E
very fall for more than a decade, helicopters have buzzed Mill Hill park near Victoria to airlift away great mounds of Scotch broom. Volunteers and staff clip the shrub by hand, a laborious process for a war on invasive plants that has seen small victories, but still has no end in sight. Controlling invasive plants in Greater Victoria and elsewhere on Vancouver Island has often been a choice between years of hard manual labour or years of chemical treatment. Two University of Victoria biology graduates are developing a third option—a biotechnology that could flick a “kill” switch within a plant’s genetic code. Potentially, the treatment could precision target specific invasive species, and without harming neighbouring native plants or animals. And the solution might just come from a location in the Alberni Valley, where the duo has set up a laboratory. “Our roommate in environmental studies always suggested

problems for us to solve. That led us down this path,” said Chris Tuttle, who with Layne Woodfin, have created Cotyledon Consulting. UVic’s Innovation Centre for Entrepreneurs helped Tuttle and Woodfin refine their business plan, which is focused on defeating kudzu, an aggressive vine that has choked vast areas of the U.S. southwest. Both scientists are based in Victoria, but they’ve
set up what they call a “DIY” laboratory in Port Alberni—due to the low rental cost—to refine their genetic technology. “We are seeking a clear proof of concept by April. For business development we are looking at kudzu in the U.S. because the Scotch broom market is small,” Tuttle said. “If we can find funding here, we’d love to focus on Scotch broom.” The basis of the
technology is called RNA interference or RNAi, a relatively young field of biology that uses short strands of genetic material to deactivate specific genes within the DNA of certain organisms. This has proved extremely handy in understanding how genes work, and earned a Nobel Prize for the scientists who discovered it. Tuttle and Woodfin are developing RNAi
techniques to target genes unique to a specific invasive plant, and that would effectively turn off the plant’s ability to process nutrients, killing it and halting the ability for its seeds to germinate. Part of the development process is testing the safety and efficacy of RNAi strands, although Tuttle said it’s not something that can transfer between plants or other organisms. “We’re not infecting the plant—the contagion is RNA used to reprogram the plant’s current state,” she said. “(Herbicides such as) Roundup goes after a protein that makes nutrients in a plant, that without it would die. It blocks that protein. “But with ours we’ll prevent that protein from being built in the first place.” Developing genetic technology has become far more viable for startup companies due
to the steep drop in price and fast turnaround for sequencing and creating synthetic strands of DNA. Cotyledon would need to sequence kudzu DNA, for example, to understand how to construct interfering RNA. “Without making light of their skills, timing is everything. They wouldn’t have been able to do this 20 years ago,” said Anne Flanagan, a scientific advisor for Cotyledon and a patent agent based in Sidney. “(DNA) sequencing is now dirt cheap. Things that used to take a week now take half an hour.” Cotyledon has access to up to $93,000 from the National Research Council’s Industrial Research Assistance Program, but in terms of a biotechnology company, it’s on a shoestring budget. Still, it has managed to file for two technology patents. Flanagan said she’s encouraging Tuttle and Woodfin to develop their prototype as fast as possible due to the high cost of privatelyfunded scientific research. Equipment and experimental materials aren’t cheap, but the potential market for highly targeted herbicides is vast.

Eradicating invasive plants is an ongoing process for the City of Port Alberni’s public works department, says horticulture/ parks superintendent
Jacob Colyn. The city attacks invasive and noxious weeds on three fronts, although there is no specific funding set aside for the task. For noxious or poisonous weeds such as hogweed and Japanese knotweed, the city will use a backhoe to dig up offending weeds and properly dispose of
them by bagging them and burying them in the landfill, Colyn said. There are a couple of lots that the city treats annually in an effort to keep ahead of the invasive plan. “Where we’re really frustrated is we don’t have the tools to work where it’s invaded in aquatic areas,” he said.
There are no permits available to use herbicides because of the proximity to water, and it’s often inaccessible, he said. Colyn also works closely with non-profit organizations such as Broombusters Invasive Plant Society. “We will complement what public groups are doing,” he said, and assist by lending
tools when possible. City workers will also up cut broom from a pre-arranged spot once or twice a season and transport it to JW Berry, where it is incinerated and sold for hog fuel at Catalyst Paper. Last spring, Broombusters saw approximately 500 volunteers between Nanaimo and
Campbell River and into Port Alberni clear dozens of parks and roadways during more than 40 community cuts, director Joanne Sales said. “Broombusters helps communities organize cuts, but local volunteers cut the broom where they live. Qualicum Beach started in 2006 and is almost broom-free
now,” Sales said. “In 2013, the Port Alberni Rotary Club started the Broombusting effort near the AV Multiplex. This year there is lots of enthusiasm to ‘Cut the Bloomin’ Broom’ in Port Alberni,” she added. Anyone wanting to volunteer can go online at www. broombusters.org.

Tseshaht out $300,000 in Pallan bankruptcy WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
T
he Tseshaht First Nation is on the hook after a Campbell River logging company that owed it money declared bankruptcy. Campbell Riverbased logging company Pallan Timber Group announced last
fall that it was bankrupting at least one of its sub-companies: Howe Sound Forest Products. A first meeting of creditors took place Dec. 11 in Campbell River. In a copy of the list of creditors, one of the unsecured creditors is CISAA Forestry LLP which is operated by the Tseshaht First Nation.
The company is shown as being owed $306,588. The Tseshaht are the third largest creditor behind the Canadian Imperial bank of Commerce and Island Timberlands respectively. Pallan owes more that $15 million to its creditors: $711,000 to secured creditors; the remainder to unsecured. The
Tseshaht is listed as an unsecured creditor. Repeated requests for interviews with Tseshaht First Nation Chief Councillor Hugh Braker weren’t returned. Senior managers warned tribal officials not to do business with Pallan, former Tseshaht CEO Cindy Stern said. Stern has more than 30 years of experience
in the forest industry. She also served as CEO of Tseshaht for more than five years. According to Stern, former forestry manager Rob Hunter drew up a request for proposals for some forestry work. The RFP was initially awarded to TimberWest, but the company couldn’t fulfill all of the terms of the contract. Pallan
was recommended to do the work and Stern advised against it. When asked who she advised not to go with Pallan, Stern said “You’ll have to ask the administration that question.” Hunter left Tseshaht in May. Stern left in June. The final decision to go with Pallan was made later. “I’m not comfortable commenting about
decisions that were made after I left,” Stern said. Pallan initially tried to restructure the company last fall, even appointing accounting firm KPMG to act as a receiver, but the plan broke down and subsequent bankruptcy proceedings started.

A pregnant woman and her two young sons escaped serious injury after being hit by a pickup truck while crossing the intersection at 10th Avenue and Roger Street. Emergency personnel were called to the intersection at approximately 9:45 p.m. on Saturday night, RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said. A 26-year old woman and her sons, ages six and eight, were crossing Roger Street in a crosswalk with the green light. The 81-year old truck driver didn’t see the trio and hit them as he was turning left onto Roger Street from 10th

Coffee invoices have prompted the city’s audit committee to ask city staff to review mayor and council’s spending policies The request was made at the audit committee meeting on Feb 24. The committee consists of chair Hira Chopra, and Couns. Dan Washington and Jack McLeman. According to Chopra, council is concerned about accusations from members of the public and other councillors that Mayor John
Douglas is claiming every cup of coffee he buys when he meets with constituents, staff, or city council. In 2013, Douglas submitted more than a dozen invoices for as little as $1.67 for the javas. The amounts are over and above mayor and councillors’ annual stipends. Douglas isn’t doing anything wrong, Chopra said. The expenses are already covered by councillors and the mayor in the expense portion of council stipends. “We can only make recommendations, not set policy, so we want
more clarity on this one,” Chopra said. The audit committee’s concerns are news to Douglas, he said. “I haven’t heard any concerns like that from the audit committee,” he said. Douglas said he spoke to a similar issue when it was raised at council a couple of months ago. Douglas would neither agree or disagree that the committee’s action was heavy handed, and that they could have just asked him not to submit anymore claims for coffee.

Low income folks left out Crown jewel on table in Cariboo The recent StatsCan report trumpeting a 44.5 per cent increase in the worth of Canadians has left many, mostly lowerincome Canadians, scratching their heads. According to StatsCan, the net worth of Canadian families jumped to $243,800 in 2012 from $168,700 in 2005. In British Columbia, the median net worth of families is pegged at $344,000. The statistics certainly paint a rosy picture for the Canadian middle class. What most headlines avoid are the statistics for the people in the top and bottom 20 per cent. In 1999, the median net worth of individuals in the bottom 20 per cent was $1,300, while that of individuals in the top 20 per cent was $763,700. In 2012, the median net worth of the bottom 20 per cent was $1,100, a drop of 15.4 per cent from 1999. By contrast, the median net worth of the top 20 per cent in 2012 was $1,380,000, an increase of 80.7 per cent. The report attributes the increase in median net worth for the higher quintiles to above-average increases in real estate values. This explains why the lower quintile has not seen a dramatic increase in their net worth: they can’t afford to own real estate, much less now than in 1999. The headlines may say Canadians are better off in 2012 than they were several years ago, but the reality is too many Canadians are actually worse off. The disparity will continue to exist until an effective jobs plan is put in place, which includes improving access to affordable day care and eventually affordable housing. — Penticton Western News

And Alphonse makes it clear this mysterious environmental problem will be solved once he and his fellow chiefs have control of the resource. A Supreme Court of Canada ruling on aboriginal title is required to settle this. If some limited form of title is at last defined for the treaty-less majority of B.C., or at least Tsilhqot’in territory, the fate of the mine may become clear. Conventional wisdom on this is that the mining company didn’t try hard enough to establish a working relationship with the Tsilhqot’in. For his part, Taseko CEO Russell Hallbauer says the chiefs refused to meet with him, which isn’t surprising from a group that doesn’t recognize the B.C. forests ministry either. I want to express a public thank you to Cindy Sjoholm for the many years she successfully ran the Bread of Life. And by successfully, I mean enhanced the lives of hundreds of people. More than just providing nutrition, Cindy empowered, encouraged and at times defended the BOL patrons. I am a physician who does a clinic at the BOL most Fridays for the past six years. I have witnessed Cindy achieve remarkable results. She provided leadership, mentorship, and guidance with compassion, strength and fairness. The high regard and respect awarded to Cindy by the BOL patrons was earned through clemency and justness. Cindy had a finger on the pulse of the BOL, and if the beat fluttered or skipped a beat, her experience and credibility with the patrons frequently saved the day. The Bread of Life, and Port Alberni, were lucky to have her as executive director for
all those years, and I wish her the best in the future..

Shortly after the passage of BC Liberal Bill 29 in January 2002, the Salvation Army used this piece of legislation to terminate its unionized care staff (Hospital Employees’ Union) at their Victoria Sunset Lodge care facility. The majority of those employees were women, many the primary wage earner for their family and/ or the head of a single parent family. All had provided many years of faithful service, may 20 years or more. Why? To save money by hiring new workers into part-time jobs at lower wages. Now history repeats itself as the Salvation Army takes advantage of weak labour laws in this province and fires its unionized staff (BC Government and Service Employees’ Union) at their Victoria recycling centre. It’s not as though these workers were
making high wages: at $13.53 per hour, they are would still be living at or below the poverty level for Victoria. But now the work will be done by non-union staff at a, presumably, lower wage. Again, a number of these dedicated employees have given over 20 years of service to this organization who prides itself on “generat[ing] funds to help low income families and individuals”. In both cases, the impact of losing their jobs is devastating. Some will lose more than just a job: some will lose their homes and perhaps even their families if they are not able to support them. Claiming that this is merely a business decision is not good enough for an employer who wants to claim good works and Christian charity as its reason for being. There are many fine organizations dedicated to helping the less fortunate among us. The Salvation Army does not appear to be one of them.

The city’s budget is tentatively lighter after council pared it down by more than $1 million. Council shaved the budget items from various departments at a pair of special meetings over the past 10 days. The final budget must be passed by May 15. The highest ticket item councillors tentatively shelved was $500,000 meant for development of the former plywood
site. Some councillors had a difference of opinion with Mayor John Douglas about the matter. “I agree with the beach. But we don’t have a vision and I don’t agree with putting in another half million dollars,” Coun. Jack McLeman said. The city should consider soliciting help from service groups to improve the beach, Coun. Cindy Solda said. Douglas disagreed, however. “The property sat for 20 years and all we did was pollute it,” he said, further calling
the move a “grave error”. Councillors also moved to cut the $250,000 slated for the Harbour Quay clock tower repair. The clock tower isn’t in danger of falling over, and postponing the work will give officials time to decide what’s going to happen with the quay, Coun. Jack McLeman said. Council also removed $200,000 from the fire department’s budget. The money was in the 2015 budget to replace the department’s tanker truck.

Also, a motion was passed that would see $200,000 transferred from the Land Sale Reserve fund to the engineering department, where it will be earmarked for road improvements. And the SPCA
will see a five per cent increase to its budget stand. The extra funds are to help the organization cope with additional duties which include handling dangerous dog complaints, and with a too-many-cats per household bylaw. The SPCA is also expected to handle chickens under a new chicken bylaw. The birds won’t be housed in a new $5,000 coop, but will be brought to a farm instead. forced School District 70 to make the move. Three scenarios were assembled by district staff and some trustees. The first scenario garnered the most feedback at public information sessions last month, trustee Rosemarie Buchanan said. The first scenario involves closing Wood, Gill and Eighth Avenue elementary schools; re-configuring the remaining schools to K-7; re-purposing Wood to be part of Alberni District Secondary School, which would be converted to Grades 8-12. Two other scenarios would see closures and reconfigurations done over two and three years. Alberni Elementary would become an allFrench school. Moving VAST and the school board office to Eighth Avenue is also part of the plan. “I’ve heard people say that there should have been more than
out,” she said. Buchanan kicked around the idea of all elementary schools going K-7, the high school 8-12 and closing the middle schools, but the suggestion didn’t go anywhere. Elementary schools are already made for elementary age children. “Remember what a job it was to move the old high school to the new,” Buchanan said. “Well, the logistics of converting middle schools to elementary schools will be huge.” If anything, trustees are dealing with a better informed public. “People are much clearer this year about understanding that we’re not in this position because we’re bad managers,” she said. “We’re in this position because we’ve been handed a bunch of new bills that we’re expected to pay out of the existing budget.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Fraser lauds Literacy Alberni
Alberni-Pacific Rim MLA Scott Fraser applauded the efforts of Literacy Alberni executive director Charmead Schella and her staff during Monday’s session at the legislature in Victoria. “I’ve become one of their biggest fans,” Fraser said before defending funding institutions like Literacy Alberni receive from the provincially regulated Decoda Literacy Solutions. The government is toying with the idea of cutting Decoda’s funding, which for the Alberni Valley could mean cuts of up to $35,000 a year, Schella said. “We as provincial legislators need to recognize the obvious,” Fraser told his colleagues. “Our continued support for these programs is essential.”
RCMP arrest five in raid
Five people are facing a series of drug charges after police took down a drug house located two blocks from Alberni Elementary School last month. Acting on a tip from the public, Port Alberni RCMP raided a home in the 4400-block of Beaufort Street on Feb. 26, RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said in a press release. Police seized a significant quantity of powdered and crack cocaine, methamphetamine and prescription painkillers from five people in the home. Other evidence showed that the suspects were making crack cocaine on site, Allan said. Police are recommending charges for possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled substance against all five people.
Canal Beach needs stewards
Port Alberni City Council will look for assistance from service clubs to fund improvements at Canal Beach, instead of spending $500,000 that was included in the 2014-15 budget. Mayor John Douglas disagreed with the idea, saying cutting funding is “a grave error”.

Kayla Aolick of Port Alberni found independence last year when she picked up Shadow, a seizure guide dog, through the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. Now, she wants to make sure someone else can have the same opportunity that she was given. Aolick has planned a fundraising dinner dance for Saturday, March 22 at the Italian Canadian Centre on Sixth Avenue. “I want to help provide another service dog for a Canadian with a disability,” says Aolick, a brain cancer survivor who still suffers from seizures. “One family here is going to get two

Driving through the mountain canyons back from Granada to Malaga was a real treat. The countryside is rustic and beautiful and the twisty roads sublime. The base GLA never set a wheel wrong and the 7-speed duel-clutch automatic can be left in economy, sport or manual for each driving situation. All GLA models come with standard AWD and this system can detach the rear wheels and drive in FWD for better economy but switches seamlessly back when more traction or cornering capability is required, plus Dynamic Cornering Assist applies just a small amount of brake force to the inside wheel when cornering to aid in the process. The 45 AMG takes things to a completely new level. The 2.0L 4-cylinder is hand assembled and pumps out a whopping 355hp and 332 lb.-ft. of torque. The 7-speed transmission and AWD system have been adapted by AMG to deliver a go-cart like drive that is so reassuring and potent that it makes the driver look and feel fantastic. Cornering is effortless and the bigger wheels and lowered suspension give great feedback but it is not jarring. Verdict Mercedes Benz is enabling more people to access its brand with smaller less expensive vehicles. Confessions of a Curber It happened just after the last flood. TThe winter beat records for snowfall, and springtime saw serious seriou flooding. Basements filled, streets were running with water, and cars were left to float and sink. One day, I walked past a junk yard and saw, what I thought, was a relatively r normal car.

After a night in the garage with a heater and a little scrubbing, I posted an ad on Craigslist: “2004 black Toyota Corolla for sale. No longer need, bought new car. No room in garage – need to sell ASAP!!! Few scratches, otherwise in great condition. Call cell and we’ll talk price.” Thirty minutes later I got a call from a sixteen-year old kid – a little younger than my son. We decided to meet at the local mall at about 6:00. I wonder if his parents knew what he was up to. I arrived at 6:20, telling him I was in a great rush as I had to pick my son up from soccer practice. Turns out he played, too. After some soccer gossip, we got down to business. I knew that a kid his age just wanted a ride to show off to his friends, so we spent little time on the details. I told him the car was in perfect condition and was never in any accidents. “No problems as far as I know,” I said. The kid was sold. He trusted me. I never gave him my full name, and he never gave me his. He gave me the cash, I gave him the car. All was good. I was on my way. A few days later, I saw a TV program that talked about flood damaged vehicles. Apparently, flooding can damage the computer systems, which control things like the brakes and steering. And flood vehicles can’t be registered or insured. Who knew? My mind immediately went to the kid I sold the vehicle to. I felt a twinge of guilt. Then my eyes darted to my stash of cash. Two weeks later, I had another car up for sale. Stay tuned!

“If you’re talking invasive species, that includes weeds on farmers’ fields. That is a multi-billion dollar market. And it would be nice to get away from chemicals,” said Flanagan, a retired biotechnology professor from the University of Alberta. “Kudzu is a good example of a species that could be controlled. They need a species they can monetize the technology around, and kudzu allows that. But once the technology is in place, the applications are limitless. It can be used on any plant species any place in the world.” Flanagan said the likely business path for Cotyledon is licensing the technology to a larger company, which could take on regulatory hurdles. “It gets (Cotyledon) a revenue stream and allows them to
get onto the next technology. They’ve got a lot of ideas. This is the first one,” she said. “But they’ve got to prove the concept and prove to the world they are capable of this.” Martyn Ward, an industrial technical advisor for the NRC’s Industrial Research Assistance Program, which helps fund technology startups, said the Cotyledon project is intriguing and that Tuttle and Woodfin “appear to know their subject matter very well.” “If they succeed, there are plenty of opportunities for controlling invasive species,” said Ward, who is based at the NRC office on Observatory Hill, a property with its fair share of broom. “If they develop the technology and then find a channel to market it, which is always a challenge, they could do very well.”

THE ARTS Two events underscore the message that International Women’s Day brings to the Alberni Valley this Saturday, March 8. Art Matters Society presents a One Billion Rising Event starting at 1 p.m. at Char’s Landing. Rise for Justice— dance, release and rise up for an hour at Char’s, and honour the missing and murdered women of Canada. At 7 p.m., join host Wendy Kerr for In Praise of Women, an evening of entertainment at the Italian Canadian Centre on Sixth Avenue. The Rollin Art Centre’s next art exhibit begins March 11th with local landscape/seascape artist Lorian Ovenden, known as Dianna. Ovenden will showcase her collection of landscapes and seascapes in oils. Originally from England, Ovenden and her husband moved to Port Alberni five years ago. “Relocating to such a beautiful place inspires me,” she says. Join her for refreshments in the gallery on Saturday, March 15 from 1–3 p.m.
Books urgently needed for sale
The book bin at the Rollin Art Centre is low and we need your help in making this year’s annual fundraiser book sale a success. The Rollin Art Centre is accepting gently used books, DVDs, CDs and puzzles for their annual book sale, which takes place on May 10. Unfortunately we cannot accept any National Geographics, encyclopedias, Reader’s Digest condensed books or textbooks. Drop books at the Rollin Art Centre, inside, under the staircase in the wooden box. This is one of the Community Arts Council’s biggest fundraisers. Thank you for your continued support.

Community band needs members
The Alberni Valley Community Band is seeking new members.
All wind and brass instruments are welcome. The band is a concert band presently composed of sixteen adult musicians assisted by two students. It plays a variety of music arranged for concert bands; from marches and selections from the classics, to themes from Broadway shows

The Centennial Belles are presenting two fashion shows at Echo Centre on Saturday, April 5 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Proceeds are going to help children with cancer: James Albrecht, Brett Wasylyniuk, Carmen Steinbach and their families. The Wizard of Oz has been so popular in Port Alberni that Portal Players Dramatic Society will play one extra performance on Thursday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available now at the Capitol Theatre box office on Argyle Street at Fourth Avenue or by calling 250-723-1195. o you have digestive or bowel problems, such as bloating, gas, indigestion, diarrhea or constipation? Are you aware that certain types of bacteria can be very important for gut health? There are foods in a well-balanced, varied diet that can help support favourable digestion. The health of the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) can be a main factor in affecting illness and long-term diseases. Conditions such as intestinal bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticular disease, and colon cancer can be linked to environmental factors, such as diet (over the long term) and lifestyle. Recently, research

Probiotics come from fermented items and foods that have live culture, such as yogurt, kefir and tempeh. The word ‘probiotics’ literally means to promote life and refers to a substance that stimulates the growth of microorganisms, especially those with beneficial properties (such as those of the gastro-intestinal flora). Studies indicate that probiotics may be helpful for various indications, including for people experiencing diarrhea related to antibiotic use, and other causes. Also, keeping the right balance of good versus bad bacteria in the GI tract, in general, can help prevent other bowel issues, such

as bloating, gas, indigestion, diarrhea and constipation. In addition, plant-based foods containing fibre are critical for optimal, long-term digestive health. These foods have been referred to as ‘prebiotics’, which are non-digestible carbohydrates that act as food for the live probiotics to thrive on in the GI tract. Many prebiotics are found in fibrerich foods, such as whole grains, starchy vegetables, legumes, whole wheat
and fruit. This is an important health reason to ensure good variety in your daily meals. Unnecessarily restricting whole grains and other fibrous, carbohydraterich foods may not be good for your longterm digestive well being. By pairing prebiotics and probiotics together in meals, a beneficial environment can be created for the good bacteria to thrive. For example, eating a banana with yogurt offers

When asked for a great (and somewhat unusual) book, the first title that springs to mind is the Artemis Fowl series by Irish author Eoin Colfer. First in the series is Artemis Fowl, which grabbed my attention for its unusual take on the main character. Unlike most books in which the main character is also the hero, here young Artemis is the villain of the story. The last in the line of the Fowl criminal dynasty, he has had to grow up beyond his twelve years after the disappearance of his father, Artemis the first. A criminal mastermind, millionaire, and genius, young Artemis turns to crime to take care of his family with the aid of his faithful companion/bodyguard Butler. Enter the fairies. Yes, you read that correctly. In this book about criminals and their exploits, fairies are a force to be reckoned with. But don’t think fairytale fairies, these little sprites are armed and dangerous. With cunning plans galore, the Lower Elements Police reconnaissance Unit (or LEPrecon for short) out in full force, flatulent kleptomaniac dwarves, and one metric ton of gold hanging in the balance, the action never ceases. It is also rumored that a movie adaptation is forthcoming from Disney. Suitable for readers 10 and up, this is an adventure sure to please anyone. And keep an open mind about Artemis; he might be more of a hero than you think.

Also, moving daily with walking, or other forms of physical activity will help with digestion, plus overall health and wellness.

Parks and Recreation facilities can be an excellent resource for a variety of activities to suit the whole family. Maintaining bowel health by eating a wide variety of whole foods, daily exercise and water can help with long-term health and prevention of bowel diseases. After sixteen years together, Little Bear was gone. From the time he entered our lives, he was the embodiment of the Hollywood Jack Russell. He lived hard and fast winning people over with an adorable face and an impish grin. And could he ever show off. He could jump up, all fifteen pounds and twelve inches of him and pound his front paws into my chest until it hurt. We were inseparable and I thought no human and animal could get closer. Then ten years ago, he developed glaucoma and had to have his eyes removed. For fourteen nights, I slept with my arms around him to stop him from pulling the eye socket stitches out. After the surgery, I became his eyes and he became my heart. Before his retirement as Canine Chiropractic Coach, when people left my adjustment room, they would visit him on the way out for encouragement. We were a team. What I couldn’t adjust with my hands, he took care of. It always amazed me when he set aside his normally frenetic personality to meet the needs of practice members. Even on the day of his passing, Little Bear didn’t stop teaching. As I was adjusting “Jim”, I told him that my dog lay upstairs on his last legs. Jim was a successful but rough and grizzled man, hardened by the not so easy experiences of the self-made business man. His eyes surprisingly softened as he told me about his dogs. I went upstairs and carried Little Bear down to meet him. Lianne, Jim and I shared tears as he related how his dogs helped change his life. My respect for him grew as his tough veneer came off and it became clear he was man enough to share all of himself. We exchanged a real moment followed by a real hug (needless to say Jim was not a hugger!), all thanks to Little Bear. Two hours later, Little Bear took his last breath. He had been my greatest teacher without even knowing it. He helped me set new standards so that I could become a kinder, more loving person. Thank you Little Bear, you will not be forgotten. Minor hockey teams make B.C.s; fundraising begins Three Port Alberni rep hockey teams have made it to their respective provincial championships later this month. A fundraiser has been set up for this Friday, March 7 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Alberni Cap-It, in the Alberni Toyota
complex. The teams are holding a joint bottle drive, hot dog sale, car wash and bake sale. Bottles can be dropped off at Alberni Cap-It on Friday. The Bantam A Bulldogs travelled to Oak Bay last Saturday to play their second

As of Tuesday, the Bulldogs were down one game in the best of seven series after a 3-0 loss to the Grizzlies in Victoria on Monday night. Wagner three-peats Hornets spank Black WRESTLING: | Alberni Wrestling’s Jesse Wagner wins his third B.C. championship.
The ADSS Armada Boys and Girls wrestling teams returned home Sunday with lots of hardware and accolades from the BC Secondary Schools Wrestling Championships in Prince George. Senior Jesse Wagner won his fifth B.C. medal and became only one of a handful of high school wrestlers in B.C. to ever win three provincial titles as he took his 54 kg weight class. The Armada placed third this year in the Aggregate race while the Boys were also third overall. Wagner was unstoppable in Prince George and was an honourable mention for the Most Outstanding Male wrestler at the 2014 BC’s. He rolled over his opposition in every match on rout to the final where he met a very tough Torrey Toribio of John Oliver Secondary. Toribio had beaten Wagner at an event several weeks ago
