‘Community his second family’ Harry DeJong: Long-serving politician and volunteer passes

He won a seat in the legislature, spending eight years with the Social Credit party as an MLA for Abbotsford – serving for a short time as the minister of agriculture. Known for speaking his mind, Ted says his father struggled with party politics and always tried to maintain an independent voice. As the Social Credit party dissolved, DeJong knew there was a new party emerging and thought it was time to hang up his hat at the provincial level. His exit from the legislature corresponded with the amalgamation of Abbotsford and Matsqui into the new city of Abbotsford in 1995. DeJong threw his hat into the ring to lead the new city, against sitting Matsqui mayor Dave Kandal and Abbotsford’s mayor George Ferguson, who ultimately won. Ted said his father had his heart in the election, wanting to once again serve the area at the local level. But the dynamics of the city had changed, and after losing he took some time to re-

Public service and agriculture were threads that ran throughout Harry DeJong’s life – taking him from a Matsqui dairy farmer to mayor of the community; to Victoria as the MLA for Abbotsford and minister of agriculture; to a longtime director and champion of Abbotsford’s Agrifair. Though he enjoyed working with his hands, and could often be found out in the fields, his shop, or his garden, his strong ethics and belief that he could improve his community encouraged him through a long career in politics. Eighty-one-year-old DeJong passed away on Feb. 6 – a significant loss to the community he served for decades. Coming from generations of dairy farmers, he was born as Hans DeJong in the Netherlands in 1932. His teenage years were spent under German occupation in the Second World War, an experience that deeply impacted him. After the liberation of the Netherlands, DeJong and his family came to Canada and settled near Abbotsford. In Matsqui he met his wife Ann, also the child of Dutch dairy farmers. They married in 1954 and started farming in Deroche, having four of their children there – Joan, Colleen, Ted and Valerie. Their fifth child, Cameron, would be born years later in Matsqui. Ted DeJong said times were tight when his father started out, and after about a year and a half of dairy farming, he considered giving up. But a local dairy field man helped his father make a deal on purchasing more cows, which allowed him to keep the farm. Black ice blamed for multiple accidents Police attended 34 collisions between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Tuesday, and responded to more than 40 incidents throughout the morning. Black ice and slippery road conditions led to many single- and multi-vehicle accidents across Abbotsford. Abbotsford Police Department Staff Sgt. Rick Stewart said most of the accidents were minor, but some resulted in injuries. Stewart said that emergency resources were stretched thin in order to deal with all of the accidents, and drivers were encouraged to be cautious.

The Abbotsford Police Department wants drivers to put down cellphones while driving. The force is kicking off a unique campaign that combines distracted driving awareness and Valentine’s Day. The Love Them Enough Not to Call initiative starts today and runs until Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. APD spokesman Const. Ian MacDonald said residents can send an email to roadsafety@abbypd.ca, and on Feb. 14, police staff will call loved ones letting the recipients know, “first of all that they’re loved on Valentine’s Day, and that the driver of the loved one is committed to road safety as well.” MacDonald said that even though the legislation banning use of handheld electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle has been in place for four years, some people aren’t getting the message. Last Friday within a couple of hours, officers stopped 80 drivers who were using their cellphones.

Abbotsford firefighters were called to Donairo’s on Monday afternoon after a fire started at the back of the building.

Fire rips through restaurant

A South Fraser Way restaurant suffered extensive fire and smoke damage Monday afternoon. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service assistant chief Ron Hull said crews responded to Donairo’s in the 33300 block of South Fraser, near the corner of Bourquin Crescent East, after the restaurant owners saw smoke at the rear of the building around 3 p.m. There was heavy black smoke rolling out the back side of the structure, with the building entirely full of smoke, according to Hull. The cause is unknown and no injuries were

reported. The restaurant was open at the time. When store owners noticed the smoke, they evacuated and called 911. “The fire looks like it’s done some extensive damage. Smoke damage to the building is extensive as well,” said Hull. “It’s a small business. You don’t like to see these things happen.” Fire services responded with 10 units and approximately 30 staff. Abbotsford Police, B.C. Ambulance Service, Fortis and BC Hydro also attended the scene.

Get tougher on cell use Too many drivers are just “not getting it.” Texting and talking on cell phones is still a widespread practice in this city and across B.C. In a matter of just a couple of hours last Friday, Abbotsford Police officers stopped 80 motorists who were using their cell phones. Consider that local figure in the context of this chilling provincial statistic: The Insurance Corporation of B.C. says distracted driving remains the third leading cause of fatal car crashes in B.C. On average, 91 people are killed annually. Drivers are four times more likely to crash when talking on a handheld phone and 23 times more likely to get in a crash if they text behind the wheel. Looking at your cell phone for less than five seconds is equivalent to driving more than the length of a hockey rink – 64 metres – with your eyes closed. It’s common to hear the phrase, “Is it

going to take someone getting killed in order to ...” With nearly 100 attributed fatalities per year, that question has been answered in chilling fashion. If deaths don’t convince people to keep their hands off their cell phones, what’s required here? The fine for a distracted driving ticket is $167. Clearly, that is not enough of an incentive to convince many drivers to put down the electronic device, and if they must talk, to invest in a hands-free. What will it take to truly change people’s attitudes about driving and cell phone use? Fines of $300? $500? Impoundment of vehicles, similar to the measures implemented to reduce impaired driving? It’s obvious that the existing ban and penalties for cell phone use while driving, along with accident statistics, aren’t enough. And neither is hoping for common sense to prevail.

Other Hand On Thursday afternoon the phone rang: “Hello Mark, this is Ted DeJong, Harry’s son ... my dad passed away last night.” Sincere condolences expressed, my thoughts went back over the years that I knew Harry DeJong, a man who through five decades served our community and our province with dedication, diligence and devotion to making where we live a better place. He was serving as an alderman on Matsqui council in 1975 when I got a call from Dave Kandal … “we need your help to get Harry DeJong elected as mayor.” What followed were many nights spent with Kandal and Spud Murphy planning strategy. We realized one of the biggest stumbling blocks to mayoral success was Harry DeJong himself, at the time shy and reserved with a very strong Dutch accent. A “cure” was needed. So, because person-

al video cameras were not yet common, I enlisted the help of a professional cameraman I knew through the Abbotsford Sport Parachute Centre. On the evenings between strategy sessions we’d gather at Harry’s Matsqui Village dairy farm to video him speaking, repeating and reviewing over and over. The filming worked. Harry gained strength and confidence in public speaking and our campaign strategy was successful in the civic elections of 1975. Harry spent 12 years in the mayor’s chair – the large brick edifice that is now city hall built during his tenure, as was establishment of what is now the Ag-Rec complex and many other community facilities. Harry was a hands-on mayor, and one day discovered what he thought were senior civil employees taking overly long lunches at a local watering hole. Harry, playing the sleuth, caught and disciplined them, which eventually ended up in a very public libel/ slander suit. Vindicated in court, and strengthened by his years in the mayor’s chair, Harry sought greater office and in 1987 was elected as one of two MLAs to represent the thenseparated municipalities of Abbotsford and Matsqui. Unfortunately for Harry and the Social

Credit Party he represented, 1987 also heralded the ascension of Bill Vander Zalm, and by the 1991 provincial election the party was in tatters. Only Harry and six other Socred MLAs were re-elected. He soldiered on, however, only to resign in 1995 to once again seek the mayor’s chair, this time for the newly amalgamated City of Abbotsford.

While Harry was the face of the DeJong family and his career, it was his wife Ann who was the true heart of it. That, to my knowledge, was Harry’s only electoral defeat. But undaunted by disappointment, he threw himself into community work, fully immersing himself in the future success of Agrifair, the presidency of which was relinquished only a year or so ago when failing health required it. But while Harry was the face of the DeJong family and his career, it was his wife Ann who was the true heart of it.

Without her support and faith, I’m certain Harry’s spirit of community giving would not have been so successful. I was at his 80th birthday party when Ann told me they were moving from Abbotsford to a new home being built adjacent to their daughter in Agassiz. When I asked why, Harry offhandedly said, “health reasons,” never letting on the graveness of the situation. He has left a great legacy in his wake, yet for all Harry has done there is not yet a permanent recognition of his contributions to this city. Jack Robertson, Ross Siemens and I wrote a letter to the city more than a year, requesting that all or part of the Ag-Rec complex be named in his honour, before he died. Many of our schools, streets and parks have been named after notable community contributors. Unlike most of them, and thanks to council dithering, the tribute to Harry DeJong will be, if it occurs, posthumous, and that is a shame. On Thursday however, there will be a celebration of life for a quiet man who gave so much to make this community what it is today. That he will not be there to hear the many spoken words of honour is also regrettable. markrushton@abbynews.com

I was getting my groceries at the Abbotsford Costco on Friday, Jan. 10 and was ready to pay when I realized some cards (bank card and others) were missing from my wallet. I then remembered seeing my two-year-old in my purse the day before and realized what had probably happened to my bank card. I had $20 cash on me (and a cranky two-year-old) and the groceries came to $50, plus the line-up was building behind me.

Residents to have more input on cell towers Federal government approves policy for greater community engagement Residents across Canada will now have more say on where cell towers are built in their communities. Abbotsford MP Ed Fast said the new rules will address concerns of local residents and municipalities as towers are proposed around the city. “It is essential that the people of Abbotsford be considered in the process to determine the location of a new tower, and it is up to the wireless industry to ensure that local voices are heard.” The placement of cell towers has become a divisive issue with the rapidly increasing demand for wireless services. “Canadians deserve to have a say in how new cell tower locations are identified in their communities,” said Fast. The changes to the policy guiding the installation of new antenna towers will require com-

panies to consult communities on all commercial tower installations, regardless of their height. Currently, they must only hold consultations for towers over 15 metres. Companies must also build the tower within three years of consulting with communities and ensure that residents are wellinformed of upcoming consultations. The improvements will also strengthen federal communications with the public on tower siting procedures, including new online resources on the process, and new reporting mechanisms to track tower issues and report back to communities. The government also currently requires companies to first look at sharing existing tower infrastructure, whenever they can, to reduce the number of new towers needed in each community.

The second motel robbery in Abbotsford in less than a week took place Thursday night in the 32000 block of Marshall Road. Const. Ian MacDonald said police were called at about 11:30 p.m. Two men wearing masks had entered the lobby brandishing handguns and a knife. They demanded cash, and the front desk clerk handed over the small amount that was in the register. About 10 minutes before the robbery, a man in his 40s had entered the lobby and asked for the clerk to make change for him. MacDonald said police would like to speak with this man, as he may be a witness or a person of interest in the robbery. The robbery suspects are both described as Caucasian men with medium builds. They were both wearing masks with skull designs on the front.

LifeBridge Recovery Ministries presents the LifeBridge Benefit Concert on Saturday, March 8 in Abbotsford. The concert begins at 7 p.m. at Bakerview Mennonite Brethren Church, 2285 Clearbrook Rd., featuring the Good Noise Vancouver Gospel Choir and local singer Crystal Hicks. Good Noise Vancouver Gospel Choir has performed many benefit concerts for charitable organizations and recently shared the stage with artists such as Barbra Streisand, David Foster, Holly Cole, Dee Daniels and Jim Byrnes. The choir, directed by Gail Suderman, has also appeared on many television shows, most recently Gospel to Go for Vision TV. Suderman is a classically trained musician and teacher at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. “While most of my life has been in the classical world of music, I still like to be a part of gospel. Ten years ago I thought there was a place for a gospel choir. We started out with 40 singers and now we have 90,” she said. Funds from the concert go to LifeBridge Recovery, which “bridges the gap between church and community and helps people in recovery by means of mentoring, spiritual coaching and leadership training,” according to director Keith St. Jean. “LifeBridge helps people on the road to finding their life, their spiritual direction, and provides a foundation for their future,” he added. The concert features music from the traditional to the contemporary, with Love Can Build a Bridge, some new arrangements of standards like Amazing Grace, Precious Lord Take My Hand, and songs by Richard Smallwood. The academy started last October and currently has 33 children, with plans to expand the program next fall. Children come after school twice a week, get a snack, and have a one-hour group lesson on violin, cello or piano, and then an hour of choir. Instruments are loaned free of charge. “The idea is to give them a first-class experience in music, partly for the musical experience but also to help build self-esteem and a feeling of accomplishment,” Dyck said. The cost for each student is about $1,500 annually, with the academy relying on donations from individuals, businesses and foundations. Abbotsford mom Amanda Rauh has travelled to Uganda

on the tradition. Amanda works with Watoto, a non-profit that cares for 200–300 orphaned children

twice before to work with a charity – but this time she is taking her seven-year-old son with her to pass

under the age of three before they move on to live with their adoptive families. Her last trip was in 2011.

Her son Jackson always asked when he could join her in Uganda. “I made the mistake of telling him when he turned seven, he could go to Africa with me. Well, that was almost four years ago and the child has a memory like an elephant. “So when I was putting together the Baby Watoto national team, my son asked again, or rather told me that he was going to be seven and that he should be able to go to Africa.” Amanda agreed. The two are heading out from Feb. 15 to March 4. to Uganda, with Amanda leading a team of 15 people from across Canada. In tow are 20 pieces of luggage carrying everything from playhouses to baby formula to medical supplies. Amanda spoke with Jackson about why he wanted to come. “His answer was that he wanted to

But being a mom who believes in teaching independence, she promised Jackson he could join if he could fundraise $2,000 towards the trip.

Jackson went on to host lemonade stands, collect recycling, and sell chocolate bars and some of his toys. He hit his target, and he is joining Amanda on Feb. 15. When hearing criticism about taking such a young boy on the trip, Amanda replies, “Why not? Let him see what life is really like in some places.”

UFV Alumni appoint directors UFV Alumni Association has change in leadership

President’s term extended The University of the Fraser Valley’s board of governors has renewed Dr. Mark Evered’s term as president and vicechancellor through to June 30, 2017. Evered holds a bachelor of science in biology from McMaster University and a PhD in physiology from the University of Western Ontario. Over the course of his 40-year career, he has held teaching, research, and administrative appointments at Cambridge University, the University of Western Ontario, the Howard Florey Research Institute in Melbourne, the University of Saskatchewan, and Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops.

The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) alumni association board of directors has appointed two executives and four new directors. Jason Barnes (BSc ’04), who had been elected chair of the association in November, accepted a job in Calgary that will prevent him from carrying out his leadership duties. He will continue to serve as chair emeritus, a newly created (ex-officio) position to help ensure the history and perspective brought by those who have served the association in prior years will not be lost. Justin P. Goodrich (BA ’12) who was formerly vice-chair, was appointed as chair. Nik Venema (BBA ’12), formerly treasurer, was appointed as vice-chair. Both men — in addition to already serving on the association’s executive — have previously served as elected members of the UFV Board of Governors. The position of secretary continues to be filled by Len Goerke (BA ’98), while the position of treasurer will temporarily remain vacant until a suitable candidate is identified. The Abbotsford Heat kept the Texas Stars’ high-powered offence under wraps for one night, but they couldn’t do it for two. On Saturday, the Heat edged the Stars 3-2 in a shootout, with goalie Olivier Roy sparkling between the pipes, Josh Jooris and Derek Smith scoring in regulation time, and Sven Baertschi notching the winner in the shootout. It was arguably the most entertaining home game at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre this season, as two of the AHL’s most skilled teams brought out the best in each other. Sunday’s rematch was shaping up to be more of the same – the teams traded first-period goals before Shane O’Brien gave the hosts a 2-1 lead with a shorthanded tally early in the second period. But Texas staged a hostile takeover at that point, reeling off six goals in a span of 10:25 en route to a 7-2 victory. It was a jaw-dropping display from a Stars team which came in with the best power play (27 per cent) and second-best overall offence (3.61 goals per game) in the AHL. Sunday’s blowout loss, though, was an outlier in an eight-game homestand where the Heat posted a 5-1-2 record. They head into the AHL all-star break in first place in the Western Conference at 31-15-4. Heat forward Ben Street and defenceman Chad Billins are off to St. John’s, Nfld. for the all-star game, which goes on Wednesday night.

UFV extends winning streak to 12 games The University of the Fraser Valley basketball teams put themselves in prime playoff position by sweeping the UNBC Timberwolves on the road on the weekend. The Cascades men ran their winning streak to 12 games, beating their Prince George-based foe 87-62 on Friday and 67-61 on Saturday. The two games had vastly different textures – the opener was a massive blowout, as UFV raced out to a 48-28 lead at the half and cruised to victory behind 24 points from Kevon Parchment (including 5-for-5 shooting from downtown) and 22 points and 12 rebounds from Jasper Moedt. The second game was much closer, as UNBC challenged the Cascades throughout and rallied to get to within two points with less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. UFV hit its foul shots down the stretch, though, to grind out the win and improve to 15-5, thereby locking up second place in the Pacific Division of Canada West – and home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Parchment and Moedt, with 17 points apiece, again paced the offence. UFV WOMEN KEEP PACE The Cascades women also swept, fending off an upset bid from the T-Wolves on Friday (79-63) before winning more comfortably on Saturday (88-51). Sarah Wierks (19 points) and Courtney Bartel (17 points) led the way in the opener, and both players hauled in eight rebounds. Aieisha Luyken, with 18 points and six boards, set the tone on Saturday, with Shayna Litman (10 points, nine rebounds) nearly notching a doubledouble in just 16 minutes off the bench. The victories allowed the UFV women to keep pace with the UBC

Holbech savours Olympic experience in Sochi Former national team speed skater from Abbotsford has found a niche in sport administration

When Bryce Holbech moved from Prince George to Abbotsford during his middle school years, speed skating was, in his words, “a neat little sport that I liked.” During his tenure with the Matsqui Blades, the local short track club, the sport grew from a hobby into a passion, and it’s carried him all the way to the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Holbech, 38, works as a senior sport consultant with U.S. Speedskating, and he’s in Sochi as a U.S. Olympic Committee advisor – essentially “a general managertype position” for the American short track and long track teams. “It’s been really good here,” Holbech told The News last week via Skype from Sochi. “It’s interesting – you can take pictures of palm trees in the Olympic park, with snowcapped mountains in the background.” Holbech’s journey to these Games is a fascinating one. The Yale Secondary grad rose to become one of Canada’s top short-track skaters in the mid-1990s, and was a member of 5,000metre relay teams that won gold at the 1995 world championships in world record time, and followed up with a silver medal in 1996. “The Canadian short track team was pretty strong – Marc Gagnon, Fred Blackburn and Derrick Campbell were the three big names, and there was always a fourth person on those (relay) teams that nobody would know,” Holbech said with a self-deprecating chuckle. “In 1995 and ‘96, I was pretty much that fourth person.” Holbech, who was inducted into the Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame in 2004, never tasted Olympic competition as an athlete. He was still relatively young in his career in 1994, and finished 12th

in Canadian qualifying for the Lillehammer Games. In October 1996, he suffered a broken ankle, and never reached the same level afterward. “In ‘98, I came back and I think I finished eighth (in qualifying for the Nagano Games), and I just didn’t have it,” he recalled. “It’s a tough sport to come back from injuries in a short period of time.” Holbech retired from competitive speed skating at the age of 23 and transitioned into banking, but stayed involved with the sport as a volunteer with the Canadian technical committee. That eventually led to a job with the Vancouver Olympic Committee as the sport manager for short track at the 2010 Games. “It was a great experience,” he said. “I walked away from the sport achieving many of my long-term goals, but not my dream goal of going to the Olympics. Vancouver ended up being a route to the Games. “I met some great people, and that led to a lot of different potential jobs.” One of those was with U.S. Speedskating, where he’s helped to restructure the sport’s governing body south of the border. He does much of his work remotely from his home in Chilliwack, where he lives with his wife and two sons, and commutes to the organization’s headquarters in Salt Lake City for roughly one week per month. “As long as athletes are getting what they need . . . you can pretty much do (the job) anywhere in the world,” he explained. “I can pretty much Skype with anybody, and they don’t know where I’m at.” Holbech has high hopes for the U.S. speed skaters in Sochi, and though he represented Canada during his own athletic career, he said it’s not overly

Erna a long time resident of Mission, passed away peacefully in Christine Morrison Hospice on February 7, 2014. She is survived by her devoted husband David of 66 years, her loving children Victor, Stan (Lois), Judy (Walter), Joanne (Gordon) and brother Rudy (Eleanor). She will be sorely missed by her 11 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. Her generosity extended beyond her family to the community by participating in charities as Missionary Circle, Lions Club, and MCC. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 14 at 1:00 pm at Cedar Valley Mennonite Church. Agatha Thiessen Jones passed away February 8, 2014 at Sherwood Crescent Manor in Abbotsford. Aggie was born in a small village in Russia in 1924, and as an infant immigrated to Canada with her parents Peter and Maria, and her brother and sisters. Mom married Helmut, her first husband and father of her children, in 1945. He predeceased her in 1978. In 1982, Mom was married again, to Tom, who passed away in 2004. She greatly enjoyed dancing, doing the polka and waltzing away many evenings with both Helmut and Tom. In later years, Tom and Aggie could be found most weekends having fun at the Aldergrove Legion or the Abbotsford Eagles Club. Aggie was predeceased by her parents, her siblings, husbands Helmut and Tom, infant son Bernie, and stepchildren Robert and Margaret. Mom will be missed by sons Edwin and Ronald, daughters Melita (Bob) and Irma (David), step-son Brian, 9 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, her nieces and nephews and her extended step-family. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 11:00 am at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford. Interment will follow at Maclure Road Mennonite Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff of Abbotsford Regional Hospital for caring for our mother. It is with sad and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Reta Rempel on Tuesday, February 4, 2014. Reta was a long time resident of Abbotsford, BC. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Lawrence Rempel, and her five children, Debbie Richardson (Alex Lefebvre), Linda Stout (Peter Stout), Cliff Rempel (Joanne Rempel), Vern Rempel (Verla Rempel), and Gerald Rempel (Karen Rempel) as well as her only surviving sister, Florence Johnson. With great joy and love she was also blessed with 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Memorial service to be held on Monday, March 3, 2014 at 1:00 pm at the Cascade Community Church, 35190 Delair Road, Abbotsford, BC. Dave Potter passed away on January 24, 2014 at the age of 45 years after a year long battle with esophagus cancer. Dave leaves behind his loving wife Silvia of 24 years, daughter Jessica and son Kyle as well as his mother Bev Potter (Grant Gill), father Rick Potter, sisters Christine Rempel (Bruno), Corinne Craig (Colin), stepbrother Blair O’Conner (Yvette), along with many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Dave was raised, went to school and played hockey, here in Abbotsford. Dave moved to Mississauga, Ontario, at the age of 18 years, where he lived for the past 27 years working for PCL Construction. Dave’s funeral was held on February 1st in Mississauga, Ontario. For those who knew and loved Dave, he will always live in our hearts, he will always be missed.

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Ed Fast, but we are comforted and rejoice in knowing that he is now with his Lord and Saviour. Ed’s kindness, gentleness, sense of humour, friendly personality, and warm smile will be greatly missed by family and friends. Born in Hepburn, Saskatchewan, the family moved to Abbotsford in 1945 where he grew up and worked as a carpenter for most of his life. Ed earned a reputation as a hard-working man who could build or fix almost anything and was always willing to help others. He loved the outdoors and spent much time fishing, hiking, hunting,

and boating, and working on the farm. Ed was a devoted Christian and a true example of walking with Christ. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years, Tina, daughters Carol (Jef) Baerg, Wanda (Mike) Braun, grandson Nolan Baerg, granddaughter Emily (Nathan) Unger, Jackson and Jesse Braun, siblings Ernie, John (Pat), Corey (Ruth), Hedy Johnson, Marlene (Henry) Loewen, Evelyn (Andy) McDougal, Katherine (Jim) Stobbe, sisters-in-law Margaret and Evelyn Neufeld, many nieces and nephews, and numerous friends. Predeceased by his son Martin Edward, parents Abram and Elsie Fast, mother-in-law Justina Neufeld, brothersin-law Lyle Patterson, Earl Johnson, John Neufeld, and sister-in-law Marilyn Fast. At her home in Carleton Place on Sunday, February 9, 2014. Alice Wilson, loving wife of Keith Wilson for 56 years, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. She is predeceased by her parents Yorke and Edna Armstrong of Calgary. Loved mother of Don Wilson (Nancy) of Kanata and Cameron Wilson (Ita) of Vancouver, BC. Cherished grandmother of Trevor, Brenna and Reid (Don) and Macdara and Saorla (Cameron). She will be sadly missed by her brothers and sisters Arthur Armstrong (Linde) of Vancouver, Washington, Arthena Fleming (Larry) of Calgary, Gordon Armstrong (Mirka) of Calgary, and Marion Dick (Ron), of Calgary. Predeceased by her sister Ilene Armstrong. Alice will be fondly remembered by her sisters-inlaw and brothers-in-law Eileen Laycock (Bob) of Calgary, and Newton Wilson (Mary) of London, ON. Predeceased by Dorothy Moxley (Reid), Stan Wilson and John Wilson. She will be survived by her aunts, uncle and many nieces and nephews, as well as her many good friends across Canada, particularly in Old Time Fiddle Organizations, where she played and taught traditional fiddle back up piano at many workshops and fiddle contests, while living for many years in Abbotsford, BC. Her love for music was evident here, in the Ottawa Valley, where she continued to be a willing participant at many functions in the area. A memorial service will take place at the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, 19 McArthur Avenue, Carleton Place on Monday February 17, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow. Passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Saviour on Sunday, February 9, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. Our special redhead Kristin was born on February 24th, 1972. She was raised in Abbotsford by her parents Jerry and Evelyn Templeton and became a proud big sister to Kori and Keri in 1973. On November 5th, 1994, she became the loving wife to Shawn Erickson. They expanded their family with her most proud accomplishments, her children: Kyle, Miranda, Braden and Connor. Harry was born in the Netherlands in 1932 where he grew up on a dairy farm. In 1947, after World War II, he immigrated to Canada with his parents and siblings. They settled in the Abbotsford area and established themselves in the local farming industry. In 1950 Harry met his future wife, Ann. They were married in 1954 and started their lives together on a dairy farm in Deroche where Harry successfully built his farming business. While they lived there, Harry and Ann had four children: Joan, Colleen, Ted and Valerie. In the spring of 1962 they moved to Matsqui, continued dairy farming and welcomed their fifth child, Cameron, to the family. Harry was grateful for all that Canada had done to liberate the Netherlands during WWII and as a result he had a strong desire to contribute to his community and his new country. He served on the church council and the Abbotsford Christian School Board. He also served as a Director for the MSA General Hospital (now the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Center), the Matsqui Pool Association and the Matsqui Police Board. With the encouragement of many in the Matsqui community Harry ran for political office serving as alderman (1971 – 1975) and Mayor (1975-1987) for the District of Matsqui. In 1987 Harry was elected MLA for the Social Credit Party. He served in Victoria for several years including a position as Minister of Agriculture and Aquaculture. Following his retirement from politics he continued to contribute to the community in many ways: the Agri-Fair Association being one of his favourite organizations where he served as President for many years. In 2013 Harry was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for his service to the community. In all areas of service, Harry has been lauded for his honesty, integrity and compassion. Harry treasured time spent with family. He enjoyed working, fishing, travelling and socializing with his immediate and extended family. Birthday and anniversary celebrations honoring family members were opportunities to give thanks to God for His goodness. Harry’s life was characterized by his love for the Lord, his love for his wife and family, and his love for the community. Harry was pre-deceased by his parents, Tienus and Jeltje, and his older brother, John. He is survived by his wife, Ann; daughters Joan (Tom) LeMahieu, Colleen (Bryan) Gingerich, Valerie (Gerald) Veltkamp; sons Ted (Greta) DeJong and Cameron (Angela) DeJong; 9 Grandchildren: DJ (Jordan Freeman) LeMahieu, Denver (Naomi Barrettara) Gingerich , Travis Gingerich, Jonathan Veltkamp, Breanna Veltkamp, Tyler (Stephanie) DeJong, Jared DeJong, Lexi DeJong and Kasi DeJong; 3 great-grandchildren Lily, Willow and Henry DeJong; 3 brothers Henry (Tieny), Ted (Ida) and Ed (Rhea) DeJong, and 5 sisters Jenny Jansen, Ann (Albert) Kampman, Corrie(Bill) Kampman, Gert Hoogendoorn, Alice (John) Dieleman; as well as many nieces and nephews. The family is very grateful for Dr. Bull, the nurses, staff, and volunteers at Cascade Hospice (Chilliwack) for the loving care they provided to Harry in his final days. A memorial service to celebrate Harry’s life will be held, Thursday, February 13th at 2:00pm at Gateway Community Christian Reformed Church, 2884 Gladys Ave, Abbotsford.
