Teacher Julie Loland succumbed to cancer last week.

Julie Loland got others excited about her ideas, whether it was organizing her co-workers to surprise their students with a “flash mob” at a year-end school assembly, or it was incorporating the latest technology in the classroom. She was a natural leader, full of energy, passion and kindness. It was no surprise then, to see almost all 240 students of Terry Fox Elementary, as well as parents, administrators and fellow teachers, turn out on Thursday morning for a touching tribute to the Grade 2 teacher. The group loaded onto four school

buses and went to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. There they gathered on a grass area outside the hospital, just below the room being occupied by Loland, who was battling cancer. She had been admitted to hospital earlier in the week. Some of her fellow teachers decided they wanted to do something to lift her spirits. They discussed the plan during their lunch break on Wednesday, and all the students were given permission forms later that day to take home for signing by their parents. It culminated Thursday morning with the large group breaking into song on the hospital grounds in

tribute to Loland, whose husband Reuben was also on scene. They chose their school’s theme, The Terry Fox Song, written in 1993 by Grade 7 student Samantha Van Staalduinen. The chorus included these lyrics: “Sometimes there’s a problem, something you’ll find tough, but do the best you can and you have done enough.” When they were done, they all waved to their beloved teacher and exclaimed: “We love you, Mrs. Loland!” Some of the adults hugged each other and wiped away tears, while Loland waved back through the tinted hospital windows.

trio of choice opportunities aimed at getting people hooked on great careers are now being served up at the University of the Fraser Valley’s Faculty of Trades and Technology.

Culinary arts professionals work anywhere from cruise ships to exclusive resorts; from safari tours to movie sets; or from oil drilling platforms to mountain park lodges, but often not without obtaining Red Seal endorsement governed by Canada’s Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program. And that’s where UFV’s Professional Cook Apprenticeship program comes in. Line cooks looking for more money, responsibility, and job opportunities must first work their way through the Red Seal apprentice program — the first 15-week section of which is running in the Trades and Technology Centre at UFV’s Chilliwack campus at Canada Education Park. “It’s a huge part of job advancement and increased pay within the industry,” says UFV instructor chef David Bensmiller. As an added bonus, students can apply for a $1,000 grant following course completion. “Essentially it pays for itself,” Bensmiller says. (Note: Professional Cook Apprenticeship is different than UFV’s 39-week Culinary Arts program that trains students from the ground up.) Upon successful completion of all Professional Cook requirements, students can write Professional Cook Certificate of Qualification exams. After that, it’s only a matter of enjoying just desserts. Earls cook Kelly Barber is one of many professionals looking to increase experience and earnings with UFV’s Professional Cook Apprenticeship program.

Canada’s Labour Force Survey, employment in all of the trade occupations is expected to enjoy yearly growth up to 2020, with the strongest growth expected from chefs and cooks. To diversify employment opportunities, students can combine their skills as a culinary artist with UFV’s Hospitality Event Planning certificate. Restaurant management and food services skills combined with tourism and hospitality training are assets for chefs who want to open their own establishment or be promoted to management positions.

Mobile Crane Operator: Don’t want an office job, but would like an above-average salary? In eight weeks, quality candidates can become qualified crane operators through UFV’s new Mobile Crane Operator program. Working directly with Eagle West Cranes, students will enjoy hands-on training under the watchful eye of respected industry professional Brad Paddock. “It’s a great industry for people who are not afraid to take risks, but are still very aware of the limits of their equipment and abilities,” says Eagle West’s Gary Davey.

Crane operators often enjoy tactile learning and working with their hands. Jobs can be as diverse as lifting for powerline companies, lumber yards, construction sites, or mines. “Basically any company that’s got to get something in the air,” Davey says. Crane operators were a huge part of the recent Port Mann Bridge project. Like transport truck drivers, crane operators can either work as independent contractors or join a company. UFV’s eight-week Crane Operator program (for Stiff Boom 40 tonnes & under) is an entry point into the profession, offering Level B and A training in fourweek shifts beginning March 3. Upon passing the assessment, students become a certified Stiff Boom 40 Tonnes and Under Level A crane operator (no supervision restrictions).

Career outlook According to the BC Trades Outlook 2010-2020, the demand for skilled trade workers will outpace the number of workers by 2016. As key sectors such as infrastructure, oil, gas, and mining expand in the next decade, the need for crane operators will continue to grow. In addition, large numbers of

older workers will retire, opening up opportunities for trained crane operators. The highest average trades wage earners include electricians ($25.26), crane operators ($24.61) and plumbers ($24.10). For more, see goo.gl/a2xbmE.

Powerline Technician: Take charge of your future with UFV’s Powerline Technician (PLT) training — a pre-apprenticeship program providing basic skills necessary to enter the workplace as a powerline worker. “It’s a great career for people who love the outdoors and like to travel,” says Kerry Van Sickle of Electrical Energy Training Group, UFV’s highly regarded partner for this new program. Powerline technicians build and maintain overhead and underground power transmission and distribution systems, erect and maintain electrical poles, towers, guy wires, and install or repair live-line wiring. People in this field are physically fit and enjoy the challenge of working on ladders, in hydraulic buckets, or other aerial devices. “Powerline technicians find the career rewarding, especially knowing they’re providing an important service to the community,” Van Sickle says,

adding, “People succeeding in this field usually have good manual dexterity, spatial perception, strong motor coordination, and they’re detail and object-oriented.” Beginning March 3, UFV’s 12-week PLT training includes activities and core skills required for a Level 1 powerline technician, and includes theory and outdoor performance-based exercises. Hands-on experience is delivered in collaboration with highly experienced instructors from Electrical Industry Training Institute (EITI Global). During the program’s last week, an on-site job fair will provide students with the opportunity to meet employers, make connections, and demonstrate skills.

Career outlook According to workbc.ca, the wage for a powerline technician can reach $80,500–$95,000. The estimated demand for workers in B.C. is 24,500, up from 23,100 in 2010. Students who complete the UFV Powerline Technician foundation program can pursue apprenticeships with an electrical utility or electrical contractor company. For more, see goo.gl/Ib630r.

An Abbotsford man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of high-ranking Red Scorpion member Matt Campbell on Jan. 2 at the Fraser Valley Auto Mall. Jimi Sandhu, 24, was arrested Friday in Vancouver and is next due to appear Feb. 17 in Abbotsford provincial court. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) announced the charges on Saturday. Supt. Kevin Hackett, the officer in charge of IHIT, said the arrest came as the result of a “fast-paced investigation ... (that) has continued around the clock for the past 30 days.” He commended the Abbotsford Police Department for its assistance with the investigation and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) for its partnership with IHIT. “Gang-related homicide investigations are difficult to resolve,” Hackett said. Supt. Dan Malo, chief officer of CFSEU-BC, said CFSEU was fulfilling its role as B.C.’s integrated anti-gang police agency. “ ... it is essential that CFSEU-BC collaborate with units like IHIT and our policing partners to not only ensure communities around the province are safe from gang-related violence but that when that violence does occur that we are there to assist,” he said. Police were called to the auto mall – located in Abbotsford off Mt. Lehman Road – on Jan. 2 after Campbell, 32, staggered into a

business there at about 3:45 p.m. with severe neck wounds. Police later confirmed he had been stabbed. Campbell, an Abbotsford resident, was among 10 people charged in 2006 after police broke up a gun trafficking ring that sold handguns, rifles and machine guns to drug dealers across the country. He later received a two-year sentence. Campbell was involved in the Red Scorpions at the same time as Abbotsford’s Bacon brothers – Jamie, Jarrod and Jonathan. Jarrod is currently serving a 14-year sentence for drug conspiracy, while Jamie serves time on a weapons conviction and is awaiting his trial in the 2007 slayings of six people in a Surrey apartment tower. Jonathan was killed during a targeted gang shooting in Kelowna in August 2011. Sandhu also has a criminal history. He was charged with weapon and assault offences after a person was shot in the wrist in January 2009 following a dispute at a home on Newcastle Drive. In January 2011, Sandhu was among four people charged with a home invasion and abduction that involved two men being abducted from Homestead Crescent and then driven to a home on McCallum Road. There, the mother of one of the abducted men was taken from the home. All three captives were later released near Clearbrook Road. Charges against all four were stayed due to insufficient evidence. According to the provincial court database, Sandhu has convictions for assault with a weapon, driving while prohibited, possession of a prohibited weapon and theft.

School in mourning From A1

Terry Fox Elementaryâ€™s beloved teacher Mrs. Loland, 37, lost her battle with cancer 24 hours later, leaving an entire school in mourning. Lolandâ€™s close friend, fellow teacher Colleen Gregory, said on Monday that Lolandâ€™s passing has left a big hole. â€œShe was so vibrant â€“ positive, giving, so kind, humble, passionate about what she does,â€? Gregory said. â€œPeople were drawn to her because she was so excited about things.â€? Loland had been teaching in the Abbotsford school district for more than a dozen years, and had been at Terry Fox Elementary since 2004. She was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer in January 2012 which metastasized to her lymph nodes while she was pregnant with her third child. She was dealing with a second round of chemotherapy and raising her three young sons â€“ now ages one, four and eight â€“ while earning her masterâ€™s of education degree in educational practice from Simon Fraser University later that year. Gregory said Loland was loved by her students. â€œThey did adore

her. She was very spontaneous in doing things for them. Her students just got excited by her energy.â€? The school plans to hold a special service/ assembly in memory of Loland. A public memorial service takes place this Friday at Northview Community Church (32040 Downes Rd.), starting at 11 a.m.

Contributions can be made via the â€œLoving the Lolandsâ€? community Facebook page. As well, events are taking place to raise funds for Lolandâ€™s husband and children. Other Hand The technical evolution of devices that brings music to our ears began, instruments aside, with huge wind-up units that played sounds off a metal drum. Then came paper rolls and, thanks to the discovery of vinyl, eventually records. The devices to play them became smaller, such as the ubiquitous MP3 players and smartphones. Following records – the 78s, 45s, 33s and so on – came large 8-track tapes soon usurped by cassettes which, in turn, were made obsolete by CDs. And like VCR movies, it’s now almost impossible to even find them anymore. The above mentioned mini-computers/phones similarly consigned CDs to the evolutionary dustbin.

Yet resting in the dash of many cars are CD players, the actual mechanism often now silent except in one of ours. Not that it was playing sweet music. It just growled and grumbled annoyingly when the key was turned on, and often kept grinding away long after the key was turned off. Fortunately, following the somewhat short interludes of annoying clatter when the engine was started and stopped, the unit remained silent, until its keeps going even after the key is off shenanigans killed the battery. When the car wouldn’t go, it was time for the CD player to go too. The bad news from the garage is that it can’t be fixed other than removing/replacing it, in the meantime leaving a gaping hole where the stereo once was. Seems that in the six-disc player one of the discs was undecided as to whether it should play, change or eject itself, in the process making an incredible racket. The only cure, once removed from the car, was to irreparably gut it. And the cheapest way to do that was to do it myself.

There are more gears and levers driving the unit than in the finest Swiss watch. Sadly, my efforts to resolve the sticky disc dilemma laid waste to all that engineering. I’m great at gutting things, not so great at putting them back together. The result of which, since thanks to the automotive industry’s policy of immediate obsolescence, the units are no longer made, meant it was off to the auto-wrecking yard to find a replacement. Thus acquired and installed, the hole in the dash filled and the speakers once more reverberating with sound, the regular driver of said vehicle is happy again. I do, however, now have six CDs extracted from the offending apparatus. letters Referendum should decide issue

Since our council doesnâ€™t seem to have the intestinal fortitude to resolve the downtown garbage dump homeless problem, couldnâ€™t we hold some kind of referendum and let the people of Abbotsford decide the issue? Letâ€™s separate and help the truly needy from the rest and go from there. Building a shelter in the downtown core at public expense for people who have demonstrated that they donâ€™t want to be helped, doesnâ€™t make too much sense and isnâ€™t fair to the local merchants who are going to be directly affected.

A shelter, if it is going to do any good at all, should be located where the people involved donâ€™t have easy access to what for them is creating their problem.Â There are many locations far from downtown that would be ideal.Â Letâ€™s be realistic and look at what these sorts of solutions have done to other towns. All you soft-hearted people who think this shelter is a good idea, ask yourself, would you like them as neighbours? Is it fair to ask others to do it? Ted Driscoll, Abbotsford

The potential development of an Agri-Mall at Eldridge and Atkinson roads in east Abbotsford, near the Sumas Canal, will be discussed at a public information meeting Feb. 5. Council voted in November to move the project to a public meeting, despite staff’s recommendation council deny the application to develop an agricultural equipment sales, servicing and rental centre. The area is currently zoned for residential development, but because the city has yet to grow into the area, staff raised concerns that the city is still years away from understanding the needs of the area and an Agri-Mall could alter future development capacities. But the proposal, from Cold Water Ranch Ltd., states the group has interest from local equipment dealers and if the city doesn’t consider its proposal, they will explore locations in Chilliwack. The meeting will be held at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre on North Parallel Road from 6 to 8 p.m.

More transit tickets allotted The Mission Abbotsford Transit Committee (MATC) has approved an increase in the number of transit tickets given to individuals facing financial difficulties. “Discounted transit passes can make a real difference for families and individuals struggling to make ends meet,” said committee member Abbotsford Coun. Henry Braun. “The costs associated with transportation can often lead to social isolation and can affect people’s ability to access needed services.

Providing additional tickets to help improve access to transportation and transit to those who need it most . . . is the right thing to do.” Wayne Green, executive director of United Way of the Fraser Valley, said that local service providers were surveyed to determine the need. “With this program, United Way works with 18 partners distributing transit tickets so that people are able to attend medical or dental appointments, counselling sessions or even basic things like grocery shopping.”

Green was satisfied that the increase will meet all of the current demand in the two communities – a 33 per cent increase in adult tickets and an increase in tickets for children from 40 to 260 per month. A new need was identified this year for HandyDART tickets, which was also approved. Mission Mayor Ted Adlem, MATC chair, believes the partnership with United Way to provide emergency transit assistance to those with limited incomes is valuable.

Bearcats v-ballers go 4-0 PacWest conference volleyball action in Abbotsford last week saw a trio of local squads boost their playoff stock. Q At Columbia Bible College, the Bearcats men faced the Douglas Royals in a clash of nationally ranked teams – CBC was No. 5 in the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) poll, while the Royals were No. 11. The Bearcats registered an impressive two-game sweep, winning in four sets on both Thursday and Saturday to improve to 13-7, tops in the PacWest. Q The CBC women also swept their Douglas counterparts, winning in five sets Thursday and four sets Saturday to boost their record to 6-14. That moved them ahead of the Royals into sole possession of fifth in the PacWest. Q The University of the Fraser Valley men’s squad is playing catch-up in the race for the final playoff berth, and they registered a pair of terrific upset wins over the Capilano Blues.

The Blues were ranked No. 10 in the nation coming in, but the Cascades prevailed in four sets on Friday and in three straight on Saturday. They’re now 7-13, two games back of College of the Rockies for the final playoff spot. Q The defending national champ UFV women faced a surprisingly stiff test from fourth-place Capilano – they eked out a five-set win Friday, but fell in five to the Blues on Saturday. Marie is survived by her loving husband and best friend Bob who will miss her beyond belief and will never forget the fun times and devotion they had for each other. Also survived by her son Eric (Debbie) of Prince George, daughters Donna (Elmer) of Kelowna, and Elaine (Greg) of South Carolina, four granddaughters and four great grandchildren. Marie will always be remembered for her feistiness and being very straightforward in her dealing with people. She had a big heart to help those in need and never quibbled over who they were or what they may have represented to others. Flowers etc. are declined and no service by request. She was a wonderful teacher at Terry Fox Elementary and had recently finished her Master’s in Education at Simon Fraser University.
