Stuff stockings with sensational surprises This season's top picks for tiny treasures and trinkets galore

W

hile it's fun to give the big, exciting presents at Christmas, sometimes the smaller gifts can be just as much fun – both to shop for and to give. Stocking stuffers are always a hit, no matter how young or old the recipient is, and there's plenty of great ideas on the Peninsula for unique and entertaining trinkets. Deals World on Johnston Road should definitely be on your list, with hundreds of affordable stocking-stuffer ideas. Goody brushes, combs and accessories in a variety of sizes and colours make a good choice for men, women and kids on your stocking list. Pop-up books, sticker books and colouring books are great for the younger crowd – and will keep them entertained while you get Christmas dinner ready. Christmas-themed wind-up toys are also a good option. For the older recipients, Deals has a huge selection of beautiful candles and candle holders – holiday-themed and otherwise. A variety of unique coffee mugs, chocolate and other goodies round out just a few of the ideas available at this Peninsula 'treasure trove.' Over at Home Again, Home Again in Semiahmoo Shopping Centre, owner Darlene Spooner said she's started to notice a trend when it comes to shopping for little trinkets like stocking stuffers. "People are really wanting things that are practical," she said. With that in mind, Darlene recommends holiday themed coasters – adorned with poinsettias, ice-skaters, stockings, etc., polar bear-shaped saltand-pepper shakers and unique cocktail napkins. For someone with a sweet tooth, the home decor and gift store has a wide selection of hot chocolate mixes, nicely packaged with funny sayings on them, including one that reads, "I never met a chocolate I didn't like." These scrumptious drink mixes come in white chocolate, sugarless and apple cider varieties, and Home Again also carries special milkshake mixes and martini mixes, perfect for holiday hosting. Colour-changing tea lights, acrylic Snoopy-dog ornaments and special holiday cocktail picks are other suggestions for your loved-

ones' stockings this year. If it's a craft enthusiast you're shopping for, look no further than Laura's Fashion Fabrics on Johnston Road. While this onestop shop is known for its amazing selection of fabrics and top-quality sewing machines, they also have a huge selection of notions, including scissors, rulers, rotary cutters, buttons, threads for sewing, serging, quilting, embroidery and embellishing, ribbons, trim, laces, rhinestones, cording, elastics and bindings. Laura's also carries an assortment of patterns from McCalls, Vogue, Butterick and Kwik Sew. For the tea-lover on your list, you'll want to check out Angelic Teapot on Marine Drive, home to a unique selection of premium teas, brewing accessories and gift ideas.

When it comes to stocking stuffers, owner Maureen Coroliuc recommends the Tea Room chocolates – award-winning organic chocolate bars that are infused with tea. "These are great for the tea and chocolate lovers on your shopping list," Maureen said. The chocolates come in a variety of flavours, including raspberry rooibos, green earl grey, mate and cacao and mayan pepper. Another tea-themed idea is the Tea Roadie, a double-walled insulated travel tea press for looseleaf tea that keeps tea hot and doesn't drip. Over in Ocean Park, Romancing the Home has a wonderful selection of jewelry, decor items, bath and body products and fun gift ideas that are sure to impress

anyone on your list this year. An exquisite bath-care line by Barefoot Venus – made in Kelowna – includes delectable Ruby Red products, inspired by the original 'forbidden fruit,' – grapefruit. The store also carries Basic Spirit pewter keychains, in various ocean-themed designs. These keychains are made from leadfree pewter and are handcrafted in Pugwash, N.S., and 10 per cent of proceeds from the sale of each keychain goes to the Save Our Seas Foundation. Other unique and charming stocking stuffer ideas at Romancing the Home include humorous cocktail napkins by Inviting Company, decorative silver coffee scoops and beautiful embroidered sachets filled with lavender, made in France.

Wrap up some kitchen inspiration this year Gadgets and gizmos aplenty for the culinary connoisseur on your list

I

s there a cooking enthusiast or budding chef extraordinaire on your Christmas shopping list this year? If so, there are plenty of unique, innovative and down-right cool gift options for that special someone who spends extra time in the kitchen. Kitchen Therapy at Grandview Corners is a great place to visit to find the latest and greatest in kitchen gadgets big and small. One hot new item is the Lekue Citrus Spray, a device that turns your fresh citrus fruit into a sprayer to flavour your drinks, cocktails, seasoned salads, seafood and other recipes. This nifty gadget comes in two sizes for optimum extraction – longer for larger fruits like oranges and grapefruits and shorter for smaller fruits like limes and tangerines. Simply cut off a small piece of the end of the fruit, screw the pointed threaded end into it, gently squeeze the fruit to fill the sprayer's filter and press the sprayer head to release a mist of juice. It also comes with a handy storage dish for in between uses and is dishwasher-safe. Another popular item is the Rice Cube, a handy device that allows you to make perfect sushi cubes in just seconds, with or without

seaweed. Making the popular Japanese dish is so easy with this gadget, even kids can take part. And you're not limited to just using rice – you can also use polenta, potato, falafel and much more.

If the person you're shopping for – or the person who will reap the benefits of the foodrelated gifts – loves chips, but perhaps doesn't love the added fat and calories that come along with the salty snack, you'll want to check out the Mastrad Topchip, also available at Kitchen Therapy. Using the specially designed slicer, you can cut up potato – or any other veggie or fruit for that matter – season them with whatever spices you like and place them on the tray to be cooked in the microwave for three to five minutes. The result – perfectly crunchy and fat-free chips. And not to be forgotten on the kitchen-gadget list are salad lovers – a hugely popular device at Kitchen Therapy this year is called the Salad Zinger. This salad-dressing infuser has a separate compartment on the bottom with stainless-steel blades that allow you to chop up whatever herbs, veggies or fruit you want to flavour your salad, which are then infused to the top compartment, which contains your oil, vinegar, honey, mustard, soy, yogurt, or whatever other liquid you want to use. The Salad Zinger is your ticket to healthy, delicious and affordable salad dressings right at your fingertips.

Peace Arch News LAST MINUTE GIFT GUIDE, Thursday, December 12, 2013

Top tech toys always a popular choice I f you have an electronics buff on your shopping list this holiday season, it can be tricky to know what the latest and greatest gadgets and gizmos are for the holiday season. With technology changing faster than the seasons, something that was innovative and state-of-the-art last Christmas might already be considered obsolete and out-of-date this holiday season. Luckily, the experts at Ayreborn Audio Video Inc. can help steer you in the right direction if you’re hoping to surprise someone on your list with the latest tech toy. A top pick for any music lover, according to owner Bryan Ayres, is the Sonos Play1 wireless HiFi speaker system. This system can unite your digital music collection from any mobile device over a wireless network, and is available in a special gift pack at Ayreborn for the holiday season. The package includes two custom-designed drivers with dedicated amplifiers and a free Bridge, which allows the music players to go anywhere and work wirelessly on any network. This system is easy to use and can be controlled from anywhere with a smartphone, tablet or PC/Mac – plus, it’s on sale in-store at Ayreborn for only $219. New to Ayreborn for this holiday season are the Spirit Classic headphones by Focal.

Contributed photos

There are a number of great electronic gift ideas at Ayreborn Audio, including (left to right) the Minx Go Wireless Bluetooth speaker, Spirit Classic headphones by Focal and the Sonos Play1 HiFi speaker system.

A warm sound combined with the dynamics of the transducers will enable you to find the pleasure of listening to all of your music. Key features include circum-aural closed design, high-dynamic, faithful music reproduction, light cone (86 mg, versus a market average of 110 mg), which gives faster acceleration for more dynamic signal response as well as optimal comfort and sound insulation. An additional gift option for the music lover on your list is the Minx Go Bluetooth speaker. Using the latest in Bluetooth technology, Minx Go instantly streams music from your phone, tablet or computer. It’s compact size – 9.3 inches wide by 4.8 inches tall, and only 2.4 inches deep – makes this a convenient

speaker system to take along with you, but it still packs enough power to fill your room with deep, crisp and immersive quality. The Minx Go includes an auxiliary output (3.5 mm), high-quality class-D amplifier, USB charging port, digital signal processing and can run off main or battery power. It’s also available in gloss black and white finishes, for just $149 in store. Ayreborn has numerous other gift ideas in store as well, at a range of price points, including Samsung Galaxy tablets, universal remote controls, flat screen TVs in all sizes and turntables. Stop by their 3033 King George Blvd. store to find out more.

The ultimate gift – two tickets to paradise

T

he official start to winter may yet be several days away, but Mother Nature has made it perfectly clear over the past few weeks that fall is a thing of the past. So if you're really stuck on what to get someone for a Christmas gift that can't be beat, how about a trip to somewhere warm and sunny, where you can relax on the beach and leave all your cares – and the cold weather – behind you? According to Elaine Ross of Uniglobe Travelex, Mexico still dominates as a spring destination. "This is mainly because of the great prices for all-inclusive vacations," Ross explained. "But Mexico is followed closely by Cuba and Hawaii." A new hot spot for travellers, according to Ross, is Antigua West Indies, which has seen a surge in bookings for next spring. Over at White Rock Travel, Ginny Harrison has noticed that slightly more exotic locations are starting to become more popular, as well. "Hot this year is South America,"

Contributed photo

Picture yourself soaking up the sun on a white-sand beach – the dream could be a reality if you give the gift of travel.

Harrison said. "We have lots of people looking at the Galapagos, Peru, the Amazon – even Antarctica." Harrison also pointed out that the new year is a popular time for travellers to book their European vacations. "The major tour companies all have early booking deadlines out right now," she said. "So to save some money, people may want to start their planning a bit earlier." If you're in the habit of booking

way in advance, White Rock Travel is offering four exclusive group tours over the next 18 months to amazing destinations around the globe. "We're exploring the Cinque Terre in Italy, and Botswana in March 2015," Harrison said. "An African safari – can you imagine a more spectacular gift?" The agency is also planning a Uniworld River Cruise in June 2015, as well as a trip to incredible India, back for a third

time by popular demand. If you're planning on gifting a trip to someone this year, Harrison reminds people that a passport is needed in order to book, to ensure the name and additional info are all correct. Both Harrison and Ross agree that gift certificates are probably the best way to go, as they can be bought in any denomination and redeemed at a later date, with input from all those planning to take part in the exotic excursion.

low-light conditions. Other recommended gifts for runners include the Garmin 10 GPS running watch, which tracks distance, speed and pace, and travel rollers, for rolling the kinks and knots out of sore muscles.

Peninsula Runners also carries a wide selection of hats, running gloves and merino wool socks to keep you dry and warm while you're braving the elements for a walk, jog or run. Waterproof jackets, merino wool thermal wear, down clothing and waterproof hiking boots are all great gift ideas for those who don't stick to the indoors over the cold and rainy months. The gear and apparel store also carries snow shoes – fast becoming a popular hobby on the local North Shore Mountains – as well as snow boots for kids and adults alike and backpacking gear. Another great place for a wide selection of sports equipment, apparel and accessories is the locally owned South Point Canadian Tire. Topping their Christmas wish-list for sports enthusiast of all ages

are basketball hoops and balls, hockey skates, sticks, pucks, balls and protective gear and golf clubs and accessories. Gear for racket sports such as badminton, tennis and squash, can also be found at great prices, along with other accessories. If it's a golf lover on your list, why not give them the gift of a better golf game? At GolfTEC, located at Grandview Corners, professional, experienced golf instructors offer tips and training for golfers of all experience levels. Just in time for Christmas, they're offering gift-certificate packages on special through until Dec. 31. Packages include a $99 Swing Evaluation, a 60-minute session including video analysis, motion measurement and improvement plan; and $199 Holiday Improvement package, which includes a swing evaluation, one lesson and one practice session with video. Tips for those who prefer the real deal

hristmas trees strung with coloured lights and covered in ornaments and other trinkets are staples of the holiday season. Finding the perfect tree and decorating it is as much a Christmas tradition as egg nog and bad gifts from distant aunts and uncles. There is much debate over what tree is better – artificial or real – but the fact of the matter remains that an artificial tree will not provide the aroma or experience a real tree can offer. There are plenty of places around the Semiahmoo Peninsula to get both real and artifical trees. And while the real deal comes with the benefits of memory-invoking scents and an ambience that can't be matched, they also come with a lot more responsibility than their artificial counterparts. Here are some tips for keeping your real tree in tip top condition throughout the festive season. • Invest in a really good stand. Not only will it last you for many years to come, but it will ensure you aren’t cheating on the water level and that you’re carefullydecorated tree won’t tip over and destroy all of your hard work. Yikes! • Give your tree a fresh cut – about an inch to two off of the trunk to promote good water absorption. A cut tree can absorb as much as one gallon of water 24 hours after it is cut. After that the general rule is that a tree needs approximately one quart of water per inch of trunk diameter. Adding special mixes to the water will not help it last any longer. • Invest in a high-quality tree like the Noble Fir (the Cadillac of Christmas trees) for a tree that lasts longer and retains its needles the best, even when they start to dry out. • Examine the tree you like carefully. A good one will look healthy, be vibrant green and have a strong pine aroma. Look for a tree with strong branches to hold ornaments. The needles should be soft and flexible. They should not fall off

Keep your real Christmas tree in good shape throughout the holiday season with these simple tips.

easily if you run your hand over boughs of the tree. • Get flocked. Many of the local nurseries offer custom flocking – a process made from cellulose, a derivative of wood, water, spray adhesive and in many cases a fire retardant – to make your tree look as though it were sitting out during a snowfall. On average, the process costs somewhere between $7- $8 a foot. • Be sure to shake the tree out before you transport it home. This will loosen any dead branches and needles, which will make a mess of your car and home. Most tree lots and farms will wrap the tree in netting so that it stays condensed and portable for the trip home. By following these tips you can ensure you have a beautiful and healthy tree to enjoy for the duration of the season. And when the New Year comes around and it's time to dispose of your tree, be on the lookout for local charitable chip-ins taking place around the community.

A gift that can be enjoyed for years to come

hether you are blessed with artistic talent or just enjoy the ambience that an amazing new piece of artwork brings into a home, the gift of art is one that can be treasured for years to come. Not only is it something that can be enjoyed by many and passed down through the generations, but the recipient will always be reminded of who gave them such a wonderful, thoughtful gift. Before shopping for artwork or art supplies, it's important to take into consideration's one taste – are they into the avant-garde or the more traditional? Would they enjoy beautiful scenic photography, or perhaps a handmade ceramic sculpture? If it's an artist on your list – whether a newbie or veteran – a

The shop is fully stocked with any and every kind of art supplies one could need – a range of paints, brushes, canvas, paper, pens, pencils and more. The Gallery also provides framing services – what better gift than to have a budding artist's work professionally framed? Other gift ideas include beautiful, handmade leather journals, handmade metal sculptures, refillable ink pens and more. For the inexperienced artist, the store even has the perfect place to start – paint by numbers. Plus, if you're not entirely sure what would be best to give the artist on your list, gift certificates are also available.

Stress-free guide to hosting over holidays

W

hether you're preparing for a casual family gathering, a fancy four-course dinner party or a high-spirited hoe down for 100, planning a party – particularly during the holiday season – is a big job. After all, the meal has to be memorable, the house must be spotless, and you've got to be stressed...or do you? Not necessarily, and with some careful planning, preparation and time-management, hosting a holiday party to remember can be a breeze. First on the party-planning to-do list is to decide what type of event you want to host. For a smaller, more intimate affair with fewer guests, a sit-down dinner might be a good option. However, if you plan on welcoming a larger crowd, a buffet or cocktail-and-appetizer party is a better way to go. If you're concerned that your home might be too small for the amount of people you'd like to invite, consider an open house-style event, where guests are welcome to come and go at various times throughout the afternoon or evening. When it comes to planning the food – whether it be an evening of hors-d'oeuvres, a buffet or a multicourse plated meal – the most import thing is to ensure you have enough food for all your guests, plus a little extra, just in case. Always round up your estimates, instead of down, and try to

anticipate what some of the most popular food items will be, so you can plan accordingly. Next, you'll need to set the scene. While some hosts like to go all out in the decorating department, others prefer a more low-key approach. Either way, make an effort to create a pleasing ambience that appeals to the senses. Perhaps an assortment of candles or a pot of simmering water flavored with cinnamon, cloves and allspice to fill your house with a heartwarming aroma. If you want to get really creative for your guests, you can plan a do-it-yourself champagne bar, with a few different variations of bubbly, plus some cut up fruit and fruit puree. Small jewels that you can attach to a champagne flute or wine glass are a fun way to help your guests distinguish their glass from other partygoers'. Lastly, make sure you try to do most of the labour-intensive prep work well ahead of time – especially things like baking, party favours and decorating. Leave the easier preparation tasks for the morning or day of the party, and try not to plan any menu item that's going to require you sweating over a hot stove while your friends and family enjoy each other's company. The holiday season is more about spending quality time with loved ones than it is about impressing one another with your culinary skills, so be sure to take time to enjoy the party yourself.

The cast of Rumpelstiltskin, the latest pantomime by White Rock Players Club.

Fill your winter break with family memories

W

hen all the gifts are opened, stockings emptied and bellies filled with yummy food, there are still several days before many of us on the Semiahmoo Peninsula have to get back to reality, whether it be work or school. This is a time of year that kids can get a bit restless, and parents begin counting down the days until it's time to send the little ones back to school. Luckily, there is plenty of affordable fun in our community to keep local families busy and happy over the winter break. A holiday tradition on the Peninsula for close to 60 years, the White Rock Players Club returns with its annual Christmas Pantomime at the Coast Capital Playhouse. This year, the club presents a James Bond-ified version of classic fairy tale Rumpelstiltskin, written by Dave Baron and directed by Susanne de Pencier. Principal boy 'Bond, Jimmy Bond' (Kirstin Stewart), must battle nefarious master criminal Squire Goldringer (Ray Van Ieperen) and

rescue his lady love Penny Money (MacKenzie Claus), with the help of Dame 'M' (Bryce Mills) in a show that promises "live 3-D" and a guarantee, for fans of obligatory panto-animal Shenanigans, that "no giraffes were harmed during production." Also playing lead roles in this panto spoof of an equally venerable franchise are Hunter Golden (Fools) as the titular Rumpelstiltskin, Krystle Hadlow as Belladonna, Jennifer Tiles as Rocky Raccoon and Elyse Raible as Jack Russell. Steering the show is director de Pencier, with valuable contributions by costume designer Heather Maximea, set designer Andrea Olund, property mistress Naomi Mitchell, producer Matthew Davenport and stage manager Gordon Mantle. Shows run until Dec. 28, Wednesday to Saturday at 8 p.m., with 2:30 p.m. matinees Dec. 15 and 22. Tickets ($20, $15 children 12 and under) are available through the box office (604-536-7535) or visit www. whiterockplayers.ca
