PROUDLY SERVING THE COMMUNITIES OF ROSSLAND, WARFIELD, TRAIL, MONTROSE, FRUITVALE & SALMO

Arts funding helps paint picture of new library/museum Trail Historical Society, VISAC and the Trail and District Community Arts Council receive boost from ArtsVest BY VALERIE ROSSI Times Staff

Greater Trail residents dreaming of a new library/museum will soon have some tangible plans to eyeball. The Trail Historical Society has received $1,000 from artsVest, a matching incentive and sponsorship training program, and intends to direct the awarded funds to producing library/ museum project visuals and literature for public information sessions held in the coming months. The public will ultimately decide whether the facility is worth the investment later through referendum in November during the municipal election. “A new facility of this nature (an integrated museum/archives and library) has been the focus of our efforts for many years now,” said Sarah Benson, director of Trail Museum and Archives. “It is an extremely exciting project that will allow for increased and enhanced programming by both the library and the museum, which is key to engaging our visitors.” The society has teamed up with the City of Trail and the Trail and District Public Library and are currently working with Boni-Maddison Architects from Vancouver to develop conceptual plans for the new facility slated for the former Eagles property at the south end of downtown. Once the team develops construction and operating budgets for the project, the public consultation process will begin. The Trail Historical Society is not the only local non-profit to qualify for funding. VISAC Gallery

has secured $2,500, money slated for more art shows and classes geared toward youth, according to executive director Mark Enns. “We are doing an afternoon pottery class on Mondays with Sanctuary and trying to start to art classes for children that are home schooled,” he said. “Our hopes are that this funding will allow these programs to continue and introduce more young people to their creative sides.” The Trail and District Community Arts Council took home the largest contribution of $6,000 from artsVest. Arts council's Betty Seinen said the organization is also looking to its younger audience with discussion of a children's series, which is just one of the innovative programs in the works. The funding will also allow the arts council to invest in its existing community offerings, she added. “If you get $12,000 in a year, because you've gotten $6,000 in grants and then $6,000 matching, that's quite a whack of money,” she said. “That gives you a lot of room for programming and allows you to take some risks and try new things.” The three Trail organizations were among 82 across the province to be approved under the national program, which is designed to stimulate business sponsorship and corporate engagement in arts and culture. The recipients are now tasked with going out into the community and securing matching funds. “The whole idea is to try to help arts organizations have a bit more of something that will sweeten the pot when they approach business sponsors, just to encourage business to support the arts,” explained Kathleen Speakman, artsVest B.C. program coordinator.

LIFE SAVING JOLT

Paramedic Billie Padavell has seen first hand how an automated external defibrillator (AED) saves lives. As part of the annual Trail Heart and Stroke Heart Rally, Padavell will be in the food court at the Waneta Mall today at noon and 3 p.m. to provide a simple step-by-step demonstration how to use the portable device. AEDs check heart rhythm, and can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm, especially in the case of sudden cardiac arrest.

Ski bus a big success

The Rossland News In less than one month the city’s free bus service has seen overwhelming use, says Tourism Rossland. The day and evening service transported a total of 2,327 passengers over the 17 days of operation in December for an average of 137 people per day. The highest use was on Tuesday, Dec. 31 with 315 passengers using the service. Tourism Rossland executive director Deanne Steven said it was encouraging to see the wide range of users, including visitors, staff, locals, seniors and children. “It proves that this initiative is of high importance to all Rosslanders,” she said. “It was never expected that this many people would be riding the bus, and it also demonstrates the importance of it being free to all riders.” Steven said the service not only saved the city and its visitors some time, it has also saved the environment. Making a “quick carbon emission calculation,” Tourism Rossland determined the service has been responsible for a reduction of carbon emissions of 2.34 tonnes (based on a reduction of cars being used, and two people per car) in just one month. The shuttle is operated by Betty Go Hard, which has employed seven people during the course of the winter and provided seven additional jobs to the local economy. “Additionally, Interior Signs did a fabulous job on the shuttle wrap and design, as well as the shuttle signs, and Hall’s Printing designed and printed the schedule,” said Steven. The project is already well utilized, and was the reason it was supported by over 40 businesses and organizations with $43,000 of contributions. The remaining funding for the project came from the Resort Municipality Initiative. Although Rossland has not yet been confirmed in their quest to become a two-percent Resort Municipality Initiative community, Steven and the Tourism Rossland board felt that it was important to go ahead with the project in the interim. Fighting the flu

Rossland

By Sheri Regnier Times Staff

Valerie Rossi photo

Four-year-old Ammon Champagne of Trail received a nasal spray to protect against the seasonal flu Friday by public health nurse Natasha Quiding. A surge in flu cases, generally the H1N1 strain, has led to residents lining up to get poked. Downtown Trail pharmacies report the vaccine has been out of stock since last week, however the influenza vaccine is available at the Kiro Wellness Centre by appointment. Adults and children who have chronic health conditions are most at risk of developing flu-related complications, so with flu season lasting until March, it is still worth getting the shot. Vaccine supplies are monitored on a daily basis, but the current demand could mean the supplies run out before the end of the season. Call public health at 364-6219 for more information.

Western Financial takes over Falkins Insurance By Sheri Regnier Times Staff

Falkins Insurance, the largest insurance brokerage in the Kootenays, including branches in Fruitvale and Salmo, recently became part of Alberta-based Western Financial Group. As part of the acquisition, all 11 Falkins branches and more than 100 employees became part of Western, including four people at the Main Street office in Fruitvale and two at the Main Street branch in Salmo. The Fruitvale branch first opened its doors in 1954, and was purchased

by John’s Insurance Agency in 1977, along with the Salmo office. In 1998, John’s sold 50 per cent of the company to Falkins Insurance Group and on Jan. 1, the Western Financial Group purchased the other 50 per cent from John’s. Both locations had its signage changed to Western Financial Group Jan. 9, and all Falkins employees retained their positions, according to Eric Michalko, Western’s manager of public relations. “They will continue to serve their communities as part of Western,” he said. “Moving forward custom-

ers will see a brand transition but exceptional customer service will remain unchanged.” Western first began a partnership with Falkins in 2005 when it acquired a 20 per cent ownership stake. Two years ago, the High River, AB, company increased its stakeholder position to 40 per cent, and as of Dec. 31 last year, acquired full partnership of the company. “All Falkins employees have known for quite some time that Western was planning to acquire full ownership.” said Michalko.

The company relocated to Cranbrook in the early 1900s and grew to become the largest general insurance company in the Kootenays, with branches from Kaslo to Elkford to Golden. Western Financial Group was founded in 1996, employs about 1,800 people, and serves more than 790,000 customers in Western Canada from its 160 locations and affiliates.

Giving your Christmas tree a second life is an ecofriendly way to support the 2014 grad class. The J.L. Crowe graduating class will be circling Trail neighbourhoods all day Sunday to pick up Christmas trees left curbside and bring them to the landfill for recycle. The city pays the group $750 for the somewhat prickly work and the regional district waives all tipping fees. “The money we receive is used to fund grad events such as memory walk and prom,” said Jesse Bartsoff, 2014 grad class president. For those wishing to “de-tree” before that date, there are designated drop off points in Waneta, Glenmerry, Sunningdale, Tadanac, Miral Heights and East and West Trail, where trees can be piled for pick up. Students will pass through the area only once, so residents are asked to place clean trees on the edge of the driveway away from any snow and ice on Saturday night or earlier. All decorations and any type of plastic covers need to be removed from the trees before recycling, and students are directed to de-tinsel and strip decorations from trees left curbside or at the designated drop off site.

Sexting verdict serves as warning Avalanche blocks highway VAlemont

THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA Canada’s teens were warned Friday to be aware of who takes their picture and where those images may end up after a Victoria-area girl was convicted of distributing child pornography. The 17-year-old girl who sent explicit texts of her boyfriend’s former girlfriend was also convicted of possession of child porn and uttering threats. “Always be careful of what you allow of pictures to be taken, what you send to whom,” Crown Prosecutor Chandra Fisher said outside of court moments after the teen’s guilty verdict. “(Teens) need to be careful what they send, what they send to each other and where it might end up.” Fisher said there are many tragic Canadian incidents where young people have taken their own lives over images distributed by others over the Internet.

The suicides of Canadian teens Rehtaeh Parsons and Amanda Todd have prompted nationwide cyberbullying awareness campaigns and calls for tougher laws to prevent Internet harassment. The girl was found guilty of the child pornography charges because the subject of her so-called sexting messages was also a teen. She cannot be named because she was convicted under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The uttering threats conviction resulted from the teen’s

Internet threats, via texts and on Facebook, to physically harm the other teen if she came to her Victoriaarea high school. The girl also threatened to harm the other teen’s unborn child through texts. Youth Court Judge Sue Wishart said the thousands of text messages were meant to intimidate the victim and the tenor of the messages was “mean, rude and antagonistic. The images in question come within the definition of child pornography.” But the case didn’t end Friday as defence counsel Christopher Mackie said he plans to launch a constitutional argument against the conviction. Mackie told the court he would argue that it’s unconstitutional to charge youths who engage in sexting with child-pornography offences because the process of sending erotic images by wireless devices is currently lawful for adults.

Outside court, Mackie told reporters his client and her family feel picked on by the law. The case will be back in court on Jan. 28 to set a date for the constitutional arguments. “We wanted to ideally avoid this kind of situation that we have now where my client has a conviction of child pornography,” Mackie said. “The concern being that if ultimately we succeed on the constitutional argument and it’s found to be unconstitutional, then she’s had to deal with the stigma of having been painted a child pornographer for the interim.” He said making the constitutional argument was “a necessary step in the process of fighting this fight.” The court heard earlier that the convicted teen sent the photos and thousands of other texts when she was 16 and was charged last year. The case resulted when the boyfriend broke up with his former girlfriend and moved to Victoria. The boyfriend allowed his new Victoria girlfriend to see explicit photos of his former girlfriend, which eventually resulted in the distribution of the photos and ensuing threats. People who post or transmit an intimate image of another person without that person’s consent could face up to five years in prison.

THE CANADIAN PRESS VALEMOUNT, B.C. - No vehicles were caught under a large avalanche that rolled over Highway 16 and blocked off traffic on Monday near Mount Robson on the Alberta-B.C.. boundary, said RCMP. The 400-metre-wide slide of snow and debris came down at about 9:30 in the morning. Initially, RCMP said they weren’t sure if any vehicles were under the heavy, packed snow. Greg Bruce, district operations manager with the Transportation Ministry, said they have confirmed that no vehicles were caught by the slide and no one was injured. However, RCMP said that a person in a pickup truck did attempt to get through the slide and became stuck in the debris and packed snow. No detours were available to get around the slide. Bruce said an avalanche technician was over at the slide assessing the potential danger Monday afternoon. Avalanche control was expected to begin immediately after the assessment. “The area has received 50 to 60 centimetres of snow over the last three days,” he said in an interview. “Snowpack levels at our Robson weather station, which

is really close to where the avalanche took place, is sitting at a higher level than we’ve seen it in the last 20 years at this time.” The heavy snow over the weekend was followed by a deluge of heavy rain Monday. “Conditions deteriorated rapidly,” Bruce said. Flagger crews were at both ends of the slide, and in Tete Jaune, McBride, Valemount and Jasper, Alta. Highway 1 is also closed indefinitely due to the avalanche danger, and Bruce said he cannot guess when it will be re-opened. Canadian Avalanche Centre forecaster Eirik Sharp said the most dangerous areas are currently parts of the Sea-to-Sky highway on B.C.’s south coast, and the Columbia Mountain region in the Interior. While the danger of natural avalanches has subsided since the weekend, backcountry enthusiasts should be wary of the heightened threat of humantriggered slides, Sharp said from Revelstoke. “People are going to be chomping at the bit,” he said. “Riding conditions across the province haven’t been very good until this point and on the surface now with this good load of snow, things are looking really good.”

Fines for hunting lodge

THE CANADIAN PRESS DRYDEN, Ont. - Eleven people from Canada, the United States and New Zealand have pleaded guilty to a total of 68 charges for offences that took place at a hunting and fishing lodge in northwestern Ontario. They have also been ordered to pay a total of $72,500 in fines. Steve Herbeck, former owner of Andy Myers Lodge on Eagle Lake, west of Dryden, was fined a total of Briefs $7,500 and his business was fined a total of $27,000 for 22 offences. Six lodge employees and lodge guests from Wisconsin, New York and New Zealand were among those who pleaded guilty to various hunting and fishing-related offences. The charges were laid following a twoyear covert investigation involving Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers and officials from the U.S. and New Zealand. Court was told Herbeck and his staff encouraged clients to hunt wolves without a licence, and staff then used their own licences to validate the wolf or arranged for guests to buy licences afterward. Herbeck also allowed guests to fish without a licence and later sold them backdated fishing licences, and also fed guests grouse and mallard duck, which the lodge was not allowed to sell.

Toss pot with kitty litter THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - Users of medical marijuana will soon be prohibited from growing their own pot - and the federal government is suggesting they turn to their feline friends for help in properly disposing of leftover stashes. Health Canada recommends blending marijuana with water and mixing it with cat litter to mask the odour before tossing it into regular household trash. Under the existing program, to be phased out by April 1, people are issued licences to grow marijuana for their personal use to help ease the symptoms of painful conditions. Now thousands have until the end of March to destroy any pot they have grown but haven’t consumed.

Bank survey shows positive signs THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - Growth in the U.S. is helping lift the economy, but corporate Canada remains concerned about weak demand and domestic uncertainty, the latest business outlook survey by the Bank of Canada suggests. “The winter business outlook survey provides some positive signs for the economic outlook, notably for exports and investment, although responses do not yet appear to suggest a significant strengthening,” the bank said. “For many businesses, weak demand and domestic uncertainty continue to temper sales expectations and expansion plans.” The survey by the Bank of Canada, done between Nov. 18 and Dec. 12, found that 34 per cent of those surveyed saw sales growth over the last 12 months, while 37 per cent saw lower sales. However, 51 per cent said they expected sales to improve over the next

and modestly drive Canadian growth. “For the Bank of Canada, the moderate growth profile and well-anchored inflation expectations imply little reason to move off the sidelines in the near term.” The business outlook survey results came as the central bank’s senior loan officer survey suggested a slight easing in overall business-lending conditions, continuing a trend since late 2009. “The balance of opinion regarding the demand for credit from financial institutions during the fourth quarter tilted slightly toward an increase in demand, mainly from corporate borrowers,” the Bank of Canada said. “This follows a reported decrease in demand from all categories of borrowers in the third quarter of 2013.” The Bank of Canada is expected to make its next interest rate announcement and release its updated monetary policy report Jan. 22.

Time to phase out unsafe tank cars, says CN THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - The railway industry wants to “aggressively phase out” older model tank cars that have been implicated in several recent accidents, the head of CN Rail’s safety division told an industry forum Monday. But the consensus at the day-long workshop was that there’s no quick fix for a decades-old problem that has almost 80,000 substandard DOT-111 tank cars carrying flammable liquids on North American tracks. And whatever the solution, the cost eventually will be borne by consumers. Sam Berrada, director general of safety and occupational

12 months compared with 22 per cent who expected sales to fall. The balance of opinion also suggested more firms expected to increase investment in hard assets and to hire more workers. The survey found 42 per cent of firms expected investment spending on machinery and equipment to rise, while 23 per cent expect to spend less. Meanwhile, 53 per cent expect to hire more employees, while 11 expect to have fewer workers over the next 12 months. The more optimistic outlook for the Canadian economy follows a weaker than expected jobs report last week that found 45,900 jobs were lost in December. TD Bank economist Connor McDonald said the Bank of Canada survey results Monday were indicative of the cautious optimism that has been building in the economy. “A stronger economic outlook for the U.S. will continue to support future sales

health services for CN, told an overflow crowd of industry types, regulators, lobbyists and local first responders that railways “will continue to push aggressively” for safer, stronger tank cars. A derailment and fire involving a CN train in northwestern New Brunswick last week has renewed calls for greater safety in the booming oil-by-rail trade, which became an international cause following last summer’s deadly derailment and fire in LacMegantic, Que. Transport Minister Lisa Raitt responded

on the weekend by promising the government will formalize the standard for new tank car construction adopted by the rail industry in October 2011. “Our government’s new tougher standards to the DOT-111 tank cars are part of our commitment to making the rail sector safer,” spokesman Remi Moreau said in an email Monday. But the government’s announced standards are not new and not tougher - they simply match those already voluntarily adopted by industry

more than two years ago. The forum heard from CN’s Berrada and others that even better cars than the post2011 model might be in order, although Berrada did praise the performance of three post-2011 cars involved in the New Brunswick derailment. Moves to date, however, don’t even begin to address the vast majority of

older rolling stock. Governments in Canada and the United States have been reluctant to deal with the huge number of older DOT-111s, in part because of the cost and logistics. Moreau said Raitt has asked an advisory council “to report back to the minister on additional enhancements and recommendations with respect to the DOT-111.”

Harper rapped for the wrong reasons

P

rime Minister Stephen Harper’s latest visit to B.C. was portrayed as these things are today: besieged by protesters, hiding from an evervigilant media, cynically campaigning for the 2015 federal election. TV couldn’t get enough of the two “environmental activists” who dressed as waiters to slip onstage at a business breakfast in Vancouver. They’re not environmentalists, just all-purpose protesters using the flavour of the month. They are associated with a group calling itself “No One Is Illegal,” a collection of anarchist kooks that wants to do away with national borders, and of course capitalism. As their now-famous sign said, they want “climate justice now.” Organizer Brigette DePape explained to a co-operative CBC TV host that the recent typhoon in the Philippines that killed

thousands of people was caused by global warming, which of course is caused mainly by the Alberta “tar sands.” I won’t dwell on this routine idiocy, except to say the number of hurricanes that struck North America in 2013 was zero, and that hasn’t happened since 1994. Also, “climate justice” is like “social justice,” in that both require confiscation of earned wealth. DePape is the former Senate page fired in 2011 for a similar sign stunt. She’s now a professional Harper hater, with support from the U.S.-based Tides Foundation among others. One of the issues Harper didn’t take questions on was the consolidation of 11 federal fisheries libraries into two, one of them in Sidney, B.C. This is portrayed as part of Harper’s so-called “war on science,” and has been compared with the Romans burning the

library of Alexandria in ancient Egypt. Fisheries Minister Gail Shea defended the costcutting measure by pointing out that almost all access to these libraries is now digital, so maintaining 11 duplicated sets of printed reports is a waste of taxpayer dollars. An anonymous federal scientist fired back on his blog that the head of one of these libraries retired before the contents could even be catalogued, much less completely digitized for online access.

So this material wasn’t even properly organized? Users were supposed to browse until they stumbled on something pertinent? The ministry reported that the average number of people other than federal fisheries staff who used these libraries averaged between five and 12 per year. That’s for all 11 facilities combined. And if anyone has even one example of information that was available and isn’t now, they should identify it. Harper’s got plenty to answer for, no question. To take one of many examples, spending our borrowed money on TV ads for a “Canada Job Grant” program that hasn’t even been introduced in Parliament, much less set up, isn’t just wasteful. It’s dishonest and cruelly misleading to the unemployed people the ads pretend to offer help. Harper’s visit to B.C. added a couple of script-

ed events, starting with softball questions at the Vancouver business breakfast. Then he was off to a photo op at the Kinsol trestle on Vancouver Island, where he announced three more years of funding for the Trans-Canada Trail. I’m as relieved as anyone that Harper is not killing this modest federal project that started in 1992, but this is not news. It was a fake public event to justify the cost of a trip so Harper could address a new Conservative riding association. And how is the federal deficit after eight years of tight-fisted Conservative rule? We’re only borrowing about $1 billion a month now, down from the Harper government alltime record deficit of $55 billion in 2009. Some cost cutting is in order all right. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Bruno Mars will have help from the Red Hot Chili Peppers when he performs at the Super Bowl next month. Mars announced Saturday that the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers will join him as part of his halftime show. Super Bowl halftime performers often have collaborators. Last year, Beyonce had Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams from her Destiny’s Child days join her onstage, and two years ago Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. joined Madonna for her halftime show. Mars was named Billboard’s 2013 artist of the year. His hits include the No. 1 song “When I Was Your Man” and his Grammy-nominated sophomore album, “Unorthodox Jukebox.”

‘Lone Survivor’ triumphs

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - “Lone Survivor” triumphed at the weekend box office. The patriotic Navy SEAL drama starring Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch and Ben Foster smashed expectations to earn $38.5 million domestically in its first weekend in wide release, according to studio estimates Sunday. In its eighth weekend, Disney’s icy animated tale “Frozen” stayed cool in the No. 2 spot, earning $15 million and bringing its domestic total to $317 million, passing Disney Animation’s $312 million record set by “The Lion King” in 1994.

MLA questions proposed cuts

In a letter to Transport Minister Lisa Raitt, Kootenay West MLA Katrine Conroy outlined her concerns regarding cuts to Canada Post: Having recently heard of Canada Post’s announcement to eliminate home delivery services and privatization of postal outlets which will result in layoffs of up to 8,000 postal workers, I feel I must speak for my constituents. While this is a federal matter my constituents will be directly affected by these proposed changes and I need to have their concerns addressed. I know Alex Atamanenko, the Federal MP representing BC

Southern Interior is working intensely on behalf of our constituents as well. As the BC NDP Seniors critic for the province, I am very concerned on the negative impact these proposed changes will have on the seniors of this constituency and province wide. Home delivery is necessary for many. Not only does this affect seniors but many with disabilities rely on this service as well. How can Canada Post do online consultations with major cities in the Province of BC and not find it worthy to collect information from smaller

communities, some in remote locations and not “by way of invitation only discussions.” It is hard to understand even after the consultation in which there was only 15.3 percent who were in favour of replacing door to door delivery with community mailboxes, the changes are still being considered. I urge you as the Minister responsible for Canada Post to do whatever you can to ensure Mr. Deepak Chopra, CEO of Canada Post does not go ahead with the proposed changes in the recent announcement. accept a return to army rule (behind a democratic facade). But his nervousness is showing: there’s barely a wall in Cairo that is not covered with “Yes” posters and pictures of Sisi, while people trying to put up “No” posters get arrested. Sisi is probably right to be nervous. In late September, three months after the coup, Zogby Research Services carried out an extensive opinion poll in Egypt for the Sir Bani Yas Forum in Abu Dhabi. It revealed that confidence in the army had already dropped from 93 percent to 70 percent, and it probably has gone on dropping. General Sisi and former President Morsi had almost equal support in the country – 46 percent for Sisi, 44 percent for Morsi (who now faces trial for “inciting his supporters to carry out premeditated murder” and various other alleged crimes). The Zogby poll also revealed that an overwhelming majority of respondents blame the last military regime, under Hosni Mubarak, for the problems facing Egypt today. All in all, this is hardly a firm foundation on which to complete the counter-revolution and build a new military regime. The likeliest outcome of the referendum on the new constitution this week (Tuesday and Wednesday) will be a modest majority for the “Yes”, but on a very low turnout. If it is lower than the mere 33 percent who voted in the referendum on the last constitution in 2012, then Sisi may have to reconsider his plan to run for the presidency. Singer stands by criticism of Harper and oilsands THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Neil Young reaffirmed his criticism of the Harper government and the Alberta oilsands on Monday, responding to a statement from Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s spokesman with a point-by-point refutation. On Sunday, Young held a press conference in Toronto during which he compared a Fort McMurray industrial site he’d visited to the atomic-bomb devastation of Hiroshima, Japan, and said that he was “embarrassed” by a Canadian government that was “trading integrity for money.” Harper spokesman Jason MacDonald countered in a statement that the natural resources sector was a “fundamental part of our country’s economy.” MacDonald continued that “the lifestyle of a rock star relies, to some degree, on the resources developed by thousands of hard-working Canadians every day.” In a statement Monday, Young replied that his issue was with the government “breaking treaties with the First Nation and plundering the natural resources the First Nation has rights to under the treaties.” The 68-year-old also added that “rock stars don’t need oil” and pointed out that he drove his electric car from California to the oilsands and on to Washington “without using any oil at all.” “And I’m a rock star,” continued the Toronto-born guitarist. “My car’s generator runs on biomass, one of several future fuels Canada should be developing for the post-fossil fuel age.”

“As to the thousands of hard-working Canadians,” he added, “we have respect for all working people. The quandary we face is the job they are working on. They are digging a hole that our grandchildren will have great trouble digging their way out of. ... There are better jobs to be developing, with clean energy source industries to help make the world a safer place for our grandchildren.” Young is in the midst of a four-date tour benefitting the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation Legal Fund, with shows still to come in Winnipeg, Regina and Calgary after his Toronto debut. His statement included specific allegations of the toxic environmental effects of the oilsands, while also pointing out that the “oil is not going to Canada, but to China where the air quality has been measured at 30 times the levels of safety established by the World Health Organization.” “Is that what Canada is all about?” he asked. “As a Canadian citizen, I am concerned that this government is not acting within the advice of science.” Young closed by responding to another of MacDonald’s statements, in which he pledged that the government “recognizes the importance of developing resources responsibly and sustainably and we will continue to ensure that Canada’s environmental laws and regulations are rigorous.” “When people say one thing and do another, it is hypocrisy,” Young replied. “Our Canadian environmental laws don’t matter if they are broken.”

THE CANADIAN PRESS VATICAN, Vatican City The archbishop of Quebec, Gerald Cyprien Lacroix, was among a new batch of cardinals selected Sunday by Pope Francis. Lacroix was one of 19 men named to the senior ecclesiastical post in a morning address by Pope Francis at the vatican. The appointment means Lacroix will be part of the group tasked with electing

the next pope, which is a cardinal’s most important task. “I’m touched by the confidence shown by Pope Francis,” he told reporters following Sunday mass in Quebec City. Lacroix will be formally installed as a cardinal at a ceremony at the Vatican on Feb. 22. The native of Saint-Hilaire de Dorset, a small town 300 kilometres east of Montreal, was named Quebec’s archbishop in 2011.

By Times Staff Jacob Boyczuk scored once and added three assists to help the Beaver Valley Nitehawks bounce back from a 3-2 loss to the Kelowna Chiefs Friday with a 6-3 victory over the Grand Forks Border Bruins Saturday. In a lively, penalty-filled affair, the Nitehawks power play went 3-for-5 as they engaged in a seesaw battle with the Border Bruins that the Hawks manage to pull out in the third period. Michael Rand and the Hawks’ Ryan Edwards would exchange goals in the first period to make it 1-1 before a five goal outburst in the second period. Mitch Foyle would net a pair of markers in the first five minutes of the second, before Jackson Purvis and Connor Gross replied with back-to-back goals for the Border Bruins within 90 seconds of each other midway through the frame to tie it at 3-3. However, Andrew Clark would convert an offering from Keenan Patershuck to net the winner at 6:05 of the period, sending it to the third with the Hawks up 4-3. Jeremy Lucchini and Boyczuk would finish the scoring for the Nitehawks as they outshot the

Cross made a good move to draw the defenceman over, and then sent a nice pass to Brandt in close who made no mistake, firing the puck over the glove of Penticton goalie Olivier Mantha. Trail’s Dylan Mascarin, who has been on the injured list for much of the season, then made it 2-0 at 6:56 of the second. Zane Shartz took a Dylan Bowen pass in the corner then sent a sharp slap-pass toward the crease, which Mascarin deftly redirected into the corner of the net. It was Shartz’s first point as a Smokie and Mascarin’s first goal of the season. Both players played well on the night and were a dynamic presence on the front end, creating opportunities, forechecking relentlessly, and even blocking shots. “The effort was there,” said Smoke Eater assistant coach Craig Clair. “We brought some guys in, it’s brought a little energy, given guys opportunities that may not have gotten a week, two weeks, a month ago. So we’re happy with the effort we played one of the top teams in the country, even though the shots may have not been indicative of the play, in the first and third periods we held our own, and maybe even got a few more opportunities than they did.” See SMOKE, Page 12

On Friday, the Chiefs outlasted the Nitehawks putting an end to their 10-game winning streak with a 3-2 victory at the Hawks Nest Friday. Jagger Bowles scored the winning goal at 18:06 of the third period, as the Chiefs hung on in the final minutes despite Hawk pressure for their 24th win. Walker Sidoni opened the scoring with assists going to Dallas Calvin and Fraser Stang, but Kelowna’s Chase Astorino would tie it at 12:50 of the first. The Chiefs would enjoy a pair of twoman advantages in the second frame as Brady Mende would capitalize on the second opportunity at 3:20 with Patershuck and Russell Mortlock off for roughing and high-sticking. After Bowles made it 3-1, Calvin would draw the Hawks within one on a PP of their own at 12:51 but B.V. could not find the equalizer despite a flurry of opportunities. Clark stopped 35 shots in net for the Hawks while Tyler O’Donnell stopped 36 for Kelowna.

Sports Manning not looking too far ahead

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS ENGLEWOOD, Colo. Peyton Manning’s mind is on New England, not his neck. When answering a question last week about whether he could still enjoy the playoffs given his previous post-season disappointments, Manning dropped in a phrase that “the light is at the end of the tunnel for me, no question. Meaning, that at age 37 he certainly has more games and seasons behind him than ahead. Following Denver’s 24-17 win over San Diego on Sunday that sent the Broncos into the AFC championship, Manning was asked whether a medical exam on his surgically repaired neck following the season, which ESPN reported will determine whether he

even plays in 2014, was weighing on his mind. “It’s really not, Manning said. “What’s weighing on my mind is how soon I can get a Bud Light in my mouth. That’s priority one. Neither Manning nor the Broncos have any indication whatsoever that Manning won’t pass his medical exam in March - if anything were wrong, he wouldn’t be playing right now. And Manning is coming off the best statistical season of his brilliant career, one in which he threw for a record 55 touchdowns and 5,447 yards. But he’s not one who likes to look too far ahead anyway, just like he hates going down memory lane or talking about his health publicly. Now, Patriots passrushers Chandler Jones

and Rob Ninkovich might be among his concerns this week. But he didn’t even want to talk about the Patriots following Denver’s win over the Chargers, much less about his upcoming medical exams or his football future. “It was an intense game and up and down and a lot of emotions, Manning said. “Even the Patriots is (too far) ahead. And that question is way far ahead. I am not there. This team has been a oneweek-at-a-time season. Manning has always said that if doctors had told him after his spinal fusion surgeries two years ago that he shouldn’t continue playing football, he would have walked away from the game without regret and that he’d do the same if he receives such medical

advice down the road. All parties expect him to receive the go-ahead to play next season when he has his medical exam in March, which is just like the one he had after last season. Manning was released by the Indianapolis Colts in March of 2012 after four neck operations that weakened his throwing arm. He signed with the Broncos and has gone Jim Bailey photo 27-7 in Denver with 97 TD passes and 24 From left: Skip Desiree Borsato, third Brittany Palmer, second Courtney interceptions counting Schmidt, and lead Leanne Palmer repeated as A-final champions at the Beaver Valley ladies bonspiel on the weekend. playoffs.

Smoke Eaters playing for pride

FROM PAGE 11 Penticton leading scorer Brad McLure would ignite the comeback, banging in a quick cross-crease pass from Jarod Hilderman to make it 2-1. Ben Dalpe then tied it with a shorthanded goal at 14:24, before Sexton fired home the winner. While the Vees held a significant edge in shots after two periods, 36-20, Todd kept it close with numerous big saves. Since returning from injury Dec. 1 the Courtenay native has carried most of the load for the Smoke Eaters, starting nine of 13 games. “The starts help, you know you kind of get into more of a routine and getting more comfortable in the games, and the guys are battling out there, they’re giving it their all, and all I can do is stop the puck. The Smokies poured it on in the final period, outshooting the Vees 12-7 but could not beat

Mantha who stopped 30 shots on the night. In the dying moments, Mascarin missed an opportunity driving to the net but misfiring, and a point shot got by Mantha but just trickled wide. Trail pulled Todd in the final 80 seconds, and was applying pressure until Vees’ six-foot-three defenceman Christopher Rygus drove Riley Brandt face-first into the boards without a penalty call, save an eventual misconduct to the Smokies’ bench for a heated protest at 19:20. The close result was a positive sign for the Smokies, who have struggled on the year. Similar efforts down the stretch should give the Smokies coaching staff some optimism for the future. “Everyone knows they are here for the rest of the ride until the end of the year, let’s earn your spot for next year and let’s bring some pride back into the dressing room, said Clair.

The Smokies hit the road for a three-game weekend against Surrey, Langley, and Coquitlam. Smoke Signals: The Trail Smoke Eaters traded their second top scorer before the trade deadline on Friday, sending Jake Kauppila, 18, to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs for Jakson Elynuik and future considerations. The Illinois native had amassed 10 goals and 17 assists while with the Smoke Eaters, and was briefly the team’s leading scorer after 20-year-old Stephens was traded to Victoria on Thursday. The trade culminated a week of deals that saw 20-year-old Braden Pears dealt to West Kelowna for Zane Shartz on Wednesday. In other trade news, the Nanaimo Clippers acquired the playing rights of former Trail forward Luke Sandler from the Surrey Eagles for future considerations.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took the gold again. For a second year, these funny ladies were the most-est as co-hosts of NBC’s Golden Globes party. Fey explained their return engagement by noting, “This is Hollywood, and if something kind of works they’ll just keep doing it until everybody hates it.” While Poehler and Fey set the perfect irreverent tone for the Globes and its party-hearty tradition, the three-hour live broadcast from Beverly Hills, Calif., was remarkably well-behaved. Emma Thompson played up the Globes’ boozy reputation by arriving on stage barefoot to present the screenplay award in very nonEmmy, non-Oscar style, with her Christian Louboutin high heels in one hand, her martini in the other. A few impolite words did erupt. Winning as best actress for her miniseries “Top of the Lake,” Elisabeth Moss blurted out one of them. It was efficiently bleeped. But whoever was tending the button miscalculated big time with Jacqueline Bisset. Accepting her trophy as best supporting actress for the miniseries “Dancing on the Edge,” the clearly surprised Bisset voiced a lengthy, rambling acceptance that triggered the get-off-the-stage music. Overall, the program was fun, fast-moving and refreshingly uncluttered with the usual awards-show dross. A comic highlight of the evening was “Mr. Golden Globes.” He was introduced by Fey as “my adult son from a previous relationship” but turned out to be Poehler done up as a fussy lad who groused, “This is stupid! I hate being up here!” “Don’t you talk to me like that,” Fey shot back. “Do you want to go live with your father?” “I can’t,” was the churlish reply. “You won’t tell me who it is!” “Well, he’s here tonight,” snapped Fey. “So look around.” With hosts like that, it was hard not to look forward to next year’s Globes, when these Golden gals will be back again.

White House can’t force ‘Kimmel’ off the air

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON - The White House has responded to a petition calling for an apology and the removal of Jimmy Kimmel’s television show by saying the comedian can’t be forced off the air. More than 105,000 people signed the petition on the White House website. It followed an October broadcast of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” featuring a segment in which Kimmel spoke to young children about U.S. government debt owed to China. One boy said “kill everyone in China” when Kimmel asked how the U.S. should repay China. In its response, the White House noted that ABC and Kimmel have apologized, and that the network has removed the segment from future broadcasts and its online platforms.

her do the majority of her work. She is already making enemies there, and because of her lack of supervision, the bakery is becoming filthy and a potential health hazard. Should I keep quiet about what I know or contact human resources (anonymously) and report her misconduct, as a few employees have suggested? I am retiring soon and don’t really need the drama. -Caught in the Middle Dear Caught: You have nothing to report other than hearsay from co-workers. You have not witnessed any of this firsthand, and you don’t know wheth-

my youngest daughter to be the “winner.” My youngest daughter spent both days at a local church feeding the needy. Why was my family separated? Because my middle and youngest are not speaking to each other. When one of them is hurt or angry, they hurl vicious insults at each other. I feel bad about this, but I refuse to sit at a table with these uncaring adults and pretend that all is well. I had a nice TV dinner and a slice of sweet potato pie with whipped cream for the holidays. The losers in this mess are my grandchildren and I. I take responsibility for raising these people, but I will not allow them to ruin my day. -- June Dear June: If your children make your holiday celebrations frustrating and stressful, you do not have to include them. But how sad for all of you to spend these holidays

separated or alone. Please give your children one more chance. Explain to them that nastiness will not be tolerated in your home and the first person to use an insult of any kind will be asked to leave. By now, they know you mean busi-

ness. Dear Annie: I loved your answer to “LastMinute Hostess,” whose stepson and his family always show up hours late for Thanksgiving dinner. Here’s how I would respond to those who arrive late: “You’re just in time for a piece

of pie!” I bet they won’t show up late the next time. -- Fort Myers, Fla. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.

er it is true. The fact that Sue calls you for help is meaningless. Many employees rely on others when given new responsibilities. The negative things you already know about Sue were in your review. They promoted her anyway. You can complain about the condition of the bakery, but Sue’s new coworkers should be the ones to take responsibility for complaining to human resources now. Dear Annie: I have four adult children. I announced to all of them that I would not be holding Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners at my home and that they were welcome to spend the time with their inlaws. My oldest was hurt because she has no in-laws to go to. My son texted his middle sister to ask what was going on. My middle daughter was upset, saying I was allowing

Dear Annie: I am the manager of a small bakery. I’ve had the same employee, “Sue,” for the past nine years. She is lazy and uninvolved, and I gave her a so-so review. Much to my surprise, Sue was promoted to management in another facility. I was happy for her achievement, until I heard she was telling others that she was doing the majority of my work, including ordering supplies. She added that I was suffering from Alzheimer’s and couldn’t remember anything. None of this is true. I think it may have been prompted by my less than stellar review. Since Sue has been promoted, she has been asking me a lot of questions about how to do her job, because she is clueless. She doesn’t know that I am aware of her nasty comments. Last week, another coworker told me that Sue is bullying her assistant and making

YourByhoroscope Francis Drake For Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Today’s Full Moon can create domestic tension. You might feel pulled between the demands of home and family versus the demands of your career and the outside world. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Full Moon today can create an accident-prone situation for you, so pay attention to everything you say and do. Slow down, and take it easy. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Some mild anxiety due to cash flow and money problems might arise because of the Full Moon today. You might be uncertain about whether to put your own interests first or those of someone else. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Today the only Full Moon all year in your sign is taking place. Naturally this will

make you emotional, especially when dealing with partners and close friends. Stay chill. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Be tolerant and cooperative with work colleagues today, because the Full Moon can create tension in all relationships. If doubt arises, do nothing. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Relations with groups or a member of a group might be agitated because of overheated feelings today. This Full Moon energy will pass quickly. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Be diplomatic when dealing with authority figures, including parents, because today’s Full Moon could cause tension. The demands of home and family are challenging the demands of your career. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Because people become

excited during the Full Moon, avoid controversial subjects like politics, religion and racial issues. Keep to safe topics that are not inflammatory. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) You might find it challenging to achieve a balance between what you owe others and what they owe you. After the Full Moon peaks tonight, this will sort itself out. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19)

The Full Moon today is the only Full Moon opposite your sign all year. This is why you feel tension when dealing with others, especially partners and close friends. Be gentle. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Don’t make a big deal about things at work, because everyone feels edgy due to today’s Full Moon. It tends to inflate and heighten people’s emotions.

PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Parents should be vigilant about their kids today, because everyone -- including the family dog -- can feel the tension of today’s Full Moon. Work to promote a relaxing environment. YOU BORN TODAY You are fervent, passionate and committed to whatever you do, and yet you are an easygoing, pleasure-loving person. Many of you encounter the

theme of heroism in your life, whether you are viewed as a hero by others or you work closely with a hero. You fight for justice. This year, a major change might take place as significant as what happened in 2005. Birthdate of: Gene Krupa, drummer; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., civil-rights leader; Regina King, actress.
