ARTHRITIS KNEE PAIN?

Interview with Dr. MacKenzie, D.C. from the Spine and Joint Institute on how he is helping arthritis patients by using a high powered Class IV deep tissue laser in Coquitlam. Interview with: Dr. Scott Mackenzie, DC

Subject: How he treats arthritic knee pain. Interviewer: How does your treatment for arthritis differ from conventional medical treatment?

Dr. Mackenzie: That’s a great question but I think it will be better to answer it in two parts. The first part I will list the available treatment options. They should happen in this order because they are supposed to use less risky and less invasive treatments first before moving on to the more dangerous treatments such as surgery. 1) Physical Therapy

2) Drugs – 1) MDs prescribe pain killers such as Celebrex or an over the counter drug such as Tylenol or Advil

3) Cortisone (steroid) injections 4) Surgery – The patient will be referred to have arthroscopic surgery, knee replacement.

I am always amazed when patients tell me they don’t like to take drugs or get surgery and then keep going back to their MD for help. I think they expect to get one of those above treatments period! No matter how many times patients keep going back. Now the difference between my Class IV Laser and conventional treatments offer is very easy to explain. Laser has zero documented side effects. That’s right I said zero. It is very safe because it is non-toxic and noninvasive. Excluding physical therapy, all conventional treatments have many potential dangerous side effects. We have all heard the TV commercials for drugs and the list of side effects takes longer than the actual advertisement of the drug.

The other major difference with

other conventional treatments are they only treat symptoms of the disease, they do not provide a cure. All of the treatments mask the symptoms of the disease. This means you, the patient, would have to continue taking therapy, drugs and shots for the rest of your life. Meanwhile the disease of arthritis continues to deteriorate because you can’t feel it getting worse. If you think surgery is a cure, think again. Joint replacements only last about 10 years. Then they need to be replaced.

What makes Class IV laser therapy different is that it is safe and designed to stimulate the body to heal through a process known as photobioistimulation. The photons in the laser are absorbed by the damaged cells in your body allowing them to repair and regenerate into healthy cells. Once this process is complete the damaged tissue is repaired into healthy tissue allowing long term pain relief. In other words the laser addresses the problem so the pain goes away and most of my patients do not need to keep coming back once their treatments are complete. Interviewer: Do patients need to consult with their family doctor first before doing laser treatments?

Dr. Mackenzie: No. Patients do not need a referral to seek laser treatment. If you want advice on taking a certain drug then of course go ask your MD, but asking an MD on treatment they do not use in their office and do not specialize in does not make sense. Plus MDs are busy professionals that don’t have time to answer questions about

treatments they don’t provide.

Let me add one more thing to this because this is important. When patients are concerned with spending money out of their pocket for my treatment this is what I tell them. Imagine three months from now you’re out of pain and you’re back doing things you haven’t done in a long time. Do you think you’re out of pocket to get your life back?

Interviewer: What success rate would you say you get with patients using your laser? Dr. Mackenzie: The only way to know for sure is to do a scientific study that is double blinded and placebo controlled. I have never done anything like that so I can’t say exactly but what I can say is that I am surprised when a patient does not respond to my treatment. There are some patients who don’t respond but it is a small percentage. An important thing I tell patients that none of my patients get worse.

Register by calling 604-683-7151 or on-line at www.healthservices.gov.bc.ca Under Fair PharmaCare, your family is responsible for the cost of your prescription drugs until you have paid your full deductible. After reaching your deductible, PharmaCare pays the majority of eligible prescription costs and you are responsible only for a co-payment. Your co-payments continue until the annual maximum based on your family’s income is reached. After that, PharmaCare pays the full amount of all eligible prescription costs. The monthly deductible payment option allows you to spread the cost of the deductible over the full year. This option benefits families who have high prescription costs by allowing them to distribute their prescription drug costs over the course of the year and receive PharmaCare assistance with all eligible prescription costs. Dying without a will can turn a tragedy into a disaster.

Donald A. Drysdale

Don has a busy Wills and Estates practice. He also teaches courses on the subject of real estate, wills and estates.

Preparing a thorough, well-planned will is one of those critical things in life that too many people put off until it’s too late. We all die, but it’s totally unnecessary to reach this point unprepared. Passing on without a clear statement of what is to happen to all you’ve built makes an already tragic situation even worse. I’ve helped thousands of families develop a thorough, tax effective estate plan. If you’d like my help, please call.

Patrons on the Homebound Services Program may place reserves on materials of their choice or allow the Community Services Librarian to select materials for them. A profile of reading interests and a list of materials read or desired is kept for each Homebound patron. This information is confidential and available only to Homebound Services staff. Low Vision Resources The library offers the following resources for people with impaired vision:

Large Print Materials Many popular fiction and non-fiction titles are available in large print. We attempt to purchase new and bestseller large print books published simultaneously with the regular print.

Audiobook Collection The Poirier Branch has a collection of audiobooks on cassette tapes, Daisy Book format and MP3, available to users who are visually or physically challenged and cannot read regular print material. This collection is funded in conjunction with Public Library InterLINK, and users must sign an eligibility form to use this collection. Daisy Books and MP3 format books can be played on Daisy Players, personal computers and DVD players. A second collection of books on cassette tapes and CDs is available to the general public at both branches. Deposit Collections The library invites care centres and nursing homes to take advantage of our Deposit Collection Service. Under this program, large print books are selected by the librarian, checked out to the care centres, and then delivered. At the end of 4 months, the books are exchanged for a new collection.
