‘How Great Thou Art’
Elvis Presley was first and foremost a gospel singer. He grew up in the Deep South where gospel music was heard in every church. It was the soul of the south and was the precursor to rock ‘n’ roll. Elvis won three Grammies and awards for his gospel songs, which were his true roots. Steve Elliott, who is known for his Elvis Elite show, is bringing ‘How Great Thou Art’: the Sacred and Inspirational Songs of the King to the Martin Exeter Hall in 100 Mile House on Feb. 22, starting at 7:30 p.m. “I love performing for the community and especially these songs,” says Elliott. “People will be uplifted, inspired and hear the Gospel

A Higgins Lake resident, Watt passed away in 2003, but is fondly remembered as a staunch supporter of DLDVFD. Sharon Chislett and Gerry Chamberlain kokanee placed second and third respectively.

Plant Engineer

Atlantic Power Corporation (APC) is looking for a motivated and safety oriented Plant Engineer at our William Lake Power Plant. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Plant Engineer will receive daily work direction from the Operations Shift Engineers. Responsibilities will include: performing plant cleanup duties; assisting Operations crews, as required; assisting Maintenance crews as required; and other duties as assigned.
This is an entry level position, subject to taking inhouse progressive training to learn basic operations and maintenance skills. The Plant Engineer is expected to possess their )ourth Class Power Engineering CertiÀcate and is expected to participate in a progression program that includes rotating into a shift work environment. The successful candidate possesses a Grade 12 diploma (or G.E.D). Prior industrial or Power Engineering experience is recommended. Possession of a valid BC Driver’s license is required. Heavy equipment (dozer and loader) operating experience is an asset. Standard First Aid and Safety Training is an asset. You have a proven track record for teamwork and interpersonal skills. Candidates must be in good physical health to meet the demands of the position, and will be required to take safety and job related training. As this is a safety sensitive position, clearance of a preplacement medical and drug alcohol test are bona Àde occupational requirements.

The 100 Mile Nordic Ski Society is inviting all female cross-country skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts and those who want to be skiers and snowshoers to attend the annual Ladies Ski and Mad Hatter Tea Party at the 99 Mile Ski Trails on March 2, starting at 1 p.m. The event is open to all ladies, from first time trail users to the experienced, whether they are 100 Mile Nordic members or non-members, says Nordic spokesperson Lauren Bock. “Invite your daughter, mother, sister or friend for a fun afternoon of skiing/snowshoeing [at your own pace] and then join Nordics members for tea, goodies and friendly conversation.” Attendance is by donation to the 100 Mile & District Women’s Centre Society. The Nordics are changing it up this year by making it a Mad Hatter Tea Party, so women and girls are urged to find or make a funky, fun hat or toque to wear. There will be prizes for the “craziest” hat. Bock notes there are a limited number of snowshoes and skis to rent, but participants can book a set with Cam at the lodge by phoning 250-3952104. The Health Care Assistant (HCA) program is up and running at the Sprott Shaw College satellite campus in 100 Mile House, and it’s offering a new Business Administration program in the near future. Local campus manager Diana Badke says there are five women in the inaugural HCA program who have completed one month of the course and are “really happy” with the smaller class size and the one-on-one attention they are getting. She notes the program involves 4.7 months in the classroom studies, and then the students go into the community to do their two-month clinical portion of the program. “We’ve made connections with all of the facilities and all of the preliminary plans are in place. We just have contracts to sign, so they’ll be doing their ‘clinicals’ locally ... and doing some home support as well.” Badke says there will be another intake for the HCA on March 24. She adds the college is going to be offering its Business Administration (BA), which is a 25-week, fulltime program. Classes will be four hours a day and will be held in the afternoon. The program is scheduled to start on March 31 and those interested need to apply by March 14.
