Typhoon Haiyan is said to be the strongest windstorm to ever make landfall. Imagine you had to face days of uncertainty, knowing that your family had been in the path of such a storm. That was what early November was for Midway resident Elnora Faminoff. She said the typhoon struck on Nov. 7 our time. She spent days on the computer searching for people who might have news from her family. But it wasn’t until after 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12 that she got a phone call from a newscaster who had visited her family’s village of Cambulao Alangalang, Leyte and could give her the good news that, while their houses were flattened, her family was safe and uninjured. “For days I was waiting and waiting trying to get ahold of them,” she recalled. “I was a mess. At my work I

Plates were heaping full at the fundraising dinner for victims of Typhoon Haiyan on Saturday night.

couldn’t concentrate. I was worried sick.” The Midway Community Hall was full on Saturday night as a fundraising dinner was held to benefit her family’s community. There were a number of Filipino items on the menu including a noodle dish known as pancit and adobo chicken—a marinade dish that according to Wikipedia is sometimes considered as the unofficial national dish of the Philippines. The dinner was organized by Thinh Atkinson and Anna Danyluk, both 17-year-old BCSS seniors. The Girl Guides helped serve. Many members of the Filipino commu-

nity from Osoyoos to Grand Forks came out to prepare the meal. Tickets were $10 each and all 150 were sold. Just over $1,000 was brought in through bake sales and donations. Thinh said they were moved to organize the dinner on behalf of Elnora Faminoff ’s family, who literally lost everything. “Their house was destroyed, all their animals were gone,” Thinh said in an interview. “Fortunately they were not hurt.” Anna and Thinh wanted to say thank you to the Filipino ladies and everyone who donated money and came out. “To see everyone coming from

different communities for one cause —that’s good,” said Thinh. The money will go to help rebuild the community where Elnora’s family lives. All 300 residents were left without shelter when their 160 homes were destroyed. Special thanks go to the following that helped make the dinner a success: Elnora Faminoff, Nora Manning, Susan Auger, Betty and Cliff Thorton, Emma Nelson, Stan Nelson, Cora Kulh, Jmart Gonzaga, Vanessa Thorton, Amy Zeman, Thao Atkinson, Kim Faminoff, Jada Goodson, Joy Riley, Mark Danyluk, Elaine Fromme, Sue Fielding and Chris Danyluk.

District reviews facilities Check out our MIDWAY g n i t n u H COUNCIL REPORT r o o d t u O and Supplies Midway Councillor Marguerite Rotvold reported to council at their Dec. 2 meeting that the West Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital District has completed the facilities review that was mandated by the province. Theirs was the first hospital district in B.C. to file a report. The Facilities Condition Index (FCI) assigns a number that reflects the relative condition of a facility and its systems (electrical, mechanical, plumbing, etc) at a specific point in time. Included in the report were data on 10 residential facilities, four acute care hospitals and 13 other facilities such as wellness centres, health centres, storage and generator buildings. Several buildings are over 50 years old including three of the four hospitals, nine of the 13 ‘other’ facilities and three of the residential facilities. Scoring lowest in the Boundary was the facilities used by Boundary Mental Health and Addiction Services. The only facilities scoring lower in the report were the Maintenance Annex and Storage Building at the Slocan Community Health Centre. Rotvold said this report will guide future decisions on finance and capital planning. Other factors besides the FCI are taken into account when planning such as: Is the facility providing the right service? Is the facility able to accommodate current volume and future growth? Is it adaptable to current standards? Is the

facility able to meet clinical and program needs? *** Council was told by Administrator Penny Feist that the physiotherapist is requiring an additional half-day per week in order to serve all of their clients. *** Jaylene Bosovich has been hired as the temporary/casual ice arena attendant for the 2013-2014 season. *** Carbon Neutral Kootenays representative Patricia Dehnel had stopped by Midway

last month to present the village with a plaque for achieving carbon neutrality for 2012. “The Village of Midway had demonstrated significant climate leadership by working to reduce corporate emissions and achieving carbon neutrality through the purchase of offsets from the Darkwoods Conservation project. Council had considered establishing a reserve fund instead of investing in Darkwoods but according to Mayor Randy Kappes there was not enough time this year. *** The village has set their hours of operation for the village office during the coming month: they will be closed on Dec. 25-27 and Jan. 1.

Bird count needs volunteers Boundary resident Fred Marshall has put out a call for volunteers to assist in the Greenwood area Christmas bird count. “We need some willing bird enthusiasts to help in our local Christmas bird count,” he said in an email to the Times. He explained that the “Greater Greenwood Area” extends from Eholt west to Boundary Falls and up the side roads; Boundary Creek, Lind

Creek, McCarron Creek etc. “You don’t have to been an expert in bird identification,” Marshall says reassuringly; “an avid interest in wildlife is all that’s necessary. And, once one starts counting you get to know the birds much better.” Anyone who would be willing to participate please contact Fred Marshall at 250-445-6496 for count protocol and area.

Newsreel to the rescue

If you are like many families, you have a box in storage with some old family movies that you can’t watch. The projector died or was lost years before. What you need is Newsreel Productions, owned and operated by Oliver Gläser. “My main service nowadays is transferring people’s old home movies and archiving old Super 8 and 16 mm film to High Definition (HD),” said Oliver. The business was the first of its kind in Western Canada with equipment that Gläser built from scratch. It is now the only professional quality small gauge transfer company in Western Canada. “I get everything from grandparents with their old films of their kids growing up, to movie companies who want me to do title sequences for their films or music videos, commercials or that sort of stuff,” said Oliver, who added that he has had clients from as far away as Brazil, Germany, Holland all over the U.S. and Canada. Oliver is a cinematographer by trade —aka a Director of Photography. He explains that when he used to live in Vancouver his job was designing the lighting and operating the camera on movies; the guy who sits next to the director and makes the calls on lighting and where the camera moves. “But the hours were long and it is not really conducive to family life so we moved out here.” He had been doing the film transfer business while in Vancouver and he continues to provide that service from the Boundary. He scans each and every frame of film and transfers each frame to a distinct frame of video. “Most of my clients have their film transferred to hard drive so they can edit it on their computer but for some people a DVD or a Blue-ray disc is all they want so they can pop it in their machine and watch it.” He is set up to handle any 8 mm, Super 8, 16 mm or Super 16 negative or reversal film; and job size is no limitation. Oliver said that a film shot in 1927

Oliver Gläser

was the earliest film he’s transferred—all the way up to modern stuff that people have shot only a week before transfer. Often some of the film is missing, cracked, broken, cupped, dried out or it might have a vinegary smell, which is a sign the film is breaking down. “When you think about it some of those films are 75 years old. When you edit it and clean it and check the splices and fix it you end up getting a film that looks like it could have been shot yesterday.” His website (newsreelproductions. com) has some great examples of some of the films that he has transferred, including shots of logging equipment in the 40’s and kids playing stickball in Toronto streets in the 1930’s and 40’s. Oliver insists that there is something about film that is more visceral than shooting with video. “If you have ever been forced to sit through somebodies holiday slideshow or if you have ever shot a video of a vacation and you sit back and you try and watch it—it is generally everything has been recorded and it’s slow and it’s boring and you don’t really remember why you shot it. Whereas film is a very different experience because film was so time limited. You only had three moments a roll so you would only press the trigger on those moments

that most stand out.” “I have heard it compared to memory —you don’t remember everything but you remember the highlights and film is like the highlight reel of things.” Oliver still shoots film. “That’s why I built the machine to begin with - to transfer the film that I was shooting myself.” He studied film in North Vancouver at Capilano College—now Capilano University—but states that he learned his trade as a professional cinematographer, for the most part, not in school but through work. The Newsreel Productions webpage landed Oliver a job in Italy last summer. His webpage logo is a Bell and Howell Filmo 70 DA—a 1930’s era 16 mm camera. Oliver happens to own one and was hired to return to the beaches of Sicily to recreate some shots that were originally filmed with the same time of equipment during the Allied landing in 1943. This is one of the many stories told on his website. “There is really no higher quality transfer than this and when you get into HD for Super 8 there is really not much more you can get. You see every pixel, you see every grain of film with this resolution.”

For the record

Last week’s article about the Aboriginal murals being designed for BCSS and GFSS neglected to give credit to several teachers who were instrumental in the projects. The Fine Arts teachers involved—Mrs. Sarah Tripp at BCSS and Jan deHaan at GFSS. Both classes are working with artist Terry Jackson. Aboriginal Education teachers Marilyn Hanson and Wanda Hecht applied for and received the grant for the schools.

Think before deciding on e-book Are you considering buying an e-reader for someone for Christmas? Or putting one on your own wish list? There used to be only one choice, and that was the Amazon Kindle, but today there are many more options available. And if you want to use the library’s collection of e-books, there are some considerations you should know before you buy. To quote Gillian Shaw from the May 23 issue of the Vancouver Sun: “Canadian libraries have e-books available for download and as someone who has probably paid enough library fines to buy at least one e-reader, I think this counts as my favourite technological advance at the local library. With an e-book, you’re never late returning a borrowed book—it disappears automatically from your bookshelf.

GREENWOOD LIBRARY

REPORT

“Kobo and Sony e-readers work with library e-books in Canada while most Kindle models don’t support the open standard (EPUB) format used by libraries. However, the Kindle Fire is the exception; you can use it to borrow books from Canadian libraries.” We have a few patrons who are using our library e-book collection now but expect to see more in the New Year; drop in and we will do our best to help you get started with your new e-reader. We are excited that the Grade 4/5 students in Greenwood and Rock Creek will be joined by the Grade 4/5 students at Big

White this season for the Reading Link Challenge program. The children will be reading six different books over the winter/ spring and then we’ll hold two levels of challenge to test them on their knowledge of those books. And we (the Greenwood and Midway public libraries) have decided to hold a special alumni challenge for the Grade 6/7 students of Greenwood and Rock Creek, since they have “graduated” from the program but enjoyed it so much they still want to participate—isn’t that great?! The Greenwood Library will be closed from Dec.24 through Jan. 2 for the holidays, reopening on Friday, Jan. 3. Be sure to stock up before then on reading and viewing material. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of our patrons!

Never be such another Stephen Lewis issued the following statement upon the death of Nelson Mandela: “We are writing to you this evening to share our profound sadness at the loss of Nelson Mandela. He was the personification of decency, love, and courage. “His lifelong commitment to social justice for all was a beacon to the world. We invite you to join with others and share your thoughts and tributes to Madiba (as he was lovingly known) at www.stephenlewisfoundation.org.
“May the depth of our sadness resound with a renewed clarion call to our world leaders, our communities and our own individual determination to make the world a more decent, equitable and better place.
“Nelson Mandela was everything the world has said of him. “Madiba, as he’s affectionately called, was profound, humble, kind, calm, generous, strategic, funny, brimming with honesty and integrity, occasionally impish and with a heart that seemed as though it could encompass the world. “And encompass the world, it did. It’s always said that after 27 years in prison he turned the other cheek: in truth, he emerged from the fires of hell with nothing but wisdom and love, for his people and for the planet. “There will never be such another.” *** “During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” – Conclusion of Mandela’s Rivonia Trial speech, 20 April 1964

Law requires winter tires or chains Grand Forks Gazette Reporter

Winter is here, and you should now have winter tires on your vehicle. In fact, if you are driving on highways with winter travel signs you must have winter tires or carry chains from Oct. 1 to April 30. On the RCMP’s winter driving tips webpage (Get a Grip…with Winter Tires) they ask: Do I really need winter tires? The answer is a resounding yes. Here’s why: Rubber tends to harden in cold weather thus reducing friction and stopping capability of the vehicle. The new generation winter tires maintain their elasticity and gripping power at lower temperatures (-35 C and below), whereas all season tires tend to stiffen and lose gripping power around 0 C. A study showed that winter tires reduce stopping distances by up to 25 per cent or between two to three car lengths. That could be the difference between a safe stop and a fender bender or worse. Kate Trotter, public affairs officer for the Ministry of Transportation and InfrastrucRock Creek ture, urges motorists to “know before they go” and Boundary by checking DriveBC Fair Association for info about highway conditions and weather. Other tips from the RCMP site: • Get your vehicle ready for winter in Fall • Don’t drive under Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014 the influence at 7:00 pm • Pack an emergenRock Creek Fair Pavilion cy kit • Learn and practice Registration and payment of membership winter driving techfees will be accepted from 6:00 to 6:45 pm. niques before you need Everyone Welcome them

• Plan your trip and tell your friends and family. Check road and weather conditions • Avoid using overdrive and cruise control on slippery roads • Travel with a fully charged cell phone for emergency situations • SLOW DOWN and WEAR your seatbelt Now here’s three things not do when winter driving, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure: 1. Don’t get too close to sanding/salting trucks If you find yourself behind a plow, keep a safe distance behind it—200 feet at the least. Visibility near the plow will be greatly reduced because of blowing snow, and if you’re following too close, you’ll fall into the plow driver’s blind spot. Also, keep in mind that the plow may be spreading winter abrasive (small rocks) on the road. Travelling too close could

increase the danger of damaging your windshield. 2. Never pass a winter maintenance vehicle of the right Plows generally are travelling relatively slowly and it might be tempting to try and pass them. But these vehicles often have attachments, like wind plows, which can reach 10-12 feet to the right, so if you have to pass a winter maintenance vehicle, wait until it’s safe and pass on the left. 3. Don’t expect ice to melt as soon as it’s sanded.

Winter 2013

It gives me great pleasure as mayor to extend to all Greenwood residents on behalf of council and city staff a very Merry Christmas to you and all your loved ones. May you have a very safe and healthy Christmas filled with love and smiles; also, this is a time of year when we would like to thank the many volunteers of the various organizations in our city that make it such a wonderful place to live. When you meet one of them on the street be sure to thank them and wish them Merry Christmas and give them your best smile. They are indeed a credit to our very existence. As many of you know we are working on many projects within the city. The water main replacement has been completed and the new #5 well replacement will be finished soon as the electrical kiosk gets hooked up. Many thanks goes out to our public works crew and especially PW Superintendent Randy Smith who has worked tirelessly at these two projects. I am sure you have all heard me promote the new GEDC committee that is being worked on in partnership with the Board of Trade, Community Futures Boundary, Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Greenwood city council. We are very excited about this new venture and are looking forward to the work ahead. There are great plans talked about to improve the cityscape and enhance what tourist and residents alike will see when they drive into Greenwood—things that will make them want to stop, get out of their cars and walk around the city to enjoy what our locals already see as the gem of the Boundary, Greenwood. We hope they will then visit all the wonderful business owners and support their unique stores and gift shops. Restoring civic pride and an eye-catching clean and green city will be the focus in the New Year if we plan to increase and grow our economy so we all prosper. “Merry Christmas” and “Happy New Year” to everyone. – Nipper Kettle your Mayor

TUESDAY, February 11, 2014 Monday, February 24, 2014

FROM THE DESK OF THE

SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC WORKS To assist the Public Works crew with snow removal, please keep boulevards clear of vehicles and debris. Allow at least 10 meters between yourself & snow plowing equipment and be aware that the equipment may make sudden changes of direction. Very few municipalities remove windrows of snow at the entrance of driveways. The City of Greenwood Public Works Crew will open up driveways if time and availability of equipment permits. Please do not dump paints, petroleum based oils, medications or unwanted chemicals into the sewer system. Very small amounts of these chemicals can disrupt the wastewater treatment process resulting in increased cost, odours and labour. The chemicals and medications eventually end up in the ground water affecting its quality as well. Happy Holidays from the Public Works Crew! Randy Smith, Public Works Superintendent

Dinner a way to say thanks to volunteers A potluck Christmas dinner was combined with a celebration of those who give time to the Greenwood Museum and the Community Association on Sunday evening at McArthur Centre. Councillor Colleen Lang, who also sits as a director with the Community Association, thanked all of the volunteers that keep the hall and the Friday night bingo going—from the shoppers who keep supplies in stock to the bingo callers, floorwalkers and kitchen staff. Lang expressed the feelings of many in attendance when she said they really felt the loss of Marj Maclean, who had served both groups for many years. Doreen MacLean, director of the museum, thanked the volunteers at the museum and Info Centre. Many do the day-to-day chores: the visitor counselors, groundskeepers, brochure racking, secretary and treasurer. She also thanked several other members for their contributions to the museum such as attending a workshop, sitting on the economic development committee, conducting the meetings or helping secure a new photocopier. Following a great dinner, gifts were exchanged and carols were sung.

Dorothy and Alfred Schembri, Irene Terada, Nancy Yamamura and Yosh Uyeyama all enjoyed the annual volunteer appreciation dinner in Greenwood last Sunday evening.

Ladies meet for Christmas celebration The 29th annual Ladies Christmas Celebration was held last week on Wednesday, Dec. 4, the first year the event was held at the Rock Creek Fairgrounds Pavilion. The celebration began in 1984 when Lee-ette Millar and Brenda Schmaltz organized the first luncheon in the Kettle River Chapel. They later moved it to the Midway Community Hall, but the number of women attending had outgrown the building. There were reminders at every table set-

ting that a 30th anniversary cookbook is to be developed over the coming year to help them celebrate in 2014. Those wishing to contribute to the book are asked to contact Leda Fair at 250-4492639 or via email at teddybearranch@ gmail.com. Each year a local woman is invited to speak. This year Rock Creek resident Lisa Siewert was asked to share. Siewert, along with six local youth, is currently planning

a trip to learn from and serve at Hope for Home Ministries—a home for children with special needs in San Antonio Aguas Calientese, Guatamala—during the spring school break. The Ladies Christmas Celebration collects donations and takes a collection for the Lion’s Christmas Hamper Program as well. Women representing churches from throughout the West Boundary carry out

planning and organization. They meet and divide up responsibility for preparation of the lunch—all donated except for the meat, which is purchased jointly by all congregations. The event is then advertised in the community. The Ladies Christmas Celebration, known to many local women as the true beginning of the Christmas season in the Boundary, takes place each year on the first Wednesday of December.

(Right) The Greenwood Board of Trade had two trees to decorate this year in the McArthur Centre parking lot. The display has now grown to take in the area between the two trees. The annual tree light-up happened last Friday night with the mercury in the thermometer really, really low.

Warmth, friendship at ladies soiree ANN REXIN Submitted

A wonderful evening of goodwill and cheer was on tap as Kettle River Woodcraft hosted a Ladies Christmas Soiree Thursday evening, Nov. 21, from 5:30 to about 9:30. The atmosphere of warmth and friendship was spiced with laughter as the ladies tried on Sarah Zier’s Vintage hats (they fell in love with them and even bought them); modelled some of the consignment clothing, tried to make arty cards with Jen MacFarlen’s Stampin’ Up, and tried to navigate through very crowded rooms. Over 100 ladies attended, some with children, some with mothers and friends, all sampling the beautiful array of snacks and beverages. The scents from Sarah Geen’s Scentsy, evergreen boughs and locally made soaps permeated the air. Women oohed and ahhed at Rebecca’s

beautifully painted animal rocks, Klara’s crocheted angels and horses, Sara’s creative birdhouses, tasted Melanie’s delicious borscht, and admired works of many local artisans, all displayed amongst the warm patina of the Woodcraft furniture.

There were many generous door prizes given out to happy recipients. Thank you to the owners and staff of Kettle River Woodcraft—we look forward to next year’s soiree, it definitely got us in a Christmas mood!

Vigil marks day of remembrance

A noon-hour vigil commemorating the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada was held at the Grand Forks City Hall cenotaph last Friday. The national day was established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, and marks the anni-

versary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at l’École Polytechnique de Montreal. Teresa Taylor, program manager for the Boundary Women’s Resource Centre, spoke to those assembled on the cold sidewalk. “What made this event different than other acts of violence com-

mitted upon the general public is what it holds in common with bride-burning in India, sex-selective infanticide in China, and our women lost along B.C.’s highway of tears—the targeted intent of these killings rests upon the commonality of gender,” Taylor said. “Misogyny is a reality that

has not yet been eliminated. We, as feminists, are not stuck in an outmoded philosophy of the ’60s. And feminism is not an exhausted way of thinking that is simply eliminated through a lens of egalitarianism. We must act to eliminate the oppression [that] continues to exist for the female gender, and recognize that women’s lives continue to A vigil to honour the 14 women killed at l’École Polytechnique de Montreal on Dec. 6, 1989 by a man because they were studying what he believed was a male profession.
