The Fraser Valley Regional District has rebuffed attempts by Metro Vancouver to talk about Metro’s proposed waste-to-energy garbage incinerator, saying the region’s key concern of a threat to air quality is getting sidelined. Metro is mandated by the province to create a working group with the FVRD on the project’s potential impacts to the airshed. The one year of consultations are expected to begin this spring, when Metro reveals all potential sites under consideration and narrows the number of prospective builders and their technologies. “What Metro is trying to pass off as consultation now is a working group mandated by the province to talk about mitigation measures, not to discuss the merits of incineration,” said FVRD board chair Sharon Gaetz on Thursday. “Metro Vancouver has never GAETZ consulted with the FVRD on the impacts that its planned garbage burner will have on our fragile airshed, nor do they intend to do so. They have been quite clear that they feel they do not have to consult with us on burning garbage because they believe that decision has already been made.” Last Friday, Metro Vancouver directors defended their push to build a new garbage incinerator for the region and criticized FVRD politicians for refusing to participate in consultations so far. Moore said the expert panel consists of independent consultants – Metro staff don’t even sit on it. Gaetz has also repeatedly requested that consultations be public in order to be meaningful. “The community charter stipulates that meetings of elected officials are expected to be in public and not behind closed doors,” said Gaetz. “Meaningful discussion starts with transparency and open sharing of ideas. Another huge sockeye salmon run is forecast to return to the Fraser River this summer, potentially even bigger than the modern record of 30 million that unexpectedly came back in 2010. The fish that are now on their homeward migration back to B.C. waters are the spawn of that massive run four years ago, which was the best in a century. Pre-season estimates of this summerâ€™s run size from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans range from a low of 7.3 million to a high of 72.5 million, with the more probable mid-range forecast set at 23 million. Until the salmon begin appearing off Vancouver Island, however, thereâ€™s little way to know with certainty what proportion of fry that went out to sea survived and thrived in the marine environment. Much depends on ocean conditions, such as water temperature and the amount of food and predators they encountered. Itâ€™s been theorized that iron-rich ash from the eruption of an Alaskan volcano in 2008 caused a plankton bloom that increased the food supply, contributing to the 2010 sockeye run. No volcano fertilized the North Pacific waters since then, but salmon watchers are waiting to see if a rogue geoengineering project had any similar effect. A Haida-led team controversially dumped 200 tonnes of iron dust in the ocean in 2011 with the aim of trapping atmospheric carbon and boosting salmon returns. A 10,000-square-kilometre plankton bloom was later detected by satellites. Commercial harvesters, sport fishing operators and aboriginal fishermen, meanwhile, are all buzzing with anticipation over the potential run. But processors caution a huge record run could overwhelm fish packing plants that were pressed to their limit in 2010. â€œIt was a large challenge and Iâ€™m not sure we could have handled very much more fish,â€? recalled Rob Morley, vice-president of production and corporate development at Canadian Fishing Co. (Canfisco). He noted the range of 2014 estimates is broad and salmon forecasting is notoriously inexact. But Morley said other signs coming in point to a very good year for sockeye all along the coast, including runs to Barkley Sound and the Skeena River. â€œWeâ€™ve seen very good returns of three-year-old fish this past summer,â€? he said, referring to sockeye that come back a year early and are called immature jacks. Strong coho returns also suggest good ocean survival for sockeye. Morley said processors hope a strong run can be verified soon enough for fishery managers to approve early and steady openings, rather than a later, more compressed window. â€œIf we are, in fact, seeing a lot of fish and get started sooner, it will help everybody handle more fish.â€? Sto:lo Tribal Council fisheries advisor Ernie Crey warned against allowing intensive commercial fishing too soon this summer without solid justification. â€œEveryoneâ€™s getting excited,â€? he said. â€œItâ€™s great the forecast is looking that good. But we canâ€™t forget that weâ€™ve had three inquiries into failures of Fraser sockeye salmon runs. Things can go terribly wrong and people can be very disappointed.â€? If errors are made and managers decide midseason theyâ€™ve allowed too much fishing, Crey said, the only place to compensate and ensure enough salmon spawn is to then curtail the aboriginal catch upriver. DFO officials say Fraser sockeye appear to be gradually rebuilding since the disastrous 2009 run.

The owner of a dog accused of attacking three other dogs last month in the Auguston area of Abbotsford says he has taken precautions to prevent it from happening again. He said he has also ensured that Cyrus is on a leash going to and from vehicles on the property. Jamall said he was surprised at the incidents, because Cyrus has never had previous problems. Jamall and his parents adopted the dog from the SPCA about two years ago, after he had been in an abusive environment with his previous owners. Jamall said Cyrus has an otherwise timid and shy demeanour. “He’s never been aggressive with a human. He’s such a suck. He sleeps with me every night.” The family was issued two bylaw infraction tickets by the city for having a “dog at large”

after three incidents occurred within eight days. Two of the incidents – on Feb. 12 and 19 – involved two pugs owned by Jamall’s neighbours. In the first case, Cyrus ran out of his front yard, grabbing one of the pugs by the neck as he was being walked by his owner. In the second incident, Jamall was walking Cyrus on leash, when one of the pugs escaped from her owner and ran up to Cyrus, nipping at his legs and barking, resulting in Cyrus grabbing her by the neck. Jamall claimed Cyrus was defending himself. In the third incident, on Feb. 20, a woman was walking her German shepherd when Cyrus bolted from his yard, grabbed hold of the dog’s neck and wouldn’t let go. In that instance, Jamall said he was returning with Cyrus from a trip in his vehicle, and he had grabbed Cyrus by the collar to walk him into the home. The collar had been improperly placed, and Cyrus got loose. “It was our fault completely,” Jamall acknowledged, adding that he has since purchased a more secure collar. Jamall said he hopes the extra precautions ensure there will be no further incidents and the neighbourhood can move forward.

I also know that there are questions to which I probably really don’t want to know the answers. However, I do have one question in particular. I’d like to know why a neat, clean and highly organized child loses those attributes in alarming escalations upon entry and progression through teenhood. Daily, I issue decrees and heated threats of dire consequences, to no avail. The teen has shed and fed. It moves on... ... until Sunday afternoon, when a stunning transformation takes place. The teen cleans, sorts, tidies, launders and folds. The condition is fleeting. However, there lies hope in the universal order of things.

Re: Letter, â€œHelp homeless by treating issues, by force if necessary.â€? I was surprised to read such a powerful statement. Whatâ€™s next? Will we arrest people for giving you a dirty look? Itâ€™s a slippery slope. Yes, we do have to get serious about this problem. This problem is political. Surprisingly, political concerns do require public involvement and if necessary, action. After all, that is why we vote. Social problems need real solutions. However, people have been spewing fallacious judgments based on closed-minded opinion without any reason, logic, nor understanding â€“ then we wonder why the issues are still there. â€œItâ€™s time for tough love.â€? This is an oxymoron. Aggressive â€œlove,â€? borders on anti-social behaviour. Detaining people for having a mental illness, an addiction, or a lack of a home

is an infringement of several human rights declarations. Forcibly detaining people for a context that is in some cases beyond control, or legitimately out of choice, borders on a George Orwell world. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which separates us from some would say animals, is something to be proud of, and we need to remember it in our city and how we are making value judgments on things we disagree with. â€œIf they refuse, anything else is going to make us all enablers of whatever problem they have.â€? With this type of logic, you are an enabler. â€œNot in my backyard,â€? or ignoring the problem is enabling. The idea of providing â€œclean paraphernaliaâ€? in the same manner as that of Insite in Vancouver is a harm reduction facility. I think you misunderstand the term. Insite has been

Mr. Timm’s Feb. 26 letter is a classic example of ad hominem arguing; not a single fact or data to substantiate his vitriolic attack on our democratically elected members of local government. Coun. Braun stated that the shelter would keep the residents off the street for two years. The only facility that will do that is a prison, not a ‘no-barriers’ residence that will allow the residents to come and go as they please. Fifteen million dollars spent on a homeless shelter is money not spent on seniors, children or taxpayers who contribute to the tax base of the municipality. Why don’t the councillors who supported the proposal, and the people who attended the rally, each take one homeless person into their home. Twenty years ago I did just that as I felt it was God’s will for me to do it. I received three things that affected me and my family’s life. The first was income – welfare gave me $400 a month, although my boarder attempted to have me split it with him. I refused, saying that since it was taxpayers’ money intended to cover rent that is where it should go. The second benefit was gaining insight into the mind of a petty criminal – my boarder had spent most of his adult life in prison. If everyone could have this experience maybe we could find a better solution to the problems of substance abuse, crime and homelessness. The third benefit was invaluable. My troubled pre-teen son had the opportunity to compare the choices that two men of the same age had made and where those choices would lead them. A child psychologist treating my son said that he was either going to be a brilliant scientist or a brilliant criminal. I am proud of my son today and I credit his experiences with my boarder as being a major contributor to the choices he has made in his life: no drugs, a good job, a growing family and planning to build his own home. Debbie Calicetto of Abbotsford has always enjoyed cooking meals for her friends and family and loves trying out new recipes. She is a volunteer youth care worker at Cyrus Centre for at-risk youth in Abbotsford where she also cooks meals, challenging herself to come up with creative dishes using donated food. Despite having no formal training as a cook or chef, Calicetto entered a recent cooking competition – and won. The Chopping Block contest followed the same format as the popular Chopped TV show, and the head judge was Vikram Vij from Top Chef Canada and Chopped Canada. The two other judges were Clinton Herman, a host of the radio morning show The Peak, and Ryan McDonald, executive chef at Urban Fare. The event took place Feb. 22 during the BC Home and Garden Show at BC Place. Calicetto, who is also a dance teacher and owner of Can Dance Studio in Mission, applied as a contestant by submitting her story about how she cooks meals for Cyrus Centre. A few weeks later, she found out she had been accepted and was invited to go up against three others in front of a live audience. Calicetto’s three competitors were a full-time caterer and food stylist for TV, film and magazine; a chef who works at his mom’s restaurant; and a chef who owns his own restaurant. The challenge involved three 20-minute rounds, with each contestant being presented with a black box of ingredients at the start of each round. One contestant was eliminated at the end of each level. In the first round, the four competitors were required to make an appetizer using kale, coconut cream, ginger beer, maple syrup and kangaroo meat. Calicetto prepared an Indian curry soup. “I was told I was very brave to cook curry as I was presenting my dish to the top Indian chef in Canada. But I made it to round two, and Vikram Vij loved my dish,” she

petitor, and their ingredients were cherry soda, cinnamon honey, chocolate apples and pistachios. Her creation was a soda crust apple pie with a salted caramel chocolate sauce and pistachio cream. Calicetto said she could not believe it when she was named the Chopping Block champion. “I started to cry. I was a dance teacher and I just beat out three top

chefs,” she said of her reaction to the win. Her prizes include a helicopter tour over Vancouver for four, with a stop on top of the Hyatt Regency and a private meal cooked in the penthouse suite by the executive chef. She also won a large gift basket of food and kitchen items, and all the leftover food from the competition was donated to Cyrus Centre.

Willband Creek Park will undergo revitalization efforts to curb invasive species and increase waterfowl habitat with support from a grant awarded to the city this week. The park, located at 34900 Bateman Road off of Highway 11, is a popular recreation area in Abbotsford. The work is made possible by a $7,500 grant that was awarded this week by TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF) and Tree Canada, which the city will match through inkind and cash funding. Willband Creek Park hosts trails that are built around storm water detention ponds. The area has a diverse waterfowl population, various species of migratory birds and other wildlife. But canary grass and Himalayan blackberry grow throughout the park, both of which are invasive plants that choke out native vegetation and decrease habitats for waterfowl. Math competition at UBC on March 8 Abbotsford’s St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary had a strong showing in a recent provincial math competition. The school’s Grade 8 and 9 teams each advanced to the provincials – taking place Saturday, March 8 at UBC’s Point Grey campus – after competing at the Fraser Valley Math Challengers event held recently at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV). As well, Young Jae Jung of St. John Brebeuf finished first out of 10 in the Grade 8 individual results. Imat Grewal from Mission Secondary took eighth spot, while Shua Cho from Clayburn Middle placed ninth in the same category. The competition involved Grade 8 and 9 students battling through three rounds – two individual rounds and a team round – after which the top 10 individuals from each grade faced off two at a time in the final buzzer round. The level of difficulty of the questions varied. Speed calculations were required in the first and fourth rounds, while more resourcefulness in problem-solving was important in the middle two rounds. Regional competitions are held across B.C. each February.

The under-16 boys hockey team from Yale Secondary rallied to win the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL) Elite 15s playoff title in thrilling fashion last Sunday in Vernon. Trailing Pursuit of Excellence 2-0 heading into the third period, Yale got goals from Christian Bosa and Nick Gauvin to knot the score, then went ahead on Ben Brar’s strike with 2:02 remaining. Brar rounded out the scoring with an emptynetter. The victory caps a terrific debut season for Yale, which finished first

during the CSSHL regular season and won the Richmond International Tournament. “It exceeds expectations,” program co-ordinator Billy Wilms said. “You never know what you’re going to get in Year 1 – you have no idea. There are too many question marks. So to compete as well as we did is exciting.” Yale also cleaned up at the CSSHL awards – Kohen Olischefski and Carter Shannon shared top scorer honours, Olischefski won the MVP award, Brett Clayton was student-athlete of the year, and Liam McCloskey was top goalie.

Driving through the mountain canyons back from Granada to Malaga was a real treat. The countryside is rustic and beautiful and the twisty roads sublime. A car that drives and parks itself By Keith Morgan

Drives-U-Crazy Passing on the right Many drivers appear ignorant of the rules concerning when it is okay to a pass a vehicle on the right. You must not pass on the right of another vehicle on a road marked with a single lane unless that driver is making or signaling a left turn. Frequently drivers zip to the right of a traffic waiting at the lights in a bid to roar off in front at the green. It’s extremely selfish because invariably it prevents cars making a right on a red. It is pouring with rain so the car drops you off at the supermarket entrance and heads off on its own to find a parking spot way the heck and yonder at the other end of the mall. When you have finished your Big Shop for the week, it is still raining cats, dogs and frogs so you hit the button on the key fob. The car returns from wherever it was and you load up with nary a drop of the wet stuff falling on your head. Futuristic fantasy? Well, getting your hands on the key fob to an autonomous drive car may mean a wait until 2020 when Nissan plans to begin selling that feature in multiple vehicles. However, a car capable of doing the task described in a driverless mode is here in the now. Nissan granted yours truly the opportunity recently to take a spin in a driverless electric-powered LEAF. Actually, the word spin doesn’t truly describe what was a very smooth and controlled ride around a course loaded with obstacles, traffic lights turning red, cars changing lanes unexpectedly and automated pedestrians wandering out in front

I would have hit the phoney ped that bounded out from the curb but not this ghost driver that took instantaneous evasive action. My drive was on an airport-based circuit away from the real world, while over in Japan Nissan has conducted some demonstrations on freeways. By the end of this year, a dedicated track featuring real townscapes – masonry, not model buildings will be ready. It will enable testers to push the vehicles impossible to carry out on public roads to

ensure the technology is safe. When the car is available for real world driving, a combination of GPS navigation and a tablet-style screen will enable the non-driving driver to direct the car to work, home, play or park with precision. You will be able to drive your favourite routes and it will map and record the preferences for future trips. The mock supermarket shopping demo was the most enjoyable part of my experience because driving around full parking lots looking for a space is not my favourite pastime. That said, I’m not thrilled at the thought of fun being removed from my daily driving. I like the use of technologies to avoid crashes but I can’t foresee a time when I would want to commit to fully-autonomous driving. Not because I don’t trust the technology but because I enjoy the challenges thrown up on my daily drive. And I have this fear that many will allow their skills to diminish and just relying on technology to get them out of trouble. It happened just after the last flood. The T winter beat records for snowfall, and springtime saw serious seriou flooding. Basements filled, streets were running with water, and cars were left to float and sink. One day, I walked past a junk yard and saw, what I thought, was a rrelatively normal car.

the vehicle could get a person from A to B. Suddenly, I had an idea. Since the car looked fine on the outside, no one had to know its real history. I was a genius. After a night in the garage with a heater and a little scrubbing, I posted an ad on Craigslist: “2004 black Toyota Corolla for sale. No longer need, bought new car. No room in garage – need to sell ASAP!!! Few scratches, otherwise in great condition. Call cell and we’ll talk price.” Thirty minutes later I got a call from a sixteen-year old kid – a little younger than my son. We decided to meet at the local mall at about 6:00. I wonder if his parents knew what he was up to. I arrived at 6:20, telling him I was in a great rush as I had to pick my son up from soccer practice. Turns out he played, too. After some soccer gossip, we got down to business. I knew that a kid his age just wanted a ride to show off to his friends, so we spent little time on the details. I told him the car was in perfect condition and was never in any accidents. “No problems as far as I know,” I said. The kid was sold. He trusted me. I never gave him my full name, and he never gave me his. He gave me the cash, I gave him the car. All was good. I was on my way. A few days later, I saw a TV program that talked about flood damaged vehicles. Apparently, flooding can damage the computer systems, which control things like the brakes and steering. And flood vehicles can’t be registered or insured. Who knew? My mind immediately went to the kid I sold the vehicle to. I felt a twinge of guilt. Then my eyes darted to my stash of cash. Two weeks later, I had another car up for sale. Stay tuned!

Ten top trucks to get the job done What are my favourite trucks? It’s a question readers ask me all the time in the supermarket and on the street. Though not in order of preference, here are my ten choices. 2014 GMC/Chevy Silverado/Sierra ½ ton pickup has gone through some monumental changes this year. What an improvement with a very comfortable and refined interior on all trim levels, and three engine choices, the Eco Tec 4.3-litre V6, 5.3-litre V8, and a 6.2-litre V8. 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. Very similar in design to its big brother the Silverado, this mid-size truck fills a void in Canada. Still expected to work as hard as a full-size truck, the Colorado can tow more than 3,039 kilograms (6700 lbs). A 2.5L I-4 engine is standard with an optional 3.6L V6 with a six-speed automatic transmission. 2015 GMC 3500HD Denali is a beast. This truck is built to pull and with 10,251 KG (22,600 lbs) of trailer towing capacity it does just that. The 6.6L V8 turbo engine delivers 397 hp and 765 lb ft of torque and is paired with a 1000 series Allison transmission. With interior upgrades such as 12-way power adjust-

The Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF) has launched its Smart and Caring Community initiative to help children in poverty and has announced its first two grants. One of the grants, for $10,500, goes to the Blessings in a Backpack program, which provides food for the weekend for kids and their families during the school year. The program is spearheaded by the Abbotsford Rotary Club, and it costs $525 to support each child through the school year. The other grant – for $5,000 – is going toward the Start2Finish program being piloted by Margaret Stenersen Elementary. The program, with a total cost of $12,500, will launch in September and, based on its success, might be duplicated in other local schools. Start2Finish is an after-school program involving training for a 5 km run and having a nutritional snack, followed by a reading program for children who aren’t getting these supports at home. A key component will be the involvement of volunteers who mentor them either in the running part of the program or the reading section. ACF’s Smart and Caring Community Fund will provide an additional $68,000 this year in grants to charitable organizations which have projects and programs that support children in poverty. HORACE James Vosburgh Passed away February 28, 2014. Jim was born to Horace and Veda (Culp) Vosburgh on January 4, 1930 in Mission City, BC. He is predeceased by his wife, Lois (McNelly), his son, Steven, his sister Doris, and brothers Bob and Walter. He is survived by his beloved friend, Wendy Wallach and many devoted relatives and friends. Jim was well known, a lifetime resident of Mission. After graduation in 1947, he attended U.B.C. for a year. He married Lois on March 7, 1953. Steven was born on September 28, 1954. Jim co-owned a logging truck until becoming a rep for Blue Ribbon Tea Company, then ran a gravel truck business until retirement. Community interest prompted him to run for Mission Council, where he served from 1978 1987. An avid camper and fisherman, his trips to Bella Coola are legendary. Later in life, as a member of the Valley Wood Turning Club, Jim turned bowls, made beautiful cedar chests, tackle boxes and other gifts that are deeply treasured. Another passion was flying model airplanes, spending many happy hours with friends at the field. “Uncle Jim” influenced two generations of young people with his quiet, loving kindness. His legacy to us all, is the happy memories we will share forever. Memorial Service to be held Sat., March 15, 2014, at 1:00 pm at St. Andrews United Church, Mission, BC. Anyone wishing to remember Jim, may make a donation to the Mission Community Foundation.

Passed to her Heavenly home March 1, 2014 at Christine Morrison Hospice, Mission, BC. Born in Pordenau, Russia January 26, 1938 to Heinrich and Margarete Driediger who, along with her brother Alfred, have pre-deceased her. She leaves to mourn her husband of 54 years Dick, son Dale (Donna), daughter Janis Thomas, two grandchildren, Brandon and Aaron Klemets, along with relatives in Alberta and Germany. A Memorial Service will be held on March 13, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Northview Community Church, 32040 Downs Rd., Abbotsford, BC. Thanks to the staff at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Center and Christine Morrison Hospice for all their kindness and care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Society in her memory.

With his family at his side, Al passed away peacefully on February 22nd in Nanaimo Regional Hospital. Al was predeceased by parents Sandor and Marie, and brother Daniel Toth. He will be fondly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Kay and children Gary (Juanita), Mandy, Steve (Barb), Brian (Regina); grandchildren Riley, Ben, Owen, Soren, Cameron, Kendra, Nicole, Karl, and niece Wendy, nephew Ken and sister-in-law Nancy, and other extended family. Born in Toronto, raised in Surrey, Al settled in Abbotsford with wife Kay where they raised their four children and resided for 52 years, before relocating to Parksville. Al was a career meat cutter (UFCW member), a dedicated father and provider, and a lifelong outdoorsman. He was an active supporter of minor hockey and softball. His passion for nature was engrained in his children at a young age through regular fishing, camping, hunting and hiking trips that everyone was included in. Dad, you will be in our thoughts and hearts forever. You’ve left an enduring legacy. Look for me when the tide is high, And the gulls are wheeling overhead. I am there, where the river flows, and salmon leap to a silver moon. Where the insects hum, and the tall grass grows, and the sunlight warms the afternoon.
