Emergency service workers had a quiet Christmas Day in the Alberni Valley. The Port Alberni Fire Department had few calls on

Dec. 25. “There were a couple of minor calls, people who were sick, but there was no property loss or damage,” Capt. Peter Aspinall said. It’s been relatively quiet at this time for the last few years, he said. “We haven’t had to respond

to anything major on Christmas Day for some time now,” Aspinall said. At the Port Alberni RCMP detachment, officers responded to five calls on Christmas Day and a few more that night, Cpl. Colin Banks said. The incidents weren’t of the

run-of-the-mill Christmas variety. “There were no Christmas Day fights or arguments that ended up with trees thrown into the front yard,” Banks said. And BC Ambulance attendants in Port Alberni responded to six calls on Christmas Day, unit chief Bruce Patterson said.

Port Alberni’s Bottle Depot has moved a block and a half down Fourth Avenue into the building vacated by PY Marine, beside Southside Auto at Bute Street. But it’s miles ahead in terms of comfort, says manager Nadine Thibeau. The bottle depot moved from its former location about a week before Christmas. While the new location is about the same size in square footage, the layout is much more efficient, Thibeau said. The building is heated, well lit and the sorting area is larger. “It’s just a nicer building for us to be in,” she said of the six full- and parttime employees. “It’s heated and it will probably keep some

of the wasps away in the summer.” The new depot is more modern,

with three conveyor belts connecting the front desk to the rear, so plastic

boxes of returnables can be sent safely to the back. The old account book will be computerized as well, so people will have to get used to letting staff know before they tally their returnables which account they are to go towards. “Now we have a spot to do bottle drives under cover,” Thibeau added. “Which is a big, big bonus.” Bottle depot owner Don Thompson has been looking for another location for quite a while, Thibeau said. The new building became available when PY Marine relocated to part of the former Zellers complex, at Third Avenue and Mar Street. The bottle depot still has the same operating hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. editor@albernivalleynews.com

Not even The Grinch Who Stole Christmas would pull something like this. A thief stole Christmas cash from the Salvation Army kettle campaign. The incident happened on Christmas eve shortly

after 12:30 a.m. RCMP responded to a call of an alarm at the Salvation Army Thrift store on Third Avenue, Cpl. Colin Banks said. Officers found the store’s door ajar and the red Salvation Army collection kettle laying on the floor with the clear plastic cash bowl and an undetermined amount

of cash inside it gone. “It looks as though the kettle was visible through the front door. Someone walking by likely saw it, kicked the door in and grabbed it,” Banks said. No fingerprints were found on the kettle. Officers will continue their investigation though on Friday. The incident adds

The man accused of running down a local police officer twice within a minute earlier this year, has been freed on bail. Richard Parlby, 45,

was already out on bail for possessing child pornography and restricted weapons. When police went to arrest him on breaching bail conditions on Sept. 24, he fled, running over a police officer and a

civilian in the Walmart parking lot. Parlby turned himself into police two days later, and has been held in jail ever since. Parlby must return to Port Alberni court on Jan. 16.

She was born at West Coast General Hospital on Jan. 1 at 7:27 p.m. On Jan. 3 at North Island College, an Idle No More flash mob event attracted more than 125 people. Alberni resident Richard Pesik said he hopes the movement doesn’t fracture the same way the Occupy movement did earlier last year. “It became about many different things and it died. I hope that doesn’t happen with this,” he said. Alberni wrestlers were successful at the end of 2012 at the War on the Floor tournament at Simon Fraser University. They won three gold medals and five silver medals in the Novice Tournament. In the Elite Tournament, they got two silver medals and two bronze medals as well. This is the first year for Totem 58, the venerable basketball tournament, in the new high school on Roger Street. Both Armada senior girls and boys practiced very hard. “The excitement has been build all week at the new school and there is going to be as much (spirit) as there ever was,” tournament coordinator, Brian Laviolette said.

But we have to take the emotion out of this and do what’s best for the school district,” School District 70 chairperson Larry Ransom said. Kaylum Doherty, the Port Alberni boy who survived a cougar attack in summer 2012, received an award for bravery and special recognition by the BC Conservation Service. Doherty’s father Rick and lady friend Bobi Jo Schaefer were also presented with bravery awards. “I remember when the cougar grabbed me and bit me. I was breathing really hard in the ambulance,” Kaylum said. The BC Court of Appeal has ordered a new trial for Kim Winslow Roghtgordt, the Port Alberni man convicted or murdering a male nurse in 2008. In other court news, one of two youths involved in an assault that left Port Alberni fisherman Bert McCarthy with a broken leg in August 2012 pleaded guilty to common assault and was sentenced to one year’s probation. The Tropic Ice Hockey team from Russia announced it would play in Parksville, Duncan and Campbell River in addition to Port Alberni from April 5–9. The team was slated to play a crack oldtimers squad from Port Alberni in April. The plan had roots in the friendship between Jim Lawson and Russian interpreter Oleg Norchenko during the World Under-17 Hockey Championship in Port Alberni in 2009. Gaelle Frey, the straight-spoken critic of school closure in SD70, was elected as a school board trustee, taking 206 out of 694 votes in a Feb. 16 byelection. City councillors and staff were still mired in budget meetings. Councillors cut and slashed and managed to wrestle the tax rate down to 11.5 per cent from the 13.7 per cent that was originally proposed. The Port Alberni SPCA’s A-B-C Spay and Neuter program for dogs and cats was working overtime. The program tamped down what was beginning to be a dog and cat overpopulation problem, SPCA Manager Irene Towell said. “When you have to transfer 300 cats

ISC planned to bring in a the 44-metre trawler Raw Spirit, which would use the shed to regularly offload its 72,000 pound catch every 10 days. March Alberni-Pacific Rim MLA Scott Fraser wondered aloud whether the apology to the Hesquiaht was a test-run for the BC Liberal “Multicultural Strategy”, a scheme

that called for “quick wins”, such as making apologies for historical wrongs to other ethnic groups. Former B.C. Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ida Chong, who delivered the apology, quickly defended the apology’s sincerity, but didn’t deny that it was part of the strategy. City sewer rates went into the toilet after city councillors voted to hike rates by 50 per cent, translating into $134 more on residential utility bills. And residents could also expect to pay eight per cent more in residential taxes this year. And Ramji Dass, a patriarch in Port Alberni’s South Asian community, got a special present for his 90th birthday - a plaque signed by BC Premier Christy Clark. “This is quite a milestone for you, as you reflect on all that you have done and all that you have experienced over the years,” Clark wrote. Time to walk the money talk Is it too much to wish for list in 2014? The City of Port Alberni’s budget has been a target of dissatisfaction and even contempt over the past year. Now it is time for the naysayers to put their money where their collective opinions are, and get involved in the public process. City council will hold a special meeting on Monday, Jan. 6 (6 p.m. in council chambers) to hear presentations from agencies that receive funding from the city. This is open to the public. So is a meeting slated for Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. at Echo Centre, designed to give the public an overview of the city’s departments and the services the public receives from the city. Questions are welcome. Another public meeting, Monday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. at Echo Centre, will allow members of the public to give more specific input to the Five Year Financial Plan 2014–2018. The budget process has already begun, with departments starting to consider what they want to ask for in the five-year plan. Department heads will make their wish lists public starting Wednesday, Feb. 5. The schedule will be listed on the city’s website at www.portalberni.ca. Now you know the process; if you disagree with the way the city’s money is being spent, you have the opportunity to tell them. And if you agree with what they’re doing, you have a right to speak up as well. The only way the city is going to know how you really feel about the way they spend taxpayers’ money is if you tell them. And if you don’t tell them, you shouldn’t have the right to bellyache about it.

ICTORIA – Here are a few things I’d like to see in B.C. political life in the coming year, but won’t. An orderly schedule of legislature sittings, one in the spring and one in the fall.

I canvassed this topic with Premier Christy Clark in our year-end interview, and got the usual runaround about how it’s always been optional since old Gordon what’shis-name set the schedule of sittings and elections more than a decade ago. Spring is for the budget and MLAs sit in the fall if they need to discuss legislation. They need to all right, but what governments want to do is ram it through as fast as they can, so that’s what they do. The last couple of years of this have been a sham worthy of a South American banana republic,

with three chambers running simultaneously and opposition members trying to prepare as they run down the hallways. It leads to mistakes in new laws and adds to the public’s cynicism about the whole business, but it gets things done with minimum exposure of the government to criticism. Stephen Harper would approve. A political debate about real issues, rather than just a competition to score points in an endless election campaign.

They’re for it, unless you’re against it. These guys need a Tony Blair-type makeover. They need to be for something, and they need to leave the past behind.

a rapidly fragmenting audience is having some ugly effects. One thing that needs to go is obsessive coverage of who’s winning and who’s losing. If the news media are going to be interested mainly in the gaffes and gotcha moments, is it any surprise that’s what politicians try to provide? The Canada Post announcement that it has to wind up home delivery offers a recent example. Is it really so outrageous for the CEO to suggest that walking to the corner is good exercise? When there’s a 24-hour news cycle to fill, it’s a scandal! How many people know that Canada Post’s unfunded pension liabilities amount to $6.5 billion, as it continues to pay a dwindling workforce to hand out mostly advertising flyers? Should they just keep doing that until they run out of cash? Are taxpayers really expected to maintain another two-tier service that’s only available to select urban people?

Trudeau prepares for 2019 fed race To the Editor,

Justin Trudeau will be 42 years old on Dec. 25. In the 2015 federal election, Justin Trudeau and the federal Liberals will replace Thomas Mulcair and the federal NDP as the official opposition party of Canada. Mulcair will once again take the federal NDP down to the traditional 35 or so seats, as is the common case when it comes to the NDP. The result of the 2015 federal election will see Stephen Harper remain as the Prime

Minister of Canada. In the 2019 Federal election, both Stephen Harper and Mulcair will retire and only Trudeau will remain as one of the official leaders. Trudeau has now begun his apprenticeship, and in the 2019 federal election, he will be 48 years old with a great amount of experience in federal politics. Watch out taxpayers: this will be the return of the federal Liberals as the government of Canada.

Re: Exercise park idea stalls, Dec. 19. Thank goodness! City councillors have found the brakes and have halted the spending of unapproved funds. In this case on a proposed outdoor exercise park, though it could be on any unapproved spending. At least now, as Coun. Jack McLeman notes, there can be debate. But there is no need for debate: an underrun on a budget item is not money that can be “played” with. It should rightly go back into the budget for next year or at worst fund an unfunded but approved budget item. On the budget process, an underrun on a budget item is the same mistake as an overrun, a bad estimate. To believe one can make a bad estimate then take the underrun and spend it on some wish list is a continuing sign of the things wrong down at city hall. This is not their money, it is ours. Now hopefully the council can find the brakes on increased spending and tax increases.

2013: Council gets tough over Tidebrook From / 6

Councillors denied Purdy an extension to tear down the burned out restaurant on Gertrude Street. Fewer letters, fewer stamp sales and less revenue prompted Canada Post to question keeping their Argyle Street outlet open. The postal giant started a community consultation process to gauge the move. The measure was moot through. The outlet would soon close. Maryann McConnell, owner of Alberni Valley Billiards and holder of numerous Canadian snooker and billiard titles, added to her already crowded trophy shelf. McConnell won three national titles at the Canadian Two-Sports Association Canadian Championships in Toronto. Angel Magnussen said she wanted to help make hospitals a less scary place for children. To accomplish this, the keen 17-year-old started a non-profit

company: Hugginz By Angel. The company’s aim was to outfit hospitals across the province with colourful flannel pajamas, gowns and blankets for children to wear during their stay, starting with West Coast General Hospital. In tragic news, former Port Alberni resident Pat Jordan was found dead in Mexico. He was 64. Jordan, who lived in Vancouver, was on a jewellery buying trip in Taxco, Mexico when he was killed. Jordan was featured in the CBC documentary called ‘Young In A Small Town’. Port Alberni BuyLow Foods employee Gene Ray had just completed the Boston Marathon on April 15 just before two pressure cooker bombs exploded at the fish line. The explosion killed three people and injured an estimated 264 others. Port Alberni real estate man Dave Kozegi put the call out for help to find

a Melrose Street complex on April 22. The fire was likely caused by a cigarette, Port Alberni Fire Chief Tim Pley said. In sports news, the Alberni Airborne Volleyball Club christened the new ADSS gym with its first ever volleyball tournament.

At McLean Mill National Historic site, a new spar tree was raised the old fashioned way. The pole raised in April 2009 had rotted in the centre, so it was cut down and a “new” tree—about 172 years old—was donated. The event was special for volunteer Jack James, a former logger who hadn’t raised a spar tree in more than 40 years. The BC Coroner’s Service confirmed that Vivian Leigh Cudmore, aged 63, from Port Alberni died after her suite on Third Avenue and Melrose Street caught fire. With only 16,700 chinook expected to return to the Alberni Valley in 2013 the Port Alberni Salmon Festival adopted a coho-only format for the 42nd annual festival on Labour Day weekend. In sports news, the Armada rugby team was game but overmatched in a tilt with a tough Cowichan Secondary School girls squad, who beat ADSS 63-22. More than 150 people attended the Alberni-Pacific Rim MLA all-candidates forum at the Best Western Barclay Hotel on May 7. Candidates in the May 14 election were incumbent Scott Fraser; Liberal hopeful Darren DeLuca; and BC Conservative upstart Enid-Mary Sangster Kelly. Incumbent AlberniPacific Rim MLA Scott Fraser won the battle for his seat by beating Darren DeLuca 9,829 votes to 5,981 votes. BC Conservative candidate Enid Mary Sangster-Kelly earned 1,377 votes. The BC Liberals won the war though, taking 50 seats to the NDP’s 33.

School District 70 officials announced that the Alberni District Secondary School grad parade and ceremony would not be held on the same night this year. Instead, the car parade and prom was held Saturday, June 8 and a cap-and-gown graduation ceremony on Friday, June 28. In an interview with the News, members of the Thompson family said that they lost more than one brother that fateful Monday when Arron died. Another brother, Archibald, faced second degree murder charges in connection with the fratricide. A deep reservoir of love and a strong familial bond enabled the family to not just cope with the loss of Arron, but also to try and forgive their brother Archibald. “We love each other unconditionally, all of us,” eldest sister Caroline said. Cindy Solda said she was fed up with owners who don’t comply with city bylaws. “Promises were made before but they are empty promises,” Solda said.

Both wrestlers not only went undefeated but beat all their opponents by technical superiority, winning by 10 or more points. he new year has come and for many, this time of year means new beginnings and starting fresh on getting healthier. One of the best ways to start improving health could be throwing out the diet and falling in love with food. Food is not the enemy. Food is meant to be savored and enjoyed. Food represents celebration, sustenance, cultural tradition, the bringing of people together and so much more. The problem with eating habits that

lead to negative behaviours can often be more about how people eat rather than what is consumed. Eating too fast, big portions, eating on the run, secret eating, convenient fast foods, mindless intake, too many starchy foods, excess bakery items, too many sugary drinks are problematic eating behaviours that can lead to poor health over time. A restrictive diet may offer quick fix results, but will not help change poor eating behaviours for long-term solutions. Slowing down, being more mindful while eating and sensing those flavours, textures, smells, while truly enjoying the experience can help

In general, cravings can result in the form of overindulging in convenient, high sugar, fat and salty processed foods. Eating on the run, or in front of the TV or computer screen can be some of the most detrimental, mindless eating behaviours. Passing these automatic (and generally unconscious) negative behaviours on to kids may contribute to many poor health

Turning off the TV, cellphones and computers while eating a family meal can be one surefire way to improve general overall health of children and other family members. Studies indicate kids that sit down and eat a family meal together (defined as at least one adult and one child) have better health, nutrition, behaviours, school performance and feel more connected. Kids who eat dinner with family at least once a day are at lower risk for being overweight and obese and are less likely to suffer from eating disorders.
