Three social service agencies in Abbotsford are struggling to raise enough funds during their Christmas campaigns, at a time when demand for programs and services is higher than ever. Funds raised at the Abbotsford Food Bank and Christmas Bureau, the Salvation Army, and Cyrus Centre support the agencies for the work

they do throughout the year. Food bank manager Dave Murray said the organization has set a goal of $800,000. As of Monday, about $350,000 had been collected. He said the food bank this year has experienced a hike of about 200 families needing support, bringing the monthly total number of people served to as many as 4,000. The food bank operates as the Christmas

Bureau at this time of year, providing gifts and food hampers for families who qualify. It also provides the Sponsor-a-Family program in which registered families can be sponsored by individuals, businesses or churches to receive Christmas gifts. The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) has followed up last year’s controversial Christmas card with a sequel. This year, Santa – Chief Bob Rich in disguise – acknowledges he might have been naughty in 2012 when he sported full tactical gear and carried an assault rifle. The new holiday card depicts Santa writing the line “I will not play with guns” on a chalkboard, as a stern Mrs. Claus – portrayed by APD Insp. Carol Powell – watches over him. Cheekily tucked into Santa’s right boot is a handgun. Const. Ian MacDonald said the card is an acknowledgment that last year’s version offended some people and that “even Santa makes mistakes,” although he estimates 90 per cent of the public response the APD received in 2012 was positive. MacDonald said the objective of the holiday card is the same as last year. In 2012, the card was sent out not only to the APD’s regular list of recipients, but to almost 100 offenders in the community. The greeting on the inside

This year’s version of the Abbotsford Police Department’s Christmas card is an acknowledgement that the 2012 iteration offended some people, said Const. Ian MacDonald. encouraged them to make different choices in life and to contact the APD if they wanted to make a change. MacDonald said four of these offenders came forward to the APD and thanked them for the message. “One of them even referred to his arrest as a rescue,” he said.

About 80 cards are being mailed to offenders again this year with a similar note to consider making a lifestyle change. “I hope that a good number of the people who get this card really stop and think about their lives. “I hope they actually try to make a change. They can

choose a different life and everybody needs to know that’s always within their power,” said Rich. The 2012 card attracted worldwide media attention, including mentions on television shows such as Live with Kelly and Michael and CNN journalist Anderson Cooper’s former talk show.

Harm reduction bylaw amendment to public hearing City of Abbotsford reviewing policies, hosting forums, since 2010 Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

A bylaw prohibiting harm reduction services in Abbotsford will be reconsidered after council passed first reading of a bylaw amendment that would remove restrictions on the services. The issue will now go to public hearing, likely at the Jan. 13 council meeting. Mayor Bruce Banman said although council has listened to the public at forums earlier this year, it is now time to bring the issue to a formal hearing. In 2005, council unanimously passed the controversial zoning bylaw prohibiting harm reduction services, including needle exchanges, mobile dispensing vans, safe injection sites and other similar uses. But in 2010, the Fraser Health Authority (FHA) and the Hepatitis C Council of British Columbia called on the city to

re-examine the bylaw. FHA estimates there are approximately 280 to 470 injection drug users in Abbotsford, many lacking access to health care. FHA also stated that Abbotsford has a hepatitis C infection rate of 64.4 per 100,000 people – higher than the regional, provincial and national averages. Since 2010, the city has been reviewing its policies, holding public forums and conducting a technical review. In April, council directed staff to prepare an amendment to the bylaw, and create a “good neighbour agreement” that would help mitigate the impact of harm reduction services. That includes how services will be provided, the hours and location, and efforts to deal with potential impacts such as disorder, criminal activity, complaints, amendments and enforcement. Department (APD), staff prepared a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between FHA, APD and the city to establish guidelines for implementing and reviewing an Abbotsford-based harm reduction program. Currently, the city is facing a civil lawsuit and a human rights complaint from drug users in regard to the anti-harm reduction bylaws, stating the city has overstepped its jurisdiction by determining health care, as well as discriminating against drug users. At the time the lawsuit was launched in May, Scott Bernstein, the lawyer representing drug users and the BC/Yukon Drug War Survivors, expressed concern about allowing the issue to go to a public hearing, stating that a judge – not the public – should determine whether the bylaw should be repealed.

Film scene alarms public

A resident of an Abbotsford townhouse complex was concerned Sunday when he saw a man in the neighbourhood carrying a gun and covered in blood. Police were called to the complex on Cannon Avenue for what they thought was a serious situation. Heavily armed officers cordoned off the area, brought in a dog unit, and then called out the occupants of the condo where the bloodied man had been seen. That’s when the situation became clear. Two teens and a 25-year-old man had been filming a short movie. Both the gun and the blood were fake.

Police recommended to the trio that in future they let neighbours know when they were going to be filming similar scenes. They also suggested giving police an advance call. The man involved in the filmmaking indicated in online posts that the film was being made for YouTube. He said the two teens, both under the age of 16, are his cousins, and the trio film movies on a weekly basis as a hobby. He said the three have apologized to their neighbours and, in future, will ensure they inform the neighbourhood and police when they are going to be filming realistic scenes that could be alarming.

challenges in its annual campaign, which has a goal of $500,000. Spokeswoman Deb Lowell said demand for services has grown. The number of meals served in the meal centre went up 11 per cent this year, while the number of “bed nights” of shelter rose 43 per cent. Lowell said more than 5,000 people are served each month by the Salvation Army. The organization’s main source of fundraising at this time of year is the Red Kettle Campaign. There are currently 20 kettles in Abbotsford and Mission, and more volunteers are needed. Those interested can call 604-309-0660 to sign up. The organization also runs its Angel Tree program at Sevenoaks Shopping Centre. The public is invited to remove a paper angel from the tree, purchase a new unwrapped gift for the child listed, and drop off the gift back at the tree. Also seeking support during its Christmas fundraising campaign is Cyrus Centre, which provides services for at-risk youth. Executive director Les Talvio said the centre has so far raised about $15,000 toward its $150,000 goal. He said this is down significantly from where twhe campaign was last year at this time. Cyrus Centre provides hot meal, showers, laundry, life skills, employment coaching, emergency shelter, and more to kids ages 12 to 18. As well, Cyrus House recently opened to provide four youths with a permanent residence with house parents. In addition to funds, Cyrus Centre is looking for donations of items such as coffee, hot chocolate, sugar, toilet paper, bath towels, disposable cups/ plates, girls’ socks, boys’ boxer shorts, and gift cards for Tim Hortons, McDonald’s, and grocery stores. Space needed for extreme weather shelter beds

This past weekend brought bitter cold to the Fraser Valley, and left extreme weather shelter coordinator Dave Murray looking for new spaces for those with no place to go. Extra beds are available from November to March whenever the community issues an extreme weather alert, often when temperatures drop below zero. The beds are funded by the provincial government through BC Housing and seek to help homeless individuals through the seasonâ€™s coldest nights. Abbotsford has about 40 beds for adults at the Salvation Army with about 10 beds for youth at Cyrus Centre. Most years, there are also churches that provide additional spaces when necessary. But Murray said this December there is no church available for the extreme weather program, though there are arrangements in place for January, February and March. Facing a cold front with wind chills of minus 20 Celsius on Friday, Murray began unsuccessfully looking for additional space for the night. The Salvation Army recorded 33 people entering extreme weather

said creating a variety of shelters could bring more people in. Draper said it is time to start considering creative options when it comes to providing shelters, but said that there is always a concern for people who donâ€™t want to come inside. Deb Lowell, public relations director at the Salvation Army, said they want people to know that there are additional spots available during extreme weather. Lowell said they have outreach workers trying to connect with those living outdoors, letting them know about the spots, as well as providing warm clothes to those who donâ€™t want to come in. Lowell said that mental health or substance abuse issues can keep some people accessing shelter, among other reasons. Les Talvio, executive director of the Cyrus Centre for at-risk youth, also has extreme weather beds open specifically for youth and will welcome young people who need shelter. â€œWe wonâ€™t turn anyone away in extreme weather â€“ because the only other option is the outdoorsâ€Ś They can come in, they can stay warm. Weâ€™ll give them a hot chocolateâ€Ś gloves, tuques, whatever we can do.â€?

Murray said he is hoping to find an additional space for cold nights, but is also looking to rent a space in January, February and March to house an additional temporary shelter â€“Â adding that any plan would require due diligence, consulting with neighbours and going through the necessary process. â€œWe need somebody to step up. We need a space near the downtown core, or a space we can rent somewhere on South Fraser Way. Something that the homeless people can get to.â€? He said they are working to establish a low-barrier shelter, but the proper space may be hard to come by. Murray said that â€œlow-barrierâ€? wouldnâ€™t mean that drugs or drug use would be allowed on premises, but rather that people who are slightly inebriated or who use drugs would be admitted for the night. Ward Draper, of the 5 and 2 Ministries, is working with Murray to help find more space. Draper said some shelters have specific rules that can stop homeless people from staying the night. He

Move on harm reduction

The City of Abbotsford’s ponderous deliberations over its 2005 harm reduction bylaw appear to finally be moving to a conclusion that should have been reached long ago. This week, council passed first reading of an amendment that would remove restrictions on services such as needle exchanges and mobile dispensing vans, which have been on the street, off the official radar, for some time. However, final approval won’t be given until after a formal public hearing, which will be yet another round of supportive and opposing input that’s been aired many times in recent years. The positions on harm reduction are quite clear. In 2010, the Fraser Health Authority (FHA) urged Abbotsford to rescind its bylaw. FHA estimates there are approximately 280 to 470 injection drug users in Abbotsford, many lacking access to health care. The health agency has also stated that Abbotsford has a hepatitis C infection

rate of 64.4 per 100,000 people – higher than the regional, provincial and national averages. The city is facing a civil lawsuit and a human rights complaint from drug users in regard to the anti-harm reduction bylaws, maintaining the city has overstepped its jurisdiction by determining health care. Meanwhile, opponents to harm reduction measures say that approach raises public security issues, condones drug use, and doesn’t address core addiction. Those are fair points, but they don’t address the problems that have existed prior to and after the 2005 bylaw, which was more about avoidance than action. Drug rehabilitation services are provincial and federal responsibilities, and while the city should exert its influence on both levels of government to improve those programs, it should not be standing in the way of basic measures that save lives and reduce public health costs. Passing this mitigating bylaw shouldn’t be a hard decision for council.

Other Hand On Sunday, at the urging of family – mostly because I think they wanted me out of the house – I spent three hours (and $9 in parking fees) in the hospital’s emergency department. I’d severely twisted my knee the day before, and Sunday morning the overnight accumulation of fluid around the joint made me look like someone with elephantitis. Additionally, before I could get out of bed I needed to have an ancient pair of crutches rooted out of the basement. What made me smile at the hospital was the repeated question: “Where does it hurt?” It doesn’t. “Where did it hurt when you did it?” It didn’t!

Actually not the whole truth, but the “injury” was not an entirely painful experience. As a matter of fact, most of the “pain” was in having to wait the three hours to see a doctor who essentially told me there was no damage that time won’t heal. However, don’t take that as a major complaint, because the care and attention I did receive was excellent. What I did find surprising was that there were so few people in the waiting room. Bit of a contrast to what I’ve read about Surrey where, with a new emergency department five times the size of the old one, it is already over-stressed and overpacked with people. Maybe I just “picked” a good day at ARHCC. Nonetheless, other than the $3 an hour parking fee for the emergency department – which is enough to make you whine about the wait time – we should feel pretty happy about the care in Abbotsford. On the other hand, if the highway signs I see on the freeway and approaches to

The letter writer claimed that, as a Canadian returning home with sealed dairy products taken with him south but not consumed on his short trip, his declared products were confiscated. So it appears unopened and sealed Canadian dairy products, possibly produced right here in Abbotsford, can’t be brought back into our country, yet anyone can fill up the back seat with American milk and cheese and have no problem bringing them in. That doesn’t make sense to me. So, as the letter writer suggests, shouldn’t we either disallow importation of all dairy products, or allow Canadian products to be brought back under the same exemptions we have for U.S.-produced dairy goods?

Independent school parents subsidize the public system Re: Tax dollars should only be used for public purposes, Dec. 3 edition. It seems that every few years the topic of public funding for independent schools appears in the public forum. Ms. Norton writes: “How can you state that the 35-50 per cent funding independent schools receive does not draw resources from the public school system? Of course it does.” I beg to differ. Parents of students in B.C.’s independent schools (approximately 10 per

cent of today’s student population) pay provincial school taxes while paying tuition fees at their respective schools of choice. Independent school buildings and properties, where their children attend, are financed by privatelysupplied funding – not tax dollars. In addition, half the operating costs are derived from donations and tuition fees. In 1997, when this matter was debated in the Legislative Assembly, then-education minister Paul Ramsey (NDP), stated

that if all independent school students were in the public system, it would result in an additional cost of $200 million. Furthermore, he said that the capital costs to provide classrooms and materials for those students would impose an additional $1 billion burden on the public purse which, in his words, “is more than a debt plan could sustain” (Hansard, July 21, 1997). Were it not for independent schools, there would be even fewer dollars per student for educa-

tion in B.C. In other words, contrary to Ms. Horton’s assertion, parents in independent school communities are subsidizing public education. True choice would be to allow parents the freedom to divert their education tax dollars to the school of their choice, and in return, no government funding would be spent on independent schools (I am not advocating this). A paraplegic man whose treatment by Abbotsford Police in 2007 was declared by a B.C. Supreme Court judge as “outrageous, egregious and inexcusable” is suing the department for damages. Among the claims being made by Ryan Austin Moonie, 37, in the civil suit, filed Nov. 27 in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver, is that after his wheelchair was taken away from him while he was in a detention cell following his arrest, he was denied access to bathroom facilities. He states that he then soiled himself and was not given a change of clothes before having to appear in court the following morning. Moonie also states that he was not provided with the majority of his medication, was not provided with bathroom supplies despite repeated requests, was not permitted to call his father for assistance, and was moved around the detachment in an office chair rather than a wheelchair. These claims were the subject of a B.C. Supreme Court decision, released publicly in October, which threw out all

drug and weapons charges that Moonie faced following his 2007 arrest. The Crown has not appealed the decision. Justice Kathleen Ker ruled that Moonie’s charter rights were breached during a 17-hour period that included his arrest and his time in the Abbotsford Police Department’s custody. In her decision, Ker stated such actions are “inexcusable in the 21st century.” Moonie was detained and arrested on Nov. 27, 2007 after police obtained a warrant to search his Abbotsford home in relation to a suspected marijuana grow-op. According to the court documents, among the items seized by police were 850 pot plants, a loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol, a loaded .22-calibre handgun, a loaded rifle and two bags containing almost 500 grams of marijuana. After being transported to the APD lockup and booked into a cell on an outstanding warrant from Vancouver, his wheelchair and transfer board were taken away. Instead, Moonie, who had been paralyzed in a 2004 motorcycle crash, was provided with only a styrofoam cup into which to empty his catheter.

Early the next morning, an officer arrived to transport Moonie from his cell for his bail hearing, and Moonie advised him that he had soiled himself during the night. He requested clean clothes but was told there were none available. Ker said Moonie was not given access to his wheelchair and was moved from his cell to the loading bay in an office chair with wheels. There was no ramp available. In his civil suit, Moonie is seeking general, aggravated, special and exemplary damages, as well as special costs. Const. Ian MacDonald could not comment on the civil lawsuit, but in relation to the Supreme Court case, said the APD has changed its procedures and protocols in the detention area in relation to detainees accessing medication and medical supplies. A wheelchair ramp has since been installed in the loading bay, and a wheelchair has been acquired for the cells area. Additionally, recommendations have been made in regards to staff training that would, in part, include the treatment of detainees with disabilities.

Milt Walker, chair of The Reach’s board of directors, said Greening will be missed. “She has been able, during her five years in Abbotsford, to raise the bar very high in spearheading the acquisition of exhibitions that were previously only available to larger cities,” he said. “She has maintained the integrity of The Reach as a class ‘A’ gallery and museum and leaves behind a legacy and solid foundation the arts community can continue to build on.” Walker said it is a testament to Greening and to The Reach that Audain – one of Canada’s leading art collectors and philanthropists – found the executive director for his new gallery in Abbotsford, following an international search. Greening’s replacement has not yet been hired.

FVRD looks at partnering with UFV on incinerator awareness Alina KONEVSKI Abbotsford News

The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) might soon be helping the regional district raise awareness about Vancouver’s planned waste-to-energy (WTE) incinerator. Patricia Ross, a director with the Fraser Valley Regional District and an Abbotsford city councillor, has been talking with UFV about partnering on the issue. “What form that actually plays out into we’re not sure at this point. It just came out of a brainstorming session with some folks at UFV who wanted to do something to raise awareness about this issue,” said FVRD co-chair Patricia Ross. “They could perhaps conduct some research for us, as it pertains to agriculture or health, or maybe informally, the students would like to rally and do some lobbying efforts.” After UFV offered to help the regional dis-

trict with its work on WTE, the FVRD board approved sending a formal letter to the university requesting “to create partnership synergies and effective working relationships on air quality issues associated with the proposed incinerator.” Chair Sharon Gaetz

The FVRD has been a staunch opponent to Metro Vancouver’s plans to build a wasteto-energy garbage incinerator. On Nov. 21, Gaetz said that FVRD was considering legal action against Metro Vancouver to prevent the construction of another incinerator.

letter of thanks that had been sent to city hall, mistaking the scene as a city initiative. The Brauns are the former owners of Clearbrook Plaza, where the scene was displayed at a fountain on the corner. Braun said the figures – which are threequarter-sized statues – were designed by a company that was involved in movie productions. “They tried to capture the scene from a biblical perspective… It took them two or three months to do all the research.” After the initial figures were made, the family provided maintenance of the nativity

and added a figure each year, ultimately creating a set that included Jesus, Mary and Joseph, as well as the three wise men, shepherds, an angel, animals and more within a barn-like structure. The family first erected the nativity in 2001 and continued for nearly a decade. At that time the property was sold, though to whom, Braun is not contractually allowed to disclose. He said the nativity was sold along with the property, as it was a gift to the tenants and the community. The new owners of the Clearbrook Plaza put up the display for two years, but didn’t this year due to the expense.

Braun said it generally cost about $20,000 to set up and take down the nativity. “I know it was a cost, but for us it was just a gift to the community.” When the property sold, Braun asked to be notified if the display was not going to go up. He said at the beginning of December he was told by the property managers that would be the case this season. He began to inquire about finding the nativity a new home, and a local church has now expressed interest in displaying the nativity this Christmas. Braun said he is optimistic that a solution can be found soon.

Songs Strings and Steps presents Home for Christmas Performance features Calvin Dyck and the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra This holiday season, Songs Strings and Steps will present Home for Christmas, a performance that involves more than 150 actors singers and musicians. Home for Christmas is directed by Calvin Dyck and staged by Sylvia Friesen, and takes the audience on a memorable journey by steam train. Featured are the sights and sounds of the station, the old-fashioned ticket wicket, the train and its steam, porters, ticket punchers and, of course, a conductor. The passengers include the strings of the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra, the voices of Vancouver’s Jubilate choir conducted by Larry Nickel, pianist Mel

Bowker, the Pilkey Sisters, jazz singer Courteney Rodda, dancers, the popular MEI Drumline – and the audience. The show will features many traditional and new favourites like White Christmas, Song for a Winter’s Night, Christmas in Killarney, Little Drummer Boy, I Heard the Bells, and the final performance, when all will sing O Holy Night. The show will also feature audience participation, including several singalongs, and Dyck said the performance will also feature a carol contest. “The audience has three carols to vote on during intermission. Two of the carols are by local Fraser Valley composers

Stan Gubiotti and Joyce Janzen, and the last by Gail Poulsen from Ontario. In addition to prize money, the winning carol will be published. A jury selected the top three submissions to be performed at this year’s concert. The winner will be announced during the Saturday evening performance.” The performance will be held at Central Heights Church on McCallum Road on Friday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale at House of James in Abbotsford and King’s Music in Chilliwack and Abbotsford. Santa’s elves were busy all year at a seniors’ complex in Abbotsford, and the results of their handiwork went to local charities on Thursday. Hundreds of wooden toys, jewelry boxes, dolls and knitted items were distributed by the seniors of Crown Point Villas II on McCallum Road during their annual open house. About 20 residents work year round to make the items. A group of men form the toymakers, meeting every morning at the on-site workshop to produce trucks, trains, pull toys, airplanes, jewelry boxes, and doll cradles and beds. A dozen women form the craft group to knit, crochet and sew children’s clothing, as well as clothing for Barbies and baby dolls that are donated or purchased from thrift stores. One woman paints images on the cradles, while others make bed-

ding to fit inside. Some of them also make jewelry to fill the wooden boxes that are crafted by the men. One woman who is visually impaired knitted 100 scarves this year. All the materials are donated to the group or are purchased from donated funds. This year, for example, staff at Clayburn Dental donated 150 toothbrushes, dental floss and tubes of toothpaste to be included in packages that are filled with candy and personal hygiene items. A knitted scarf is tied around each package. These bags are distributed at Christmas, but will also be given out in January to local homeless people. The collection of items was split up this year among six Abbotsford groups: the Food Bank and Christmas Bureau, the Salvation Army, New Beginnings, the transition house, Peardonville House, and victims’ services.

Funds raised during the eighth annual Downtown Abbotsford Car Show were recently presented to Matthew’s House. A $10,000 cheque went to the respite facility for children with severe disabilities. Matthew’s House celebrated its grand opening in November as part of the Campus of Care on Marshall Road next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. The site provides respite care for up to five children at a time in a state-of-theart residence – operated by Communitas Supportive Care Society – staffed by experienced caregivers. Paul MacLeod and Bob King have been involved with the car show since its inception. The event has supported Matthew’s House for several years. MacLeod is the grand-

father of Matthew Froese, for whom the facility is named and who passed away in August 2010 at the age of nine. Matthew’s parents, Doug and Andrea, started the facility. Communitas resource development coordinator Alan Cavin said it was a great experience to see the support of all the car show volunteers and that of the Downtown Abbotsford Business Association. “It was humbling to think all this was to honour the legacy of Matthew Froese and his parents’ dream for a respite care home here in Abbotsford,” he said. The slam dunk is the quintessential basketball highlight, but a really great shot-block can be just as sweet. Patrick Vandervelden of the Yale Lions had such a play two weeks ago during his team’s home tourney. Facing the Bateman T-Wolves, Vandervelden charged out at a threepoint shooter, unfurled his 6’9” frame and hammered the ball off the wall. “The crowd just erupted,” he recalled with a grin. “It changed the game’s momentum for us.” Vandervelden, who played for the B.C. U17 team last summer, is best known for shot-blocking (he had 11 in one game last season), but Lions coach Al Friesen says the development of his all-around game is “fun to watch.”

As a standout in both basketball and volleyball, Tessa Ratzlaff had options that most high school athletes can only dream of. But variety can also tend to complicate things, and the MEI senior found it difficult to whittle things down to one post-secondary destination. She recently knocked that off her to-do list, though, signing with the Trinity Western women’s basketball program. She’ll join the Spartans in the fall of 2014. In the meantime, Ratzlaff has a promising senior season to attend to. Her Eagles are ranked No. 7 in AAA, led by the dynamic post duo of Ratzlaff and Taylor Claggett. “We work well together,” Ratzlaff said. “If teams are doubling one of us, the other will be open.”

Mouat Hawks Bateman senior boys coach Virinder Braich calls Jerome Carretas his most versatile player, and that versatility shone through during the photo shoot for this article. Asked whether he knew how to spin the ball on his finger, Carretas asked, “Which finger?” and proceeded to rotate the ball on all five digits with the greatest of ease. The T-Wolves are a smallish team, even more so due to injuries they’re enduring early in the season. The six-foot Carretas, a talented guard, has proven to be their Swiss Army knife – he has the ability to play any of the five positions on the floor as the need arises. “It’s really physical down there (in the paint), but I like it and I’m used to it,” he said.

Abby Traditional’s Grade 11 girls basketball players are an awfully special group. Back in 2011, during their Grade 8 year, they won the Fraser Valley championship and finished third at provincials – tremendous accomplishments for a smaller school that wasn’t previously well-known for athletics. They’ve had a couple athletes transfer out since then, but the remaining core has gelled into a speedy, fast-breaking squad. Leading the way is shooting guard Amara Hundal. “I’ve been playing with most of the girls since Grade 6,” she said, reflecting on her team’s bond. “We’re just really great friends, and basketball brings us closer.”

Given how brightly the spotlight figures to shine on him during his senior season, Tristan Etienne might consider wearing sunscreen 24/7. The prodigious 6’10” centre – arguably the best big-man prospect from B.C. since current NBA players Rob Sacre (L.A. Lakers) and Kelly Olynyk (Boston Celtics) – recently landed a full-ride scholarship from the University of Washington Huskies, an NCAA Div. 1 program. His Hawks began the season ranked No. 3 in the new AAAA tier, and they got off to a great start, knocking off the No. 1 Tamanawis Wildcats of Surrey 75-67 in exhibition action. “It’s still early, so we can’t make too much of it, but it’s a confidence-booster,” said Etienne, who notched 31 points and 14 rebounds.

Abby Christian Knights When the Abby Christian Knights walk into a gym, people can’t help but stare. It’s not every day that you see an AA girls program with three players in excess of six feet tall, but that’s precisely the luxury the Knights enjoy with Moriah Konynenbelt, Amanda de Waal and Rebekah Van Huizen. “During warm-up, other teams will just watch,” Konynenbelt said with a chuckle, reflecting on the intimidating shadow her team casts. “It’s kind of like, ‘Oh hi, we’re nice, I swear.’” Konynenbelt, at 6’2”, is the Knights’ leader, and she’s been working hard at adding an outside shot to her terrific post game.

St. John Brebeuf senior boys coach Len De Julius frequently reminds his players that improvement is determined by how hard you work when nobody’s watching. Travis Van Vliet, the Bears’ 6’5” senior centre, took that message to heart and enters this season with a much more versatile game than he had as a Grade 11. “The fundamentals I work on mostly are the inside post moves,” he explained. “But more recently, I’ve been trying to improve my outside game – ball handling and outside shots, three-pointers . . . so that I’m not one-dimensional.” Van Vliet will need to draw on his full skill set this season as the Bears, a traditional Single A school, move up to AA for the first time this fall.

Digging in on defence isn’t necessarily as glamorous as lighting it up offensively, but Revine Gill and the Hansen Hurricanes senior girls relish that type of blue-collar work. “Our defence is absolutely crazy this year,” Gill enthused. “That’s what we’re pretty much known for. We’ve got some quick bodies.” All five Hurricanes’ starters, including shooting guard Gill, are in Grade 11, and they’ve got big dreams over the next two seasons in the AA league. “We’ve got very high hopes for this group,” co-coach Bo Sidhu said. “Our goal this year is to qualify for provincials, and next year we want to make some noise.”

Sirban Gill has fashioned a reputation as a deadly three-point shooter, but he’s hoping to gain notoriety for his all-around game this season. With an eye on becoming more of a factor driving to the hoop and at the defensive end, the Panthers senior forward has put in a great deal of work in the weight room, and revamped his diet. He’s exchanged his beloved Big Macs for salads, and it’s paid dividends. “Fast food, chips, junk food, candy, I got rid of all that stuff,” he said with a grin. “I lost 10 pounds, so I’ve gotten way faster. I’ve been working out and shooting almost every single day.” Gill’s squad opened the season ranked No. 3 in the province in AAA.

On the outside, the main change will be a new Science World logo beside EcoDairy’s name. On the inside, the 4,500 square-foot presentation centre will be fully transformed into hands-on exhibits. “There will be interactive games, where there’s electronic and very tactile things. Especially for kids, it will be stimulating and fun and exciting,” said Bill Vanderkooi, president of Bakerview EcoDairy, the first demonstration farm of its kind in Canada. The current display board explaining a dairy cow’s anatomy will transform into a full-sized plastic cow with the organs visible and touchable. A board explaining the milking process will become a demonstration milking machine. Another board about the cow’s digestive system will become an activity where visitors guide small balls through a model of a digestive tract. Handson exhibit will grace EcoDairy From A22

big scale will allow visitors to figure out how many human bodies equate to one cow, or one chicken, in weight. Using digital technology, the EcoDairy will be able to update certain exhibits easily and offer something new to returning visitors. “That’s the beautiful thing about this, is that it gives us the opportunity to be very flexible and constantly change the content,” said Vanderkooi. Since opening in 2010, the EcoDairy receives about 6,000 visitors annually, most of them kids with school groups or families. Vanderkooi expects visits to more than double once the Science World upgrades are completed sometime around June 2014. Science World is providing design expertise in kind, while the EcoDairy’s sponsors will cover the approximate $125,000 in costs. “For us, it was a great opportunity because we feel we have a really great foundation. We have a nice facility, great location, and [Science World] can really take what we’ve got and enhance it with interactivity and games. They’re the best in the world at what they do,”

said Vanderkooi. Funding for upgrades will be provided by the Abbotsford Community Foundation ($50,000), Vedder Transport ($40,000), Nutriva Group ($20,000), and WestGen ($15,000). “We are very enthused to be working with the EcoDairy,” said Science World’s president and CEO Bryan Tisdall in a release. “Our priority is on exciting British Columbians about the importance of science and technology in our daily lives and the prosperity of our communities, and the EcoDairy is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate the importance of agriculture to our future.” Already known for its food production expertise, the Fraser Valley is stepping onto the agricultural training arena ever more forcefully. EcoDairy’s effort to educate the youngest generation about agriculture comes at the same time as a major initiative by the University of the Fraser Valley to open a B.C. School of Agriculture at the Chilliwack campus. The multi-million dollar project currently under construction will pinpoint the Fraser Valley as an agricultural research hub in Canada.

Police release video of robbery suspect

Incident took place on Nov. 10 on Whatcom Road The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) has released video footage of a robbery that took place at a Subway restaurant on Nov. 10. Police previously released a photo of the incident obtained from security video, but Const. Ian MacDonald said this did not result in enough tips to lead to a suspect. He said video was obtained both from the Subway restaurant and from neighbouring businesses. The robbery occurred at about 10:20 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10 in the 2000 block of Whatcom Road. The suspect approached an employee at the cash register, implied that he had a weapon, demanded cash and then fled. Two employees were working at the time. Neither was harmed, but both were shaken by the incident, MacDonald said. The culprit is described as Caucasian, 20 to 30 years old and approximately 5’11”. He was wearing a thick grey plaid jacket with black stripes and a hood, a grey undershirt, black baggy sweat pants, runners with white soles, and a purple baseball cap with a Minnesota Vikings logo. Trustee Cindy Schafer was re-elected as the chair of the Abbotsford board of eduction at a special meeting Dec. 3. Trustee Shirley Wilson was elected as the vice-chair. Schafer has served as chair for the past year, as well as from 2008 to 2011. The longtime interior designer has been a trustee since 2005. Wilson has also served as trustee since 2005, and is a past president of the Fraser Valley branch of the B.C. School Trustees Association. Street, Ortio lead Heat to weekend sweep Abbotsford News

Abbotsford Heat head coach Troy Ward is a man of many metaphors, and he’s frequently gone with a public transit theme when discussing his team this season. He’s waxed eloquent on the need to get his power-play personnel “in the right seats” on the bus, and occasionally bemoaned “a lot of empty seats on the bus” when the general performance isn’t up to snuff. To extend the metaphor, it’s become clear over the first two-plus months of the season that the Heat are at their best with Joni Ortio in the driver’s seat and Ben Street riding shotgun. Or vice versa. The duo led the way once again last weekend, steering the Heat to a weekend sweep over the San Antonio Rampage at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. Goaltender Ortio sparkled between the pipes both nights, turning aside 29 shots in Friday’s 4-2 win and another 27 in Saturday’s 5-2 triumph, improving his record to 11-1 on the season. Street, the AHL’s player of the month for November, has carried over his red-hot production since the calendar flipped to December. He was the offensive catalyst both nights vs. San Antonio – he scored a goal and had a spectacular assist on Max Reinhart’s game-winner on Friday, and his power-play strike late in the second period on Saturday was the turning point of the game. The Heat cruised from there, boosting their record to 19-6-2 for an AHL-best 40 points. “The word I would use is, he’s just a complete player,” Ward said of Street. “If you watch our game out there . . . Ben looks like a man compared to the rest. I mean that in the way of posture, his shift-toshift consistency, and he’s just as good with the puck as he is without it.” Ortio, who struggled in his first crack at North American pro hockey with the Heat in 2011-12, has come back a new man after a stellar season in his native Finland with HIFK Helsinki. “I’m just an overall better goalie,” he said. “That last year helped

me a lot – I played 70plus games back home, and that really teaches you something . . . My game is much more calm right now, and this time around, I knew what to expect.” ICE CHIPS: Q Friday was the Heat’s annual teddy bear toss night, and after Ben Hanowski’s second-period goal, fans threw three pickup truckloads worth of stuffed animals onto the ice for donation to the Abbotsford Christmas Bureau. The W.J. Mouat Hawks senior girls basketball team lost in the final of their Century 21 Classic home tournament on the weekend, but coach Paula Thompson wasn’t overly disappointed with the result. The Hawks are, after all, predominantly a Grade 11 squad, and there’s no shame in losing to the Oak Bay Breakers, the No. 3-ranked AAA team in the province, when you’re still learning on the job. “Personally, I thought the game went really well,” said Thompson, whose youthful squad is ranked No. 4 in AAA and fell 66-59 to Oak Bay in Saturday’s title game. “I just thought the girls played their heart out right to the end.” Alicia and Cierra Roufosse, Mouat’s 6’2” twin sisters, are used to being the tallest players on the court, but they had their hands full with Oak Bay’s outstanding 6’3” centre Lauren Yearwood, who racked

Q The Abby Senior Panthers senior boys squad hosted earlyround games of the Telus Classic at their gym last week, and ended up splitting their games. The Panthers opened with a 101-75 win over R.C. Palmer of Richmond behind 34 points from Sirban Gill, 13 from Chase Claypool and 11 from Luke Tompkins, but fell 88-80 to Holy Cross in the quarterfinals despite Gill’s 32point outing.

ALEXANDER Lawrence “Larry” Earl Alexander 70, of Abbotsford, BC, passed away, Saturday, December 7th, 2013 at Christine Morrison Hospice after a lengthy 9½ year battle with cancer. Larry was born May 9, 1943 in Smokey Lake, Alberta to George and Dilly (Stogrin) Alexander. On July 4th, 1970 he married the former Louise Stone in Mission. Larry was employed as an accountant for the federal penitentiary system at both the Abbotsford and Mission locations until his retirement in 1996. An avid sports fan, he spent many hours coaching, officiating and support local community sports including, soccer, baseball, rugby and hockey. In addition to this he also enjoyed walking, gardening and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Larry is survived by his wife and best friend of 43 years Louise, his three sons: Rob (Mirela) Alexander, Scott (Cara) Alexander and Bryon (Lisa) Alexander, daughter Laurie Ball, his grandchildren: Michael (Theresia), Shelby, Payton, Ryan, Kyle, Tyne and Bryn and his greatgrandchildren Keylan, Jaime, Alyssa and Nikkita. He was preceded in death by his parents, George (2005) and Dillie (2002) and his brother Danny Alexander (2007). A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, December 14th at Seven Oaks Alliance Church, 2575 Gladwin Rd, Abbotsford. Predeceased by her husband Leslie and sonin-law Robert Clark, Katie is survived by her children, Norma (Bruce) Abell, Allen (Merle) Horvath, Janice Clark and Sue (Lorne) Presley. She leaves, also, her 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and dear friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday, December 13, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 33333 Mayfair Ave., in Abbotsford, B.C. “ Her longtime wish has been realized…she is now in Heaven with Dad.”

HOFFER, Peter It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Pete, on Dec. 6, 2013, at the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, BC . Born in Holland on Dec. 15, 1951, Pete was just shy of his 62nd birthday. Having spent many enjoyable years with his wife, Vicki, raising their sons, Spencer and Darren on the Sunshine Coast in Halfmoon Bay, he retired from the Boilermakers #359, and moved to their summer home in Barriere, BC. An avid Äsherman, and true outdoorsman, Pete loved their family camping trips throughout western Canada and the States; their winter home being in Yuma, Ariz. Pete’s daily treks to pick up ‘cans for recycling’ along the highways (and ditches!) of Sechelt and Barriere, were a well known sight . . . and a favourite pastime . . . (gas money to be made, you know!!) His wood chopping warmed many a house in Sechelt over the years and carried right along in Barriere. Many a ‘tale’ could be told by his best buddies, Sandy Matthews and Pierre Beauregard. Pete will be dearly missed by his loving family — wife of 37 years, Vicki, sons, Spencer (Darcy), Darren (Deanna); grandchildren, whom he absolutely adored, Alexandra, Jacob, Jessica and Caitlyn, all of Ft. MacMurray, AB, as well as his ‘adopted son’ Ryan (Natalie) Anderson, of Campbell River, BC. Predeceased by his father, Cornelius, Peter is also survived by his Mom, Vera (Abbotsford), brothers – Louie (Wendy), John (Gabrielle), Tony (Gail), Fred, sister(s) Margaret (Terry), Brigette(Gordon), Gail (Todd), and Diane (Jan); and many inlaws, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles. Pete will be missed also, by so many dear friends in the Sechelt area and Barriere, as well as Yuma, Az. At Pete’s request, there will be no funeral service at this time.
