purchase. When you’re cooking, make extras that you can reheat and use to feed the family during busy times. ➎ Ensure all the family is looking their best If you can, buy a few new items of clothing for all the family. There’s no good reason to celebrate Christmas in a faded old blouse. This is also the time to freshen up your haircut, get a manicure, and pluck your eyebrows.
With that in mind, it’s time to start making lists, cooking, and cleaning. ➊ Use a calendar Write down all the parties you already have scheduled. If you want to go on outings with family or friends, note them down as well, including a trip to the country, skiing, skating, or sliding. ➋ Send party invitations and write your Christmas cards Mail or email party invitations as early as possible in December. Print off a nice family photo and use that for your invitations and greeting cards.
➌ Decorate the house Hang a few electric wreaths outside. Inside, decorate the Christmas tree, and arrange a few pine branches in a vase. Now you’re all set! ➍ Cook smart Plan your menu and draw up a detailed list of all the food you have to
➏ Buy the gifts Make a list of the Christmas gifts you have to buy and avoid leaving the shopping until Christmas Eve! ➐ Clean strategically You don’t have to clean your home from top to bottom, but at least make sure that neglected areas are spick and span. Don’t hesitate to use a home-cleaning service if the job seems overwhelming. — Toolbox

Nothing can take the place of a Christmas tree when it comes time to decorate our homes for the holidays. The tree is the focal point of the Christmas décor and sets the tone for the style and colours of all the other festive decorations. The pleasure of decorating the tree is what counts the most, whether you choose to have a natural or an artificial one. Both types of trees have their pros and cons. The advantages of a natural tree: • It fills the house with a wonderful aroma • It has a natural look (which is always more beautiful) • It’s an ecological option — natural trees do not contribute to deforestation, as they are cultivated for this purpose. Gas and oil use are minimal in their production; they can be composted; and they are produced
locally or regionally • It doesn’t require storage space The advantages of an artificial tree: • It is simple to set up • It doesn’t lose its needles • It doesn’t need to be watered • If kept for more than 10 years, it could end up being less expensive than buying a natural tree every year To avoid a “busy” effect when decorating your Christmas tree, choose a style or theme for your decorations. Here are a few examples: monochrome decorations, antique look, modern style, food theme (figures made of gingerbread or pastry), or a wild touch (feathers, synthetic fur, reindeers). Once you’ve chosen your theme, take the time to find decorations that go well together and that will create the look you want. — Toolbox

Yes, it’s possible to stay healthy over the holidays It’s the same every year: during all the seasonal festivities, you’re so busy that you finish the holidays feeling exhausted and dispirited. Before deciding that you hate this time of year, why not consider a few tricks that can help you keep feeling energized and ready to return to routine in January. FOUR TIPS FOR A MERRY HOLIDAY 1. Plan ahead instead of stressing out. If you’re hosting family or friends during the holidays, draw up a plan of action ahead of time. Decide what has to be done and use a calendar to
schedule a few tasks that can be done in advance. Above all, avoid leaving everything until the last minute. Ask your family for help or hire a specialized cleaning or catering company if it’s too big a job to tackle. 2. Take proper care of yourself. Use the down time between parties to rest and get some exercise. Get out in the fresh air, skate, ski, go to the gym, or treat yourself to a massage. 3. Think about health and cold prevention. Not only does December mean more frequent parties and gatherings, but it’s flu season, as well. Prevent viruses from spreading by following
these simple rules (that many people ignore): a. Wash your hands often with soap and hot water, especially after going to the toilet and before cooking. b. Cough into your arm, not into your hand. c. Stay at home if you’re sick. 4. Avoid overdoing it. Learn to decline some of the invitations that are being offered to you. Look at your agenda and calculate honestly whether you’re up to the event or not. Remind yourself that you have the right to say you’re tired and need to rest. — Toolbox

Amazing Christmas gifts under $25 It can be quite a challenge to find a gift for less than $25, at least one that the recipient will not want to re-gift immediately. Here are a few ideas to help you out. FOR HER Lots of small gifts could make her smile: the latest bestseller, a reading lamp, Ce line Dion’s or Michael
Bublé’s latest CD, a yoga mat, a yoga or Pilates DVD, a relaxation CD, a glamour cosmetic bag, a purse table hook, a smart phone case with a trendy pattern, a teapot, cocktail glasses, a pretty carafe, or a restorative hand cream. FOR HIM There are many gift ideas to please the men:
a good detective novel, a remote control holder, a reusable stainless steel water bottle, a headlamp, beer glasses, ice-cube whiskey rocks, a Swiss knife, a battery-operated screwdriver, a work trestle, an organizer for storing nuts and bolts, a tool box, a game of darts, or a silly cooking utensil such as a hamburger mold for perfect patties.

FOR CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS Think of gifts to entertain or fascinate them: board games (Monopoly, Risk, Clue, Life), a Justin Bieber CD, a Hello Kitty home phone, a personal diary, a spark ling pendant, or a pretty moneybox. FOR BABY Any useful article for a baby is bound to be a success: pyjamas, onesies, sleep bag, rattle, or teething ring. — Toolbox

MAIL If you’ve mailed some of your gifts, you’ll be happy to know that parcel tracking is now available with a click of the finger. Some big companies specializing in mail and package deliveries also have their own apps. GREETING CARDS There’s no lack of apps for sending your holiday greetings to all and sundry.
