Sidney Celebrates Family Day 2014 W
ith ample access to parks, attractions, and seaside exploration, Sidney, BC is showing itself to be a fantastic place for families to visit and to live. There’s no better example of that family-friendly environment than the Sidney Family Day LEGO Weekend, taking place on February 8-10. On the heels of the wildly fun and successful 2013 Sidney Family Day LEGO event, this year a number of community organizations and businesses are teaming up for a full three day weekend of Sidney Family Day LEGO fun! This year’s event has also partnered with the Sidney Fire Department, in recognition of their 100th Anniversary. LEGO displays, interactive building opportunities, a treasure hunt, and a professional LEGO builder are just some of the reasons to spend time in Sidney for the 2014 Sidney Family Day LEGO Weekend. Due to overwhelming attendance in 2013, this year’s event takes place over three days, and in a variety of venues throughout town. There will be so much more to see, and to build!

Along with all the fun events and activities taking place around town this Family Day long weekend, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll along our 3.6 km waterfront walkway, take in the Sidney Seaside Sculpture Walk, the Tulista Art Gallery, experience fabulous views from the fishing pier and explore the alluring beaches. Also located on the waterfront is the award-winning Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre where the many wonders of the Salish Sea marine life are displayed in massive aquariums. Sidney’s scenic downtown offers first-class accommodations, numerous entertainment options, an excellent assortment of restaurants and a variety of boutique shopping. You will especially enjoy exploring the many new and used bookstores our “Booktown” offers. While wandering in Sidney, be sure to check out our street statues and murals as well as the Historical Museum. All summer long, Sidney’s main street, Beacon Avenue, closes on Thursday evenings to host the very popular Sidney Street Market, one of the largest in the province; and Sunday afternoons, the waterfront Pavilion comes alive with the Summer Sounds Concert Series. Sidney’s popular Sidney Street Market will begin early this year! Enjoy two more weeks this market season with opening day beginning on Thursday, May 15th. The Market
runs from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm every Thursday until August 28th. Food, fun, fashion, music, unique one of a kind finds, all at the Sidney Street Market.

Seaside Sculpture in Sidney
While you are enjoying all the festivities of Family Day, take some time for a photo opp with one of the unique sculptures in this spectacular outdoor gallery situated on Sidney’s beautiful waterfront promenade. Wednesday, February 12th 10:00 am – 6:00 pm Don’t miss this remarkable sculpture show and sale at the Sidney Pier Hotel. Along with sculptures on display from many of the talented Sidney Sculpture Walk artists, the Pier will host Sculptor, Fred Dobbs as Artist in Residence for the day. All this leading up to the big announcement of the winner of the People’s Choice Awards! Tickets must be provided at the door as space is limited to the awards gala.

Museum honors fire department’s 100 years With renovations complete at the Sidney Museum, the ninth annual LEGO Exhibit is bigger and better than ever. On display until March 31st, the new “expert” LEGO model of the Sydney Opera House greets visitors as they are transported into memories of their youth, and children imagine what it would be like to own all the models. This year celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Sidney Fire Department with a very large collection of LEGO fire trucks, fire halls, and other fire fighting models. In fact, most of the firefighting models produced by LEGO are on display at the Museum, and in addition they have some special models such as a replica of the Shirley Fire Hall, and many other scratch built models. A number of LEGO fire trucks are on loan from Sidney Fire Marshal Jeff Tomlin. The Star Wars collection has grown this year, and the Museum has also added an amazing four foot tall model of the Eiffel Tower. The museum is open daily 10-4, and admission is by donation.
