Councillor alleges conflict of interest Tilbury cites colleague’s lease of downtown building Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Mission is lifting its ban on barge loading along the Fraser River.

During Monday night’s council meeting, Coun. Nelson Tilbury said Coun. Dave Hensman appeared to have had a conflict of interest because he had “acquired an interest” in a former pool hall located on the southeast corner of First Avenue and Welton Street. The property is located at 33212 First Avenue, which is about block away from the former Buy Low building, recently purchased by the city. “This location is at ground zero for the centre thrust of the revitalization for the city,” said Tilbury. “All of us have been working for a long time on this process with a very keen interest in this intersection. The purchase of the old Buy Low building was made behind closed doors and only a few had any knowledge of the location of the thrust.” Tilbury said that Hensman had such knowledge. “Proper investigation and clarification is required here,” said Tilbury, noting the Community Charter states that if a council member had a direct or indirect pecuniary interest in a matter, then the member must not vote or be a part of any discussion related to it. Tilbury told The Record he brought the issue CONTINUED ON 2

Barge loading ban to be lifted Additional river traffic would reduce truck traffic Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Mission council is taking steps to increase traffic on the Fraser River by amending its industrial general zone to include barge loading as a permitted use. The move will take trucks off the roads, create more good paying jobs, and conform the existing properties that have barge loading facilities, said Mayor Ted Adlem, who directed staff to look into the issue last summer. Mission banned barge loading along its waterfront

in 2007, but five properties along the Fraser River were grandfathered. Two of those properties are located in the old industrial area of town and three are in Silverdale, but not all are operational. Currently, sawdust, coal and aggregate are being loaded onto barges from Mission. “Towing with a tug boat is more environmentally friendly than running hundreds of trucks on the road,” said Adlem. “It has been difficult for them to get financing when you’re dealing with (legal

non-conforming) properties,” said Coun. Larry Nundal. Coun. Nelson Tilbury agreed these property owners have been treated “poorly” and he would like to welcome back the ones who have left to invest in other communities. When the new zoning is in place, any one with property from Hatzic to Silverdale along the river can apply, and council will look at each application individually. The proponent would still need environmental approvals from federal and provincial

governments and go through a public hearing. Ernie Catherwood, owner of Catherwood Towing in Hatzic, said reversing the barge loading ban is a positive move for business and he would be interested in seeking the new zoning. In the last two weeks, Catherwood has had calls from people interested in transporting rocks and scrap iron along the river to other communities. The problem, said Catherwood is “the north side CONTINUED ON 2

Hensman: Accusations ‘wild’

into the public arena after it failed to make it onto the agenda of an in-camera (closed) meeting. Hensman is vacationing out of the country with his family and was absent from Monday’s council meeting. Contacted in California by The Record, Hensman called the accusations against him “wild” and “erroneous.” “The accusations have no foundation,” said Hensman. Hensman says he spent almost two years looking for a facility in

Mission and viewed several others before signing a one-year lease in September for the First Avenue building on behalf of his company Big Sky Ventures, an investment corporation. Sears (Chilliwack) Ltd. is listed as the registered owner of the old pool hall, according to a land title search. At the end of his lease, Hensman has the option to renew or purchase the facility. In addition to operating his business out of the building, he also rents it out to groups for meetings, music

concerts, etc. Currently, the building is also being subleased to a counsellor and used by a church group called The Gathering, which Hensman started in 2012, and still serves as its pastor. The Gathering is a branch of a nonprofit organization called Nex Gen, which is also led by Hensman, and operates out of the same building. The group contributes humanitarian aid to developing countries. The district looked at several sites before the old Buy Low prop-

erty on Welton was purchased, said Hensman. “I didn’t handle the negotiations, and I didn’t know we would get that building.” Plans to revitalize the downtown have been public knowledge since 2012 and the district’s latest land acquisition in the area has always been earmarked for civic use, said Ken Bjorgaard, Mission’s chief administrative officer. Previous councils have discussed that property before, added Bjorgaard. Decisions to purchase property are

made in closed in-camera meetings, and Bjorgaard refused to release any information regarding those discussions, including when negotiations for the building began and which councillors voted on it. “There was an alleged conflict of interest … at this point we (the district) are investigating,” said Bjorgaard. The district will be making a statement before the end of the month to clarify the situation, he added.

of the river doesn’t have a whole bunch of deep water to develop a barge site.” His own property is “almost landlocked” and would “take serious cash to develop it.”

However, he wouldn’t hesitate to make a business case. Although reinstating barge loading operations will encourage some businesses like Catherwood’s to grow, not everyone is as enthusiastic about the

change. Fraser River Safari owner Jo-Anne Chadwick explained her tour boats, have to idle every time a tug boat and barge pass by on the river. “These barges give off huge wakes,” she

explained. While she doesn’t want to stand in the way of anyone making money or improving the local economy, she is concerned about potential harm to the environment. “You can’t do every-

thing you want to do without messing something up. I hope people are mindful of that,” said Chadwick, adding a spill of any kind from a barge or fuel from a tugboat can cause a lot of damage and take years to clean up.

Mission woman ordered Exempt your child to pay $10,000 to SPCA from the FSA Carol Aun

MISSION RECORD

A Mission woman has been ordered by the BC Farm Industry Review Board (BCFIRB) to pay more than $10,000 to the BC Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) after 18 animals were seized from her property in September. The SPCA claims $10,330.48 were spent for boarding ($7,310), veterinary care ($2,780.48) and the attendance of a special provincial constable during the seizure ($240). Faye Parkinson asked the SPCA to return some of her animals and challenged the costs claimed by the non-profit society to care for the 11 cats and seven dogs taken

from her home. Recently, the BCFIRB ruled against the Mission resident on both appeals. In November, Corey Van’t Haaff, presiding member of the BCFIRB who heard the case, directed the SPCA to destroy, sell or dispose of the seized animals. “If any of the animals were to go back, with or without conditions, I am satisfied that the dogs and cats would not maintain good health and some (and ultimately all) would again be found in distress,” Van’t Haaff wrote. Despite Parkinson’s best intentions, she is not able to properly care for the animals, Van’t Haaff added. A veterinarian had

also testified many of the seized pets had extreme matting which contained urine and feces, a few cats had significant dental issues, some animals were seriously underweight, and almost all had ocular dermatitis. Last month the BCFIRB determined $10,330.48 was a reasonable amount for the SPCA to be reimbursed by Parkinson. The non-profit society decreased the original compensation sought by $2,000 and agreed not to seek further veterinary costs or boarding fees related to this matter. Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, the SPCA is entitled to keep any funds raised from the sale or other disposition of the

animals. “All our work is funded by donations,” explained Lorie Chortyk, manager of community relations for the SPCA, adding the society does seek to recover costs in some cases. Charges are still pending against Parkinson, who had 58 cats and dogs taken from her in 2008, said Chortyk. Parkinson was banned from owning more than four animals until August 2012, however she breached the condition and had another year added to the ban. That restriction expired in August 2013, and the SPCA seized 18 animals from Parkinson’s home on Sept. 7, 2013.

Dear parents, We work hard to give your children the best education possible. We celebrate with them when they master a new concept and help them think creatively when tackling a tricky problem.

The FSAs do not count for marks, create needless stress for students, are expensive, and the much-delayed results do not actively support your child’s progress.

But standardized tests like the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) in Grades 4 and 7 take away from those wonderful moments of learning.

The data is also misused to rank schools, which puts pressure on teachers to teach to the test, instead of to students’ interests and needs. That’s why teachers in Mission recommend you send a letter to your school principal requesting that your child be exempted from the FSA.

Gangster arrested on way back from Mission by the RCMP Emergency Response Team as he exited the ferry. Approximately 8.5 ounces of cocaine, 30 grams of heroin and “an assortment of rock cocaine” were seized from his vehicle, according to a CFSEU-BC release. “A room at the Cherry Tree Motel in Saanich

being used by the male was also searched and further evidence was located,” the release read. The man, currently a Lower Mainland resident, was released from custody on conditions. Possession charges have been forwarded to Crown and he is scheduled to appear in court some time in March.

Missing rooster back at home Strangers return big bird Christmas night Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Alan Cook takes a close look at the broken beak of his five-foot rooster. The big bird was stolen from his front yard in October, but was returned on Boxing Day. CAROL AUN PHOTO

Alan Cook is delighted his five-foot rooster is back in his front yard after a threemonth absence. The 300-pound black bird, made of concrete and rebar, was stolen in October from his Turner Street property. After reporting the theft to police, he spent days distributing posters of his missing chicken and even offered a reward for its safe return. After months of waiting, Cook had given up any hope of seeing his beloved rooster again,

and two days before Christmas, he thought of ways he could make a replica. “It’s such a one-of-akind piece,” he said. Cook bought his prized chicken from a collector in Langley many years ago, who had acquired it from an old chicken farm. Cook collects antiques and hasn’t seen its equal. But on Boxing Day morning, as Cook was letting his dog out, he peered over the porch, as he always did, and was surprised to discover his rooster had come home. Cook was so excited

to see the rooster, he didn’t notice the tip of its beak had been chipped off, or the cracked wing, or its broken toes. Cook called his family to tell them the good news. “They knew I was bummed out about it being missing,” said Cook, who isn’t harbouring any bad feelings towards the people that took it. “It’s a good time of year to give something back,” Cook noted. After Cook repairs the statue, he will cement and bolt it down to prevent any future thefts.

Approximately 700 vehicles rolled through police road checks in Mission on New Year’s Eve. Police questioned drivers at several locations throughout the night, including the Mission Bridge, Cedar Valley Connector, Dewdney Trunk Road and Burma Road, near the Visitor Info Centre on the Lougheed Highway, and the Lougheed Highway near Wardrop Street. “Most people had designated drivers,” said Mission RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright. “We were pleased about that.” Police only issued four 90-day driving suspensions for people who blew more than the legal limit in a breathalyzer. It was a quiet night until about 2 a.m. when numerous disturbances required police attention, said Wright. Ten people were arrested that night, most for being drunk in public, the sergeant explained. Other reports were for a domestic assault and uttering threats.

BC Assessment notices being sent out this week to local homeowners Property values in Mission dipped slightly compared to the rest of the Fraser Valley, according to BC Assessment. Single-family detached homes, on average, were unchanged from last year’s assessed value of $338,000, however, apartment values dropped from $175,000 in 2013 to $171,000 in 2014, while the value of a townhouse dipped to $198,000 from $200,000. Property owners will be receiving their assessment notices in the mail in the next few days. “Most homes in the Fraser Valley are remaining stable in value compared to last year’s assessment roll,” said Raj Sandhu, deputy assessor. “Most homeowners in the Fraser Valley will see modest

Vaccinations are still important

Recent reports of death and illness stemming from the start of the influenza season underlines the importance of vaccinations. The most severe cases so far have been in Alberta, where health officials estimate the virus has killed 10 people. In B.C., while the numbers are not as high, Fraser Health reports 30 people in hospital, all suspected of having the H1N1 strain of the flu. One person has died, but it is not confirmed if H1N1 is to blame. To many, H1N1 is a familiar name. They remember the widespread concern when it was first identified as the “swine flu” in 2009. They also remember that despite dire warnings of an impending pandemic, the virus passed without much damage. For health officials, that success was a direct result of the intensive vaccination efforts made worldwide. To skeptics, however, it was just another sign of unwarranted alarm and manufactured panic. Indeed, it is easy to under-appreciate the flu threat. After all, who hasn’t contracted the virus at some point? For many it’s simply part of winter and nothing

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

worse than a nasty cold. What they forget is the fact that influenza is not some static disease. It is constantly changing to undermine the defences we build. If successful, the consequences can be devastating. In 1918 the most deadly conflict the world had ever seen was nearing its bloody end. But as tragic as the First World War was, more people died in the flu pandemic that struck that year than in the entire war. Estimates put the global death toll at between 50 million and 100 million people. In Canada, the disease claimed 50,000 lives – many of them young and in their prime of life. Many would like to think that the scale of that pandemic is ancient history. But the fact is the only thing preventing its resurgence are the actions we take to contain an outbreak. We have the tools at our disposal to reduce the risk. But it’s up to us to use them. For more information about influenza and vaccination clinics, see immunizebc. ca. – Black Press

Another year of enviro-wars begins Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views VICTORIA – The new year lurched to life with a round of shouting about the environment, as our post-industrial, post-literate urban society grapples with conflicting claims of impending doom. The release of a group of Greenpeace protesters from a Russian prison was welcomed by TV news networks desperate to fill the holiday dead zone. Our intrepid Canadian pair got to describe over and over their bid to hang a strongly worded banner from a Russian offshore oil platform, and their horror when security forces boarded their vessel from helicopters and seized it. In all the fawning interviews, I kept waiting for two questions to be asked. What did they think Vladimir Putin’s regime would do? And what was the point? How is disrupting one oil platform for an hour going to save the planet?

The Greenpeace “activists” claimed this was the first oil platform to operate above the Arctic Circle. So it was a line in the snow, which I’m sure impressed Putin as he ramps up his territorial claim to include the North Pole. Meanwhile at the South Pole, TV anchors remained carefully sombre as they reported numerous bids to rescue a scientific vessel trapped in thick ice. No quips about the predictive abilities of climate scientists please! In fact this ill-fated voyage was a re-enactment of Sir Douglas Mawson’s 1913 expedition, with pro-global warming news outlets BBC and The Guardian aboard to capture the melting wrought by a century of industrial expansion. The rescue efforts (from a Russian ship by Chinese helicopters) also disrupted an Australian icebreaker’s supply trip for one of the real scientific expeditions working in Antarctica. Skeptics had great fun with the Antarctic debacle, as they did earlier with the resurgence of Arctic ice that trapped climate tourists. As is normal in the Internet age, the climate debate has split into two fanatical factions, each of which promotes the most extreme examples it can find to prop up

its version of truth. They call each other “warmists” and “deniers” among other pithy names. Greenpeace is now known in B.C. as part

How is disputing one oil platform going to save the planet? of our Team America anti-tar sands brigade. They got off to a good start in 2014 by selectively seizing on reports of a new study of mercury contamination in northern Alberta. A “bullseye” of this dreaded neurotoxin has been drawn around oilsands operations by measuring traces in snow. The study by Environment Canada scientists isn’t published yet, but Postmedia News reported on a presentation in November by the researchers. “The federal scientists stress the mercury loadings around the oilsands are low com-

pared to the contamination seen in many parts of North America including southern Ontario and southern Quebec,” the news report states. This is like the study of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution in northern Alberta lakes that was twisted into propaganda and fed to the news media last year. This is another group of neurotoxins that are far more concentrated in urban areas than around remote industry. Consumption, rather than production of coal, diesel and other fuels produces the vast majority of these emissions. I look forward to the study of their effects around Lost Lagoon and Burnaby Lake. Of course safe levels of these materials have been set by Health Canada. You’re more likely to get significant exposure to mercury from a broken fluorescent lamp or the mercury amalgam in your old tooth fillings than you are from feeding ducks at the lake, although you might get a whiff of PAH when you gas up the car or board the bus. Make Valley pay into TransLink: Mayor Jeff Nagel BLACK PRESS

One Metro Vancouver mayor says Fraser Valley residents should be forced to make some contribution to TransLink because they also benefit from Metro’s transit system. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin suggested a fuel tax of a few cents per litre imposed in the Fraser Valley would be one way for that region to pay an appropriate amount in the name of fairness. “I think they’re getting a bit of a free ride,” Daykin said, citing the ability of residents there to ride the West Coast Express commuter train to downtown Vancouver from Mission, or to drive to one of TransLink’s park-and-rides that connect to SkyTrain. Mission contributes $770,000 per year to support West Coast Express service, in recognition of the station there, but other Fraser Valley communities pay nothing. Daykin said licence plate checks of vehicles at the West Coast Express parking lot in Mission have found 30 to 40 per cent belong to Abbotsford residents. Despite Mission’s contribution, service on the Mission-Haney WCE leg is heavily subsidized by TransLink, which pegs its net cost at $1 to $2 million. Daykin also pointed to the heavily used express bus over the Port Mann Bridge from the Carvolth parkand-ride in northwest Langley to SkyTrain in New Westminster. “I wonder how many from up the Valley drive there, park their car and hop on the bus

and have access to all the transit system? It’s hard to believe it’s all Langley people.” This month’s doubling of Port Mann Bridge tolls to $3 for most drivers may spur even more Fraser Valley motorists to park and ride transit instead, he added. Metro Vancouver households pay hefty amounts to TransLink regardless of whether they use transit. TransLink gets $235 per year in property tax from the average Metro home as well as 17 cents for every litre of gas sold within the region. Fares generate the biggest piece of the $1.45-billion budget. Any payment from Valley communities would be very modest, Daykin said, and would not go far to raising the extra billions of dollars TransLink needs to expand service. “It’s not going to be tens of millions of dollars,” he said. “I’m not delusional. But there should be an acknowledgment that there’s a benefit of our system in Metro to the Valley.” Daykin said he recently made that pitch to Transportation Minister Todd Stone, but got a “cool” response. Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) board chair Sharon Gaetz said there’s no justification. The Chilliwack mayor said studies show few people – about 10 per cent of trips by locals – leave the FVRD to shop, work or play in Metro, and most of them go only to Surrey or Langley. “Given the small numbers it wouldn’t be reasonable to have our taxes go to support

that,” Gaetz said. She also called it an “apples and oranges” comparison because of the way TransLink was created in 1999. Metro taxpayers were absolved of the requirement to pay tax to support hospital capital projects in return for them taking responsibility for regional transit costs.

Patient Testimonial

Ten years ago, I decided to have a dental implant rather than a bridge. Bridges can be hard to clean and can break down over time. I made an appointment with Dr. Lui and found the implant procedure virtually painless. My dental implant was problem free so, five years later, I had another implant placed by Dr. Lui. I have no discomfort, I can eat anything and the implants are easy to brush - just like normal teeth! I have complete confidence in Dr. Lui. His rates are fair and I know he keeps up-to-date with the latest technology and equipment. I highly recommend Dr. Lui to anyone considering having tooth replacement with a dental implant. PRAYING IS GOOD FOR THE SOUL

Praying is good for the soul and therapeutic for our personal well-being. Developing a prayer life helps give us the grace to accept things in this life as they are, and the hope of God’s mercy toward us in the next. Each day we should thank our Lord for all the days of life He has given us. We should realize that, apart from God, everything else is of little value. If all the sufferings and joys of our past draw us closer to our Father in Heaven, they were of immeasurable value. Praying for the needs of others as well as praying for our own personal desires is important in our prayer life. Intercessory prayer for our loved ones and friends is not only favored by God, it also helps to make us mindful of the needs of others. We have a wonderful God and although we are not always able to understand His decisions and methods, we know He loves us and wants only the best for us.direction, and firm resolve as we cross the threshold into the New Year.

Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. ~K.J.V. John 16:24~

Balancing your health Annual health fair takes place Jan. 11 at Mission Leisure Centre Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

If one of your resolutions this year is to improve your health, the health fair, organized by the District of Mission and Fraser Health, is a good place to start. The Back to Health … for Good event takes place on Jan. 11 from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Leisure Centre. This year’s theme is balancing wellness. “Up until now, we’ve focused on one area each time, like physical health or mental health,” said Tracey Takahashi, one of the organizers on the planning committee. “This year we’ve decided to incorporate everything.” Balancing a person’s wellness includes physical, spiritual, mental, social and emotional health. There are 41 exhibitors ready to help improve your health one way or another. Come and learn about services available in the community, attend an interactive presentation, or try a new activity, encouraged Takahashi. Last year’s event featured Olympic swimmer Brent Hayden as a keynote speaker, but this year there will be several featured presentations instead in room 4B, just off of the main lobby. • The Importance of Values, Self Awareness and Choices, on Our Wellness runs from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. with Jenn Cusick. This workshop will focus on your values and the importance of stopping to assess your emotional inventory on a regular basis. • Energizing your Goals with Jennifer Quick runs from 2 to 3 p.m. Learn to empower your goals with your mental, emotional and physical energies. The fair is open to

everyone and there is no charge for admission. Free activities throughout the day include a flu clinic, hearing screenings, and access to the swimming pool, ice rink, and weight room. The BC Winter Games committee will also be there to offer information about the upcoming event and register volunteers. For more information about the Back to Health … for Good fair, visit www.mission.ca.

Mission’s Dunbar savours chance to compete in TV poker tourney

Participating in the NHL Alumni Charity Poker Tournament is an experience Michael Dunbar will never forget, for a couple of reasons. First, the obvious – the 38-yearold Mission resident had the opportunity to rub elbows with a collection of famous poker pros and hockey players at the madefor-TV event, which taped in Toronto in July and is currently airing on Sportsnet, Sportsnet360 and SportsnetOne. From the poker world, superstars like Daniel Negreanu, Johnathan Duhamel and Vanessa Rousso were in attendance, joined by NHLers past and present including Theo Fleury, Denis Savard, Pat LaFontaine and Phil Kessel. But for Dunbar, the event held

added significance. Each participant chose a charity that they were playing for, and Dunbar picked the Canadian Cancer Society in honour of his father Paul, who was battling liver and bowel cancer at the time of the taping. Tourney players were only slated to be in Toronto for three days, but the producers allowed Dunbar, a Sarnia, Ont. native, to delay his flight back to B.C. by a week in order to visit his dad. “That was the last time I saw him alive,” said Dunbar, noting that his father passed away in November. “He was on my heart when I played [the poker tournament].” Dunbar qualified for the event by surviving a series of freeroll tournaments on the online poker site Pokerstars, and was subsequently selected after submitting an audition video.

“I had my kids around the poker table with me and my wife was filming, and I basically said I was coming down there to kick their butts and they’d all better watch out,” Dunbar said with a chuckle. “I just went with some over-the-top aggression there.” The tournament itself didn’t go quite as well as Dunbar might have envisioned. His six-player starting table also included Rousso, LaFontaine, Savard, Matthew Barnaby and Darcy Tucker, with the top two advancing to the final table. Dunbar finished sixth, losing the last of his chips with ace-six offsuit. Nevertheless, he earned $2,500 for the Canadian Cancer Society. “The hand I went out on was my best hand I picked up in three hours of playing cards,” he said. “I’ve never been that card-dead in my life.

Looks Toyota has always been a logical purchase, based on reliability and durability but now its designs too are capturing buyers with a visual, desirable esthetic. The 2014 edition is 7.5cm longer (mostly in the rear seat and cargo area), 1.5cm wider and 3cm lower. The stance is wide and lower, making more of a visual impact. Combine this with a large grille borrowed from the Tundra pickup truck and the Highlander has a very rugged, yet polished, look that

The cup holder is large and the centre armrest has a massive storage area inside; this is thanks to the removal of the stowaway seat that used to hide under the centre armrest. Now in the second row of seats there are three permanent seats or two captain’s chairs in the top Limited model. The previous hideaway idea was simple but not so comfortable. The biggest change takes place in the third row of seats, where three people can sit rather than just two. In addition,

there is 100L of cargo space behind the third row of seats offering much better functionality. It has all the interior amenities that one expects in a modern three-row crossover, even a system that allows the driver’s voice to be amplified through the stereo for easier conversations with passengers in the very back, but there seems to be a lack of sophistication compared to its competition. Drive The previous Highlander was available with a 4-cylinder engine and front wheel drive (FWD). It’s with a standard 3.5L V6 with 270hp, matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission, also with FWD. The starting price stays at $31,680; factoring in the backup camera there is good value here. When it arrives later this month, the base LE with all wheel drive (AWD) starts at $34,180. I think most people will opt for the LE with convenience package that includes 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, three-zone climate control, satellite radio and leather steering wheel to name a few. This brings the price up to $34,480 for the FWD and $36,980 for the AWD. On the road, the AWD system sends power to just the front wheels as often as possible with only 10 per cent of the torque shifting when cornering. The system has the ability to shift or lock up to 50 per cent of the power for better traction but limiting it to times

when it is truly needed helps improve fuel economy. The other part of the fuel economy story is the all-new 6-speed automatic. The official fuel rating for the most popular AWD model is 11.5L/100km in the city and 8.2L on the highway, which is almost a full litre improvement in combined highway/city economy over the 2013 model. The rear suspension has been modified for a slightly more dynamic drive and improved ride. The steering is rather light and vague but the buyers of this type of product will appreciate the ease of use.

OF THE WEEK:

Verdict The Highlander is a functional vehicle for young buyers with kids and friends that need to get to practice and carry all the sports equipment that goes with it. Overall, a very good family crossover that will get the job done every day.

Safety Tip:

Power: 3.5L V5 with 270hp Fill-up: 11.5L/8.2L/100km (city/highway AWD) Sticker price: $31,680-$45,100

QUESTION OF THE WEEK!

Go to drivewayBC.ca to submit your answer.

With challenging road conditions across the province, January is always one of the highest months for crashes in B.C. Take some small steps to prepare your vehicle for the conditions, such as checking your tire pressure – tires deflate more quickly in cold weather – and top up your vehicle’s anti-freeze, windshield washer fluid, and gas.

The highs and lows of driving on a German Autobahn Much motoring mythology surrounds Germany’s speed limitless autobahns. Many readers who favour an increase in posted limits on our freeways point to the superbly engineered German highways as the example to follow. The latest round of praise follows the recent Insights West poll conducted for Black Press that found 37 per cent back increased limits on routes such as the Coquihalla Highway. And doubtless BC Transportation Minister Todd Stone will hear the same in his review of highway speed limits during the eight regional public forums being held this month. Hate to be a party pooper but today’s autobahns really don’t live up to their past reputation. They are excellent to drive but if you expect to cruise along at 250 km/h for the duration of

which, while it can’t be enforced, if you disobey it and are involved in a collision it may cost you. Say what? – The advisory speed limit under this “rule” is 130 km/h, referred to in German as the Richtgeschwindigkeit. Smash up at a higher speed and you could be found partially responsible due to “increased operating danger”. Within an hour, I was comfortable with the car and itching to let it go. It seemed to be tugging to the right at one point but that was near the car’s birthplace at Ingolstadt. On the other hand, it could have been a crosswind. You can only pass another car in the left lane. The right lane is for slower vehicles so you risk a ticket if you pass on the right at any speed. That threat didn’t seem to worry too many in the approaches to the various urban areas along the way. As the traffic thinned, I wound up the A6 to 200 km/h for less than a minute and shortly after I managed to hit 220 km/h but that

lasted all of 20 seconds. I managed to do 180 km/h for about three minutes before slowing to 140 for a sustained period of around 20 minutes. Europe is full and nowhere is that more evident than on the roads. I found 120 km/h was more easily achieved for most of the journey and seemed to

be more typical a speed for most. From Munich city limits to Berlin it took me around 5 hours 30 minutes, which means I averaged about 105 km/h. Pretty good but not the 200 km/h many think you can do. There’s the reality check: Generally, I agree that

Secrets of the Chevrolet Camaro . . . it’s a Canuck! Rob Sass

One of North America’s favorite pony cars, the Camaro has an interesting past with more than a few buried facts and secrets hiding just below the radar. Here are five of my favorites: • The Camaro was almost called the Panther — It took a while for Chevrolet to come up with a final name for the Camaro. For quite some time it was referred to internally as the Chevrolet Panther. In end, Chevy’s preference for names beginning with a “C” won out, and the Panther

name died as part of an elaborate PR campaign. • The Camaro was actually Canadian — like William Shatner and Michael J. Fox, the seemingly All-American Camaro was actually stealth Canadian. From 1993-2002, the Camaro and its twin, the Pontiac Firebird, were built in St. Thérèse, Quebec, a Montreal suburb. • “Camaro” means nothing — The name was actually a contrived moniker, much like “Camry” and “Corolla.” Although some claim that it is French slang for “friend,” neither the GM product people are

aware of this. • “Outpaced” the Mustang — Although the Camaro came 2½ years after the Mustang and was often outsold by the Mustang, it has a healthy lead in the Indianapolis 500. The Camaro has been the official pace car at Indy six times, versus just three for the Mustang. Only the Corvette (12) has paced more 500s than the Camaro. • Current Base V-6 puts V-8s of old to shame — Amazing as it may seem, the 2013 base six-cylinder engine, at 323 hp, puts out more ponies than the most powerful

small-block V-8 in the original car (295 hp). In fact, it probably makes nearly as much power as the fiercest big block V-8 of 1967, the 396 cubic inch, 375 hp. In modern “net horsepower” (measured with mufflers and accessories hooked up), the new six and the old big-block V-8 are probably just about even. Hagerty’s employees just recently finished a full restoration of a 1969 Camaro SS. 2014 Infiniti QX70 puts safety above everything else Its distinctive Infiniti look to it should attract many buyers. The projector-style headlights flow with the body lines and the fog lights look like they actually belong rather than appear an afterthought as is

Ian Harwood

The Infiniti QX70 may be a looker but its range of safety equipment is its most attractive feature.

Looks:

the case in some of its competitors. The side body lines almost give the appearance of waves moving up the vehicle. LED rear brake lights and center high-mounted stoplight sit atop the rear

power lift-gate. Chrome accents around the windows give it a sense of elegance. The functional side vents on the rear of the front fenders give it a European sporty look and reduce front end tilt

as they are well positioned. I like the navigation screen with 3D mapping and the around view monitor that gives you a bird’s eye view of the vehicle. An eight-way power driver’s

seat with adjustable lumbar support, six-way power front passenger’s seat, 60/40 split folding rear seats that individually fold flat, make for comfort. The audio system is a Bose 11 speaker with two subwoofers, AM/FM/CD with MP3 playback capability and has a speed sensitive volume control. Color monitors are built in to headrests so rear passengers can enjoy movies or play their favorite games. There is an advanced climate control system that continuously cleans the cabin and automatically shuts off the outside air vents when exhaust fumes are detected.

A 3.7 litre, 24 valve V6 engine with 325 horsepower and 248 foot pounds of torque power this vehicle. The 7 speed automatic transmission is an electronically continuously variable (CVT) with manual shift capabilities, that features downshift rev matching technology.

Roadworthy: Excellent handling to this vehicle, steering was quick and responsive, and body roll was at a minimum. Even though the engine was more than adequate providing plenty of power, the CVT transmission was continuing to make adjustments and I found at times sudden bursts of power followed by a hard up shift. Definitely not something I expected with this type of luxury.

Warranty support: 48 month/ 100,000 km

Verdict: I was excited to drive this vehicle after reading some of the press releases, but was disappointed on the size of the interior space and performance. The safety features of this vehicle are incredible and I think most people would feel very safe driving it.

Cars that loom large in the rearview mirror My review of 2013 might offer you some thoughts to ponder for your 2014. I tried to count how many cars I tested last year. I tried. However, I could only come up

Alexandra Straub

Before looking ahead with hope for a promising new year, indulge me while I check my rearview mirror.

with an approximate figure. And it comes in at around 102. That’s a lot of vehicles. And it doesn’t even include motorcycles, ATVs, ROVs and anything else that you

could consider some sort or transportation or recreational vehicle. So, within that lot, you have to either be pretty good or pretty bad to stand out.

Though, there were a few surprises along the way that made the list. Here are the cars that stuck with me and still leave me wanting more (or less).

Making the top of my list as the most memorable car that I drove is not what you’d expect. It’s the 2013 Nissan NV200 Cargo Van. – Say what?

Without taking up too much space, I fell in love with its utility, its practicality and its ability to be a workhorse, even though it only has 131 horsepower. In the city, it fit in underground parking lots and surprisingly had pep. Visibility is non-existent out the rear and there was no vanity mirror, but it was just an admirable vehicle to drive. And it even fits a motorcycle inside. I just love it. The 2014 Ford Fiesta ST makes the list because, in all the years that I’ve been testing vehicles, I have never been as tempted to impulse buy a car. For under $25K you get a firecracker of a car, a manual transmission, 197 horsepower and an amazing chassis setup. For an everyday driver and a car you could put on the track, it’s just stellar. The smile on your face when driving is included in the price tag. The least bang for your buck, that I tested, comes with the 2013 BMW 320i xDrive. At $46,500, that’s pretty steep for a car that doesn’t even have a backup camera or streaming Bluetooth audio. Not to mention, it comes with a humble 181 horsepower engine. That said, it’s a BMW, therefore has some nice touches to it. Put it in Sport mode, tinker with the throttle and you’ll instantly become a happier person. My favourite convertible of the year goes to the Bentley Continental GT Speed drop top. It’s not hard to see why. Yes, I could have opted for the Porsche Boxster S (it came so close and is hundreds of thousands of dollars cheaper,) but I hand the title to the Brits because I love the craftsmanship. It’s always a fabulous time when I can be behind the wheel of a racecar. I had two opportunities. The first came when I participated in the Bridgestone Racing Academy at the Driver Development Track at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Then, I drove a track ready vehicle that was super fast and zero emissions. Nissan’s world renowned LEAF was available for laps at the manufacturer’s international event called Nissan 360. But this one was a little more special. It was the LEAF NISMO RC (RC stands for race car) and had been on tracks around the world. It was lightening fast a very memorable experience. And while I loved most of all the cars I drove in 2013, adding the 2014 VW Touareg TDI to the family was certainly a highlight of my year. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

At last year’s Burton Global Series (BEGS), the PirateArtCrew snowboard artists unveiled an art installation featuring the MINI Countryman. This year Urban Art Illustrator Andreas Preis takes up the challenge to work his magic on a MINI Paceman. Preis is known for his striking designs as displayed, for example, on skateboards and snowboards. Using his expressive illustrative skills, the artist has taken the MINI Paceman and turned it into a wild MINI Paceman SNOW BEAST in time for the start of the competitive event next week.

It was a Christmas Miracle: that’s all I can put it down to. Pulled up behind a new sport-ute at a busyy intersection, just a second before the light changed green. en. And predictably that’s when the driver put on his left eft turn signal. Then to my absolute amazement, he did exactly xactly what he was supposed to do after failing to signal al at the appropriate time. He drove across the intersection rsection and took the next left! There was a police car behind me so perhaps ps the errant driver feared a $121 ticket and two penaltyy points on his license. Not likely. What drives-u-crazy? kmorgan@blackpress.ca n@blackpress.ca

OBITUARIES

DYKSTRA

WEISS

Geoff

Adolph Horst (Alf) Weiss, age 73, passed away on January 3rd, 2014 at his home in Cloverdale, BC of natural causes. Alf was born in Siegfriedsdorf, Germany on October 3, 1940 to Justus and Helena (Nee Müller) Weiss. In 1945, his family fled from the advancing Russian army, then immigrated to Canada via the MV Beaverbrae in 1948. They settled in Winnipeg. Alf took up the sheet metal trade, and built thousands of ducts that have helped warm tens of thousands of people. Alf moved to Vancouver in 1968, where he met Martha Martens, the love of his life. They were married 10 months later on September 13, 1969. Alf’s great loves were his family (especially his grandchildren), walking, bird-watching, fixing things, journaling, and eating good bread with good jam. Alf served for many years with Christian Service Brigade and as a shepherding elder at Sevenoaks Alliance

Geoffrey Tyson Dykstra, late of Whittier, Caildornia, went Home to be with Jesus on January 4, 2014, at 34 years of age after an eight month struggle with leukaemia. Geoff is survived by wife, Leah and their five children: Abigael, Keely, Silas, Evangelyn, and Phinehas. He is also survived by parents, Frank and Grace Dykstra and sisters Catherine (Brad) and Erica (Dallin), all of Abbotsford, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and his Beppe Teyema. Geoff was born in Abbotsford in 1979 and attended Abbotsford Christian School graduating in 1997. He then attended Biola University in La Mirada, California, graduating in 2005 with a Degree in Organizational Leadership. He worked at and managed the Duplicating Centre at Biola University during his studies. After completing his degree, Geoff still wanted to pursue his dream of working in the medical profession and so in 2006, Geoff enrolled in the nursing program at Biola University, completed his nursing degree in 2010 and worked with the Los Angeles County Public Health Centre in Whittier. In April of 2013, Geoff became ill and on April 30 was diagnosed with AL leukaemia. Geoff spent his remaining days initially at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier and later at the UCLA Medical Center in Westwood. His story of this time along with his and Leah’s testimony of their unwavering faith in their Savior, Jesus Christ, can be found at www.caring bridge.org/visit/geoffdykstra. The family thanks all the medical caregivers at both facilities for all their effort made to prolong Geoff’s life beyond his stem cell transplant in September. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 11, 2014, 10:30 AM, at Grace Evangelical Free Church in La Mirada, California with live stream of that service in Abbotsford, at Gateway Community Christian Reformed Church.
