Search and rescue looking for volunteers

Cowichan Search and Rescue is spending the holidays searching, but not because anyone is lost or injured in the wilderness. The group is looking for new members. The volunteer organization is recruiting for a newmember training program that will run from midJanuary to June 2014. Interested applicants should send an email ASAP and no later than Jan. 7, 2014

to info@cowichansar.org to start the application process. Applicants will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract and have a criminal record check completed. “Being part of Search and Rescue is a big commitment, but it’s one of the most rewarding things I’ve been involved with,” said Mitch Wright, Cowichan SAR vice-president.

“Volunteers in groups all across B.C. give hundreds of hours individually every year so they are trained to the highest standards and ready when needed. It usually means giving up time with our own families, but every SAR volunteer does it because they are passionate about their communities and care about bringing people home to their families and loved ones.”

onst. David Pompeo dabbed at tears he couldn’t hide moments after hearing his sentence for shooting an unarmed suspect. They may have been tears of relief and joy. In addition to avoiding jail after being convicted of aggravated assault, a respected judge allowed the young Nanaimo police officer to retain his firearm — a rare act after a violent crime conviction, and one that may have effectively saved Pompeo’s job. It may have been the best possible outcome for the former North Cowichan/ Duncan cop, convicted 10 months earlier in the Sept. 18, 2009 shooting of an unarmed Bill Gillespie. From the moment of the shooting, it took more than 50 months for the case to play out, months where delay became the norm, rather than the exception. Pompeo was charged May 5, 2011, convicted on Feb. 14, 2013 and finally sentenced Dec. 5. Even now, there seems to be more questions than answers. We’re aware that the conviction may be appealed so it’s important that we be reserved in our comment out of respect for that process.” How a comment from one of Pompeo’s bosses would influence or affect the appeal was not explained and is just another one of those mysteries surrounding this case.

There are plenty of other questions being asked, not the least of which is how an officer convicted of a such a violent offence can keep his job, let alone his gun, when a conviction of aggravated assault normally earns serious sentences of up to 14 years in jail. “(The weapons exemption) was very unusual,” said Raji Mangat, counsel for the B.C. Civil Liberties Assoc. of the Dec. 5 sentence handed down by Judge Josiah Wood. “To my knowledge, a police officer convicted of aggravated assault has never been allowed to continue as a police officer,” she said.

“It’s possible it happened, but I really don’t think so and many of the people I’ve spoken to also have said they don’t believe that has ever happened.” Wood said the matter was of serious concern to the public and the court, but there were circumstances that separated the officer’s case from a general aggravated assault case. “I am satisfied there is no risk Const. Court heard on that night Pompeo and his partner, Const. David Birchett, were driving an unmarked pickup when they pulled over Gillespie’s vehicle, suspecting he was driving while prohibited. Gillespie testified he and his passenger, Dale Brewer, had been trying to find an AA meeting but decided instead to drive

Gillespie said he drove no more than 21 metres from the main road into Brewer’s driveway after he saw flashing lights. “Dale and I were both ordered out of the car at gunpoint,” Gillespie said. “I heard both officers. It was later learned the bullet drilled its way to Gillespie’s spine, where it remains lodged to this day. It was only by “chance and the greatest luck” that Gillespie didn’t die, said Wood. “The fact that the bullet still remains lodged in his spine four years later suggests the fact that it will never be removed,” he said. Pompeo’s sentence was tempered by the fact a harsher sentence, like one that involved some time behind bars or a firearms restriction, would have cost Pompeo his job. Cowichan reacts to the Pompeo sentencing

Dear editor Many of the letters and editorials I have read concerning the outcome of the Pompeo/Gillespie case can be characterised as vitriolic or alarmist, so I write to express support for Judge Josiah Wood’s findings. Const. David Pompeo made a serious mistake and the consequences for Mr. Gillespie are grave, but the matter has been weighed by one qualified to do so. Those who would have the officer given the maximum sentence available seek revenge not justice, while others who opine the public has cause to fear encounters with the police mistake fair comment for cant. Dear editor It looks to me like the victim in this case has been largely ignored. I, as a citizen, feel I can no longer believe police are here to protect me. It appears the RCMP feel they need to protect themselves against all. And all includes me. If I scare one of them, they can legally shoot to kill me. That is their training. That protects them in court. If their bullet hits where their training meant it to, I would not have to bear years of unemployment, pain and suffering. There would not be a court case that costs the public millions. It would not cost the family four years of anxiety and a fortune in lawyer’s fees. I think it would be better if I were shot dead, rather than have to go through what Bill Gillespie and his family have had to go through for these past four years. It also appears to me the laws that govern enrolment in the RCMP mean nothing today. This man has a judgment of aggravated assault against him. Why is he continuing to be a paid member of RCMP? Why is he still carrying a gun? Are the RCMP rules different now? RCMP were not ever allowed to have a criminal record. This man has an obvious record. Why is he still on the force? Does the RCMP need a big shake up? It looks to me as if there is a ‘we’ (The RCMP) and their concept of a ‘they’ (the public) It appears obvious to me

now, after this trial. RCMP are not being held responsible for their actions against the public. I am in fear of any officer who stops me. I know there are officers who have been kind and helpful, but to whom do I look now? And, sadly, it looks to me as if the office of the Crown does not stand for members of the public as I always thought they were intended to do. As a taxpayer, I want a clear explanation of why Bill Gillespie was not represented better by the Province of British Columbia and why this trial was allowed to cost us so much money and give us so little satisfaction. But it looks to me like I will most likely never get such an explanation. Irene McGeary Duncan

Dear editor In response to the Dec. 18 “In My Opinion” by Sue Dalrymple. Thanks. I agree, and her letter stated the facts so well. Far too much publication on Mr. Gillespie and not enough support for our police. When the police pull you over, it would be wise to do what they say. As the letter stated, if you have not done anything wrong you will not have a problem. I don’t know where all this distrust and disrespect has come from toward our RCMP. Dear editor I couldn’t agree more with Sue Darymple’s column in regards to the shooting of Bill Gillespie. If more people did what they are told to do by a police officer, right or wrong, every one’s life would be a little bit better. I never understood why the media always seemed to lean so far on the side of Gillespie. I heard he had a long history with the police, which is why he was pulled over in the first place. One would hope you would figure it out and do as you’re told. I guess in his case he never did. Tim Openshaw Duncan

Dear editor I see another citizen in our valley (Marvin Antoniuk) has been sentenced for aggravated assault. He goes to jail with a mandatory firearms ban. Pompeo gets no firearms ban and no jail time. Go figure: same crime, both convicted — the one a police officer with extensive firearms training shoots a man with a gun; the other, Joe Citizen with no training, uses a bow and arrow. Which one goes to jail? Three guesses the first two don’t count. Sentences don’t seem equal — just my opnion. I’d rather take my chances with the bow and arrow than a loose-cannon cop with a gun. Dear editor I agree wholeheartedly with your editorial suggesting we don’t need officer David Pompeo out there with a gun. Moreso, we are past the day in our country when most police need holstered sidearms. Sure, having a gun in the car that they have to go back and get would be fine. That would at least require thought rather than a knee-jerk reaction in a moment of panic and tunnel vision when training takes over and they draw and fire. The first line of attack should always be caution, situation management, retreat and reinforcements if necessary. The gun should be a second line of defence, not primary. We should not have to be afraid when pulled over in routine matters, when we exercise our normal and justified freedoms. I would not expect to be met with a drawn weapon or an order to hit the dirt when getting out of my vehicle for discussion of a routine traffic stop. Gillespie was within his reasonable rights and Pompeo was not. Nick Caumanns Duncan

Bright Angel to get a brightening $400,000 project: 2014 being set aside to give Koksilah River park a makeover Don Bodger

The park’s outdoor recreation amenities, originally constructed by the Bright Angel Park Society, are being overhauled after several decades of commendable service to park visitors. The Cowichan Valley Regional District took over the management of the society in 2001. A total of $400,000 has been earmarked for the park project through grants from the Province of B.C.’s Recreation Rejuvenation Fund plus an additional $60,000 from the Federal Gas Tax Fund. Which Gord was which? It didn’t really matter during this super singalong show in the Crofton Pub where The Gords delighted fans with prime picking and lovely harmonies. Many of the night’s numbers by guitarists Gord Matthews and Gord Lee Worden, plus bassist Gord Maxwell, were pulled from their debut disc Pick.

Historical: Good Timber May 23, Chemainus Theatre

The Klondike was one thing. Falling coastal forests was another. Good Timber, Chemainus Theatre Festival’s musicalhistory lesson gave viewers a terriﬁc glimpse into that colourfully crude, sadly bygone era during its debut. We left understanding how the dangerous, dirty job chewed and spat out men too weak, or too stupid, to tame our tall timber. Sub-dubbed Songs & Stories Of The Western Logger, six multi-instrumental musicians with The Other Guys Theatre Company strummed and sung their way into our hearts, spinning poetic yarns from the late logging icon and inventor Robert E. Swanson.

Humour and emotional honesty of songwriter Beverley McKeen percolated through the debut of her third CD, Auracles. Those who expected another guitar-slinging folk singer got a delightfully different change from bluejeans fare. The valley songbird’s pink dress and matching boots gave the packed Duncan Garage Showroom a splash of colour due the evening’s star. Those boots were reﬂected in her jaunty number 50 Pairs (of shoes), evidence of her wearable collectibles — and perhaps a heel click to McKeen’s sobering Walking For Justice Justice.

Cowichan’s rollicking roster of 2013 musical hits spilled into tuneful productions by students and professionals who served us tasty brain food. We added high school, historical and political slots to our local Junos toasting great shows that entertained Cowicha-

nians and visitors this year. Brentwood College’s youthful yarn In The Heights, Chemainus Theatre’s sawdust delight Good Timber, and James Gordon’s puppet-packed production Stephen Harper: The Musical stretched our imaginations about how lyrics and

melody can effectively conspire to make us ponder dramatic messages while enjoying the music. We can’t possibly attend all of the valley’s enticing concerts. These are our Juno gems that sparkled most.

Blues-rock choir boy Colin James gave his Cowichan Theatre crowd every cent of its $45 ticket price. Opened, then backed, by fret freshman Chris Caddell — and a behind-the-curtain bassist — Juno-winner James was in ﬁne form on the stage’s rumpus-room setting. He chatted to fans, laughed, and cranked out a host of hits and familiar tunes.

DEATHS YATES, Peter Douglas Apr 6, 1954 â€“ Dec 10, 2013 The final adventure of Peter Yates ended at his home in Cobble Hill, BC on December 10, 2013. Peter was the son of Doug and Bibsy Yates. He was born in Chemainus and raised in Penticton, BC. He is survived by his wife Joanne, his daughters Aly and Lizzie, Lizzy, brothers Norman and Michael, sister Janine, a large extended family and innumerable friends, colleagues and teammates.

The untimely loss of Peter is difficult because of what he represented. For almost all of his life he was the model for strength, health, vigor, capability and integrity. He was an educator and mentor to thousands, particularly in pursuits that had anything to do with the outdoors. In his relatively short life, as a teacher at Shawnigan Lake School and in his other work, he made lasting contributions and left indelible impressions in so many areas including outdoor adventure, the sport of rowing and the leadership of youth, particularly through exposure to hands on projects in developing nations. Nothing better exemplified Peter than the intelligence and dignity that he maintained in the final stages of his life and the comfort these qualities brought to others. A celebration of Peterâ€™s life will take place at the chapel of Shawnigan Lake School on January 25, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. FIRST MEMORIAL FUNERAL SERVICES

The champs edged out the Duncan trio of Aden Nettleton, Josh Green and Tyler Murchie in the runner-up spot 2115-2104. Daryl Attrill, Samantha Gullens and Ryan Harms came fourth with a total of 1879. Nettleton also came first in the B team event with partners Mackenzie Thompson and Mikayla Edmunds, beating the all-Bantam Duncan team of Brady Wratten, Carson Batty and Austin Ross 2156-2146. Rowan Allair, Amber Kelly and firstyear Bantam Emma Smith finished third at 2078. In the A Division singles, Ketch had a superb performance with a 770 total

The top 20 has been treated to words of wisdom, strong advice and food for thought from guest speakers during the News Leader Pictorial’s Youth Athlete of the Year awards. The event moved to Shawnigan Lake School last year, with Olympians Hilary Stellingwerff, pictured, and Kyle Hamilton addressing the athletes.

The previous year at the Duncan Meadows Golf Club had Anna-Marie de Zwager and Emily Zurrer telling the athletes about their experiences. Paralympian Tony Theriault was the guest speaker for the 2010 athletes. Also appearing previously at the Cowichan Golf Club were: rower Jon Beare and swimmer Ryan Cochrane. A great lineup, for sure.

oo much talent and not enough slots to fit it in. That’s always been my dilemma in compiling the Cowichan Valley’s Top 113+ Youth Athletes of the Year. There has especially been an explosion of top-notch athletes in 2013 throughout valley secondary schools. Part Two of our year-end recap features athletes from No. 51 to 80. This is where things really get interesting. Many of the athletes in this group had a huge year and climbed the ladder significantly, with a strong shot at moving up into the top 20 next year for those younger than Grade 12. Right off the top we have Cowichan Valley Wrestling Club members Molly O’Donnell and Chelsea Warke as prime examples. O’Donnell placed sixth at nationals and provincials plus second at the Western Age Class and War on The Floor competitions. Warke was third at the island competition, second at Western Age Class and participated in the nationals. Tai Williams made a big impact in her first year at Shawnigan Lake School. Despite being a junior, she was in the starting lineup for the field hockey team and was the recipient of the All-Rounder Award due to her versatility on the field and the passion and commitment she pours into her sports. Grade 11 students Pollo Claxton and Brandon Corby were standouts for the Cowichan Midget A1 Thunder. Claxton is arguably the top goalie for his age on the Island and Corby displayed his high degree of skill and tenaciousness. Alison Franks, Kristin Paddle and Hannah Morten are all standouts from the Cowichan Secondary School girls’ rugby team. Franks is a standoff-inside centre and a strong leader, Paddle plays scrum half and Morten, still in Grade 11, is developing fast since making the transition from a soccer goalkeeper. Tristan Mandur had a phenomenal year in golf, winning not only the Arbutus Ridge Golf Club’s junior title but also the men’s crown as well. Lauren King-Nyberg has emerged as another dynamite Duncan Christian School volleyball and basketball player. She makes key contributions in both sports and obviously loves to play. Danielle Schmidt was recently featured as the News Leader Pictorial Youth Athlete of the Week. The former competitive swimmer has aspirations of a rowing scholarship south of the border. Corall Strugnell of Metchosin is another product of the great Duncan Dynamics Gymnastics Club

program while Noah Charles is the third member of his family to carve a place on this list with his basketball prowess. Travis McDonald is a six-foot-six basketball and football player and should continue to get better as he matures. Sierra Farr, Cody Milne and Michelle Evans are all carrying on Shawnigan Lake School’s strong athletic tradition with not only their abilities, but great attitude and sportsmanship. Dawson Haines makes his way onto the list as one of the valley’s top-rated young hockey players after a superb season in Bantam Tier 1. Emily Adams puts Chemainus Secondary School on the map through her athletic endeavours in volleyball, basketball and track. She’s also an elite soccer player but her main claim to fame is golf and she’s one of the most personable young ladies you’ll ever meet. More from Queen Margaret’s School comes from Juliet Westlake’s abilities in four sports and Lauren Bailey in field hockey and equestrian. Jennifer Jack has played Cowichan Valley Soccer Association and First Nations soccer, with great results.

She’s also a dedicated member of the Cowichan Tribes Youth Council. Ben Leech is obviously always in the shadow of his older brother Jed, but is a very fine water skier in his own right.

he Cowichan Valley Capitals broke out of their scoring slump in a big way last Thursday night, thumping the Trail Smoke Eaters 7-2 in a B.C. Hockey League game at Cowichan Arena. The Caps took a while to catch fire. After going scoreless in the first period with the Smoke Eaters, they got some offense going but also gave up a couple of goals in taking a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes. The third period was a runaway, with the Caps scoring four unanswered goals. Leading the way was 16-year-old valley product Jordan Topping. He went into the game with four goals and came out of it with a total of seven on the season after scoring a hat trick. “It was nice to get them and help my team out,’’ said Topping. While it was a good night for him with all the attention scoring a hat trick usually brings, Topping was quick to credit his linemates.
