City sidewalks, busy sidewalks, Dressed in holiday style. In the air there’s a feeling of Christmas. Children laughing, people passing, meeting smile after smile, And on every street corner you hear; Silver bells, silver bells, It’s Christmas time in the city. Ring-a-ling, hear them ring, Soon it will be Christmas Day. City street lights, even stop lights, Blink a bright red and green, As the shoppers rush home with their treasures. How silently, how silently The wondrous gift is giv’n, So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heav’n. No ear may hear His coming But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive Him still The dear Christ enters in.

For Christ is born of Mary And gathered all above While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love. O morning stars together Proclaim the Holy Birth And praises sing to God the King And peace to men on earth.

Is born of David’s line. The Savior, who is Christ the Lord, And this shall be the sign. The heavenly Babe you there shall find, To human view displayed, All meanly wrapped in swathing bands, And in a manger laid. They looked up and saw a star, Shining in the east, beyond them far, And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night.

Vanillekipferl Christmas crescent shaped vanilla shortcrust cookies For the pastry: 150 grams soft butter 70 grams powdered sugar 8 grams vanilla sugar (preferably branded one) 100 grams white ground almond flour 200 grams white flour For the coating: home made vanilla sugar (see above) Start by mixing the soft butter, powdered sugar and vanilla sugar smooth. Then add sieved white flour and almond flour to the mixture and incorporate the ingredients with your hands to a smooth pastry. Don’t work it out anymore or the dough won’t hold together later! Keep it to rest minimum 1 hour in the fridge or in a cool place. I keep mine always overnight, so that the flavor in my cookies turn more intense. Once ready to be used form the dough into a sausage shape with a 2 cm thickness. Cut thick slices to that each should be around 20 grams heavy. Preheat the oven to 200 Celsius. Roll each “sausage” pastry slice into a smaller sausage with pointed end and shape it into a half moon/crescent form.

Place them onto a baking tray, each with enough space around to rise a bit, and bake them for 10 minutes at 200 Celsius to a light yellow shade. While the cookies are baking, prepare a plate with the homemade Vanilla sugar. Add the cookies to the homemade vanilla sugar in the plate, once they are finished baking and they have cooled down for at least 1-2 minutes and roll them and coat them well with that sugar. Best stored in a metal cookie box with baking paper and apple slices on top. Note that the Vanillekipferl cookies are very breakable when coming out of the oven, that is why you should give them 1-2 minutes to rest. In that time they harden while being in the contact of air. It’s important to roll them into the homemade vanilla sugar when they are still hot, so that the sugar sticks on the cookies. Rolt Hagedorn

ave yourself a merry little Christmas Let your heart be light From now on our troubles will be out of sight. Have yourself a merry little Christmas Let your heart be light From now on, our troubles will be miles away. Here we are as in olden days, Happy golden days of yore,

Faithful friends who are dear to us, Gather near to us once more. Through the years we all will be together, If the fates allow, Hang a shining star upon the highest bough And have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

ood King Wenceslas looked out On the feast of Stephen When the snow lay round about Deep and crisp and even Brightly shone the moon that night Though the frost was cruel When a poor man came in sight Gath’ring winter fuel “Hither, page, and stand by me If thou know’st it, telling Yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling?” “Sire, he lives a good league hence Underneath the mountain Right against the forest fence By Saint Agnes’ fountain.” “Bring me flesh and bring me wine Bring me pine logs hither Thou and I will see him dine

When we bear him thither.” Page and monarch forth they went Forth they went together Through the rude wind’s wild lament And the bitter weather “Sire, the night is darker now And the wind blows stronger Fails my heart, I know not how, I can go no longer.” “Mark my footsteps, my good page Tread thou in them boldly Thou shalt find the winter’s rage Freeze thy blood less coldly.” In his master’s steps he trod Where the snow lay dinted Heat was in the very sod Which the Saint had printed Therefore, Christian men, be sure Wealth or rank possessing Ye who now will bless the poor Shall yourselves find blessing
