Ray Phillips:
Living the Good Life For many people Kamloops and its surrounding area is all about ‘living the good life.’ Our seasonal climate, our abundance of parks and back country, and our world-class recreational facilities certainly makes it easier to live an active life. We love hearing your stories about healthy living and we are happy to share this success story with you. If you have spent any time at the TCC you’ve likely seen Ray talking about how much he loves this city, the people and the weather. Ray’s passion for Kamloops ignited after he retired as a Burnaby Firefighter and moved here 10 years ago. Kamloops has been a good fit as he has made good friends and has enjoyed volunteering at many sports and cultural events. Ray has long been active in a variety of sports, “always working hard to win.” Though a life-long swimmer for fun and fitness, he had never swum competitively. But that didn’t stop him, at the age of 66 years, from registering as a speed swimmer in the Kamloops 2013 BC Senior Games. Ray started to train three months prior to the Games by increasing his swimming to 3 times per week, dusting off his bike for distance rides and putting lots of miles on his Nordic walking poles. All the while his wife Terry kept him going with her encouragement and support whenever he had a tough day.
Be kind to our community Please recycle this guide! This guide is published by
The hard work paid off. Ray won 5 medals (1 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze) and had a wonderful time at the Games meeting great people from all over the province. Ray also gained an athlete’s perspective of attending a ‘Tournament Capital’ event. He will put this to good use as he warmly welcomes the athletes and guests of the 2014 Tim Horton’s Brier as a proud volunteer singing the praises of our great city.

Aquatics Lifejackets & PFD’s – Choose it & Use it! For many Canadians, the summer season means enjoying outdoor activities such as fishing, power boating or canoeing. But each year, tragic and avoidable boating-related fatalities occur across Canada. According to the Canadian Red Cross, longterm trends indicate that the use of proper safety equipment such as a lifejacket or personal flotation device (PFD) would greatly reduce this number.
In a PFD look for these important features
Before heading out on a boat this summer, ensure that all persons on board - even strong swimmers - are outfitted with a correctly sized lifejacket appropriate to the activity. When it comes to lifejackets or PFD’s, close by isn’t close enough - it won’t work if you don’t wear it! Choose to WEAR your lifejacket or PFD and make every boating outing a return trip. For more information on selecting children’s flotation devices and how to properly test and maintain lifejackets or PFDs, visit our Water Safety section at kamloops.ca/swim.
12
Email a photo of your family wearing your PFDs this summer to swim@kamloops.ca to be eligible to receive a free family swim pass.

Early Years Spring is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the warmer temperatures. While outdoors with your tots take the opportunity to introduce your little ones to Physical Literacy skills such as running there and back, hopping on one foot, jumping with two feet, rolling down a hill like a log, balancing on limbs such as freeze tag, climbing over playground equipment, and more. Physical Literacy is learning the skills and having the confidence to enjoy many physical activities. The ABCs – agility, balance, coordination, and speed are fundamental skills that support physical literacy. The environments where children should learn these movements are on the ground, in the water, on the snow and ice, and in the air.

Children Summer Heat Sunburn isn’t the only concern for parents during warm months. Heat injuries like heat stress, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke can be caused by too much time playing in the hot sun. Drink Up and Drink Often! Water is the best thirst quencher during warm months, so make sure your child is drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Plan Play Time On days of high or excessive heat and humidity, it’s important to schedule play before or after the hottest times of the day, typically 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Play with Water On hot summer days, sprinklers, water balloons, lawn water slides, and super soakers are a cool and fun way to keep your child from overheating. Youth Mountain Bike Safety Mountain biking is a great sport to try out this spring and summer. Come out and enjoy the many parks Kamloops has to offer such as: Kenna Cartwright, Peterson Creek and Kamloops Bike Ranch. A few other places outside of city limits are Harper Mountain Recreation Area and Sun Peaks Bike Park. When out on the trails this season it is highly recommended to have a helmet with chinstrap, purchased within the last five years; gloves, a water bottle and a small repair kit. The minimum tools and supplies needed for a repair kit are: spare tube, allen wrench, pump. Bikes should be in good mechanical order with front and rear brakes, and a working drive train. Expect to be pedaling your bike on easy terrain with some hills at the very minimum. Trails that are green are for beginners, blue is for intermediate and black is for experienced riders.

Lori Dewart The first step is the hardest. After struggling for years with weight and type 2 diabetes, that first step was a doozie. From the first day, Shawn Wenger welcomed, assisted and encouraged me. I come into the classes knowing I’m in for an hour of working hard to push my limits just that little bit more. I’ve felt myself becoming stronger and stronger as the weeks have gone by. I still have a long way to go, and with the support and knowledge of the staff and class instructors, I’m in good hands and I know I can do it.

- Wear a Helmet
C.S.A approved hockey helmets are recommended for all recreational skaters. Brain injury is the number one killer and disabler of people under the age of 45, with 14,000 British Columbians acquiring new Brain Injuries each year. Wearing a helmet is the easiest way to prevent brain injury while on the ice.

Are you BC's next OLYMPIAN? The IGNITE Athlete Development Program introduces athletes ages 12-16 to a high-performance lifestyle by improving their athleticism, physical literacy, and fitness through a multi-sport training program that complements their current sport-specific practice and competition. The program is delivered by experienced specialists with the goal of building complete champions, enabling IGNITE’s athletes to build strength, speed, power, agility, and balance. Sessions focus on three movement streams: Sprint Training * Introduction to Strength and Conditioning * Gymnastics The purpose of the programs is to: • Enhance motor skills and develop physical literacy; • Assist with injury prevention through decreased compensatory movement; and • Educate and provide a movement foundation for the athletes to maintain outside the program.
Session Schedule: Two nights per week, 6:30-8:00 pm (Program runs in two, 5-month blocks) Venues at TCC: • Field House • KGTC Gymnastics/Trampoline Centre • Private Training Lab - Weight Room Program Fee: $60/month for 10 months of training. Gem of the Shuswap
The Adams River Nestled in the trees between Adams and Shuswap Lakes lies this pristine river which is fully protected within the boundaries of Roderick-Haig Brown Provincial Park. Haig-Brown, an avid fisherman and conservationist, had the foresight to protect this valuable but fragile resource. The Pacific Sockeye Salmon industry depends heavily on the Adams River, as it has the largest Sockeye spawning population in the world. Heavy use of the river for transporting logs was decimating the salmon stocks. Thanks to conservation efforts the Sockeye return every fall to spawn; most prevalent every four years when the river teems with over 2 million red colored fish. The Adams River is also a wonderful playground for whitewater enthusiasts. Keep in mind though, that while the many sweepers and logjams are ideal for spawning beds, they pose a dangerous hazard to the inexperienced. The class II and III rapids offer great fun for kayakers and rafters. In summer the water is warm and inviting. The nozzle like “Gorge” is always a rush! For family adventure don’t miss an Adams River raft trip. Looking for more excitement? Adams River Rafting, Canada’s original cataraft company, offers trips with their exclusive pontoon style catarafts. Adams River Rafting has been operating since1983.
Summer Camps 2014 We offer one week long camps all summer long for children ages 8 to 14 years.
