Co-op Shopping Spree
Sam Redding Omineca Express The school district held its ninth annual Project Health where likeminded students travel to St. John Hospital in Vanderhoof to learn from health care professionals. Twenty-four students who have been carefully vetted for their interest in health care got to spend their time listening to presentations from dietitians, nurses, occupational therapists and doctors. The dietician showed students the shocking amount of sugar that is in different drinks and described to them how planning meals for seniors and patients can be difficult with so many factors to take into account. “The students basically get an all access pass to the hospital and its staff,” said Darren Carpenter, district coordinator. “They have a chance to get exposed to basically everything from top to bottom in this facility from administration to nursing to X-ray technicians in the lab even the folks who run the cafeteria and the pharmacy.” Carmen Funk the original winner of the Co-op shopping spree contest decided to donate two of her three minutes to the Vanderhoof Kinettes and the Saik’uz First Nations. The Funk’s also decided to double each persons credit limit allowing the Kinettes and Saik’uz to receive $400 worth of goods from the store. “This action of the Funk’s is truly the meaning of Christmas,” said Joe von Doellen, Operations Manager at Vanderhoof Co-op. Pictured:Carmen Funk, Jasmine Thomas from Saik’uz and Natalia Moe from Kinettes show off how much they managed to grab in one minute of serious shopping. Head nurse Heather Floris took the students on a tour of her part of the hospital where they were allowed to handle placentae as well as have a look at a little baby. They also had the students go through the motions of what a pharmacist would do, making blister packs for patients using candy just to illustrate how to give someone pills that they have to take. The advantages to doing it in a smaller centre are that, every year, there’s always something that pops up that the students might be interested in such as a doctor cleaning a patients abrasions, with everyone’s permission of course. The students also get to travel to Prince

George and interact with the health care professionals working there. The BC Ambulance Service set up a presentation to show the students what they do and how they got to work there. The students also get to tour the gene school at UNBC which is an actual university lab, the professor there has been with Project Health since day one. It won’t be a whole lot different from high school labs but because it’s at a university setting the students have a chance to see what they’ll be getting into if they choose this particular route of health care science. “It’s not a tour, its a full-on, hands-on
exposure to everything in the health field,” said Carpenter. “It allows students to see what they’re getting into and what specific areas of health care they might want to focus on.” This program is provincially unique, no where else in BC are students given opportunities like this. “We’re pretty proud of it,” said Carpenter. “We vet the students very heavily so they come for the right reasons, in all our projects we expect a higher level of maturity. It doesn’t matter if you’re jumping on a skidder or seeing someone who has some lesions, we expect a certain attitude and this is no different.”

Team We’re The Millers shows off their robot they designed and programmed themselves. Sam Redding Omineca Express The grade seven students at Sinkut View elementary have been working with robots since September and last week they took part in a competition. The students programmed little robots the size of remote control cars and put them through challenges on a board that was made to look like a city street on Wednesday, December 11. Maria Devauld is their teacher and she has been getting the students together twice a week to work on their robots for four months now. “I think it introduces them to science and technology and it shows them how math works in the real world,” said Devauld. “There’s a lot of math based calculations like the circumference of wheels, how far they’ll go and then taking that information and calculating what variables to put into the program in order to get it to do what they want. It’s fun way of getting them into science. The competition is based on the First Lego League which has new challenges each year, this year’s was called Nature’s Fury. The course was filled with natural disasters and the students had to find a way to remove downed power poles and get past buildings all the while carrying objects back and forth. “The First Lego League stands for fostering
Maria Devauld’s grade seven class took part in a robotics competition that was themed under Nature’s Fury. interest in science and technology so its basically building with lego to accomplish all these different tasks,” said Devauld. Each student started with generic robots but over time they changed it to suit themselves and what they wanted to do with it, like adding larger arms and the like. Most of them were using the NXT programming language on the robots but one group was actually using robot C which is a take on one of the computing industries main languages. NXT involves the use of icons to represent actions and then the students string together the icons to create a program that the robot will follow.
District of Fort St. James named in civil suit Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier The District of Fort St. James has been named in a civil suit stemming from the alleged sexual assaults of three female volunteer firefighters by former fire chief Rob Bennett. The notice of civil claim for the suit details the alleged harassment and assaults the women experienced as members of the Fort St. James Volunteer Fire Department while Bennett was fire chief. The three plaintiffs Kirstin Rudolph, Lisa Button, and Joy Reierson have filed the notice of claim, which states: “Between 2005 and 2013, Bennett, while acting as the district’s fire chief, sexually assaulted and sexually harassed each of the plaintiffs while the plaintiffs were engaged in activities directly and indirectly related to their duties as volunteer fire fighters for the district.”
The claim details graphic specifics of the assaults on the women. The account of the alleged assaults on Rudolph by Bennett specifies grabbing parts of her body and repeated verbal sexual harassment until 2013 and specifically, “on or about the 18 of July 2013, pulling her hair and grabbing her breasts while making sexually harassing and lewd statements.” The account of the alleged sexual assaults and harassment upon Button by Bennett also described graphic touching of her body. The incidents allegedly occurred between 2006 and 2011 and “repeated verbal sexual harassment until 2011.” The suit alleges on April 4, 2013 Bennett exposed himself and “forcibly detained Reierson and attempted to engage in sexual intercourse with her.” The three plaintiffs say in the claim they have sustained damages including:
fear, anxiety and depression; personality changes; adverse impact on their relationships to spouses, family and friends; avoidance of appearing for volunteer firefighting assignments, and; insomnia. The claim further alleges that during most or all of the incidents Bennett was “visibly either moderately or heavily intoxicated by alcohol which was facilitated by the district knowingly allowing him to maintain alcohol on the fire department premises.” The statement claims “up until his resignation, the district knew or ought to have known that Bennett had instilled an atmosphere of fear amongst its female volunteer firefighters, who believed reporting his conduct would lead to recrimination and jeopardize their prospects for advancement and to earn income from the district as volunteers.” The suit then goes on to say the district should have
known Bennett was unfit to perform his duties, because the district had to appoint a driver for him as a result of his driver’s licence suspension and there were reportedly other complaints involving consuming alcohol while operating district vehicles, even allegedly arriving at fire scenes. “Given the conduct of Bennett, the district knew or ought to have known that Bennett was likely engaged in sexual misconduct toward female volunteer firefighters in addition to such misconduct being actually witnessed by, and directly and indirectly, reported to the district by other volunteer firefighters.” The claim further states the “district is vicariously responsible for the acts of its fire chief towards the plaintiff and is liable in damages.” The three plaintiffs are seeking damages from the defendants but the specifics have not yet been deter-
mined. The District of Fort St. James was served papers on Dec. 5 and has until Dec. 26 to respond to the suit. It is unconfirmed whether Bennett, who is also named and currently stands criminally charged with three counts of sexual assault, has been formally served. He is scheduled to appear again in court in relation to these charges on Jan. 20, 2014. Jon Duncan, the lawyer for the three women, was requesting permission from his clients before speaking to the press. Kevin Crook, chief administrative officer for the District of Fort St. James said the District can not comment on the matter as it is before the courts except to say: “It is an unfortunate situation and we hope it will be resolved quickly.” Requests for comment by the Courier to Rob Bennett were not immediately returned.

Age-friendly British Columbia grant Sam Redding Omineca Express Vanderhoof seniors will be receiving $20,000 from the agefriendly BC grant that will go towards encouraging seniors to participate in the community garden. This grant is part of a program aimed at getting seniors healthy
and engaged. Twenty-six communities across the province are receiving these grants which are awarded by a committee of staff from the Union of British Columbia Municipalities and the Ministry of Health. It has funded over 200 projects aimed at keeping seniors active, healthy and independent. “The intent of this is to first
make the community garden accessible to seniors and those with mobility issues and second is to make that connection with the youth through the farm to school program,” said Tom Clement, Deputy Administrator and Director of Corporate Services for Vanderhoof. “The intent is that the seniors will mentor the kids on gardening and that kind of

The first load went over the scales on Dec. 4, 2013 at the soon to be completed Babine Forest Products mill in Burns Lake. Babine mill workers and management who could take time away from a very busy worksite - more than 150 workers are on site on most days for the rebuild - gathered for a sub-zero ribbon cutting at the weigh scales.
First logs for new Babine mill Yard hopefully filled and mill processing logs before end of March
It was a perfect Burns Lake winter day - sunny, clear, and cold - when driver Dave Konkin delivered the first load of logs to the yard of the under-construction Babine Forest Products mill near Burns Lake. Konkin, whose father also drove for Babine, has been with the company for 27 years, and was a mill-worker before becoming a driver. “It feels good to bring the first load in,” he said. The original mill was destroyed in January, 2012, in a tragic explosion and fire which saw the loss of two workers’ lives and injured many more. The rebuild of the mill was, for a long time, an open question in the Burns Lake community. Construction was able to get underway with full force last spring once winter loosened its grip. With more than 150 workers on site on any

given day, the new facility has been going up fast. The roof is now on the new sawmill building and exterior cladding was being installed as the first load of logs came into the Babine yard via off-highway forestry roads. Bringing the first logs into the yard held special significance for workers and management who could take time away from the busy worksite for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the weigh scales. Loaded down, the truck, trailer and off-highway load of logs weighed in at 77,000 kilograms. It will take about another 2800 loads to fill the yard, so Babine logging contractors will be busy. Five contractors, employing approximately 60 loggers and truckers between them, are expected to be able to fill the yard before spring break-up at the end of March. To anyone driving by on the highway, the mill looks close to being finished, but management is cautious about pinning mill start-up to a specific date. The new Babine mill is expected to

Premier looks back on 2013
After a whirlwind year that started with a come-from-behind election win, Premier Christy Clark sat down with me for the traditional year-end interview in her Victoria office. Here are excerpts from that discussion. A longer version with video can be found under the Opinion tab of this newspaper’s website. TF: Premier, you surprised a few people this year. What surprised you the most about 2013? PCC: I guess it was the disconnect between the pollsters and the pundits, and the public. I did have a sense all the time that the citizens were thinking something different in the run-up to the election campaign. I wondered, am I missing something here, or are they missing something? And I guess it turned out that it wasn’t me that was missing something. TF: The liquefied natural gas export project is going to use a lot of natural gas, especially in the early years. Will B.C.’s greenhouse gas reduction targets [20 per cent reduction by 2020, 80 per cent by 2050] have to be changed? PCC: I don’t have a clear answer on that yet. We are working with the companies on exactly how we are going to structure their environmental commitments and costs, and their electricity costs versus using gas, the total royalty tax regime. We’re looking at that as one package. However that turns out, though, this opportunity to export natural gas to Asia is the single biggest opportunity we have ever had as a province to reduce greenhouse gas emissions around the world. In shipping this to China, we are going to help them wean themselves off some of the dirtiest coal anybody’s burning anywhere in the world. TF: If B.C. is going to get credit for displacing coal use in Asia, shouldn’t B.C.’s coal exports, even though it’s metallurgical coal, count in our greenhouse gas total as well? PCC: I know that the academics and pundits are going to get all mired in competing sets of numbers and studies. For me, we have a chance to do good for the world, and we’re going to take it. TF: On oil pipelines, your agreement in November with Alberta Premier Alison Redford involves B.C. supporting her effort for a national energy strategy. What do you see it doing in the future? PCC: The big idea that she’s trying to pursue with that is a strategy that will connect us east to west in energy. Energy grids are much better connected north to south than they are east to west. So she’s trying to pursue a pan-Canadian strategy for the exchange of energy, The Omineca Express is published every Wednesday in Vanderhoof by Black Press Ltd. whether that’s hydroelectricity or natural gas or whatever it is. We haven’t been intimately involved with it until recently, so we’ll see where it goes. TF: There’s a perception out there, fuelled by the opposition, that you campaigned against oil pipelines and now you’re turning the tanker around, as it were, to be in support of them. What do you
say to that? PCC: It’s typical of the other guys to reinterpret and misquote. That’s what they do. They’re in opposition. What I said was, we have five conditions that must be met in order for heavy oil to be considered to go ahead in British Columbia. That has not changed. The five conditions remain in place. As of today, none of them have been met. The only thing that
is different today, from before the election, is that now I no longer stand alone in supporting the five conditions. I have one other premier supporting me, and that’s Alison Redford. Emergency shelter volunteers bring warmth to B.C. communities The Editor Each winter, volunteers in communities throughout British Columbia activate a network of temporary emergency winter shelters to make sure that everyone has warm, safe shelter when cold weather threatens the health and safety of people who are homeless. The Province has allocated $1.5 million in funding to have these spaces available when our weather is at its worst. It is community volunteers who ensure that they are open, and that people have a warm, safe place to stay. These shelters are an invaluable service, providing more than 21,000 bed nights last winter. Over the last week, cold winter conditions throughout the province have kept these shelters open every night in a number of communities. This is an act that would not be possible without these dedicated volunteers, who open the doors, lay out mats and blankets and prepare a hot pot of coffee to chase away the cold.
Their warmth and kindness does more than provide a bed, it creates hope in a place where it can be all too easily extinguished. As the minister responsible for housing, I know there are stories like this happening each day, each hour, in communities both large and small. I am grateful for the commitment of agencies and individuals who care so deeply for their neighbours, for people who are often invisible on our streets. I am honoured to work with them in our collective efforts to end homelessness. To these volunteers, and to everyone who gives to those in need, I want to express my gratitude and my thanks. Your efforts make a difference to the lives of so many and help create better communities for all of us. Rich Coleman Minister of Natural Gas Development Minister Responsible for Housing

The Canadian Avalanche Centre was invited to present in Vanderhoof to Travis Himmelright’s Outdoor Pursuits class at NVSS but because they canceled it turned into an evening only session that none of the students were able to attend. “Here in Vanderhoof you can access three different regions as far as avalanche’s go,” said Himmelright. “You can get down to Barkerville or you can go into the North Rockies around Tumbler Ridge or you can actually head to Smithers. We’re kind of central as far as access to different terrain. It was an informative evening.” Scott Klassen, a local member of the Search and Rescue team promoted the event on social media. A few other search and rescue members attended as well as scouts, rangers and anyone with an interest in back country adventure. The two hour session involved
presentations from the Canadian Avalanche Centre where they would show everyone where they are on a mountain and then have them pick the best way to go from there to stay safe. “It was full of information and there was certainly an interest for it in the community,” said Himmelright. A few years ago the same kind of workshop only drew a handful of people, this year the workshop had 16 people attend and more might have shown up if the workshop hadn’t been rescheduled due to transportation issues. There’s a lot of different types of avalanches according to the centre and they try to educate people on where to find them. They have a website with the latest conditions on it but they can only update it once a week for some periods of the year. If there was one thing that Himmelright took away from the workshop? “Go out safe,” he said. “You can have a lot of the knowledge and have a lot of the textbook stuff but you need to actually practice using the probe and beacons and the shoveling stuff. You have a 10 minute window after an avalanche hits and if you can get the person out within that their likelihood of survival drops significantly.”

Wishing our employees, retirees, their families and our host communities a very happy holiday season. May the new year be filled with health and happiness. From our family at Rio Tinto Alcan to yours,
Arf on the Housetop Prairiedale held its annual Christmas concert last week on Thursday, December 12. Grades K through two were part of the play, Arf on the Housetop that was about several sad dogs waiting at the pound and hoping to have a good Christmas this year. There was plenty of boisterous singing where all the young actors were very excited and happy to be performing for their parents. Everyone snuck in little waves to their moms and dads. The kids howled like wolves in time to the music and in the end, every puppy found a home with a little help from Santa Claus.

A concert of firsts
NEWS
Wednesday, December 18, 2013 Omineca Express
Sam Redding Omineca Express Vanderhoof was presented something special on Saturday night. The Northern Orchestra held their annual Christmas Concert and this year it featured Jonathan Schultz, violin, performing Vivald’s Four Seasons. It was an intense, hour long performance, divided into four pieces starting with Spring. Conductor and Musical Director Gordon Lucas spoke before the performance and said that he himself has only played the entire piece six times in his life and that, in his professional opinion, less than 10 high school students in the province are capable of playing it. “There are 347 public highschools in BC. Counting private schools, over 600 high schools in this province,” said Lucas. “That would be 600 people in grade 12 who are at the top of their class as Valadictorians. Jonathan is in grade 11.” But that was the second half of the concert. The first half was dominated by the Vanderhoof orchestra students who played Christmas tunes and polka’s by Johann Strauss Junior. Gideon Lamprecht performed solo cello in Vivaldi’s Cello Concerto in A Minor. The orchestra seemed smaller than usual but that was because it was mostly just Vanderhoof students who Lucas was putting to the test. “Trial by fire,” he called it. “I have to do it or they’ll never know how.” Normally, the pillars of the orchestra are Kevin Teichroeb and Rachel Eagles on violin, with Jan Jensen on viola and Gideon Lamprecht on cello. But, for Saturday’s performance, Lucas had the students lead sections where they had no experience leading and little experience with their section. Lucas said that you might hear some mistakes, but that just means they’re slowly getting better. The next Northern Orchestra concert will be in February at the Sweethearts Ball around Valentine’s Day.

Kinette Christmas hampers
with internet abuse Sam Redding Omineca Express Teenagers in Vanderhoof were given an education in social media from a recent play by Green Thumb Theatre about cyber-bullying. The play is called Tagged and was written by Dave Devaux, NVSS played host to Tagged twice on We d n e s d a y, Dec. 11. “It’s all about taking that extra second before you press send to think about the consequences,” said Brenda Pilatzke, Stage Manager. The storyline is about two 16 year-olds who are being interrogated in two separate interview rooms by the same officer, there was no wall or anything so the students saw it all at once. There was a teenage house party the week before and a young underage girl got drunk and passed out and some photos of her in various positions showed up online with disparaging comments written on them.
The police are trying to track down who uploaded these photos so it becomes a kind of mysterythriller for teens about internet abuse and cyber-bullying. The show runs for about 45 minutes and has been playing in high schools all over BC since it opened about four weeks ago. “Green Thumb has been do-
ing this kind of work for close to 40 yearS now,” said Patrick McDonald, artistic director. “We do primarily new plays, we commission playwrights to do them for us, so we’re always looking at what subjects are of interest to our main audience.” Internet abuse has been first and foremost in the minds of teenagers across Canada for a while now. One can think of several tragic examples where individuals have been abused online

or cyber-bullied into taking their own lives. “This isn’t based on anyone’s story, it’s just based in that world,” said McDonald “It asks teenagers to think about what is appropriate behaviour. It doesn’t tell them not to use websites or social media but asks them to think about what they would say in real life compared to what they would say online.” Green Thumb theatre has made several hit productions in the past. One of their latest plays was called Cranked and it was about crystal meth addiction as well as other shows about gangs and teen violence.

We have speed to share Submitted Lorne Clarke The Nechako Lakes Speed Skating club wrapped up its annual shorttrack speed skating meet at the Vanderhoof arena with a bucketful of personal best times. The skaters, aged four to 45, turned in impressive performances at the Dec. 7 meet as they pushed each other to record times. Spectators at the exciting meet were also treated to relay races and individual pursuit races, which saw skaters lined up on opposite sides of the arena before they took off in pursuit of the other skater – and a race to each finish line. To say the action was intense and exciting would be an understatement! Clubs from Mackenize, Prince George, Fort St James and Vanderhoof competed at the Vanderhoof meet, which had 78 skaters on hand for the day’s action, plus another 15 for a lunch-hour jamboree which was set up for novice and beginner skaters. While the training and time preparing for meets can seem arduous at times, Nechako Lakes coach Nicole Ebert said it is easy to see the rewards.
“When the small kids are cheering for the older skaters, and you see the older kids return that enthusiasm, it makes all the time seem very well spent,” Ebert said. Many of the days races featured photo-finishes as the four or five-pack of skaters raced each other around the ice in many of the day’s events. The build-up to the Vanderhoof meet had many skaters compete in Fort St James at their annual shorttrack event (short track races are held in standard arenas, long-track are like those at Olympic - size ovals). The conditions and racers were in fine form there also as some skaters took more than 20 seconds off personalbest times in a 12-lap race! Matthew Ebert and Allison Desmarais, two of the Nechako Lakes senior skaters, also attended a longtrack camp in Calgary recently for a few days and were able to meet and train with members of Canada’s Olympic Oval team. Alison has also been competing at short-track events in Calgary and has qualified for the Canadian Junior Championships. Her personal best times now have her in the top 25 skaters in Canada!

Midget Bears Mackenzie Champs Nechako Notes The Vanderhoof AMS Midget Bears travelled to Mackenzie on the Dec. 7/8 weekend for a six team tournament. The Bears opened Saturday morning against Fort Nelson and came out with a 10-3 victory. In their second game of the tournament Vanderhoof faced off against Terrace and lost 7-2. With the loss the Bears were forced to play their third game of the day against the Fort St. James Stars. A tired Vanderhoof team was able to play an inspired game against a short-handed Stars team and prevailed 13-4, placing them in the Championship game slated for Sunday afternoon. In the final, Vanderhoof was out for revenge against a Terrace team which had defeated them handily the day before. What would prove to be a very exciting game didn’t exactly start out well for the local squad as Terrace skated out to a 2-0 lead after the first period. The Bears finally got on the board midway through the second with Tate Page scoring on the power play with assists from Connor Arnason and Nick Carter. Five minutes later, on another power play, Jimmy Silver fired one past the Terrace goalie with an assist going to Connor Arnason. The second period ended with the game tied 2-2. In a wild third period that saw seven goals and three lead changes the Bears got off to a great start when Nick Silver scored thirty seconds in, with assists from Braden Boucher and Jimmy Silver. Two goals forty seconds apart staked Terrace to a 4-3 lead before Nick Silver tied it on the power play, assisted by Jimmy Silver. Vanderhoof then took the lead on a fantastic individual effort from Braden Boucher, who split the Terrace defense and scored top shelf on the Terrace goalie. The lead was short-lived, however, as Terrace tied the game nine seconds later on a strange goal as the puck, shot from outside the blue line, bounced about eight feet in the air in front of Bears’ goalie Liam Arnason and flew over his shoulder into the net. With the game tied 5-5 the last few minutes were very exciting with both teams having opportunities to score. Liam Arnason was forced to make three big saves in the closing moments of the game which afforded his teammates the opportunity to at least take the game to overtime. Overtime wasn’t needed however, as after a face-off in the Terrace end with 32 seconds left in the period, Nick Silver fired a cross-ice pass to brother Eric who slammed it home for the winning goal. Kyrel Silva also earned an assist. Final score 6-5 Vanderhoof. Congratulations Bears on another successful and exciting weekend of hockey.
