Regional district hosts hearing on Thursday at Oceanside Place AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
The Regional District of Nanaimo is holding a public hearing on proposed bylaws that would accommodate new federal laws around growing medical marijuana. The hearing — at Oceanside Place on Thursday night — will provide details on the proposed changes and solicit feedback from any local residents who feel they may be affected. If adopted, two new bylaws will allow medical marihuana production facilities, licensed under the new Federal Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations on some specific types of land. In electoral areas A, C, E (Nanoose Bay), G (French Creek) and H (Bowser), facilities would be allowed on land zoned for agriculture and within the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). In area F (Coombs, Errington) they would be allowed on land zoned agriculture (A-1) and industrial (I-2). The bylaws would clarify that medical marijuana production is prohibited as a home based business, the facilities need to be federally licensed and 30 metre setbacks would be established. Written submissions provided in advance must be received by 4:30 p.m. Thursday to be in the public record. The proposed bylaws and additional information is available at the RDN office at 6300 Hammond Bay Road, Nanaimo and at www.rdn.bc.ca/. Call the planning department at 1-877-607-4111 or e-mail planning@rdn.bc.ca. The meeting is in the second floor multi-purpose room at Oceanside Place in Parksville’s Wembley Mall at 7 p.m. Thursday.

BODY FOUND NEAR MILNER GARDENS
Name likely won’t be released The woman, in her early 60s, was from Courtenay AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
Although police have identified the person who was found dead on the beach near Milner Gardens on Dec. 31, they might not ever publicly identify her.
“Because we do not suspect foul play there is no criminal investigation,” said Oceanside RCMP’s Cpl. Jessie Foreman. He said the woman, in her early 60s, was from Courtenay and had not been missing when her body was found around noon by someone walking on the beach. Foreman couldn’t release any further details but said the woman had
not been there long. The woman’s family have been contacted, Foreman said. He said it would be up to them if they wanted to publicly release her name. The RCMP and B.C. Coroner’s Service attended the scene. The coroner’s office said that unless a name could be given they couldn’t provide any details.

Cougar shot by conservation officer
CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com
A cougar has been shot dead in Englishman River Park by conservation officers after exhibiting what Sgt. Ben York called a “similar behavior profile” in four different encounters. York said the cougar was approaching people, many with dogs, and following them for a long period of time. “The cougar was not easy to scare off,” said York, noting this was uncommon. On Dec. 28 the cougar, a young female, was killed. Conservation officers made the decision to shoot the cougar after two park closures and various complaints. Englishman River Falls Provincial Park was first closed from Dec. 21 to Dec. 27 as a “precautionary measure” after three encounters with the cougar, explained York. “On Dec. 27, CO Steve Ackles checked all the cameras and traps and found nothing so he removed the traps and opened the park,” said York. “Quite literally, the next day someone was approached by a cougar and had a hard time scaring it off.” York said they closed the park again and called in their volunteer cougar houndsman. “CO Ackles and the houndsman immediately picked up the scent of the cougar since the houndsman’s dogs were on site,” said York. “They chased the cougar about 600 metres upstream and shot it.” Though York said he couldn’t be positive it was the same cougar, the behavior it expressed was “identical” to those in past reports.

Jack is 2014’s first baby He’s perfectly healthy and weighed in at nine pounds, eight ounces when born Jan. 3 CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com
It took a few days, but Parksville Qualicum Beach finally welcomed the first baby of 2014. Jack Schultz came into the world on Jan. 3 at 11.56 p.m. – all nine pounds, eight ounces of him. “He’s perfectly healthy,” said the newborn’s mother Janice, beaming with the kind of natural glow reserved only for women who have just birthed a child. Jack was the second child for the Schul-
tz’s, who rushed to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital from Parksville late Friday night where their “absolutely amazing” midwife, Julia Cianci was already waiting. “I was in labour for two hours and pushed for six minutes,” said Janice, who endured a completely natural birth void of any pain medication. “We left the hospital by 11 a.m. the next morning.” Jack was due on Jan. 1, arrived three days late just shy of midnight and still won the title of New Years baby. When asked how she felt about her new baby brother, four-year-old Leah looked around thoughtfully and withdrew into a sudden shyness, however, her adorning curiosity is unmistakable as she, like everybody else, can’t keep her eyes off Jack.

“Most homes in Oceanside are worth less in value compared to last year’s assessment roll,” said Bill Dawson, Vancouver Island regional acting assessor. “Most… will see modest changes in the minus 15 to plus five per cent range,” he said of the area’s 25,000 property owners. The Parksville Qualicum Beach area’s overall 2014 assessment decreased 1.3 per cent ($119 million) from last year to $8.6 billion this year. That was despite an increase of almost $103 million from subdivisions, rezoning and new construction, Dawson said.
AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
While property values are up slightly across the province on average, they are stable or down slightly on Vancouver Island, including the Parksville Qualicum Beach area. As reported in the 2014 property assessment roll released by the B.C. Assessment Authority Jan. 2, the value of all B.C. property rose 1.27 per cent, despite declines in most regions for farm, recreational and managed forest land.

In Parksville the average single family dwelling is up 0.6 per cent to $302,300 but strata units are down 12.8 per cent to $185,792. In Qualicum Beach the average single family dwelling is down 1.3 per cent to $366,600 and strata units are down 4.3 per cent to $191,182. In the rural areas single family dwellings under two acres are down one per cent to $374,600 on average and larger properties are down 5.3 per cent to $447,200. Across the local region commercial property, with a total the taxable assessment of $474 million, have changed from minus 25 to five per cent with an average increase of 2.7 per cent. Parksville director of finance Lucky Butterworth explained that a change in assessment doesn’t mean a change in individual property taxes since they
work back from the assessment to raise the needed revenue. A change in assessment only impacts a property if it is different from the average, meaning if your assessment changes the same as the average, the only change in your taxes would be those set by the municipal tax rates — for example Parksville’s five year financial plan calls for a three per cent increase each year, or about $70 a year for the average detached home. The assessments also reveal the most valuable residential properties on the Island with one on Dorcas Point in Nanoose Bay ranking number two at $9.6 million. That only makes it the 236th most valuable property in the province. Of the 20 most valuable residential properties on the Island outside greater Victoria, eight are waterfront properties
in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area. “Property owners who feel that their property assessment does not reflect market value as of July 1, 2013 or see incorrect information on their notice should contact B.C. Assessment as indicated on their notice as soon as possible,” said Dawson. “If a property owner is still concerned about their assessment after speaking to one of our appraisers, they may submit a notice of complaint (appeal) by Jan. 31, for an independent review by a property assessment review panel,” he added. The local assessment office is at 300125 Wallace Street, Nanaimo, open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Gas leak prompts evacuation
Fortis B.C. had the scene cleaned up and under control within 30 minutes CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com
Businesses along Hirst Street were briefly evacuated Monday afternoon at approximately 1 p.m. after construction workers hit a gas leak. “The gas guys responded really quickly,” said Parksville Heavy Equipment employee Scott Benson. “There was no fire, if anything it was more of a nuisance.” Fortis B.C. attended the scene, cleaned up the leak and were on their way within half an hour of the incident. Vancouver Island Insurance Centre and Salvation Army Boutique Thrift Store closed their doors immediately, vacating their staff and customers, but both stores were able to reopen within the hour. Parksville Heavy Equipment construction workers resumed digging, as well. The workers, contracted by the City of Parksville, are renovating the sidewalk, curb and gutter and putting in an irrigation system and tree plants along Hirst Street.

DRAMATIC CRASH: Two people were sent to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and another man was handed an immediate roadside prohibition after a crash Monday morning in Parksville. Police say a man driving a black Chevrolet was travelling south on HIghway 19A just before 11 a.m. when he collided with a Dodge Caravan that was pulling out of the Tim Horton’s lot, heading northbound. Police say the man driving the Chevrolet showed signs of impairment, but refused to provide a breath sample. The man and woman who were in the Dodge, which ended up on its roof across the highway in front of the Subway/Liquor Store strip mall, were taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for observation.

Oceanside Health Centre administrative support worker Barb Foster demonstrates the telehealth audio-video link to Mark and Wendy Aitken of Qualicum Beach prior to their consultation with a B.C. Cancer Agency oncologist, Dr. Andrew Attwell in Victoria.

New age healthcare Modern technology brings hospital care a little closer to home for Parksville Qualicum Beach residents
Mark and Wendy Aitken have travelled thousands of kilometres for exams, consultations and treatment since tumors were detected in Wendy’s brain. Now there is much less driving required for the Qualicum Beach couple who can consult with a B.C. Cancer Agency oncologist, Dr. Andrew Attwell in Victoria, without having to make a round-trip of 320 kilometres spending close to five hours in their car. The Aitkens are able to meet with Attwell through Island Health’s Telehealth network — a video-conference system that enables patients and health care providers to consult “face-toface” even though they are substantial distances apart. “This takes a lot of pressure off of us and takes a lot of cost away too,” Mark said, as he and his wife settled in to the armchairs of one of two clinical telehealth rooms at the Oceanside Health Centre in Parksville. “It was a 10 to 15-minute drive rather than two and a half hours to have the consultation.” The Aitkens moved to Vancouver Island from Airdrie, Alberta — just north of Calgary — three and a half years ago. When tests showed a change in Wendy’s condition two years ago, the couple initially travelled back to Calgary where she was originally diagnosed with brain cancer. Wendy’s care has since been transferred to B.C. Wendy said telehealth has proven to be a sensible way to handle consultations that are follow-ups to her Medical Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans which have been conducted in
Nanaimo and Comox. “It’s been no problem getting used to telehealth. As long as the doctor can answer your questions, it’s a good way to do it.” Attwell sees telehealth consultations as an efficient way to handle one part of an overall care plan that takes medical history into account and may include ongoing medical exams, monitoring and treatment; telehealth is used by the B.C. Cancer Agency across the province to serve patients in smaller communities. “It’s convenient for patients. It’s in their own communities and saves people from driving up and down the Island,” Attwell said. “A lot of times patients and family members have to take days off work, and travel can be uncomfortable for a patient who is unwell.” Barb Foster, one of the Oceanside administrative support workers who assist patients and family members with the telehealth equipment, said people quickly become accustomed to the consultation process. “I tell patients it’s just like being in a doctor’s office — except he or she is not there in person. They’re on the screen,” Foster said. Island Health says it is recognized as a leader in delivering programs to support better health outcomes for patients through video technology. Currently, clinical telehealth services are available at 48 different sites in 18 communities. Telehealth was available in Parksville at Trillium Lodge before the service was relocated to the Oceanside Health Centre which opened in September 2013. Consultations are available in a variety of fields including oncology, thoracics, mental health, cardiology, genetics, nephrology, eating disorders and geriatric medicine. — Submitted by Island Health/NEWS Staff

Strait of Georgia
W
e expect the Strait of Georgia will be the top newsmaker of 2014, both locally and throughout the province. One could argue the health and welfare of our ocean should be the top news item every year, but there are actions and discussion expected this year that will bring particular attention to the waters off the eastern coast of Vancouver Island. The big picture is highlighted by Kinder Morgan’s application filed only a few weeks ago to triple the flow of oil through its Trans Mountain Pipeline from Edmonton to the B.C. coast. Estimates suggest this could mean a seven-fold increase in tanker traffic around our Island. The separate Enbridge Northern Gateway Project was given the thumbs up (albeit with 209 required conditions) by the federal joint review panel, also last month, for major expansion of Kitimat’s terminal to handle more oil. We have stated here previously we find it difficult to believe we, as a human race, have not better developed energy alternatives to oil. However, we remain dependent on it, both for products in our everyday life and for many thousands of high-paying jobs. That is to say the notion of stopping oilsands production, pipelines and tanker traffic is not realistic until reliable, safer, affordable alternatives are widely available. Closer to home, Parksville’s plans for the Englishman River’s water will undoubtedly have an impact on the waters off our coast. Meanwhile, 2014 is a critical year for Qualicum Beach to set up the future of its waterfront, and the town has committed money and brought in a highly-respected company (SNC Lavalin) to work on matters related to erosion and future use of the beach. Travelling further up Island, seaweed harvesting off Bowser and Deep Bay will continue to be a hotly-contested issue, and who knows if the Raven Coal project will resurface, a plan some say would be devastating to the local shellfish industry. Yes, the waters off our coast from Nanoose Bay to Deep Bay will get a lot of attention this year, and rightly so. — Editorial by John Harding

PheasaNt GleN PRoPosal ChaNGes Simmons’ response was extremely lame suggesting I fear change. Change was exactly what my husband and I voted for in 2005, when Pheasant Glen Golf Resort (PGGR) asked for our support to proceed with their well-defined proposal that included a new clubhouse, conference centre, hotel, sports, fitness and wellness facilities and 200 resort homes, plus a severance for the senior Duttons to build a home. The development would have been excellent for the town because in the short term it would’ve created jobs and, more importantly, in the long term, would’ve generated a substantial amount of on-going tourist dollars, as proven by the Qualicum Beach study in 2009. This new development request is nothing like the old one. PGGR is trying to ram through something totally different — backed by some abrasive, self-serving members, a biased survey, two flashy drawings, high-priced legal and planning opinions and a purported mega-million dollar windfall to the town. If their numbers are correct (PGGR advertisement in The NEWS, Nov. 21, 2013), it means we’ll have more highend homes, not affordable housing which Craig Dutton himself stated (May 27, Qualicum Beach town council meeting) was one of the reasons his daughter could not live here. Crazy, eh? If PGGR wants to make a difference for their members and the town, they must first offer updated plans and drawings that fully describe exactly what it is they propose to build. I do not fear change, but I do detest bullies who willfully pit one party against an-

other and who try to push through their own agendas without due process, those being the official community plan, the growth containment boundary and the regional growth strategy, as well as the land-use covenant they agreed to and signed. You’ll have to do better than suggesting the intended clubhouse monies went into course improvements. If said improvements were that good, how come PGA Tour Canada only selected Crown Isle and Morningstar for their upcoming qualifying schools in 2014 and 2015? deB MCkinLeY Qualicum Beach
thaNKs FoR the bethleheM walK Re: The NEWS Dec. 3 letter by John Simmons (‘Don’t fear change’). I would like to express my gratitude to the Parksville Baptist church for their wonderful reminder of an amazing happening that took place over 2,000 years ago, when God visited our planet, taking on a human form and being born as a baby. So impacting was this visitation that our very calendar has been divided into B.C. (before Christ) and A.D. (Latin: anno Domini, in the year of our Lord), speaking of how many years have passed since the birth of Jesus. I know personally some of the people involved in the Bethlehem Walk. Months of preparation were needed, including the hours of cooking required to provide for the thousands who attended and continue to attend year after year. We are most grateful to you all.
Others I would like to thank are the Salvation Army and the S.O.S., not only for their Christmas contributions, but for what these organizations do throughout the year. I know many who have been helped in times of need through their services, and also know that they were treated with respect and kindness. Thank you again for your service to our community. We are very blessed to have you amongst us. ShirLeY PoweLL Qualicum Beach

What a great way to start the New Year. Kwalikum Secondary School’s 2014 grads had a hugely successful fundraiser on Saturday. The tree chipping and bottle drive fundraiser had an excellent turn out of volunteers, both grads and grad parents/families, and the support of the Town of Qualicum Beach, with town councillors and the mayor in attendance, as well as several public works staff members. This six-hour volunteer effort raised an amazing $3,028.90 — $940 was raised in cash donations and $2,088.90 in bottles. It is also anticipated that more will be raised in the coming weeks as residents drop off their trees, donations and bottles at the Qualicum Beach public works yard. A huge thank-you to all the volunteers, the Town of Qualicum Beach, the mayor, councillors and staff, and the residents who supported this KSS Grad 2014 fundraising event. We couldn’t have done it without you.

re you old enough to remember when boozing was cool? When the airwaves foamed over with cheery beer ads and Christmas season magazines featured full-colour depictions of Santa relaxing after a hard night’s work with a noggin of Captain Morgan’s at his elbow? I can remember when ‘drink up, boys’ was what everyone did just before they picked up their car keys and drove home; when the guy at the office party wearing a lampshade and propositioning the receptionist was regarded as amusing, not pathetic and repulsive. I remember the days when most of us thought alcohol was a good buddy and a swell social enabler — not a treacherous weasel out to embarrass and possibly kill us. And I remember the international icon who exemplified elegant boozing in all its glory — James Bond. Sophisticated, unflappable James Bond, ordering — in between offing baddies and boffing beauties — his martinis ‘shaken, not stirred’.

On average, Bond was downing about 75 grams of pure alcohol every day — more than twice the danger level... British national health
Turns out that Mister Bond wasn’t so cool. He had a bigger problem than the KGB, STD’s or the wrath of M. Turns out 007 was a lush. That’s not my conclusion. You’ll find it in the pages of the British Medical Journal. Researchers for the magazine analyzed all of the Bond books written by his creator, Sir Ian Fleming, ferreting out the hero’s alcohol intake. They noted every martini, highball, flute of champagne, glass of wine and bottle of beer. They con-
servatively factored in every vague reference — when Bond ‘called for the drink tray’, ‘got drunk’ or ‘had drinks’ — and concluded that Bond’s famous ‘licence to kill’ was aimed primarily at his own liver. Of the 123.5 days that are chronicled, Bond abstained on only 48.5 of them — and 36 of those ‘dry’ days weren’t by choice. Bond was either in the slammer, recovering in hospital or otherwise constrained from reaching a bottle. The researchers further reckon that, on average, Bond was downing about 75 grams of pure alcohol every day — more than twice the danger level set out by Bond’s own British National Health Service. He was also susceptible to bouts of Rob Fordian excess. On the third day of Bond’s adventures in From Russia with Love researchers extrapolate that the secret agent chugged the equivalent of nearly 400 grams of pure alcohol. That’s like 14 vodka martinis or 25 beers. You try aiming a Walther PKK after a dozen or so martinis.
Or aiming anything else, come to that. The British Medical Journal study notes that Bond’s intake would have him flirting with hypertension, stroke, depression and, ahem, extreme sexual dysfunction. Meanwhile, an article in another medical magazine, The International Journal of Clinical Medicine, chronicles the case of an unnamed 61-year old Texan who was recently hospitalized for ‘extreme inebriation’. Trouble is, he denied having a single drink. A medical examination revealed that he was telling the truth. The man suffers from a condition known as ‘auto-brewery syndrome’. Simply put, his stomach makes beer. His gut contains yeast that converts all starches (even vegetables and grains) into ethanol. The man can get a buzz from downing a Big Mac. If James Bond existed, he’d be eating his heart out. Having already dispatched his liver. Arthur Black lives on Salt Spring Island. His column appears Tuesdays in The NEWS.
letters Catspan needs food & donations Catspan is still urgently in need of cat food. The charity’s funds need to go towards paying for vet bills as the group is still in the process of trapping and neutering cats on two local farms and has neutered nearly twice as many feral cats in 2013 than it did in 2012. Feral cat colony stability is maintained, in part through neutering as well as by feeding just enough food for the colony. Should a new cat appear, without a tipped ear, which indicates that he has already been neutered, he/she is trapped and neutered and
returned to the colony. The cats eventually die, having been as humanely treated as possible, and without having given birth to more kittens. The first colony of over 50 cats neutered by Catspan over 20 years ago died out in 2008 when the last colony cat, Heba, died at the age of 19, which is highly unusual — neutered feral cats usually survive about seven years. The average cost to Catspan to neuter, treat (for parasites and injuries) and vaccinate a feral cat is $180. Unlike shelters and rescues that get adoption fees to cover part of their costs, none of the money Catspan spends is recoverable through adoption fees as these cats are not human-friendly and there-

QUALICUM BEACH RESIDENT LANDS YTV ROLE
‘I like being in front of a camera’ Tune in Mondays to see Harrison Houde LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com
Harrison Houde grew up watching YTV and now he’s starring in a show on the cable television channel. The now part-time Qualicum Beach resident found out he landed a starring role in Some Assembly Required in July. “I was pretty excited,” he said while back in Qualicum Beach for the holidays. “I just laid on the ground for a couple seconds, I was like is this real life?” Houde is 17 years-old and had been attending Kwalikum Secondary School before he found out about his new role. That meant he and his mother had to relocate to Vancouver for him to work on the show four days a week. He has already shot 16 episodes and the first one premiered yesterday, Jan. 6 at 6:30 p.m. The show runs every Monday at that time on YTV. When Houde began working on the show he was also filming the third season of the TVO kids
show Finding Stuff Out. He began starring in that show in Grade 9 and missed his first month as KSS as he was shooting in Montreal. That show is about the real-world application of science and has enabled Houde to engage in fun activities at the studio in Montreal as well as at some cool Canadian locations including the Vancouver Aquarium and a rock quarry in Victoria. That show also aired on the Knowledge Network in B.C. last summer. Houde moved to Qualicum Beach when he was in Grade 3. When he was eight-years-old he started making music videos featuring his own original work and doing parodies of other performers. “That”s what kind of got me into acting,” he said. “I thought, I like being in front of a camera, I like making videos and filming, so maybe I should try acting.” Houde began uploading his videos to his own YouTube Channel when he was 12 and named his entertainment company Turnip Time Entertainment. He now has more than 12,000 subscribers to his You-
Tube channel xTurnipTimex. When he was 12 he also got an agent and by 13 he had a role in Diary of a Wimpy Kid. “It was a small role but for a first role to be in a feature film that goes to theatres was a pretty big deal for me, I was really excited,” he said. He’s also made appearances in the TV shows Untold Stories of the ER and Fairly Odd Parents. Houde has been living in Vancouver with his mother since August last year and said he’s really enjoying making Some Assembly Required in Burnaby. The show surrounds 14-yearold Jarvis Raines who is president of a toy company called Knickknack Toys. In order to make the company a success he has to invent some of the most exciting toys in history and hire the best team of workers possible. Harrison plays Bowie, Raines’ best friend, who he hires among a group of other interesting young characters. Houde said he hopes to continue with work in sitcoms and other comedy work in the future.

Qualicum Beach’s Harrison Houde stars in a YTV sitcom that premiered yesterday and runs every Monday evening.
“I really hope that my acting career can continue on from here and just grow bigger and
bigger,” he said. For more on Houde check out his website at www.HarrisonHoude.com.

A number of volunteers with the local charity Aldea Maya set out recently to continue work in Guatemala and they will be there until Feb. 18. In January of 2012, Aldea Maya started up a middle school in Chukumuk which offers schooling to children in Grades 7, 8 and 9. The charity pays all the teachers salaries, school equipment and student supplies and fees using donations including those collected from many local residents, Vancouver Island University, Davies Electric and local Rotary Clubs. Pictures of the students with their new school supplies can be seen on the website. Those interested in sponsoring a child to attend school can visit the website for more

The charity also offers extensive garden and nutrition programs and provides energy efficient stoves, water filters, building projects for housing and more. Founder Louise Sosa said she’s excited to see how the garden projects and the first women’s cooperative are progressing. “We hope to start several more cooperatives,” she said in an e-mail. “Hand-ups rather than handouts.” The charity’s first full time employee Jaime Marroquin began English classes this past November and December, and has started a blog on the charity’s website for people to keep up to date with all the work being done by the charity in the Lake Atitlan area of Guatemala.

Train station pieces together past
Museum asks residents to bring memories to meeting
Many people have used Qualicum Beach’s train station over the past 100 years, and now is your chance to share your memories. Some people have worked or volunteered at the train station, others have caught the train or even had their wedding pictures taken there. On Jan. 7 the Qualicum Beach Museum will host their first meeting of the year starting at 2 p.m. in the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre. Mary Ashley, chair of the Island Corridor Foundation Board, will be guest speaking about the
history of the train station. Ashley will facilitate a discussion of attendees memories of the train station. This will be a great time to bring forward your memories. In the summer the Qualicum Beach museum and the Town of Qualicum Beach will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Qualicum Beach train station. If you have photographs you want to share, please bring those as well. This is a great opportunity to build a fuller story of one of the oldest buildings in town as the train station has played an important role in our local history. —Submitted By Wendy Maurer

Kids aren’t the only ones going back to school this week. Vancouver Island University Eldercollege classes also begin the week of Jan. 13. And the University is offering students many new course options, including the Thirties in Europe: Democrats, Demagogues and Dictators; Vancouver Island History 1871-1914; and Understanding Climate Change, among others. “It’s a fantastic program,” said program co ordinator Regan McKeever. “It offers quality learning to older adults.” According to McKeever, Eldercollege encourages lively class discussion and is meant to “expand our knowledge base to better understand the world around us.” There are no exams, compulsory assignments or grades. The courses are based on participation and personal learning. VIU’s Eldercollege is open to people 50 years and older. All courses are held during the day, at either the Nanaimo or Parksville campus or select public locations, all of which are accessible by public transit. Eldercollege is operated on a volunteer basis to minimize costs. Six week courses are $40. For more info visit www. viu.ca/eldercollege or call 1-866-734-6252.
Prospect theory looks at emotional impact
Improve your finances. Next to losing weight it’s the most popular New Year’s resolution. This could involve a number of things (i.e. getting out of debt, or working more), but often it also means trying to get a better handle on your investments — watching them more closely and looking for proactive ways to improve returns. This may sound like a good idea, but in practice doesn’t always work out. In fact studies have shown that watching your investments too closely is more likely to result in lower returns. It has to do with something called prospect theory, which among other things looks at the emotional impact of investment gains versus investment losses. According to prospect theory, an investment loss will have roughly double the emotional impact of an investment gain. In other words: when you lose money you are twice as sad as you are happy when you make money. To illustrate the effect this can have,

Generals split games despite new blood New coach and eight new players help earn an exciting victory for struggling team T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
It was an interesting week for the Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals — they have a new head coach and called up several affiliate players to fill roster spots this past weekend. The Generals have a new head coach in Bill Bestwick, who was brought in to take over for Dan Lemmon, who was relieved of his duties after just two months with th team. Bestwick is the Generals’ fourth head coach this season. The Gens also called up eight players. Mathieu Jallabert, Trent Bell and David Biagioni from the North Island Silvertips got the call, along with Ryan Hogg, Geoff So and Kyle Johnson from the Burnaby Winter Club. The Generals were on the road Friday against Penninsula and ended up losing their first game under the latest new coach. Penninsula handed the Generals a 3-1 loss. “It was a lot of learning over these last few days for us,” captain Travis Flug said about the style of play that Bestwick is looking to bring in. “We played a close game against Penninsula and it was tough but considering the way things were, we handled it pretty well.” Nate Fitzpatrick scored the lone goal for the Gens on Friday and goaltender Evgeuni Makarski kept the Generals in it

all night with some outstanding play in net. The Generals came out on top 5-4 on Saturday in a double overtime finish that saw Chandler Bruckyere score his first this season off a shot from the point with 12 seconds left in double OT. The Gens came out flying in the first period, out shooting
the Kerry Park Islanders 23-8 and scoring three times. Wyatt Petryshen, an 18-year-old from Calgary, got the scoring started just eight minutes into the first period. The second goal of the game came from Hogg, the AP from the Burnaby Winter Club. Hogg, who just turned 15 two weeks ago, dangled his way out of the
corner and roofed it home on the backhand for his first VIJHL career goal. Just over six minutes later, Flug banged home a rebound off a good chance that was created by Brodie Smith and Mikey Markland, who was everywhere on Saturday night. The Generals carried a 3-0 lead heading into the second,
where things got interesting. Parksville product Trent Bell, 16, scored his first career VIJHL goal as well off a great individual effort. “It was good to score that goal. My family and friends were here tonight too so that was pretty cool to be able to score in front of them at home here,” Bell said. Kerry Park then took advantage of a lapse on the Generals part, scoring three quick goals in the span of three minutes to cut the Gens lead to 4-3. The Islanders eventually tied it up in the third period to send it to OT. The first overtime saw both teams go back and forth and with no score, a second OT was needed. The Islanders were awarded a penalty shot in the second OT but goaltender Liam Giroux stood his ground to extend the game. The Generals charged back down the ice moments later as Bruckyere beat the Kerry Park goalie to give the Generals the 5-4 victory. The Generals are back in action this weekend in a homeand-home series against the Comox Valley Glacier Kings. You can catch Friday’s game on 88.5 The Beach with playbe-play from Dominic Abassi. On, Saturday night the Generals are back on home ice against the Kings and the puck drops at 7:30 p.m..

Local Whalers in Army All-American Bowl Week T yson Taylor
sports@pqbnews.com
Two members of the Ballenas Whalers were down in Texas taking part in the Army All-American Bowl Week over the holidays. Brock Mould and Nick Cessford were named to the Under 18 Team B.C. squad that earned the right to play in Texas in the international portion of this week’s festivities. It’s the second straight year that the U-18 team from B.C. made the trip south to take part in the football showcase in San Antonio, Texas. Team B.C., originally slated to take part in two games, were relegated to
just the one game as their first game was turned into a “controlled scrimmage” due to unforeseen circumstances. Eligibility was a concern for a number of players on the San Antonio East team that were slated to play against Team B.C. There are rules in place, which allow only a certain amount of games to be played by a high school player once their high school season is finished. Mould, a Grade 12 student, is one of four players returning to the Team B.C. roster from last year. Joining Mould on Team B.C. is fellow Whaler standout Cessford, a Grade 11 student. Both Mould and Cessford had good years
with the Whalers this past season. There were plenty of scouts on hand from both sides of the border to watch as the boys looked to make a name for themselves and grab some of the spotlight in hopes of landing a scholarship opportunity to continue their football careers. In the only official game Team B.C. played, they went up against a team from Europe and managed to come out on top in a 45-7 blowout. Team Europe scored the first points of the game and then it was all Team B.C. from there, scoring 45 unanswered points to close out the game.
All in all, it was a good experience for the team to showcase their talents in Texas but would have been a bit more fun had they got to play a real game against the Americans. “I think this year’s team had the same amount of commitment and competitive spirit as last year’s team. We might have had some tough players that didn’t make it on the roster because of other issues but our kids came to play. We’d like to have played the Americans in a full game. Not getting to play them was disappointing,” said Team B.C. head coach Tom Kudaba, who also coaches the Terry Fox Ravens out of Port Coquitlam.

Local Peewee Thunderbirds take silver Oceanside peewee hockey team takes second in Campbell River tournament T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
The Oceanside Peewee Thunderbirds were in Campbell River over the holidays for some tournament action on the ice. The tournament took place Dec. 27-29 and saw a good showing from the Thunderbirds as they managed to come away with a silver medal after a closely contested final game against the Campbell River Eagles. The Thunderbirds went 2–1–1 in round robin play, beating the Campbell River Wolverines and a team from Comox to advance to the final against the Campbell River Eagles. The final was a close game all the way to the end with the Thunderbirds pulling their goalie late to try and tie it up but they ran out of time and ended up dropping the final 6–5, settling for a well earned second place finish. Bill Bestwick has been brought in as the new head coach of the Save-on-Foods Oceanside Generals. Bestwick was mpost recently the head coach and general manager for the BCHL’s Victoria Grizzlies, a stint which ended abruptly in early December. The move came as a bit of a surprise due to the success that Bestwick was having as the head coach of the team, which was sitting third in the BCHL at the time he was let go. The availability of Bestwick was something that was too good to pass up, according to the GM of the Generals, Lou Gravel. In doing so, the club parted ways with Dan Lemmon, who took over as head coach less than two months ago. “I think that Dan did an incredible job with being put in the position that he was in. But that being said, when you have a chance to get a guy like Bill Bestwick, it’s something you don’t pass on,” Gravel said about the coaching change. Bestwick brings in an excellent winning resume as a head coach over the last 20 years. He spent several seasons as the head coach of the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL, as well as general manager, owner and several other titles during his time with the Clippers. One of the more successful seasons Bestwick had as a coach came in 2003–04, where the Clippers captured both the BCHL and Doyle Cup championships. Currently living in Nanaimo and a member of Nanaimo City Council, Bestwick also recently took on an advisory role with the Clippers in addition to being named the new head coach of the Generals.
“Our relationship in the past has been as competitors,” said Bestwick about joining the Clippers and working closely with their head coach Mike Vandekamp. “I think there is probably a mutual understanding that we’ve been competitors and we’ve been adversarial more than being on the same side, but there will be adjustments made along the way.” Starting with the Generals Jan. 2, Bestwick got right to work with the team, meeting with them for several hours before their first practice under their new head coach last Thursday night. “We’ve been learning a lot of new things and it’s been good having Bill Bestwick as the guy teaching you,” captain Travis Flug said. “He has so much experience, you can just feel everything in his emotions. It’s a great opportunity for us hear in the locker room and we’re really excited about it.” With two games under his belt as head coach of the Generals, Bestwick is optimistic. He’s also not saying wheteher he will be around the Generals past the six weeks left in this regular season to help with off-season recruitment or continue to coach the Generals next season “It’s a lot of fun. These kids in the last three days have bought in and really worked hard over their last six periods of hockey. I have a passion for the game and being around these kids is fun and if I can help them a little bit with what it takes to play at this level, and any level above this, would be great. It’s too early to tell what will happen after the season. I’m just focused on working with these kids to the end of this season. It would be nice to get some wins here and see if we can maybe sneak into the post season. So we’ll see what happens.”
