The body of Shaminder Brar, 34, was found by a passerby Feb. 18, 2013 at the side of Riverside Road between King and Vye roads. At the time, police said Brar had suffered “significant injuries” to her rear torso which

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is investigating human remains found on the banks of the Fraser River in north Abbotsford on Sunday. At about 8 a.m. that day, a citizen was walking along the river in an area off Walters Street. The person spotted what appeared to be human remains entangled in some debris at the water’s edge. Abbotsford Police Department (APD) patrol officers, forensic identification members and major crime unit detectives responded to the scene and attempted to extricate the apparently decomposed human remains for further examination and investigation. Based on investigators’ observations, the circumstances were deemed to be suspicious and the APD contacted IHIT. An autopsy will be performed to determine if this is a homicide. Other Hand “It was 20 years ago today, Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play” sang the Beatles so many years ago. That refrain sprang to mind when I was reminded Monday that “20 years ago today, Michael de Jong was first elected MLA.” Coincidental perhaps, the rhyming of those two phrases, and while the Beatles certainly soared to great heights, they lasted as a band for only 10 years. Michael de Jong’s career as a provincial representative for the various iterations of West Abbotsford began on Feb. 17, 1994 when he dashed the Social Credit Party’s hopes for revival and ended the 33-year political career of Grace McCarthy. Not that the deciding factor on that

fateful night was huge. As I recall, initial returns had Michael ahead by only 32 votes, then it rose to the mid-50s and finally in a judicial recount the winning margin was 66. Not bad for a virtually unknown 30-year-old with but a couple of years as a school trustee under his political belt before tackling the mighty warhorse McCarthy. Despite the narrow victory, de Jong’s win was significant in that it heralded the rise of the BC Liberal Party. Gordon Campbell was also elected in a byelection on that night – his success strengthened by the fact he was running in an already established Liberal riding, the seat vacated for him by a previously elected member of the party. In 1991, the Socreds were turfed in favour of the NDP, the Opposition seats filled by 17 MLAs from the upstart BC Liberals as a result of party leader Gordon Wilson pointing out during a televised leaders’ debate that the incessant bickering between Mike Harcourt and Rita Johnson was “why nothing ever

gets done in British Columbia.” That remark led him and 16 other unknowns into the Legislature. However, it wasn’t too long before dissension grew among the ranks and Wilson, along with paramour Judy Tyabji, was deposed. When Campbell took possession of his

CMBs a step in wrong direction Re: Rash of Canada Post mailbox vandalism, Feb. 7 edition. Sadly, the new year is going to look much like 2013, which had almost 5,000 community mailbox (CMB) theft-related incidents just in B.C. alone. Can we ask why Canada Post is moving forward with their plans to put Canadians who aren’t already blessed with these “secure” mailboxes at risk by ending door-to-door delivery?

Switching to these mailboxes in this region, where half of the country’s mail theft takes place, is a big step in the wrong direction. The Canada Post customer website states that community mailboxes are “a secure and convenient, one-stop pick up.” I guess at least half of that statement is true, to the thieves anyway. The first month of the year is upon us once again, and the newly grown crowds at the local gym are in abundance. Congratulations on your will power. To assist you, I want to provide you with cooking method options that will hopefully help to add variety and keep some excitement in your meals. Let’s be honest, how many more dry pieces of toast, boiled eggs, or plain salads can you stomach before you lose your faith to the burger and fries that haunt you in your dreams? Included in the top 10 most common New Year’s resolutions are lose weight, exercise more, and eat better. Although I am not a Dietician or a Personal Fitness Trainer, I can assist you in the kitchen. Having a backyard barbeque is a popular event during the summer, but yearround it provides a great low fat cooking method. Grilled meats, fish, and even vegetables always taste great because of the distinctive flame-licked smoky taste and caramelization. Very little fat needs to be added to items to keep them from sticking and there are no pots & pans to clean up. A low-fat cooking spray applied to the cold grill before igniting can also ease the cooking process and help to make those wonderful grill-marks. One of the few health concerns is the amount of carcinogens when food is over-cooked over a flame. The blackened bits ideally need to be removed if this is a concern for you. Poaching in a savory broth or wine is a great way to not only infuse flavour but also keep your chicken

or fish extremely moist. I find that poaching is very misunderstood. It is not the same as “boiling”. One of the last things I would want to eat is boiled chicken. The culinary definition of poaching is to cook gently in water or other liquid that is hot but not actually bubbling, about 160 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Wine poached salmon with a dollop of seasoned no-fat sour cream is amazingly delicious and incredibly moist. Braising meats is another way of reducing the amount of fat in your meal. “Braising” is the process of quickly browning your meat for flavour and then cooking covered with a small amount of liquid. Inexpensive tougher cuts of meat that are cooked using this “moist heat” method over a longer cooking time will become very tender. The liquid (wine, broth, beer, juice, etc.) helps to break down the unpalatable connective tissue found in these bargain provisions at the butcher’s counter. However, braising also works with leaner products like skinless chicken breast or pork loin - just don’t cook them as long. We have only scratched the culinary surface, but hopefully this will aid you in bringing some enthusiasm to your kitchen adventures. Don’t forget about the abundant number of no-fat bottled dressings in your local supermarket. They are not only ideal on salads, but also use them as marinades, dips, and sauces with certain dishes to help add variety quickly... just remember “no fat” doesn’t mean “no calorie” - always read the nutrition labels. Abbotsford Heat head coach Troy Ward, quizzed as to what improvements his star pupil Markus Granlund might need to make in order to nail down full-time NHL employment, doesn’t miss a beat. “Just a chance,” he said. “Nothing more, nothing less. “He needs a chance, and he needs experience. And how can you get experience until you get a chance? And then I think all those things will fall into place.” Indeed, based on his remarkably consistent and prodigious offensive production in his first season in North America, the 20-year-old centre from Oulu, Finland appears ready to step in as soon as the NHL parent Calgary Flames have an opening. Through 47 games, Granlund leads the Heat in goals (23) and points (42), and he’s already shattered the team’s rookie points record of 34, previously shared by T.J. Brodie (2010-11) and Dustin Sylvester (2011-12). He’s tied for the Heat team lead with eight power-play goals, but his +9 rating suggests he’s also effective at even strength. Granlund is third in points among rookies and 13th overall, and he’s tops among AHL freshmen in goals. He also leads the league in shootout game-winners with three. The Flames’ second-round selection in the 2011 NHL entry draft has been particularly hot of late, racking up seven goals and seven assists over the last nine games. He’s had six multi-point outings

Hi everyone! Ryan Walter here again. I want to thank so many of you for your support of our local professional hockey team, the Abbotsford Heat. What a season our team is having! Our home team stands first in the Western Conference with 69 points, and second overall in the AHL. In spite of this, however, our attendance at this point in the season, compared to last year, is down. Even so, our strong desire is to work for the citizens of Abbotsford to make up some of that lost revenue here in the spring. during that span, and failed to register a point in just one game. “Of course, it’s surprised me a little bit,” Granlund said, reflecting on his smashing debut on this side of the pond. “But I knew that I can play here and that I can be a good player.” Granlund’s instant success is less of an eyebrow-raiser in light of the fact he spent the past two seasons playing against men with HIFK Helsinki in Finland’s SM-liiga, where he was second in team scoring in 2012-13 with 10 goals and 20 assists in 50 games. The rap on Granlund as a young prospect was his foot speed, but he hasn’t struggled in the least to keep up to the pace of play in the AHL – in fact, he’s dictating it. “I’ve never seen his foot speed as an issue,” Ward noted. “It just doesn’t behoove you to listen to a scouting report or listen to anything until you get somebody and you’re with them every day.” Granlund’s rapid development has received crucial assists from teammates Joni Ortio and Max Reinhart. Ortio, a goalie from Finland who is having a tremendous season in his own right, has helped his countryman (and former HIFK Helsinki teammate) adjust to North American culture off the ice. Granlund’s English was rudimentary when he arrived last fall, but he’s much more

comfortable conversing with media now. “That was the biggest thing (in transitioning to North America) – English and everything like that,” he said. “But I think Ortio helped me a lot. Now I know what’s going on, and I’m even more comfortable.” Granlund has forged a terrific chemistry with Reinhart, who has been on his left wing for over a

But Ward has been most impressed with the centre’s tremendous competitiveness. “He’s just a really competitive dude,” Ward said. “He doesn’t go off the rails like other young players, and he doesn’t have outside focuses like other players. You put all those things together over a period of time, and you get a lot of consistency. “A lot of rookies are just young kids that are, just being truthful, into a lot of stuff that they shouldn’t be into. Their focus is friends and their focus is tweeting, playing video games – stuff that he (Granlund) quite frankly just doesn’t have over here. He’s just a hard-working guy who doesn’t know a lot of people – he just keeps his nose to the grindstone.”

While he had dreamed of being a police officer for much of his life, he didn’t feel confident enough to act on that dream. At 33, he finally felt able to take that step and do what he loved after encouragement from an officer he met while playing baseball. “I never acted on my dream because I truly believed it was just a dream,” he says. “I thought that dreams weren’t meant to be achieved.” Milmine was moved by the 2011 suicide of Ontario teen Jamie Hubley, who killed himself after years of bullying for being gay and a figure skater, to start Bullying Ends Here, a website that tells Hubley’s story as well as his own. Milmine has travelled all over Canada and the U.S. speaking to students and encouraging them to contact him if they need help. In the presentations, he shares

Names such as Amanda Todd and Rehtaeh Parsons are sadly well-known to many Canadians. Both teens committed suicide after years of bullying at the hands of classmates. On Feb. 26, Canadians will recognize Pink Shirt Day, a day devoted to preventing bullying and helping children and teens who are being victimized. For some people, bullying hits very close to home. Tad Milmine, now an RCMP constable, is one of them. As a child, Milmine was bullied relentlessly by classmates and locked in the basement by his stepmother every day for 12 years. His father, an alcoholic, never tried to help him, even when Milmine’s stepmother verbally abused him. “I always held out hope that one day an adult would see that I was in the basement and perhaps ‘rescue’ or ‘save’ me,” he says. “No one ever came.” At 17, Milmine ran away

his own story and that of Hubley, and tells the students that he understands what it’s like to be an outcast, and that he too is gay, just like Hubley. He shares this information to point out that he is no different than the people listening to him in the audience. “I never let my sexuality stand in the way of living out a dream,” Milmine

says. “I never let the negativity while growing up stand in my way.” Milmine’s presentations are done on his own time and with his own money. “I always wanted to ‘help’ people and today I am lucky enough to be in that position,” says Milmine. “Youth need to know that nobody can help them if they don’t speak up. You have to share, have to ask

for help. As the Pacific International Junior Hockey League playoffs begin, Abbotsford Pilots coach Jim Cowden faces a unique motivational challenge. The Pilots are already guaranteed a berth to the Keystone Cup – the Western Canadian junior B hockey championship tournament – by virtue of the fact they’re hosting the event, April 17-20. So, whereas in years past a PJHL championship was the first step in the journey towards the Keystone Cup – a bauble which the Pilots won in 2012 – a deep PJHL playoff run might be viewed as optional this time around. But Cowden is confident that his core of leaders in their final season of junior eligibility will want to make the most of their last hurrah. “We’ve got a lot of experience,” he said, alluding to a 20-yearold group that includes forwards Jarrett Martin, Braedon Monk and Brad Parker, defenceman Ryan Parmar, and goalie Zachary Station. “They’re going to motivate themselves, and everybody else will follow, because they’re our leaders. We’ve just got to get by this first series, because it’s going to be a battle.” That series, pitting the Pilots against the Ridge Meadows Flames, opened on Tuesday evening at MSA Arena, but the result was unavailable at press time. The Abbotsford Heat weathered a nightmarish travel scenario last weekend in rather impressive fashion – they just ran out of gas in the end. Coming out of the AHL all-star break, the Heat had to fly cross-continent to face the Charlotte Checkers. But due to a snowstorm on the Eastern seaboard, their connecting flight out of Chicago was cancelled. That forced the team to take a 20-hour bus ride from Chicago to Charlotte, and their Friday game was rescheduled to Saturday. The Heat showed no sign of bus legs, though, winning 5-1 on goals from Markus Granlund, Blair Jones, Sven Baertschi, Ben Street and Ben Hanowski. They got off to a terrific start to Sunday’s rematch, opening a 4-1 lead before the first period was up, with Granlund, Jones, Josh Jooris and Derek Smith scoring. But Charlotte rallied to win 5-4 in overtime, and ex-Heat forward Brett Sutter got the OT winner. The Heat (32-15-5) still sit first in the Western Conference, and they continue the road trip vs. the Milwaukee Admirals on Friday.

The Battle of Abbotsford, as the crosstown rivalry matches between the University of the Fraser Valley and Columbia Bible College have become known, lived up to its billing last weekend. She was predeceased by her dad, Lindsay Rowat; mom, Ruby Rowat; and nephew, John Rowat. Wendy had a genuine love of all animals and was a longtime supporter of the S.P.C.A. She was a generous woman of both heart and hand. Her sense of humour, quick wit and love of hockey will be greatly missed. Maria passed away peacefully February 9, 2014 at the age of 86 years. She was born in Krasikowo, Russia and moved to Brazil with her family in 1930, where she met and married Henry, her husband of 60 years. They had 4 children while living in Bage, Brazil, before moving to BC on May 15, 1968. Maria was a wonderful Wife, Mother, Oma and Great Grandmother. At the top of her list was feeding her family, everything from her delicious borscht to her coveted peppermint cookies. She also found utmost pleasure in spoiling us with her hours of knitting, keeping everyone’s feet warm. We will forever remember her gifts of deep love and commitment to each of us. She will be dearly missed by her husband Henry and her children Maria (Udo) Lange, Kathi (Doug) Young, John (Marlene) Krueger and Frieda (Harry) Dueck. She will be forever remembered and loved by her grandchildren Jody (Eric), Kevin, Corey, Kimberly, Tim, Nicole (Justin), Matthew and Alyssa as well as great grandchild Taylor. A graveside service will take place Saturday, February 22 at 10:00 a.m. at Maclure Road Cemetery, followed by a memorial service in memory of Maria at 11:30 am at King Road MB Church. It is with great regret, sadness and yet somehow comfort that Patrick James Cecil Ryan has now passed on to be with his predeceased father, Cyril James Ryan (Torbay, Nfld.). Pat was only 49 years old. He loved animals especially his pet dog, Sadie and enjoyed the company of his family and friends. He was a hell raiser and fought a lot!! His hardest battle was the one he lost to sickness on Jan. 28, 2014 at Penticton Regional Hospital. Anyone who took the time to get to know Pat, knows that he was a man with a good heart. We’ll miss him always. Peter Rudolph Geissler of Abbotsford, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2014. He is survived by: his best friend, soul mate and love of his life, Cheryl, daughters Megan Little, Nicole Geissler (Kevin Burk) and son Scott Geissler (Christie), 7 grandchildren: Hannah Little, Telaya Geissler, Ethan Little, Kylee Geissler, Adam Burk, Ryder Geissler, and Andrew Burk, brother Alfred Geissler (Susan), sister Marianne Steiner (Joe), as well as many extended family members and cherished friends. He was predeceased by his sister Christel and his parents Rudolph and Margarete Geissler. Peter was born June 12, 1946 in Vanderhoof, BC. He lived in Lejac, Prince Rupert, Nanaimo and Lantzville, BC while growing up. Peter took up carpentry as his trade of choice in 1966

and never looked back. Peter married his soul mate in 1971 and in 1973 they moved to Prince George where they began their new lives, working together in the construction industry. Here they made lifelong friends and their family grew. In 1986 Peter moved his family to Abbotsford where they have resided ever since. From building houses, to cabinetry, to furniture and even wooden locks and safes, Peter’s attention to the details and need for ‘doing it well’ was a trademark he stood by. He was a proud supporter of Girl Guides of Canada over the years, from working on floats for the Canada Day Parade, to building cabins and repairing roofs at the local camp, to making thank you lanterns for guiders. Peter could even sell cookies with the best of them! Peter’s greatest joy was when he was surrounded by his children and grandchildren, carving pumpkins, decorating gingerbread, reading stories, playing games, picnicking, and canoeing. A Celebration of Peter’s Life was held Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Rd., Abbotsford, BC.
