On our weekend getaway to Parksville/Qualicum Beach, we went spelunking for the first time at Horne Lake Caves. It was exciting to put on hard hats and climb through these caves. North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre

Visit the rescued black bears, eagles, owls, falcons, ravens and other wildlife. The centre is a world-class rehabilitation facility with an interactive learning centre and gift shop. There are a number of local farms to visit with fresh and often organic produce as well as locally raised meat. Find food as well as locally crafted items at the Qualicum Beach Farmer’s Market on Veteran’s Way, the Errington Farmer’s Market next to the War Memorial Hall, the Orange Bridge Market on the Island highway in Parksville before the orange bridge and at the Craig Street Summer Market in Parksville. Handcrafted gourmet cheeses will delight the senses at the Morningstar Farm in French Creek. Choose from old-world inspired, aged raw milk cheeses, award-winning brie and more. Get inspired at our local art galleries and stroll the street markets for a real taste of the local culture. Music Parksville Qualicum Beach is a lively area kicking with music concerts and events all year round. The Errington Hall features top-notch Canadian talent and the McMillan Arts Centre in Parksville holds folk nights and classical shows. The Old School House Arts Gallery presents the annual Harvest of Music festival plus a year-round schedule of small intimate musical events. Plenty of local restaurants and pubs have live music to add to that night on the town. Galleries This area is an art-lovers paradise. In Qualicum Beach, discover art galleries including The Old School House Arts Gallery, where local work is featured and interesting exhibitions occur often. In Parksville, the McMillan Arts Centre also showcases the work of local artists. The Salish Sea Market in Bowser offers artwork, jewelry, artisan food, and more - all sourced from artists located on the Salish Sea. You can even contribute a few brush strokes to a collaborative painting by a famous local artist who goes by the name of Monk. Whether you’re exploring the local swimming holes, trying a “pop shove” on your skimboard or sampling regional wine or beer, you’re sure to recharge your spirit and feel energized after these experiences. Parksville Uncorked Wine lovers and foodies will swoon at this festival. Parksville Uncorked is an annual wine and culinary festival that involves wine and beer tasting events, wine dinners, bubbly brunches, wine-inspired spa treatments and local tours. The events take place at The Beach Club Resort and Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Resort. Skimboarding & Stand-up Paddleboarding Flatland skimboarding and stand-up paddleboarding culture has exploded in Parksville Qualicum Beach and today the area hosts some of the biggest competitions in the country. Parksville Beach has long and wide tidal pools, making it ideal for the skimboarding. The area’s sheltered waters are perfect for stand up paddleboarding. Visitors can rent or buy boards in the area and take camps and lessons. See the shopping, tours & rentals directories on pages 68-69. Spider, Horne and Cameron Lakes Lakes are where you’ll find many locals in the summer months. Spider Lake is known for its warm water and is ideal for canoeing, kayaking and swimming. Powerboats are not allowed on the serene lake peppered with little islands. Horne Lake Regional Park has canoe and kayak rentals and is a beautiful place for hiking. Both Spider and Horne Lakes are located about 15 minutes inland from Qualicum Beach. Cameron Lake is nestled between Qualicum Beach and Port Alberni and has a sandy beach for swimming. 16

The Brant Wildlife Festival celebrates nature, and particularly the Brant geese as they rest and feed on the shores of Parksville Qualicum Beach. The festival takes place in March and April, and involves nature tours, bird watching expeditions and more.

Stroll along a lush, forested trail lined with towering Douglas fir, cedar, hemlock and maple trees. Cross the two bridges and experience nature’s power as stunning waterfalls blast over rocks and descend down into the canyon. .

Qualicum Beach Heritage Forest

Walk the trails through this 50-acre property in Qualicum Beach and you can’t help but take on the serenity of the forest. The protected area has rare plants and pockets of 400 year-old Coastal Douglas fir trees along with Western red cedar, Hemlock, Grand fir and Sitka spruce.

Take your pick. Care to stroll in a mountain valley, through a coastal Douglas fir ecosystem, or through rustic grassy meadows? Visit our Museums The Qualicum Beach Museum is a historic building featuring an extensive and world-renowned palaeontology exhibit, along with captivating First Nations’ and social history exhibits. The latter includes ten-minute video interviews with early pioneers, and features photos from their lives in the area many decades ago.

The Parksville Museum and Archives has a collection of early artifacts and the property houses a number of heritage buildings used by the first settlers in the area. There’s the French Creek Post Office open from 1888 to 1912, the McMillan Log House built in 1885 in Errington and the Montrose School depicting school life in the early 1900s including some original desks. The Coombs Museum has photos, memorabilia and artifacts, which illustrate and chronicle the lives of the early settlers of Coombs. This includes an antique bedroom set that once furnished a tourist chalet at the east end of Cameron Lake. CPR Regional Trail This historic trail was built in 1912 by the Canadian Pacific Railway to service guests at its Cameron Lake Resort. The trail winds uphill from Highway 4 through private forest lands to the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District’s park, which was previously a ski hill. It takes about four hours to get to the old ski hill, and about halfway up there is a fantastic view of the lush land below. The entire trail is about 10 km with an elevation gain of 1,000 meters. Park at the Cameron Lake day-use area and cross the highway to access the trailhead. See the tours & rentals directory on page 69 for guided hikes. Milner Gardens and Woodland A garden-lovers paradise, this 70-acre seaside garden is filled with trails and gardens featuring the colourful bounty of the seasons. The property is perched on the edge of a bluff that looks out to the expansive Strait of Georgia. An impressive collection of rhododendrons can be found along the trails along with beautiful cyclamen, trilliums and much more. Enjoy traditional tea service in the quaint house where the Queen of England once stayed. 20

Places to visit: • Learn about the wild animals of the region at Errington’s North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre. It is open daily March through October. • Tamer animals can be found, and even petted, a bit further down the road at Tiger Lily Farm. • Englishman River Falls Provincial Park is the highlight for many visitors to this part of the region where they find easy wilderness hiking and spectacular waterfalls. • Peruse local produce and crafts at the Errington Farmer’s Market at the Community Park, next to the War Memorial Hall on Errington Road. This summer market also has live local music. • Surely visitors to the area have heard of the Goats on the Roof. Coombs Country Market is where you’ll find them. Famous for its Old Country Market, the shops in this area can best be described as eclectic. • Other flying creatures can be found at Butterfly World and Gardens, with its dazzling array of insects, reptiles and flowers. • Take a dip in Cameron Lake and see if you can spot the Loch Ness monster-like creature that has been sighted for centuries. • Stop at MacMillan Provincial Park for the 800-year-old trees towering over 80 metres to get a hint of what BC forests used to be like and you’ll understand where the park’s more familiar name comes from: Cathedral Grove.

Nanoose Bay Nanoose Bay has some incredible day hikes, among towering old growth fir and twisted red arbutus trees. Nanoose Bay is located at the South end of the Parksville Qualicum Beach region. The highlights of the Highway 19 route through Nanoose Bay include the Arbutus Meadows Event and Equestrian Centre and the world’s tallest gnome (7.91m), now recognized by The Guinness Book of World Records. If you want to experience all Nanoose Bay has to offer, take the scenic route on Northwest Bay Road through the heart of the community.

Stop in the quaint Red Gap commercial hub for a coffee break or some grocery shopping. At Powder Point Road you can take a short hike up The Notch to admire Garry Oak and Arbutus meadows, and spectacular views of the Strait of Georgia and across to the mainland. Nanoose Bay is also home to the Fairwinds Golf Club, marinas, recreation facilities, and hidden beaches. Moorecroft Regional Park, our newest regional park, has amazing trails through remote forest and along rocky shores.
