REPORT SUGGESTS . . .
4 schools to close Elementaries in Parksville, Qualicum, Coombs on block LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com
School District 69 administration staff is recommending the closure of Parksville Elementary, Qualicum Beach Elementary, Winchelsea Elementary and French Creek Community School in Coombs. The recommended plan would eliminate middle schools in the district altogether and instead run Kindergarten through Grade 7 at remaining elementary and middle schools and Grade 8 through 12 at both high schools, Kwalikum Secondary School and Ballenas Secondary School. The draft recommendation was presented to trustees and the public Thursday evening by the Superintendent of Schools Rollie Koop and Secretary Treasurer Erica Bailey. If the recommendations are given the green light by trustees tonight at the regular board meeting (7 p.m., Parksville city council chambers), a 90-day public consultation period will start. The earliest a motion would be passed to act on the recommendations would be April 29 and changes could occur in the district by September 2014, although district staff said Thursday that would be tight. The plan would save an estimated $1,230,000 annually and gain 19 per cent in facility utilization. Currently, the district is facing a $3.6 million budget deficit over the next five years, a substantial underutilization of district schools, and a declining enrolment that isn’t expected to reverse for at least 10 years. Members of the public were allowed to pose questions at the Thursday night meeting but not give comments. Anna Sjoo’s children currently go to Qualicum Beach Elementary School and she said it’s important to retain that school which is the heart of the community. See QBES, page A7

The 48th Super Bowl will take place in East Rutherford, New Jersey and will be a battle between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks. With a good chunk of Seahawks fans in the area, there will be plenty of cheering on the “home team” in Parksville Qualicum Beach. If you’re looking for a place to
catch the action, we’ve found a few spots that will have all sorts of entertainment to go along with the game on Sunday (3:30 p.m. kick-off ). Tickets are just about sold out at both the Rod & Gun and The French Creek Marine Pub. Each venue has been hot spots for the Super Bowl over the last decade and will be once again this year. A $10 ticket gets you into the Rod & Gun, where a “Tail Gate Buffet” and
a half-time hot dog eating contest are scheduled. There are big prizes up for grabs too, including a trip to Las Vegas, a 50-inch TV, jerseys and much more. The French Creek Pub will be sold out once again, as it has been for most of the 20 years of hosting a Super Bowl event. There will be a field goal kicking contest at half time and a reverse draw will take place as well, with the chance to win a ton of great prizes. See FAMILY OPTIONS, page A4

New head of intelligence from Qualicum
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has appointed Qualicum Beach resident Deborah Grey as the chair of the Security Intelligence Review Committee. Harper made the announcement after the weekend resignation of Chuck Strahl. “Mr. Strahl has submitted his resignation to me, and I have accepted it, effective immediately,” Harper said in a news release. “In the interim, Deborah Grey will act as chair until a new chair is appointed. With the appointment of Ms. Grey as chair of the Security Intelligence Review Committee, there will be no gap in the review of CSIS’s activities or in addressing complaints from the public.” According to the federal government’s release, the Security Intelligence Review Committee is an independent, external review body which reports to the Parliament of Canada on the operations of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. Grey became the Reform Party’s first MP when she won a byelection in Alberta in 1989. Her first legislative assistant was a young Harper. Gray was an MP until 2004. She was also interim leader of the Canadian Alliance in 2000, the first woman in Canadian history to become the Leader of the Opposition. She was Western chair of the Conservative Party’s campaign in the 2006 election, in which Harper became prime minister. — NEWS Staff, with files from Wikipedia and debgrey.com

Pacific Brimm employee Tanya Garreck has a look at the results of the vandalism in the courtyard of the Parksville business last week.
VANDALISM AT PARKSVILLE COFFEE SHOP
Owner cites bigger picture JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com
A “pointless act of destruction” last week has a business owner and former city councillor calling for more amenities for youth in Parksville. The courtyard of Pacific Brimm coffee shop was vandalized Wednesday between 8:40 p.m. and 9:05 p.m. by what police have described as “young men.” Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman told The NEWS there is video footage of the crime. “They were throwing plants around and smashing stuff up,” said Foreman, who also said a forensic identification team worked the site Thursday. The culprits did not go inside the building of the business, said Foreman. “Hopefully it’s just a matter of time before we catch up with these two young men.” Pacific Brimm owner and former city councillor (2005-2011) Teresa Patterson took to the Brimm’s Facebook page and her own Facebook page to express her thoughts about the crime and she also spoke with The NEWS. “I’m sharing one of the worst days of my life not for sympathy, but because at the end of this day I’m disappointed,” Patterson said. “I’m still upset, but it’s the lack of amenities for youth, that result in pointless acts of destruction. I still will
blame their parents and a community. Because I truly believe in that saying that it takes a community to raise a child.” Patterson couldn’t put a firm dollar figure on the damage but said it was “in the thousands.” She also said there was some damage to totem poles that were pulled down, art created by Bill Helin, renowned First Nations artist from B.C. whose accomplishments include designing the patch worn by astronauts on the U.S. space shuttle Columbia in 1996. She also said this is the fourth instance of vandalism at the store since she bought the business in August of last year. “ . . . I love this little city,” Patterson said and wrote. “But we are failing this community’s youth — sports are not enough and summer only lasts three months. There is a lack of businesses here that welcome youth or cater to them. This senseless act of vandalism occurred at 8:40 p.m. on a Wednesday night.” Patterson said because she has the offenders on video she believes they will be caught. But she is also pointing the finger at the parents of the alleged offenders. “I still think their parents should be held accountable, but I’m not as upset as I was this morning thanks to the support of this community.”

Speaker says organic doesn’t necessarily equal nutritious Popular event opens at 10 a.m. at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com

Kathleen Millar measures the nutritional value of a zucchini using a brix metre, a diagnostic tool she will be discussing at her keynote presentation during the 12th annual Seedy Saturday event Feb. 1.
Cultivating Soil Solutions owner Kathleen Millar is on a mission to educate people about “how to buy and grow better buy organics.” Millar is the first keynote speaker at the upcoming Seedy Saturday event in Qualicum Beach. Her presentation — the Elephant on Your Table; Organic doesn’t always mean nutritious — will look at soil quality, shopping smart and growing for yourself. “Organic isn’t always more nutritious,” said Millar. “There seems to be a misconception that organic food equals nutritious food.” But she said organic does not guarantee quality. “It’s the process which is being ‘certified organic,’ not necessarily the end product,” said Millar. “They’re not certifying the quality.” Millar goes on to say that often consumers can purchase two different vegetables both certified organic, one which is nutrient dense and one which is not, pay the same price and never know the difference. So how do we find out? Millar religiously uses something called a brix metre, a test which is able to reflect the nutritional quality of food based on a small juice sample. “There is a correlation between your brix metre results and how nutrient dense your food is, and how nutrient dense your food is can be linked to how nutrient rich your soil is,” explains Millar. “In that roundabout way I’m trying to get people to care about soil
and better understand their gardening results.” Millar said when she first started using a brix metre to measure the quality of her food she realized half the produce she was bringing home “wasn’t worth eating” and some was “actually so poor it was having a negative effect on my body.” Since then, Millar has become increasingly passionate about soil. In an effort to cultivate a solution to nutrient-depleted soil she offers a custom built kit which includes a blend of minerals specific to your soil. Clients are asked to send in a sample of their soil (approx. two cups), which Millar analyses thoroughly before customizing a mineral-blend “prescription.” Depending on the soil you are working with, Millar’s soil-specific solution should help your garden flourish byway of higher nutrient-dense produce, better tasting results, longer shelf life, higher resistance to diseases and a lower freezing point. “This is my solution for backyard growers,” said Millar. “People are going through all the work of gardening so they minds as well be growing something worthwhile.” To learn more about brix tests, soil quality and the nature of organic food come see Millar’s presentation at 10.30 a.m. She will be speaking at the 12th annual Seedy Saturday event on Feb. 1 at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre. Alongside Millar, Arzeena Hamir and Kathy Claxton will also be keynote presenters. The event will see more than 70 vendors, a Farmer’s Market, seed swap, Milner Garden’s Shoots with Roots children’s program, door prizes and raffles. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. Admission by donation.

The results will be forwarded to the ongoing provincial conversation, which will form the development of a ‘white paper’ meant to reflect the voice of British Columbians. “This is about inclusion for all,” Jennings said, pointing out that as the population ages accessibility is important to everyone. For more information and to participate in the provincial conversation visit http://engage.gov.bc.ca/disabilitywhitepaper/.
In response to the provincial government looking at ways to reduce barriers and increase accessibility, the Oceanside Accessibility Committee held a stakeholders meeting to provide local input. “We were encouraged as a region to provide input so we put together our own project,” said OAC chair Susan Jennings. To that end, they hired their own facilitator and invited key figures, including representatives of local municipalities and groups representing the chambers, construction, downtown and tourism associations and groups involved in accessibility issues to a meeting last Thursday at the Sunrise Ridge Resort. “Children can walk anywhere, they can be with the seniors, they can learn anywhere in the community within walking distance. In this proposal you’re putting them in Qualicum Beach Middle School where it’s 4.3 kilometers (away) but then cutting access to the community.” Sjoo said there are families who want to move into Qualicum Beach, like herself, and they want their kids to go to QBES. Her question was whether the administration staff had considered the idea of community learning, which is so evident at QBES. Koop said he didn’t disagree with her but there are also a host of advantages to children attending Qualicum Beach Middle School, which is a newer facility, he said. “I think we have some models out there where it’s not the placement of the building that governs whether or not they are community-based experiences, it’s the creativity and resourcefulness of the teachers who are there and the parent community that supports that.” Worst condition Qualicum Beach Elementary School is in the worst condition in the district, according to the Facility Condition Index, a benchmark the province uses to compare the relative condition of schools. This is because it has $3 million in deferred maintenance costs needed to be done, it has the highest operating costs because of its age and lack of energy efficient features, and there’s no fire suppression system, which is true of the other elementary schools slated for closing as well, Koop said. The majority of students at QBES get dropped off or ride a bus, which suggests transportation to QBMS wouldn’t cause too much hardships for those families, Koop said. He added that 40 per cent of students at QBES come from different catchment areas. Qualicum Beach Mayor Teunis Westbroek echoed Sjoo’s support for keeping QBES open and asked why the board of education doesn’t close mid-
dle schools instead. “For me, personally, I feel (QBES) is part of the heart of our community and so my question is are there other values other than just costs and deferred savings?” Westbroek asked where the school board plans on finding the rest of the $2.4 million to make up its shortfall over five years, and suggested he might give some alternative scenarios where more money could be found.
I feel (QBES) is part of the heart of our community and so my question is are there other values other than just costs and deferred savings? MAYor tEUnis WEstBroEK
Koop said that his administration team believes the programs at QBES like Munchkinland, Storybook Village and the Alphabet Garden are community assets and therefore they want to explore some other uses at that site that could keep those resources available to the public. If school facilities are sold the district gets to use 25 per cent for capital costs of its choosing and ministerial permission would need to be made for the board to spend the remaining 75 per cent. But facilities don’t necessarily need to be sold, Bailey said. David Osborn, a district counsellor who has worked in the area since the late 1970s, said he respectfully disagrees with the option chosen by the administration staff. He said he and other middle school educators in the district were excited about a different option that was being considered by community members at recent meetings where schools would be reconfigured to include middle schools with grades 4 through 7. “And I know there are elementary educators excited about primary elementary where we can focus on play and social development, where we
could come in line more with the B.C. learning plan.” He asked if the model of K-7 and Grades 8-12 was a fait accompli or if there was still a possibility of exploring the idea of keeping middle schools alive. Koop said if trustees vote to pass a motion to act on the recommendations in April, they will enter into a 90-public consultation period beginning next week, with an open mind. “We still have the latitude, you still have the latitude to shape the trustees perspective through that 90-day consultation period,” said Koop. The plan Koop and Bailey presented has PASS/Woodwinds relocating to the former Board Office at the Family Place Site and False Bay Elementary school running K-9. WHErE tHEY WiLL Go Students from French Creek Community School would be relocated to either Errington Elementary or the Qualicum Beach Middle School site (which would both be K-7) and students from Parksville Elementary School would be relocated to Springwood Middle School, which would have dual track French Immersion K-7. Students from Qualicum Beach Elementary School would be relocated to the Qualicum Beach Middle School site or Arrowview Elementary School (both which would become K-7) and students from Winchelsea Elementary School would relocate to Oceanside, Springwood or Arrowview schools. Provisions would be made to keep students from having to go back to elementary school if they are already in a middle school. Koop cleared up a misconception that classes would be cramped, instead all the teachers would move with the students, keeping class sizes the same as they are currently but filling up underused schools with students and teachers. Comments can be emailed to the school board at facilities2014@sd69. bc.ca.

School closures
E
lected officials and top-level administrators cannot view the public’s increased need for consultation as a nuisance. At the same time, certain factions of the public cannot keep screaming for more consultation, or complaining they want more and more input, just because they don’t like the ultimate decisions. Closing schools is a big deal. We don’t believe you could find one school board trustee or administrator who relishes the thought of closing even one school. There are spaces for 6,000 students in this district. There are 4,000 students in this district. We are told those numbers aren’t going to improve for at least the next 10 years. The last time the issue of school closures raised its head, the public felt blindsided. And from what we can remember, rightfully so. That is not the case this time. The school board and administration have gone above and beyond to inform and listen to the public this time around. Numerous public meetings and calls for input have dominated our pages for months. Frankly, if you didn’t know this was coming, if you weren’t aware the school district wanted to hear from you, then you haven’t been paying attention. The recommendations for specific closures are now out there, as detailed in our story today and reported first on pqbnews.com. Trustees will speak to those recommendations tonight (7 p.m. in the Parksville council chambers at city hall). The closure of any school can be an emotional issue for community members, we get that. Schools are often the social gathering point for a town or neighbourhood, especially when they are centrally located. But the writing is on the wall (the demographics, both now and for the next decade). What would be helpful now is a look forward, some ideas about what can be done with closed schools. If trustees and administrators drag their heels on this, if they allow schools to become boarded-up, grafitti-laden eyesores used by squatters and partiers, then they have neglected their duties to their communities. As painful as school closures can be, perhaps some positives can come from the community or private-enterprise use of these facilities. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters Lazy history Columnist Arthur Black (The NEWS Jan 21) is a gifted humorist but a lazy historian. A simple Google search will reveal numerous occasions where consensus science ran afoul, chief among them: the world is flat, man-made flight is impossible and ulcers are a result of stress. Those who bucked the consensus were lampooned, dismissed or discredited. Luckily they found the courage to confront the arrogance of those proclaiming that science in such matters was settled. If we view climate change as our enemy, we will always be defeated, for climate will always change. Natural climate change is frequent, often extreme and sometimes rapid. Should we be surprised then if Mother Nature feels no obligation to co-operate with man-made climate models? Black’s 95 per cent continues to dwindle as we are faced with some harsh realities: average global temperatures have flattened, polar ice caps are returning, and sea levels are not rising (Kiribati’s troubles arise more from naturally occurring king tides and coastal erosion). By all means let us be good stewards of the earth, but do we really think we can save the planet with our current crop of earth evangelists? Recently Neil Young gave a concert in Calgary while five large transport trucks (for his gear) ran idling the whole time, not to be outdone by the private jet that awaited his departure. And hey, doesn’t he own a ranch? Victor Hugo once said: “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and

CLarion won’t heLp I am saddened by the news of the closure of stores in Qualicum Beach, but unfortunately the projects mentioned in editor John Harding’s recent editorial will not help the problem. Expensive housing like the Clarion and Pheasant Glen may bring in extra revenue for the town (once we have paid off the extra costs and “subsidies” involved, of course), but these projects will not necessarily produce more local shoppers. The Clarion could attract “investment” ownership, where the unit remains empty. And given the number of Qualicum Beach residents, even the less affluent, who spend several months away from home each year, why should we assume that the more wealthy will stay here year-round? If we really want young families in Qualicum, we need housing that is suitable for them — the sort of smaller homes that are being built near Wembley Mall, for instance. Expensive condominiums or mini-estates are not what will help the town grow and thrive. But even then, shopping locally is not a guarantee. A second grocery store might
help attract more shoppers in general, but the malls and box stores in Nanaimo remain a constant draw. Part of the problem with an aging population is that the older one gets, the less one needs new clothing or household items, while younger retirees are more likely to be snowbirds who acquire those items down south. There are certainly plenty of people in the area already who could shop locally but choose not to, for whatever reason; and until there is more visitor accommodation there will not be many tourists to add to the number of shoppers. So the store closures are part of a sadly complex problem, but using them as an excuse for promoting these two particular development projects is inappropriate.

This same family is now before council asking for rezoning of their property. Willie contends there is no conflict of interest if he votes on the issue. Legally speaking, he is probably correct. Morally speaking, he is dead wrong.

This is in response to the article on the socalled seaweed harvest by reporter Candace Wu in the Jan. 23 edition of The NEWS. The comments by the Ministry of Agriculture on this harvest can only be described as pathetic. Gary Caine speaking for the government totally dismisses the research done by four well-respected scientists with more than 100 years experience with ecological and environmental matters that concern our area. They are all warning us and the government that this is a destructive practice and will have long-term affects on the coastal waters of Baynes Sound. The government totally ignores this study and instead is partially funding a grad student to study the seaweed harvest over the next three years. These scientists have done this research with no hidden agenda other than concern for the ecology of this area and the impact this harvest will have plus saving the tax payers thousands of dollars in research as a bonus. This government is so uninformed that they do not realize after many reminders from myself and others that environmental studies are done before the damage is done, not after. It’s very simple but the Ministry of Agriculture can’t seem to get it. I am concerned about our environment and have not even mentioned the well-founded criticism of tracked vehicles on our beaches, diesel fumes, traffic, trucks, trailers destroying vegetation trees and bushes etc., for five months of the
year, all without any consultation with residents or any scientific studies. Where is democracy? Not in Deep Bay. GreG And normA Boulton Bowser/Deep Bay
WHy WasH rocks? I am writing because I can’t see the reasoning in washing rocks that are cemented into the medians of Parksville’s streets. It is pretty clear that we are in for another water shortage this year. I am wondering then, that maybe our city is not aware of that? Or is washing rocks a way of keeping people employed? I am assuming that pressure washing the rocks is to remove moss. We live in a rain forest, where mosses and other ground covers is prevalent. They add to the natural beauty. So then there will be moss growing again, and again. Back to the usage of water, and the fact that so far we have had a very dry winter. I suppose that we who live within the town’s limits will be on water restrictions starting in February this year? I just had to comment on this, and the fact that our city decided that having Christmas lights on the trees cost too much. These trees have been conveniently planted near electrical outlets. Can’t figure that one out. If we’re keeping people employed, then wouldn’t that have been a fun job? dAle Kethler Parksville

ON DISPLAY AT GALLERY@QUALICUM ART SUPPLY
Programmer loves to paint about nothing His drawings take anywhere from a few hours to 100 hours to complete LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com
Similar to Jerry Seinfeld’s TV show, Peter Leclerc’s paintings are about nothing. “Because of that, there’s a real freedom brought on by them,” said the Qualicum Beach artist. Leclerc has completed at least one painting every day for 11 years, and that’s on top of his full-time job as a software programmer. He gets up an hour early on week days to give his art the best hour of his day, he said, and he’s back at it after work for at least a couple hours. He’s also a musician. Leclerc said his free-hand drawings, using pastel and coloured pencils, avoid subject matter and in that way they beg the viewer to engage to search within themselves to identify them. The drawings take anywhere from a few hours to 100 hours to complete. A number of these drawings are hanging for sale
at the Gallery @ Qualicum Art Supply, and many feature circular shapes. These are naturally found everywhere, Leclerc said, like the logarithmic spiral, a spiral curve with statistically self-similar parts which is often found in nature. “I find it to be quite natural and pleasing, and to me it makes sense, that mathematics would have resonance in the physical world at this level.” Leclerc likes to do something while he’s drawing, like watch TV or play Trivial Pursuit, and that way it takes his mind off the drawing and lets the artist within come out, he said. “What I’m trying to do is to occupy what I call the accountant who wants to insinuate into every transaction and in so doing it messes up the artist because it tries to supersede it.” But Leclerc didn’t always focus his artistic mind on this type of work. Born and raised in Montreal, Leclerc used to paint realism and his art was featured in shows in that city. He used oil paints and created stipple paintings, a technique that creates patterns and images using tiny single coloured dots, among other works.
LISSA ALEXANDER PHOTO
Peter Leclerc’s abstract drawings are currently hanging for sale at the Gallery @ Qualicum Art Supply in Qualicum Beach.
His art took the back burner as he focused on work and marriage, but in the 1990s he reinvented himself. In his artwork he decided he no longer wanted to simply “report” what he was seeing. Instead he wanted to get rid of any subject matter and let
his subconscious guide him. A couple years ago he had an art show on the Island, his first since 1986, and his show in Qualicum Beach is the second he’s had since his reinvention. Although Leclerc enjoys making art that’s not why he does it.
“I do like it but it’s why I’m here. Doing this stuff is really my mission. I just do it. I’m not happy if I don’t do it.” View Leclerc’s detailed drawings at the Gallery @ Qualicum Art Supply, located at 101-206 First Ave. W in Qualicum Beach.
YOUTH ROCK BAND PROJECT
Lessons aimed at success LISSA ALEXANDER
reporter@pqbnews.com
LISSA ALEXANDER PHOTO
Sharon Tomczyk and Mike Bauche are facilitating a Youth Rock Band Project at the Soundgarden in Coombs. The application deadline is Feb. 7.
A new Youth Rock Band project will not only give youth a creative outlet but will teach young musicians how to become successful in the music industry. The program, presented by the Arrowsmith Community Recreation Association (ACRA), is being held at the Soundgarden in Coombs, led my musicians Mike Bauche and Sharon Tomczyk. It will also feature other music professionals and musicians who will work with the youth. Instead of focusing on learning music and performing, this project will focus on the importance of working together as a team. “One of the biggest reasons for bands falling apart and not sticking together is they don’t get along and there are conflicts,” said Bauche. “And that’s what ends up breaking them down.” This program will take 12 applicants aged 12-17 who currently play an instrument (any skill level) and they will form a band.
They will explore songwriting, rhythm, band dynamics, the music business, sound engineering and recording, live performance methods and more. Bauche is a singer-songwriter originally from Saskatoon who has been performing for over 12 years. He hosts the open mic night at the Vancouver Island University student pub and his most recent album with a female vocalist in Saskatoon is called The Field and the Sea, which came out in 2012. Bauche is also part of the Arrowsmith Recreation Team. Tomczyk is the lead singer in an alternative rock band called Counting Time, which is about to launch its debut album. She is also co-founder of the Soundgarden where she lead a jam and runs a community choir. Thanks to an RDN grant, accessed in collaboration with ACRA, the cost for the 10-week program is only $25 per youth. The Soundgarden is also co-sponsoring the program to keep that fee low. Kathy Figueroa went to high school in Qualicum
Local poetry enthusiasts may want to head to the Qualicum Beach Library. Ontario poet Kathy Figueroa has donated copies of two collections of poetry — Paudash Poems and Flowertopia — to the Qualicum Beach Branch of the Vancouver Island Regional Library. These books contain most of her poems that have
entertained newspaper readers in Bancroft, Ontario, for many years. Flowertopia, which was published in early January of this year, also showcases her photography. Figueroa, who resided in and around Parksville in the 1970s, attended high school in Qualicum Beach. She said she will be delighted that her books will be on the shelves of the local public library there. Contact Kathy Figueroa at flowertopia.studio@gmail.com. — NEWS Staff

to provide input, service and advice to town council and staff in the creation, development and delivery of the community-wide one-day celebration for residents and visitors, known as Beach Day, held annually in July. All appointments are on a volunteer basis and members serve without remuneration. In order to be con-
sidered, please submit a letter with a brief resume, no later than 4:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 31 to: Corporate Administrator, Town of Qualicum Beach, P.O. Box 130, #201 – 660 Primrose Street Qualicum Beach, V9K 1S7, or e-mail: tcoates@qualicumbeach — Submitted by Town of Qualicum Beach
Application deadline extended until Feb. 7 continued from page B1
Local youth advisors chose this program out of many applications as one they would like to see in the community. At the end of the program in May, during National Youth Week, the new band will do a public performance. To apply, youth need to describe their musical experience and abilities, list the instruments they play and
describe briefly why they would like to take part in the program. Some instruments can be made available. The deadline has been extended to Feb. 7. Download the application form from the Soundgarden website http://www.thesoundgarden.org/ lessons-and-workshops or on the facebook page called Youth Rock
Band Project. Email the completed registration forms to Mike at: prairysurf@hotmail.com. The program runs March 2 to April 22 on Sunday afternoons at the Soundgarden from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information email Mike at the email listed above or Sharon at: sharon@thesoundgarden.org.

The Save-On-foods Oceanside Generals invited the public to a free skate on January 12 at Oceanside Place. More than 100 boys and girls laced up their skates and took part in a small scrimmage with some of the talented Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League athletes. The Coombs Junction Wellness Centre still has many of the practitioners who were part of the Wakoda Wellness Centre. Sara Oliver of Living Well Body Works has taken over the facility. Sarah who offers massage and teaches yoga says she wants the centre to be known as a movement studio. There are several yoga classes offered by some great teachers and Sara said she welcomes practitioners who offer other modalities to the space. Sara said they are bringing back parent and baby yoga and if you are looking for a new exercise regime, check out Sara’s upcoming Yogilates classes that blend yoga and Pilates. The centre offers meditation on Mondays under a pay what you can system and Cora Schiller is currently offering free Bellyfit classes as she works toward her certification. Golfers who arrive at hole #5 (gully hole) at the Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Course (QBMGC) will now get to read about the history of the water hazard that has claimed many of their golf balls. Beach Creek runs through the links and thanks to the stewardship of the Qualicum Beach Streamkeepers and the golf course, it is now both a source of irrigation water for the golf course and a productive fish habitat. David James of Streamkeepers said the creek begins at the Pheasant Glen Golf Resort and winds it way through the heritage forest, where fish eggs are laid. The small fish feed in the pond at QBMGC and make their way to the ocean under Memorial Avenue through culverts. He said every few years the golf course excavates silt from pond and the streamkeepers safely remove the fish as well as hundreds of golf balls. Variety the Children’s Charity has been Qualicum Beach Pharmasave’s charity of choice for the last 15 years. Their 2014 Gold Heart campaign will continue into February and on Valentine’s Day the cosmetics department is offering makeovers for a donation to Variety. To book and appointment call 250-752-3011. Chef Norman Mueller and his team put on a great spread for their Robbie Burns dinner at The Gardens in Qualicum Beach. The meal began with a traditional haggis ceremony. Josh Dieleman of the Mount Arrowsmith Pipe Band piped in the pudding along with Food Services Director Marlene Charbonneau, Chef Norman and fourth floor resident Kenneth Appleby. Ken who is from Scotland gave the traditional address to the haggis and the toast to the lassies. The spry 90 year old wore a kilt that his mother had bought for him in 1977. His daughter Kathryn Miller who was born in Dundee Scotland did the reply on behalf of the lassies. She wore a Dundee tartan and said the sash had belonged to her mother.
The players who make up the roster of the Save-OnFoods Oceanside Generals gave back to the community on January 12. 125 kids showed up to meet the players and join them in a small scrimmage. These athletes (left to right) Luc Gravel, Adam Jacklyn, Ben Tisdale and Ben Gravel were among the youth who got some ice time with the Generals.
Cora Schiller of Shasta Hoop Fitness has been offering hooping classes in Qualicum Beach and the surrounding areas for many years. Cora is now getting her Bellyfit certification and is teaching the fitness classes at the Coombs Junction Wellness Centre formerly the Wakoda Wellness Centre.
A brand new plaque has been placed at hole #5 at the Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Course (QBMGC) as part of the 2013 centennial. The Beach Creek sign was unveiled on January 23 by: (left to right) Qualicum Beach Mayor Teunis Westbroek, Qualicum Beach Streamkeepers President David James and QBMGC president Doug Courtice.
Variety The Children’s Charity telethon raised nearly 6.7 million dollars this past weekend. Qualicum Beach Pharmasave is selling Gold Heart pins to raise money for Variety. On Jan 24 cosmetics manager Jennifer Spratt gave Hayley Seline a free gift from the wheel of prizes for buying a pin and donating to their favourite charity.
A tribute to Scotland’s beloved bard Robbie Burns was held at The Gardens in Qualicum Beach January 25. Josh Dieleman of the Mount Arrowsmith Pipe Band piped in the haggis carried by Chef Norman Mueller. Food Services Director Marlene Charbonneau carried the whisky and expatriate Scotsman Kenneth Appleby gave the toast to the pudding and the opening address.
The Gardens in Qualicum Beach has some delightful residents including 90 year old Scottish born Kenneth Appleby. His address to the haggis and toast the lassies was a hit at the Robbie Burns dinner January 25. His daughter Kathryn Miller did some research before writing her the toast to the laddies from her dad’s book of poems by Robbie Burns.

MOBILE OPTOMETRIST GLASS INSTALLER We’ll come to you!
I C YOU MOBILE OPTOMETRY Phone 250-586-3746 Email icyouoptometry@shaw.ca Mailing PO Box 25001 Parksville, BC V9P 2X2 Website www.icyouoptometry.com
I C You Mobile Optometry is a unique business in operation for almost two years, offering full eye exams in the comfort of your own home. Dr. Ian Scholfield, an Optometrist and Carolynne, his wife, a pharmacist and Certified Diabetes Educator, offer a wealth of health knowledge and enthusiasm. Their friendly dispositions put people at ease, with the exam being both relaxed and professional. There is no obligation to purchase glasses and for those who are unable to get out we can offer information on mobile dispensers. For those who have not used this versatile service, many questions arise: How can a business like this work, when in a regular optometry office the equipment is so big and bulky? The equipment used is small and portable, which means it is much less intimidating, which is great for young children. The eye doctor works around the patient, which is great for those with mobility issues or bed-bound. The equipment is carried into the room where the patient is examined. A chair and table are usually all that is needed. It is so flexible that exams have been possible at the Intensive Care Unit, in businesses and on a patio! But can such an eye exam be as accurate? Yes, the equipment is all regulated and the techniques used are common to regular practice procedures. Patients are able to gauge their vision by looking at familiar objects in their own surroundings. There is also more one-on-one time with the eye doctor as fewer patients are seen. I can see fine, so why do I need an eye exam? After the initial sight-testing portion has been done, many patients think the eye exam is over. However, once the doctor looks into the eyes, many health conditions can be seen even if the vision is ‘20/20’. The eye is more than the gateway to the soul, being the only place you can see active blood vessels without surgery. Many preventable causes of blindness can be detected, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration amongst others. Evidence of diabetes, high blood-pressure and raised cholesterol may also be detected from an eye exam. It is especially important for children to have their eyes examined - often a minor problem corrected as a child can help to prevent more permanent issues as an adult.
Benefits of Vinyl Windows Window engineering has changed considerably, with vinyl windows being among the best available options. Here are a few of the leading benefits of vinyl replacement windows that you may want to take into consideration: Vinyl windows require no painting. Wood windows require constant maintenance and upkeep. You would need to deal with the rot that is so prevalent in our wet environment.
Tom Andres
250-752-5312 142 Fern Rd. E. Qualicum Beach info@northpacificwindow.ca
Vinyl windows can help to lower your utility bills. Our vinyl windows incorporate LowE3 and argon gas to keep the heat in all winter and the sun’s heat out in the summer. The money you save will permit the windows to essentially pay for themselves. Vinyl windows enhance the aesthetic value of your home. Properly designed, vinyl replacement windows look much better than aluminum or wood windows. The truth is, they will effectively provide your home with a facelift. Whether you decide on picture, casement, or sliders, they will improve the curb appeal of your home. Vinyl windows increase the value of your home. Home improvements which boost your home’s value are definitely beneficial. That’s why vinyl replacement windows are an excellent investment decision. A home is one of the most significant investments that you make in your lifetime, therefore putting money back into it is undoubtedly wise. Vinyl windows have security features. From their durable glass to powerful locks, vinyl replacement windows really are a substantial improvement to oldstyle aluminum, wood, and steel windows.
Wayne Hupalo, Dan Turner
If you are interested in new windows for your home, then you definitely will want to consider vinyl replacement windows. For quality windows and professional install, windows from Northpacific Window will last for many, many years to come.

HEARING SPECIALIST FINANCIAL ADVISOR Pricing and Technology
Helping You to Navigate Financially in a Changing World.
The cost of hearing aids is the primary reason why people with a hearing loss do not seek treatment.
JON Hearing Instrument Practitioner
JAMIE Hearing Instrument Practitioner
BARBARA Office Manager
Like any consumer product, the more you pay for a hearing instrument the more features you get. The nature and severity of your hearing loss will play a role in determining which hearing instruments can offer the best listening experience. For persons with a less active lifestyle who do not find themselves in demanding listening situations, less expensive hearing aids are often a solid solution. However individuals with a more active and demanding lifestyle may have more success in higher priced aids due to the more sophisticated technology. When purchasing hearing aids, the first step is to have a full hearing evaluation by a qualified hearing professional. Based on your hearing loss, budget, lifestyle and listening demands the hearing professional should assist you in finding what is the best for you. We know that hearing aids are confusing, expensive and a very much unwanted addition in someone’s life. People need hearing aids to help improve the quality of their lives. Sound quality is the most important consideration, but not every technological advancement benefits every hearing loss. Even basic hearing instruments can deliver appropriate sound quality. Parksville and Qualicum Hearing clinics are local, family operated and have been offering quiet, thoughtful and professional solutions to hearing problems for many years- call us- We would like to help you.

Keeping your independence means staying mobile

When mobility is restricted by weakness in your legs or back, a loss of balance or frequent dizziness, getting around your home can be easier said than done. The same goes for moving around outside, what with all those icy driveways, uneven sidewalks and a lack of things to grab onto when you need to stop and catch your breath. No one wants to give up his or her independence. In fact, the best way to remain independent is to remain mobile. But that doesn’t mean taking unnecessary risks that could land you in the hospital! Instead, talk to your doctor. Perhaps a cane or walker is all you need to keep moving. There are other safety measures you can take to remain mobile, such as installing hand railing in strategic spots where you often find you need support: beside the toilet, bathtub, along staircases and in hallways. Avoid using light rugs that can easily bunch up and trip you; instead use heavy, non-slip carpets and rugs that are firmly attached to the floor. Other safety measures include removing furniture that can get in your way, and wherever possible, opt for heavy furniture that can support your weight should you suddenly need to lean against it for support. For example, a heavy chair by your bed can help you get up in the morning.
Greg & Tracy Greenshields (Jamie, Amanda, Matthew)
If your home has a second floor that you can only access with difficulty, it might be time to consider installing an elevating device. It will do the work so you don’t have to.

Brenda GouGh News Contributor
Quitting smoking isn’t easy. If you want to break your nicotine addiction and kick your cigarette habit for good Parksville Pharmasave wants to help. On Jan. 30 from 1 to 5 p.m. you are invited to drop in to talk with Karen Alden of the B.C. Lung Association’s QuitNow program. Alden can provide you with information about a wide range of free support services to help you butt out. She can also show you in a simple breath test how much carbon monoxide is in your blood with her Smokilzer machine. Alden said the test is non-invasive and a great motivational and educational tool for people who want to start a smoke-free life. “It gives a real and current picture of the carbon monoxide levels in their blood at that moment and for someone who smokes cigarettes that can be an eye opener. It tells that person what the impact of smoking has on their health.” Anyone can take the test and Alden said even people who don’t smoke have had some surprising results. “Carbon monoxide is formed through combustion, such as vehicle exhaust, tool exhaust from workshops and fuel burning appliances. Some non-smokers have been categorized in the light smoker range after just spending time in a drive-through at a coffee shop or being with friends who are smoking. It indicates that second hand smoke has as huge impact on health as well.” Alden said the B.C. Lung Association with funding from the Ministry of Health offers a wide range of free tools and services to give people their best chance of quitting cigarettes and staying quit. “A lot of people are familiar with the 811 program which allows you to be eligible for

Some services include: 24-7 phone support with care counsellors and coaches who are trained in tobacco dependence and are very motivational. “They will help develop personal quit smoking programs and build strategies to help that individual based on their lifestyle and get them through those tricky moments,” she said. BUSINESS PrOFILE
More than 10,000 Things and Stuff
Store is in its sixth year of business in Bowser CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com
Perched along the old Island highway, Bowser’s hallmark antique store brims with things and stuff. Which is why the store’s name, Things and Stuff Furniture, is so fitting. “It seemed natural,” said owner Valerie Williams-Parkins, of the name. She remembers how the name came about while chatting with friends at a party in Victoria. “We were just talking and I said, ‘I think I’m going to move up Island and just sell things and stuff.’” she said. “By the next morning it had been decided.” And on Jan. 7, the store celebrated its 6th year in business and Williams-Parkins couldn’t be happier. She estimates Things and Stuff has more than 10,000 items, old and new. The business sells almost anything you can think of, and what it doesn’t have in-store Williams-Parkins said she will track down for you. She has customers I’m the baby of eight write down children so just my place in family and life items they on want had me a collector she what VALERIE WILLIAMS-PARKINS calls a “wish list.” “If you’re looking for something I’ll find it,” she said, noting she is always on the look-out for her client’s wish list items. The most obscure request she recalled was the Moods Readers Digest Record Collection. “I remember thinking I’d never be able to find it,” she said. “And on our next buying trip I came across the collection in an antique store in Hope. I bought it for $2 and I was floored.” Williams-Parkins has always considered herself “an eccentric collector,” part of the reason she finds Things and Stuff instinctual. “I’m the baby of eight children so just my place in family and life had me a collector,” she said. “And even today my brothers and sisters all help feed the shop.”
CANDACE WU PHOTO
Owner Valerie Williams-Parkins estimates she has more than 10,000 items in her Things and Stuff store in Bowser.
Additionally, Williams-Parkins purchases one estate-sale per year from a Qualicum Beach law firm, where she said, “we literally sell every single thing thats in the house from the fridge and stove to the jewellery box.” Most recently, she won a bid for the Executive House Hotel. But her favorite part of the business is the clientele. “Unique things and unique people go hand in hand,” she said. “And the beauty of Bowser is that it’s a real family community.”
And in an effort to give back to the community, Williams-Parkins donates half of the funds from her “scrap metal drop off bin” to a local charity. “I always start off the hot lunch program at Bowser Elementary with a donation,” she said, noting other recipients as the Legion, the Lighthouse Community Hall and Bow Horne Bay fire department. Though Things and Stuff may look modest from the outside, the store itself has six rooms in the front building and five rooms in the furniture house out
back. It also has an outdoor lot filled with old wood stoves, bikes and other outdoor retail. The interior is flushed with unique paintings, vintage chairs, more than 2,000 books, typewriters, clocks, clothes, kitchen supplies and fresh baked cookies among the many novelties. Things and Stuff is located at 6881 Island Highway. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For inquires call 250-757-8815, e-mail or thebestthingsandstuff@gmail.com stop by.

Machete cuts down second opponent Parksville’s Marco ‘Machete’ Viedas was a lot more confident and took fight in TKO T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
Marco ‘Machete’ Viedas cut down his latest opponent to improve his record to 2–0 in impressive fashion at Battlefield Fight League (BFL) 27 in Richmond. Machete won via TKO at the 2:27 mark of the third round. He took the fight to his opponent David Chen in his second bout with BFL and managed to carve out another victory by delivering a nice two-kick combo, followed by a flurry of punches that sent his opponent to the canvas and caused the referee to jump in and stop the fight. “It felt so good to get the finish. I was feeling like I’d have a monkey on my back if I kept having decisions in my fights so it was good,” Viedas said. “It was a great fight all around and I was really happy with the way it finished. Hopefully they’ll (BFL) want me back after an exciting fight like this.” This fight marked the first “official” finish of Viedas’ young career, according to his manager and coach Brett Fee. “It was good because he’s only really finished about two other guys in about 60 taekwondo and amateur kickboxing fights,” Fee said. “You don’t really finish guys like that when you compete in those

sorts of fights so it was good to see. This is what you try to do in these fights so hopefully it’s a sign of things to come.” Machete is looking to jump back into the octagon March 28 for a catch weight
fight. The agreed weight will be at 140 pounds, which is five more than the bantamweight fights Viedas has already had. “It’s just to change things up a bit, so I don’t have to diet all these months in
a row. That way I can ease up a bit and not have to worry about cutting all that weight. It will be a nice change for me but I’ll get back to the bantamweight fights after this one,” Viedas said. It was a big change in terms of nerves for Machete in his second fight compared to his debut fight. With the help of his coaches, fellow MMA and Maximum Fighting Championship Lightweight Champion Graham Spencer, and his sponsors, Island Surf Company, Siege Consulting, Riptide Graphics and Ocean City Tattoo, Viedas felt more at home the second time around. “Huge difference. I had a lot of support and the input I got from Graham was huge. He’s been training down in Sacramento at a great MMA gym there and to be able to learn from him has been priceless,” said Viedas, a former Ballenas Secondary student. “I was a lot more calm this time around. I felt pretty calm through the day and having the team there with me really helped get me through it all.” Machete started right back into his training routine, starting at Jim’s Gym in Parksville. It will be all about preparation for Viedas as he gears up for the March 28 BFL fight.

Generals lose three as they look for playoff spot T yson Taylor
sports@pqbnews.com
The Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals are running out of time as they look to sneak into the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League playoffs. Another three games on the schedule this past week for the Generals resulted in three losses. The Gens were shutout in back to back games against the Nanaimo Buccaneers (4–0) and the Kerry Park Islanders (7–0). Saturday night the Generals dropped a 5–2 decision to the Penninsula Panthers. It’s been a tough go the last two weeks for the Generals as
they deal with being short handed on the defensive end, with captain Travis Flug filling the void left by the departing Chandler Bruyckere. “It’s been an adjustment, for sure,” Flug said. “I like being back there on the defensive end but it’s weird at some points not being able to be up there on the rush like I’m used to. I feel comfortable enough back there though. I played on D when I was in minor hockey so it’s somewhat familiar.” It was another fast start for the Generals at home again as Chase Gaudreault opened the scoring
just over a minute in, his seventh of the season. The Generals managed to hold on to the lead after the first as Evgeuni Makarski turned aside 10 shots from Penninsula in the first period. The newest addition to the Generals, 18-year-old Keegan Hull from Calgary, potted his first goal as a General early in the second period off a nice feed on the rush from Devin Warfield. Hull went straight to the net and Warfield managed to find his teammate to make it 2–0. “It was good to get the first one. I thought it was pretty greasy but it was good,” Hull
said. “Warf made a good play throwing it to the net off the rush and I’m glad I was in the right place at the right time.” That was it for the Generals in terms of offense on this night as Penninsula scored three straight goals to close out the second period and kept the momentum finding the net two more times in the third, including an empty net goal. “I thought we had a really good first period,” said head coach Bill Bestwick. “We played step for step, shot for shot with those guys, especially after a disappointing game against Ker-

ry Park. The second period we turned the puck over inside our own blue line a few times and they started their come back from there. I really liked the effort from the kids though. They played hard and gave Penninsula a good challenge which was nice to see after Friday’s game.” The Generals are back at it this weekend in Comox Friday. Then it’s home on Saturday night to host the league leading Victoria Cougars. With just five games left on their schedule, the Generals need to win, and hope the Saanich Braves continue to lose, to get the last playoff spot.
