f you want to talk to the new Cowichan Tribes chief, you should know where to find him. William Charles (Chip) Seymour chalked part of his election win Thursday to his promise to boost communication. “Communication was a big issue from people I talked to. People are coming to the band office and found no one to talk to,” he said. “Our previous chief spent lots of time traveling and meeting with (First Nations) hierarchy.” Seymour aims to ask his managers and councillors to handle the routine huddles with government and Native leaders outside Duncan — while he stays closer to home to tend

Tribes members’ concerns. “Most of the time, l’d like to stay here so when people come in looking for help, I’ll be here.” Seymour is settling in to the chief’s chair, formerly held by Harvey Alphonse, after winning Thursday’s election with 354 votes — just 11 more than second-place challenger Howie George. “There won’t be a recount unless Howie wants one. Howie was out campaigning hard,” Seymour said, chuckling about being first-time lucky at his try for chief. The 62-year-old soon-to-be former Tribes maintenance and operations manager also hedged his bets during the election, being reelected to Tribes’ 12-member council. “I’m sitting in the chief’s seat,” he said, indicating he’ll ask council to stage a byelection soon to fill his council seat, and issue a posting

I thought it would be between Harvey and myself,” the chief-elect said. Alphonse finished third with 309 votes. Seymour expects to be busy with a variety of priorities. Educating more Cowichan kids to keep them out of trouble, and in good jobs is one. “Education is a big issue. We need to look at ways to keep our kids in school longer, and increase grad rates. “We’re gunning for 100% soon. I need to start meeting with young people and finding out what problems they’re having,” he said, also targeting school gatherings. Education may also abate alarming suicide

Cause of pizza place ﬁre unknown

The cause of a late November fire that damaged and closed Chemainus’ Pizza Mill is undetermined, the fire marshal says. Rob Clark, North Cowichan’s assistant to the fire commissioner, said the blaze at 9732 Chemainus Road left about $70,000 worth of heat and smoke damage in the insured bistro and building.

An apartment above the pizza place also sustained some smoke damage, Clark noted. “Fire damage was minimal,” he stressed. “It smoked out the whole building.” Smoke blackened Pizza Mill’s interior. It was unknown how long the pizza business will be closed.

The masterpiece of mythical beings is insured by, and on permanent loan from, Island Savings. Joe explains the 8 1/2-foot cedar artwork, carved by Jimmy John, son Norman, and grandson Eddie, is a perfect fit for the $1.3-million centre as a welcoming and guiding work. “It will help guide them here, and back to their destination,” Joe said of the pole depicting a whaler, orcas, and a wolf guiding the hunt. Joe also helped restore the totem, bringing out its original colour as the centre’s centrepiece. That happened at VIU Cowichan, where Joe’s an instructor. His trades students also worked on the pole’s thick, wooden base with

instructor Matt Melgaard, plus Bill Clark and John Lore of Live Edge Designs. The totem sits near a grove of nine interactive display structures exhibiting donated items and trumpeting a forest of Cowichan activities — arching the arts, recreation, wine, and foods to the heritage Kinsol Trestle. The facility opened about two weeks ago, greeting off-season visitors as a prelude to the hot, summer tourist season, explained centre co-ordinator Kirsty Grant. “We’ve had school groups come through from the B.C. Forest Discovery Centre,” she said of the landmark forest museum across the parking lot. That lot, and the road to and from it, will get a $700,000 revamp to deliver visitors to both places. The new visitor centre contains some 3,000 square feet, including room for Duncan Cowichan Chamber of Commerce offices, plus washrooms and more. But the bulk of space holds displays lauding the Warm Land. Sonja Nagel, the chamber’s executive director, said it’s early days in the newly hatched centre — resembling an offbeat-angle version of a Cowichan barn — where managers are open to community ideas about touting the valley’s loft of activities, businesses and culture. For example, there’s plenty of wall space for creations from one of Canada’s largest per-capita concentrations of artists. One display now sports work by

Nagel and Grant were proud of the many valley trades and businesses that helped build the infocentre.

It replaces the chamber’s cramped, 800-square foot headquarters beside what’s now Original Joe’s bistro. Those trades included Gillingham Cabinets, Apex Landscaping, Live Edge (that made the centre’s colossal countertop), and others under main contractor Kinetic Construction of Victoria. The centre’s crowning gem is a unique front door. It’s being hand made by Maple Bay wooden-door master Arnim Rodeck of Shama-

Wood Fine Woodworking. The door is being crafted for the Doman family, in honour of Cowichan’s late timber baron, Herb Doman. The centre’s winter hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. It is happening with help of many groups and organizations. • Mr. Mike’s kicked off its Toy Drive Nov. 30, collecting donations of new, unwrapped toys or gifts (minimum $10 value) will be accepted at the steakhouse until Dec. 22. Donors will also receive a free appie coupon from the restaurant. • Toys and other items were collected by the carload by the folks with the Cowichan Valley Social Media Club and the annual Toys, Toiletries & Toques Fundraiser that wrapped up Nov. 30. • Members of the North Cowichan/ Duncan RCMP crew also kept busy Dec. 7 with the detachment’s annual Stuff a Cruiser campaign, collecting unwrapped toys for the Cowichan Valley Basket Society, which dishes out the goods along with grub at an annual holiday dinner. • Meanwhile, the Salvation Army facilitates its annual toy drive advertising gift tags for children on “Angel Christmas trees” at various locations. have also extended an invitation for families in need to their second annual Boxing Day Dinner. Invites are available at WAVA, Canadian Mental Health, Meals on the Ground or Cowichan Valley Basket Society. Donations for families are also being accepted at the restaurant. • Meanwhile, creators of Operation: Underpants are stoked to be running for a second year, and last year having destroyed their goal of collecting 100 pairs of brand-new underwear for Cowichan’s homeless. This year, the gang’s goal is 500 pairs of new drawers. Drop-off locations are currently at Cowichan Green Community, Cycle Therapy, Maple Bay Rowing Club, and Bound to be Different. Donations will be accepted until Dec. 22. • Socks are pretty essential too. That’s what the folks at Cowichan’s Clements Centre Society think. And that’s why they’re hosting their annual Sock Drive with a hefty goal of collecting 2,013 pairs. Organizers have reported they were just over halfway past their goal but need quite a few more donations to meet it. They’ve extended their deadline until Dec. 20. New socks can be dropped at the centre until that date.

Embracing Cowichan’s spiritual values may also help, Seymour signalled. “If we can go back to our cultural ways, we have a process for grieving and how to be strong. We need to go back there. More involvement from our elders is at the least a first step.” Some members also want transparency about Tribes’ budgets to quell corruption concerns. “Anytime they want to see a copy of our budgets, they’re in the office,” Seymour stressed. “We get audited every year; every penny’s audited then the budget goes to (federal) Aboriginal Affairs. They have to approve it before we get anymore.” Getting more spawning salmon in the Cowichan River is another goal. He wants to work with conservation groups such as One Cowichan, which has been lobbying for local control of spawning release flows. “Council has already started that process by letters of support, and having someone from council join that committee,” he said. Solving chronic black-mould outbreaks in Tribes housing is also on Seymour’s list. He and council aim to meet the feds in Vancouver and address a perceived snub about mouldy-home funding solutions. “We’ve probably got 100 homes that are in pretty bad shape. Some homes with mould are small enough that our staff can deal with it themselves.” Attacking mould could spell jobs amid Seymour’s plans for an employment and training offensives and follow-ups. “We’re trying to improve jobs, and seek employers willing to take our students on as apprentices.” He was aware of opportunities in booming Alberta “but our young people don’t want to move away from home.” The summer’s illegal trash torching and waste dumping, on reserve land near Duncan, upset Seymour. He wants to hire a bylaw specialist to beef Tribes’ waste policies. “We don’t know what’s being dumped — hazardous materials? Plastics?” Tribes will use local municipal bylaws as a template against the wastedisposal wrangles, he explained.

The fir flies at B.C. legislature after tree donation relegated to the back door

he Grinches at the B.C. legislature in Victoria altered a Christmas tradition unexpectedly, removing Michael Fleming’s tree from its rightful place. Fleming, 61, lives in Brentwood Bay and grows trees on Crown land he leases at the south end of Shawnigan Lake as well as operating Christmas tree farms in Brentwood Bay and Saanichton. He has been a providing a tree for the legislature rotunda since he was 16. “I started back when Bill Bennett was premier,’’ he said. During those times of restraint, Fleming bucked the trend. “I

showed up with this 15-foot tree. I didn’t have a big one then,’’ he said. “I started a tradition then.’’ Every year since, Fleming arranged the set-up of a tree three to four weeks in advance of Christmas. “I’m not doing this for myself,’’ he stressed. “I’m doing it to promote B.C. Christmas trees. “My donation is to give to the people of the province. It’s a beautiful place to display a tree.’’ But when Fleming went to the legislature on Nov. 29, it wasn’t business as usual. “I have not seen so much security around the Christmas tree,’’ he said. “They had to let me in. I had an appointment with the minister’s office.’’ When Fleming got there, he discovered a tree had already been

selected from Bartlett Tree Experts and set up. “I was aghast,’’ he said. Fleming had brought his 27-foot grand fir, but was told his tree would be set up “out back.’’ “I’m just scratching my head,’’ he said. Fleming said he was told by government clerk Craig James it was not intended as a slight and his tree would still be displayed in a prime place. Fleming didn’t agree, but couldn’t change the decision. “It’s almost as if the government sets themselves up to do stupid things,’’ he said. Fleming vows this isn’t the end of his long affiliation with the legislature. “I’ll do it again next year,’’ he said.

At about 6:45 p.m., North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP received a report of a badly injured male near Superstore. “Police attended and spoke to the victim who stated he had been sitting by a fire near the black bridge (the railway bridge over the Cowichan River),” said Cpl. Jon Stuart. “Two males came down the path and assaulted him. He was kicked many times, and received extensive

injuries. The males stole his wallet and a small amount of cash, and fled on foot.” The victim was taken to hospital by ambulance. A hospital stay was required to treat his injuries. He suffered several broken bones and lost some teeth, among other injuries. The suspects are described as Native: one tall and skinny; the other shorter and stocky. Police are seeking citizen assistance in identifying and locating the pair. If you have information about this, or any other crime, contact the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522. Public should be concerned about next trafﬁc stop Pompeo: Decision did nothing for public trust

here are all kinds of nuances and implications tied to the David Pompeo sentencing that are worth mentioning. Many are worth in-depth debate and discussion. But the one we keep coming back to is this: We do not see how the community is served by allowing this officer to keep his badge and his gun. This is not a slight on the man’s character as a person. The judge certainly accepted the regret Pompeo expressed about shooting Bill Gillespie was genuine. The support Pompeo received in court in person Safety should and in letters was considerable and demonstrated that his fellow officers take precehold him in some esteem. The trouble is, the issue of Pompeo’s dence character is secondary to the issue of public safety. And if one lesson can be learned in this lengthy court case, it is that David Pompeo with a gun in his hand is a risk. Gillespie is no saint. But on the night in question, his transgressions were failing to pull over immediately when police sounded their sirens, and failing to fall to the ground quickly enough when Pompeo ordered him to do so. Most of us have been pulled over in a routine traffic stop. Some of us haven’t been exactly happy about it and haven’t been very discreet about letting that displeasure show. Very few of us — and rightly so — expected to get shot. Pompeo was convicted because he apparently panicked and fired his gun without good reason; he avoided jail time because his training was apparently faulty. He’s since received further training, but neither of the above scenarios bode well for public safety Do you want to be behind the wheel next time this officer— or any with similar training — makes a “routine traffic stop?”

Christmas book, a small kiddy toy, a couple pairs of jammies and a cool wooden moose Christmas tree ornament. This is all I bought my 11-month-old last Christmas. Go ahead call me a Grinch, Scrooge or plain ol’ cheapskate. Frankly, the little guy was too busy to notice his gifts anyway, and instead enjoyed playing in an empty diaper box I was about to recycle the next day. This year, the little dude is paying more attention to cool choo-choo trains. He now notices the trucks on his jam jams, and loves last year’s tree ornament, even though he calls it a “horsey.” And so here I am falling into the Christmas shopping dilemma.

Do I start a tradition now of sticking to a similar pattern and creating a standard precedence: buy him a book, couple pairs of pajamas, a new ornament and just one or two cool toys? Should I spend/buy more now that he’s paying more attention to what he receives? I recently noticed a Facebook friend asking for advice on Christmas spending as she and her partner were butting heads. It was interesting to see other folks’ spending limits and the reasons why they fork out the dough. Most considered spending an equal amount on each child and spending roughly the same amount every year. Most didn’t mention, though, adjusting their spending sprees based on their family income. You shouldn’t spend more than you can afford; if you’re racking up the plastic, you’re in for trouble.

A report released last week by ICBC conﬁrmed what many have suspected: the Island Highway throughout the valley is one of the riskiest in B.C. The issue is obvious: this stretch of highway — by design is forced to do double duty as both a route through the community and its main street. The solution is closing off access points in many areas, and bypassing Duncan altogether.

And I consider how much I spend anyway throughout the year on the little guy. Let’s be honest, Jack doesn’t go without. Another factor to add to the mix is he gets spoiled rotten anyway at Christmas from his grandparents. What it comes down to is every parent should have a conversation before the shopping frenzy ensues. What’s important to you and what factors do you consider before the cash register rings? Are you and your partner on the same page? I grew up in a household that spent a fair amount, to say the least. My hubby grew up in a household that didn’t go totally overboard. In fact, every year his father donates gifts to a family in need, which I think is amazing. So together, we felt we should try and

establish a middle ground. If your earnings were higher this year, do you spend more (setting a precedence for the next year) or do you set aside some dough for donating gifts instead? Getting back to the personal dilemma, and after digesting the many factors noted’ and having had that discussion with my husband, this year we’re sticking with that pattern I stated above. We’re not going to go overboard. And following in the Degraaf family footsteps, we’re starting our very own tradition of donating to a family in need. Showroom showlist moves across town to River Rock Bar & Grill

Arts leopard Longevity John Falkner (left) landed on his artistic feet in the Silver Bridge Inn’s River Rock Bar & Grill, starting yesterday with Blues Tuesdays. That’s when Thor and the Thundercats host a weekly 8 p.m. compendium of blues, courtesy of guitarist Thor Kristinsson, bassist Martyn Jones, and their guests.

There’s no cover for the blues cruise, nor for any of Falkner’s regular monthly entertainment events starting at 8 p.m. in the River Rock. Dress Rehearsal Mondays is creased for Dec. 16 and 23. The open-mike session is hosted by local The Hardware Girls. First Mondays hear karaoke hosted by Cynthia Brown. Second Mondays feature a bluegrass show,

fueled by two members of Bluegrass Fever. Last Monday’s monthly spell For The Love of Spoken Word, punctuated by valley poet-musician Bill Levity. Watch for an unfolding schedule of arts and culture being booked by Falkner, following his recent move to the Silver Bridge from longtime premises in downtown’s Duncan Garage.

here’s a little bit of everything available this holiday season to boost folk’s Christmas spirit and spring senses into full swing in Cowichan. • Why not start with a viewing of Chemainus Theatre’s classic holiday story It’s a Wonderful Life? The stage adaptation of the 1946 Christmas movie classic runs Wednesday through Sundays until Dec. 31, with matinee and evening shows. News Leader Pictorial reviewer Peter W. Rusland said moviemaker Frank Capra would have liked the merry, musical version. “Sure, it’s hard to beat the creative depth of his 1946 Christmas classic — and the aw-shucks epiphany of Jimmy Stewart,” he writes. “But theatre director/choreographer Peter Jorgensen’s cast and stage band poured us a stiff shot of pre-yuletide cheer during the Nov. 22 heartfelt opener.’’ • If traditional music is your thing, mark down Dec. 15, 2 p.m. on your calendar. Winter Harp is celebrating its 20th Anniversary with an 11-city western Canada Christmas tour, including a stop at the Cowichan Theatre. “On stage, Winter Harp’s extraordinary musicians, clad in glorious medieval attire, perform a collection of music, songs and stories in celebration of winter and Christmas,” states press material. Musical repertoire ranges from heartwarming carols and songs to Celtic, medieval, and world tunes. “Dozens of candles light the stage, with breathtaking backdrops of cathedral and snow,” organizers have promised. “Add in the beautifully carved instruments, and the entire show takes on the look of a luminous pre-Raphaelite painting, with golden Celtic and classical harps, drums, tambourines, temple bells, flutes and an assortment of beautiful ancient and rare instruments.” • If you’re looking for Christmas nostalgia, the folks over at the Cowichan Valley Museum and Archives have something up their sleeves. They’re featuring a train display with glimpses of Duncan’s heritage buildings built from Lego. “Ecole Cobble Hill student Geoff Arrowsmith, 11, constructed models of five heritage buildings especially for our Christmas display, including Duncan city hall, the Duncan Garage, the Cowichan Merchants Building, the Duncan Train Station and the Cowichan Creamery,” states a press release. “Displayed in a snow-covered ‘City of Duncan’, the heritage buildings, and passenger train running through the town, create a charming scene of Christmas past.” This display is on view until Dec. 20. The museum is open Wednesday to Fridays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays 1 to 4 p.m. • Cowichanians are also being encouraged

Forest Discovery Centre’s 1910 steam locomotive as part of its annual Christmas Express event/fundraiser. “All aboard a 1910 steam locomotive through thousands of twinkling lights adorning the 100 acre woods of the B.C. Forest Discovery Centre for the Christmas Express,” sums organizers. “Thousands of visitors over the years have made this a Christmas tradition of attending this colourful and entertaining event.” The event, which also includes light displays, seasonal music, and Christmas crafts, runs on weekends until Sunday, Dec. 22, with the addition of Monday, Dec. 23. The centre opens at 4 p.m. on these dates with train departures every 20 minutes starting at 4:30 p.m. and the last train leaving at 8:30 p.m. • Merridale Cidery is hosting its first-ever and free Enchanting Christmas Orchard Walk. “Imagine twinkling lights on the trees, perhaps a dusting of snow on the orchard floor, and a cup of mulled cider to warm the soul,” states organizers. “Our Christmas Orchard Walk will surely enchant the whole family, but also provide romantic overtures for couples looking for a romantic stroll. Busy like Santa’s elves, we are currently creating holiday displays.” The stroll starts at Santa’s workshop (formerly known as the oxidation hut), and finishes at the Elf’s Work Shop, otherwise known as the faery mining village. “Along the lit path, you will encounter

And there are two options in Cowichan. One is Shawnigan Alliance Church’s annual display on 1603 Wilmot Avenue Dec. 14, with shows at 6 and 7:30 p.m. “Every year we have around 100 volunteers who all take an end, serving and showing the community the story of Christmas,” explained Deborah Gammer. “This year the script is our first in the trilogy and the fourth time we have performed it.” Crafts and carols are also on deck for the 10th-anniversary event. And carrying on the tradition is also the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with its Nativity Pageant Dec. 22 at 1815

The Cowichan Aquatic Centre’s also getting in on the fun with a Breakfast with Santa Dec. 22 featuring a visit with Mr. Claus, a breakfast (9:30 to 11 a.m.) and chance to swim with the jolly fellow and his elves (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.). Aquatic Centre staff are also promoting an Underwater Santa event Dec. 13, 6 to 9 p.m. where folks can pose for a photo with St. Nick under water.

Encore! in a New York state of mind

It may be Christmas, but the women of Cowichan’s Encore! Choir are in a New York state of mind. Rehearsals for the group’s annual Christmas show have been held against the backdrop of preparing for a March trip to perform in the Big Apple’s Lincoln Centre. According to music director, Christine Dandy, the energetic group of 30 singers have been working hard with accompanist, Rykie Avenant. Encore! will perform timeless Christmas favourites like The First Noel, Silent Night and O Holy Night and will be presented in fresh, new arrangements. Vivaldi’s beloved Gloria is also on the agenda, as well as his Laudamus te duet, performed by Heather MacGregor and Trish Dandy. And, of, course, the New York ﬂavour will kick in with Christmas on Broadway, Silver Bells and New York, New York. A Little Christmas with Encore! is scheduled for Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 15 at 2:30 p.m. at Duncan United Church. CUNNAH, Thomas Ishmael (Tex) Passed away December 2, 2013 at the age of 90. Tom is survived by his wife Riki; his children Jim (Bernie), Dan (Barb) and Linda Nicol (Tom) as well as his brother Sam (Norma) and his grandchildren and great grandchildren. HUDDLESTON Lorne Feb 2, 1928 - Dec 2, 2013 Lorne passed away peacefully on December 2, 2013 at Duncan Hospital. Lorne, the son of Harry and Maude Huddleston, was born in Trail, B.C. He spent his school years in Trail and Castlegar. At the age of 17, he volunteered for 5 years Naval Service. He completed basic training as Stoker 2nd class and also earned his Watch Keeping Ticket serving on HMCS Charlottetown, Warrior, Rockcliffe, and Antigonish. Following his naval service, Lorne worked in HMC Dockyard for 5 years in the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Shop. He then moved to South Cooking Lake where his grandparents had homesteaded and worked for the Alberta Government in Edmonton. Returning to the Island, he settled in Honeymoon Bay and had several jobs before becoming a custodian for the local school district. He worked at Stanley Gordon Elementary and LCSS until he retired. Lorne was a proud member of Legion Branch #210 and the Elks Club in Lake Cowichan. In his retirement, he enjoyed travelling to Mexico, England, Spain, Hong Kong, and South Africa as well as day trips with the Arbutus Travel Club in Duncan. He also enjoyed activities at the Lake Cowichan Seniors Centre especially when there was music involved. Lorne was predeceased by his brother Art and his sister Faith. He is survived by his brother-in-law Stan, his nephews Stan ( Joanne ) and Curt ( Zoe ), his nieces Vivian and Barb ( Doug ) and many great-nephews and great-nieces. He will also be missed by his many close friends and neighbors in Honeymoon Bay and Lake Cowichan. His family appreciates the loyal support and care they have given to Lorne especially in the last few years. In memory of Lorne, donations to the BC Cancer Foundation would be appreciated. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, December 14 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 375 Brae Road, Duncan, B.C. Reception will follow.

magine an organization which has donated funds for more than 65 consecutive years to support cancer patient care, research and equipment. Now imagine the commitment of thousands of members hosting socials and teas, bazaars, raffles and other fund-raisers, as well as giving freely of their time to meet their charitable goals. According to Ruth Foster, Director of Cancer Activities for the O.E.S., â€œThere are four categories of annual giving: educational bursaries, equipment, supplies and Cancer Dressings.â€? Last year, $8,362.29 was collected from the sale of cancelled stamps and postcards throughout British Columbia and Yukon to be distributed for Cancer Research or Cancer Dressings, wherever it is needed. (We must thank our friends in the community for keeping us well supplied with stamps.) Sunset Chapter #44, Duncan has one of our 39 Cancer Dressing Stations, located downstairs in the Mercury Theatre on Brae Road, Duncan. Last year, throughout our jurisdiction, 170 dedicated members volunteered 8120 hours producing 69,708 cancer dressings at a cost of $9,599.91. (Weâ€™ve used up inventory on hand, which once again reduced expenses. There is a need for dressings in Northern BC, so these numbers will likely increase next year.)

The wild card route to making the provincial AA senior girls’ AA volleyball championships didn’t quite work out for Brentwood College. Brentwood played three matches in the four-team event on the Lower Mainland to determine one wild card berth in the provincials.

Brentwood defeated Princess Margaret in two sets 25-17, 25-18 but then lost to M.E.I. 25-15, 23-25, 12-15 and St. Patrick’s 20-25, 16-25. “We played scared but I think our young team learned an immeasurable amount,’’ noted Brentwood coach Jill Fougner. “It was the first time in nine

years that we have not been at a provincial championship.’’ That was a bit hard to take but things look promising for next season with the bulk of the team returning becoming a year older and wiser from the experience by the time they return to the court again.

North Surrey won a pair of twopoint games en route to the title of the senior boys’ event, including a 6058 decision over the host Cowichan Thunderbirds and 71-69 over Dover Bay in Saturday’s final. “We were hoping to be in the final of our own tournament,’’ said Cowichan coach Sandeep Heer. “We were almost there.’’ But the T-Birds dug themselves a big hole against North Surrey, trailing 36-27 at halftime before making a run and falling just short in the semifinal. A chance to tie at the buzzer didn’t work out. “We came out slow, but in the second quarter we showed a lot of heart battling back after being down by 16 points,’’ noted T-Birds’ guard Brayden Aumen. “In the fourth, we held North Surrey to five points, but it wasn’t enough, falling by two points in the heartbreaking loss.’’ The T-Birds opened the tournament by clobbering Gulf Islands Thursday, building a 35-23 lead at halftime, 56-39 after the third quarter and winning 68-47. “Our big men dominated down low at the start of the game,’’ observed Aumen. “We went from there and won by 20.’’ North Surrey defeated Belmont 7951, Wellington topped Brookswood 61-40 and Dover Bay knocked off West Vancouver 83-71 in Thursday’s

for scoring four tries or more to lock up the Times Colonist Cup. Miraculously, they managed to do that with no problem, beating Velox 24-5. “We got off to a great start, scoring our four tries in the first 20 minutes,’’ noted Cowichan coach Gord McGeachy. The first three were of the spectacular vari-

ety from long range, starting from deep inside Cowichan’s own half. Owen Wood got Cowichan on the board with an early try and also converted. It wasn’t long before Andrew Wright followed suit with two tries that originated with Cowichan ballhandling far from the Velox posts. Robbie McDonnell capped off the fourth

try following some nice grinding work by the forwards and that was it for the day. “As the day went on, conditions got worse and ball-handling became very difficult and the mistakes became plentiful, but some great defence allowed us to hang on and only concede one try the rest of the way,’’ summarized McGeachy.

The Caps returned home to face the Vernon Vipers Saturday and also lost that one 3-2. “As well as we played Saturday night, I was happy with the effort, I can’t say the same for Friday night,’’ said Beatty. He was at a loss to explain the reasons for such a listless game against Alberni. “We had a good practice Thursday, one of the bestpaced practices we’ve had all year,’’ Beatty said. The Caps are trying to avoid falling into the Island Division cellar. They have just a two-point cushion on the Bulldogs, but have played one more game. The Caps held the lead on Alberni in the latest meeting of the teams, as Myles Powell scored the lone goal during the first period. But Alberni scored three straight in the second before Colton Kehler cut the margin to one, but that’s as close as the Caps came. Mitch Makin scored his second of the period for the Bulldogs and Tryg Strand added an empty-netter in the third. The Caps fell behind 3-0 against the Vipers Saturday and almost found their way back to tie it. “It wasn’t enough,’’ said Beatty. “I thought we had lots of pushback when we got down.’’ The Caps are also hosting the Penticton Vees Saturday in Steen Cooper’s return to Cowichan Arena. Cooper has four points in his first three games with the Vees, including a goal and an assist Friday in a 5-4 win over Merritt. One of the players the Caps received from the Vees, defenceman Clint Filbrandt, has finally reported and will see his first action with the team this weekend. But Ambrose Firkus, acquired from West Kelowna for Taki Pantziris, did not report and Beatty traded him Tuesday to the Okotoks Oilers of the Alberta Junior Hockey League for Taylor Allan, 18. “Taylor has skill and grit,’’ noted Beatty. “He is a player that has been on the Caps’ radar and is a good fit for our team.’’ Despite some of the extensive lineup shuffling of late, Beatty still feels things are settling down and he’s looking for big things from the players in the last games at home before the Christmas break. “I think we’re going in the right direction,’’ he said.

Seth Davis The chain of command has shifted with the Cowichan Valley Midget Tier 1 Capitals hockey team, leaving Seth Davis at the top. Grade 12 Cowichan Secondary School student Davis, a strong-two way defenceman, is the captain of the team this season. “It’s just a different step because there’s a lot of young guys on the team,’’ he said. “I’m trying to run their warm-ups and everything. It’s a lot harder, I guess.’’ Coach Aaron Spotts likes how Davis has assumed the team’s leadership role. “He’s been good offensively and defensively,’’ said Spotts. “He’s really picked up his game from last year. You can tell he worked hard in the summer and got himself better. Now he’s having success at this level and he’s then obviously wanting to move on to Kerry Park or the next level at Junior B.’’ Davis has already been called up to the Islanders for a few Junior B games. “It’s tough,’’ he said of the transition. “I’m just going to keep working.’’ Davis is concentrating on specific parts of his game to prepare for whatever comes after midget. “Just honestly fitness and keeping my strength up and working on my shot, too,’’ he said.

eing shut out in two of three Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League games didn’t entirely tell the tale of the Kerry Park Islanders’ weekend play. The Islanders were blanked 8-0 by the suddenly high-flying Storm Friday night in Campbell River, but bounced back to play extremely well in a 4-2 victory over the Peninsula Panthers and a tough 2-0 loss to the powerful Victoria Cougars Sunday in back-to-back games at Kerry Park Arena. The loss of Armand Uomoleale definitely took some starch out of the Islanders’ attack. Uomoleale started the season with the Cowichan Valley Capitals before being reassigned to the Islanders but has left to seek other Junior A opportunities. The Islanders soldiered on but also didn’t have Alex Milligan available Friday due to suspension and Eric Mansueti and Tylor Branzsen due to sickness. Needless to say, they got thumped by the Storm. Branzsen and Mansueti both returned to score key goals in the win over the Panthers. Defenceman Jordan Coyne also scored for the Islanders and Mil-

owichan’s Junior Thunderbirds are winning by large margins early in the basketball season. The Junior T-Birds were at the Victoria Tipoff boys’ tournament and romped to the title by outscoring Lambrick Park 60-36 in the final. “It is unusual to win in a final by 24 points,’’ noted co-coach Lucky Walia. “The cause for the scores is probably a combination of us playing well and our opponents not quite finding their footing just yet.’’ Humza Khan led the scoring with 30 points and Connor Hayer added 22, as Cowichan ran away with the game. Cowichan was held to 39 points in the semifinal but gave up a meagre 24 in crushing Ballenas. Hayer and Khan were the top scorers with 11 and 10 points, respectively. The quarterfinal opening game brought a 62-28 rout for Cowichan over Vanier. Double-digit scoring consisted of 17 points from Khan, 16 from Hayer and another 14 from Noah Charles. The Junior T-Birds played an exhibition game Thursday at Cowichan Secondary School that preceded the tournament and throttled Gulf Islands 77-16. Charles was the top scorer with 18 points and Hayer added 11. “We have an opportunity to be a strong team, however, the operative word is team,’’ Walia pointed out. “If we can get all the parties pulling in the same direction, continue working hard, understand that these results are a snapshot of where we are right now — not necessarily where we will be later on — and get some luck along the way, this group will continue to have some good results. “Their work ethic and commitment to this point has been strong. All the guys have made things happen.’’
