A rally showing solidarity with Abbotsford’s homeless drew about 200 people to city hall on Monday, despite the cold and falling snow. The event was organized by community members after city council denied a rezoning application to allow Abbotsford Community Services (ACS) to build a 20-bed housing facility for homeless men or men at risk of homelessness. Attendees brought signs that read “stop the insanity” and “everyone deserves respect.” The ACS proposal failed due to a tie vote at last Monday’s council meeting. The councillors who voted in favour, Couns. Henry Braun, Patricia Ross, Moe Gill and Dave Loewen, were present at the rally. Braun spoke to the crowd, saying that despite the failed vote, “it is not the end, and we will not give up.” He addressed the homeless, saying that “we will continue to advocate for you until these 20 supportive units are constructed as a first step in

He said he was there to show his support for the cause and the need to address homelessness in Abbotsford. “Voting against the proposal was not a vote against the people.” He said the decision was “not to deny somebody something, it’s to wait for the better proposition.” A potential solution, which MacGregor raised at the council meeting, was the possibility of building the project on the former MSA Hospital site on McCallum Road, where Fraser Health has announced plans for a seniors’ campus of acre and a community health centre. The location of the project, which was announced in June 2013, was strongly opposed by the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ABDA) and the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, and was ultimately defeated by a tie vote at council on Feb. 17. Following the meeting, Mayor Bruce Banman said he voted against the proposal because the process was flawed due to a lack of neighbourhood consultation. “The process itself had a major flaw from early on. There is no doubt that the need (for housing) exists; however, the very neighbourhood that they wanted to place this in was never consulted until after the decision and the drawings and the designs had been made.” Though the city had been aware of the proposed site for years and helped select ACS as the proponent and its location for lowbarrier housing, Banman said that decision

Christian rapper TobyMac broke a single-night attendance record on Friday for the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC). His sold-out Hits Deep Tour had an attendance of 7,098, according to AESC general manager Jason Blumenfeld of Global Spectrum, which operates the centre. The AESC’s previous concert attendance record was held by country music artist Eric Church for his show in January 2013, when 6,826 people attended. “With 2014 being the fifth
anniversary of the (AESC), we couldn’t have asked for a better way to start off the year,” Blumenfeld said. “TobyMac delivered a fantastic performance and thrilled the audience all night.” In addition to TobyMac, the evening featured performances by Brandon Heath, Mandisa, Matthew West, Matt Maher and Capital Kings. TobyMac’s tour now heads south for dates in Washington, Oregon and Arizona before finishing with a March 2 show in San Jose, Calif.

Unable to find a new farm site, the founders of Joshua House Ministries are auctioning off their hand-raised animals. Richard and Angie Korkowski founded the farm-based recovery program on Fraser Highway in 2008. The couple helped men overcome addictions through caring for farm animals, until recently the landowner decided not to renew their lease. “When the guys come in from the streets, they’re very hard and callous, and they’re not very open. And when you’re looking at a baby kid goat or a baby calf that you have to feed every morning with a bottle ‌ it softens them,â€? said Richard. The percentage of
men staying clean after leaving one of the Joshua House homes in Abbotsford has dropped by nearly 10 points with the loss of access to the farm, said Richard. The Korkowskis have been searching for a new site, without success. They received a few leads for new land but none were what they needed. The couple has a target move-out date of March 15. They don’t need to vacate until 2015, but maintaining the farm costs $2,600 per month. “It’s not about profit, but it ends up being a drain on the ministry. Nobody has stepped forward to say, ‘You know what, we’ll help pay for it or we’ll help you find another farm,’� said Richard. “As each animal runs out of feed, we’re
selling it off.� The goats reached the end of their feed on Feb. 21, so they went to Fraser Valley Auctions the next day. Six years ago, the couple started the farm with just eight calves and 12 chickens. It grew quickly in that time to include goats and pigs.

The Royal Canadian Air Force’s (RCAF) 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron will conduct a search and rescue (SAR) exercise from now until Friday, Feb. 28 in Abbotsford and surrounding areas.  Capt. Trevor Reid, 19 Wing Comox public affairs officer, said residents can expect to see increased RCAF aircraft activity operating from the Abbotsford Airport during this period. The public might see SAR technicians parachuting under orange canopies from Buffalo aircraft in the vicinity of the airfield.  The purpose of the exercise is to maintain 442 Squadron’s ability to conduct a major SAR response for Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Victoria, as well as exercise its ability to work with partner organizations like the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA).

Decision results in inaction
With any controversial development or project, it seems inevitable that some opponents will complain of not being informed or consulted earlier. In the case of the Abbotsford Community Services (ACS) homeless supportive housing proposal, official notice was issued in June 2013. That timing was determined by BC Housing, which lifts the confidentiality lid when final details are in place and projects such as this are ready to proceed to the public process. Considering it took the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association and other opponents mere days after the announcement to issue vehement protest over the plan and eventually convince four civic politicians to vote against it, we wonder what difference earlier notification would have made, other than ACS possibly having fewer detailed answers to specific questions. Some would say time to find an alternate location, yet the provincial funding was not open-ended. It was specifically approved for this proposal, which relied on land being donated by ACS. Another site would have been a return to square one and more delay, which is where the issue now sits.
After council’s tie vote killed the housing project last week, the land came off the table, and we fear so has the money. A future alternative will require city-donated property and a different, more expensive operational budget, since another location is not going to be situated next to the support services required by the shelter occupants, available at ACS. The city was involved in the ACS proposal for years, beginning with a 2008 memorandum of understanding with the provincial government to create supportive housing. There were no surprises for the city here, and time was provided for public consultation as per BC Housing’s criteria. The process unfolded as it did with two previous similar facilities. Sources indicate Fraser Health response to the hope of relocating this project on the former MSA Hospital property on McCallum Road is not encouraging. Neither are recent words from BC Housing, which thinly veil exasperation with the City of Abbotsford. Closing the door on the ACS homeless housing proposal was an unfortunate decision resulting in more inaction – the impact of which will be seen and felt for years.
Time to think ‘weather’ before choosing Mark

Other Hand If there is one thing you can say about the weather we experience here in ‘“British Columbia by the sea,” it is changeable. One week it’s bitterly cold, another warm and wet, another with virtual whiteouts and blowing snow. Tuesday, following Monday’s incredibly treacherous driving conditions, was a magnificent ‘bluebird’ day. We experienced similar conditions during our own 2010 Winter Olympics, hauling Interior snow to the coast to make up for the lack supplied by Mother Nature, delaying events due to rain and fog. And we saw it again in Sochi. Yet for some reason the IOC persists in awarding “Winter” Games to coastal cities and countries. Vancouver, as we all know, sits on the 49th parallel. Sochi is on the 44th, which is
equivalent to the central coast of Oregon, and on Sunday, the 2018 event was awarded to Korea, which for the most part is south of the 36th latitude. That’s between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Yes, there are mountains behind all of these areas, and often they provide great skiing, but they are certainly never a guarantee. I can only imagine the heartbreak and disappointment for athletes who have committed their lives to years of training, only to see, thanks to spring-like weather conditions, their events cancelled. Granted, for those who compete inside arenas, it matters not where Olympics are held. As more and more sports are added to ski and snowboard hills, Winter Olympic locations seem to be chosen by the IOC based more on politics than practicality. However, regardless of the location and the ridiculously enormous cost of the Olympic Games, they do bring out the patriotic pride of a nation, and on occasion, vitriol. Both were amply displayed by Canada and the USA in hockey. Yet for all of that, each nation should be, and for the most part is, immensely proud
of their world-class athletes. For a ‘small’ nation, Canada has risen to the challenge with stunning success: 25 medals these games, 26 in 2010. In a way though, I’m happy the Games are over. No more late nights, or an early Sunday morning to watch Canada take

In fact, things got so normal Sunday afternoon I wished I was back in front of the TV. Returning home following the new car’s inaugural foray, its owner quietly said as I pulled up to the locked gate “You’re going to be mad!” And why, I asked …”Because I left the

Parked at the gate, I looked at the 10 inches of snow blanketing the landscape, and then at my shoes worn instead of boots to go shopping. My gate is non-climbable (not that you should ever climb gates anyway), as is my yard fence. That left me with a 30metre slog in snow up to mid-calf, socks soaked within the first couple of strides, to the field fence rails over which I could clamber. As I mounted the first rail and swung my leg over, an errant piece of wire snagged and ripped a 60-buck pair of jeans. I’m certain the burst of blasphemy startled the woman who just a little further down the road was taking pretty snowscene photos of up-until-then Sumas Mountain’s pastoral serenity. Once over two fences it was another 30metre wade back to the garage to recover the overlooked key and unlock the gate. If nothing else, the walk in the wet snow gave me an appreciation for what all the kids faced in Sochi over the past couple of weeks. markrushton@abbynews.com

A shill to business association Every elected official of Abbotsford that voted against the Rezoning for new housing project for homeless should face criminal charges. Need proof that facility will be good Many people may have spoke up for the ACS proposed low barrier housing (for the record, many spoke against it, too) but how many of those who were for it live near the proposed site. How many of those peoples lives will be affected if this project didn’t turn out to be as “great” as proponents said it would be? Many people who spoke were not even from this community. It is very easy to get behind something that has little or no actual affect on your life. It makes you feel good, it makes you a part of something, it gets you further involved in your church or whatever – bottom line is that it is easy. I could call these people GINIMBY’s (Glad it’s not in my backyard). For the people who live or own small businesses near this proposed facility it is much more
difficult. You need facts and solid evidence that this facility is going to be good thing. Because if it’s not, you and your family are the ones that will be suffering. I need assurances and unbiased proof that this proposed facility will be good for my family and my community. This is not fear, this is common sense and it does not make me selfish, self involved or uncaring. And finally... shame on Abbotsford Community Services and Abby council for not disclosing this proposal five years ago when planning began. Total Makeover run on March 8 Raises funds for hospital A walk/run to raise funds for the pediatric comfort fund at Abbotsford Regional Hospital takes place Saturday, March 8. The Total Makeover 4.4 km Walk/Run will be held at Mill Lake Park. Registration is at 9 a.m., and the walk begins at 9:30. The event is part of the Total Makeover Challenge, held by Go Fusion Fitness and starting out with 50 participants at the beginning of the year. The top 10 will be announced at the walk/ run and will move into round two of the competition, which will then be narrowed down to five before the winner is announced on May 14. The public is invited to join the walk/run and raise pledges. Anyone who raises $500 or more will have their name entered into a draw for a trip to two anywhere that WestJet flies. The school’s second annual gala involved kids displaying and selling works of art they created in class, with proceeds going to Children’s Hospital via the Team Miracle Maya initiative. One of the school’s families, the Ahujas, has pledged to raise $100,000 for the hospital to purchase equipment for open-heart surgery patients. Maya Ahuja, who turns four in June, was born with a congenital heart defect, and her parents, Karm and Gary, credit the team of doc-
tors and nurses at B.C. Children’s Hospital with her recovery. Earlier this year, Blue Jay Elementary raised more than $1,200 for the cause through a bottle drive and coin collection. Last year’s art gala raised $1,000 for the Run for Water, which supplies clean and accessible drinking water to children in Ethiopia. The Blue Jay art show was held for an hour in the afternoon and also ran for an hour on Thursday evening. Admission was by donation, and the sug-

In a simple square building tucked away in a corner of central Abbotsford, 120 people practise their swingouts, turns, and Charlestons on a cold January night. Nearly everyone is in sneakers or flats, and a few women wear the short flowing skirts characteristic of an earlier era. The Suburban Swing dance group has been around for 14 years in
Abbotsford, teaching Lindy Hop and East Coast swing with a fun and friendly attitude. It has recently become so popular that many people drive over an hour to get to the Sunday night practices. On one January night, the jazzy beats of the 1920s to ’50s fill the regular venue, the Abbotsford Social Activity Association (ASAA) hall. When instructors explain how to peck, dancers giggle. The move involves giving a dance partner a quick air
peck, a common Lindy Hop move. When participants try it, they break out in laughter. This happens a lot during the night. “When you walk in, you’re going to feel very welcome. People ask you to dance. Right away you get included with the whole group, no matter what your age is or status,” said Jason Warner, who owns the club alongside his wife Crystal. The club has seen its average participant numbers grow 25 per cent over

the last year. A record 300 people came out on Dec. 29, 2013. About 40 per cent of dancers are men. And while the event is all ages, the average age is 20. Warner started the swing dance club in 1999 when he was a criminology student at the University of the Fraser Valley. The first meetings were in the cafeteria. ASAA hall, their home for the past 13 years. The hall is a community dancing mecca, with ballroom, square, and line dancing meeting on other nights. Eager swing dancers come from all over, with only about half from Abbotsford. On a January night, there were people from Chilliwack, Mission, North Vancouver, and as far as Bellingham, Wash. Warner explains that while the Vancouver swing clubs compete against each other, Suburban Swing gets
everyone else – from Hope to Surrey to Sumas – who wants to try something fun. A threeday winter retreat for the end of February filled up with the maximum 80 people booked over a month prior. There also isn’t much else to do on a Sunday night, adds Warner. The well-respected club is very diverse, with people from all backgrounds, abilities, and ages mixed together. Warner now works as a correctional programs officer at Matsqui Institution. It’s not as strange a mix as it might seem, he says. He pulls his correctional background into
dancing, and vice versa. “My passion is working with people‌I like public speaking. I really like facilitating and helping people change their lives. So I think that’s partly what I do here (at Suburban Swing); a crossover of my correctional experience and my social experience.â€? In addition to the Sunday nights at ASAA hall, Warner also teaches swing dance at W. J. Mouat secondary in Abbotsford, and G.W. Graham secondary in Chilliwack. He dreams of the club growing large enough to have its own venue capable of holding 300 to 400 people.

Gardening Rhubarb is the hot new perennial vegetable that adds that tangy, tart flavour to dessert menus, sauces, fruit combos and compotes. It’s also hard to beat for pies and crumbles. Rhubarb is so very useful in our cooking and, yet, far too few are being grown in our gardens, even small-space ones. I mention this now because it’s an ideal time to plant rhubarb. Rhubarb is very hardy, even in the Prairies, so it will do well in our area. There are a number of good varieties. Crimson Cherry is a large red-stalked variety; strawberry is the thinnest red-stalked type; and Victoria is, perhaps,

the most well-known with large greenish/red stalks. All of these are great for the home garden. What many folks don’t know is rhubarb plants need to become established for at least a couple of years before you can begin to harvest. Most rhubarb varieties are sold as root chunks divided up into one or two eye shoots, but if you can find a well-established container-grown plant, so much the better. Plant rhubarb at the soil line so just the eyes or new shoots are barely above ground. You’ll need well-drained soil and raised beds are best. Working lots of well-rotted manure into the soil, and dipping the roots in a root booster or fish fertilizer solution will do wonders to give the plants a good start. If you set out more than one clump, keep them about three foot (one metre) apart. Once growing, keep feeding them, especially Continued on A20

When you harvest rhubarb, do not use a knife but rather pull the stalks away in a sideways motion to get a clean break. Leaving short bits on the plant can cause decay on the root. Remember that the leaves of a rhubarb plant are poisonous, so don’t eat the leaves and don’t put them in your compost. Rhubarb is a perennial and will thrive for many years, even tolerating light shade. In Europe, there is a whole industry built on forcing it early with pots and pails turned upside down overtop the plants to ensure harvesting three to four weeks earlier. If you have an established plant, you might begin this technique now. Rhubarb is such an easy plant to grow, and now is a perfect time to get them underway. Do give this tasty perennial a try.

Run for the Cure volunteers needed Run for the Cure takes place in Abbotsford every year, thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers who organize the event for the community. Last year, more than 1,500 walkers and runners in Abbotsford participated in the one- or five-kilometre event, promoting the importance of breast health and raising funds to support the cause. The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) and CIBC, sponsors and organizers, have already started planning for this year’s event, taking place Oct. 5, 2014. The CBCF is seeking a co-run director to lead the organizing committee. Run directors are leaders who work closely together to manage and empower a team of volunteers. The team of run directors supports fundraising, promotes breast health information, encourages

The coaching staff congratulates each one of the players for their outstanding dedication to the team as well as their behaviour on and off the field. Team Awards for the 2013 Season were won by the following players: Dion Pellerin, Alex Johnson, Reuben Reardon, Cameron Tomm, Nelson Lokombo, Elijah Falconer, Jacob Solano, Devin Cudmore, Evan Hampson, Coleton Barker, Carson Setter, Nik Thiessen, Miti Clark and Curtis Arnold. Well done boys.
The ELL classroom would like to recognize both Yixin Chen and and Mingze Gao. Both boys are carrying about 90% averages. They are great mentors and role models in the ELL classroom; always helping other students with their studies. Well done gentlemen.
WJ Mouat staff and students are proud to have been able to give back to the Abbotsford community this Christmas by supporting 9 families through the Christmas Bureau’s Adopt-a-Family program, providing Christmas food and gifts for families in need.

Once again, WJ Mouat entered two grade 10 teams in the Kwantlen Science Challenge. Our students competed against 24 other top schools from across the Lower Mainland in 5 areas: Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Agriculture and Engineering Design. To place in the top five is no easy feat, and requires that students do well in all five areas. This year WJ Mouat rose to the challenge placing second overall. Congratulations to: Rebecca Kehtler, Brody GriffeyKrist, Zohaib Nadeem, Navjot Bahga, Emma Van Tonder, Jasmine Khella, Josiah Plett, Aya Najim, Elsie Fu, Prabjot Ganda, Rebecca Kehtler, Jenny Li and Merrick Paq-Man.
Social Justice 12 students research and prepare action plans and this semester 53 students were silent for 12 hours (and did not use technology) to raise money for children in developing countries born with a cleft lip or palate. Each student that participated remained silent and did not use technology for 12 hours. The total amount raised was $6023.65, which works out to 25 life changing surgeries. Thank you to our friends and family who supported us!
Senior Football The varsity football team had an outstanding season, finishing with a 10 win, 3 loss record and making the AAA provincial semi-finals. The following earned special recognition and awards for their play: Maleek Irons, Levi Hua, Jake Firlotte, Akash Sandhu, Manpreet Chhina, Clovis Lumeka, Hunter Struthers, James Ginther and Matt McGregor. Athletic Forum W.J. Mouat Secondary hosted its first ‘All Athletes Forum’. Over 220 student athletes and their coaches participated and discussed what does it mean to wear a Mouat jersey/uniform and what are ways to build a positive team culture? Students reported out their thoughts at the forum and also provided their ideas in writing for the student committee that has been tasked with developing the ‘Student Athlete Pledge’. Thanks to the Mouat staff who led the charge in planning this event and special thanks to the students who participated!

ARTS Drama This year’s Upper Fraser Valley Drama Festival was held at WJ Mouat in December. Mouat presented two plays and took home the following honours: “Check Please: Take 3” won Overall Outstanding Production and Outstanding Technical Achievement. “Just Beyond the Trees” won Best Actor (Will Jogia), Best Supporting Actor (Pascal Reiners) Supporting Actor Honourable Mention (Connor Drysdale) and an Honourable Mention for Outstanding Design. Mouat will advance to the Provincials held at Douglas Collage in the spring. Be sure to come check it out if you missed the show and support our kids!!!

WJ Mouat staff and students sported their moustaches and attempts at moustaches to raise awareness and almost 475$ for prostate cancer research. The month long event culminated with a Tea Party where the Moustache of 2014 was crowned! Congrats to Mr. Bidal, second time ‘stache champion and thank you to all staff and students who participated, supported and tolerated those cookie dusters!

Competing close to home seemed to agree with the Mission and Abbotsford athletes at the Mission 2014 BC Winter Games. The Games, which brought together approximately 2,000 athletes, coaches and officials – and roughly the same number of
volunteers – featured many sparkling performances by locals. The podium rush was spearheaded by the short track speed skaters, as the Abby/ Mission contingent combined for an eyepopping 19 medals at Abbotsford Recreation Centre. And with friends and family able to attend due to
the close proximity, it made the experience all the more special. “I’ve had a bunch of friends – and some teachers I haven’t seen in years – show up,” enthused Mission’s Janie Green, who skated to six medals. “It was pretty awesome.” Green’s medal haul in the U14 girls division included three

Bearcats punch ticket to nationals Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
The Columbia Bible College men’s volleyball team made a run to the PacWest conference finals, yielding a silver medal and a ticket to the national championship. The Bearcats came into the conference playoffs at Capilano University in North Vancouver as the top seed by virtue of their 16-8 record, and had a bye into Friday’s semifinals. They faced the fifth-seeded College of the Rockies Avalanche with a trip to nationals on the line, and won in decisive fashion (25-18, 25-20, 25-19). That set up a clash with the Douglas Royals for the PacWest title, and while the Bearcats got off to a great start and
won the first set, the Royals prevailed in four (22-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-21). Regardless, the CBC men advance to the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) national championship, March 5-8 in Moose Jaw, Sask., where they’ll be seeded No. 5 and face the Ontario champ Humber Hawks in the first round. The ’Cats won nationals in 2011, and finished fourth in 2012 as the host team. Q On the women’s side of the PacWest tourney, both Abbotsford teams suffered disappointing results. Flames stave off Pilots’ sweep
The Abbotsford Pilots had designs on a firstround playoff sweep, but the Ridge Meadows Flames staved off elimination on Saturday evening. The Pilots had pushed the Flames to the brink on Friday at MSA Arena, winning 5-1 behind two goals from Bradley Parker to take a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven set. The Flames, though, bounced back in impressive fashion, winning 4-3 at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge on Saturday. Ridge Meadows opened leads of 3-0 and
4-1, with Dale Howell accounting for two of the goals and Eric Wieking mustering the lone Abby marker in response. The Pilots mounted a third-period rally, drawing to within one on goals by Braeden Monk and Jared Virtanen, but Flames goalie Tyler Read slammed the door from there. SWAN ROGERS AUSTMAN, Wilfred Leonard March 10, 1935 - Feb. 15, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we bid a good journey to Wilfred, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Wilfred passed away on February 15, 2014 after a long struggle with progressive supranuclear palsy. Today the world seems a little emptier, and perhaps with a little less laughter. Although we are a heartbroken we accept that he goes on ahead to the place where we all shall meet again. Wilfred leaves behind his loving wife Helen, nine children Bonnie (Robert), Leonard (Heather), Kathi (Terry), Karl (Mary), Lorrielynn (Mike), Rhonda (Boyd), Shauna (Troy), Nikki (Butch), Lauren (Chanen), five stepdaughters, Heidi (Will), Wendy, Karen (Terry), Leona ( Brian), Velma (Beige), thirty one grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. Wilfred goes on to join his first wife Mary and granddaughter Laura as well as his beloved brother Walter and wife Doreen. You are the oldest and wisest among us, we treasure all the lessons you have taught us. We accept that you are tired and it is time for you to sleep, close your eyes and dream a good dream. And we will dream of you. We will dwell not in sorrow but instead grow strength from the lessons we have learned from you. Until it is our turn to make the journey into the otherworld and we are reunited with you and all of those who have made the journey before us. Wilfred has resided for the last 14 years in Abbotsford BC. A Service will be held at 1:30pm on March 18th, 2014 at Garden Park Towers

GREER Lenard Lenard Greer late of Burnaby, BC, formerly of Abbotsford, BC passed away peacefully with his family at his side on February 18, 2014 at the age of 93. Lenard is survived by his daughter, Susan, son, Bill, and grandson, Tyler; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his wife, Joyce in 2004. Lenard had a keen interest in automotives, and played fiddle and violin throughout his life, continuing through his retirement. RENNIE Doug Doug Rennie passed away February 19, 2014 one day prior to his 86th birthday. He is survived by his 6 children, Alan and Myrna Rennie from Armstrong, Catherine and Essie Villaluz, Colin and Ingrid Rennie, Donald and Joyce Rennie, JoAnne and Keith Nelmes, all from Matsqui, and Margaret and Tom Brent of Dewdney; 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren: Brandee and Mark Foster (Quentin), Amber and Jim Allison (Kalysta and Ivory Schellenberg), Shaun and Jaime Rennie (Hunter and Amelia), Tyler and Pam Rennie (Liam), Marc Lebo, Megan and Dan Kalte, Cristina Rennie, Tosh Rennie (Katrina), Keegan Brent, Alex Brent, Riley Nelmes, and Kaitlyn Nelmes. Doug is also survived by his sisters, Jean, Helen and Bonnie; as well as extended family and friends. Doug was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen in 2010. A Celebration of Doug’s Life was held on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, 11:00 am at Cascade Community Church, 35190 Delair Road, Abbotsford, BC. Jennifer was taken from us in the morning of Tuesday, February 10 the result of a car accident near the City of Hope. Jennifer was much loved as a wife, mother, daughter, sister and teacher. Her high school days were spent at Abbotsford Secondary School and her undergraduate degree obtained from Brigham Young University. Jennifer completed a master’s degree at Thompson Rivers University. Jennifer began her teaching career in Abbotsford but 10 years ago accepted a similar position at the Beattie School of the Arts in Kamloops. She was a leader and an educational innovator who recently entered the administrative program in Kamloops. Jennifer will be sadly missed by her husband, Shayne, her two sons Ethan and Quinn, brother Jason, father Gerry, Shayne’s parents Rena and Wally Rogers and her many other relatives and friends. A Celebration of Jennifer’s Life will take place at the Legacy Centre (adjacent to the track at Rotary Stadium) at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 8, 2014. At a future date a memorial celebration is also planned for Kamloops.
Audra passed away peacefully on Feb 22, 2013 at the age of 94. She was predeceased by her husband, Nels, in 1983 and sons’ Dennis, in 2004 and Cliff, in 2010. She is survived by her sons, Arnold(Tanya), Mervyn, Lorne (Cathy), daughter Darline, and daughter-in-law June (Cliff), 14 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren. Audra was born in Orion, Alberta, and married Nels in 1941. They moved to Aldergrove in 1945, where they lived had a dairy farm until they retired in 1968 and moved to Abbotsford. Audra was a member of the Beaver Women’s Institute in the County Line area. Audra was very involved with the activities of the County Line School, where all 6 children attended. Audra loved her quilting and many relatives received her quilts. We would to thank the staff at Menno Home for their care and compassion. A celebration of life for Audra will be held in April.
Violet Lily Burritt passed away peacefully on February 19, 2014 into the presence of her Lord, with her family members at her side. She was born on March 16, 1921 in the family home near Leduc, Alberta. She is survived by four children: Joanne (Curtis) Congo, Brian (Debbie), Wayne (Betty) and Neil (Darlene), 10 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, her sister Ruth Hammer and brother Ivan Grabia. She was predeceased by her husband Alan (2007) of 57 years, grandson Colin (2010), brother, Waldemer Grabia and sister Lorraine Reirson. Violet suffered from a macular degeneration and was still able to crochet many hangers which she is best remembered for — and would give them to almost everyone she met! Pie crusts were one of her specialities

Dr. Philip and his staff of nurses at Royal Columbian went out of their way to comfort us and offer care above and beyond what was expected; also the nurses in the Cardiac Cath Unit and ICU who treated us as family, we thank you! We would also like to sincerely thank all of the Home Care Givers from Fraser Valley Health who came every day to care for her physical and emotional needs. Visitation was held Monday, February 24, 2014 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the Arbor Centre, Valley View Funeral Home, 14660-72 Ave, Surrey, B.C., with interment on Tuesday February 25, 2014 at 9:30 am. A Memorial Service was held at 10:15am at the Arbor Centre, Valley View Funeral Home, was followed by a luncheon.
