LOCAL FAMILIES IN NEED
Donations are down SOS concerned it won’t reach its goal this year
With less than two weeks to go before Christmas, and with funds at less than half the amount required, the Society of Organized Services is concerned about meeting the needs of the community this year. “We have close to 1,000 households registered for our Caring for Kids at Christmas Program,” said Renate Sutherland, executive director of SOS, “and we are concerned because donations are down from what they have been in previous years.” SOS is hoping to raise $115,000 this Christmas in order to purchase grocery store gift cards for low-income families and individuals in the Oceanside area. This is up $5,000 from last year due to economic conditions and the increased demand for support, says the SOS. People have been registering for their Christmas Program since Nov. 18, and distribution of gift cards, plus toys from the SOS Toy Shop was set to begin Monday. “We give grocery store gift cards to families and individuals, so that they can purchase the kinds of foods that are meaningful to them during this season, whether it is a certain cultural food or a special once-a-year treat,” said Sutherland. “Most of us can remember eating something each year that speaks to our memories of this season. We believe that everyone deserves to enjoy those things that bring meaning to them.” “Every year, we have people who ask about sponsoring a family for Christmas. Donating to the SOS Caring for Kids at Christmas fund may not be the same as choosing the gifts and foods for a certain family, but it’s almost more personal, because the people who receive the gift cards are receiving your gift of dignity.” See AN INCREDIBLY GENEROUS, page A4

Cougar encounter close to city AUREN RUVINSKY
writer@pqbnews.com
A cougar sighting on Little Mountain near Parksville is a good reminder to be aware of the animals and report all incidents, according to conservation officer Ben York.
A Little Mountain resident told The NEWS he was out for his regular walk on Saturday morning with his mid-sized, husky-mix dogs on a leash when a full-sized cougar, larger than his dogs, appeared beside him. He shouted at it and backed away
but the cougar just followed them along until he found a big stick. The resident, who didn’t want his name used, said he just wanted to warn people since they are commonly used trails. See SOMETIMES, page A4

Christmas decorations stolen from yard
Oceanside RCMP say a resident of Arrowsmith Way in French Creek called Dec. 11 to report that all his family’s outdoor Christmas decorations had been stolen from his yard. The intricate display included a large snowman, lights and multiple, fully-lit artificial trees. Police say it would appear that the suspect(s) likely used a vehicle as there was a large quantity of items taken. “This kind of theft is really disappointing and needless,” said Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman. “Unfortunately, it takes away from the spirit of the holidays and will put people with similar displays on edge.” Police are asking if anyone has information about this crime, to contact the Oceanside RCMP, 250-248-6111. • On Dec. 2, police say home owners discovered their residence on Grafton Road in Errington had been broken into while they were at work. Police say the suspects forced their way through the front door of the residence and made away with several paint ball guns, personal items and three firearms. The firearms are described as a .22 Calibre “AR Style” Rifle, and two SKS Rifles with bayonettes. RCMP say they would like to remind the public to keep diligent with securing their property and to report suspicious persons or activities to police. Oceanside RCMP say they are also seeking the assistance of the public in solving this crime. Police say if anyone saw anything suspicious in the area on Dec. 2 or have any information, to call Cst. Monika Terragni at 250-248-6111 or Crimestoppers 1-800-222-8477. — NEWS Staff/Oceanside RCMP

Judging by the length of the line-up, the return of the Bethlehem Walk has been a major success. Families filed all around the Parksville Fellowship Baptist Church, some waiting for hours to get into the much anticipated Christmas event. “Thousands of people are coming out to enjoy it,” said coordinator Gail Barbero, who has been tirelessly organizing the dynamic event. “We’ve been working on the Bethlehem Walk since August, and it’s been non-stop.” Barbero said more than 400 volunteers affiliated with the PFBC help make the fundraiser possible, including parking patrols, actors and

The Bethlehem Walk takes guests back in time through biblical theatrical performances, a recreated village market, period costumes and live acting. The popular event is free of charge, however donations and non-perishable goods are gladly welcomed with proceeds going to the Salvation Army. In 2011 the Bethlehem Walk raised more than $12,000 and heaps of food. Tonight, Dec. 17, is your last chance to take part in the Bethlehem Walk. SALE ANNOUNCED MONDAY
One firm now owns both local Re/Max offices Larry Stewart bought Qualicum office earlier this year
Re/Max First Realty of Parksville has been sold to a company that now boasts nine offices in Western Canada, including Re/ Max Anchor Realty in Qualicum Beach. Ian Lindsay and Frank Fairley, principals of Re/Max First Realty of Parksville, announced Monday the sale of their company to Re/Max 100% Realty Associates Ltd., operating as Re/ Max of Saskatoon, effective immediately. A news release issued Monday said Re/Max First Realty is a well-known, successful, top-production real estate company. In 2007, the office was awarded the Broker Owner Office of the year for Western Canada. The release said their realtors are acknowledged leaders in the industry and have been awarded consistently for their success, and the office is “well known for both the individual realtor and its team approach to community involvement in
their ongoing support of various charitable causes within the district.” New owner Larry G. Stewart said he pleased to be able to add Re/Max First Realty to his group of Re/Max companies. With this acquisition, the news release said Stewart now owns nine Re/Max franchises with more than 200 realtors across Western Canada. Earlier this year, Stewart purchased Re/ Max Anchor Realty in Qualicum Beach. He said he sees the Parksville Qualicum Beach area as one of the most sought-after destinations in Canada in the coming years. “The Re/Max referral network is the most effective system available to assist people in finding or selling their home,” said Stewart. “With our nine offices and over 200 realtors, we will be able to expand on the success of Re/Max and its brand awareness worldwide. This additional Western Canadian network will maximize result opportunities for all of our clients whether buying or selling.” Stewart also said he looks

Parksville Shoppers Drug Mart owner Mike Biagioni got to hand over the cheque, but he stressed that it was the eager cashiers who pushed to make their Tree of Life campaign so successful. The store employees got to choose the charity and far surpassed their $4,444 goal, with customers donating $6,357 to the Parksville Qualicum Haven Home transition house. “This will go a long way,” said Renate Sutherland, executive director of the Society of Organized Services, which opened the local house in October in collaboration with the Nanaimo-based Haven Society.

“We’d been trying since the ‘80s and finally we just decided to do it and we did it,” she said of the new local facility, the opening of which means women and children don’t need to travel to Nanaimo or be put up in a hotel for temporary shelter from domestic violence. “The really cool thing is the whole house is furnished by donations,” she said. Sutherland pointed out that a third of RCMP calls are related to domestic violence and they are eager for all the donations they can get to help that situation. The Shoppers Drug Mart donation is part of a national campaign and Biagioni said his staff was very excited to be able to help the local house. He said their store raised far more than any other on the Island and was led by co-captains Vicky Andrew and Lindsay Brown. To donate, or for more information visit http://havensociety.com.

business column
Licences have important role Why do businesses require a business license to operate? Is there a purpose? Do they add any benefits to my business? Or is it just a money grab for the City? With the addition of the inter-community business licence and the ensuing discussions around business licences in general, this is a question I have been asked. The City of Parksville requires every person carrying on, maintaining, owning or operating within the City in any profession, business, trade or occupation, to hold a valid business licence. Similar statements are contained within the websites for the other municipalities in the mid-Island. Regional Districts do not require business licences. That doesn’t really answer the question: “Why do I need a business licence?” Let’s dig a little deeper. Business licences help ensure that the City’s land use regulations, under the zoning bylaw, are complied with. The licence process also ensures that building, fire and health requirements are met as well as provincial regulations such as liquor control and licensing, motor dealer licensing and film classification where applicable. Business licences are important for

zoning compliance which means only certain types of businesses can operate in certain areas of the city. Also, depending on the type of business, there may be building, fire and health requirements to comply with. I know that if I am going to eat in a restaurant, I definitely want them to comply with health requirements. Okay, so business licences are required so that a city can monitor to ensure businesses are in compliance with zoning bylaws, fire and health requirements and building regulations. That makes sense and I think that answers the general question of, “Why?” Obtaining and displaying a business licence shows your customer that you are in compliance with all of the rules and regulations attached to your busi-
ness sector. It is similar to displaying your Chamber membership decal, it provides legitimacy to your business for the customer who doesn’t yet know you. I have said it before — 63 per cent of consumers will favour a chamber member because they believe they are a reputable business. I believe that reputation is earned, which leads to repeat business, but for that first-time customer looking for signs of legitimacy, a chamber sticker and a business license are a good start. Now that you know you need to look into getting a business licence, here is some general information for you. Business licences are generally valid for one year and the fees do range depending on the type of business you have. Most municipalities offer a pro rated fee if you start your business mid-year. And if you operate as a mobile business, the mid-Island will have a mobile business licence by the end of the year so you only need one business licence and an inter-community licence to work from Duncan to Campbell River and out to Port Alberni. An hour a day of fitness can be fun, especially when coupled with other healthy choices like eating right. That’s the goal of the 60 Minute Kids’ Club, a fun and engaging online program designed to help get elementary school-aged children active. The 60 Minute Kids’ Club is now looking to expand its community reach by partnering with Black Press. “Our strong commitment to healthy communities is well-served in our partnership with the 60 Minute Kids’ Club,” said Randy Blair, president of Black Press’ Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island divisions. “The ben-
efits of active families are so numerous, it will deliver increasingly great news”. “We want to make (children’s health) even more of a community effort,” said Gillian Thody, Western Canada manager of the 60 Minute Kids’ Club. It all starts with healthy choices including physical literacy (playing for at least 60 minutes each day), eating healthy (including five or more vegetables and fruits daily and eliminating sugar and sweetened drinks), and cutting back on computer and TV time (two hours or less). Two 60-day challenges and one 45-day challenge are held throughout the school year, skipping over busy
times and holidays. The first challenge of the year from Oct. 1 to Dec. 1 just wrapped up, with the second challenge beginning Jan. 15. Schools across Canada participate. Schools can sign up at www.60minkidsclub.org. Student log in and track their own progress, receiving points for each log in, which aggregate under their school. This enables organizers to determine the most active kids, grades, schools, districts, regions and provinces across Canada. The 60-Minute Kid’s Club originated in 2009 with just five schools. Last year, 70 participated. For more info visit: www.60minkidsclub.org.

NDP v. Senate
T
he B.C. NDP is doing its Official Opposition job well with this issue. Earlier this month, the New Democrats of this province announced they will introduce a motion in the legislature to support the abolition of the Senate. “The recent Senate scandals serve to underline that the Senate needs to be abolished,” said soon-tobe-replaced leader Adrian Dix. “B.C. is under-represented, with one senator for every 764,000 British Columbians, while other jurisdictions get a senator for less than 37,000 people.” What’s more, Dix says Premier Christy Clark has “repeatedly” changed positions on the Senate “based on her political needs.” In typical NDP fashion, they just throw that accusation out there about the premier’s political needs without actually listing examples or backing it up, but we digress because we find ourselves in agreement with the NDP on this one. As stated in the NDP news release, a motion to abolish the Senate was passed unanimously in Saskatchewan with the support of both the governing Saskatchewan Party and the Opposition New Democrats. On the same day, Saskatchewan repealed legislation that allowed for elected nominees to the Senate. If both sides of the house in Saskatchewan can unite over this, why can’t the same happen in Victoria? We are at a loss to come up with what value the Senate brings to Canadians, aside from providing fodder for journalists in Central Canada who get tired writing about Rob Ford. The Senate is not representative. It is not democratic. If it was designed to give sober second thought to bills from the House of Commons, that has evaporated as the chamber became a place to reward loyal party soldiers, thereby making it a body that votes on political lines just like the House. The NDP is doing some good Official Opposition work by putting the feet of the premier and the B.C. Liberals to the fire on this issue. We believe the majority of B.C. residents, that same group of people who returned the B.C. Liberals to power in May, would like to see the premier take a stand on the Senate and call for its abolition. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters Community mail boxes not seCure In late 1994, while living in North Saanich, we were offered the “security and convenience” of a community mail box. At that time, we opted for continued delivery to our own mailbox. On Dec. 28 of that year, Canada Post informed us that home delivery was no longer an option and we were required to collect our mail from a community box. This has been our fate (both in North Saanich and for the past nine years at Qualicum Bay) since Jan. 1995. The result is that we are well versed in the lack of security and inconvenience afforded us by the use of community mail boxes. The box that is presently assigned to us is located some distance from our home in a secluded, unlit area. The boxes themselves are made of light-weight aluminum and the locks seem quite flimsy. Our bank of boxes has been broken into three times to our knowledge; although we were extremely fortunate that our personal box was never breached. Lest you think that Canada Post assumes any responsibility for such break-ins, think again. Once the mail is in your compartment, it is your property and any theft, identity fraud, or other consequence is your responsibility. Canada Post might send you written confirmation that a breach has occurred and suggest that you notify anyone who might have sent you items which contain sensitive personal information, but other than that letter, they are done. Canada Post is clearly in trouble — and is not doing anything positive to win back

The kind waiter then approached our table and said that someone had recognized our faces and wanted to give an $80 donation to the non-profit organization. We were very touched and wanted to say a big thankyou to the kind person who made this donation. God bless and Merry Christmas. anDrea Petrie Qualicum Beach
harper in league with big oil
Much of the world was shocked to learn that President Barack Obama’s administration was caught spying on German Chancellor Angela Merkel. But now we find that Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government has been caught spying on Brazil. Harper has only one vision for Canada and that’s exporting a junk crude called bitumen — by pipeline and supertankers — to emerging economies and that’s why we are spying on the Brazilians and, I believe, pass-
ing on the information to Big Oil. When the International Energy Agency and the HSBC Bank and Deutsche Bank all agree that 80 per cent of the world’s oil and coal reserves must stay underground to avoid catastrophic climate destabilization, every citizen from all walks of life has a moral obligation to say no to these crazy pipeline projects. Considering the power of Big Oil in Canadian political life, there seems to be no limit to what the Harper government will do to help their friends in the oil patch. They’ve muzzled scientists, gutted environmental laws, reneged on international climate commitments, labeled environmental critics as criminals and traitors, and have now been caught engaging in economic espionage. Will he stop at nothing? Not Quite. After the pipelines, oil spills, coal ports, train derailments that immolate entire neighbourhoods, he will join with B.C. Premier Christie Clark to promote toxic fracking of LNG and the puzzling, shrinking world of LNG exports. To date, Harper has centralized power in the PMO’s office; debased the role of Parliament; defunded environmental science; trashed most of the country’s significant environmental legislation and, I believe, lied extravagantly about the Senate scandal. He’s attacked environmentalists and First Nations and plans on targeting unions next. I just hope that the good people of Vancouver Island have the courage to serve as Canada’s conscience in this important battle.

letters satisfied with the oceanside health centre service I have had several occasions to use the services provided by the staff of the Oceanside Medical Centre, and I am writing this note to applaud. When one enters the front doors, there are two very pleasant ladies who initially directed me, and then subsequently merely (and I use this word advisedly) greeted me as I entered the main hall. On my first and second visits, I was directed to the LifeLab and to the X-ray facility, and was looked after in short order. More recently, I have had a series of appointments with staff in ambulatory care. I try to arrive a few minutes early and use the electronic check-in. One “swipes” one’s B.C. Medical card, the screen tells you it’s working, and then tells you that you are checked in. So there is no waiting in a queue, and one can then relax in the waiting area until called by a nurse. I have found that my appointments are remarkably on time, and that the nursing staff are pleasant and highly skilled. Now of course if an emergency case comes in, then those of us who are not emergencies will have to wait a bit. If you need to go to the centre, don’t be put off by the apparently full parking lot. Each time I have gone, it looked full on first glance, but I have always found a spot easily, and when I have walked in, the building seems surprisingly empty. To me it seems to be busy, but not hectic. I presume there are offices and treatment centres both upstairs and on the ground floor, and that this may account for the lack of crowding and line-ups. At certain times of the day (e.g. the evening rush hour), leaving the parking lot and trying to make a left turn onto the Alberni Highway towards downtown Parksville may be difficult. This has happened to me two or three times, but it is not a major inconvenience. In all, I am very satisfied with the treatments I have received, and as I said at the outset, I applaud and congratulate the staff for their competencies. To my mind, there is no need to travel to Nanaimo or Victoria for initial treatments, but of course the centre is not equipped with all the high-tech scanners, etc. available in larger hospitals. It is my understanding that we and our neighbours are using the services offered more and more, and therefore more nursing help would be very welcome. A. JAmes KAyll Qualicum Beach

Here in Qualicum Beach, people do have an appreciation for the natural world and the importance of its preservation. This past summer we celebrated the fifth anniversary of the signing of a protective conservation covenant between the town, the Brown Property Preservation Society (BPPS) and the Land Conservancy of B.C. (TLC). For newcomers to the area, you may not be aware that these lands were originally proposed for sale as a residential development. This 50-acre forest was previously called the Brown Property and is now the Heritage Forest. The BPPS was formed in 1996 when it was learned of the Brown family’s plans to sell the land. The society raised over two-thirds of the money through their tireless community fundraising efforts to save this forest and have it preserved as it is today. The town generously contributed the remaining funds for purchase in 2004. Collectively, concerned citizens had a vision for those lands and made it a reality. Remnant pockets of huge, 400-year-old Douglas fir trees still stand along the banks of Beach Creek today. The oldest and largest tree in the forest is about 800 years old. The balance of the forest has regrown from logging in the 1870s and 1920s. Barred owls, great horned owls and pileated woodpeckers are old growth key indicator wildlife species which can commonly be seen and heard along with other assorted species such as bald eagles and ravens. Interpretive signage borders the easy-to-walk mulch trails that meander about and take in the natural features. We are most fortunate to have these biologically rich lands, surrounded by residential neighbourhoods, preserved right here within the town boundary of Qualicum Beach. It serves to remind us of what the magnificent Coastal Douglas fir forest ecosystems were once like. Very little of this forest type has been preserved in Coastal B.C. Yet locally, we have this unique green space for present and future generations to enjoy. This is your forest and is to be used for the appreciation and enjoyment of nature, in perpetuity. Because of you this forest still stands. If you haven’t done so lately, go walk the trails. Park at the main gate along East Crescent Road near the Crown Mansion. QBMS students Serena De Waal and Jeremy Fensom get into character during one of their last rehearsals before A Christmas Carol debuted.
Brimming with glee, Qualicum Beach Middle School students were preparing for their final production of Charles Dickens’ unforgettable story, A Christmas Carol. “We’re all really excited,” said smiling student and experienced actor, 13-year-old Serena De Waal. The 30-person production has been in the works for nearly two months. Drama teacher and director Kim Bellwood admits it has been a lot of hard work organizing lighting, sound and costume but she says “it’s all worth it.” The cast and crew have been self sufficient, she added, praising the energy and effort of the students who have put tireless hours into weekly rehearsals. A Christmas Carol is the first play QBMS has produced in years and the actors say they are more than happy to bring theatre back to their school. Newer to the stage, Jeremy Fensom, 13, said he was nervous to take the stage as Mr. Cratchit but his enthusiasm was unmistakable. The final show is tonight, Dec. 17, at QBMS. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults, and include dessert.

SATURDAY AT MORNINGSTAR FARM
Families can enjoy Christmas on the Farm The four-legged stars from Bethlehem Walk are there LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com
Escape the hectic malls and head to the calm of the Morningstar Farm this Saturday, where there’ll be carolling wagon rides, live music, treats and more. It’s the annual Christmas on the Farm event, a customer appreciation day from the family at the farm in French Creek, which is also the home of Little Qualicum Cheeseworks and the Mooberry Winery. “It’s a nice, quiet thing to do for people looking for something relaxing and meaningful,” said Judy Haynes at the farm. People can visit with the stars from the Bethlehem Walk (the four-legged variety) and behold a live manger scene. There are cows, calves, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, bunnies and Carl the llama. The farm’s famous raclette cheese will be on the grill and there will popcorn, marshmallows for roasting, cookies, hot mullings and of course fruit wine for tasting. People can park at the Morningstar Golf Course next door and enjoy a complimentary wagon ride to the farm and back, and there will be a couple different live music performances to add to the Christmas spirit. The event takes place from 11 to 3 p.m. Dec. 21. The farm is located at 403 Lowry’s Road. For directions and more information, visit the website www.cheeseworks.ca.

REVIEW OF ECHO PLAYERS’ PRESENTATION OF CINDERELLA
Unusual twists and clever jokes to go with sappiness
REVIEW BY LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com
Any play that can keep my three-yearolds fleeting attention for two hours deserves to be commended. We laughed, we booed, we clapped, we hissed and we rolled our eyes in uni-
son at the silly costumes and jokes. Yes, Cinderella, the classic British pantomime, was a hit with all the children at the Village Theatre on Thursday evening, but the adult humour also garnered plenty of hoots and fits of laughter from the older members of the audience.
Cinderella, a musical comedy, is presented by Echo Players in Qualicum Beach and runs until December 29. The happy fairytale, which is not the Disney version, had its familiar moments of sappiness, but it also had many unusual twists and clever jokes which
included many local and some political references. The costumes were fabulous. Especially that of the blindingly-sparkly Good Fairy, which actor Chris Cope very successfully made hilarious. See FREED, page A23

Freed made Cinderella both naive and cheeky
continued from page a14
Local dancer Bethany Freed did a fantastic job of making Cinderella both sweetly naive and cheeky, and Gary Alfred did a bang-up job of creating a thick and ignorant Prince Charming, while also making him very likeable. The actor, who recently starred in Spamalot in Nanaimo, brought great humour to his role. It was nice to see such a young cast at the performance, often a tough task for local directors. From a man who was born at a home during a violent Pacific storm comes a riveting recollection of memories that will amuse you! Follow the Child of the Storm and witness his adventures as he takes you through the turbulent war years to the mid 1960s. Lawrence was a child growing up and living in poverty on the wild coast of Western Canada. In this book, you will experience the freedom associated with his unusual lifestyle.
The story takes place at a time in history when the economy of the Great Depression had shifted to a new prosperity. Old ways of harvesting timber and commercial fishing for a meagre living were becoming more modern and economically viable. Meet the interesting characters who shared life with the author during these changing times. Go to sea with the crews of various vessels as they sail the oceans and lakes of North America from the boiling tropics to the frozen seas of Alaska.
Share in the tragedies of lost ship mates and the excitement of discovering new ports of call as Lawrence travels through the stormy Pacific, Atlantic and islands of the Caribbean. This is his story, the journey and adventures of the Child of the Storm.

SATURDAY AT THE MAC
Stories, songs for kids First show nearly sold out so second show added Dec. 21 LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com
The McMillan Arts Centre is not just for adults and two shows this Saturday will prove the point. Holiday Stories and Songs for Children will feature experienced storyteller Marva Blackmore, who runs the series Stories for the Telling at the centre, and musician Dave Klinger. “I wanted to put this on to show that the MAC is for all ages, to work with Marva in a storytelling and musical event and to have some fun with children,” said Klinger, a former elementary school teacher.
Klinger will play the piano and sing at the event. The stories Blackmore will tell are about the magic of giving gifts, whether they be gifts to family, people less fortunate, special gifts or funny gifts. Since tickets for the first event at 1 p.m. on Dec. 21 nearly sold out, organizers decided to add another show at 3 p.m. that day. The show runs for an hour and costs $5 per child, while adults accompanying them are free. Tickets can be purchased at the McMillan Arts centre (the MAC) which is open Tuesday through Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The MAC is located at 133 McMillan Street in Parksville. For more information visit www.mcmillanartscentre.com or call 250-248-8185.

Winter Awareness
Don’t Be A Statistic… Drive Smart! Please Take The Time To read This valuable informaTion abouT highway driving and how you’re affecTed by winTer condiTions…
Every year the first major snowfall of the year catches the driving public by surprise, even though we all know it’s coming sooner or later. The impact is even more severe when it hits during the day at high traffic times. It seems to take a scare or even an accident for drivers to realize that you have to adjust your own driving habits, you have to be aware of others on the road who may or may not be totally tuned in to winter driving. Emcon Services, the R.C.M.P., Highway Patrol, Ministry of Transportation, I.C.B.C, BC Trucking Association and many others work closely throughout the year to make our highways safer. Be a part of the solution, not the problem… drive smart!
24 Hour Highway Maintenance… We’re ready for Mother Nature!
The Management and crews at Emcon Services Inc, have the equipment and sanding stockpiles ready, as well as a 24-hour maintenance plan in place. Money has been invested in sodium chloride producing equipment and staff have been trained to best utilize it to keep our highways cleared, anti iced, sanded and as safe as possible. We need your help… snow plowing, sanding, salting and crews cant be everywhere at once, even though we’d like to be. Be patient, we’ll get there. Crew's work long and hard, 24-hours a day-don’t frustrate them by trying to pass
them when it’s not safe. Plowing priorities are based on the traffic volumes of the roads. High volume roads such as the Inland Island Hwy, Highway 19A and commuter roads, receive priority. Secondary roads such as bus routes and connector roads are next. Subdivisions, Cul-de-sacs and dead end road are lowest priority.
SPEED KILLS! Slow down when highway conditions dictate.
Posted limits are meant for normal driving conditions. Sensible consideration has to be given to snow accumulation, visibility and black ice warnings when you’re driving on the highway. Many accidents and deaths can be avoided if drivers use common sense and slow their speed down to suit the winter driving conditions… be safe, drive smart!
Snow tires, Chains or All-Season?
The motor Vehicles Act requires that all vehicles “use winter tires or carry chains” Winter tires can be identified only by this logo, All season tires do not have the same traction or stopping abilities as true winter tires. If you insist on using All –season tires, be prepared By carrying a set of properly fitted cable chains for your vehicles and practice putting them on before you need them!
Sport Utility Vehicles & 4x4s Still Have To Stop Like Everyone Else
Sport utilities and 4x4s are great vehicles and you do have much better traction when accelerating. The warning is simple; don’t be lulled into a false sense of security. Road conditions and visibility may make it necessary to Stop quickly… SUV’s and 4x4s cant stop any faster than a regular two wheel Drive vehicle on snowy and icy roads. Be safe, drive smart!
Island Division Cumberland 250-336-8897
Oliver Watson
Operations Manager Emcon Services Inc Shift gears into winter driving mode! That means slow down and maintain a safe stopping distance. Expect turning, stopping and accelerating to all be affected by wet and slippery conditions. Accelerate, brake slowly and avoid sharp movement of the steering wheel in order to maintain control of your vehicle. When it’s raining, do not use your cruise control as in the event you hydroplane, your car could accelerate and cause you to loose control. Our crews are putting salt and sand on the roads to improve the road during winter conditions. When you follow us, slow down and maintain a safe distance behind us. When meeting us, move toward the fog line in your lane to give us room to plow and apply materials. Never try to drive through the snow coming off of the snowplow. Park your vehicle off of the road to allow us to safely plow your road out. Check for current conditions at www.drivebc.ca. or call the automated phone service at 1 800 550-HWYS. Enjoy your winter driving season.
Sgt. Joe Schofield
Unit Commander, Central Vancouver Island Traffic Services (CVITS) Provincial law now requires drivers to slow down and move over when they approach a stopped emergency vehicle with it lights flashing. Drivers are to slow to 70 km/h on highways where the speed limit is 80 km/h or higher, and to 40 km/h when the limit is below 80 km/h. If there is another lane going in the same direction, drivers must also move into that lane, away from the emergency vehicle, if it is safe to do so. Drivers who fail to comply will face a $173 fine and three penalty points. For further information call 250-954-2953.
Johnathan Tillie
Area Operations Manager Ministry of Transportationt Winter weather conditions certainly can add to the stress of driving during this time of year. A few guidelines for safe winter driving includes: - Winterizing your vehicle. - Driving with headlights on. - When driving on snow or ice, allow plenty of room to start and stop. - Maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and others. - Allowing additional time to arrive at your destination - Keeping some emergency items in your car at all times - Remembering that all conditions can change quickly For more information on winter safe driving visit out website at www.th.gov.bc.ca, then click on “driver-travel information” or for the latest reported road conditions click on road reports”

LOCAL BUSINESS PROFILE
Errington lifestyle lures experienced mechanic After two decades at a dealership, Chris Herr started his own business CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com
Chris Herr surprised himself by starting a business in Errington — and he did not anticipate falling in love with the area. “I never thought in a million years I’d end up here,” said Herr, owner of the brand new Errington Automotive. “And now I’m thinking about moving to Errington with my family.” Herr has spent his entire working life in the auto industry. For the past two decades, he worked at the local GM dealership as an electrical specialist mechanic. However, he said the decision to open his own shop came out of left field. “I was helping a friend move into the house next door (to what is now Errington Automotive),” he explains. “I noticed the building was empty, which surprised me because I didn’t even know Bull Dog’s had shut down.” Turns out, Bull Dog Auto Recycling, the business formerly in Herr’s new lot, closed and the space had been empty for nearly a year. Herr contacted the landlord and within two weeks a deal and life-changing decision was made. “I figured if I didn’t start something of my own now I’d spend the rest of my life wondering, ‘what if?’” And just like that, Errington Automotive was born. With help from Herr’s three kids and wife, the group cleaned up the residue of the old wrecking yard and built a family-owned and operated auto shop. One can hardly see evidence of the past. Errington Automotive has warm green walls lined with Herr’s various awards and achievements in the auto industry, miniature model cars carefully placed along a handmade shelving unit, comfortable leather couches, a surf board coffee table and smells like fresh ground coffee — always. And despite the chaos of the last few months — cleaning up an old junk yard, learning the ropes of small business

ownership while still raising three kids — Herr said he absolutely loves having a shop to call his own. “I can really take pride in my work now,” he said. “And I love being able to talk to my clients, to meet the owners of vehicles and show them exactly what’s wrong with their car and what I did to fix it.” But Herr’s favorite part of Errington Auto is Errington itself — “the people here are amazing.” Just as we launch into a conversation about the unique lifestyle of small communities and “neighborly support,” a local guides her horse past the shop window, likely en route to the Errington
craft fair, and we share a laugh. “I love this kind of thing,” said Herr, adding that he grew up in a similar type of environment in Peterborough, Ontario that was “small, quiet, full of farm animals, community feel and it was pitch black at night.” Herr said he is getting back to his roots. “Of course it’s difficult opening your own business, but I think it’s worth it,” he said. “And the community of Errington has been hugely supportive. People stop in just to welcome me to the community and check the place out.” During our interview, a woman stops by.
“Hi. I’m your neighbor, literally, I live right next door,” she said. “I know,” replied Herr. “I see you drive past every day.” The woman laughs and says she wants to support local business. She inquires about getting some work done for her son’s car. Herr listens intently before explaining in laymen’s terms what the client’s options are. The woman is receptive and grateful and books an appointment. “This place is all about neighbors supporting neighbors,” said Herr. Errington Automotive is located at 1586 McKibben Road. Drop by, or contact Chris Herr at 250-586-6066.

In Loving Memory of
JOSEPH ZILKOWSKY March 17, 1918 – December 9, 2013
Joe was born on the NE quarter, Section 16, Township 36, near Carmel, Saskatchewan and passed away at Stanford Place in Parksville, BC. Raised in Saskatchewan, Dad left the farm in 1942, after being conscripted into the army. He married our mother, Betty Fortowsky, while he was AWOL. The settled in Coquitlam, BC, where they raised their six children: Terry (Fay), Al (Herbie), Carol (Bill), Pattie (Brandt), Debbie (Claude), and Donna (Ed). Dad worked for 36 years at what was then known as Fraser Mills in Coquitlam and became an electrician there while also operating his own business doing residential wiring. Always a hard worker and a responsible husband and father, he could make and repair almost anything. His hobbies were playing guitar, playing cards with friends and family, studying genealogy, and, of course, talking. As his eyes and ears went, his love of talking increased and many enjoyed his interesting stories of life on the farm. A grandfather to 11 and a great-grandfather to 13, he will be missed by many. His name will be carried on by his great-grandson, Ben Zilkowsky. Joe is survived by his brother, Art, and his sisters, Cecile and Frances. Dad was a founding member of All Saints Parish in Coquitlam, where his service will be held. We would like to thank all the staff who cared for Dad during his last years. We love you, Dad. Prayers and Viewing – Wednesday, December 18 at 6:00 pm. Mass and Luncheon – Thursday, December 19 at 10:00 am, All Saints Parish, 821 Fairfax Ave, Coquitlam Interment – Thursday, December 19 at 1:00 pm Valley View Memorial Gardens, 14644 - 72nd Ave, Surrey Flowers gratefully declined. Betty June May A remarkable life, well lived. Thoughts of you weave in and out of every day. Remembered today and always. December 16, 2011. With love, your family and friends. I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by; And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking, And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking, I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Iis a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. KSS 54, BSS 45 in local basketball Ballenas and Kwalikum high schools go head-to-head in rivalry game; Kondors now 3-0 T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
The Ballenas Whalers came in to Kwalikum Secondary looking for a big road win but came up empty on Thursday night as the Kwalikum Kondors beat the Whalers 54–45. The Whalers were looking to bounce back from a bad loss to Alberni District Secondary School (ADSS) earlier in the week while the Kondors were looking good at 2–0 in league play. Both teams were hoping to take home bragging rights in the rivalry game. Fans from both schools came out to show their support as it was a close game up until the third quarter and that’s when the Kondors pulled away for good. Evan Stefanek led the way for the Kondors with 16 points. Ryan Becker and Jesse Goring, both in Grade 11, pitched in with 11 points each. Leading the charge for the Whalers on this night were Tomos Roberts with nine points, Ian Whibley and Scott Childs each with seven points. The lead changed hands multiple times in the first quarter and was a trend that continued in the second quarter as well. Numerous turnovers by both teams

allowed each of them to stay close and remained that way until it neared the end of the second, which saw the Kondors, led by Stefanek and Goring with six points each in the second quarter, build a bit of a lead heading into the half.
“We had a lot of turnovers and guys weren’t following their assignments on the floor. It was a little frustrating but luckily for us both sides were turning it over frequently to each other,” head coach Butch Gayton had to say of his
Kondors at the half. With the score 30–25 in favor of KSS at the start of the third quarter, the Kondors kicked it into gear and managed to create some turnovers with a relentless defence as they went on a nine point run. The Kondors held the Whalers scoreless for the first half of the third quarter and carried a 13-point lead heading into the fourth. Ballenas was sparked by Ian Whibley in the fourth frame, as he tallied five points to try to bring his team back within striking distance, but the lead proved to be too much for the Whalers as KSS maintained their cushion after that stellar third quarter and ended up closing it out 54–45. “The boys are putting in a huge amount of effort working on the fundamentals at practice, but it is hard to win games when your turnover count is higher than your free-throw percentage,” Ballenas head coach Chris Wright said. The Kondors are at home today against ADSS. Ballenas is coming off two tough losses last week and will look to get back on the right track coming out of the Christmas break.

Generals lose much-anticipated Bucs rematch T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
The Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals were looking forward to getting back on the ice and going at it one more time with the Nanaimo Buccaneers after a heated game in Parksville last weekend. It didn’t work out that well for the Gens, who lost 4-2 in Nanaimo on Thursday. Eric Kennelly of the Bucs was suspended for two games after he delivered an elbow to the head of Generals forward Cory Burnett in Parksville on Dec. 7. Apparently anticipating trouble, the league assigned two referees (usually only one official has the red arm bands) for the game Thursday night, however both teams managed to keep it clean. Nanaimo scored two goals in the first

period, just three minutes apart. A late goal from Jonah Pearson, a 16-year-old
from Nanaimo, with five minutes to go in the first, brought the Generals back to
within one heading into the second. The Buccaneers put two more on the board to take a 4–1 lead heading into the third period. Oceanside opened up the period with a chance to convert on the power play but couldn’t manage a goal. A few minutes after the power play had expired, Wyatt Petryshen, 18 yearsold and hailing from Calgary, slotted his fourth goal of the season. But it was too much for the Generals to overcome as they ended up losing 4–2. Saturday the Gens were back at home to square off against the Campbell River Storm. Oceanside came out strong in the first period.

Final home game unsuccessful The Generals converted on their second power play opportunity as Devin Warfield banged one home off a shot from the point from Chandler Bruyckere for his first goal as a General. Goaltender Evgeuni Makarski stopped all 10 shots he faced in the first, but his night was far from over. The second period was all Campbell River, showing why they’re the team to beat in the North Division. The Storm struck quickly on two goals that were just a minute apart, the first at even strength and the second on the power play. Both goals came off bounces from the end boards and popped on to the waiting stick of a Storm player. “I thought the first one I had a good position on, the second one was a worse bounce for sure. Sometimes it’s just the way it goes, they get a couple of bounces and the next thing you know we’re down,” said Makarski of the two tough goals. Oceanside managed to tie it up halfway through the third period as captain Travis Flug busted a scoring slump as he put one home on the power play. It was one of seven power plays the Generals had on the night, which was minimal compared to the 14 Campbell River had on the night. “Yeah, it’s a little tough when we’re playing short handed that often. Especially when you get behind, it makes

it hard to come back. We just need to figure out a way to play with more discipline and not put ourselves in a hole like that,” Flug said. The Gens had chances in the third period on breakaways for Flug, Mikey Markland and Nate Fitzpatrick but neither Flug or Markland could beat the Storm goalkeeper, while Fitzpatrick
put it past the goalie but rung it off the crossbar. This marked the final home game of the 2013 calendar year for the Generals as they’re headed to Campbell River on Friday and will be in Comox on Saturday night.
