ABBOTSFORD
Dean Brody This Canadian ‘Mountain man’ brings his show to Abbotsford tomorrow night.
Chart-topping country star Dean Brody is coming to the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre Feb. 22 for his Crop Circles and Tractor Beams tour. With Maple Ridge native Madeline Merlo as the opening act, Brody anticipates the show will be “a lot of fun.” As a seven-time Canadian Country Music Association Award winner, including back-to-back Album of the Year wins (Trail In Life and DIRT) and two-time Juno award nominee, Brody has made appearances on George Stromboulopolous Tonight, Global’s Entertainment Tonight Canada, CTV’s eTalk and City TV’s The Bachelor
Canada, among others. Although he has gained widespread acclaim for his singing and songwriting, he remains the most proud of his band and says “they’re amazing musicians and I count them as some of my closest friends.” Brody has sold more than 250,000 singles and 75,000 albums in Canada. His fourth album, “Crop Circles” was released in November and debuted at number one on the iTunes Canada Country Album Chart and number three on the Canadian Country Album Chart. Brody reveals the reason behind the extraterrestrial-inspired album title is because he wanted to have fun experimenting with the imagery it provokes.
He creates his music with the same intention, to conjure thought and feeling. “Music is one of the best ways to communicate stories,” says Brody. “Often when I write a song I imagine a story and then try to make it come to life through music.” From a small-town boy growing up in Jaffray, B.C., where he played guitar in his spare time, to performing across the country, Brody admits that the best part about touring is when he hears his fans sing his songs back to him. “And then there are the buses,” says Brody. “We have a lot of fun on tour, I feel like I’m in college again – the buses are rolling dormitories.” In order to prepare for the intense travel schedule, Brody sticks to a simple regiment. “I stop eating things
that make my belly stick out,” he says. “Getting in shape is important because the schedule is quite frantic and it’s easy to feel run down very quickly.” With a successful career traveling from one Canadian town to the next and performing in front of hoards of fans, Brody is no stranger to the stage. He plans to bring the full country experience to Abbotsford and push the limits with his upcoming show. “From the animated alien who delivers me to the stage, to the antler/duck call solo in Mountain Man, we tried to make it different than anything out there and we had a lot of fun doing it.” To purchase tickets to Dean Brody’s Crop Circles & Tractor Beams Tour on Feb. 22, visit abbotsfordcentre.ca.

Brighter Smile A bright white and healthy smile goes a long way toward helping you your best. If your teeth aren’t as white as they once were, you may be considering a whitening treatment. Many foods and beverages, such as coffee, tea, colas, dark berries, and even chocolate, can stain the teeth over time. Certain medications also may contribute to changing the surface colour of your teeth. While there are many whitening systems available at drug stores, there are benefits to opting for a professional whitening treatment performed by a licensed dentist. For example, such a procedure is more controlled, allowing the dentist and his staff to control the strength and the placement of the whitening product. In addition, the dentist can help control discomfort for men and women with sensitive teeth. “Office whitening is always stronger than the at-home kits,” says Dr. Jay Gohel, an oral health professional and expert in extreme smile makeovers. In addition, an in-office whitening treatment may be condensed and take less time. All treatments are different, but generally the whitening procedure involves taking pictures of
your teeth before treatment to show the “before” and “after” results. Your dentist may prescribe a special fluoride toothpaste to be used prior to the whitening procedure to reduce sensitivity. A bleaching solution is activated by a special light to promote the whitening process. The whitening sessions will be broken up into a few different visits, for a total of one hour. It is important to note that the whitening process works best on natural teeth. Crowns and bridges do not whiten the same as natural teeth because they are covered. Men and women with crowns or bridges can speak to their dentists about other options. If whitening isn’t for you at the moment, there are other options. At the very least, a professional dental cleaning can be the start to a beautiful smile. “Tooth appearance can be vastly improved with a professional cleaning,” offers Dr. Gohel. “The superficial stains can be removed, as well as plaque and tartar.” A dentist can work with you to tailor a treatment to ensure your smile attracts attention for all the right reasons.

Massey, by Chef Jeff 62 restaurant
Farmer Sausage and White Bean Soup They say that February is the hardest month. The shortest month of the year can seem to go on forever with grey skies and sideways rain. Cellared vegetables and apples are running low and fresh, local food is tough to come by. March sounds like spring, but February is decidedly winter. There is nothing to do on these dark days but settle in with a hot bowl of soup and some fresh bread. A great winter soup uses farmer sausage and white beans to warm us inside. The Fraser Valley has an exceptional selection of locally made sausage. My favourites come from Rempel and Sons Meat Co. Ltd., Lepp Farm Market and a duck farmer sausage from Fraser Valley Duck and Goose. This recipe is always a hit in the restaurant in the winter months.
