Robberstads, left homeless after house fire, wrapped in community support Jessica Peters THE OBSERVER
The Robberstad family has a home for the holidays. It's a wonderful turn of events for the family of six, following a devastating house fire that left them homeless last week. They should be moving into the house in the next day or so, Connie Robberstad said. And while it's in need of a little work, it's nothing a few good tradespeople and some elbow grease can't fix. "We have a place now, we just have to get some people together to clean it up," she told the Observer on Monday.
"It's just a lot of little things," she said, like a constantly running bathtub. The best thing is, the house is in the same rural Agassiz neighbourhood as their previous home. And while there weren't many possessions left behind after the fire, there were several family pets. "It's not too far to get the animals," Robberstad said. "There are places for the chickens and the pigs and the pony." The family was given three nights at a hotel for free, through Kent's Emergency Social Services program. But when that ran out, they had to start paying $200 a night for a hotel.

Robberstad is thrilled at the idea of settling back in, and creating a home for their four children. And the community has stepped up to help in that regard. As soon as word got out that a local family had lost their house, donations began to pour into the children's school, Kent elementary. Principal Chris Wejr jumped in to help gather donations and communicate with the family to find out what they needed. The answer was 'everything, — but there was nowhere to put it. They needed a house. That came with the help of Wendy Colman, yet another school district

employee who is helping the family get back their feet. "She has told us to make a wish list," Robberstad said. "With her help, we can do this." The community support has been a comfort, she added. In addition to the clothing that has been collected for the family, Wejr started a fundraising page on FundRazr. On Tuesday afternoon, the total raised was sitting at about $2,800. "It's hard to believe," Robberstad said. "That's a lot of help from the community. It feels really good. It's a really big burden off our shoulders, to know that the community is there Continued on 3

for us." Robberstad's husband, Bill Perry, was outside doing chores when a fire started in the home. When he opened the door to go inside, the flames erupted with the added oxygen. No one was hurt in the fire, including the family cats. At the same time, Robberstad, an artist, was busy painting a seasonal picture in the window of Chilliwack's Value Village. "He said 'sorry to bother you,' and not to worry," she said. He put her at ease and said he would take care of the fire department and get the kids from school, so that she could finish her work. "I did most of the painting," she said, and went back a few days later to finish. "It kind of helps to keep your mind busy." She's really looking forward to settling in for the holidays, and hoping they'll get the time for one of their favourite Christmas traditions.
"We're just organizing our Christmas wreaths," she said. "It's something we do every year, and I'm hoping to have one craft day before Christmas. We usually give them as gifts to our friends." To help with the Robberstads this Christmas, visit the FundRazr page. news@ahobserver.com

Agassiz RCMP members stood guard collecting food and cash donations at the SuperValu on Dec. 7, as part of the region-wide Stuff the Cruiser event.
RCMP members of the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment braved the cold on Saturday, Dec. 7, by volunteering their time to support Community Food Banks resulting in donations totaling more than 23,000 dollars. Thanks to volunteers, local businesses and the community, it was by far one of the best years for
the food drive with a total of 18,413 pounds of food ($18,413 in value) and $4,771 in cash donations. “This was a great event that saw the community come together to help those in need. I would like to thank those individuals who helped make this year’s Stuff the Cruiser event one of the best years yet,” said Corporal Harinder Kheleh.

Opinion We’re all friends and neighbours Goodness and charity have won over tragedy during the last week in both Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs, despite the potential for sadness. First, the community of Agassiz was devastated to learn that a family with four young children had lost their home to a fire. While the family was just happy to be alive, to be together and to be safe, their friends and neighbours rallied together to make sure the family would also be clothed, fed and housed. With donations of money and clothing and more, the family is well on their way to a happy Christmas. The outpouring of love from the community has been beautiful to behold. But then, more shock as we learned that someone completely ruined Kyle Reilly's memorial. Who would destroy such a special place, dedicated to a

young life that was lost? Who could be so heartless? As it turns out, it matters little who dared to stoop so low. What truly is in the hearts and minds of people is that, once again, the community showed its true colours. Just as they did with the house fire, friends and neighbours circled the wagons and showed love and kindness as they worked together to rebuild the memorial. While some Grinches may believe that it's just the season we're in, this temporary time of goodwill and charity, that is seeing neighbours lend each other a hand, it's more likely it's a solid sense of community. And it's comforting to know that there is more good than bad in this world. And when faced with sadness, your community will be there to lift your spirits and help you back on your feet again.

Premier looks back on 2013 B.C. VIEWS Tom Fletcher After a whirlwind year that started with a come-from-behind election win, Premier Christy Clark sat down with me for the traditional year-end interview in her Victoria office. Here are excerpts from that discussion. A longer version with video can be found under the Opinion tab of this newspaper’s website. TF: Premier, you surprised a few people this year. What surprised you the most about 2013? PCC: I guess it was the disconnect between the pollsters and the pundits, and the public. I did have a sense all the time that the citizens were thinking something different in the run-
up to the election campaign. I wondered, am I missing something here, or are they missing something? And I guess it turned out that it wasn’t me that was missing something. TF: The liquefied natural gas export project is going to use a lot of natural gas, especially in the early years. Will B.C.’s greenhouse gas reduction targets [20 per cent reduction by 2020, 80 per cent by 2050] have to be changed? PCC: I don’t have a clear answer on that yet. We are working with the companies on exactly how we are going to structure their environmental commitments and costs, and their electricity costs versus using gas, the total royalty tax regime. We're looking at that as one package. However that turns out, though, this opportunity to export natural gas to Asia is the single biggest opportunity we

have ever had as a province to reduce greenhouse gas emissions around the world. In shipping this to China, we are going to help them wean themselves off some of the dirtiest coal anybody's burning anywhere in the world.

numbers and studies. For me, we have a chance to do good for the world, and we’re going to take it. TF: On oil pipelines, your agreement in November with Alberta Premier Alison Redford involves B.C. supporting her effort for a national energy strategy. What do you see it doing in the future? PCC: The big idea that she’s trying to pursue with that is a strategy that will connect us east to west in energy. Energy grids are much better connected north to south than they are east to west. So she’s trying to pursue a pan-Canadian strategy for the exchange of energy, whether that’s hydroelectricity or natural gas or whatever it is. PCC: It’s typical of the other guys to reinterpret and misquote. That’s what they do. They’re in opposition. What I said was, we have five conditions that must be met in order for heavy oil to be considered to go ahead in British Columbia. That has not changed. The five conditions remain in place. As of today, none of them have been met. The only thing that is different today, from before the election, is that now I no longer stand alone in supporting the five conditions. Students hold food drive The AESS leadership class would like to thank all students and staff who brought in food over the last few weeks. This will have a great positive impact on many people in our community over the holidays. In total we had approximately 700 food items brought in. The class collected cans for about 3 weeks from anyone who brought them in, as well as doing a “get out of class” fundraiser in which each class that was able to collect the equivalent amount of cans as people can skip a block of class, go to the gym and cheer on the senior girls basketball team. This was a huge success. We would like to send out a special thank you to Agassiz-Harrison Employment and Support services
as well as the Agassiz Subway for donating the amazing prizes this year. Irony in recycling plant's location Learning that a new mercury and PCB recycling plant will be located virtually on the banks of the Fraser River was surprising to say the least. Why would the City of Chilliwack put such a useful and necessary recycling facility in a more counter productive location? It's ironic that one would go to such lengths to handle and recycle these toxic carcinogens in an incredibly dangerous location concerning fish, wildlife, and the very water we consume, to protect us! These are very toxic substances, a lot more
sinister than the organic leaching from the First Nations landfill that it was compared to by Mayor Gates. Nobody understands why there, you could literally throw a rock to the river from the edge of that location. If there was ever a flood, and there has been, even if it was built up above flood level, it would be at jeopardy. Then there's the everyday threat of a major earthquake, we know it's coming, so let's build a life threatening plant in the most vulnerable location. Mayor Gates and the Chilliwack council
are trying to divert the attention of their location miscue against the very people who are asking council for time to review the whole process that was flung at them without notice. Why is council trying to push this through with as little consultation as possible? Surely there's another location in the area that would be more suitable than the banks of the largest salmon spawning river in the world. How about near where PCBs and mercury are produced and used, that would make sense. Art Green Hope, B.C.

A massive crowd showed up for this year’s CP Holiday Train performance Sunday night, and they were treated to a lively show by Matt Dusk, Melanie Doane and even a quick visit from Santa Claus. While the train was running about a half an hour late, the weather was milder than in previous years. When the train rolled in covered in animated Christmas lights, the side of a one rail car dropped and the
show began instantly. That show includes a large donation to the local food bank every year. The CP Holiday Train is a nationwide fundraiser and awareness campaign for community food banks. In Agassiz and Harrison, 2,000 people access the food bank, through Community Services. At Christmas, families and individuals can apply for a Christmas hamper. Grace Admiraal from Community Ser-
vices said the need is up this year. Last year, 135 hampers were received. This year, about 150 hampers will be given out, reaching about 400 people. CPR handed over a cheque in the amount of $7,000 for the food bank aboard the Holiday Train, with Admiraal and Mayor John Van Laerhoven in attendance. Admiraal thanked everyone involved with train, the food drive and the evening’s set up. In addition to the CPR donation, food and cash were being
collected by volunteers along Pioneer Ave. The Holiday Train travels across the United States and Canada. Since the program’s inception in 1999, the Holiday Train has raised more than $7.4 million and more than three million pounds of food across both countries. Performers this year included Dusk and Doane, as well as Sarah McLachlan, Tom Cochrane, Sheryl Crow and Natalie McMaster. news@ahobserver.com

When Jacki Meisner drove by the memorial for her son on Sunday, everything was as it always is. But by the time she visited on Monday morning, everything was oh-so-wrong. Someone had destroyed the memorial, erected after her seven year old son, Kyle, was killed by a dangerous driver on June 25, 2008. "The whole thing is horrible; but anger never fixes anything," Meisner said. "There are more good people in this world than bad. We're fortunate to live
in a community where people care. I'm blessed to have wonderful friends and amazing neighbors who lent their kindness and time to help me clean things up." And while the vandalism was heartbreaking, she is moved more by the positive actions taken by those around her. "At the end of the day I can only feel sorry for the person or persons who did this because I'm sure they have issues that they need to deal with; anger and hurt are very hard places to be. So I will send them love and light and pray for them to find peace."

Agassiz couple plans to plead guilty Booths to face sentencing for cash smuggling in January Jessica Peters THE OBSERVER
Jonna and Robert Booth, from Agassiz, have both now plead guilty to bulk cash smuggling into the United States. The couple will face a judge for sentencing in North Dakota on Jan. 23. Court documents obtained by Black Press show that the Booths will plead that they entered North Dakota from Canada with the intent to evade a currency reporting require-
ment, and knowingly hid more than the allowed $10,000. They were carrying $73,080, hidden in a panel of their camper. They are facing a jail term of five years, a fine of $250,000 and one year of supervised release. Because of their guilty plea, there will be no trial. Their agreement to plead guilty could lessen their imprisonment time. Jonna and Robert Booth’s troubles began when they attempted
to cross the border into Northgate, North Dakota on Oct. 8. They were traveling in a 1999 Coach Camper, and were chosen for a secondary inspection. An inspection of the vehicle revealed the cash stowed away in a panel of the camper. The Booths were immediately separated and detained. While they both initially claimed to officers that the money was won gambling, Mrs. Booth is said to have changed her story
when officers told her they found her journal, and knew that the money was actually from the sale of marijuana. Booth then told officers the couple had endured financial hardship, and in January this year they had began running drugs to Manitoba about once a month. She could not say how much marijuana had been transported, and how much they had made. They had crossed into the U.S. to avoid traveling
through the Rockies, after learning of poor weather in that area. They had just finished transporting an unknown amount of marijuana, stowed under their front seats as they traveled across Canada, to a house in Winnipeg.

News ACE continues Christmas breakfast tradition
For the third year, a free Christmas breakfast is being offered for seniors in the area. The Christmas breakfast program is organized by the Agassiz Centre for Education, and is served at the Agassiz Legion. Breakfast is served
up, along with some much needed holiday companionship with other seniors. Santa will even be on hand to spread the Christmas cheer. Breakfast runs from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and free tickets are available beforehand.

ANTI-CYBERBULLYING POLICY The Sts’ailes Chief and Council are committed to the safety and integrity of the Sts’ailes organization and community. With the increased use of technology the Sts’ailes Chief and Council recognizes the need to advise community members, employees and the public of the implementation of policy designated to protect the rights and freedoms of all individuals. “Cyber-bullying” means bullying through the use of technology or any electronic communication, including, but not limited to, a transfer of signs, signals, writing, images, sounds, data or intelligence of any nature transmitted by the use of any electronic device, including, but not limited to, a computer, telephone, cellular telephone, text messaging device and personal digital assistant. Examples of conduct that may constitute cyber-bullying include, but are not limited to: 1. Posting slurs or rumors or displaying any defamatory, inaccurate, disparaging, violent, abusive, profane, or sexually oriented material about an individual on a website or other online application ie Facebook/MySpace; 2. Singling someone out and inviting others to attack or make fun of them. 3. Pressuring others to exclude someone from a community gathering, event or social setting. (either online or offline). 4. Posting misleading or fake photographs or digital video footage of an individual on websites or creating fake websites or social networking profiles in the guise of posing as the target; 5. Impersonating or representing another individual through use of that other individual’s electronic device or account to send e-mail, text messages, instant messages (IM), or phone calls; 6. Sending e-mail, text messages, IM, or leaving voice mail messages that are mean or threatening, or so numerous as to bombard the target’s e-mail account, IM account, or cell phone; and 7. Using a camera phone or digital video camera to take and/or send embarrassing or “sexting” photographs of individuals. Bullying or suspected bullying is reportable in person or in writing (including anonymously) to the appropriate personnel (Chief and Council/HR Department). Sts’ailes employees who have been cyber-bullied or are aware of incidents of cyber-bullying are to report this behavior to their supervisor. Failure to report known cyber-bullying may be subject to disciplinary consequences. Acts of reprisal or retaliation against any person who reports an incident of bullying are prohibited. Any employee who is determined to have falsely accused another of bullying shall be subject to disciplinary consequences. Any employee or non-employee may be subject to dismissal and/or criminal code consequences for cyber-bullying behavior. Individuals found to have committed an act of cyber-bullying will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law both criminally and civilly. For employees’ of Sts’ailes this may include disciplinary action and/or dismissal.
Please be advised that Seabird Island First Nation has received from BC Parks, approval of our Initial Proposal for a Boundary Adjustment to the Sasquatch Park. The next stage is a detailed proposal to address numerous considerations, one of which is consultation with interested local environmental and community organizations. The purpose of the boundary adjustment is to allow for the use of existing access roads so that logging equipment can develop and harvest timber in an area to the south of Sasquatch Park. The boundary adjustment would remove the existing access roads, estimated to be an area of 12 hectares, from the Park. Seabird Island First Nation representatives would be pleased to meet with interested parties to discuss this boundary adjustment proposal. MAYOR’S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE 2013 It’s hard to believe that it is already time to say Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year. Looking back, it has been a great year here in Kent. Christmas always heralds a time for quiet reflection, to reminisce over where we have been and what we have accomplished during the past year. The District of Kent takes great pride in helping to make our community a wonderful place it is. This past year has been a year of many accomplishments, highlighted by: • The correction of civic addresses along the Lougheed Hwy through to Ruby Creek to assist all first responders in finding the correct property in an emergency; • The installation of the Hamersley Flood Box to improve rural drainage for agricultural lands; • The expansion of the Community Recreation & Cultural Centre (formally the Fitness / Activity Centre) is underway; • The chlorination disinfection system at the Agassiz Wastewater Treatment Plant was replaced by an ultraviolet (UV) system to achieve better disinfection efficiency of wastewater effluent using a much safer process; • The filming of Wayward Pines that is bringing in $1 Million in outside funding to the area; • The updating of the Official Community Plan that outlines policies and guidelines to achieve sustainable growth and prosperity through 2040; • The award of 5-Blooms by the Provincial Communities in Bloom for the fourth consecutive year; • The recipient of the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for the 5th consecutive year; • The Municipal Hall renovations; and • Canadian Pacific Railway and Canadian Nation Railway crossing improvements. As I move around our town, meet new people and attend many functions, it is always heartening to see the degree of community involvement. I have always been aware of the magnificent community spirit here, and that has been reinforced many times in recent weeks. Christmas is a special season for all of us. A time to spend with family and friends and I’m personally looking forward to spending some quality time with my family. Christmas is an opportunity for sharing and caring for each other as we join together with loved ones. This Christmas let us take time out to think of those less fortunate than ourselves, and be generous in our giving. On behalf of Council and staff at the District of Kent, I wish you and your families a safe, peaceful and joyful Christmas and a Happy New year.
