SERVING MISSION SINCE 1908
The thrill of the Games a family affair Dan Kinvig ABBOTSFORD NEWS
Janie Green has never had to look far to find famous role models. When she was in kindergarten, her class had a celebrity dress-up day. While most of her classmates came as movie stars or musicians, Green wore a Team Canada jacket and Olympic medals around her neck. Real ones, mind you, not dollar-store replicas. She was representing her mom, former national team short track speed skating star Eden Donatelli Green, whose glittering career included a silver medal in the 500 metres and bronze in the 3000m relay at the 1988 Calgary Winter Games, and a gold in the 500m at the 1987 world championships. If there was any doubt that the speed skating gene would be passed on to Janie, it’s worth noting that her father Julian Green was also an Olympian in the sport, representing Great Britain, and later served as coach of Canada’s national team. Her parents currently coach speed skating clubs in Maple
Ridge and Langley, and her maternal grandfather, George Donatelli, helms a club in Chilliwack. “Ever since I heard about Mom being in the Olympics, it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do,” said Janie, now a 13-year-old Grade 8 student at Mission Secondary. “The rink is my second home. I was there four days after I was born. I’ve just always been there.” For the Green family, the upcoming BC Winter Games in Mission (Feb. 20-23, 2014) represent a highlight in their overlapping speed skating careers. Janie, representing the Ridge Meadows Racers, qualified for the Zone 3 Fraser Valley team, finishing tied for first in the U14 girls division at the qualification event earlier this month. Eden, meanwhile, is one of the key contributors on the BC Games leadership team, serving as director of registration and results. And Julian will be coaching. For Eden, who works as a Grade

YEAR IN REVIEW 2013 January • Local swimming sensation Brent Hayden was inducted into the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame in Vancouver. “I’m extremely thrilled,” Hayden said shortly after the ceremony. “There are so many great men and women in the Hall of Fame and to be among them is an honour.” Hayden won a bronze medal in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London in the 100 m freestyle. He finished with a time of 47.80 seconds, far off his personal best of 47.27. Canada had not placed an athlete in the Olympic 100 m freestyle final in 52 years and had never captured a medal before.
February • The 2014 B.C. Winter Games countdown clock was unveiled at the Mission Leisure Centre. The Games’ success will be driven by the volunteer efforts of local citizens, said Mission Mayor Ted Adlem. Politicians and staff of the day submitted a bid in September 2008 and by April 2009, Mission’s success at securing the event was announced. • Police searched Mission Secondary School for a bomb, but came up empty-handed. The school’s students and staff were evacuated after a message was found scrawled on a bathroom mirror stating a bomb would go off at 1:45 p.m. The school was reopened the next day.

More than 10,000 marijuana plants at four rural Mission properties were discovered when the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of B.C. executed search warrants. One of the properties in the 13000 block of De Graff Road, was concealed in an underground bunker disguised as a horse paddock. Other properties raided were in the 10000 and 14000 blocks of Sylvester Road, the 12000 block of Dewdney Trunk Road and another in Langley. Four men in their 30s were arrested and taken into custody.

March •Pre-registration started for Mission’s proposed public traditional school, and some parents sacrificed hours of sleep to ensure their children would be included if the academy proceeded. • The search for 18-year-old Rachel Pernosky was called off and the file handed to homicide investigators after her body was found in Chilliwack. The Mission teen was last seen around 12:30 a.m. at her home in the 7700 block of Kite Street. Her cellphone and purse were still in the house. Police said the attack was not random, but didn’t have any suspects. • Construction for a $2.3 million pedestrian
April • District of Mission followed orders from the B.C. Supreme court to issue a building permit for a medical clinic and pharmacy on First Avenue. • Mission Public Schools faced a $3.9 million deficit, and said the debt would be retired within three years. Originally, a $1.2-million deficit was reported to the board of trustees, but further investigation into the budget revealed the higher number. • Carly Rae Jepsen cleaned up at the Juno Awards and returned home with three trophies. The Mission sing-
er, dressed in a yellow gown and white shoes, picked up the top Canadian music awards in Regina, Sask. for Album of the Year, Pop Album of the Year (Kiss), and Single of the Year (Call Me Maybe).
May • Mission school board trustees supported transforming Edwin S. Richards elementary into a fine arts centre and Hillside elementary into a Kindergarten to Grade 6 traditional school. The change was aimed at keeping students in the Mission school district and preventing school closures. Fifteen of the 23 empty classrooms in the urban area were at Hillside, ESR and Windebank. • Some of the most state-of-the-art growops ever discovered
• The BC Liberals held onto Maple Ridge-Mission and Abbotsford-Mission ridings as Christy Clark led her party to a come-frombehind victory in the provincial election. Incumbent Marc Dalton won the Maple Ridge-Mission riding with 8,842 votes. His closest competitor, BC New Democrat Mike Bocking, received 7,310 votes. BC Liberal Simon Gibson captured his riding with 51 per cent of the votes. NDP’s Preet Rai finished in second place. • The Willows apartments on Third Avenue was destroyed by fire, which left close to 50 people without homes. Make commitment to health After a season of over-indulging, many Canadians woke up Jan. 1 and said this is the year they get hearthealthy. That wake-up call to become more active and eat better can’t come a moment too soon, according to the Canadian Medial Association. The CMA’s latest report on the nation’s heart health says we’re not doing very well — in fact, we’re almost on life support. Across the nation, fewer than 10 per cent of Canadian adults meet the criteria for “ideal” cardiovascular health, which means most still don’t get enough exercise (at least 30 minutes of walking per day), and most don’t eat properly (consuming five or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day). People are getting heavier and we see this everywhere, and in our own waistlines, which seem to expand with each passing year. But adults aren’t alone in risky health behaviours. According to the study, only about 20 per cent of kids between
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
12 and 19 years are making lifestyle choices to keep them healthy — including being active for an hour or more a day. Where is all this heading? The bad news is unless people’s habits change, there will be more incidences of diabetes, hypertension, cancer, heart attacks and stroke. If you think our hospitals are crowded now, imagine what the wards will be like a few years from now. The sad part is that many baby boomers are planning for long lives, Unless they make changes now, however, they will be sick or disabled for 10 of those years, according to a Heart and Stroke Foundation report released in 2013. Ironically, most boomers think they are healthy but in fact many are stressed, sedentary, eat poorly and drink too much alcohol. Could this be the year Canadians change those statistics and turning this unhealthy ship around? Pass the veggies while we think about it. - Black Press

ere are a few things I’d like to see in B.C. political life in the coming year, but won’t.
An orderly schedule of legislature sittings, one in the spring and one in the fall. I canvassed this topic with Premier Christy Clark in our year-end interview, and got the usual runaround about how it’s always been optional since old Gordon what’s-his-name set the schedule of sittings and elections more than a decade ago. Spring is for the budget and MLAs sit in the fall if they need to discuss legislation. They need to all right, but what governments want to do is ram it through as fast as they can, so that’s what they do. The last couple of years of this have been a sham worthy of a South American banana republic, with three chambers running simulta-
neously and opposition members trying to prepare as they run down the hallways. It leads to mistakes in new laws and adds to the public’s cynicism about the whole business, but it gets things done with minimum exposure of the government to criticism. Stephen Harper would approve. A political debate about real issues, rather than just a competition to score points in an endless election campaign. I appreciate that this is hopelessly naive, but setting aside enough time to consider issues could, at least in theory, lead to that happening occasionally. Certainly the hastily staged mock combat of our legislature today isn’t winning new friends for any political party. The main growth area today is people who have given up on the whole thing.
modern policy to the table than they had in the last one. Remember the big issues in that pillowfight? Me neither. I had to look them up. Health care? Local organic carrots into the hospital food. Forest industry? A job protection commissar to force the mills to stay open. Resource development? They’re for it, unless you’re against it. These guys need a Tony Blair-type makeover. They need to be for something, and they need to leave the past behind.
has to wind up home delivery offers a recent example. Is it really so outrageous for the CEO to suggest that walking to the corner is good exercise? When there’s a 24-hour news cycle to fill, it’s a scandal! How many people know that Canada Post’s unfunded pension liabilities amount to $6.5 billion, as it continues to pay a dwindling workforce to hand out mostly advertising flyers? Should they just keep doing that until they run out of cash? Are taxpayers really expected to maintain another two-tier service that’s only available to selected urban people?
Media that care about more than conflict. News organizations are in bad shape these days, and the competition for a rapidly fragmenting audience is having some ugly effects. One thing that needs to go is obsessive coverage of who’s winning and who’s losing. If the news media are going to be interested mainly in the gaffes and gotcha moments, is it any surprise that’s what politicians try to provide? The Canada Post announcement that it
Facts to go with opinions. Whether it’s the government’s fantasy figures on job creation or the opposition’s arithmetic-challenged child poverty claims, serious problems can’t be understood, much less solved, without defining them accurately. Submitting government advertising to scrutiny by the Auditor General to make sure it is accurate and non-partisan would be a good place to start. YOUR VIEWS
Stay calm and just pass the slower vehicle I am writing this on behalf of our family friend who is in her late 70s and was harassed by a driver on the Mission Bridge Dec. 27 between 4:30 and 5 p.m. There was a driver honking and tailgating the older lady and this made her disoriented. He also phoned the police to report a drunk driver. I’m sure he thought he was doing the right thing, but did this person
have any idea that she was blinded by the headlights of his car and couldn’t see the road properly? She is definitely not a reckless driver or a nighttime driver. Unfortunately, she had to visit her husband who is in a long-term care facility in Abbotsford. This is not an unusual routine for her. It is important to mention that she was on the left lane all the way
from Highway 11 to avoid a lane change at the Cedar Valley connector. If you are in a hurry, why didn’t you just change lanes and pass this person? Isn’t that what we should do? Especially, when it is dark and miserable. Then a police officer followed her home to check on the phone call that was received from the driver. Did the police officer find
her drunk? She was angry and frustrated with the situation. The police officer found no evidence of drunkenness and asked her to check her vision. I hope the people who read this would understand that there are licensed drivers of all ages on the road. As long as the driving is not a threat to you or to others, please take a deep breath and
pass the slow-moving vehicle. I sincerely hope this letter will change the attitude of some drivers. Please take a few extra seconds to think that this lady could be your older mother or your grandmother. Let’s show some kindness, not only for this older person, as it is good for your own well being too. Chandra Stokes Mission
More funding needed for FVHS Waiving hearings won’t cure bigger problems
To place the dilemma facing cat control in Mission into context, one must understand what compassionate animal relations actually means. Then, from the perspective of an informed person who actually cares, the public will embrace needed funding, facilities and appreciate the mammoth job facing volunteers. Sadly, Mission council has perpetuated indifference and has played lip service to being compassionate and presumably informed. Mayor and council are the primary cause of the unwanted cat dilemma, by perpetuating their indifference, a lack of bylaws and funding. This is compounded by often exorbitant veterinarian fees and irresponsible guardians failing to spay, neuter and tattoo, and too many failing to commence an indoor cat regime. Similar to lack of respect afforded seniors over the years, cats fall into the same uncaring realm. In both instances, I have recommended council place borrowing initiatives on a referendum next election. Dog animal control is $300,000. As well, council bought a $250,000 dog pound. Whereas, cat animal control will receive $30,000 (2014) and volunteers make up any difference. This moribund council places little value upon volunteers and the mammoth task dealing with countless strays, feral, lost and unwanted litters, emerging monthly from a very prolific cat breeding population.
There is no fair comparison to the growth of unwanted litters from cats compared to dogs. There is no effective TNR program or veterinarian-led spay and neuter blitzes monthly, to eradicate the excessive population. Coun. Tony Luck wrongly harps upon 40 per cent of Fraser Valley Humane Society (FVHS) budget used as wages. Coun. Jenny Stevens still tries to “ride the white horse” at last minute vain attempts to award an emergency $8,000 one-time supplement, but the only actual visible compassion emanates from Coun. Tilbury who has tried in vain to rally colleagues. Today, we witness my proposal to establish an $85,000 annual budget (FVHS compromised asking $60,000), yet we find the grants committee arbitrarily recommend a $30,000 budget which in the end, council unwisely approved. Equally as bad, we witness council pontificating about FVHS need to improve their operations. Council fail to listen to my years of animal advocacy expertise, and sadly has no idea of the massive suffering by cats, being frozen in this winter environment, and many are meals for coyotes. Yet unwanted cats in Mission must be untrue because Couns. Dave Hensman and Jeff Jewell do not seem to witness any strays on their street. Such foolhardy behaviour. George F. Evens Mission
Wages too high for ferry union workers Re: Managers should take pay cut, Nov. 28 edition. I find reading comments like Lilian’s insulting and annoying as she makes comments without doing any research on the topic before shooting from the hip. She mentions that CEOs and managers have to take a pay cut. What about the union workers? Presently there are more than 900 union employees that are making more than $75,000 per
year in wages with a 100 per cent fully funded benefits plan paid for by the taxpayers. A gift shop cashier is paid $24.49 per hour, ticket attendant at boarding booth, $24.85 per hour, coffee shop attendant, $23.35 per hour, and a third cook, $27.51 per hour. These union employees will also receive pay increases on April 1, 2014, and April 1, 2015. In comparison to the United Steelworkers union contract, a

green chain puller in the sawmill is paid $25.93 per hour and a logging choker man is paid $26.94 per hour. The union rates of pay on BC Ferries are outrageous in comparison to United Steelworkers workers who have jobs that can cause bodily injuries. If ferry management wages have to be frozen, then the B.C. Ferry union workers can do the same. Joe Sawchuk Duncan

The bylaw proposed that public hearings be waived for downtown projects goes against the grain. Perhaps it is true that the only way for the Mission downtown to be revitalized would be if this seemingly undemocratic tactic is adopted. That doesn’t make it right, either, just expedient. But it’s probably 20 years too late for any really meaningful redevelopment of the downtown core and that is a tragedy. It is a tragedy which has its roots in previous councils’ addiction to big mall projects and the photo-ops that those announcements afforded them. To say nothing about the occasional free lunches they provided. Aren’t all those projects pretty, all shiny and new? Sure, unless you consider that to many people that shine is tarnished by all the
now-empty stores and reduced overall employment within Mission that they have caused. As for the downtown, even this unheard of move by Mayor Ted Adlem won’t cure the problems First Avenue has if bigger problems than inconvenient public input aren’t fixed. Such as securing funding for a bypass around the downtown core is absolutely a priority. As well as “gentrifying” the downtown by helping developers buy up smaller properties to build larger stores with medium-rise housing on top of them to create higher density, that will in turn push out the enablers of the street people. There’s my public input, mayor and council. Robert T. Rock Mission

“I’ve lived in this community for 38 years, and this is my third term as a school trustee. When you’ve lived here as long as I have, you want to give back to the community, its schools and the kids. Mission has given me so much,” said Hamilton.

When Steve Sharpe, a long-time Mission resident and Games volunteer offered her a chance to be the Games sport chair, Hamilton jumped at the opportunity. “I think it’s going to be fun. The Games will put Mission on the map when athletes compete at this level and become ambassadors for their communities. These Games can be a stepping stone to higher level competitions,” she said. The Games will require 2,500 volunteers, 1,200 for sports alone. The Games have secured more than 1,000 volunteers already and the push is on for more. To register, potential volunteers can go to www.BCGames.org and follow the prompts to the volunteer signup section. The Games are recruiting volunteers as young as 16.

Hamilton thinks it is important that volunteers get a chance to discover what makes Mission tick. “It’s a great opportunity to meet new people,” she said. “Some people don’t know how to get started as a volunteer, now here is that opportunity.” Criminal record checks are only required for those volunteering in the Games venue management division, Hamilton said, adding that people are needed in all the supporting areas helping the Mission Games, including Whistler, Langley, Pitt Meadows, Hemlock Valley, Abbotsford and Maple Ridge.

Highway closed after Christmas crash A single-vehicle accident on Christmas Day sent four people to hospital, with one being airlifted from the scene on Lougheed Highway, just west of Chester Street. The Scoular family suffered no life-threatening injuries in the crash and have been released from hospital. A Good Samaritan, who only wished to be referred to as Al, was the first on the scene and helped comfort the family, according to media reports. Melanie Scoular said on The Record’s Facebook page that her two sons, five and seven, along with her pregnant 19-year-old daughter will recover.

LOOKING BACK BACK. LOOKING FORWARD. The month of January is named after the Roman god, Janus, the god of gates and doorways, who is usually depicted with two faces, each looking in opposite directions. Just as every doorway looks outward and inward, the month of January looks backward and forward. January is a good time to take stock of how far we’ve come during the previous year and to also look forward to the coming year. Many of us do this with New Year’s resolutions and superficial commitments to lose weight or save money in the coming year. But, if we are to have a successful year, we should do some serious soulsearching, asking ourselves how God would evaluate our previous year. How did we do in the really important areas of our lives? That is, how did we treat our families, friends, and co-workers over the past year? How is our present relationship with God? Are we a better person than we were twelve months ago? If we really want to have a better year this year, why not start by trying to be a better person. As Gandhi so rightly said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” And to do this, it really requires more than just thinking back on the previous year and looking forward to the coming one. We need to have a plan with a direction, and firm resolve as we cross the threshold into the New Year.
Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for God is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. R.S.V. Philippians 2:12-13

1 teacher at Abbotsford’s John Maclure Community School, the buzz building up to the BC Games evokes memories of her own athletic career. “When I was competing, every store had a sign in the window – ‘Mission’s Olympian, Eden Donatelli,’” she recalled. “I felt very supported by this community. It’s great to see – I have that feeling again, how everybody is rallying around.” At the same time, the BC Games have given Eden a new appreciation for how much work it takes to put together an event of such magnitude.
“Now, I can see what a huge, huge undertaking it is – I can’t even imagine the scope of putting together an Olympic Games,” she marveled. “We’ve had a lot of fun working together as a team, getting to know a lot of the other people in Mission. There’s a lot of major volunteer people who are just a great resource for the community. I think that’s what it’s really creating – a resource base of volunteers in our community.” Janie is one of three speed-skating Green kids – Annabelle is 11, and Samuel is nine. Eden said she gets more nervous watching her kids and the

Eden Donatelli Green was a national team competitor for Canada in the 1980s. SUBMITTED athletes from her clubs compete than she ever did as an athlete. The Zone 3 qualifier, in particular, was a nail-biter. “I was more nervous for the qualifier than I’ve ever been before,” she admitted with a chuckle. “I don’t know if it’s because I’m so closely involved that it really matters to me that my kids go, or if it’s because my child was actually competing for a spot. But I was a bit of a basket case.” Eden believes the BC Games will be a
tremendous learning experience for her athletes. “This is the first time they’ve really had to skate with that much pressure, where that much is on the line,” she said. “They’ve known for a couple years that this was coming, that they would be eligible, and it’s a big stepping stone for them. “I see them determined, they’re excited, and they’re training harder. They have a goal in mind.”

Male likely died of overdose: RCMP No foul play is suspected in the death of a man found in a wooded area off the Lougheed Highway Monday afternoon. Police and paramedics were called to the scene, near Stave Lake Street, around 4 p.m. on Dec. 30 to assist an unresponsive male. “The male was quickly confirmed as deceased,” said Mission RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright. “There was a makeshift shelter located near the body and it appears that the deceased had been camping at that location.” Wright also noted there were no signs of trauma on the body and police believe the man’s death was likely the result of a drug overdose. An autopsy will be conducted to confirm the cause of death. The victim was in his 30s and from the Mission area, according to police, who are not releasing his name until next of kin has been notified.
New light at Cedar and Seventh Christmas came early for Mayor Ted Adlem when the left-turn lights at Cedar Street and Seventh Avenue became operational Dec. 16. Adlem, who lives in the neighbourhood, had been championing for improvements to that intersection for months. It is the second-highest crash location in Mission, behind the Lougheed Highway and Cedar Valley Connector intersection. According to a staff report last month, the extra lights cost about $35,000.

ATTENTION The communities of Mission and Matsqui should be aware that the City of Chilliwack is planning to build a PCB and mercury recycling plant on the south bank of the Fraser River only a few kilometers upstream. To learn of this location is surprising to say the least. Why would the City of Chilliwack put such a useful and necessary recycling facility in a more counter productive location. It’s ironic that they would go to such lengths to handle and recycle these toxic carcinogens in an incredibly dangerous location concerning Àsh, wildlife, and the very water we consume, to protect us! If there was ever a Áood(1948), even if it was built above Áood plain level, or there was an earthquake, it would jeopardize the largest salmon spawning river in the world. Why Chilliwack council chose this location, has probably something to do with money, whatever the reason, it wasn’t well thought out. Surely there’s another location that would be more suitable other than the banks of the river that drains 70 percent of the Province. How about near where PCB’s are produced and used, and make those who produce and use them be responsible for disposing of them, that would make sense.

Mission’s Carly Rae Jepsen will be hitting the Broadway stage as Cinderella in February. For 12 weeks beginning Feb. 4, Jepsen will be dancing in the glass slippers in Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella in New York. She made the announcement Sunday night on Facebook, “Sooooo… I’m ready to spill my NYC secret. I am going to be playing Cinderella on Broadway starting Feb. 4th! Dream come true.” She will be joined by Fran Drescher, who plays Cinderella’s stepmother. While the 28-yearold pop star earned international fame for her hit song Call Me Maybe, she grew up performing on the Clarke Theatre stage in productions of Annie, Grease and The Wiz with Heritage Park Secondary School.

Reintje (Van Dyk) June 7, 1923 ~ Dec. 18, 2013
It is with sadness, but also joy that we announce the passing of our Mom, Oma, sister and aunt into the Lord’s everlasting arms on December 18, 2013 at the age of 90. Born in Wapenveld, Holland, she married Geerhard Olthuis on November 30th, 1949 and immigrated to Canada in 1950, living in Edmonton and raising their five children. After 28 years they moved to Abbotsford, BC. She is survived by her five children, John (Julia), Ben (Alice), Bill (Diane), Anita (Rob), Johnny (Beverly), 21 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, her sister Henny (Jack) and brother John (Paula). Predeceased by her husband Geerhard in 2004 and 3 siblings. We would like to thank the staff at Tabor Court and Home, where she enjoyed living for the last five years. Also a thank you to the ACE unit at ARH. The internment was held at Musselwhite, and the Memorial Service was held at the Free Reformed Church on December 24th.
Harold passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Surrey Memorial Hospital after completing 92 years of life. He is survived by his daughters Val Wright and Beverley (Perry) Korness and son Keith (Corinna), brotherin-law Herbert Jenkin, sisterin-law Ann, several cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 62 years, Bernice (nee Jenkin) and brothers Avard and Lloyd. Harold was born in West St. Andrews, NS and grew up in Stewiacke, NS. He served as a Staff Sargent based in Halifax during WW II. After the war he moved to BC and while working at the Workers Compensation Board in Vancouver he met and married Bernice in 1948. They lived in Richmond and raised their family. Harold retired from the WCB as a Statistical Supervisor in 1981. He and Bernice spent the first part of their retirement years travelling by RV to Mexico, across Canada and throughout the USA. They continued to travel after moving to Abbotsford in 1989. Harold loved to dance. He joined the Senior’s Center and lite up the dance floor every Friday night for many years. When Bernice passed in 2011, he moved to Langley where he spent the remainder of his life. He will be greatly missed by his family. No service or flowers by his request.
