The president of Compliance Energy says the company will re-submit its application for the Raven coal mine project by the end of March. In May of 2013, the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) rejected the application for the proposed mine near Buckley Bay, less than 50 kilomteres from downtown Qualicum Beach, saying “the application does not contain the required information and (the EAO) has decided not to accept the application for detailed review.” After that rejection, Compliance officials said they planned to re-submit the application within a couple of months. On Tuesday, Compliance CEO Stephen Ellis said that submission will be made by “the end of the first quarter” of 2104. “It (getting the application re-submitted) is slower than I would have anticipated,” Ellis told The NEWS. “But getting all the information required by the government has taken some time.” A large part of that process has been consultation with First Nations. Ellis said the company has now consulted 18 of the 20 groups the EAO required. “There’s no real end to that consultation,” said Ellis. “You carry on with that.” On its website (www.theravenproject.ca), the company says it expects to hire up to 200 workers during construction and create up to 350 full-time jobs. The underground operation would be centred about five kilometres west of the Buckley Bay ferry terminal and the coal would be stored and shipped out of Port Alberni. See OPPONENT, page A7

The conversations surrounding the possible closure, amalgamation or reconfiguration of local schools is coming to a head. There are two more public facility review meetings within the next couple of weeks where information will be gathered to contribute to a draft report to be presented to the school board on Thursday, Jan. 23 by acting superintendent Rollie Koop. Public meetings regarding district facilities have been going on for the past few months.

The final facility review report will be presented to the board on Jan. 28, at which time trustees will vote on a motion to act on the recommendations. The review is being done to assist the local school board in dealing with a $3.4 million budget deficit over the next five years, a substantial underutilization of district schools, and a declining enrolment that isn’t expected to reverse for at least 10 years. If the school board votes to accept recommendations, a 90-day public consultation period will begin. The next public meeting regard-

ing facilities will be tonight, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. at Oceanside Middle School. This is part of the Toward a Future for Schools Conversation series. The next one will be a public meeting at Springwood Middle School on Wednesday. Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. The Jan. 23 presentation of the draft report will take place at the Parksville Civic and Technology Centre in The Forum at 7 p.m. and the Jan. 28 final report will be presented at the same place during a regular school board meeting. Correction — IRP issued to van driver

A caption under a photo of an upside-down vehicle we published on page A7 of the Jan. 7 edition included some erroneous information. We apologize for the error and what follows below is the corrected version, as supplied by the Oceanside RCMP. On Monday at 11 a.m., the Parksville Volunteer Fire Department, B.C. Ambulance Services and the Oceanside RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 19A in front of the Tim Horton’s restaurant. A Dodge van being driven by a 56-year-old Parksville man pulled out of the Tim Horton’s parking lot directly in front of a Chevrolet being driven by a 39-year-old Parksville, man who was travelling south on the highway. The van travelled across the highway after the impact and rolled on its roof, coming to a final rest in a parking lot. The driver of the van and his female passenger, a 65-year-old Parksville woman, had minor injuries and were transported by ambulance to Nanaimo General Hospital. The van driver showed signs of alcohol impairment and refused an RCMP officer’s demand for a breath sample. This resulted in the driver receiving an Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition (IRP) and a subsequent vehicle impoundment. The driver of the car was uninjured in the collision. — NEWS Staff

Incandescent light bulbs are still available in many local stores, but not for long. A long discussed federal ban on inefficient light bulbs went into effect across the country Jan. 1, favouring more efficient and expensive alternatives like light emitting diodes (LED) or compact fluorescent (CFL). The ban on incandescent, or standard indoor bulbs, had been proposed by the federal government in 2007 and was set to start in 2012 but was postponed due to consumer concerns

about cost and disposal. Partly due to those concerns halogen bulbs will be exempt from the ban for now, but rules or systems to recycle the toxic mercury in CFL bulbs is still in the works. While fluorescent bulbs contain about five milligrams of mercury — less than in a watch battery, according to Natural Resources Canada — Health Canada recommends that items containing mercury be treated as hazardous waste. The phase out of incandescent bulbs starts now with 75 and 100-watt bulbs, with 40- and 60-watt versions to follow at the end of the year. The bulbs can still be shipped and sold, as long as they were produced before the phase-out date.

Local businesses and residents rallied to help the family of Ashley Coldwell, the six-year-old who died suddenly Christmas Day. The Vancouver Canucks donated jerseys so people could wear the colours of Ashley’s favourite team at the service on Wednesday at Yates Funeral Home in Parksville CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com

While Parksville Qualicum Beach residents mourn the death of sixyear-old Ashley, his grieving aunt, Rebecca Coldwell, said her family is taken aback by the “outstanding” show of community support. Ashley died late Christmas night. He mentioned having a headache before his mother, Becky Morton, tucked him into bed at his grandmother’s Nanaimo home. He said it was “the best Christmas ever.” An hour later, a parents worst nightmare became a reality. Morton found her son out cold. In an effort to honor the life of a young Canucks fan, family and friends dressed in Canucks jerseys Wednesday afternoon in Parksville to celebrate the life of six-year-old Ashley Coldwell, who died Christmas Day.

And support is coming in from all directions, including the Lower Mainland. “Ashley was an avid Canucks fan,” explained Coldwell, fighting back tears. “So we all decided to wear Canucks jerseys for the service to honor him.” However, Coldwell said Ashley’s grandparents had a nearly impossible time finding jerseys, as most stores were sold out after the busy Christmas season. The grandparents trolled the internet, asked collectors and visited stores for two days straight to no avail. As a last resort, Ashely’s grandmother sent a Facebook message through the Ca-

nucks fan page explaining their story and attaching a photo of Ashley at the Canucks fan zone in downtown Vancouver, face painted with blue stripes. Coldwell said a few days later, Ashley’s grandparents received an e-mail from Wynn Moody, the manager of sales and service for Canucks Sports and Entertainment, which read: “Just wanted you to know that the jerseys will be FedEx’ed to you tomorrow morning. You should receive it within two business days. We were so touched by your e-mail and as soon as I opened the photo, I broke into tears. I recognized Ashley and his father. I remember seeing them in the store

and admiring his team color whiskers. My heart goes out to your family. Our team is so lucky to have your support. Please let us take care of these jerseys. They will come to you at no charge. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of Ashley’s celebration of life. I hope that this will help you honor his memory. Please let me know if there is anything else that we can help with. Our deepest condolences for your loss.” The celebration of life for Ashley Coldwell was held Wednesday at Yates Funeral Service. Family and friends wore Canucks jerseys to honor of one of their greatest fans, whose life was taken far too early.

lessons from dad

The not-so-handy man on building Recalling tales of construction and tough love from my father I hate sitcoms where stupid dads constantly mess up. My father wasn’t like that. He was an expert at fixing things around the house. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t do. When my brother Jay turned nine he started helping. Jay was a natural with hammers, saws and drills. Within a few years he got to use all of dad’s power tools. When I reached my ninth birthday I figured it would be my turn. I’d be another Mr. Fixit. Dad had different ideas. “Marsha, that boy is a complete klutz. No way that he’s helping me,” he said. “But Hank, he wants to help,” my mother replied, in my defense. “Okay, but he’s not touching any of my tools,” he said. By ray smit The big day arrived and I presented myself ready for duty. Dad and Jay were busy putting a new gate in the fence. There was a pile of 2x4’s, fence posts, screws, extension cords and shiny new tools sitting on the patio. That’s where Jay and dad would be working. About 20 feet away there was another pile. Dad took me over there. “Here’s something for you to work with,” he said. “How come my hammer doesn’t have a handle?” I asked. “You have to walk before you run,” he said. I surveyed my construction cache only to find that it contained just one small warped piece of wood, three badly bent rusty nails, a tiny plastic coping saw for ages six and up and the aforementioned hammer sans handle. “But Dad, what am I supposed to do with this?” I asked. “Build a birdhouse. When that’s done you can help Jay and I.” Needless to say even Mr. Fixit couldn’t have done that. And he was on the CBC! I pretty much gave up on construction spending my time as dad’s gofer. The next summer Jay took pity on me and said, “Let’s build a garden

shed. It’ll be a big surprise for mom. And I’ll let you help. You can nail the plywood on to the runners when we install the floor.” Jay started the foundation behind a brick wall under a willow tree at the very back of the yard so dad wouldn’t see it. We made a great start when on Saturday afternoon, to our horror, our elderly neighbor Mr. Chambers dropped by. If there were Olympic medals for meddling he’d have won the gold. No doubt he was curious about the hammering he heard when dad was at work. He walked into the backyard and then headed straight for the willow tree with dad, Jay and I in tow. He leaned over the brick wall and said, “Yes sir, I knew you boys were building something back here. Of course, there’s an art to building. I can tell you stories.” He did tell us stories — lots of them. Ad nauseam. Even the dog slunk away. But the cat was out of the bag. After Mr. Chambers left, dad inspected Jay’s work. “Not bad. But who nailed down the floor. It’s terrible,” he commented. Jay and I said nothing but everyone knew the answer. So Jay and Dad finished the job and I got demoted back to gofer. Over the years I have managed to learn a little bit about construction. I’m proud to say that I can hammer a nail reasonably straight, install tiles and even do pretty good drywall. But I’m still a technical incompetent. A few years back I moved into an old house and was flummoxed by the plumbing. By the time Jay popped over to have a look, I’d already spent an hour looking under the kitchen sink. “Jay, I think my plumbing is rusty and old!” “Been talking to your urologist again?” he replied with a grin. “They have pills for that now.” “Shut up,” I replied cleverly. I guess that’s why I hate family sitcoms. Invariably the stupid dad does a home repair and makes a mess and everyone laughs. Hockey will bring us together

ur new favourite guy, at least this week, is Jamie Benn, our very own member of the Canadian men’s Olympic hockey team. OK, he’s from Victoria, but close enough. Dan Hamhuis of Smithers, Penticton’s Duncan Keith, Shea Weber of Sicamous and the pride of Anahim Lake, Carey Price, are near the top of our list, too. There are so many Olympics haters out there, but we ask for a pass today from them, despite their hard-to-argue-against points related to the ridiculous cost of staging an Olympics and how that money could be better spent. The men on our Olympic hockey team don’t need any money — they are all wealthy NHLers. And this is about hockey, our national passion, so spare us, at least for a day, the Bread Not Circuses argument. Lest you believe hockey is irrelevant or a trivial pursuit and unimportant to the grand scheme of things, we ask you to consider some numbers and how they show the togetherness of a nation, which can’t be a bad thing. More than 16.6 million people in this country watched the 2010 Olympic men’s hockey final, making it the most watched television broadcast in Canadian history. Even a regular season game a week ago — albeit outdoors in front of 105,000 spectators — drew an audience of 3.57 million viewers in Canada. David Suzuki could only dream of those kind of numbers, but in this country, that’s just the nature of things. Our men’s hockey team will be hard-pressed to repeat as gold medalists, with these Games in Russia on the bigger ice surface and our recent history of flops outside of North America. However, we like our chances. We will also be keeping tabs on the speed skating oval in Sochi, where the Canadian team has a Qualicum Beach connection — William Dutton. It just can’t be wrong to cheer for our athletes, these fellow British Columbians who have worked so hard since they were youngsters to reach this stage. Go Jamie Benn! Letters FeRRy Pay Vs. Mla Re: recent letter to the editor from Alberni-Pacific MLA Scott Fraser (‘Need ferry plan’). I find it interesting that Fraser insists on ferry fare increases being the result of “even higher corporate pay structures” while never telling us how much money this executive pay is costing BC Ferries. For fiscal 2013 “director and key executive compensation” amounted to $2 million. Dividing by total vehicles this works out to 26 cents per vehicle for the year. Dividing by total sailings it works out to $11 per sailing for 2013. If only we had a useful denominator with which we could divide Fraser’s own salary and platinum pension plan. Perhaps if we used letters to the editor as the metric we could get it down to mere thousands of dollars per letter? JaSon mooRE Parksville

Major Norman Hamelin of the Salvation Army met with the organizers of the Bethlehem Walk at the Baptist church Dec. 20. He was presented with a check for more than $19,000 that had been collected from the four-day event along with more than 1,500 pounds of food. “What an incredible powerful and positive way to share the true meaning of Christmas,” said Major Norm. The story told by the Bethlehem Walk volunteers brings hope and light into our fast-paced and sometimes dark world. It not only reaches those in and surrounding our district, but around the

The Parksville Beach Resort lays vacant, boarded up and derelict. This former thriving business is now a canker on the face of downtown. It is only a matter of time before the taggers with their bombs of spray paint defile the site with outrageous graffiti, or some mysterious spark ignites the tinder dry

buildings and razes the place to the ground. That it sits on prime beach front real estate is obvious. The owner needs to be encouraged by council to carry on with his intent to redevelop this space for the benefit of Parksville residents, not thrown stumbling blocks at every turn. Will 2014 be the year when city council makes the bold moves to get this once vital property back into being a solid contributor to the city tax base and a credit to the citizens of this fair city? We have been pressing Premier Christy Clark to take a consistent position on senate reform since before she was premier. I’m at a loss, however, to understand how Harding can credibly claim that we didn’t provide any examples of the ever-changing stance of the premier. What’s Better for Qualicum Beach?! another housing development, three kilometers from town with 100 expensive residential homes and 60 resort cottages?

or this… A natural, urban green space currently home to a diverse assortment of wildlife, dog-walkers, and small acreage farms, all of which will be lost forever!

In 2005 Pheasant Glen Golf Resort was given a zoning change, but THEY chose not to go forward with it - no one delayed or stopped them from building. It cost the Town of Qualicum Beach and Taxpayers a great deal of Time and Money. Now they’re back for yet another zoning change to build a high-end residential subdivision (if you’re to believe their financial projections), but first PGGR must change our Official Community Plan, the Growth Containment Boundary, the Regional Growth Strategy, and a binding Covenant they agreed to for Resort Housing only. PGGR’s plan for permanent expensive residences may provide shortterm wages, taxes and a new Club House, but long-term will not attract young families, will not compensate for increased infrastructure costs, nor will it help the local economy, as this project will not increase Tourism spending. It will dramatically increase vehicular traffic (it’s a 45 minute walk into town), water consumption, police & fire protection and will put additional pressure on our demographically-challenged health care system.

Using what we consider to be mean-spirited bullying tactics (some vociferous golf members with personal agendas) a biased survey, highpriced legal and planning advice; and pitting Town Councilors against one another), PGGR has not provided one complete or current Development, Environmental or Landscaping plan, yet they want the Town to spend more Time & Money for another Zoning Change, based on what we believe to be unsubstantiated financial projections and 2 conceptual drawings!?! Understandably most Golf Clubs are going through tough times, but what business isn’t? There are 7 Golf Courses in the area in which the industry norm is 1 for a population of 25,000. Notwithstanding the aging demographics, why is it incumbent upon Qualicum Beach Taxpayers to bail out PGGR on what we consider to be a bad business decision? Self-serving, you bet! Now it’s up to you to decide what’s best for our community --- maintaining our natural green space, water resources, established boundaries & growth strategy, or being forced into a high-end, costly and extremely disruptive sub-division?

On Jan. 13th tell Council you want to see the downtown core developed with affordable housing that appeals to younger families who’ll support KSS and the local merchants, not the senseless PGGR development.

Early on a snow-covered morning late in December, I went out for my usual Friday run with a friend and I found myself slipping and falling into a ditch on Qualicum Road, in extreme pain. My friend flagged down a car and a very nice guy offered to drive me home. There was no way I could walk, let alone run home. Back in the day, when my wife and I were racking up 40 years of combined ocean-going merchant marine service between us, New Zealand was known for having a human population of three million along with 70 million sheep. Presently their human population has risen to around 4.5 million, while the sheep population has declined to around 32 million. Still a whole lot of lamb chops, but we have recently wondered if a large number of those sheep have found their way to British Columbia, whose human population is coincidentally identical to New Zealand’s. Knowing the penchant that sheep and lambs have for blindly following the leader and for quietly being led to the slaughter, we now hear the constant bleating of two-legged B.C. sheep of a green-ish hue. The bleating is occurring in so many letters to the editor, in blogs and in social media, with nauseating and erroneous repetition about “inevitable oil spills from tank-

ers plying our pristine, wind-swept coastline”, or words to that effect. It only took a few environmentalists’ misperceptions about tanker safety to start the misinformation campaign ball rolling, and the aforementioned B.C. two-legged sheep simply flocked behind them. Would be nice if there were some facts to go along with the opinions of the two-legged bleaters; maybe they could start by considering another country with a population size comparable to B.C. That would be Norway, where the very prosperous capitalist welfare state has trillions of dollars in the largest reserve per capita in the world. About a third of the Nordic nation’s huge revenue comes from state involvement in a booming oil and gas industry, of course. Let’s hope B.C.’s silent majority, many of them readers of The NEWS, will become more vocal, and support the Northern Gateway and LNG pipeline proposals, before the poutine really hits the fan. pleasantly surprised by ohc

This last week, we unfortunately needed to make a visit to the new Oceanside Health Centre. Having heard negative reports, we were pleasantly surprised that any “kinks” they may have had, have been completed resolved. The service we received was courteous and very professional. Although we were processed within 15 minutes of our arrival, as our needs were not as urgent as others, we spent about two hours waiting to be treated. How relieved we were that they treated the very sick, most likely contagious, people first, thereby not risking their contaminating others as the waiting area was full.

disappointed in town staff Re: the new Qualicum Beach fire hall being built on land designated as park. As town engineer Bob Weir stated in the article on your front page Dec. 19: “we always knew we were going to use it for something.” My problem with that is this. If that was the case, wasn’t the developer misinformed about the town’s intentions at that time? There are several other issues with that statement. What if the developer does not want a fire hall near his development and had the impression that parkland would instead be a welcome addition to his development. How would the town react if a developer obtains land and a permit for a retirement home and builds a big box store instead? Then he offers to donate another piece of land for a future retirement home and call it fair game. I myself bought a property next door to the fire hall project thinking I’m the neighbour to park land. Now I’m looking at a cell phone tower, a concrete bunker and soon a fire hall as well. Some things are just not right and I am very disappointed with the way the town staff has handled this. In my personal view they mislead the developer, the people who bought the parcels, possibly the town council and certainly the public.

On Saturday, Jan. 18, members of the Mid Vancouver Island Habitat Enhancement Society (MVIHES) will be hosting a Stewardship Fair where professionals in fields such as fish monitoring, water quality, flow monitoring and channel condition, etc. will present ways in which the community can get involved in protecting the health of the Englishman River watershed. While the rest of Canada sits in a deep-freeze or is buried in snow, we here in the mid Island area have experienced a winter that many of our friends and relatives living on the other side of the Rockies can only dream about. Many of us see these mild and dry conditions as a blessing but really — we need to be concerned. The lack of rainfall during our normally wettest winter months will affect our natural systems that depend on this moisture for most of the year. This situation could add another impact on our watershed which has already experienced negative changes from human development that have altered the river‚s physical habitat conditions, the water flows, its chemistry and fish populations. How can we, the community, work together to protect this precious watershed?

The highs and lows of driving on a German Autobahn Much motoring mythology surrounds Germany’s speed limitless autobahns. Many readers who favour an increase in posted limits on our freeways point to the superbly engineered German highways as the example to follow. The latest round of praise follows the recent Insights West poll conducted for Black Press that found 37 per cent back increased limits on routes such as the Coquihalla Highway. And doubtless BC Transportation Minister Todd Stone will hear the same in his review of highway speed limits during the eight regional public forums being held this month. Hate to be a party pooper but today’s autobahns really don’t live up to their past reputation. They are excellent to drive but if you expect to cruise along at 250 km/h for the duration of a multi-hour journey you will be disappointed. In recent years, I’ve driven thousands of kilometres along high-speed freeways throughout Europe while attending launches for a

variety of high-powered cars. One of the most memorable trips I drove was the 585 kilometres between Munich and Berlin, which I covered in an Audi A6, with a 2.8-litre V6 generating 207 horsepower under the hood. Just like Vancouver, Munich is a thriving city and there’s congestion with a capital C even on the A9 autobahn. The queues continue even 30 kms outside of the city but it must be said that they move at a uniform speed of 100 km/h! To say there are no speed limits is inaccurate: I encountered city areas where the maximum was 120 km/h overnight between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. There are also restrictions in motorcycles, large trucks and cars towing trailers. What I find most interesting was the unwritten rule, which, while it can’t be enforced, if you disobey it and are involved in a collision it may cost you. Say what? – The advisory speed limit under this “rule” is 130 km/h, referred to in German as the Richtgeschwindigkeit. Smash up at

a higher speed and you could be found partially responsible due to “increased operating danger”. Within an hour, I was comfortable with the car and itching to let it go. It seemed to be tugging to the right at one point but that was near the car’s birthplace at Ingolstadt. On the other hand, it could have been a crosswind. You can only pass another car in the left lane. The right lane is for slower vehicles so you risk a ticket if you pass on the right at any speed. That threat didn’t seem to worry too many in the approaches to the various urban areas along the way. As the traffic thinned, I wound up the A6 to 200 km/h for less than a minute and shortly after I managed to hit 220 km/h but that lasted all of 20 seconds. I managed to do 180 km/h for about three minutes before slowing to 140 for a sustained period of around 20 minutes. Europe is full and nowhere is that more evident than on the roads. I found 120 km/h was more easily

limit, especially in the rural areas where drivers would likely be able to maintain the

The cabin seems large at first, but after climbing in and getting comfortable you realize it is not all that big. Access to the controls is easy as they are well positioned. I like the navigation screen with 3D mapping and the around view monitor that gives you a bird’s eye view of the vehicle. An eight-way power driver’s seat with adjustable lumbar support, six-way power front passenger’s seat, 60/40 split folding rear seats that individually fold flat, make for comfort. The audio system is a Bose 11 speaker with two subwoofers, AM/FM/CD with MP3 playback capability and has a speed sensitive volume control. Color monitors are built in to headrests so rear passengers can enjoy movies or play their favorite games. There is an advanced climate control

system that continuously cleans the cabin and automatically shuts off the outside air vents when exhaust fumes are detected.

Safety First: The QX70 includes dual stage front airbags with seatbelt and occupant sensors, driver and front passenger side impact supplement airbags, roof mounted curtain side impact airbags with rollover sensor for all row outboard occupant head protection. Intelligent brake assist system is a safety feature that continuously monitors and analyzes closing speeds to a vehicle ahead and provides warnings. If a collision is imminent, it will also apply the brakes. There is also a lane departure warning and prevention system.

Power: A 3.7 litre, 24 valve V6 engine with 325 horsepower and 248 foot pounds of torque power this vehicle. The 7 speed automatic transmission is an electronically continuously variable (CVT) with manual shift capabilities, that features

downshift rev matching technology.

Roadworthy: Excellent handling to this vehicle, steering was quick and responsive, and body roll was at a minimum. Even though the engine was more than adequate providing plenty of power, the CVT transmission was continuing to make adjustments and I found at times sudden bursts of power followed by a hard up shift. Definitely not something I expected with this type of luxury.

Layla Zoe jets off to new life Germany

Layla Zoe’s music has been so popular in Europe that it no longer makes sense for her to live in Canada. That’s why the former resident recently packed up her Montreal apartment and headed home for the holidays. She visited friends and family locally and will now be heading off to her new home in Germany this week. “I’ve been talking about it for several years and now is really the right time because now it is really taking off, not just (in Germany) but in many countries in Europe.” Zoe’s record label is located in Germany, Cable Car Records, and her main agent also resides there. Last fall Zoe went on tour with her new album The Lily through Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and France and said it was a very successful tour. “We’ve had reviews from all over the world with the new record and it’s opening a lot of doors for us,” she said of her and her band. Zoe’s last performance of 2013 had her returning to play the Women’s Blues Revue at Massey Hall in Toronto. Towards the end of 2013 Zoe was also nominated as Female Vocalist of the Year with the Maple Blues Awards, dubbed Canada’s national blues awards program. The winner will be announced on Jan. 20 but Zoe will be crossing her fingers from Germany.

While Zoe was home in the area for the holidays she joined forces with local documentary filmmaker Richard Boyce for a new video that will be part of his Coastal Tarsands project.

Boyce filmed a music video of Zoe and her song called Our Native Land at Rathtrevor Beach featuring Zoe’s lyrics paired with music composed by local musician and sound engineer Chris Raines. The

music video will be released in conjunction with Boyce’s project Coastal Tarsands, documenting Enbridge Tanker Routes. “I really wanted to do that because I spent every summer of my childhood at Long Beach and of course for me the West Coast is home,” she said. Boyce is releasing a series of 10-minute video documentaries which are being posted in chronological order on his website as they are produced. Boyce’s video featuring Zoe and Raines’ song will be released soon, Zoe said. Check for the video on Boyce’s website at www.coastaltarsands.ca and on Zoe’s website, listed below. Zoe will be playing a few countries for the first time this year, including England, the Netherlands and Austria. And she’ll finally have her chance to go to Disneyland, she said, playing Disneyland Paris this month. Although she’s a bit nervous about her move to Germany, she’s made major moves before, she said, and she’s excited about her musical prospects on that continent. “My music is really something I’ve sacrificed a lot for and I’ll continue to go wherever it takes me and do whatever it takes to get my music out to as many people as I can,” she said. New MAC exhibition features painting, fibre and photography Opening reception takes place in Parksville Jan. 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. where the public can mingle with the artists Large and commanding pieces of artwork currently adorn the walls of the McMillan Arts Centre. Gloria S. Daly is displaying her show Blanket Statement: No Shame In Patches in the Oceanside Gallery. The work is based on healing and rejuvenation using recycled or reclaimed woolen blankets. From the MAC, Daly will take this show on the road to Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Ontario. Deborah Sears will be displaying her series of paintings, The Primarys, in the Concert Gallery. She describes her work as understated, suggesting rather than

pronouncing the social, contextual statements underlying them. Her limited palette combines the primary red, yellow and blue of childhood with the earthy sienna, ochre and umber of early civilizations. Wayne Buhr will bring his photographic images Out of the Closet and into the Nemeth Gallery. Buhr has travelled extensively in search of the focus of his work and has “tried to capture those rare moments when light, form, geometry and emotions come together in a space of time and can be captured forever.” As many of Daly and Sears pieces are large, the MAC

opened up space in the former Gift Shop area to accommodate their smaller pieces. Much of the art on display by all of the artists will be for sale. The three diverse shows will run to Feb. 1. The opening reception for this exhibition is on Friday, Jan. 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. where the public will have an opportunity to meet the artists. MR. WILLIAM (Bill) STARLING May 22, 1915 – December 18, 2013

Bill was born in Ontario and spent his life living between England and Canada. He is predeceased by Muriel, an English girl who was the love of his life. Bill was a War Veteran and also worked at the Poppy Factory in London, after which he enjoyed being an antique dealer in London, England, and then returned to Canada. Bill spent many happy years in Qualicum Beach and was often seen around town visiting the antique shops. He was charming and loved by all who met him, and he was the much loved friend of Merlyn Patten and Don Kemp, who considered him family. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Fletcher, The Home Support Team and Veterans Affairs.

Jeppa Danielson Jeppa Danielson of Camrose, Alberta, went home to glory on December 27, 2013 after succumbing to injuries suffered in a car accident. At the age of 90, Jeppa remained full of life. At the same time, he longed to be with his Savior and his wife, Alma, who predeceased him in 2007. We are comforted to know that Jeppa is rejoicing in his new citizenship in Heaven, experiencing the things that God has prepared for him. 1 Corinthians 2:9 says “No eye has seen, no ear has heard and no one’s heart has imagined all the things that God has prepared for those who love him.” Jeppa (...a child of the King...a prayer warrior, a proud husband, father & grandfather, a leader, a friend, a carpenter, farmer, builder, inventor, steel worker, electrician, plumber, car restorer, toy maker, traveler, etc...a dreamer, schemer and a tease, an independent soul to whom the word “impossible” meant absolutely nothing...) will be missed greatly by his two daughters, Barb (Rick) Campbell of Parksville, B.C. and Shirley (Harold) Bakker of Whitecourt, Alberta and his grandchildren - Chris, Sarah, Luke, Matthew and Mikayla. Jeppa will also be missed by a multitude of extended family and friends.

There is going to be a Qualicum Beach connection at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia this year. William Dutton, a son and grandson of Qualicum Beach residents, is in line to represent Canada in two speed skating events at the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympics. Dutton, 24, is part of the family that owns Pheasant Glen Golf Resort. William is the son of Craig and Lynn and grandson of Phoenix Coyotes co-owner Bill Dutton. William Dutton qualified for the Canadian team in the 500M and 1,000M events by finishing third and fourth respectively, in those events at Canada’s Olympic trials in Calgary over the past few days. Dutton’s qualifying time in the 500M was 69.37 and 1:08.90

in the 1,000M. “I’m ecstatic,” Dutton said. “It’s been a lifelong dream of

mine to make it to the Olympics, and I feel like I’ve worked very hard this year and made a lot of

sacrifices and difficult choices. I went and trained in Norway for three months and it seems like

it’s paid off for me.” The trip to Sochi is especially rewarding to Dutton, who suffered a serious cut to his thigh and calf that required 12 stitches and two weeks away from racing to heal in early November. “I’m really happy that I was able to recover from that injury and still make the Olympic team,” he said. Dutton, who is from Humboldt, Saskatchewan, has been a Coyotes fan since his childhood — long before his grandfather and the IceArizona ownership group purchased the team last summer. “I’ve actually been a Coyotes fan for quite a few years. When I was a little kid I had my room painted Coyotes colors and I had a little strip of wallpaper with the Coyotes logo on it that went all the way around my room.” See Dutton, page A34

Thirteen games left, 12 points out of a playoff spot. That’s the predicament the Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals find themselves in heading for the home stretch. The Generals have one game in hand on the eighth place Saanich Braves and will look to gain some ground this weekend with a home-and-home series against the Comox Valley Glacier Kings. The Glacier Kings sit in third place in the north division, ahead of the last place Generals. “We’ve come together as a team in a different way with coach (Bill) Bestwick coming in. We know we’re up against the

wall in terms of getting there but I think we can do it, especially having the new coach pushing us, for sure,” said 17-yearold forward Mikey Markland. With one win and one loss under their new head coach Bill, the Generals need help not only on their end in terms of wins, but losses going the way of Saanich would help the Generals get that much closer to the playoffs. “If we can keep up the way we’ve been playing under the new coach, we’ll be in a good position from here on out. We got out to a quick start last game and we’ve been trying to keep things simple, so it’s been working out so far,” said Parksville’s Chandler Bruyckere, 18. Players say Bestwick has been keeping

The team has shown a willingness to be open and accept the different style of play I’ve been proposing.” The Generals will have some returning players this weekend as Logan Savard and Daine Elphicke are returning from their suspensions. Defenceman Liam Peel will also be back in the lineup after missing games last weekend with an injury. This means the Gens won’t have to

dress as many affiliate players as they did last weekend. “I’m sure that Comox is viewing these as must-win games as well to stay close to the top of the division and in the overall picture,” said Bestwick. “As far as I’m concerned, I’d like to set our level a little bit higher and see where we compare now with one of the better teams in the league. Until we’re eliminated mathematically from the playoffs, every game is winnable to me.”. Friday night the two teams play in Comox and Saturday night they return to Oceanside Place. Dutton said his admiration for the Coyotes stemmed from the team’s logo and colour scheme. He also admired Jeremy Roenick and other players on those early Phoenix teams. “Whenever I played hockey, my practice jersey was always a Coyotes jersey,” he said. “I loved hockey (back then). I wish I could be playing for the Phoenix Coyotes but it wasn’t really an option because I was a bit of a runt when I was younger. I think I was 5-foot-3 and 110 pounds when I was 15.” Instead, Dutton has become a world-class speed skater. Next up is a trip to Japan for the 2014 World Sprint Speed Skating Championship and then it’s off to Germany for a few final weeks of Olympic training before heading to the Olympics, which run Feb. 7-23. Dutton said he and his grandfather are very close. He said he fondly remembers them going fishing together years ago and playing golf in more recent years. “He’s probably one of my biggest fans and it’s nice to have that support,” Dutton said. Dutton said it’s also nice that his grandpa just happened to get involved with co-owning his favorite hockey team. Dutton will continue following the Coyotes from afar and showing his support for the team by wearing team apparel during his speed skating events, like he did on the podium in Calgary on Saturday as he was presented his medal for his third-place finish in the 500M. And who knows, if Dutton gets his way, you just might see a Coyotes logo on his Olympic skating suit in Sochi.
