Hatzic Ridge development proposal axed Alina Konevski MISSION RECORD

The latest proposal to develop Hatzic Ridge was shot down by district council with a split vote at Monday night’s meeting. “[The proposal] could be precedent setting. It could change the entire nature of Hatzic,” said Coun. Jenny Stevens. Developer Omega and

Associates Engineering Ltd. proposed to build 206 single-family residential units and a 24-unit gated townhome complex in the north Hatzic area of Mission, located at 8977 and 8990 West Edwards St. Each lot would be 0.2 acres. The plan is contrary to the Official Community Plan (OCP), which designates the area as rural residential, and the

developer has applied for an OCP amendment for the area. Omega is the latest in a line of four different developers in the last decade wanting to establish a suburban enclave in the area. The last developer received approval in 2012 for 109 single-family lots, with 0.8 acres each. Omega has district permission

to continue development that conforms with the 2012 zoning and the rural residential OCP designation. Omega representative Ken Radom told council at a presentation: “We’ve served our time. We’ve simply been looking at this thing forever, and we’ve been going around and around the mulberry bush and we’re going to

by attacking somebody else,” Jewell told Hensman. Nundal was absent from the meeting but participated sporadically over speakerphone, that was difficult to make out in chambers. Nundal said the cost of going to court would not be justified because it is highly unlikely the court will find that Hensman was in conflict. Going to court “would be the easy thing to do to get it off the table, but I don’t think that’s the right thing to do.” When it came to vote, Jewell noted the strangeness of having Hensman vote on a matter of which he was a subject. Chief administrative officer Ken Bjorgaard then recommended that council delay the decision until Wednesday, Jan. 22, so that district staff could seek legal advice. Adlem and Luck said advice was not needed.

Hensman asked if he could volunteer to refrain from the vote, to which several councillors first replied, “yes,” another said “I don’t know,” and finally Adlem re-read the relevant Charter line. “The Act clearly says, two-thirds of all council members. Whether you like it or not, you’re still a council member. And that means you have, under the Act, the right to vote,” Adlem told Hensman. Adlem said that if Hensman abstains, the result is a vote “in the affirmative.” Audience member and former councillor Ron Taylor tried to shed light on the Charter from the public seat, to calls of “you’re out of order” from the councillors. Taylor then approached the council table to show a document that he thought would help. In the final comment before the vote, Luck – who supported sending the matter to court –

thing. And I’m wondering what the public is going to say about the whole thing…I’m afraid of what’s going to happen now. I’m afraid of what people are going to say…My concern for Coun. Hensman is that people may come to conclusions without him being able to defend himself.” In a press release Thursday, Hensman has claimed that the cost of going to court would be a “minimum $60,000,” a waste of taxpayer money for the “fishing expedition to try and bring credibility to his (Tilbury’s) false and erroneous claims.” (An early online version of this story and the Jan. 22 print edition of the Abbotsford-Mission News incorrectly indicated that it was council’s decision to allow Coun. Hensman to vote on the motion. The provincial Community Charter Act requires that all councillors must vote. The Abbotsford-Mission News apologizes for any confusion this may have caused.)

the large development. Even though Omega offered to cover all costs of installing water and sewer systems, Sommer was concerned about the potential long-term costs of meeting the needs of hundreds of residents in such a remote area, including the provision of not just basic utilities, but also transportation,

police and fire services, schools and recreation centres. As he noted in a staff report, the proposal is “automobile oriented, isolated” and “does not meet the sustainable planning principles of providing for managed, orderly growth. See missioncityrecord. com for more.

said it was an opportunity for Hensman to clear his name. “I think this is a tough situation for Coun. Hensman, for the rest of council, for CRMG (Citizens for Responsible Municipal Government), and for the public…I think moving forward, as they say, not only do we have to do the right thing, but we have to be seen to do the right thing.” After the vote, several residents stormed out. Janet Chalmers, who ran for council in 2011, said she was not concerned about the potential high cost of going to court. “It should go to trial. It should be figured out whether that man is in conflict or not.” Rhonda Cushnie, executive director of the Mission Downtown Business Association, was concerned about the perception created at the council meeting. “As Tony Luck said, you have to be perceived as doing the right

WE’RE BACK

REPENTANCE IS

GOOD FOR THE SOUL

Bill and Linda are pleased to be back in Mission and invite you to visit their new location for what they are known for….

Psalm 32 is a wonderful psalm about the forgiveness that God displays when we are repentant for our sins. It says in part: “Happy are those whose sins are forgiven, whose wrongs are pardoned. Happy is the man whom the Lord does not accuse of doing wrong and who is free from all deceit. When I did not confess my sins I was worn out from crying all day long. Then I confessed my sins to you; I did not conceal my wrong doings. I decided to confess them to you and you forgave all my sins.” This psalm reflects the great love that God has for us; however, when we sin and have no remorse, we are opposing God. It is important for us to be sorry and repentant for our wrongdoing as soon as we realize that we have sinned. We should ask our Heavenly Father for forgiveness, make an honest effort to refrain from sinning and, whenever possible, try to make amends for whatever wrong we have done. The Bible tells us that God is ever ready to forgive our transgressions, and keep us in His unmerited favor.

There’s a lot you can do a lot in just 15 minutes a day. You could clean the kitchen, check your Facebook page or change your child’s life. It doesn’t take much to set your child off on a lifelong road to enjoying reading. In fact, it can even be fun. That’s the message of this year’s national Family Literacy Day organizers who have made a list of 15 possible ways for parents to support early literacy, including everything from telling a few knock-knock jokes to making a family tree. This year’s Riot of Reading Solutions, the local celebration of the national Family Literacy Day, will be held Jan. 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ecole Mission Central, 7466 Welton St. “It’s going to be another riot of excitement and reading,” said event organizer Elspeth Bowers. Norden the Magician will weave his magic

and there will be plenty of opportunity to get up and dance with Tribal Fusion and the Dasmesh School Bhangra Dancers. A group of Chinese international students will give a taste of the arts from their country, and people will have a chance to join in some pow wow drumming with Holly Gallant and friends. Master of ceremony Paul Horn will weave his storytelling magic and word wizardry. Kids can have their face painted, get a balloon animal from Neon the Clown, adopt a rare word, write a Mad Lib Haiku, or meet their book heroes, Clifford the Big Red Dog and Geronimo Stilton. There will also be information tables by local organizations and businesses that promote literacy and support families in Mission. The event is free and pizza will be served at noon along with a celebratory cake at 2 p.m.

Line up to sign up Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Close to 200 kindergarten-aged kids have been registered to begin a school of choice program in the Mission school district next September. The one-day registration was held Jan. 13, but about a dozen parents chose to spend part of the night outside the school district administration office Sunday to secure a place for their child. The line up started around 10 a.m., said school board vice-chair Jim Taylor who drove by early in the morning on his way to Abbotsford for the day. By the time he returned at 9:30 p.m. there were four people present and more trickled in throughout the night. Taylor set up a display tent, some camping chairs, passed around muffins and hunkered down for the night outside with the rest of the parents. He also handed out numbered cards to secure people’s place in line, but he said the crowd was self-monitoring. “No one could leave without losing their place,” noted Taylor. “If you left, you had to have someone else sit in your place.” By 5 a.m. Monday, school district staff arrived and the crowd was invited into the board office to warm up and begin the paperwork. By the time Taylor left, Edwin S. Richards, the arts-based curriculum school, was nearly full. “We’re suddenly a school district people

want to be in,” commented Taylor. Mission Public Schools has struggled with declining enrolment for years and approved two new schools of choice last year. The second is a traditional school at Hillside Academy, which has also proven popular. This week, parents were mostly signing their young ones up for French Immersion and the arts-based programs because registration for Hillside has been ongoing. This is the last year Taylor expects to see such line ups as the school district is changing its registration process and parents can sign their child up for school as soon as they have a birth certificate in hand. Siblings already in the school will be admitted first, followed by students who registered earliest. There is no guarantee students registered will be attending their school of choice, but as many as possible will be accommodated, said school board chair Edie Heinrichs. There are 93 students signed up for the traditional academy, 45 for French Immersion and 63 for fine arts. A kindergarten class is maxed out at 22 students. “The numbers look good,” said Heinrichs. “There seems to be strong support for the schools of choice.” Parents will know within the next month if their child has been accepted, and those who aren’t can sign up for their neighbourhood schools Feb. 3-7 at the school.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Public interest not well served

Conflict of interest allegations involving elected representatives are unsettling affairs, certainly for the individuals involved and the public in general. The latest development regarding Mission Coun. Dave Hensman and council’s vote on Monday night make this particular matter ever more complex and confounding. At the Jan. 6 council meeting, Coun. Nelson Tilbury suggested Hensman – who was absent – may have had a conflict of interest because he leased a building last fall close to the former Buy Low building on Welton Street, which was purchased by the city in December as part of a downtown revitalization initiative. Hensman is adamant that no conflict exists. Nevertheless, a motion was put forward at Monday night’s council meeting to refer the issue to the B.C. Supreme Court – a reasonable, albeit potentially costly, course of action which would have cleared the air. The Community Charter, which has

authority over all municipal governments in B.C., required all councillors to vote on such a motion, including the councillor who is the subject of it. Further, a two-thirds majority of council (five of seven) was needed for it to pass. One councillor was ill and had to participate by phone. That alone would have been justification to defer the vote to a future meeting when all were present, and a clear legal explanation of the relevant charter sections could have been presented for everyone’s benefit. Regardless, the vote was taken, with Mayor Ted Adlem, Coun. Larry Nundal and Hensman against. The motion failed. The optics of all this are troublesome. The issue of a potential conflict of interest remains unresolved in the minds of many. The fact that a council member had to vote on a matter involving his own situation is unfathomable. That provincial legislation needs to be changed forthwith. To date in this entire process, the public interest has not been well served.

SOLITAIRE Court ruling would have resolved issue DIAMOND RING

Help Mission’s youth I was one of approximately 18 people who attended the Jan. 14 meeting about the issue of homeless youth in Mission. I learned that there are between 12 to 25 homeless under 19 in Mission. I learned Mission does not have any short-term shelter options to help stabilize these young people. I learned that homeless youth say they need five things: a place to get cleaned up, laundry facilities, healthy, warm meals, non-judgemental adults to talk to, and a safe, warm, dry place to sleep. These needs are not currently being met in Mission for homeless youth. What can we do about this? Get informed, get involved and take action, serve on a planning committee, help fundraise, assist with facility renovations, gather and donate food, toiletries, clothes. action. The burning question on the public’s mind is, “was a conflict of interest created or not?” We worry that no member of council present clarified the Community Charter section permitting Coun. Hensman to vote on a motion involving himself, in a matter being alleged to be part of a conflict of interest. Whereas Section 111 (3) of the Charter seem to permit doing so, the public may find it incongruous. Some members rightly seemed to feel a judicial, professional, impartial and legal review of the issue, to

ascertain facts involved and thus a fair decision would be rendered if conflict was committed or not. How can an elected council act so divided, on such an important matter? You had to watch the webcast and view the antics to appreciate just how unprofessional council is now perceived. The mere fact an ill councillor would, on several occasions, on a very poor phone line, be permitted to interrupt council proceedings to speak largely unintelligibly, was deplorable at best. It would have been

prudent and wise to have deferred the meeting, and obtain facts as to the Community Charter. But moreso, the fair and reasonable thing to do is as stated by several – let the court decide. A $50,000-$60,000 cost was floated – anything to fear-monger – but as Coun. Stevens alluded, in these matters money is not the primary issue. A sound case before a judge would have resolved the issue, with no hurt feelings nor further perpetuated lack of trust in council and their motives. George F. Evens Mission

Winter Weather Garbage Collection Woes Manoeuvring garbage trucks down narrow streets and steep slopes on icy roads can be a daunting task, not only putting garbage collectors, but other road users, at risk. Even if roads appear clear, snow banks may prevent collection vehicles from

pulling off to the side, creating hazards for motorists and pedestrians. Cancelled garbage collection service undoubtedly presents an inconvenience to residents, but it can become necessary to ensure everyone’s safety. If your garbage was left

at the curbside due to road conditions, please check www.mission. ca or call the collection contractor at 604-8206487 for updated collection information. Should collection be postponed until the following week, please bring your garbage, compost and

recyclables back inside. Instead of the usual two, you will be allowed to set out two garbage bins and two garbage bags (max. 80-L capacity and 20 kg weight each) on your regular collection day the following week. If your garbage, recyclables or compost

Motor City looking to a brighter future Keith Morgan

DETROIT – As goes the North American International Auto Show, so goes the industry to which it provides high profile. Every year at this time, journalists from around the world descend by the thousands on this former industrial powerhouse, now economically depressed Michigan city. The Driveway

team has just returned and we all agreed there was an air of optimism on the show floor that we haven’t witnessed for some years. Representatives of the Big Four domestic manufacturers believe they have turned the corner and the fellow scribes appear to agree that the North American brands have been revitalized. Today in print and online, we each pick five vehicles that

caught our eye. Yours truly has been a fan of Honda’s premium Acura brand. All solid performers but in recent years the design team has let the range down with uninspiring looks. The 2015 Acura TLX Prototype unveiling suggests the team is out of its uninspiring funk. This performance-luxury sedan, which will launch this summer, looks fresh and sporty. It will replace the

TL and the TSX and will be the design leader as new models are revealed during the next few years. TLX customers will be able to choose from two-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations; two high-performance, highly fuel-efficient new engines – 2.4-litre inline four and a 3.5-litre V6; two new advanced transmissions; and the next generation Acura Super-Handling

Toyota FT-1 coupe concept car All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) and Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS) dynamic performance and handling technologies. Audi showed off its compact

crossover concept, unimaginatively dubbed the All Road Shooting Brake concept. It’s based on the forthcoming TT, this concept uses the S3’s 2.0TFSi engine of 292hp. It also gets a hybrid motor between the engine and the S-Tronic transmission. The market for the wagons is not big on this side of the pond but this could be a game changer. It combines the elegant lines of a wagon with the wide and higher stance of an offroad capable vehicle. “The show car combines sex appeal, highly efficient e-tron-quattro technology that produces 300 kW of power yet only consumes 1.9 l/100 km of fuel and cutting-edge electronic applications,” says Audi board member Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg. The 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe is based on its sedan sibling and should be available by mid-summer, starting at the mid $30,000s. The base power plant is a 2.0-litre, turbocharged inline four-cylinder, generating 272 horses, and a 3.6-litre V6, 321 hp is also available. Interesting little feature: because coupes typically

have large, long doors, the reach behind the shoulder to grab the seatbelt can be a stretch. The ATS Coupe has motorized carriers to “hand” the seatbelt to the driver and front passenger upon entry. The Toyota FT-1 coupe concept caused a stir among those hungering for a return to the days of the Toyota Celica/Supra. Company officials were coy about whether it will go into production but judging by the media attention it will. The Volkswagen Beetle Dune has a rugged off-road look, largely due to the raising of the body by 50 mm and the addition of 19-inch wheels with large tyres. Just like the old days, the new Beetle features a rear-mounted ski-rack. The concept is actually a return to an idea from January 2000, when VW showed the New Beetle Dune concept in Los Angeles. That was a flight fancy, this concept is built on the current production model and the German manufacturer is looking for the nod to proceed from Beetle buyers. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Chrysler 200 Some might remember the Chrysler Sebring sedan. That nameplate was retired and rebadged as the Chrysler 200. This all-new Chrysler 200 is light years away from that old platform. In fact, it uses the same Alfa Romeo platform found under the Dodge Dart and impressive Jeep Cherokee. The strong points of this platform are excellent on-road manners with a quiet interior and superb handling. There will be a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine with 184hp or the optional 290hp 3.6L engine found in many other Chrysler products. The Chrysler 200 will have front wheel drive or optional all wheel drive, derived from the same system used in the Jeep Cherokee. This will provide Chrysler with a unique offering as most other manufacturers stick with two-wheel drive. The interior features the Uconnect computer interface system and is covered in soft-touch materials and supportive seats. Look for the all-new Chrysler 200 to arrive in late spring and start at $22,495.

Flocks of international journalists roamed the floors of COBO Hall in downtown Detroit on the occasion of the 25th annual North

American International Auto Show (NAIAS). With a plethora of automotive goodness under one roof, it’s hard to narrow down which ones to focus on. After all, there are con-

cepts, production vehicles and much more. And there are a lot of them. To kick things off on my list, let’s start with some concepts. Ah, MINIs. For over a de-

cade, they have been romping the streets and causing people to smile, whether driving them, sitting in them or watching them. At the NAIAS, the masses were introduced to the MINI

John Cooper Works Concept. Not a whole heck of a lot of information was released but you can bet your bottom dollar that it’ll be fast. There are large air inlets, 18-inch wheels and the unmistakable MINI silhouette and face. It’s built as much for the road as it is the track. Kia certainly drew the crowds when it came to their GT4 Stinger Concept. According to Kia, the “GT4 Stinger was conceived by the ‘gearheads’ in Kia’s Irvine, Calif., design studio.” The rear-wheel drive, 2+2 sports car, had a powerful stage presence. And also packs a healthy dose of 315 horsepower from a turbocharged, 4-cylinder powerplant. Next we have the Honda Fit. It’s a spectacular little car and it’s all new for 2015. Up front, the Fit sports a new grille and headlight design. Around back, there are rear reflectors and LED taillights run along the hatch with a chrome tailgate garnish and rear diffuser. Furthermore, Honda keeps their exclusive Magic Seat, which offers multiple configurable seating positions. Translation, the Fit provides an unrivaled 52.7 cubic feet of cargo space when the second row seats are folded flat. The VW Golf R is no stranger to Canadians. It has been sold here in the Great White North for the last couple of years. But they’re kind of like the tooth fairy. You hear about them, but you rarely see them. Why? Because there were only a few hundred allocated for Canada. But I’m hoping such is not the case with the upcoming 2015 Golf R. Making its debut at the show, you can liken it to a doughnut. A doughnut that is fat-free, calorie-free and has sprinkles on top. Yes, it’s just that delicious. The all-wheel drive 5-door has plenty of appeal. But with the option of outfitting it with a 6-speed DSG with paddle shifters (it was previously only available with a 6-speed manual,) it might just reach out to a few more takers. Speaking of cars with four cylinders and all-wheel drive, the Golf R has some competition lined up in the form of the Subaru WRX STI. With a 305 horsepower horizontally-opposed turbocharged boxer engine, multi-differential controllable all-wheel-drive system, and a six-speed gearbox, those looking to take shortcuts off the beaten path can do it. And do it in style. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

drivewayBC.ca Ford Edge 2011 to 2013: Superior road manners The Edge was the first midsized cross-utility vehicle from Ford when it was launched in 2007. It has been a resounding sales success, especially in Canada, where it’s also built. Compared with a more traditional utility vehicle, such as the then truck-based Ford Explorer, the Edge is a lighter car-based vehicle that offers better fuel economy, sexier styling and superior road manners, yet the Edge is packed with practical utility features. To start with, there should be a larger selection of used product available out there and this allows you to be a pickier buyer. Parts and servicing are also less of an issue and generally less expensive. The first big styling revamp of Edge came with the 2011 model year. While mainly a front/rear exterior restyling job more than 60 per cent of its components were redesigned and the interior was completely re-worked. It also earned Ford Edge the overall Best New Utility Vehicle Award from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). The interior make-over included the introduction of MyFord Touch, an advanced connectivity system that has its critics in the media and consumer groups. Ford has

tried to address these user issues with system updates. The main touch-screen is divided into four colour-coded sections (Phone, Audio, Climate and Navigation) and it can be operated with voice commands. A major under-hood change followed in 2012 with the introduction of Ecoboost, an engine series that has revitalized the entire Ford product line. The turbocharged 2.0 litre (240 horsepower) four-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection in the Edge provides excellent power and great fuel economy. The claimed city/highway fuel economy is 9.9/6.6 L/100 km. Edge comes in three frontdrive trim levels SE, SEL and Limited editions. It’s also offered with a 3.5-litre V6 engine that can produce 285 horsepower. City/highway fuel economy is 11.9/8.0 L/100 km. This engine is also mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and there’s an optional all-wheel drive system. The top “Sport” edition of Edge comes with a 3.7 litre V6 that can produce 305-horsepower and comes with huge 22-inch polished-aluminum wheels. The Ecoboost editions are strictly front-drive and come with an aero body kit package with an active front grille, which has concealed shutters that controls air flow through the radiator and the engine bay. The aero body kit

Five cars to drive while you still have a pulse With baby boomers seemingly more aware of their own mortality these days, bucket lists of things to do before one’s demise have become increasingly popular.

Here are five of the cars everybody should drive before kicking the bucket, taking the big dirt nap, biting the dust or, well, you get the idea:

5. 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Hemi Superbird: The Superbird appeals to anyone with a “stick it to the man” sensibility. Its whole reason for being was to introduce the streamlined nose cone and giant wing into Chrysler’s NASCAR efforts back when NASCAR still had homologation requirements for race cars. Although available with Mopar’s excellent 440-cubic-inch V-8, it’s the 426 Hemi that belongs on anyone’s automotive bucket list. Between the view over the long hood and nose cone and the view out the back with the five-storeytall wing, the Superbird driving experience is like nothing else.

DrivesU-Crazy

When you head out today count how many times, a car zips up right behind you then cuts into the curb lane to pass. What makes it so fascinating for me is that invariably the lane to the left is free yet they can’t resist the urge to curb. While most of us are happy to pass sensibly on the left and leave that lane for slow-pokes, old folks and parked cars, they insist on turning it into their own private race track.

Canadian Tire has created the world’s first drivable ice truck. Aside from a working chassis, tires and vital mechanical components, this 15,000-pound truck was completely made of ice. The unusual creation was prompted by the retailer’s desire to test out the MotoMaster Eliminator Ultra battery, which is designed to work in the frigid temperatures many Canadian drivers experience. As part of the Tested for Life project the battery was chilled to -40°C, to drive the ice truck and prove its strength. The ice truck and battery is featured in a Canadian Tire television advertisement, which premiered on January 1 during the 2014 Winter Classic. A full “behind-thescenes” documentary on the ice truck challenge can be viewed online. Go to YouTube.com and search Canadian Tire Ice Truck.

Sharing Games stresses to successes Pam Alexis and Brian Antonson were already known for their community spirit when they got the call. “Can we talk? You know we have the 2014 BC Winter Games coming here ...” asked Mission Mayor Ted Adlem of each of them a couple of years ago. When Adlem suggested Antonson be president of the Mission Games board of directors, it was far more than the retired broadcaster and educator was expecting. “I thought maybe he wanted me to do publicity or something, but no, the mayor’s request made me do a double take. I may have taken my kids to soccer and the like but I was never really involved in a sports fraternity, and the mayor said that’s not what they needed,” Antonson said. Adlem told him the Games operation required leadership and organizational skills. And when Antonson garnered feedback from the Vernon Games president, his positive response and pride in the great team he had sealed the deal. Alexis, a community builder, event planner and former politician, had a similar experience

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Pam Alexis and Brian Antonson are working hard to ensure the upcoming BC Winter Games that are coming to Mission will be a success. as vice-president of the Mission Games. “At first I asked if Brian was well ... and looking back this has been a huge undertaking,” she laughed. “I can honestly say for me this is probably the largest event I have ever had to oversee, and the most complicated, the most stressful of anything I have ever done,” said Alexis. “The nice thing is that Brian and I complement our skill sets and get along well.” When asked to tell their best Games stress to success story, both said developing infrastructure to house the thousands of people required for the opening

and closing ceremonies was a key challenge. “We know the people of Mission are hardy and can stand for hours in cold weather for the annual Candlelight Parade, but athletes attending these Games have to stay warm because they compete the next day,” said Antonson. The solution? The BC Games Event Centre at Mission Raceway, a 12,000 sq.-ft. “tent” venue was born. It will stand for about 10 days. “We really have to thank the District of Mission for stepping up to the plate and making sure that infrastructure was in place. The Games

people told us to expect an opening crowd of 5,000 to 7,000 people,” said Alexis. Already an army of volunteers, a predicted 2,000 by Feb. 20 when the four-day Games begin, is set for training. These Games will have an estimated financial impact of $1.8 million, like the event hosted in Kimberly-Cranbrook, said Antonson. Because these 18-sport Mission Games have the widest footprint, from the Callaghan Valley at Whistler to Hemlock Valley Ski Resort to Abbotsford and Langley, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, (check www.bcgames.org to see what sports are hosted

where), the logistics of recruiting volunteers and providing transportation was daunting. Antonson and Alexis encourage everyone to watch the Games, buy Games merchandise (online or at various Mission locations), and volunteer. “That experience and knowledge of volunteerism creates great spirit and a valuable community resource,” said Antonson. “The Games will be a really great experience. There’s always negatives and positives. If you go into it thinking it is going to be all roses, you aren’t being realistic. We are working with great people for a great reason and the community is going to benefit hugely.” Alexis said the Games experience has precipitated an interest in creating an exhibition park in Mission to house major events. Antonson, who will resume work on a book and a project to build an observatory at Fraser River Heritage Park after the Games, is looking forward to some sleep. “I’m flattered I was asked to participate,” he said. “Now it’s up to the community to share in that joy. Let the Games begin.”

DEVELOPMENT OF A PEST MANAGEMENT PLAN 9850-25-2014

The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) is renewing its approval under the Integrated Pest Management Act for activities, including the use of pesticides, involved in its Nuisance Mosquito Control Program. These activities are conducted under the guidance of a Pest Management Plan (PMP), which is being developed by the FVRD for the 20142019 mosquito seasons. The majority of nuisance mosquitoes in the FVRD breed along the banks of the Fraser River and its tributaries where seasonal flooding and seepage results in substantial mosquito breeding habitat particularly in years of high river levels. Standing waters within the FVRD that are prone to seasonal flooding will be treated between May – July using bacterial larvicides with the active ingredients Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) or Bacillus sphaericus (Bsph). Both Bti (trade names Aquabac 200G, Vectobac 200G, or Vectobac 1200L) and Bsph (trade name Vectolex CG) are registered for use in Canada, are target specific to nuisance mosquito larvae, are non-toxic, and are environmentally safe. These proposed pesticides will be applied by either hand or by helicopter to mosquito larvae development sites on nonprivate lands or on owner-approved private lands throughout the FVRD. A person wishing to contribute information about a proposed treatment site, relevant to the development of the PMP, may send copies of the information to the applicant at the address below within 30 days of the publication of this notice. Also, within 30 days, a person wishing to review the application or provide comments, may do so by contacting the person below.
