Trail Regional Airport lands new manager Tasks include developing objectives for the facility BY VALERIE ROSSI Times Staff
The direction of the Trail Regional Airport (YZZ) will now be led by its new full-time manager Don Gouland. The former Calgary, Alta., resident starts at the City of Trail's newly-acquired landing strip this week. The certified commercial pilot from Aero Academy in London, Ont., holds an Honours Bachelor Degree in Business Administration and Psychology and experience in various aviation-based positions with companies like Viking Air Limited, Diamond Aircraft Industries Inc. and Lake Central Air Services. “I am thrilled about this opportunity and look forward to being part of the redevelopment team,” said Goulard in a news release. “Moving forward, I believe the DON Trail airport needs GOULAND to operate as a viable business; Generating revenue in order to support ongoing operational costs and providing quality customer service are the key factors that will lead to success. “I also look forward to looking at ways to maximize new opportunities that the airport and other cityowned lands may present.” His first order of business will be developing a set of objectives for the facility and dealing with any issues that resulted from last month’s Transport Canada audit, which will be reviewed by staff and presented to council before it's made public. Planning for a potential new terminal building will also be on the agenda once Trail city council has considered funding for its 2014 budget. See NO, Page 2

SLOPES FOR HOPE
Fight against cancer going to new heights BY VALERIE ROSSI Times Staff
Snow enthusiasts are invited to strap into their bindings and ski or board the vertical height of Mount Everest in a fight against cancer. The Canadian Cancer Society is teaming up with Red Mountain Resort and local organizers to present the second annual Slopes for Hope, a ski-a-thon event held March 16 that invites participants to ski 29,092 feet in one day (either individually or as a team effort). “It is unique in the fact that is is a winter enthusiast event inviting skiers, snowboarders and all people who love to play in the snow to join the fight against cancer as we take it to the slopes,” said Allison McCarthy, annual giving coordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society’s B.C. and Yukon division. “The purpose of this event is to raise funds and awareness for the Canadian Cancer Society in the pursuit of our mission: the eradication of cancer and enhancement of the quality of life for those living with cancer.” Slopes for Hope takes place at various ski hills throughout B.C., including Hemlock, Powder King, Kimberley, Whitewater and Red. The fundraiser just took place at Whitewater last Saturday and prior to that in Kimberley Feb. 8, where $40,000 was raised. The event started in Rossland in 2012, when about $3,500 was given, but took a hiatus last year. McCarthy hopes to make this an annual event at Red with a $5,000 goal in mind for this year. Participants are asked to fundraise prior to the event

Though School District 20 still has fewer kindergarten students enrolling than Grade 12 students leaving, the birthing rate is on the rise and enrolment is set to follow suit, according to the superintendent of schools. Based on an increased number of births in the area in 2010, 2011 and 2012, the district expects to have over 300 kindergarten students in 2015 for the first time in Greg Luterbach's nine years with the district. “We're pretty much exactly where we should be based on Interior Health Authority's birth data projections the school district does,” said Luterbach, after the first week of kindergarten registration closed last week. SD20 is currently sitting at 218 enrolled newcomers but Luterbach is confident the number will bump up to match the predicted 270-280 students expected for the 2014/2105 school year. The district looks at the number of births in the area and then decides how that will impact enrolment five years later. Further down the line, early enrolment figures are analyzed to project where the district will actually sit at the end of September. “We are currently doing some analysis of the data around students who live in the region but are home schooled, schooled through distributed learning or choose to attend the Francophone or independent schools,” Luterbach admitted. This subject is being explored since the end of September’s enrolment numbers dropped by about 100 students than projected last spring. Families who have children turning five years old between Jan. 1, 2014 and Dec. 31, 2014 are encouraged to register their children in their catchment area school right away to ensure placement.
