Relay for Life needs help

The Canadian Cancer Society is putting out an urgent call for volunteers for the 2014 Relay For Life, scheduled to take place on June 21. Last year the Relay event in Port Alberni was cancelled due to a variety of factors, but many teams ended up either commuting to the Nanaimo Relay or hosting their own event in town, such as an all-night movie marathon. The Society will make a decision in February as to whether it is feasible to proceed with the Port Alberni Relay in 2014. Food sustainability has been a passion for Jen Fisher-Bradley for many years, even leading her to create the Women’s Food and Water Initiative in the Alberni Valley. Fisher-Bradley will attend an Organic Seed Growers’ Alliance conference in Corvallis, Oregon Jan. 30–Feb. 1. “Organic seed is under-supplied in North America,” says Fisher-Bradley, who with her husband Stephen operates Mirabel Urban Farm in South Port. They have been growing

plants on their city lot for food and seeds for a number of years. Fisher-Bradley will be raising money through a variety of means to help fund her trip to Oregon. She plans to share the knowledge she gains from attending the conference. She attended a similar conference in Richmond, B.C. a few years ago. Fisher-Bradley is affiliated with Farm Folk City Folk in Vancouver and said there is talk of forming a seed co-op. “This could be done on a large acreage or in your backyard,” she said. “Producing seed doesn’t have to take up much room.

Fisher-Bradley will be at the Farmer’s Market at First Baptist Church in Cherry Creek on Saturday, Jan. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon selling locally grown seed, Garry Oak acorns and aloe vera plants. She will also have a booth set up at or near Centennial Pier at Harbour Quay on Sunday, Jan. 19 and again Sunday, Jan. 26 from 1–3 p.m. each day for seed sales and loonie toonie auctions. City asks for 5.3% tax increase WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Port Alberni homeowners are slated to pay five per cent more in property taxes this year if the city’s 2014 budget is approved, city manager Ken Watson said. He explained the increase during a presentation of the city’s draft five-year financial plan on Monday, Jan. 13. The plan calls for residential homeowners to pay 5.3 per cent more in property taxes this year. According to Watson, the owner of a home valued at $190,000 would pay $89 more in property tax this year at that rate. The city also plans

to increase utilities— water and sewer—by approximately 10 per cent each. For example, a family of four, with average water consumption, might expect to pay $308 per year for water. The average annual cost per household for sewer fees would be $222. With garbage pickup remaining frozen to 2012 costs, the average annual utility charges, factoring in the increases, would be $628 (or $52 per month). The utility fee increases are expected to cover $625,000 in water projects and $530,000 in sewer work. The city expects to fetch $732,000 more this year in property taxes than it did last year with the estimated 5.3 per

cent increase, Watson noted. The increases result from industrial and business tax issues, as well as from borrowing. Industrial taxes are frozen at 2012 rates until 2017. Business taxes will see a two per cent hike based on BC Assessment growth projections in market sectors. Three city projects are scheduled to be paid for through borrowing. The district energy system will cost $10 million; $1.9 million for which has already been received with the balance to be paid for through borrowing. Water treatment upgrades to meet new VIHA regulations will cost the city $4 million—$2 million from reserve accounts

and $2 million through borrowing. The loan payments would cost $146,000 per year, the cost of which is covered by the utility fee increase. And sewage treatment upgrades will cost $16 million. The city already received an $11 million grant. The $5.75 million balance would have to be borrowed, the loan repayment of which would cost $234,000 per year and would be covered by the increase in utility fees. Budget pressures are also coming from several high ticket increases including a nine per cent hike in hydro costs; a seven per cent increase in library costs; and a six per cent increase in the RCMP contract. Several projects will also tap the city’s

reserve accounts. Improvements to Canal Beach will cost $500,000 and will be paid for out of land sale reserve funds. Facility upgrades to the tune of $662,000 are planned for the fire hall, police station, Bob Dailey Stadium and Harbour Quay. The work will be paid for with $377,000 from operating expenses and $285,000 from grants and reserve funds. Repairs to the Harbour Quay clock tower will cost $250,000 and will be paid for out of the land sale reserve fund. The city also plans to replaces various pieces of equipment, which will cost $1 million. There is $550,000 earmarked for road construction

and $730,000 for drainage work. The amounts fall below the $4 million per year required for sustainable levels, Watson said. A structural upgrade to the Gertrude Street bridge will cost $250,000, which will be underwritten by the city’s gas tax fund and potential grant money and won’t affect property taxes. A trail project that

will connect Roger Creek trails to existing city trails will cost $100,000 and will be paid for with gas tax and grant money. Coun. Port Alberni RCMP are on the hunt for a man who robbed the Petro-Canada station on River Road Monday night. Police responded to a hold-up alarm at the station at approximately 10:15 p.m., Cpl. Jen Allan said. A man entered the store brandishing an undisclosed weapon and demanded money from the cashier. The clerk complied and gave up an undisclosed amount of cash then the man fled towards the Kitsuksis Dike. No one was injured in the incident. “This is the first armed robbery like this in Port Alberni in a very long time,” Allan said. Police were

unsuccessful in tracking the suspect with a police dog. Investigators are working with PetroCanada management to review security equipment. Police dog units also returned to the area Tuesday morning to look for articles connected to the incident that may have been dropped or discarded, she said. The suspect is described as a thinly built young Caucasian male, standing approximately five feet six inches tall. He was dressed in black clothing, wearing a winter style coat with the hood up, black and grey BMX-style gloves, and a bandana type covering on the lower half of his face. No one was injured in the robbery, and the clerk did the right thing by following the instructions of the suspect, Allan said.

Pair arrested in watch thefts Two Port Alberni residents face theft charges after eight rare pocket watches, including one owned by notorious train robber Bill Miner, were stolen from the Royal BC Museum in Victoria and sold for drugs. Port Alberni RCMP arrested the pair on Jan. 7 at a Kendall Avenue residence. Brian Gerald Holt, 44, and his girlfriend Stacy Croft, 29, have each been charged with theft over $5,000. City council is buying special equipment for a water treatment upgrade even though the project hasn’t been approved in the 2014 budget process yet. Council voted Jan. 13 to go ahead with the purchase anyway. The $340,000 contract was awarded to Xylem Water Solutions Canada, whose bid was the lowest among four bids submitted. The price tag is to be underwritten by the water reserve fund. Xylem also submitted a tender that was the next highest bid; one proposed highpressure equipment and the other lowpressure equipment. The project is part of the $4 million water treatment upgrades required by Vancouver Island Health Authority 4-3-2-1 policy, city engineer Guy Cicon said. The reason Cicon needed approval for the equipment purchase now instead of after the budget is finalized in May has to do with timing, he explained. The equipment is specialized and requires seven

Elk slaughter must stop Harper rapped for all wrong reasons The stakes have been raised in the hunt for the person or people illegally killing elk in the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District. Two more entities—a private business and the Coastal BC Guide Outfitters Association—have added to the already hefty reward for information about the elk kill, raising the total to $31,000. This isn’t just about a few dead animals: the poachers are threatening a way of life for First Nations on the West Coast, and more importantly are threatening the existence of a dwindling number of Roosevelt Elk on Vancouver Island. We are fortunate in the ACRD that so many of our local First Nations have teamed up and taken an active role in trying to solve this unnecessary slaughter of elk. We hope the perpetrators are caught and soon—before the slaughter completely eradicates all efforts to sustain the elk herds on the West Coast. Another point that has been raised is how few conservation officers there are patrolling such a large territory. We have tremendous respect for the job these officers already do in our region, but with such precious natural resources to protect, they should have more of their own resources. Sergeant Ben York and his team have put countless hours into this investigation already and we applaud their effort. We think it’s a shame conservation’s area of responsibility has grown while their numbers have shrunk. — Alberni Valley News

ICTORIA – Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s latest visit to B.C. was portrayed as these things are today: besieged by protesters, hiding from an evervigilant media, cynically campaigning for the 2015 federal election. TV couldn’t get enough of the two “environmental activists” who dressed as waiters to slip onstage at a business breakfast in Vancouver. They’re not environmentalists, just allpurpose protesters using the flavour of the month. They are associated with a group calling itself “No One Is Illegal,” a collection of anarchists that wants to do away with national borders, and of course capitalism. As their now-famous sign said, they want “climate justice now.” Organizer Brigette DePape explained to a co-operative CBC

TV host that the recent typhoon in the Philippines that killed thousands of people was caused by global warming, which of course is caused mainly by the Alberta “tar sands.” I won’t dwell on this routine idiocy, except to say the number of hurricanes that struck North America in 2013 was zero, and that hasn’t happened since 1994. Also, “climate justice” is like “social justice,” in that both require confiscation of earned wealth. DePape is the former Senate page fired in 2011 for a similar sign stunt. She’s now a professional Harper hater, with support from the U.S.-based Tides Foundation among others. One of the issues Harper didn’t take questions on was the consolidation of 11 federal fisheries libraries into two, one of them in Sidney, B.C. This is portrayed as part of Harper’s so-called “war on science,” and

has been compared with the Romans burning the library of Alexandria in ancient Egypt. Fisheries Minister Gail Shea defended the cost-cutting measure by pointing out that almost all access to these libraries is now digital, so maintaining 11 duplicated sets of printed reports is a waste of taxpayer dollars. An anonymous federal scientist fired back on his blog that the head of one of these libraries retired before the contents could even be catalogued, much less completely digitized for online access. So this material wasn’t even properly organized? Users were supposed to browse until they stumbled on something pertinent? The ministry reported that the average number of people other than federal fisheries staff who used these libraries averaged between five and 12 per year. That’s for all

11 facilities combined. And if anyone has even one example of information that was available and isn’t now, they should identify it. Harper’s got plenty to answer for, no question. To take one of many examples, spending our borrowed money on TV ads for a “Canada Job Grant” program that hasn’t even been introduced in Parliament, much less set up, isn’t just wasteful. It’s dishonest and cruelly misleading to the unemployed people the ads pretend to offer help. Harper’s visit to B.C. added a couple of scripted events, starting with softball questions at the Vancouver business breakfast. Then he was off to a photo op at the Kinsol trestle on Vancouver Island, where he announced three more years of funding for the Trans-Canada Trail. I’m as relieved as anyone that Harper is not killing this modest federal project that started in 1992, but this is not news.

Seniors! There was a meeting on Dec. 16, 2013 of federal and provincial finance ministers and advisors to talk about how to enrich the Canadian Pension Plan. Media interviews showed confused verbiage about no consensus was achieved. It was an expensive waste of effort. Fellow elders, we are a strong voting block that can influence political party thinking. We can rationalize what is good for this country or at least determine the lesser of the wrongs. Then we can leverage with our voice, and with our vote that the government heed the elders’ advice. If economic dark clouds are rising, then we must keep our wallets tight and use our resources as a tactic for change. As one group, we can support the political organization that listens to us, that hears our concerns and will get the good decisions moving. We will need to pressure that political group strategically but firmly with positive reinforcement. Support what they will do and hold them accountable for the collective good of the country. If politicians are abandoning the elderly into the stress of poverty, then we seniors must be prepared to help those who

Back in the day, when my wife and I were racking up 40 years of combined oceangoing merchant marine service between us, New Zealand was known for having a human population of three million along with 70 million sheep. Presently their human population has risen to around 4.5 million, while the sheep population has declined to around 32 million. We have recently wondered if a large number of those sheep have found their way to British Columbia. The bleating is occurring in so many letters to the editor, blogs and in social media, with nauseating and erroneous repetition about “inevitable oil spills from tankers plying our pristine, wind-swept coastline”. It would be nice if there were some facts to go along with the opinions of the twolegged bleaters. Let’s hope BC’s silent majority will become more vocal, and support the Northern Gateway and LNG pipeline proposals, before the poutine really hits the fan.

So many common phrases refer to the passage of time. Time marches on. Time flies when you’re having fun. Timeless beauty. Just in time. Many more phrases come to mind effortlessly. As people on this earth, we often feel that we are at the mercy of time. Unfortunately, time has no consciousness and no sense of mercy. As fearful and foreboding as that may seem, though, the passage of time also brings us closer to the promises of God’s Word for a time of justice and forgiveness for His people. In a hymn written in 1937 “O Day of God Draw Nigh” the composer writes: Bring justice to our land, that all may dwell secure, and finely build for days to come foundations that endure. Bring to our world of strife thy sovereign word of peace, that war may haunt the earth no more, and desolation cease. As we begin another year, let us look forward to the day of God, just as the composer did and let us each do all that we can to share the peace and light of the Gospel each day.

2014 Infiniti Q50 challenges the old order Infiniti has had a bit of an identity crisis over the past year with a wholesale change in the way it names its products. Gone is the JX crossover, it’s called the QX60 now and the G 37 sedan has been replaced with the Q50 sedan. Q signifies for cars and QX for crossovers or SUVs. The outgoing G37 was already a very worthy on-road performer but a bit too simplistic in the inside. Now, Infiniti has taken things up a notch with the Q50, adding a dynamic look, sumptuous interior and class leading technology. Looks It could be argued that the current BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class are a bit conservative, while this Q50 and the major competitor, Lexus IS, are much edgier. This is especially true with the front grille. The rest of the Q50 is nicely sculpted, with flowing lines and an almost elegant rear end. Sold as a base model, sport trim, all wheel drive (AWD), premium, and even a hybrid, there is a broad market for this sedan. Starting at $37,500 and ramping up to the AWD sport model at $49,950, there is a substantial discount with the Q50 when you compare it to a similarly equipped BMW. he Alberni District Secondary School Armada senior boys basketball team knew what it took to win and cleanly executed it in winning their second straight title at the Totem tourney. The Armada handily beat the Reynold’s Road Runners 81-42 to win Totem 59 at home last weekend. Armada guard Josh DeJong scored 20 points on the night, while forward Luke Bradley scored 14 points and was named tournament MVP. “Our team set to do what we hoped to do and expected to do and that was win this one,” head coach Neelam Parmar said. Playing before a capacity crowd at the ADSS gym, the Armada were up 19-14 at the end of the first quarter and were leading 34-26 at the half. They fought a Reynolds surge in the third quarter and finished strong in the fourth quarter to seal the win. The difference between winning and losing was the experience of having already won a Totem title. “Our seniors knew what it took to win and they expected to win this year,” Parmar said. “Our team is 8-3 in exhibition and tournament play so far this season so they’ve made winning

and flow of the game during substitutions,” Parmar said. “Playing good defense is another weapon in our arsenal,” Parmar said. With another Totem title on the mantel the Armada has to concentrate on the regular season, which starts on Thursday against Cowichan. The

team’s goal now is to not level out after winning Totem. “This (Totem) can’t be our sole focal point of the season. We can’t treat Totem like it’s a Super Bowl win,” Parmar said. “It’s like a big pre-season win.” Winning a second Totem title is vindication and validation for the Armada basketball program, which had fallen on hard times over the years. It’s a victory for present players, but also for players from those tough times too. “We were treated like doormats. It wasn’t uncommon for our team to be out of it in the first five minutes and then to get clobbered by 40-50 points,” Parmar said. The change can be credited to youth and family, he said. The junior and seniors boys and girls teams don’t exist in separate silos or programs, and are instead members of the same family. Parmar credited the work of Harold Lefty Williams, who coached the junior boys team, with feeding strong players into the senior program. The senior team called up a handful of junior players for the weekend. “We try to include them as much as possible because we want them to experience what Totem is like and to want it for themselves when they become seniors,” Parmar said.

lberni basketball fans got a look at the future of the Armada senior girls basketball team and that future looks bright. The Alberni District Secondary School senior girls basketball team beat the Parklands Panthers 69-62 to win the Totem girls division title. The victory wasnâ€™t just special because the Armada came from behind to win it on home court. It was also because they clinched the title while playing four junior players and one senior player on the floor for nearly the whole fourth quarter. â€œThe Grade 11 girls really stepped up and showed leadership when we needed it the most,â€? Armada head coach Al Seredick said. â€œI am so proud of our girls. I canâ€™t say enough about their character.â€? The Panthers led the scoring through three quarters. But the Armada switched from a man-to-man defense to a box-and-one zone, and with the score 39-30 for Parkland at the half the Armada kept it close. Fouls plagued both
