Lots of help for Mossom ‘Within minutes’ of news of fire, offers to help began By Gary McKenna THE TRI-CITY NEWS

Throughout its 37year history, the Mossom Creek Hatchery has given hundreds Tri-City students an education in fisheries and the environment. Now, many of those students are giving back. Since fire destroyed the facility last week, hatchery founder Ruth Foster said she has been inundated with offers of support. The emails and phone calls have come from former students, volunteers, Tri-Cities residents and even contractors offering their help to rebuild the facility. “I always knew we had incredibly strong support,” Foster said. “I am really touched by the

people who have never even been to Mossom. I feel that the community is waking up to something that they lost that they almost didn’t realize they had.” Foster and the volunteers at Mossom will need all the help they can get. Last Wednesday’s blaze wiped out the main building, which was constructed in 1992, along with the education centre, which was added in 2001. A shed and the outhouse were the only structures that survived the blaze. Incubation trays containing coho eggs and 110,000 chum were also destroyed in the fire — along with 37 years of records, photographs and press clippings — and Foster said Mossom will likely have to rely on surplus eggs from other hatcheries to rebuild its stocks. see 4,400 COHO, page A3

Be safe during season This festive time of year can present a unique set of hazards. Fire departments in the Tri-Cities are asking residents to be careful with Christmas trees, decorations and wrapping paper, as well as heat sources such as lights, candles and extension cords. Other tips from firefighters: • Extinguish candles when leaving a room or going to sleep. • Keep candles at least 30 cm away from anything that can burn, including clothing, bedding, books, curtains or Christmas trees. • Keep combustibles away from Christmas trees. • Check all lights and discard damaged strings. • Use proper clips instead of staples to put up Christmas lights. Residents should also make sure they have working smoke alarms.

Moore is sorry for ‘insensitive’ comment By Gary McKenna The Tri-CiTy News

Tri-Cities MP James Moore has apologized for “insensitive” remarks he made about child poverty during an interview last week with a radio reporter.

On Saturday, the Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam MP told a News 1130 radio reporter that issues of child poverty fall under provincial jurisdictions and Ottawa has no plans to interfere. He then added: “Is it my job to feed my neigh-

bour’s child? I don’t think so.” Moore initially blasted the radio piece on Twitter, saying his remarks were taken out of context and the story was inaccurate. But on Monday, he took a different tone. “I made an insensitive

comment that I deeply regret,” he said in a statement on his website. “I apologize.” “Caring for each other is a Canadian ethic that I strongly believe in — always have and always will. Of course poverty is an issue that concerns

me, and concerns all Canadians. All levels of government, indeed all members of our society, have a responsibility to be compassionate and care for those in need. “Great work has been done to tackle poverty and the challenges as-

sociated with poverty. And while more work is needed, I know the cause of fighting poverty is not helped by comments like those I made last week. For that, I am sorry.” gmckenna@tricitynews.com

Family can help those with Alzheimer’s during holidays Keeping it simple and triggering memories are key

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s isn’t the end of a meaningful life and the holiday season can be a time to embrace the change experienced by loved ones with the disease and to learn to deal with it, says Jennifer O’Hagan. Family gatherings pose dilemmas for people with dementia and their caregivers, and the manager of program development with the Alzheimer Society of BC said she’s often heard from families that this is a tough time. “There are so many memories of things past and how things are different now,” O’Hagan said. “There’s huge loses, that heartfelt sadness for the losses the person [with Alzheimer’s] is facing because they can no longer do what they did in the past.” Extra stresses are placed on caregivers, as well. Not only do they support the spouse or loved one, but they may be the traditional host of the family gathering. There are ways to deal with this time of year, however, and the Alzheimer Society is offering help. Information and a video from a recent tele-workshop is still online (see sidebar), as are several other workshops on important topics for families dealing with dementia.

Sharing memories from the past can bring families together and make the holidays meaningful and enjoyable for everyone, including family members with dementia, according to the Alzheimer Society of BC. This is the time to surround the person with things that trigger their five senses to help spark their long-term memory: photographs, seasonal music, pine boughs, holiday foods and beverages.

GET ALZHEIMER’S INFO ONLINE

The Alzheimer Society of B.C. offers free telephone workshops on a variety of topics, including one on celebrating the holidays. To view past tele-workshops online or participate in future workshops, visit www.alzheimerbc.org/We-CanHelp/Telephone-Workshops.aspx. One of the key points O’Hagan wants families to understand is to let go of expectations. Traditions may have to change but new ones can be created. “We encourage using the holidays as an opportunity to educate family and friends about what they are going through,” said O’Hagan. She recommends a letter or email to family members in advance, letting them know what to expect and how they can continue to connect with

the person with dementia. “Even encouraging them to look at the website [www.alzheimerbc. org],” O’Hagan added. “There’s some really good information about what to expect.” Depending on the progression of the disease, there are some practical tips for interacting with a person with dementia, and ways to include them in the seasonal fun. Instead of mourning the past, O’Hagan encourages people to focus

on the person’s remaining abilities. They can help with food or decorating but keep it simple. Instead of making a whole pot of mashed potatoes, which involves a series of complex tasks, “give them one task, so they are contributing and participating in the activities and have that sense of accomplishment, as well.” Another thing to consider is simplifying the food and the dinner table decorations, dishes and cutlery. People with Alzheimer’s may have difficulty distinguishing the items or might not know what to do with them. She also recommends setting up a quiet room where a person with Alzheimer’s can retreat when things get overwhelming or, perhaps,

a separate table where they can interact with one or two people instead of a group during dinner. Other tips include: • Give gifts that are simple, useful and practical, such as the person’s favourite music, photo albums or hand lotions. • Don’t change the person’s routine too much; this will help calm and orient them in the midst of all the activities. If they live in a care facility, it may be possible to bring them home in advance for a trial run but if the person reacts negatively, it might be better to join the festivities at the facility. Wherever a family gathering is held, make time to reminisce using tools like photos, music, food or scents to help trigger memories, O’Hagan says, pointing out that this may be a good time to reconnect with family members. “A touch of a hand or smile can go a long way,” she said. Above all, caregivers should make time for themselves by appealing to others for help and accepting support when it is offered. dstrandberg@tricitynews.com

“We can take fry and release them into Mossom so their last taste of fresh water will be Mossom,” she said. “We will get some of our stock that way.” But there was some good news. Tanks containing 4,400 coho were spared from the fire and have been running properly since the blaze. That will go a long way toward helping to maintain the fish levels at Mossom Creek, although Foster does expect a dip in numbers four years from now as a result of the fire. Fish that spawn naturally in the creek will also help the process. After removing obstructions in the creek, more than 800 chum and 100 coho spawned at Mossom last season. Mossom has also been getting a lot of support from the city of Port Moody. Last night (Tuesday), council was scheduled to hold a special meeting after The Tri-City News’ print deadline to decide whether $10,000 in contingency funds should be given to the hatchery operators, the Burrard Inlet Marine Enhancement Society.

Mayor Mike Clay said last week the money could be used to help clear the site and allow the organization to carry on with its work through the winter. “We know it’s not enough money to rebuild the hatchery but it could bridge them for a little while,” he said. “We can make sure that the limited operations of the hatchery can continue through the winter.” The city is also looking at the possibility of moving a trailer onto the property, which could work on a temporary basis until a new facility is built. Clay said he is confident that the money will be available to rebuild the Mossom Creek Hatchery. He too, has received calls from numerous businesses and developers offering their support. “It was happening literally within minutes,” he said. “These things can really pull a community together.” • Elaine Willis, a Mossom Creek Hatchery volunteer, is asking anyone with photographs, press clippings and records from the hatchery to send them to elaineawillis@ gmail.com. gmckenna@tricitynews.com

Midwife needs gear By Gary McKenna The Tri-CiTy News

A Port Moody midwife is pleading for the return of several pre-natal care instruments that were stolen from her vehicle last week. The equipment includes a Summit fetal Doppler ultrasound, a blood pressure cuff and a baby scale, and a cotton sling. “This has affected her ability to care for expecting mothers and newborns,” said Port Moody Police Department Const. Luke van Winkel. “She is hoping to have the items back, no questions asked.” Other news:

Two roadside suspensions were issued Saturday night as part of the Port Moody Police Department’s drinking-driving CounterAttack efforts. More than 800 vehicles were stopped in a 90-minute period, resulting in one seven-day immediate roadside prohibition and another 24hour prohibition. Six violation tickets were also issued along with five warnings, while one man was arrested for breach of conditions. The roadblock was not the only place police were catching impaired drivers. Officers dealt with one impaired driver who received a 90-day prohibition for alcohol while a 24-hour prohibition was issued for drugs. Moody police officer found a male in the area matching the suspect’s description from the previous files. The 29-yearold was arrested and is currently facing charges of possession of a breakin instrument and two counts of break and enter.

A description of a vehicle involved in a robbery at Terra Vista Place 15 minutes later matched the first theft and police were able to arrest the suspect along St. Johns Street. The bike was recovered along with some tools and a 30-year-old Surrey man is facing two counts of theft under $5,000, theft of a vehicle, two counts breach of probation and one count of possession of stolen property.

Exposed, then arrested Man busted after spotted by jogger By Gary McKenna The Tri-CiTy News

Port Moody Police arrested a man last Wednesday afternoon for allegedly masturbating near a trail in Bert Flinn Park on the city’s north shore. A jogger spotted the man and quickly ran away until she was able

to get her phone and call police. A suspect was arrested in the area and later released on conditions and is facing indecent exposure charges. In a press release, Port Moody Const. Luke van Winkel said people need to aware of their surroundings and should always take steps to ensure their safety when they are alone on the trails. “This includes utilizing

well-lit places whenever possible, running with a friend, carrying a cellular phone, keeping music down or using only one ear-bud when walking or running,” he said. “While incidents like this are rare in the community, they can serve as a reminder to all of us that we must all do our part to keep ourselves and our community safe.” Two similar incidents occurred in Coquitlam in the last few months.

In late September, a man exposed himself in a stairwell at Centennial secondary school; the next month, a man exposed himself near the school. Van Winkel told The Tri-City News the investigation in Port Moody is ongoing and that police would be talking with Coquitlam RCMP investigators to determine if there is any connection between the cases.

Man sought for cab carjacking Coquitlam RCMP are seeking a suspect they believe is responsible for robbing and carjacking a taxi driver just after midnight on Dec. 1. The suspect was picked up in Maple Ridge and the cab was travelling along Broadway Street in Port Coquitlam when he threatened the driver and ordered him to get out of the vehicle. He then drove away with an undisclosed amount of cash. “In cases like this, you shouldn’t argue with the bad guy,” said Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Police are seeking a Caucasian man between the ages of 28 and 32 with a healthy build, a dark, handlebar moustache and a fair complexion; the suspect was wearing a baseball-style

Loaded with gas, van is seized Police have seized yet another van modified with massive tanks to carry stolen gas, this time parked across the street from a Coquitlam elementary school. The cube van was found loaded up with large plastic containers around 6 p.m. last Wednesday. A hazardous materials team was called and it drained about 200 l of gasoline from the tanks. The van was found on Porter Street between Smith Avenue and Como Lake Avenue, close to Porter Street elementary. Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said the vehicle posed a serious safety risk to the surrounding neighbourhood. “Gasoline fumes are extremely flammable,” he said.“It’s basically like driving a bomb in the back of a truck.” The gas van was the fifth discovered in Metro Vancouver in the past two months, following three that were busted in Vancouver and one in Surrey. Vancouver Police Const. Brian Montague said black market gas is nothing new but drivers have been calling in more tips after a dangerous incident in October that saw a van burst into flames on Vancouver’s

busy Oak Street. Three of the last four gas vans were discovered thanks to calls from the public. “It may be a case of where you’re filling up your tank at a gas station and the person next to you or behind you is putting a disproportionate amount of fuel into their vehicle,” Montague said. “It may be someone that’s using multiple cards at a gas pump.” Chevron said it’s training employees to spot and report offenders, and the company is working with police on comprehensive new security measures.

A cube van found on Porter Street in Coquitlam last week — across the street from Porter Street elementary school — contained hundreds of gallons of gasoline. “It’s basically like driving a bomb in the back of a truck,” said Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung.

Recycling changes

PICTURE THIS adrian raeside

M

aybe the hand-over of recycling to Multi Material BC won’t be a disaster. But for the program to work, it has to be two things: userfriendly and cheaper than the current system. Concerns that MMBC was gouging cities with hefty fees for hard-to-achieve low contamination rates seems to have abated. The threshold appears to be attainable and, what’s more, there is a lengthy process that must be followed before cities are docked the fee; as well, cities will have plenty of opportunities to clean up their act before they are slapped with a fine. After some painful beginnings, the industry-led nonprofit organization charged with the responsibility of taking over recycling in B.C. seems to have softened its stance and come to acceptable agreements with cities on how paper packaging, plastics and containers will be dealt with in the future. And for some cities, including Coquitlam and Port Moody, the deal could mean a slight break on utility charges — or at least a slower rise as garbage, water and sewer rates are likely to increase in future. This is important because we know prices for packaged products will rise to cover the cost of the program and people shouldn’t be dinged twice. Still, there is one caveat to this whole project and that is the handling of glass, which won’t be allowed in recycling carts beginning in May. In the case of Port Moody, which has declined to operate a glass depot on behalf of MMBC, a request for proposals will go out to find an operator that can handle these breakables. Thus, it’s important for MMBC to find the right contractor. One idea would be to co-locate glass depots in conveniently located stores. It’s a no-brainer that without convenience, glass will become a big problem — and a potentially messy and dangerous one, at that. If MMBC truly wants to ensure its packaging is dealt with properly, it will do its best to ensure glass drop-off is easy and trouble-free. And if cities want to make sure their contamination rates stay low, they will need to educate residents about expectations and what it could cost them if they throw organic materials or other contaminants into the bin.

Oil, gas and election: Premier looks back at ’13 BC VIEWS Tom Fletcher

A

fter a whirlwind year that started with a comefrom-behind election win, Premier Christy Clark sat down with me for the traditional year-end interview in her Victoria office. Here are excerpts from that discussion: Tom Fletcher: Premier, you surprised a few people this year. What surprised you the most about 2013? Premier Clark: I guess it was the disconnect between the pollsters and the pundits and the public. I did have a sense all the time that the citizens were thinking something different in the run-up to the election campaign. I wondered,‘Am I missing something here or are they missing something?’And I guess it turned out that it wasn’t me that was missing something. Fletcher: The liquefied natural gas export proj-

ect is going to use a lot of natural gas, especially in the early years. Will B.C.’s greenhouse gas reduction targets (20% reduction by 2020, 80% by 2050) have to be changed? Clark: I don’t have a clear answer on that yet. We are working with the companies on exactly how we are going to structure their environmental commitments and costs, and their electricity costs versus using gas, the total royalty tax regime. We’re looking at that as one package. However that turns out, though, this opportunity to export natural gas to Asia is the single biggest opportunity we have ever had as a province to reduce greenhouse gas emissions around the world. In shipping this to China, we are going to help them wean themselves off some of the dirtiest coal anybody’s burning anywhere in the world. Fletcher: If B.C. is going to get credit for displacing coal use in Asia, shouldn’t B.C.’s coal exports, even though it’s metallurgical coal, count in our greenhouse gas total as well?

TRI-CITY nEWS 1405 Broadway St., Port Coquitlam, B.C. V3C 6L6 telephone: 604-525-6397 • fax: 604-944-0703 audited circulation: 52,692

EXTRA ONLINE: A longer version of this interview, with video, can be found under the Opinion tab at www.tricitynews.com. Clark: I know that the academics and pundits are going to get all mired in competing sets of numbers and studies. For me, we have a chance to do good for the world and we’re going to take it. Fletcher: On oil pipelines, your agreement in November with Alberta Premier Alison Redford involves B.C. supporting her effort for a national energy strategy. What do you see it doing in the future? Clark: The big idea that she’s trying to pursue with that is a strategy that will connect us, east to west, in energy. Energy grids are much better connected north to south than they are east to west. So she’s trying to pursue a pan-Canadian strategy for the exchange of energy, whether that’s hydroelectricity or natural gas or what-

ever it is. We haven’t been intimately involved with it until recently, so we’ll see where it goes. Fletcher: There’s a perception out there, fuelled by the opposition, that you campaigned against oil pipelines and now you’re turning the tanker around, as it were, to be in support of them. What do you say to that? Clark: It’s typical of the other guys to reinterpret and misquote. That’s what they do, they’re in opposition. What I said was: We have five conditions that must be met in order for heavy oil to be considered to go ahead in British Columbia. That has not changed. The five conditions remain in place. As of today, none of them have been met. The only thing that is different today, from before the election, is that now I no longer stand alone in supporting the five conditions. I have one other premier supporting me, and that’s Alison Redford.

Thanks for the hand when her drive went nuts The Editor: Good Samaritans do exist, as I discovered on Dec. 11. While driving west on Clarke Road in Coquitlam, I suddenly heard a thump. A flat tire, I thought, so I slowly manoeuvred my car to the curb lane, hoping to roll it to the visible side street, Kemsley Avenue. However, the car stopped mid-intersection, blocking traffic. Much to my horror, I discovered that all the lug nuts from a newly installed front tire were gone, and the wheel had come off. Had I been on the highway, as planned, where the traffic is faster and heavier, a runaway tire from a moving vehicle could have been disastrous, especially during rush hour. A construction worker, who I later discovered had previously been a Kal Tire manager, immediately jumped into action, setting up safety

The Editor, Re. “Moore apologizes for ‘insensitive’ remarks” (tricitynews.com, Dec. 16). I know I am not alone when I express my disgust with MP James Moore’s insensitive and shameful comments with regards to child poverty not being his problem. Perhaps instead of apologizing, MP Moore will consider hosting a breakfast for malnourished children. With 153,000 poor children in B.C. alone, he need only rent Rogers Arena eight times to serve each child just one breakfast. These children are not just hungry. They do not

federal and provincial studies that recently recommended more spill response resources and tightened regulations. The 37-binder facilities application detailing Kinder Morgan’s plans consists of 15,000 pages that stack seven feet high. (It’s available online at application.transmountain.com.) About 73% of the route will follow the existing 60-year-old pipeline’s right-of-way. But the remainder breaks away

onto new ground, often following other utility corridors or highways, in order to avoid pipeline construction in heavily developed parts of the Lower Mainland. While the company will pay more in property tax to municipalities transected by the pipeline, Anderson said the company also expects to agree to additional benefits on a community-bycommunity basis. Municipal wish lists range from playground

equipment to new trails and bike paths. Reconstruction of the burned-down Mossom Creek Hatchery in Port Moody might be one way for the company to contribute there, he said. The filing triggers a 15-month NEB-led public regulatory review, including public hearings. Like Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway pipeline, the Trans Mountain expansion would increase exports of heavy crude oil from Alberta’s oil sands. The Enbridge project has already been through public hearings and an NEB decision is imminent.

Kinder Morgan Canada says it expects tankers carrying oil from an expanded Trans Mountain pipeline will be flanked by escort tugs from Burrard Inlet all the way to open ocean and be protected from other vessels by a recommended exclusion zone. The company sought to allay fears of a catastrophic crude oil spill in the Salish Sea Monday as it filed its long-expected formal application with the National Energy Board to twin the existing Trans Mountain oil pipeline from Alberta to its Burnaby tanker terminal. The $5.4-billion expansion would nearly triple the existing pipeline’s capacity to 890,000 barrels of oil per day. If approved, it would mean 400 oil tankers a year sailing through Vancouver harbour, up from about 60 now. Mike Davis, Kinder Morgan’s director of marine development, said the proposed “moving safety zone” would ban other vessels from coming within a set distance of a laden tanker, likely at least 500 metres, to reduce the risk of collision. Canadian and U.S. Coast Guard officials would decide the appropriate size of the no-go zone, he said, as they have the regulatory authority to put it in place. Current regulations require laden tankers to be accompanied by tug boats only in the Vancouver harbourBurrard Inlet area and in the Gulf Islands from Saturna Island to Race Rocks. Davis said Kinder Morgan recommends tugs also be mandatory where tankers now move unaccompanied — in the Strait of Georgia, from the Lions Gate Bridge to Saturna, and from Victoria right up the coast of Vancouver Island to the entrance to Juan de Fuca Strait. An assessment concluded extra tug requirements in those two areas would significantly reduce the risk of a tanker losing power and drifting onto rocks, he said. The company is also backing improved marine spill response requirements that Davis said would cut in half the response time of up to 72 hours in the Salish Sea. Kinder Morgan Canada president Ian Anderson said tankers have moved safely for 60 years but supported

Fire Safety - this Holiday Season The holiday season is a time to gather with friends and family. The Tri-Cities Fire Departments recommend the following simple tips to help keep you, your family and your home safe this holiday season. Candles

Christmas Trees

♦ Extinguish all candles when leaving the room or going to sleep.

♦ If using a fresh cut tree – select one with a strong green colour and the needles are difficult to pull from the branches.

♦ Keep candles at least 30 cm (1’) away from anything that can burn; such as clothing, bedding, books, curtains or Christmas trees.

♦ Make a fresh cut off the bottom of the tree and be sure to immerse the trunk in water. Replenish daily.

♦ Use sturdy non-tip, non- combustible candle holders that are large enough to collect dripping wax.

♦ Place your tree at least 1 m (3’) clear from any heat sources and clear of all exits.

♦ If a power outage occurs, use a flashlight instead of candles.

♦ If the tree is artificial, be sure that it is labeled, certified or identified by the manufacturer as fire-retardant.

♦ Choose battery operated “flameless” candles as a great alternative to open flame candles. They are readily available and add a nice ambiance to your home without the risk.

Holiday Lights

Cooking

♦ Check all light sets prior to using. Discard any frayed or damaged sets.

♦ Never leave cooking unattended, especially when cooking with oil or grease.

♦ Use approved light sets only. DO NOT OVERLOAD CIRCUITS.

♦ If a pot catches fire, carefully slide a tight fitting lid over the pot to smother the flames.

♦ Use proper clips instead of staples to hang outdoor lights.

♦ Always turn off the lights before leaving home or going to bed.

♦ If a fire ignites on the stove, in the oven or in the microwave oven; turn off the heat source. ♦ Never use water on a grease fire.

Heating ♦ Space heaters should always be plugged directly into an outlet – never use an extension cord. ♦ Turn off space heaters when the room is not occupied or when going to bed.

WORKING SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES! ENSURE THERE IS ONE ON EVERY LEVEL OF YOUR HOME.

Have a safe and happy holiday season from your Tri-Cities Fire Departments.

♦ Always keep all combustibles at least 1 m (3’) clear of space heaters. ♦ Ensure all your home-heating appliances (furnace, gas fireplace, wood-burning appliances & chimneys) are in good, clean working condition and serviced on a regular basis. Coquitlam Fire/Rescue 604-927-6400

Fabulous fiction for middle school-age readers A GOOD READ Reta Pyke

C

anadian literature for children and teens has expanded in the last few years. You may be surprised to see what Canadian publishers have produced this year. The following are five novels that are great reads to share with (or give) the middle school kid in your life: Prince Puggly of Spud and the Kingdom of Spiff is the second novel Robert Paul Weston has written entirely in rhyming verse. Puggly has been appointed Prince of Spud in place of the absent king. Over in neighbouring Spiff, the king cannot

convince his daughter to get off her tower of pillows and wear something other than pyjamas for their upcoming ball. What will happen when father and daughter are ridiculed by their ultra-fashionable guests? How can the

terminally unfashionable Puggly fulfill his duties and attend the Spiffian ball when he has never been to a party in his life. An enjoyable combination of Dr. Seuss and Roald Dahl, this is a great novel to read aloud to with your children or class. If you’re interested, Weston’s first novel in rhyming verse is the rollicking adventure Zorgamazoo, complete with plucky heroine, creatures from the underworld, space aliens and lobotomies. Jack Lime is an amateur detective and high school student who agrees to solve cases for his fellow students in return for future favours. But the life of a detective isn’t easy, especially when you have

to navigate the politics of high school, stay on the good side of the principal and fight off the occasional bout of narcolepsy. In The Further Adventures of Jack Lime by James Leck, Lime is at it again. This time, he’s investigating game fixing, art theft and evil corporations. This is excellent middle school crossed with film noir. Jane, the Fox and Me by Fanny Brit and illustrated by Isabelle Arsenault is a moving graphic novel written for a middle school audience but it speaks to any age. Hélène has become an outcast, shunned and tormented by people who her once her friends. Ostracized, depressed and alone, Hélène feels she cannot turn to her already

overworked mother; instead, she finds solace in Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. The minimal, poetic text and muted illustrations highlight the bleakness with which Hélène sees her world. This is an emotional book to be read with eyes, and heart, wide open. Jewish summer camp is not Dahlia Sherman’s idea of a good time. But instead of the boredom and drudgery she expected, Dahlia is greeted by two ghost girls, an old overgrown hedge maze and the mystery of disappearing campers. Soon, Dahlia is lost in the maze and deep into the mystery, using all her math club analytical skills and her magic sleight of hand to escape. Path of Names by Ari Goelman

is a unique adventure combining a nerdy heroine, Jewish folklore and a ghost story with the normal anxieties of summer camp, fitting in and sibling rivalry. It is a great book for someone looking for something different, or for that kid who has read everything. Adam is spending the summer at a seaside campground with his family, which would have made it the best summer ever except that his best friend decided to abandon him and stay home to look after a sick dog. A constantly rotating cast of friends livens up Adam’s summer and provides a distraction from his annoying family but it is Theo’s magical stories

about driftwood that make Adam’s summer the most amazing and eye-opening. Driftwood is awardwinning author Valerie Sherrard’s latest addition to her list of moving youth literature. Sherrard’s life-like characters draw you into this beautifully written novel, then Theo’s driftwood folktales reach out in profound ways. These are just a few of the fabulous Canadian books for kids published this year. Visit the library to find these or for more suggestions on other great new titles. A Good Read is a column by Tri-City librarians that is published every Wednesday. Reta Pyke works at Port Moody Public Library.

GRANTS AVAIlABlE: Coquitlam, PoMo

More grants in ’14 from Coquitlam Foundation The Coquitlam Foundation will be giving out a variety of grants to community groups in 2014. Along with a notice that the foundation is now accepting applications for grants, bursaries and scholarships, the foundation announced it recently created the new Coquitlam Foundation Community Fund (CFCF). Under the CFCF, the foundation will be better able to make grants in several areas, including: fine arts, performing arts and literacy; community wellness; culture; education; environment; and heritage. “This exciting new fund amalgamates sev-

eral older foundationdirected funds into one large, flexible fund,” foundation Chair Julie Fisher said in a press release. “Previously, the structure of our foundation-directed funds made it increasingly difficult to provide grants in areas other than those related to arts and culture. With the new CFCF, we have now positioned ourselves to respond to a broad range of requests.” Applicat ions for grants, bursaries and scholarships are being accepted until 4 p.m., Feb. 14. More information and forms are available at coquitlamfoundation.com Successful applicants will be notified in May

and will be invited to attend the Coquitlam Foundation awards celebration evening June 5 at the Evergreen Cultural Centre. Last year, the foundation distributed $114,000. In addition to its own foundation-directed funds, the Coquitlam Foundation manages 21 donor-advised funds on behalf of various groups, families and individuals. Its total endowment is now more than $2.5 million. The Coquitlam Foundation is pleased to accept donations to any of its funds c/o 1207 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam, B.C., Canada, V3B 7Y3; or through its website.

PoMo Foundation is now taking grant applications The Port Moody Foundation is kicking off its next grant cycle and seeks letters of interest from eligible registered charity organizations needing financial support in 2014 for projects and programs that will benefit Port Moody. In 2013, the PoMo Foundation provided about $5,000 in grants to help local registered charities fulfill their goals of serving the community. Grants of $500 to $2,000 may be given this year and letters of interest should be submitted by Friday, Jan. 23 to: Port

Moody Foundation, 300 Ioco Road, Port Moody, BC, V3H 2V7. A copy should also be e-mailed to paul_thiel@telus.net. Letters of Interest should be limited to one page and outline a project or program that fits with the funding areas identified in the Foundation’s mission: social, cultural, ecological and recreational. The foundation will review all submissions and create a short list of those that best meet the funding criteria. Organizations selected will be notified in February and will be

requested to submit a more detailed funding application by March 8; successful grant applicants will be notified in May. “We are pleased that through our annual grant program we can assist these organizations in their work to enrich our community,” Port Moody Foundation president Robert Simons said in a press release. Magic man does his best work at home with his kids By Janis Warren

I

The Tri-CiTy NeWs

t’s been a pretty memorable year for Tony Chris. In May, the Tri-City magic man won two awards: the Close Up Magician of the Year from the Vancouver Magic Circle and the Stage Show Magician of the Year from the Fraser Valley Magic Circle. And, in June, he clinched the Children’s Entertainer of the Year accolades from both organizations. The four recognitions follow his success from last year when he became the only Canadian ever to win an international magic prize in the category of mentalism, from the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians in Seattle. “I just happen to be on a roll ZAny ZACk with winning,” he said from his River Springs home last week. Chris, whose real name is Tony Kazoleas, has been fascinated with the craft for 30 years and, these days, performs about 200 shows a year under the stage moniker Zany Zack. Kids’ birthday parties are his bread and butter.“I get such a rush from the smiles and the laughter and the applause,” he said. “For them, it’s a type of escapism from reality.” The same can be said for Chris, who grew up in rural Alberta in the 1970s and ‘80s with an “old world” Greek family. He had a strict upbringing and found solace in music. He sang and played guitar with a heavy-metal band called Gothica, which toured North America and Europe. But magic was also a love. At the age of four, he became entranced with the art form when his uncle pulled a coin from his ear. As a teen, his mother would drive him to the small public library where Chris would repeatedly check out the first volume of the Tarbell Course of Magic, which formed the foundation for his future career. “Magic was a small hobby that I did for the neighbourhood kids,” he recalled. “I would sell lemonade and they would get a free magic show with their drink.” Chris moved to B.C. in 1992 and studied law. Realizing it was a bad decision, he dropped out and, while unemployed, he was channel surfing one day when he fell onto a children’s program that had a magician who showed a card trick — and explained how he did it. The wheels in Chris’ head started to turn. He jumped up and grabbed the Yellow Pages to search for the nearest magic store. Luckily, there was one nearby and he went over and bought Mark Wilson’s Complete Course in Magic. “It was a pivotal moment for me,”he said. His wife, Penney, was supportive as Chris began a career in magic. By then, he had a day job and, at night, honed his repertoire, knowing that one day he would perform full-time. His magic career began to gain traction when their daughter, Shayla, was born. But all was not well. Chris could sense something wasn’t normal as she didn’t speak and had little eye contact. At three, he and Penney took in their child for a series of medical tests; she was diagnosed with autism. “Everything in our lives turned upside down,” he said. Five years later — and knowing there was a 50/50 chance any future siblings would also have the disorder — the pair had Dimitri. Again, they went to see specialists when he was three and got the same result. While Shayla is considered moderate high-functioning, Dimitri is mild high-functioning and is able to go to school. Chris and his wife recently pulled Shayla out from her Grade 10 year “because it just wasn’t working,”he said. Chris said his family challenges have taken a toll on his magic job. There have been times when busi-

He also travelled less than other professional magicians to be closer to home. “It’s hard to juggle two autistic kids and a career,”he said. But, lately, with the wins and Penney now homeschooling Shayla as well as the kids getting older and more independent, Chris is coping better — though, he admits, he worries constantly about the future.

He is helping Shayla to write and record music for a new CD (Chris has released three children’s albums). He is also watching his nine-year-old son — a Grade 4 student at Coquitlam River elementary — grow into a fine young man and, most of all, he is thanking his blessings for marrying a strong woman. “It has been quite an adventure full of ups and downs and I wouldn’t trade it for the world,”Chris said. jwarren@tricitynews.com

Adjudicator Susan Bertoia selected Heritage’s Define: Love as the representative for School District 43 at the Sears Association of BC Drama Educators’ (ABCDE) Festival. She singled out the piece for its strong ensemble and solo work, said Riverside secondary drama teacher Nicole Roberge, who organized MetFest 2013 — a three-night showcase of one-act plays. This year’s MetFest saw an array of presentations from TriCity high schools: Pinetree (Here We Are and Seeing the Light); Dr. Charles Best (Death); Gleneagle (Back to the Future); Terry Fox (The Actor’s Nightmare); Heritage Woods (Colin’s Play and Playbuilt); Centennial (The Potman); Riverside (Trojan Women, and 15-Minute Hamlet); and Archbishop Carney regional secondary (The Importance of Being Earnest). The Sears ABCDE Festival happens April 30 to May 4, 2014, at Douglas College in New Westminster. ln 2011, Port Coquitlam’s Terry Fox secondary — under the direction of teacher Dan Tilsley — won four provincial accolades for outstanding acting in male and female roles in Putnam County Spelling Bee as well as outstanding choreography and musical virtuosity. And last year, the Riverside cast and crew of Grim won best visual design as well as outstanding ensemble. jwarren@tricitynews.com

Rosenthal brings veteran leadership By Dan Ebenal The Tri-CiTy News

Montvale, New Jersey is a long way from Coquitlam. But watching Ryan Rosenthal on the ice with the Express you’d swear that he’s right at home. Rosenthal joined the Express this year as a 20 year old, after playing six games with the University of Vermont Catamounts last year. “When I decided to take a year of junior my assistant coach knew [Express coach] Barry Wolff here and put me in touch with him. Barry was really excited about it so I got excited and it all worked out for the best,”said Rosenthal. And it didn’t take long for Rosenthal to fit in, being named captain in his first BCHL season and quickly displaying a knack around the net that translates well in any league. “Since day one he’s been a leader. When we need a big goal he puts the team on his back and he creates it or finds it or scores it,” said Wolff. “I can’t say enough about him. Those are the kinds of kids you wish you had 20 of.” The 6’2” 200-pound forward has racked up 20 goals and 42 points in 33 games with the Express this season, good enough to put him in the top 10 in BCHL scoring. “I’ve been lucky so far and my team helps

Rosenthal (above right) celebrates one of his team-leading 20 goals on the year. me with that,” said Rosenthal, adding he never expected to be among the league leaders coming into the season. “But obviously it’s fun to get points.”

But Rosenthal’s skills aren’t only limited to the offensive zone. He also plays a key role in penalty killing, taking key face offs and being called on to help

preserve a lead late in games. “I try to do a little bit of everything,” he said. “Obviously here I’m looked to to score some goals but I’m also one

of the bigger and older guys so they also look for me to be physical and create space for guys like [Adam] Rockwood and [Corey] Mackin.” Rosenthal said there’s

no one player he models his game after, although growing up in New Jersey, Patrick Elias, the Devils all-time leading scorer, has always been a favourite.

“I sort of take different things from different players,” he said. “There’s guys like Patrick Kane and [Alex] Ovechkin and obviously [Sidney] Crosby that have certain skills that you always look up to so I kind of try to take things from everybody but Elias was always my go-to guy.” After the season, Rosenthal plans on returning to the U.S. east coast, having accepted a scholarship to attend Northeastern University. “It’s right in Boston which is an awesome city. My older brother went to Northeastern so I know the school pretty well. When I went on my visit I felt right at home.” And when he takes to the ice with the Huskies next season, Rosenthal is convinced his time spent in the BCHL will have prepared him to move on to the next level. “I definitely will be more ready to go this time around in terms of responsibility in the D zone,” he said. “It’s a really offensive league so if you let down defensively team are going to capitalize.” sports@tricitynews.com

Eagles need double-overtime to get past Express By Dan Ebenal The Tri-CiTy News

The Coquitlam Express battled back from a two-goal deficit only to fall victim to Jonah Renouf’s overtime magic Sunday night. The Surrey Eagles’ leading scorer found the back of the net in double-overtime to hand the visiting Express a 5-4 loss. “[Renouf] made a nice play and delayed and

kind of decked our guy out and put it in. It was a great play by them,” Express coach Barry Wolff said of the overtime winner. Surrey jumped out to a 1-0 lead before Cameron Marks scored on the power play to bring the Express even at the end of the first. The Eagles scored twice early in the middle frame before Jackson Cressey brought the Express within one.

Corey Mackin notched Coquitlam’s league-leading 12th shorthanded goal to notch things at 3-3. Mackin scored again to give the Express their first lead of the game but Nicolas Pierog brought Surrey even again just 37 seconds later. The Express had a number of chances in a scoreless third period, capped off when Eagles net minder Devon Fordyce stoned Adam

Rockwood in the final 35 seconds and then turned away the rebound attempt by Ryan Rosenthal. “We had chances to score, their goalie came up big at the right time,” said Wolff. “We had a few chances late but we just couldn’t get it by the guy.” The Eagles outshot Coquitlam 40-33 with Gordie Defiel turning aside 35 shots in the Express net. Rockwood

and Rosenthal each notched a pair of assists to remain in the top 10 of BCHL scoring. The Express surrendered three first-period goals to the visiting Nanaimo Clippers who cruised to a 6-3 win Friday night. “We came out and didn’t play well at all in the first period but then we recovered. We probably lost the game in the first period for whatever

reason,” said Wolff, adding the Express continue to have problems turning in a consistent 60-minute effort. “We’ve been battling that all year and we’re trying to figure it out. It’s all a maturity thing and sooner or later hopefully we can figure it out.” Bo Pieper had two goals and one assist while Canon Pieper notched a goal and a helper. Defiel made 27

Donald H Swank Passed away peacefully Dec. 10, 2013 at Crossroads Hospice in Coquitlam. He was born in Vancouver on June 6, 1923 and grew up in Surrey BC. Dad graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School in 1941, and worked in local sawmills until November 1942 when he volunteered to join the RCAF. Dad proudly served his country and became a bomb aimer. He was posted to England in Oct 1944. His fiancé Geraldine Wood was also in the RCAF and they were married in London in February 1945. They returned from the war where Dad found a job working for New Westminster Tire and Rubber. Dad then worked for the Prudential Life Insurance Company until 1953. He again switched careers and worked for BC Telephone Co as a cable splicer/trouble shooter. Dad earned the nickname “The Overtime King” at BC Tel as he very rarely refused overtime and also was the “go to” guy for difficult jobs. Dad retired from BC Tel in 1987. In 1957 he purchased a lot in Coquitlam and built his own house which they moved to in 1959. Dad’s hobbies included tending his large vegetable garden, radio and TV repair, wine making ( he boasted that his blackberry wine cost $.25 per bottle) and he loved playing bridge at the Dogwood Seniors center. In addition he dabbled in the stock market and joined an investment club. Dad was predeceased by Mom and his 3 siblings. He is survived by his children Frances Tutt (David), Wendy Bell (Greg), Sue Wheeler (Doug), Evelyn Hill (Joe) James Swank (Hana), ten grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held in the St. Mary’s Anglican Church Hall Sapperton in New Westminster, Saturday Dec. 21 at 2 pm. The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at the Crossroads Hospice their excellent care and support. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Salvation Army or The Crossroads Hospice Society. To leave online messages of condolence please visit www.burquitlamfunerals.com

Michael Hind

For most, the process behind property assessment calculations is confusing. How did they get to that number? Why does the building across the road have a lower or higher value than this one? Is there anything I can do about this?

share a joint presentation where they review how they set the business property tax rate. I think it is fantastic that the three cities are working together on this presentation as, obviously, there are similarities in their processes. With all the growth throughout the Tri-Cities, there have been some changes in the assessments in the past that have concerned business owners. This workshop is a chance to educate businesses on the process and their options. We welcome all business owners or business property owners in the Tri-Cities to this free workshop. Enjoy a free lunch and learn about the decision-making processes that affect your bottom line.

These are all fair questions that are asked by most business owners and business property owners. As they say, knowledge is power; so, the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Cities of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody as well as the BC Assessment Authority, will be hosting a free workshop to help educate businesses on how the property assessment system works, and how cities determine the business tax rate.

Event details: What: Business Assessment and Taxation 101 Workshop When: January 8th, 2014 11:30am to 2:00pm Where: Coquitlam City Hall Council Chambers, 3000 Guildford Way, Coquitlam Registration: This is a free event. Lunch will be provided. Pre-registration is required at www. tricitieschamber.com or 604.464.2716. We hope to see you there, Michael Hind Executive Director, Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce

The folks at BC Assessment – North Fraser Region will be joining us January 8th, 2014 at Coquitlam City Hall to explain the assessment process and the rights of the land owner. This should be an interesting presentation that helps answer the question ‘how did they get to that number?’.

If you’re a Chamber member, your feedback is vital in our continued efforts to improve our programs, services and communication. Everyone who takes the time to answer the survey will be entered into a draw to win $50 to our December Restaurant of the Month the John B Pub and a $100 gift card to Coquitlam Centre! Congratulations to our 2013 Chamber Member of the Year, Mark Pettie!

M

ark, owner of Pettie Insurance and Financial Services grew up in Port Coquitlam and has been active in the community for many years. He has served on the Port Coquitlam Spirit Committee since 2009 and sponsored and organized the Rising Stars Recognition Night honoring athletes that represented the city and province at national and international competitions. In 2010, he made presentations to all three city councils to gain support to bring the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay to the Tri-Cities. As a result of his efforts, the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay came to the Tri-Cities where thousands of people experienced the Olympic torch relay. Lately, he has been active with the Coquitlam Express Hockey Club in founding the Canucks Alumni night which raised $3500 for the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation. He has also served on the Chamber Board of Directors where he was actively involved in the Gala and Golf Tournament committees. As if he wasn’t busy enough, this year he coChaired the Coquitlam Terry Fox run, which saw the fundraising increase from $3000 to $14,500 and participation from 200 to over 500. We’re happy to honour Mark as our Chamber Member of the Year for 2013. Congratulations!

INDEPENDENT REFRIGERATION is a commercial HVAC-R company servicing the Tri-Cities and Lower Mainland since 2002. We offer HVAC-R services for new construction, commercial tenant improvement, maintenance programs, and 24/7 service. In addition, INDEPENDENT REFRIGERATION is a bonded gas contractor and sheet metal contractor.

Founded in 1983, Société francophone de Maillardville is a non-profit organization that was formed by combining 11 existing francophone associations serving the francophone community of about 13,000 people. The Society primarily offers services and activities in French and promotes francophone and Francophile culture.

As a family owned and operated business, we enjoy supporting other members of our own community, people who are passionate about their businesses and their families. Our professional staff provides reliable service and use industry leading equipment to ensure all your commercial needs are met. INDEPENDENT REFRIGERATION prides itself on offering customers environmentally conscientious choices for equipment and materials. “INDEPENDENT REFRIGERATION was started with a single goal in mind: to provide reliable and consistent service to our customers. Ten years later we are a growing team dedicated to identifying our customers’ needs and providing the best solution. The goal remains the same today. Our customers know us as professional and friendly. We provide high quality HVAC equipment and materials paired with environmentally friendly solutions. We take safety seriously; our team has the right tools and training and embed safety in everything they do.” – Michael Murray, Owner INDEPENDENT REFRIGERATION 105-1730 Coast Meridian, Port Coquitlam www.independentrefrigeration.com 604.837.9830

One of the most rewarding tasks we perform is helping new immigrants settle into their new country and ensure they are set for success. These new families, mostly from central and eastern Africa, need help finding employment, adapting to a new lifestyle, and fitting into a new community. It is always such a privilege to be a part of their journey. Another favourite thing about what we do is our Festival du Bois! The Festival is the largest francophone festival on the West Coast of Canada with about 15,000 attendees every year. It has real community spirit, which is highlighted every year by the hundreds of volunteers helping us making the event a success and the many local sponsors financial support. Our upcoming festival in 2014 marks our 25th Anniversary! Société francophone de Maillardville has been a Tri-Cities Chamber member for 15 years now and this relation has allowed us to meet with many new local businesses. The Chamber visibility and presence in the community help increase our Tri-Cities profile, which positively impacts the local economy. Société francophone de Maillardville is pleased to be able to contribute in this area through our annual 3-day festival. Welcome

We’d love to introduce ourselves. We are Cloud 9 Float Spa – your ultimate source for a unique and tranquil float experience. Imagine yourself immersed in 11” of warm, soothing water, filled with 900lbs of cleansing Epsom salts, in a float tank or tub environment. Everything is quiet… the lights are dim, and you’re floating effortlessly, unplugging from reality in your own private sanctuary, complete with all of the essentials. This is the start of your floating experience.

But why? Floatation tanks are already well known in the European market, with popularity rising in North America. Floatation therapy is a scientifically proven method of stress relief, with a wide range of health benefits. These include pain relief, stress relief, enhanced athletic performance, increased relaxation and calm, enhanced creativity and much, much more. My Why? Opening Cloud 9 Float Spa has been one of my dreams for the last 6 years. There are many reasons why I was attracted to this specific business, but at my core there was one reason that really fueled my fire. We are all here to grow, expand and learn but many of us are too busy in our lives to slow down and take some personal time to recharge. The average person is running day after day, leading to potential burnout and illness. The float tank encourages you to live in the present moment, bringing your attention to the now. It is one of my passions in life to help others grow and achieve their goals and desires. I have experienced some amazing changes in people even after a couple of float sessions. We are creatures of habit (not always good habits); the floating environment brings clarity to things in one’s life and makes it easier for people take positive actions in their life, if they are open to it. I love offering a space where people come and unplug from there busy day and let it all go. Floating allows a person to slow down, recharge and most importantly learn more about themselves by listening to their body and mind. It’s in these moments of stillness that we truly learn and grow. I encourage you to stop by for a tour at 1192 Lansdowne Dr. in Coquitlam or please give me a call on my cell at 604-308-7412, so you can see and feel my passion for Cloud 9 Float Spa! You can reach the spa at 778-809-0902 as well. We also currently have some amazing Christmas specials on Gift Cards and float packages featuring over 20% off our regular rates. For chamber members mention the promo code ‘Chamber’ and receive $10 off your next float experience at Cloud 9.
