“End-of-life care is really about comfort care. It is meeting the needs of the patient and the family,” explained Debbie Lehmann, executive director of the Abbotsford Hospice Society (AHS). For over a quarter of a century AHS has been providing emotional and social support for people who are dying, including children, teens and adults grieving the death of a loved one. However, there is no hospice residence in Abbotsford – a rare thing for a city this size.

There is now an opportunity to complete the circle of hospice care through the construction of Holmberg House, named in honour of the late David Holmberg Jr., who died at the age of 48. The new facility will house 10 patient suites, 2 family suites and the full range of holistic services that AHS currently provides, free of charge, to thousands of clients each year. “For 25 years, we’ve had a vision to build a free-standing hospice residence because the

Patients will receive family members and friends in the comfort of their private rooms. They can spend precious time with loved ones on the family lounge balcony, in the dining area, or in the sanctuary. Families can watch their young ones play in a children’s play alcove, at the playground, or enjoy a quiet read in the library. AHS will also continue to provide its community services which include in-home visits by volunteer companions, support groups, counselling, and vigil services in the last 72 hours of life. a chord with visitors. “When we take our supporters on a tour, they can now begin to visualize the therapies and support that will take place in a particular space. Examples include children’s expressive therapy, family counselling, and spiritual contemplation. And then they can connect with it differently,” said Lehmann. AHS board of directors’ Chair, David Turchen agreed.

“As you walk through it, you see how it all interrelates, and works for the common goal. For me, that’s what really took my breath away when I first toured through it.” As a non-profit charitable organization, AHS relies on fundraising to build Holmberg House. The society has raised $7 million to date, but requires another $3.7 million to complete construction and $1.3 million for equipment, fixtures and furniture. The facility is set to open in the fall of 2014. However, the target date may be pushed, as construction is currently outpacing donations. “Holmberg House is being built, primarily, by community contributions. We are confident that donors will come forward to help us achieve our goal,” said Turchen. Caring for people who are dying ... and their loved ones and family to find out their needs. After this initial intake, a support plan shows the way ahead, including advocacy, resources, volunteers, or comfort care. Where needed, a trained volunteer visits the home regularly and companions the dying person through their journey, providing emotional, social and spiritual support. Family members can have their own volunteer who companions them as they anticipate the death of their loved one. When a palliative patient and family are experiencing complex psychosocial issues related to end-of-life, AHS can provide free counselling through a registered clinical counsellor.

provide a safe environment for persons facing end-of-life issues to interact with others who may be experiencing similar challenges. AHS provides a full spectrum of support for grieving individuals and families, including one-to-one peer support and companioning, dropin support, telephone grief support, ongoing semi-annual memorial services and perinatal loss support. Where appropriate, AHS also provides free professional counselling services – both one-to-one or in group settings – for grieving children, teens, adults and families.

SUPPORT FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS The death of a loved one, whether it’s a parent, grandparent or sibling, hits children and teens hard. AHS offers a spectrum of services to help them through their grief, including children’s grief support group, equinefacilitated counselling for teens and expressive therapies that allow children to process their feelings in a way that makes sense for them. We also work closely with local schools to provide support services when a student dies.

Abbotsford is the only community in the region that does not have a hospice residence for adults In 1986, the Abbotsford Matsqui Hospice Society was created with modest initial goals, and a vision for the future. These original visionaries were inspired by the origins of the hospice movement in the United Kingdom in the mid 60s. At that time, Dame Cecily Saunders first conceived the modern hospice movement aimed at relief of pain and

suffering at the end-of-life and improving quality of life. In the 70s, the movement was brought to Canada by Dr. Balfour Mount whose vision of whole person care has revolutionized the way we provide comfort to the terminally ill, changing the way we think about dying. By 1986, both the hospice and palliative care

movements were flourishing in Canada. This led the founding leaders of AHS to bring the hospice concept to Abbotsford in the form of a Society providing end-of-life support services free of charge to those in the community who were anticipating a death, facing their own death or grieving the loss of a loved one or friend.

Leaving a Legacy Ella Lister, a former nurse, held a clear vision for hospice palliative care, to see a hospice residence built in Abbotsford. Ella was diagnosed with renal cancer at age 64 and while living with her illness for three years advocated for a hospice in the community where she lived. Upon her death in 2007 AHS received more than $800,000 as her contribution to the legacy.

Tamara says that while Abbotsford Hospice Society’s sense of community is strong, a building like Holmberg House would radically transform the work they are able to do. It would ensure continuity of care between medical and social services and enhance team effort between staff, patients, volunteers and families. “I think that Holmberg House will empower patients and family members as they walk the final stages of life. Most importantly, it will allow this precious stage of life to unfold in one’s hometown, Abbotsford, and in the most dignified way possible.”

Tamara Childs manages Abbotsford Hospice Society’s Bereavement Services Program. Daily, she meets with clients who are grieving and in need of compassionate, emotional and social support. “After our first meeting, the client and I determine what kind of support plan would best suit them,” she explains. “We provide our clients with professional counselling, group support and/ or one to one support with a companion volunteer – all of whom offer qualified and informed support services. It’s about hearing people’s stories, being present in their grief, and encouraging them in their strengths and capabilities. Because of the nature of our work and home-like office environment we are a close community that really supports each other” she says. “Clients often express what a warm, relaxing place the Abbotsford Hospice is”. Tamara reflectively unpacks memories of people grieving the death of a loved one. “For me, I find hope in remembering that

People helping people through the most difficult times... JOYCE’S STORY...

GILLIAN’S STORY...

Joyce places her husband’s picture by the fireplace. His grin is framed by a sun-soaked lake landscape of water, trees, and mountain. Joyce took this picture just months before Keith was diagnosed with fatal cancer. “Keith died two and a half months after his diagnosis, just shy of our seven-year anniversary.” Joyce was immediately connected to Abbotsford Hospice Society, who helped her with everything from applications to in-home nurses and counselling on what kind of facility to seek. Joyce and Keith were eventually connected with a hospice facility in another community, since Abbotsford does not have a residential hospice for adults. “As soon as we got there, Keith looked at me and said, we made the right choice. I felt a weight lift immediately,” she explains. Joyce says that choosing hospice gave her the freedom to be Keith’s wife again, not his caregiver. “Hospice truly is death with dignity,” she says. “All the staff and volunteers made me realize that someone else could help me carry the load. Not many people want to talk about death. But there is fear in the unknown. At a hospice home, the nurses explain things, and are always there for a hug or a chat,” she reflects. “At hospice, you can be a family again.”

The death of a loved one is tragic in any situation – but for a child, who may not understand why or how these feelings are happening grief can be especially incapacitating. We often meet people like Gillian and her children who are all grieving in their own way and in need of individual support throughout their process. Gillian and her four children were connected with Abbotsford Hospice Society in 2010 after Gillian’s husband was killed instantly in a car accident. She and her four children, who were also in the vehicle, survived the crash. In addition to myriad subsequent medical concerns many emotional scars were left behind. “In the blink of an eye, I went from being a wife homeschooling my kids to being a single mother with no income and four children who were still dealing with serious injuries,” Gillian recounts. “I came home after leaving the

hospital and felt instantly lonely.” Gillian looked for resources for her children to deal with their grief, but found few. After running into multiple dead-ends, someone suggested she try Abbotsford Hospice Society. “I had assumed hospice was for elderly people who were dying,” explains Gillian. “But they have programs that have supported all of us since the accident. Once I connected with the hospice, things began to really open up for the kids.” “My youngest son suffered severe panic and was pretty much paralyzed by anxiety attacks,” recalls Gillian. “Abbotsford Hospice connected him with a play therapist, and it made a huge difference. It was a life-changing resource for him.” Through our Stepping Stones program we are here to support children and families as they grieve the death of a loved one. Gillian’s oldest daughter had an exceptionally difficult time processing her grief for the first year after losing her father. When she was ready to take the first step on her grief journey she was able to attend counselling through

Stepping Stones. We recognize the unique experience of each person’s grief journey and provide individualized emotional and social support for whatever time is needed. “The grief journey will last a lifetime,” says Gillian. “Over time, it becomes easier to carry, but other times you’ll be surprised at how hard it will be.” Gillian and her children have remained close to Abbotsford Hospice Society, and will continue to connect with individuals here for as long as they need. Here at Abbotsford Hospice Society, we have seen the Stepping Stones program transform the lives of children who were lost in grief. We have seen how nurturing a child in his or her grief—often expressed much differently than an adult’s grief—transforms the whole family. Nothing will bring a loved one back, however the support and care we provide helps those left behind to start living again.

What our community has to say... The Abbotsford Hospice Society has positively and irrevocably changed the care of individuals and their family who are living and dying in Abbotsford. The longstanding commitment of AHS to its community is an inspiration for all non-profit societies. I am delighted to see the progression of Holmberg House after so many years of work. We have been involved with the Abbotsford Hospice Society for over 25 years and became more involved in the need for palliative care when our son David was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and passed away in 2011. Hospice care provides the need for people and their families through this very difficult time. After the death of our son David, we committed to fundraise $1 million towards the building of Holmberg House, and we have achieved our goal.

In any community, hospices play a pivotal role in caring for people with advanced and life threatening disease. They provide quality nursing and medical support with the help of allied services and volunteers; their vital importance lies in that they can provide excellent palliative care – when this becomes no longer possible or is burdensome in the home or the hospital. In my experience, they can allow an ‘oasis’ of ‘quality time’ for both the patients and their families in very difficult circumstances.

What our community leaders have to say... The value of Holmberg House to the community is immense for those, and their families, who are suffering an end-oflife crisis. Abbotsford is in genuine need of a palliative care facility so the completion of Holmberg House, and the efforts of Abbotsford Hospice Society, are extremely important. People who require a caring, harmonious and comforting home-like setting during the latter stages of their lives will find all of that, and more, at Holmberg House.

Both the Abbotsford Hospice Society and Holmberg House provide a much needed service to our residents, and our community. The city is proud to have partnered with Holmberg House and to have provided the land on which it will be built. This facility is run by care and compassion—two characteristics that I believe truly mark our city’s character.

AHS and their many well-trained volunteers do a wonderful job of providing tender care for the terminally ill and comforting and counselling bereaved family and friends. They deliver caring and compassion at the level of the Angels! Success of their current capital fundraising campaign is desperately important if we are to open our own hospice house right here in Abbotsford.
