Family traditions add to the season By Jennifer Blyth While we share many similarities in our holiday observances, it’s often the unique family traditions we cherish most. As part of their Christmas traditions, Victoria artists Linny D. Vine and Jeffrey Boron take time to Linny D. Vine & Jeffrey Boron celebrate the season’s miracles with a “Christmas Day Miracle Walk.” “While the festive meal cooks we enjoy a walk where we look for Christmas miracles and often discover them in nature, like the year that we wandered along the waterfront at Saxe Point Park just as a pod of resident orcas swam by,” says Linny D. Vine. For Lori Elder, Manager, Communications and Community Relations for Volunteer Victoria, the spirit of giving is one she and husband Dave share with their two sons, Anthony and Graham. “Our family has a number of special holiday traditions, but our most heartwarming involves creating a hamper for a family in need and supporting children through Santas Anonymous,” Lori says. “For the past 20 years we have made it our holiday tradition to help three children through Santas Anonymous. Each year, the boys have chosen a bear representing a child their same age, to purchase a gift for. Before they each had jobs, this gift was in lieu of one of the gifts they would have received from us. Now we still all go together, but they use their own money to purchase the gift. “It is a wonderful way to share the spirit of the season and bring joy to a child and family less fortunate.” For Esquimalt Mayor Barbara Desjardins, a local light tour is much anticipated each year. “My family’s favourite tradition is to go out at darkness on Christmas Eve and drive the community to see the lights,” Mayor Desjardins says. “Esquimalt has some amazing light displays along the Gorge Waterway, Rockheights and Saxe Point – no need to go far.” Once home, it’s time to enjoy oysters Barbara Desjardins Rockefeller and the opening of one gift. Christopher Geater, Community Relations Victoria Cool Aid Society, looks forward to a unique musical interlude at his family’s holiday gathering. “After our holiday feast is over each person is given a little, exotic musical instrument, and no one can leave the table until they have played a carol all the way through. No one ever picks The Twelve Days of Christmas!”

Sharing the Christmas story By Jennifer Blyth

Guiding a cast and crew of more than 100 is no easy task. Add to that a newborn baby and live manger animals, not to mention the challenges of an outdoor production in the depths of December, and the annual live, outdoor Nativity Pageant presented by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints seems downright monumental for all involved. But for participants, giving such a gift to the community is so rewarding, says producer Lyanne Sanderson, who with her husband, Graham, has been involved in the production for many years. Each year the Live Outdoor Nativity Pageant is presented at Topaz Park from Dec. 21 to 23, with cast and crew offering four shows per evening at 6:30, 7, 7:30, and 8 p.m. The pageant was founded close to three decades ago by Connie Hudson, a nursing student. While Hudson moved away several years later, the pageant continued and for many – both participants and audience members – sharing the special story of that very first Christmas is a cherished part of their holiday tradition. The production brings together several congregations with friends and supporters from the community. “It’s a whole church community and friends who are putting this on,” Lyanne says. “Anybody and everybody can relate to the story.” The Sandersons had seen a similar production in Ottawa and when they moved to Victoria with their two children, wanted to make the pageant part of their family’s Christmas celebrations, Lyanne recalls. “As a family we just started particiapating in the pageant and it just took off from there. Celebrating Seniors Helping Hands help local seniors By Jennifer Blyth The smiling faces of the volunteers packing Christmas baskets at Amica at Somerset House tell the story: this is an event they look forward to all year. At each of the Amica residences in Victoria and across the country, senior volunteers pack the baskets each holiday season for other seniors in their community who are in need. For some, notes Lynn Larsen, Somerset House community relations, it will be the only gift they receive this Christmas, and is so very much appreciated. It all started in 2001 when about 20 Amica staff decided to help seniors in need in Mississauga, On. That year staff joined together to raise funds for 40 holiday baskets, a number that jumped to 100 the next year and an amazing 1,300 baskets by 2010, thanks to fundraising of close to $100,000. And the growth of Amica’s Helping Hands Holiday Basket Campaign continues, due both to the initiative of residents and staff and the need in the community, says Larsen, noting that the numbers of baskets filled has grown at each of the local Amica residences, including Somerset House, Douglas House and

Beechwood Village in Sidney. A registered charity, Amica Helping Hands Community Program aims to deliver a better quality of life for seniors who are lessfortunate or marginalized. Typically, a senior supported through the charity lives on less than $25,000 annually and may be forced to choose between life’s basic necessities. To fund the program, Amica staff, residents, their families and corporate partners raise money throughout the year. Residents share both their enthusiasm and generous support, enjoying the opportunity to give back and share the joy of the holiday season. “They love putting the baskets together,” Larsen says of the residents, who often contribute themselves through their fundraisers. “They know that every dollar raised goes to Volunteers from those in need.” Amica at Somerset Into the baskets volunteers put food House will prepare and treats, along with a gift card to a 70 baskets for local local grocery store that will allow seniors seniors in need this to pick up the things they would like holiday season. most, or that they most need. “In some cases it’s the only gift they’ll receive,” Larsen says.

Enjoy a fire-safe holiday

Stockings hung by the chimney with care...a warm candle flame flickering in the window...a tree trimmed with magical lights and cherished decorations. These holiday scenes have long been part of our seasonal celebrations, yet they also bring to mind a few important safety concerns. While it’s easy to get caught up in the magic, Oak Bay firefighters remind homeowners to remember a few fire safety basics.

The Tree Before buying a tree, test its freshness: 1. Branch Test – Draw the end of the branch through the cup of your hand. The needles should slide through your hand without coming off. Call today for a personal tour (250) 384-3336 Bright & spacious 2. Stump Test – Bang the stump end sharply on 1 & 2 bed suites (800-1115 sq ft) the ground. A fresh-cut 2 blocks from the Inner Harbour in James Bay tree shouldn’t lose its green needles. Great service package & more 3. Needle Test – Fold a needle until the tip 455 Kingston Street touches the stem, making a circle. decorating that day, store the tree outdside or on a cool porch until decorating. Before setting up the tree, cut two inches (5cm) diagonally off the butt. Use a tree stand with wide-spread legs for better balance and a large water reservoir. A tree may drink up to four litres of water daily, so choose a stand that holds at least that much; check the level daily and refill as needed. If the water drops below the bottom of the butt, a seal will form and a new cut will be needed. Don’t stand the tree near heat sources and don’t block doors or windows. Decorating Use only CSA-certified lights. Test and inspect for cracked bulbs, broken, cracked or frayed wires and discard if faulty. Choose flame-retardant, noncombustible and non-conductive decorations and don’t use electric light strings on metallic trees as a faulty system could create a shock hazard. Avoid “angel hair “(glass wool) – when used with spray-on snow the combination is highly combustible. Finally, turn off tree lights when leaving home or going to bed. Remove the tree within 10 to 14 days, after which even the freshest tree will dry out. Candles Never use lighted candles on Christmas Trees. For candles elsewhere, firefighters recommend battery-operated candles. Real candles should only be lit when a responsible adult is overseing the flame. Place candles in sturdy, non-combustible holders, on sturdy surfaces away from curtains and drafts. Always snuff out candles before leaving the room or going to sleep.

CELEBRATE THE SEASON! • 13

VICTORIA NEWS • OAK BAY NEWS • SAANICH NEWS • GOLDSTREAM NEWS GAZETTE - Wednesday December 11, 2013

Arrive Alive Plan to arrive home safely this season The holiday season is a chance to celebrate with family and friends, but to ensure those celebrations are memorable for all the right reasons, it’s essential to plan ahead to get home safely. If your holiday festivities will involve alcohol, arrange for a designated driver, plan for a taxi, hop on the bus or call a sober friend. During December, an average of five people are killed in B.C. each year in crashes involving impaired driving, police and ICBC noted during the launch of this year’s December CounterAttack compaign. Police across the province will be out in full force at CounterAttack roadchecks this holiday season looking for drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. “Every December, we see people who think they’re okay to drive but end up causing crashes that change lives forever,” said Chief Constable Jamie Graham, Chair of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety Committee. “The hardest aspect of a police officer’s job is telling a family they have lost a loved one as a result of one foolish decision – a loss that could have been prevented. We know there will be many gatherings this holiday season and that’s why officers across the province are dedicated to keeping impaired drivers off our roads.” ICBC supports CounterAttack through an education campaign and funding for enhanced police enforcement and promotes the use of designated drivers with businesses, sports facilities and community groups to help prevent impaired driving and make B.C.’s roads safer for everyone.

before you start drinking. Otherwise it’s too late. • Getting home safe is a shared responsibility; take your turn to be the designated driver. • Keep money aside for transit or a taxi, or call a sober friend. • Don’t get in a car with an impaired driver. Ask to get out of the car if necessary. • Take a stand and don’t let people drive if they are impaired. • Cycling or walking home while impaired is unsafe. Impaired pedestrians and cyclists are a danger to themselves and other road users. • Alcohol affects your ability to function and drive by altering: judgment, reaction time, co-ordination and visual function; ability to steer, track moving objects and brake appropriately; and ability to control your speed and lane position.
