Joke of the Week:

Be sure to send in your event information.

A little girl who was writing a school paper asked her father, “Dad, what is the difference between anger and exasperation?” “It’s mostly a matter of degree.” the dad replied. “ Let me show you what I mean.” With that the dad picked up the phone and dialed a number at random. A man answered the phone and the dad says, “Hello, is Homer there?” The man on the other end answered, “I’m sorry, you must have the wrong number. There’s nobody here by that name.” The father hangs up and immediately hits redial, “Hello, is Homer there?” asks the father. “Now listen up buddy, there’s nobody here by that name so quit bothering me!” The dad listens as the man slams the phone down. You see, says the dad, he is starting to get angry. He hits redial and a loud voice comes on the line. “HELLO!” the man yells. “Yes, is Homer there? asks the father calmly. “Are you crazy?” the man screams, “ I told you Homer doesn’t live here so don’t call back again!” then he slams the phone down again. “Did you hear that?” the father asked the little girl, “Now that is what anger sounds like.” “Now you’re going to hear exasperation.” He picked the phone up and hit redial again. “HELLO!” boomed the voice on the other end. “Hello” the dad says politely, “This is Homer, have I had any calls?”

Grinch outwitted after all

During Greenwoods’ first meeting of 2014, Councillor Colleen Lang reported that apparently a Grinch tried to steal the Greenwood Community Christmas Dinner over the holidays. She reported that an unknown individual phoned the radio station a few days before Christmas and told them to put out a public notice that the dinner was cancelled. Lang said she was asked by city administrator Robin Dalziel to liaise on the file after Les Williams confirmed he would not be organizing it. She then began to put things in motion for the dinner to go ahead with different organizers. She reported that Williams phoned her on Dec. 20 to book the hall for Christmas Day but he was told it was already booked. On Dec. 23 Mountain FM broadcast that the Greenwood community dinner was cancelled and directing people to the Grand Forks dinner. Lang followed up on that with a quick call to the radio station and in the end there was a large turnout of 77 people. *** City staff came back to council with an estimate of $100,000 to renovate the A-frame for use as public washrooms. Councillor Barry Noll, himself a contractor, suggested that cost could be whittled down. Dalziel told that he had contacted the Citizens on Patrol (COP) who are cur-

rently using the building and was told the group is still active in Greenwood. Dalziel said he’d asked COP to provide the city with a letter to that effect. He cautioned council that COP was still using the space and if the city wanted to put washrooms in the building then an alternate location would be needed for COP. *** By a split vote (three for and two opposed), Greenwood council voted to support the re-engagement of discussions between the Government of British Columbia and the Government of Canada, towards the establishment of a new national park in the South Okanagan Similkameen; and, “asks to be consulted throughout the process to ensure that we are partnering in economic development, tourism, and business development strategies and programs.” Councillors Lee Cudworth and Darla Ashton were both opposed. Cudworth said he was opposed outright against the park and Ashton noted that both Osoyoos and Keremeos have asked that the feasibility study be made public. *** Dalziel presented council with an update on the revitalization bylaw that would see property tax increases resulting from improvements deferred for the first number of years following the renovation/upgrade to the property.

Notice of Intention to Establish and Adopt a Bylaw and Repeal Existing Bylaws

Pursuant to Section 124(3) of the Community Charter, the Council of the Village of Midway is hereby giving notice of their intention to establish and adopt Bylaw No. 450, cited as a bylaw to “Regulate Meetings of Council and Committees”. Also, pursuant to Section 124(3), the Council is further giving notice of their intention to repeal existing Bylaw No. 402, “Regulate Meetings of Council and Committees”, and amending bylaws to Bylaw 402, cited as amending Bylaws 417 and 424.

Why contribute to a spousal RRSP? If you have a spouse (married or common-law) you can contribute to a spousal RRSP. Use of a spousal RRSP is a method of income sharing at retirement. The idea is to build two pools of savings, one for each spouse that will produce similar income streams at retirement. The taxes paid on the two incomes will likely be less than those paid if the income were to be taxed in the hands of one spouse in a higher tax bracket. The more income that can be generated by the spouse in the lower tax bracket, the better the tax savings. Incomesharing is particularly beneficial when one spouse will have substantial income from pensions and other sources, and the other spouse will have little or none. If you and your spouse have significantly different incomes and/or pension plans, you may want to contribute to a spousal plan. You will still receive the RRSP tax deduction for your contribution. Your total RRSP contributions (personal and spousal) are subject to your yearly RRSP limit, the same limit that applies to your RRSP. Since a spousal RRSP belongs to your spouse, the money you invested in it also belongs to your spouse and you have no legal say about it. Although your spousal plus personal contributions cannot exceed your annual RRSP limit, the amount you

contribute into a spousal plan does not affect how much your spouse can contribute to an RRSP. He/she can still contribute up to their yearly limit as well.

He promised the project would be completed by the next council meeting on Jan. 27 and staff will be able to present a draft bylaw, with input from council for the meetings in February. *** Council continues to investigate providing WIFI service in the downtown core. In October Wendy McCullough offered a WIFI service on behalf of the Rotary Club. She asked that council let her know in time so the budgeted money could be spent by the end of March. Staff have been gathering information and a new option has come forward. Shaw has recently signed a 10-year contract with Summerland that has several transmitters within the city providing service under a program called Shaw Go. A motion was passed to have city staff research the options for the provision of WIFI service within the City of Greenwood including greater detail on costs and services, and to provide a recommendation as to the best course of action for council. *** The city will again enter the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting competition. They have entered four times, winning gold once and bronze twice. *** During question period at the end of the meeting, Bob Smith asked if the city had any news on the demolition of the house on North Kimberley that has not been lived in since it caught fire in April 2003. Administrator Robin Dalziel replied that letters had been exchanged with the property owner and admitted it was his turn to respond. He confirmed the city has not engaged a lawyer at this time. “It is still standing there,” complained Smith. “It’s a hell of a mess—it’s not the only one in Greenwood but it’s the oldest one.”

LIFE’S BRIGHTER under the sun.

Is it risky to invest in a spousal RRSP? What if we divorce, or if my spouse dies? In most situations, if you divorce, RRSPs and pensions will be split. If one spouse dies, RRSPs can be transferred tax-free to the remaining spouse provided that the spouse was named beneficiary of the RRSP plan. Depending on your situation, a spousal RRSP can be an effective way to reduce the amount of tax you pay in retirement. Speak to your advisor to help you decide if a spousal RRSP is right for your family.

All registered holders of a woodlot licence are members of the Woodlot Product Development Council. According to Dore, one of the highlights was a presentation by Mike Lynn (Celgar) on the new chipping facility in Midway, along with discussion on certification and log pricing from local log buyers. Two reps from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource operations gave updates along with discussion on First Nation issues. A summer field trip and meeting is planned for early July on Tyler Hodgkinson’s and Lorraine Barg’s woodlots with lunch to be provided. The 2015 AGM (held every January) is the next election year for the group—in the meantime Dore remains as president. The FBCWA has an up-to-date and informative website at woodlot.bc.ca The BWA continues to provide training and skill upgrading for its members such as inventory and calculation modeling, and waste and residue courses. Once again the costs are covered by membership in the WPDC.

Strong allegations from Fifth Estate CBC’s Fifth Estate aired an important documentary on Sunday night. It was called The Silence of the Labs and it alleges that Harper’s Conservative government has been systematically dismantling publicly financed science in this country. “This is the story of the bitter conflict between ideology and knowledge,” said the announcer during the intro. “What can happen when factual discoveries raise inconvenient questions for politicians.” The Conservatives have an agenda—removing any message that doesn’t back up their own policial and economic view of the world. It is important to Harper and the people who fund his political machine that northern energy development be allowed to proceed as quickly as possible. They believe it is the engine that will drive our economy and secure our future. Unfortunately this path is going to leave the country far worse off in the decades to come. The problem with Harper’s way of looking at the world is that he’s not really looking. If he is presented with science that tells him he doesn’t want to hear then he takes quick action—to kill the messenger. This doesn’t happen in a vacuum—other scientists around the world see this happening and they know that Canada is not a place where research and the search for truth is encouraged. Public funding of science and enforcement of environmental oversight have both suffered badly under this government. Oh there will still be jobs for scientists—in the private sector—where their work will be carefully vetted before being made public. There is some hope though. Thanks to the Internet, the message is still getting out. You can go online and watch that Fifth Estate show and make up your own mind.

Editor, The Times: Regarding the Ponderosa Arts and Music Festival I would like to state that 4H is a wonderful organization that benefits families and community. I applaud leaders and all volunteers not only in 4H, but in all the organizations, clubs and programs in our valley. Without these visionaries and hard workers we would have nothing here, not only for our youth but other ages from 0-90+. I question Mr. Hargraves in his inference of the 4H involvement with the Ponderosa Arts and Music Festival. I also quote from Mr. Hargraves’ letter that 4H “teaches our young men and women responsibility, honour, integrity and hard work.” I question the responsibility shown

by the organizers of the Ponderosa festival—where did consideration and respect enter the picture? I am not criticising the choice of music, but rather the loudness of such, to the point it reverberated off our walls; we could not hear the TV at normal volume, let alone try to sleep. The bass thumped and blared forth until 2 a.m. each morning. Surely this loudness is excessive and not necessary to appreciate the talents of the variety of performers. You spoke of volunteers. We have lived in this valley since 1949, raised a family here and have (do) spend many enjoyable hours helping out with the hopes of benefiting, encouraging and promoting our area and community. These young entrepreneurs did come by and told us of the wonderful festival. Good for them to take the initiative to create something for the youth (young or old). BUT they neglected to mention

that the volume would be so loud, nor that it would prohibit sleep until the wee hours of the mornings. Usually we do not hear the functions from the fairgrounds: ball, rodeo, dances, family reunions, etc. The loudness of the Ponderosa Arts and Music Festival was harsh and as far as I am concerned, needless. What of that poor unfortunate family living directly across from the fairgrounds…with a sleepdeprived infant. By the way, Ralph, to my knowledge NO ONE mentioned cancelling the festival. We can all be part of the solution by lowering the volume, and starting the programs/ performers earlier in the day to accommodate the many acts. So let’s not just dream, but make it a reality. Ann Rexin, Rock Creek

Jan. 28 date of annual general meeting It’s a new year and, it seems, judging by the ads in the newspaper, a good time for annual general meetings! The Greenwood Public Library is holding its AGM on the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 28 at the library. Refreshments will available from 6:30 p.m. on, and the meeting will commence at 7 p.m. We will hear reports from the librarian and board chair, financial reports, and will be electing new and returning trustees to the board. Under the Library Act, we need a volunteer board consisting of from five to nine members, and currently have enough returning members and nominees to fill eight positions. If you are interested and would like more information, contact the library during regular open hours Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. We encourage as many members of the library as possible to come to our annual

REPORT

general meeting. This is mentioned every year, but bears repeating: some of our funding comes from sources who like to see a good representative turnout at our AGM, as it reflects the interest and commitment of our members to the organization. The meeting will be short; it usually ends before 8 p.m. Beginning this month, patrons of the library will be able to browse the entire SITKA catalogue for the Kootenay Library Federation (16 libraries) and place holds on books, DVDs, or videos (that are greater than one year old), which will then be shipped to Greenwood for

pickup. This new program, called Interlibrary Connect, is similar to the regular Interlibrary loan program, but is simpler for staff and patrons. (The regular Interlibrary loan program will still be available for items not found in the Kootenay libraries.) We will be receiving and passing along information on how you as a patron can use Interlibrary Connect. With the closure of Merlin’s Music video and DVD rental business, we have noticed an increase in the use of our video/DVD collection. However, we have only a limited number of movies available on DVD, and a limited budget to purchase new ones, so we are appealing to the public: if you have any fairly recent (no more than six to eight years old) DVDs that you would be willing to donate to the library for others to enjoy, we would certainly appreciate having them!

Martial arts benefits all ages VLODKO BARCHUK Submitted

The Boundary Martial Arts Club was started in the fall of 2007, by Tae Kwon Do Third Degree Black Belt Master Bo Macfarlane. The club is a satellite club of Grand Master Lee’s School of Tae Kwon Do, located in Abbotsford, B.C. Master MacFarlane is assisted by Vlodko Barchuk, Tae Kwan Do First Degree Black. We hold evening sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the West Boundary Elementary School. Tae Kwon Do has benefits for all ages. We accept students from five years of age and up. Incidentally, Vlodko Barchuk is our current eldest member at 68 years of age. There is no fee for attending and dis-

creet financial aid is available for acquiring the Gee or uniform. Bo Macfarlane was the former viceprincipal at the Midway high school and then the principal at West Boundary Elementary School. He is currently the principal at Osoyoos Elementary School. Vlodko Barchuk is a semi-retired social worker with many years of experience in working with children and families. The commitment of the school is to provide a safe structured environment for children and adults to learn, not only the self defence benefits of Tae kwon Do, but to more importantly learn self awareness, self respect and respect and kindness towards others. Bo Macfarlane and Vlodko Barchuk are able to use their professional experience and knowledge to teach and encourage these values.

The club is open to all, whether they want to progress in formal Tae Kwan Do as well as to those seeking to maintain or improve general health or fitness. In addition to regular Tae Kwon Do classes, this fall the club launched a free Saturday morning session of self-defence for mothers and their daughters. This session was co-presented with Constable Rene Thompson, Grand Forks RCMP Detachment. This program has an educational component that addresses “potential danger awareness and avoidance” as well as basic self-defence. Boundary Martial Arts Club has been invited to present this program on an annual basis at the high school.

Seminar about healthful living SID KETTNER, MD Submitted

Heart disease is the number one killer of Canadians, including the West Boundary region, striking down more than 50 per cent of our adult population. About one-half of those with a heart attack never even make it to hospital. It strikes that quickly and ruthlessly. Sadly though, 75 per cent knew that they were in serious trouble 10 years prior, but they did nothing about it. They knew their risk factors but failed to take action. There are 10 major risk factors. We can control seven of these—diet, smoking, hypertension, lack of exercise, weight, diabetes and stress. We cannot change our heredity, gender or age.

What is the good news? Eighty to eighty-five per cent of heart disease is preventable if we just would stop smoking, lower our cholesterol and start exercising. These measures are simple but highly effective and at no cost to us or to the medical system. In fact, we will save money as we save our lives! Next time we will discuss the warning signs of a heart attack and show how the rates of this disease have drastically dropped as people took charge of their own health. Exciting! But for now, if you are at risk, consider attending the highly successful Healthful Living Seminar to be held at the Seniors’ Centre in Midway (541 – 7th Avenue, Midway) starting on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m.

We at the Times saw all the changes announced at Canada Post last week as an opportunity to make a few alterations to the way we handle email. From now on if you need to talk with Pat Kelly at the news desk send your emails to reporter@boundarycreektimes.com . For everything else to do with the Boundary Creek Times (advertising, subscriptions, classifieds, etc.) Dyan Stoochnoff ’s new email address is sales@boundarycreektimes.com . For the next couple of months any email sent to our old addresses will be forwarded, but sooner or later the new addresses above will be the only live email for us.

Students prepare for graduation

Thursday, January 16, 2014 Boundary Creek Times A11

In conversation with members of the Class of 2014

Introducing

Sarah Filgate When asked to describe the path she is planning to take after graduating from BCSS in June Grade 12 student Sarah Filgate admits that she’s actually travelling on two paths at once. “I am getting into film, while my other path is trying to be logical and get a real job,” she told Career counselor Pam Storie during her grad transitions exit interview. “So I am going to go into event management and promotions; and while I am doing that I will do some acting.” She’s unsure which school she will attend right now, but she plans to make application to a couple of institutions and then sit back and see which school offers her an entrance scholarship. Sarah has already been picking up work as a movie extra and, since September of last year, she has a contract with an agent that gives her access to scripts and auditions. Sarah has definitely been bitten by the acting bug. She’s played in four major productions while at BCSS; most recently playing Anita in West Side Story. In fact she recently auditioned for the new Star Wars movie. That job would take her over to England. She’s also auditioned for a movie called Truck Stop, which will be filmed in Toronto.

Introducing

Brandon Millett He built his first fuel cell by the time he was out of high school—how cool is that! Class of 2014 grad Brandon Millett has a hydrogen fuel cell project that he plans to enter in the science fair this spring. He says his favourite classes are the sciences and, of all of the sciences, physics tops the lot. “I enjoy designing and building things,” said Brandon. He’s already applied at UBC. “Because you can get all your schooling right there— bachelors and masters degree.” His plans for now look toward a career in mechanical engineering. Brandon came to BCSS from Nova Scotia when he was 12 years old. Prior to moving from Nova Scotia he collected certificates for completing various levels of sailing courses and he took piano lessons from age five to twelve and completed the Royal Conservatory Level 4. Two years after moving to the Boundary he began to teach himself blues and rock and roll piano both for fun and so he could jam with friends. His strong work ethic is demonstrated in his daily practice schedule. Brandon formed a band with three friends at the beginning of 2013. In the summer of 2013 they played a set at the Sky High Blues Festival in Rock Creek.

She was one of a group of high school students who attended the Truth and Reconciliation through Education session in Vancouver last fall. “My wanting to learn more about residential schools started in Grade 11. We learned a little bit more in depth. I found out how little this is talked about.” Sarah was raised in Carmi. Of the hour and forty minute bus ride she says, “You get used to it. You get to know people really well.” She works at Big White. “I love working there. It was my first job and I am really lucky to work there because you don’t realize how much you love something until it is gone. Last summer I was working at the Recreation Inn in Kelowna—I love Big White. There are great clients—everybody is happy, they are on vacation and they love it.” When asked about favorite classes she replied, “Anything with Mrs. Lautard pretty much, because you learn more than the curriculum. I like English and anything in the arts.” She’s been active in Spirit Club for four years, used to play on the volleyball team—but drama kind of took over. Storie congratulated her on being a well-rounded student. “Academics—an opportunity to go to university, acting, sports, volunteer work, compassion and empathy.” Sarah will be leaving BCSS in January – she’s completing her grad requirements a semester early, but she will be back for the grad ceremony. She plans on working at Big White this season to build up some savings to go to the coast with. For the past two seasons he was working at Mt. Baldy as a lift operator or on the volunteer ski patrol. He took advantage of the Fire Suppression course because it offered him certificates that he didn’t have to pay for. He’s also completed the Heavy Equipment Course. Through his jobs at the ski hill and last summer at Kettle River Provincial Park he’s been able to buy his own car and motorcycle. “It wasn’t easy making enough money to afford two vehicles insurance, the money to buy them, and the money to fuel them,” he says. His abilities as an artist have been recognized with school awards when in Grade 10. He and his family live on Hume Creek Road—in an underground house that they built themselves. Since that time he has helped in the construction of three more for neighbors. Energy efficiency at its best—the 2,700 square foot house stays cool in the summer and only needs a fire to be lit only a few times each winter. As part of his exit interview he was asked to pick an inspirational quote. His choice was by Winston Churchill, “If you are going through hell, keep going.”

Workshop explores partnership building

Boundary region community organizations will be gathering on Thursday, Feb. 20 for a day of partnership building and action planning sponsored by Community Futures Boundary and SPARC BC (the Social Planning and Research Council of BC). The day long event, entitled Strengthening Partnerships for Community Develop-

ment: A Day of Skill Building, Discussion and Action Planning is aimed at supporting the development of effective partnerships and collaboration both regionally and within individual communities. “Working together to develop solutions to community problems can produce great opportunities as well as significant challenges,” said Sandy Elzinga, spokesperson

Lions club delivers 130 hampers

This was the 29th year the Kettle River Lions Club delivered a Christmas hamper to some of the needy residents. It started off with 25 food baskets at the beginning and now in Christmas 2013, it has expanded to 130. It is economic hardship that causes many people to look forward to a hamper. At the same time it is the good news that some families say, “We don’t need it this year because we found a job.” The real jump in need was found when Pope & Talbot closed its doors. Many of the workers at the plant and even more in the bush and local suppliers felt the need. Recently, we found that seniors with only the basic government pension have moved into the area. When some sort of emergency arises, they find that the money isn’t there. The Lions club had considered to not deliver to Greenwood, because they don’t have any members in the city. But thanks to the Board of Trade and the Rev. Straume, the hampers were delivered. Greenwood makes up over 50 per cent the people on the list. Other areas, like Bridesville, Rock Creek, Westbridge and Midway make up the remaining half. Many members of the community who are not in need, contribute to the program and the Kettle River Lions Club is thankful for the help. The parcels with canned goods and other staple foods are getting pretty heavy and as the Lions are getting older, it is the time that they are looking for younger members to carry on the tradition of fundraising and community work. Information about membership may be received from any member or look up the regular advertisement in the Boundary Creek Times.

Family Literacy Day Jan. 27 ABC LIFE LITERACY CANADA Submitted

Every year on January 27, Family Literacy Day encourages families to participate in literacyrelated activities together. Started by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999, Family Literacy Day is celebrated each year with thousands of activities and events across the country in homes, schools, learning centres and literacy organizations. “When learning is valued and practiced every day at home, family time can be full of teachable moments that build the bonds between parents and children,” said Gillian Mason, President of ABC Life Literacy Canada. This year’s Family Literacy Day theme, 15 Minutes of Fun, promotes the importance of parents making time every day for learning with their children, enjoying reading and other

learning activities together. By spending at least 15 minutes a day, parents can make a huge difference to the development of their child’s literacy skills, and can help improve their own skills as well. “Parents are a child’s first and best teacher,” says. “When learning is valued and practiced every day at home, family time can be full of teachable moments that build the bonds between parents and children.” The Family Literacy Day website familyliteracyday.ca includes storytelling tips, games, events, articles, the HSBC Learning Activity Centre and lots of other family literacy resources. Every day should be a day for learning together as a family, because Family Literacy Day is not just for one day a year on January 27. To make a real difference to children’s learning, Family Literacy Day is every day.

with and beyond cancer is forecasted to grow as the population increases, and treatment and early detection continues to be more effective. The majority of those diagnosed with cancer are now living longer. That’s good news, and the BC Cancer Agency continues to improve those odds through research to advance detection, screening, treatment and prevention. But while some who have had cancer remain disease-free for the rest of their lives, others experience issues related to physical, emotional and financial wellbeing after their treatment. The goal of the BC Cancer Agency’s Provincial Survivorship Program is to improve the wellbeing of those who are living with and beyond cancer. These individuals have most often left the BC Cancer Agency system, and are under the care of their family physician in their home community. Forward will be published three times per year, with the generous support of the BC Cancer Foundation. “The BC Cancer Foundation is proud to fund Forward as a part of our commitment to enhancing cancer care across the province,” said Doug Nelson, president and CEO of the BC Cancer Foundation. Chronicles of Boundary Country from the pages of The Boundary Creek Times Volume IV, No.7 – April 23, 1898

cial Constable Elkins with having a deer in his possession for the purpose of sale or traffic. Constable Elkins’ evidence was to the effect that he had dinner at the defendant’s hotel and was served with venison; that he subsequently found four quarters of venison hanging up in an outhouse and which he confiscated. The defendant admitted the charge but claimed that as he was a free miner, he had a right to kill deer at any time. The court inflicted a fine, including costs, of $25.50.” ➤ The Big City Map – “Mr. C. AE. Shaw, civil engineer, has just completed the map of the city of Greenwood and turned it over to city council. The map shows every portion of the city and is the first complete one prepared. It is over ten feet in length and includes not only the original townsite but all the subdivisions and portions of mineral claims within the corporation limits. The map may be seen at the Courthouse.”

BLASTS FROM THE PAST

➤ The District’s First Medicare Insurance Program – “After May 1, treatment at the Greenwood hospital will be at the disposal of every one at a very moderate price. Dr. Jakes has decided to issue monthly and annual tickets of admission to the hospital... monthly tickets can be procured for $2 or an annual ticket for $20. As the hospital has already established a name for excellent treatment, every wise man will provide for careful nursing and medical attendance when ill by securing monthly or yearly tickets. “It is, of course, understood that no hospital tickets are sold to people already sick.” ➤ Game out of Season – “On April 14th, Charles Hozier, hotel keeper in Rock Creek, was charged by Provin-

➤ Assault and Battery – “Mrs. Haines of Greenwood was charged in the police court on Monday with having assaulted her Chinese cook. She acknowledged having hit the Chinaman with a poker, and Police Magistrate Hallett imposed a fine of $75.” ➤ No Ferry But a Basket Instead – “Now that the government has decided not to build the ferry across the West Fork of the Kettle River above Rock Creek, Mr. David Beath of Greenwood has decided to build a basket for the conveyance of prospectors and supplies across the river. As there are a large number of prospectors going into the district this year, the venture is likely to prove profitable.” ➤ Large Mining Plant for the Mother Lode – “An order has been placed for a 10-drill Ingersoll-Sergeant air compressor, two 60-horse-power boilers, large hoisting engine, sinking pump and complete mining outfit for the Mother Lode mine in Deadwood Camp. This is the largest plant yet installed in the Boundary district. It will be shipped two weeks from receipt of order, and be on the ground in 4 or 5 weeks.”

It’s a ‘bunch of bunk’ without love From the Back Pew ”Just saying”, by the sometimes irreverent Ed Brouwer. No claims of absolute originality are made for this material. As one man said, “I milk a lot of cows, but I churn my own butter.”

We at Sidley Mountain Church realize that fewer and fewer people are actually coming to church without a connection with that church, and that connection needs to be someone that they trust. Sitting behind someone for an hour or two during a meeting is not conducive to the building of relationships. So how do we change that? The definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again in the same manner expecting a different result. We must be willing to embrace the need for change, Godly change! First understand, Christ did not die so we could attend meetings, so let’s lift the guilt trip for not attending church meetings. However, Christ did give His life so we could have a real and lasting relationship with God the Father and His children (that is you and me). And if you have “real” relationship with the Father and His children you will want to get together and celebrate the faithfulness of God. Not because of some religious obligation, but rather because you know it pleases the Father when His children get along and gather to praise Him. I mean honestly we are not fooling anyone. You can sing in the choir, serve on the board, you can even dance and shout amen! Without love—love for God and for your neighbour—it is just a bunch of bunk. Todd Agnew a Christian recording artist says it well in his song, “We are all family.”

If we’re all under one Father, that makes us all brothers. We are all family Who’s my brother in a different kind of church? Who’s my sister struggling with her worth? Who’s my mother, gave me all but birth? Who’s my neighbor? Who’s my loved one? Who’s my friend? We are all family

Bud Hallstrom Regarding Bud Hallstrom’s obituary in last weeks’ edition of the Boundary Creek Times and Grand Forks Gazette. Unfortunately, Norman and Delle’s children were not mentioned. The family would like to correct this unfortunate omission. It should have read:

Delle (Norman) Hoffman, children Kerri (Ian) Trip and Darren (Tracey) Hoffman, great niece and nephews Jessica and Ryan Trip and Daniel Hoffman.

Thank You The Hallstrom and Hoffman families would like to extend their sincere thank you to all the friends that made this very, very difficult time bearable. The kind words, hugs, phone calls, food and cards were deeply appreciated. In addition, we would like to thank the countless individuals that ran errands, assisted in the service and worked in the background doing the many numerous tasks that made Bud’s celebration of life something he would be very proud of. Although there are certainly some rough roads ahead, this amazing support certainly accelerated our families healing process. Again, thank you and our families wish each and everyone of you a happy and prosperous 2014. Donations can still be made to the Bud Hallstrom Memorable Fund at the Heritage Credit Union in Greenwood.

dents are paid accordingly, early term apprentices typically earn between 50 per cent and 60 per cent of a journeyperson’s pay rate. ACE-IT students enjoy even greater benefits in that they earn credit towards both high school graduation requirements and apprenticeships. Some of their tuition and supplies are covered, so they pay less than adults in the same programs. “Some delight in the fact they pick up their Selkirk College graduation diplomas before they get their high school Dogwood diplomas,” says Obradovic. Selkirk’s intake dates align nicely with high school semesters so students can exercise one of a number of training options: they can take a nine-month (September to May) program such as Mechanics or Hairdressing; they can take a six-month course (February to July) in Carpentry, Electrical, Metal Fabricator or Millwright/Machinist; or they may opt for the August to January intake of Carpentry or Electrical. Professional Cook runs seven months from September to March, as does Welding, where students enjoy an added benefit which enables them to ladder into the Metal Fabricator program in February if they choose. The next intake date for ACE-IT programs is February, 2014 with most programs fully subscribed. Some seats are currently available in the Carpentry Program which starts next month. Students interesting in the ACE-IT program should talk to their high school counselor, their ACE-IT coordinator or a Selkirk College counsellor.
