Pianist Hagen joins Timbre! in concert SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
When Timbre! Choir takes to the stage at the new Alberni District Secondary School Theatre on Sunday, Dec. 15, nationally-acclaimed pianist Sarah Hagen will join them at the concert grand piano. Timbre will perform from the Messiah, sing traditional Christmas carols and music from John Rutter as well as more popular music from the Polar Express, choir spokesperson Barry Miller said. Cory Miller will play the trumpet and Michelle Weckesser joins them from Chemainus as soloist. This will be Timbre’s first appearance in the new theatre. Also joining the choir will be the Russel Cripps Vocal Group and Alberni Valley United Church Handbell Choir. The concert begins at 2:30 p.m. Advance tickets for A Christmas Celebration are $15 for adults ($5 for children and students) and may still be available at Rollin Art Centre, Echo Centre or Salmonberry’s Emporium.

Players bring Wizard of Oz to Capitol stage Portal Players Dramatic Society presents a beloved family-friendly musical, The Wizard of Oz, as part of their 2013-14 season next February and March. Dorothy and the entire cast of Oz characters will appear on stage at The Capitol Theatre next year, starting Feb. 21. Valdy’s back Popular Salt Spring Island folk singer Valdy returns to the Alberni Valley on Sunday, Dec. 8 for an afternoon Christmas fundraising concert at Char’s Landing. Valdy, born Valdemar Horsdal in Ottawa, Ont., has been part of the fabric of Canadian pop and folk music for more than 34 years. A man with a thousand friends, from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island to Texas to New Zealand, he’s a singer, guitarist and songwriter who catches the small but telling moments that make up life.

VICTORIA – Lieutenant (Navy) Carson Stoney, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Leader for Port Alberni, has donated $1,000 to the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Stoney made the donation last Saturday at Robert Bateman’s gallery in Victoria. Stoney, a member of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets in Port Alberni, who also works part-time with Futureshop, received the retail business’s annual volunteer award, which consists of a $1,000 donation to a charity organization that Futureshop employees volunteer with. The donation from this award will go directly to helping youth join the Duke of Edinburgh program that Stoney has just started in Port Alberni. “I completed my Bronze Award in Manitoba, my Silver Award in Alberta, and my Gold Award here in B.C. It’s so rewarding to not only give back to this program but to be able to make this donation to help start the program here in Port Alberni, I’m truly grateful,” Stoney said. “This program has helped countless youth challenge themselves to become better citizens, better leaders, and better members of their community. I highly encourage any youth aged 14-24 to enroll.” The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

More than a dozen community organizations and individuals are preparing to decorate Christmas trees to give away to families in the Kuu-us Crisis Line Society’s 15th annual Festival of Trees, and still it’s not enough to help everyone this year, Kuu-us’ executive director Elia Nicholson-Nave said.
‘The kids, the families are very appreciative.’ – Elia Nicholson-Nave Recipient families were nominated by various community organizations. Seventeen sponsors will decorate and
donate trees this year. “Unfortunately, we had to turn people away this year. That goes to show there’s more demand,” Nicholson-Nave said. Decorations will be boxed up and delivered with the trees, food hampers and gifts to families on Dec. 15. “The kids, the families are so appreciative.”

Tseshaht First Nation member’s dream of playing basketball with the Team BC girls’ squad in the North American Indigenous Games is one step closer to reality. Memphis Dick, 11, is headed for the second round of tryouts for Team BC in Langley this December.
Dick made the cut after surviving the first round of tryouts in mid-October. If she makes it, Dick would be the youngest player on the team, which will be made up of girls from across B.C. “The coaches said they like what they see in her so far. They let her know what her strengths are and provided positive criticism about what she needs to work on,” father Ed Ross

Dick finished a special basketball camp held at Maht Mahs gym in preparation for later this month. The North American Indigenous Games is a multi-sport event involving Aboriginal athletes from across North America. They are being held in Saskatchewan in 2014. Athletes compete in sports such as basketball, softball and soccer, as well as canoeing, volleyball and lacrosse. Athletes try out for regional teams for each sport in each province. In basketball

‘Tis the season of parties and holiday feasting. Routine scheduled events generally fly out the window in December, as there’s many festivities to enjoy. It is a time of reflection and re-connecting with family and friends. Maintaining healthy living can be more of a challenge in this season with the
eggnog flowing, plus shortbread and candy canes generously offered. Most holidays revolve around food and traditions. If you have been successful in steps towards healthier eating and more exercise, those forward motions don’t have to go on holiday, along with your schedule. Is it really a time for complete gluttony with the abandonment of your healthy living plans? Keep it all in perspective and
release the ‘all or nothing’ thinking. Maintain moderation. It is beneficial to feel like you are not depriving yourself of life’s many treats and pleasures. Partaking in family traditions and friend’s indulgent baking fits into the balance of healthy eating. Becoming more mindful of internal cues of hunger and identifying reasons for eating will help with regulating food intake. Portion control with regards to meals and sweets is a simple
strategy for enjoying the tempting treats without overindulging into feeling bloated and sick. Think of your appetite with a ‘hunger meter’ in mind. How hungry are you before eating and is this food something that you really want, or is just being offered to you and you don’t want to refuse? The slower you eat, and more you are thinking about how full you are getting, can provide clues to what your body really wants/ needs. It will take about 20 minutes for the signal of fullness from your stomach to reach your brain. Eating faster will increase how much you eat and generally lead
to feelings of being overly stuffed. Starving yourself all day leading up to a special buffet meal (that you may want to gorge on) will throw off the healthy balance. Continue with eating a regular, high fibre breakfast to help set the stage for a more balanced day. Enjoying normal meals/snacks throughout the day can help keep things in good check. Your body will thank you. Remember, it is not the last supper you will ever eat. Heartburn, bloating, indigestion, gas, diarrhea and abdominal pain are symptoms that indicate overeating too often, and these are your body’s

One trend I’m not sure I like is placing a screen in the centre of the dash, like putting an iPad Mini in the permanently placed in middle of the dash. It doesn’t look particularly polished, almost like an afterthought. Audi’s new A3 sedan, arriving in March, has the ability to lower their screen, which I think is a better approach.

The launch event for this new CLA was held in the Washington DC area, leaving historic Georgetown and heading towards Maryland’s ports and navel academy. This provided
some excellent stop-andgo traffic opportunities in Washington’s morning rush hour and then getting to stretch the new CLA’s legs on fabulous Interstate highways. The power plant is a direct injection turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a healthy 208hp. The power goes through a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission to the front wheels. The more expensive and powerful 355hp CLA 45 AMG has an all wheel drive (AWD) system as standard equipment but the base CLA 250 will get this important option sometime in 2014. Power is fantastic, especially if the transmission is placed in the sportier mode. This car cruises effortlessly at highway speeds and passes
with ease.
Verdict
We are heading into a wonderful period of lower priced cars, or vehicle fitted with more standard features. This new CLA 250 is a perfect example of this. Other new entries include the latest A3 that arrives in March and starts at $31,100 and then the new BMW 1 Series will arrive in about a year. For the price of a wellequipped non-premium brand Canadians can now get a premium German sedan for about the same price.

NIC’s remote science lab takes flight It’s an exciting time for North Island College’s Remote Web-based Science Laboratory (RWSL) and its team as science students from around the globe make use of this ground breaking technology.
Initially developed by Albert Balbon, NIC’s Supervisor of Distributed Learning & Interactive Technology, and Ron Evans, a NIC math/ science instructor, to allow NIC Astronomy students located in remote
regions access to a telescope and camera combination, RWSL has evolved into a full suite of audio, video, hardware and software. The equipment and technology allow users to view, interact, control
and collect real data from experiments using actual science lab equipment, in real-time, over the internet. Students will be able to work together, passing control of the telescope between them.

No Wunder ‘Dogs traded BCHL: | The Alberni Valley Bulldogs find a physical defenseman in Quinton Wunder. The Alberni Valley Bulldogs gained one and lost one on defense after making a couple of moves. The team announced that it picked up sixfoot two 190 pound defenseman Quinton Wunder from Simi Valley, CA. Wunder comes from the California Titans U18 program. He is expected to be a defensive-defenseman that takes the body and likes to play physically.
‘His physical play should be a big presence.’ – Kevin Willison “We look forward to Quinton adding an element that is needed on the back-end,” Bulldogs head coach and general manager Kevin Willison said. “His physical play should be a big
presence and he seems very keen to help us achieve our goals.” Wunder appeared in all 24 games this season for the Titans, notching seven assists and 32 PIMs. He also leads all defensemen on the Titans in plus/minus with a plus eight. Wunder will wear No. 25 and will be in the line-up this weekend for the Bulldogs. To make way for
Wunder, the Bulldogs released 1995-born defenseman Brodie Clowes. The former D-man was initially acquired along with future considerations from the Whitecourt Wolverines (AJHL) forthe CJHL playing rights to Luke Fenske. Clowes appeared in 12 games for the Bulldogs, but he had troubles finding his stride and lacked the physicality that the team was looking for.
Midget Bulldogs play big The Van Isle Ford Alberni Valley Midget Bulldogs continued league play. In mid-November, the Bulldogs travelled to Victoria to play Victoria Racquet Club. On day one, the Bulldogs came away
with a 1-1 tie after some outstanding goaltending from Jessie Geddes. Sunday saw the Bulldogs host Campbell River. In a close game, with only one penalty for each team, the final
score was 3-3. Logan Henson, unassisted, scored the first goal for the Bulldogs, the second goal came from Codie Beecroft, assisted by Henson and Dave Friel, the third goal was scored by Ethan
Sundstrum, assisted by Keagun Selva and Henson. Bullodgs goaltender Ryan Price was solid in net. Last weekend, the Midget Bulldogs played a league game in Nanaimo.
