When Mike Hopcraft opened his reptile rescue, education, and sales centre in Abbotsford in November 2012, he had eight redeared slider turtles in the large artificial pond. The Reptile Guy now has over 70 as people keep depositing their unwanted turtles – as well as lizards, snakes, tarantulas, and any other cold-blooded creature – on his doorstep. “These are the ones that people buy when they’re little tiny turtles in pet stores, about the size of a quarter, and people don’t realize how long they live, how big they get, how dirty they are,” said Hopcraft. Snow & Ice Control The goal of the City’s Snow and Ice Control Program is to maintain travel routes where there is snow and ice on roads and restore mobility for the traveling public. Our roads are classi¿ed: • ¿rst priority (high volume and strategic arterial and collector roads, and major access roads to hillside areas); • second priority (remaining arterial, hillside areas and collector routes); and • third priority (remaining roadways not identi¿ed as ¿rst and second priority). First priority roads are maintained until conditions are under control subject to worker/equipment availability and weather. Only then are resources redirected to second priority routes and subsequently third priority routes. The City of Abbotsford, which takes a pro-active approach to snow and ice control, operates three anti-icing units (tanks containing sodium chloride solution) on four-lane roads and rural priority roads. The units are used to spray road surfaces before and during a storm. Anti-icing helps keep roads ice free and improves snow removal. Several pre-wetting units, which inject liquid sodium chloride into the salt/sand mixture before it is applied to roads, are also used by the City. These units increase the melting of snow and ice, and reduce the loss of salt/sand caused by traf¿c.

The City does not remove snow and ice to bare pavement conditions. The public is encouraged to use caution, and wherever possible, park vehicles off the streets. Abandoned vehicles or vehicles obstructing roadways will be towed without notice to allow for snow clearing operations to continue and towing costs will be the responsibility of the vehicle owners. It’s not too early to begin preparing for the heating season. Check these 10 tips and get ahead of the winter freeze. • Furnace has been inspected and serviced by a quali¿ed professional during the last 12 months. (Furnace should be serviced at least once a year.) • Chimneys and vents have been cleaned and inspected by a quali¿ed professional. Checked for creosote build-up. (Not cleaning the chimney is the leading cause of chimney ¿res from built up creosote. This service needs to be done at least once a year.) • Wood for ¿replace or wood stove is dry, seasoned wood. • Fireplace screen is metal or heat-tempered glass, in good condition and secure in its position in front of the ¿replace. • A covered metal container ready to use to dispose cooled ashes. (The ash container should be kept at least 10 feet from the home and any nearby buildings.) • Children know to stay at least 3 feet away from the ¿replace, wood/pellet stove, oil stove or other space heaters. • Portable space heaters have an automatic shut-off. • Portable space heaters will be plugged directly into an outlet (not an extension cord) and placed at least three feet from anything that can burn; like bedding, paper, walls, and even people. (Place notes throughout your home to remind you to turn-off portable heaters when you leave a room or go to bed.) • We have tested our smoke alarms and made sure they are working. (You need a smoke alarm on every level of the home, inside each bedroom and outside each sleeping area. For the best protection, the smoke alarms should be interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound.) • Tested the carbon monoxide alarms and made sure they are working. (Carbon monoxide alarms should be located outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home.)

Traffic fatalities tripled homicides in Abbotsford in 2013, with six people dying in traffic-related incidents, while only two were victims of murder – down from a record high of 11 in 2009. In February, 40-year-old Leanne Friesen died of gunshot wounds. Her estranged husband has been charged with her murder, and is out on bail while awaiting trial. In June, 25-year-old Harpreet Chahal died in a drive-by shooting on South Fraser Way. Chahal was a known associate of Jujhar Khun-Khun, who has been charged with the killing of Jonathan Bacon, a Red Scorpion gang member who used to live in Abbotsford. But in 2013, Abbotsford police count six traffic-related deaths, including two pedestrians killed by vehicles, three deaths in motor vehicle accidents, and one cyclist killed after losing control of the bike. Counted among the pedestrian deaths is Shaminder Brar, who was the apparent victim of a hit-and-run in February, though police do not have definitive answers in the case. Const. Ian MacDonald said that traditionally, traffic-related deaths are always higher than murders, except for in 2009, when there were six traffic deaths and 11 murders in Abbotsford. MacDonald said that following the city’s

There were no murders in 2011 and three in 2012. MacDonald said that controlling homicide rates is “not a perfect science, especially when you are dealing with some variables that are difficult to crack.” He said a certain percentage of homicides will be related to domestic situations, or private disputes among people who know each other. “There are certain conflicts that regrettably will become violent.” He said from a policing perspective, they must focus on reducing public safety risks, which includes making Abbotsford a diffi-

But MacDonald added that drug dealers and gangsters go where the money is, and do not take note of different jurisdictions. “You can never rest easy with anything that’s going on. As long as there are gangs, and conflict over money and drugs and other commodities … you always have to be on guard and you always have to be vigilant.” While Abbotsford’s murder rate is much lower than its peak, Surrey surpassed its record of 22 in November. At year’s end, the city had 25 murder victims. In response to the homicide rates, Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts struck a special task force to examine drug houses and the impact of mental illness on crime and violence rates, and correspondingly, police resources. MacDonald said that when a city experiences high homicide rates, it is not a time for blame, but for increased community engagement in public safety. He said from the APD’s experience, it is important to get the community in support of the police to help combat high murder rates. In order to keep murder rates low in 2014, APD plans to “stay the course,” and remain vigilant in gang suppression efforts. But as in 2013, APD plans to focus on road safety this year, with continued efforts to educate and address the root causes of traffic-related incidents.

With the many reptile surrenders, Hopcraft has outgrown his new 1,300sq.ft. facility in the first year. But he won’t stop accepting animals. Instead, he is fundraising $75,000 for a new building where he will construct a “gigantic turtle pond” and much larger enclosures to welcome all stranded reptiles. For instance, his mean-looking snapping turtle named Muffin is about a foot in diameter now but will grow to 150 pounds, as will the two giant tortoises roaming a small sandy pen at the current site. All need larger and separate enclosures. “This is not going to do for much longer at all. We got 240 animals in the first year. We’re not looking to close down anytime soon, so the animals are going to keep coming in. We need a bigger space,” he said. Only a handful of rescue facilities accept reptiles in the Lower Mainland. “Once it was known that we had an actual location and more people started finding out about us, the number of animals coming in just went right up,” said
Hopcraft. The reptile industry is growing rapidly, he says, but knowledge of how to care for the animals and what to expect as they grow is still lacking. Hopcraft accepts reptiles no questions asked, and frequently receives animals sick and disabled after basic care wasn’t fol-

He recognizes he’s unlikely to meet the hefty price tag through this campaign alone, as supporters have pledged just $525 by Dec. 31, with 13 campaign days remaining. Hopcraft is no stranger to the uphill financial battle. He shut down his previous rescue site in 2011 after new government regulations prohibited him from displaying his animals and dried up his
revenue source. Last year, he opened the current site after heavy public campaigning. He is determined to find the funds for a new building, especially as he risks losing ownership of his American alligator and two Burmese pythons. Because Hopcraft doesn’t have a large enough space, another agency is on contract until May 2014 to house these exotic animals. But it’s unclear what will happen by that deadline if Hopcraft is unable to meet the requirements to reclaim them. His long-term goal is to obtain a zoo licence and have the facility as a full-time education and visitor centre. He already takes his reptiles to schools, but the current space is too small to accommodate student groups. He is also trying to reduce the number of reptiles that end up in bad homes. People can adopt some of his animals, but – like the SPCA – only if they meet strict requirements, and not everyone does. In an effort to reduce the slider population in Abbotsford, Hopcraft unsuccessfully campaigned city council last summer to restrict their sale because the turtle has become an invasive and destructive species in city parks and ponds.

A body found New Year’s Day on Whatcom Road in Abbotsford has been confirmed to be that of missing woman Erica Schmidt. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said Schmidt’s body was retrieved from a dense brush area in the 2100 block of Whatcom Road, where it had apparently been for some time. MacDonald said police received a call just before midnight on New Year’s Eve from someone who believed they had seen a body in the area. Police sent out search crews, including a K9 unit, but were unable to find anything in the dark. MacDonald said a patrol officer who walked the area the following morning located Schmidt at about 9 a.m. Members of the patrol division, forensic
identification unit, and major crime unit gathered evidence on the scene, and foul play was ruled out. On the morning of Oct. 5, Schmidt left the home she shared with her husband, Henry, near Old Yale Road and Whatcom Road. An official multi-day search was launched, and family friend Mark Henter coordinated a volunteer effort to assist. Dozens of volunteers scoured city streets to distribute “missing person” flyers. On Oct. 17, police released a video clip that showed Schmidt walking in the 2400 block of McCallum Road just hours after she had been reported missing. The “Help Find Erica!” Facebook page posted continuous updates. Her family held a press conference on Nov. 7, appealing to the public for new information. At the time, they said she had suffered from depression in the past and
had been going through a difficult time. MacDonald said the community showed “amazing levels of support” during the missing person investigation. “The Abbotsford Police Department and the Schmidt family would like to thank everyone who showed support and provided assistance along the way,” he said. A memorial marker has been placed near the site on Whatcom Road where Schmidt was found. The family has said it will soon post a list on Facebook of Schmidt’s favourite charities so that people who wish to do so can donate funds in her memory. Schmidt and her husband, a Bible school teacher, made many friends during their travels around the world to places such as Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, the U.S. and Nepal. Schmidt is survived by Henry; their three children, Amy, Sophia, and Michael; and three young grandchildren.

Do not dial 911 to ask for a morning wake-up call. Or to discipline your children. Or to ask permission to use the HOV lane to get to an important meeting. Those are a few fresh examples of jaw-droppingly inappropriate 911 calls made by Lower Mainland residents in 2013 that offer strong evidence some people can’t discern what’s a real emergency. The list was released this week by E-Comm and is just a taste of what staff regularly field at southwestern B.C.’s emergency communications centre. In the number one spot this year was a call E-Comm’s Matthew Collins received from a caller wanting to rent a fire truck to block off a street for a party. “My son won’t give me the remote control,” another caller reported as an emergency to a 911 call-taker. “Can an officer come over to tell my kids to go to bed?” asked another. E-Comm spokesperson Jody Robertson said people who make nuisance calls to 911 are tying up valuable resources for people with real lifeand-death emergencies. “There are many documented cases of children as young as two and three years old properly making emergency calls,” she said. “Little ones seem to get it. Others among us seem to require
a bit more help.” Robertson wasn’t able to say how many of the 2,500 daily emergency calls fall into the nuisance category but added far too many calls come in seeking information about power outages, what time it is, when to turn clocks back or about local or international events. “It happens way too many times and it happens every single day.” Robertson said the one she found remarkable was the caller who asked for the OK to drive in the HOV lane because traffic was backed up and they were late for a meeting. “I appreciate them asking permission but you’ve really got to ask yourself if it’s that important that you would dial 911 and potentially take a 911 call operator’s time away from someone in serious need.” She said it was “sadly” difficult to narrow the list of absurd reasons down to just 10. A huge problem for E-Comm remains pocket dials by cellphone users or calls otherwise made in error. About 100,000 of those calls come in each year or nearly 10 per cent of total volume. Some people quickly hang up when they realize they dialed 911 by mistake. “That’s actually the worst thing you can do,” Robertson said, adding call takers must then make repeated attempts to call you back to make sure there’s no emergency.

Abbotsford AbbotsfordNews News Friday, Friday, January January 3, 2014 Kudos to Matsqui dairy farmer, Steve Van Der Loos, for keeping alive the looming dyke and river bank issues of not only Matsqui, but many areas of the upper Fraser Valley. We all know exactly what has to be done, but yet, as frustratingly asserted by Mr. Van Der Loos, no one authority wants to take responsibility, so nothing gets done. Surely, we are not going to wait for the impending catastrophe, that would cost us an economy-changing amount of capital, at the time, and far into the future. If one was to wrap their brain around the situation, solving the problem wouldn’t take anymore engineering, the equipment needed is well available, and so is all the material. So why then, is any level

of government afraid to take on the challenge? Surely, an intelligent government could accumulate existing resources and re-prioritize its already contracted services to pay for the lion’s share of probably the most necessary economic and disaster protection project in the Fraser Valley. It would be actually easier for the governments of the day to deal with this crucially important issue, than the way they are handling it now. has used the increased MSP revenues to offset the long-term growth of health care costs, which are approaching half of the total provincial budget. Finance Minister Mike de Jong’s 2013 budget projected health spending to increase 2.3 per cent in the current fiscal year, 2.7 per cent in the year beginning April 1
and only 2.2 per cent the following year. The government’s critics called that unrealistic after years of increases of more than five per cent. The CTF reports that Canada Pension Plan and Employment Insurance payments are also going up for many people, despite a federal government pledge to freeze EI premiums for
three years. In its report, it calculates that maximum EI premiums will go up $23 in 2014, totalling $914 for the year. The maximum employee Canada Pension Plan deduction, charged to those earning $52,500 or more, goes up $70 to $2,426. Employers match employee CPP payments dollar for dollar.

Winter holidays are a time for families and friends to get together. But that also means a greater risk for ¿re. Following a few simple tips will ensure a happy and ¿re-safe holiday season. Holiday Decorating • Be careful with holiday decorations. Choose decorations that are Àame resistant or Àame retardant. • Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn. • Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both. • Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of mini light sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of LED strands to connect. • Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged. • Keep decorations away from windows and doors. Holiday Entertaining • Test your smoke alarms and tell guests about your home ¿re escape plan. • Keep children and pets away from lit candles. • Keep matches and lighters up high in a locked cabinet. • Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop. • Ask smokers to smoke outside. Remind smokers to keep their smoking materials with them so young children do not touch them. • Provide large, deep ashtrays for smokers. Wet cigarette butts with water before discarding. Christmas Tree Safety • Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. • Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 1-2” from the base of the trunk. • Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like ¿replaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. • Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit. • Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily. • Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use. • Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Civil forfeiture claim targets Abby home Alleged to have been purchased from crime proceeds Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
An Abbotsford home and property is the subject of a civil forfeiture claim in B.C. Supreme Court, with the provincial government alleging the residence was paid for with the proceeds of crime. The claim also seeks to obtain nearly $25,000 that was seized by the Abbotsford Police Department during a search of the home on Nov. 14. The home in question is located in the 32000 block of Maclure Road and has been registered since March 27, 2013 to Hang Bich Thuy Do, who resided there and is the spouse of Binh Van Nguyen, according to court documents. The claim alleges that the pair used the proceeds from the sale of illegal drugs by Nguyen to make mortgage payments, pay property taxes, and contribute to property improvements and maintenance costs. Nguyen was arrested in Abbotsford on Nov. 13 and has been
charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. A search warrant was executed at the Maclure Road home, and police seized almost $24,000 in Canadian funds and $665 in U.S. funds. A second search was done of a basement suite, which was rented by Nguyen on Curlew Road. That search turned up more than 300
rocks of crack cocaine, 17 bags of powdered cocaine, more than 200 bags of heroin, and digital scales. The civil forfeiture claim alleges that the Maclure Road property was used to traffic the drugs and to launder the proceeds of crime. Under the B.C. Civil Forfeiture Act, the provincial government can apply to obtain property – such as homes and vehicles – that was obtained
through criminal activity. If a judge decides the property must be forfeited, it can then be sold and the proceeds used by the government for victim compensation, crime prevention activities, crime remediation activities, and administration of the act. A date for the civil forfeiture court proceedings involving the Maclure Road property has not yet been set.

Leadership students show community spirit Yale Secondary School leadership students put their imaginations to work recently to find ways to give back to the community. One endeavour was to fill gift bags with tuques, socks, scarves and hygiene products such as toothbrushes, deodorant, etc. for those less fortunate. More than 40 bags were assembled and distributed at the Salvation Army Dec. 21. The students also sold pizzas at lunch for the Claus Cares event, and used the funds to buy gifts for sick children in the hospital. Student Quinn Sojonky donned a Santa Claus suit and gave gifts to children at Abbotsford Regional Hospital Monday. The rest of the group behind this effort included Andria Johnson, Sheradyn Quast, Anna Holota and Samyta Rai.

The Abbotsford Arts Council announces its first show of 2014 at the Kariton Art Gallery. “The Best Most Fun Kids Art Show EVER!” features the artwork of students of 4Cats Arts Studio Abbotsford. The show will present a wide range of paintings by local youth, many of which are inspired by artists the children have studied, such as Vincent Van Gogh, Gustav Klimt, Claude Monet, Jackson Pollock, and more. 4Cats is a professional arts studio franchise where children ages two to 15 can grow their ability to see and think like an artist. The studio name is inspired by the 4Cats Cafe in Barcelona, Spain, where Pablo Picasso went with artist, poet and philosopher friends to discuss art and life and make and show his art. At 4Cats, kids take inspiration from the great masters of art and create their own using professional art materials. “The Best Most Fun Kids Art Show EVER!” will run from Jan. 10 to Feb. 4 at the Kariton Art Gallery, 2387 Ware St. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Friday from noon to 5 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The artists will be present at an opening reception on Sunday, Jan. 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. Non-perishable food items for the Abbotsford Food Bank will be accepted at the Kariton Art Gallery throughout the exhibition. With the City of Abbotsford’s help, the raised funds will be used to provide each park with an area for small dogs, an area for large dogs, water and shelter. Bosley’s Abbotsford is planning to continue fundraising in the New Year to help fence other potential Off Leash Dog Parks that will benefit the Abbotsford dog community and provide our dogs a safe and fun place to play and run. to a silver medal at the Junior World Trophy tourney in Chile. “I was working hard, and I guess I got a little more recognized for my skills and talents, and I got a big shot in October and November. Now, they’re going to start
putting me on a (development) plan so that in another two or three years when they need me again, I’ll be ready to sub or hopefully start.” March plays for the Abbotsford Rugby Football Club’s top men’s team, works in the
plumbing department at Home Depot and more or less lives at the gym when he’s not at work. He stands 6’3” and weighs 245 pounds, but the national team coaches want him to pack on an additional 10 to 12 pounds of mus-
cle because he’s a little small for a prop at the international level. “Just being with the (national) team, my skills all-around have improved a lot,” he said. “The coaches have shown me what I need to do better.”

The last couple months of 2013 basically amounted to an epic rugby field trip for Abbotsford native Ryan March. In October, the 20-yearold tighthead prop out of Abbotsford’s Robert Bateman Secondary was summoned for his first stint with the Canadian senior men’s national 15s team, and he got into a game vs. the United States during the Americas Rugby Championship tourney in Langford, B.C. March performed well enough there to earn an invitation on a four-game international tour which began
on Nov. 3 in Toronto vs. the New Zealand Maori All Blacks. Canada lost 40-15, but the crowd of 22,566 was the largest in Canadian and North American rugby history. From there, the tour continued to Europe for a trio of fixtures – the Canadians fell to Georgia and Portugal, and picked up a win vs. Romania. March, the youngest front-row player on the squad, didn’t make it off the bench in any of the four games on the tour, which means he’s still looking for his first official International Rugby Board (IRB) cap. But the trip was nevertheless an incredible learning experience for the youngster, who will likely figure more prominently

Newcomer Foster aims to make impact with Heat AHL club hosts Hamilton this weekend Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
When you really dig into it, the parallels between Krys Kolanos and Adrian Foster are quite striking. Both players were firstround NHL draft choices who were sidetracked by injuries early in their careers. Kolanos, the 19th overall selection by the Phoenix Coyotes in 2000, was derailed by concussion issues; Foster, taken 28th overall by the New Jersey Devils in 2001, played just 39 regular season games over the course of four WHL campaigns due to nagging abdominal issues, and later endured his own concussion battle. Both players went on to journeyman careers that included stints overseas, and both crossed paths with current Abbotsford Heat head coach Troy Ward with the AHL’s Houston Aeros. And as of Monday, when Foster signed a professional tryout (PTO) contract with the Heat, both can say they’ve reunited with Ward in Abbotsford. Kolanos, of course, carved out an improbable comeback story over the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, parlaying a training camp tryout into a contract from the Heat and an eventual 13-game stint with the Calgary Flames. He’s the Heat’s all-time leading goalscorer with 48. Foster, a 31-year-old Lethbridge native summoned from the ECHL’s San Francisco Bulls, can only hope to replicate Kolanos’s out-of-nowhere impact with the Heat. But reflecting on his AHL opportunity following Tuesday’s practice, he was less focused on individual goals and more concerned with fitting in with a high-flying

The University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team spent the last few days of 2013 in Windsor, Ont., where they dropped two of three games at the Lancers Holiday Classic tournament. Both of the Cascades’ losses came against the host Windsor Lancers, w h o have won three straight CIS national titles and are currently ranked No. 2 in the nation. No. 7-ranked UFV fell 66-39 in their first game of the tourney on Dec. 28, with the Lancers breaking the game open with a 17-2 run in the second quarter. The Cascades bounced back for an 82-66 win over the Guelph Gryphons the next day, behind 16 points from Sarah Wierks. On Dec. 30, UFV got another crack at the Lancers, and the rematch was much closer throughout than the 63-43 final score might suggest. The Cascades trailed by just six points heading into the fourth quarter, before Windsor pulled away down the stretch. Q The UFV men’s hoopsters were in Phoenix, Ariz. for the Maricopa County Holiday Classic, but with a roster of just six players available, they dropped all three games. The Cascades got seven three-pointers from Manny Dulay in their opener vs. the Cochise College Apaches, but dropped a close 63-58 decision. They followed with defeats to South Mountain Community College (89-79) and the Phoenix College Bears (81-61). The Cascades basketball teams open the second half of the Canada West regular season on Jan. 10 at the University of Winnipeg.

On the morning of December 23, 2013, Vivian peacefully passed away. She will be remembered fondly and missed by her daughter, Gayle, son-in-law, Bill Horie, grandchildren, Shelley and Heath Patterson, and greatgranddaughters, Anika, Cadence, Jane and Molly and her many friends. Born in Frontier, Saskatchewan on February 8, 1925, she was the youngest of 17 children. She married Patrick on August 23, 1945 and was a homemaker and served alongside Patrick as a military and pastor’s wife, and lived the life of many moves and constant change. She enjoyed knitting, oil painting and one of her favourite past-times was the word search. With her adaptability, organization skills intelligence, words of wisdom and willingness to do what needed to be done, she was a beautiful, extraordinary woman and she impacted the lives of everyone she came into contact with. A memorial service will be held at Huckleberry House Church, 2455 West Railway Street, Abbotsford on January 11, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Inspire Health.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 37 years Clive on January 13, 2013 and her parents Ben and Agnes, brothers Jake and Ernie and sister Elma. It is with sadness, but also joy that we announce the passing of our Mom, Oma, sister and aunt into the Lord’s everlasting arms on December 18, 2013 at the age of 90. Born in Wapenveld, Holland, she married Geerhard Olthuis on November 30th, 1949 and immigrated to Canada in 1950, living in Edmonton and raising their five children. After 28 years they moved to Abbotsford, BC. She is survived by her five children, John (Julia), Ben (Alice), Bill (Diane), Anita (Rob), Johnny (Beverly), 21 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, her sister Henny (Jack) and brother John (Paula). Predeceased by her husband Geerhard in 2004 and 3 siblings. We would like to thank the staff at Tabor Court and Home, where she enjoyed living for the last five years. Also a thank you to the ACE unit at ARH. The internment was held at Musselwhite, and the Memorial Service was held at the Free Reformed Church on December 24th.

Harold passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Surrey Memorial Hospital after completing 92 years of life. He is survived by his daughters Val Wright and Beverley (Perry) Korness and son Keith (Corinna), brotherin-law Herbert Jenkin, sisterin-law Ann, several cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 62 years, Bernice (nee Jenkin) and brothers Avard and Lloyd. Harold was born in West St. Andrews, NS and grew up in Stewiacke, NS. He served as a Staff Sargent based in Halifax during WW II. After the war he moved to BC and while working at the Workers Compensation Board in Vancouver he met and married Bernice in 1948. They lived in Richmond and raised their family. Harold retired from the WCB as a Statistical Supervisor in 1981. He and Bernice spent the first part of their retirement years travelling by RV to Mexico, across Canada and throughout the USA. They continued to travel after moving to Abbotsford in 1989. Harold loved to dance. He joined the Senior’s Center and lite up the dance floor every Friday night for many years. When Bernice passed in 2011, he moved to Langley where he spent the remainder of his life. He will be greatly missed by his family. No service or flowers by his request.
