FOR THE SAKE OF THE ENVIRONMENT... WATCH WHAT YOU EAT! When we think about agriculture, we think about halting deforestation, about cultivation methods involving more technology, about the organization of Canadian farming in order to reduce the amount of food products which travel huge distances to get here... and how we, as individuals, can participate in this process. This thematic week will encourage us to change the food we put on our tables on a daily basis!
trial farms are responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions, due mainly to transportation. Here is something to make us all think about what we can do to limit our carbon footprint and reduce global warming.
Indeed, food is one of our main relationships with the environment. As a tree feeds from the soil where its roots develop, human beings should procure their food from the area in which they live... this individual gesture can have an enormous impact on your local community. It is very easy to limit or refuse to consume fruits and vegetables grown out of season, in heated greenhouses and transported by plane. We can also choose to support a local farm where the meat will be of top quality because all the ingredients used to feed the livestock come directly from local farms. We can also avoid purchasing meat which comes from large industrial farms. Base your decision on a recent report which estimates that indus-

The “blue” gold rush! According to Environment Canada, water dripping at a rate of one drop per second will lead to annual wastage of approximately 10,000 litres of water. This is why it’s so important to put the celebrated “3R’s” rule into practice: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Here are a few other ideas that can help conserve that precious commodity, water: • Replacing an old shower head with a new model will help you save up to 9.5 litres of water per minute. • Turning off the faucet when brushing teeth, shaving or washing hands, for example, avoids wasting water uselessly. • Repair all undesirable water leaks. • Update faucets by installing aerators that reduce water consumption by approximately 25%. • Old aerators can be replaced with low-flow models. • Save up to half the quantity of water used per load of laundry by exchanging a traditional washing machine for a high-efficiency model, such as a front-loader. • Shop around for a dishwasher with a water-saver and save a similar amount of water as high-efficiency washing machines that require 60 to 102 litres compared with 148 to 212 litres of water in traditional appliances. Before getting out your credit card to pay for a new appliance, check for an Energuide label and compare its energy efficiency with other models. This way you’ll be helping to conserve our most precious natural resource.
Energy-efficient lighting: Let there be light! Did you know that an energy saving light bulb will last an average of 10,000 hours, which translates into nine years, at a rate of three hours per day? Another interesting fact: Energy savings can reach 75% compared to incandescent bulbs. As floor lamps are particularly wasteful of energy, this type of light fixture should be the first to be replaced. According to Natural Resources Canada, replacing a regular light bulb with a compact fluorescent one bearing the Energy Star symbol in every household would be the equivalent of taking 66,000 cars off our roads! To choose the right energy saving light bulb, apply the 4 to 1 rule: All you have to do is divide the number of watts on a regular bulb by 4, meaning that one efficient bulb consumes approximately a quarter of the energy consumed by an ordinary one. This winter, don’t forget to choose DEL exterior Christmas lights to reduce your electricity consumption during this time of year when demand is at its highest. These lights consume 90% less energy on average than ordinary bulbs and last seven times longer — a real gift to our environment! The international symbol of energy efficiency, Energy Star, found on some light fixtures, helps consumers make the right choices when shopping. To obtain more information on this subject, visit the Energy Star Website at energystar. gc.ca. By consuming less we make a collective investment in energy efficiency and the well-being of future generations.
