlam Express took game two in Prince George to even their series at one, and the fourth place Surrey Eagles are also tied 1-1 with first place Langley. Quick tangent here. Why is the league back to starting the playoffs mid-week? They understandably do everything they can to avoid mid-week games during the regularr season, but would it not make more sense to playy a few more mid-week games during the regularr season, end the season a week earlier and let the teams who earned home ice advantage start theirr series with weekend games? I’m going to answerr my own question: yes. The biggest surprise so far is the Alberni Valleyy Bulldogs and Victoria Grizzlies series tied at one. T he Grizzlies finished with 29 more points than The the Bulldogs during the regular season. The one series I thought we might see an upset in hasn’tt played out that way so far. I thought the Nanaimo Clippers might upset the Powell River Kings butt the Kings lead that series 2-0. No surprise at all in the Interior where the Penticton Vees hold a 2-0 series lead on the Merritt Centennials and the West Kelowna Warriors and Vernon Vipers are tied at one. The Vernon vs West Kelowna series is the toughest to pick and should end up being the best series of the first round. The Chiefs held their end of season awards banquet on Sunday. The big winners w ere Mathieu Tibbet (MVP/Top Scorer/3 Stars), were T anner Cochrane (Fan Favorite and Unsung Tanner Hero) and Carter Cochrane (Top Defenseman and Rookie of the Year). The University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team (19-5) hopes the fourth time’s the charm as they head into the 2014 CIS Final Four tournament. It gets underway today, with UFV taking on the University of Alberta Pandas (22-2) in a tough semi-final draw. If the Cascades get by the Pandas, they’ll face either the Regina Cougars or Saskatchewan Huskies in the final. By the same token, a

loss would leave them facing one of those two teams in a bronze-medal match. This is UFV’s fourth consecutive appearance, with four soon-tobe graduating seniors on the roster. They enter the tournament on a seven game winning streak, which sounds impressive. But the Pandas haven’t lost since early November, and hold the No. 3 spot in the national rankings. Oscar Schultz went to be with the Lord on March 2, 2014 at Chilliwack General Hospital at the age of 82. Oscar was born on November 11, 1931 in Rosser, Manitoba to Herman and Ferdinanda Schultz. The Schultz family moved to Chilliwack in 1946. Oscar graduated from Chilliwack Senior Secondary and began working at Canada Packers (York Farms in Sardis) in 1950. He worked for the same company for 42 years, including 4 years in Lethbridge and 4 years in Toronto. During his career he worked his way up from Bookkeeper to Company President. Oscar married the love of his life, Joyce Cramer in 1953 and they were happily married for over 60 years. Travelling was a big part of Oscar’s career and retirement. He enjoyed travelling to over 30 countries. His favorite holidays included their annual month in Waikiki and many cruises with family and friends. Other hobbies included hunting, ½shing, gol½ng and curling. Oscar was a faithful member of the Chilliwack Alliance Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, board member and church treasurer. Oscar was a devoted family man and a well respected businessman who left a legacy of encouragement, integrity and love. He will be sadly missed by his wife Joyce, children June Weathermon, Don (Cynthia) Schultz, Barb (Lyle) Mammel and Brenda (Daryl) Goshulak, 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, brothers Ed (Isabel) Schultz and Richard Schultz and sisters Hilda Schindel and Frieda Dams. Special thanks to Dr. Enns, Dr. Wilson and the caring nurses in CGH, ICU. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Chilliwack Alliance Church, 8700 Young Road, Chilliwack; Rev. Greg Dalman of½ciating. Dec 10, 1947 - Feb 21, 2014 “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash”... as he liked to introduce his tribute shows. Daryl loved all the people he met on his journeys. Daryl leaves behind his loving wife Carroll; six children; nine grandchildren; one brand new great granddaughter. Predeceased by his daughter Katharine and his brother Ken. He also leaves behind his dogs, Annie and Sam and black cat, Hannah. A tribute to Daryl will be held at Vedder Legion, Branch 280, 5661 Vedder Road, April 20, 2014, from 1-3pm.

Strachan Elsie

“...and we will also love you forever.” Elsie passed away peacefully, taking her last breath at the age of 82 at the Cascade Hospice on March 2, 2014 after surviving for two weeks following a hemorrhagic stroke. Mom, along with her brother George, was born a twin to a large family in Rycroft, Alberta on May 22, 1931. She left home at a very early age to live with her sister Anne in Edmonton and worked as a waitress until she obtained employment working in a mining camp kitchen in Yellowknife. Later, in a mining camp in BC, she met her future husband, Jim. They were married in Kaslo 1952. In the early years of their marriage they moved to many communities and jobs throughout BC before finally settling in Sardis in 1960. Following a brief foray to Mackenzie they moved back to Sardis two blocks from where they originally settled. A few years after the death of her husband she sold her home and moved into an apartment, still in Sardis, where she spent her remaining years playing bingo, watching the ducks and geese at Sardis Park and going to the mall for seven up and scones with her friend James. Elsie is survived by her son Jim (Jody); her daughter Ellen Bone (Tom); granddaughter Ellery; grandson Faukes; two brothers in Alberta and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her good friend James Knight. She was predeceased by her husband, James Barclay Strachan in 1991 and many of her brothers and sisters. Elsie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and “the Skip-Bo Queen of the World”. Many thanks go to the doctors and caregivers of 4 South Chilliwack General Hospital, Cascade Hospice and Henderson’s Funeral Home for seeing to the post-mortem arrangements. There will be no service by request.

Heath, Albert “Gordon” Oct 3, 1915 - Feb. 21, 2014

Dad passed away peacefully on Friday, Feb. 21 at Chilliwack General Hospital with his two daughters Janet and Wendy at his side. Gordon was predeceased by his wife of 63 years on November 10, 2002. He was also predeceased by all of his siblings. Dad is survived by his children Fred and Beryl Heath, Janet and Don Fulton, Wendy and Darryl Palmer, Kevin and Tangerine Heath; grandchildren Ken and Marie, Pam and Jason, Gord and Sanjeline, Dan and Nicole, Tom and Lia, Kate, Tamara & Pete, Shaunna & Chris, Gavin, Curtis; and numerous great & great great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Gordon lived his life as a strong, reliable, committed and caring man. He was devoted to his wife and family. Gordon was proud of and loyal to serving the City of Chilliwack as Superintendent of Public Works for 30 years from 1950 until his retirement in 1980. Of his commitment to those who worked for him he said “I never fire a man because if I did I would not be able to help them.” Which he continued to help people throughout his life whenever he could. A man with a big heart he was. As well as enjoying golf (he had 6 holes in one) and was very proud; he also enjoyed fishing. He and the family spent many summers at Timothy and Loon Lake. He also loved curling of which he was the proud owner of the “eight ender” picture that he and his team won one year. After a long and full life Dad has gone to be home with the “Big Man above”. A service for dad will be held at St. Thomas Anglican Church, 46048 Gore Ave in Chilliwack at 1:00pm, Saturday, March 29th. A tea will follow at the church hall.

After a long and happy life full of adventure, Betty has left us to look after things ourselves. She passed peacefully on the morning of February 12th with her son Allan at her side. Betty was born in Innisfail Alberta to Pitner and Mary Osmond. Betty tragically lost both of her parents to illness before the age of ten and was separated from her younger sister Eleanor for the remainder of her upbringing as they were raised by different relatives. At the age of 17 she lied about her age in order to get into nursing school in Panoka Alberta. She was trained as a Psychiatric Nurse and worked in various locations throughout BC including Vernon Jubilee and Riverview Hospitals. Betty met and married Glen Thorpe in Vernon BC prior to his deployment overseas where he was killed during WWII. In 1946 she married Jack Hunt with whom she raised two sons (Allan and Norman). During their years in Vernon they owned a small farm and operated a butcher shop. In 1964 Betty and Jack moved to Coquitlam where they both retired from their respective careers. Retirement eventually found them living on Salt Spring Island for 10 years followed by their move to Chilliwack in 1986. Betty and Jack adored their grandchildren and spent much of their time visiting and supporting their various activities and adventures. Jack predeceased Betty in 1990. Though they were mostly raised apart, Betty maintained a close relationship with her sister Eleanor Dungate and her family until her passing in 2001. She often spoke of how much she missed her sister in recent years. In 1993 Betty married Al Waite, whose family had been friends for many, many years. Together they embarked on many cross country adventures in their trailer, cruised to too many ports of call to mention and made many friends throughout the world. In 2009, Betty received the surprise of her life when her first born son (whom she had given up for adoption at the age of 21) found her family in Chilliwack and wanted to meet. Since then Betty has been blessed to get to know Bill and some of his family and even made a trip to Alberta in 2012 to visit his family in his home town. As time took its toll on Betty and Al’s health, they found that their needs were better met in assisted living. They were always supported by Betty’s son Allan and family who lived locally. Sadly, in 2011 Al passed after a lengthy illness. The Waite family would continue to love, support and treat Betty as one of their own. Shortly after Al’s passing, Betty continued her adventure by moving in with her Granddaughter Kristen and her husband Chad. Together they had many special times, shared much laughter and had the opportunity to grow closer. Betty loved “her” cat Molly who she was always giving treats to and Sammy (the German Shepherd) who came along on all adventures in the car and who went to bed with her every night. Betty is survived by her three sons; Bill (Lorna) Stutchbury of Barrhead AB; Allan (Sonja) Hunt of Chilliwack and Norman (Marilyn) Hunt of Aldergrove; Granddaughters Kristen (Chad) MacPherson of Chilliwack and Lisa (Matt) Tatarniuk and Grandson Danny Hunt of Langley; Great Grandson AJ Raposo of Portugal and Great Granddaughters Caetlynn and Sidney of Langley; Nieces Sandra (Tim) Mah and Kathleen (Warren) Wilson, both of Kamloops. She is remembered by Al’s family, daughters Myra Merkal (Steve), Sylvia Sax (Bo), sons Carter Waite (Fiona) and Roger Waite (Kim) and their families. Granny is missed greatly by pets Sammy, Molly and Maggie too. Betty was predeceased by her Granddaughter Jody Stutchbury. Many thanks to the staff at Cascade Lodge (especially Theresa, Heidi, Kelsey, Gary, Nasar, Nicole, Maria and Katherine) who made Betty’s time with them as comfortable as possible. A celebration of Life will be held on April 25th at 2pm, Cooke’s Prebyterian Church in Chilliwack. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities. 03/14W_OW7

We sadly announce that our dear husband, father and (great) grandpa passed away on February 28, 2014 after a lengthy battle with multiple myeloma. Bert is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Sheila, and children Yvonne (Ron), David (Colleen), Michael (Stephanie), Jacqueline (Brett), Nancy (Jim) and grandchildren, Nigel (Danielle), Alicia (Andy), Garrett (Sarah), Leanne, Shelby, Brittney, Brendan, Chelsea, Gabrielle, Chloe, Daniel, Marcus & Gregory, as well as great grandchildren Liam and Presley. Born in Islington, Highbury England, Bert and his family immigrated to Canada in 1955 and made it their home. Bert trained in England as a civil engineer and continued in his passion and profession for the majority of his life in Canada. He was a proud member of the 3rd Field Squadron of the Militia Unit in Ottawa during the 60’s before moving to Western Canada in the 70’s Among Bert’s many accomplishments was the design of bridges for the BC Department of Forestry which included the design of the bridges used during the 2010 Winter Olympics cross country ski trails. Bert was a proud member of the APEG and a life member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Special thanks to Dr. Page and all the doctors and caregivers of the Fraser Health Authority. A special thanks to Dr. GaIbraith and the nurses of the Abbotsford Cancer Unit. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
