News Early French immersion gains approval According to Forstbauer, back in June, Cheam was the location of choice for most parents he’d surveyed. However, months later, some parents began questioning the school district’s decision to locate the program at Cheam elementary. Some were also concerned with Chilliwack middle possibly being slated as the feeder school, criticizing the innercity location. “This is a big concern when the bulk of the initial EFI interest was from families in the south side,” wrote one parent on the Parents for Early French Immersion in
show strong enrollment numbers over the first few years, the school board will have to start looking into additional places to house EFI. “Although Cheam is not the perfect scenario, it’s far better than the alternative,” he wrote. Registration for EFI starts at 8 a.m. Jan. 8. Applications will be accepted until 4 p.m. Jan. 24. Students will be selected through a lottery system. The program officially starts September 2014.
Chilliwack Facebook group following an information meeting in December. Forstbauer helped put things into perspective for parents. “The fact is that we are six months into the planning process of EFI and the district openly admits that there are more things unknown about how this program will evolve,” he wrote on the Facebook page. “As parents of [kindergarten] or Grade 1 students next year, we have a great opportunity to help shape the program and the schools that house this program. Mail thefts prompt police warning Chilliwack RCMP are reminding residents to empty their mailboxes regularly following a spate of mail thefts. This holiday season has seen an increase of mail thefts in comparison to last year, police say. They’re asking people to pick up their mail on a daily basis to protect themselves. They’re also requesting people to report suspicious vehicles that look out of place, at or near a community mail box, and if possible, obtain a licence plate number. “Family and friends take great care in sending gifts to loved ones, so we hope everyone will help ensure the safety of those packages by diligently checking their mail every day,” said Constable Cynthia Kershaw.

News Controversy prompts school board policy debate Chilliwack school district’s policy on drugs and alcohol was heavily questioned this year after Sardis secondar y expelled 12 of its students in September for drugrelated indiscretions. A group of Grade 11 and 12 students on the senior boy’s soccer team smoked marijuana during a weekend soccer tournament in Surrey. The students weren’t caught red-handed, but an adult supervisor suspected the act after smelling the marijuana in the hotel room. When confronted by administration the following Monday, all but one of the students admitted to the indiscretion. They were all expelled and told they’d be transitioned into another high school in the district. Parents were outraged. “Most of these kids are top-notch kids, parent Derek Middleton told The Progress. “They made a bad decision, and they’re now being hit with the hammer for it. The school district reversed the expulsion for three of the students. The issue created a media firestorm and had some within the school district questioning its zero-tolerance policy on drugs and alcohol. School trustee Barry Neufeld implored his fellow trustees and the district’s policy makers to adopt a restorative action approach rather than a punitive approach. “Students with addiction problems, they have a disease, they’re
sick; when they’re going through troubling times, removing them from their friends and school environment will only make it worse, Neufeld said at a November school board meeting. “[Policy 500] is archaic, punitive, and not worthy of a modern education system. Fellow trustees, however, were unwavering.

The board voted in favour of keeping the policy as is in November. But in December, Policy 500 was again challenged – this time the result of adult indiscretion. A parent at Evans elementary was uncomfortable with the school’s annual, gift basket Christmas fundraiser. Every year, each classroom, including the preschool, is responsible for building a gift basket based on a theme. Two

draiser. Superintendent Evelyn Novak assured the media the school district’s policy on drugs and alcohol applies to both students and adults. In a written statement to CBC, Novak stated, “every effort is being made to ensure that our schools are alcohol and drug free. The district’s drugs and alcohol regulation is scheduled for review sometime in January or February.

A 52-year-old Chilliwack man was killed Sunday after losing control of his vehicle and slamming into a tree. The incident occurred at around 10:30 p.m. on Highway 1, one kilometre east of the Yale Road overpass. Police say the vehicle, a 2008 Honda Civic was eastbound on the highway when it struck a pool of water and began to hydro-plane. The driver attempted to correct the situation, but over-steered and lost control of the vehicle. The Honda left the roadway and entered the ditch where it struck a large tree on the driver’s side. The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, died to his injuries at the scene. Notification of next of kin has been done however, his name will not be

RCMP say their initial investigation suggests weather and speed were likely factors in the crash, however they have not ruled out mechanical defects on the vehicle and driver inattention.
