BC Institute of Technology (BCIT) train conductor students are back for the seventh run of on-the-job training in Port Alberni. Two groups of seven students from the Lower Mainland are in the Alberni Valley this week to take four-day practicums as part of their program, Industrial Heritage Society volunteer Kevin Hunter said. The IHS coordinates the logistics of the practicum, and provides track preparation and safety monitoring during the sessions. Port Alberni is the primary location for student practicums. Squamish is used as a secondary location when there are larger numbers of students. The groups will be working 10-hour days over four days to complete their 40-hour practicum requirements, Hunter said. “We do safety orientation on day one but from day two on they’re running trains between the roundhouse and McLean Mill,” he said. It’s the seventh year the partnership between the IHS and BCIT has brought students to Alberni. At 14 students, this week’s class is the smallest offering in the history of the program. As well, all of the students are male, which is an anomaly, Hunter said. “Usually there are one or two female students. I don’t know why there aren’t any this year.” The smaller group surprises Hunter because of the demographic shift in the rail industry. “There are a lot of baby boomers who will be retiring out and need to

be replaced,” he said. “They’re going to need people to get into the industry.” Working with trains is a dream come true for one candidate. “I was obsessed with trains growing up so is this my dream job — gee, what do you think?” said student Zach Ozeg. The 18-year-old Ozeg grew up in Ladner, B.C. where he graduated from Delta Secondary School in 2012. Ozeg worked in a warehouse since graduation but said he really hasn’t done much since. Ozeg loved trains while growing up. His first memory of a train is riding to Squamish as a threeyear-old with his parents. He even had a large track and car layout in his room.

really had any close friends. People thought my obsession with trains was strange,” he said. Ozeg’s boyhood interest gave way to a computer

when he entered his teens but his love of trains never waned. He scanned online for a way to get into the industry and found the conductors course at BCIT. He was put on a waiting list but this year was notified of his acceptance. “I was just ecstatic when I got my letter,” he said. The course has been fulfilling for the most part, he said. The class never got to use the tracks at BCIT because of equipment issues, and attention span during railroad culture lectures has been a challenge. “But nothing compares to this. Nothing compares to the real thing of actually being outside on the tracks and with the cars,” Ozeg said.

Contingency plans are being drawn up as School District 70 is losing its two school psychologists for at least this year. One of its psychologists is taking maternity leave and another is taking time off for personal reasons, SD 70 Superintendent Cam Pinkerton said. Both are expected to be back next school year, he added. The district hedged their bets by having two psychologists on staff in case one couldn’t work for some reason. “It’s coincidental that both of them will be off at the same time,” he said. The pair provide psychological services to all 14 schools in the district. They also provide critical testing for students who require one of three special needs designations and accompanying services, Pinkerton said. “To access this you have to have a designation by a psychologist,” he said. “But the supports are already here for students who need them.” The district has canvassed for a temporary psychologist but have thus far been unsuccessful finding one. District staff are also exploring contracting the position to local providers, Pinkerton said. Students who require testing will be categorized as high priority and tested now by staff before the psyhcologists leave, he said. “And If there’s a gap in service then we can also go to another district that provides it.”

Port Alberni’s newest liquor store is one step closer to becoming a reality. Port Alberni city council voted in favour of proceeding with a development permit application for a liquor store to be built on a vacant lot on lower Third Avenue, albeit with a slightly modified site plan. The developer and city each hired a consultant to review the site plan for the lower Third Avenue location. The city’s consultant suggested slightly modifying the parking area in order to accommodate delivery trucks turning into the lot. The change alleviates concerns Coun. Ten years ago, Chantal Stefan and three friends assembled 80 small packages of sugar cookies and hung them on dumpsters in the back alleys of Edmonton. By morning, the packages were all gone. So began the Everybody Deserves a Smile (EDAS) program, which this year has expanded through western Canadian school systems to John Howitt Elementary in Port Alberni. Teacher Jennifer Gray met Stefan while attending Vancouver Island University, in the teaching program, and started helping with the smile program. “What we’re so excited about is

through this project we’re able to teach so many students the power of empathy,” Gray said. Students at John Howitt will make 190 care packages—one per student—and put them in hand-painted bags with homemade cards. In Port Alberni, the smile bags will be distributed through Port Alberni Shelter and Bread of Life. Each bag will have woolen socks, mittens, scarves, toques, toothpaste and toothbrush. Drop boxes for Everybody Deserves a Smile are at Echo Centre, Trends Design Team on Margaret Street and John Howitt Elementary School. Donations will be accepted until Dec. 13. n elder in residence will improve high school completion and college transition rates for aboriginal students, School District 70 Superintendent Cam Pinkerton said. SD 70 staff has approached North Island College about sharing an elder in residence between the two institutions. If the plan goes through the person will be in place by September 2014. Elders cultivate social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing of Aboriginal students. They help increase awareness and understanding of history, traditions and culture for all students and educators,

Pinkerton said. The initiative will also enhance Aboriginal students’ sense of belonging in the education system, something that is sorely needed, Pinkerton said. There are more than 230 students of Aboriginal ancestry attending Alberni District Secondary School. Some 95 per cent of Aboriginal students who go to ADSS graduate. But only 42 per cent of those who complete Grade 8 finish Grade 12 six years later. “That’s one of the intents of this: that it will boost the completion rate but also with transitioning to North Island College,” Pinkerton said. The initiative has always been a priority, but one without

resources to give it flesh and bones, Pinkerton said. North Island College president John Bowman recently took a tour of ADSS and saw a small space set aside for an elder in residence. “He said they had a need for one at the Port Alberni campus but couldn’t fund it full time so maybe there’s an opportunity for us to split the cost and the use,” Pinkerton said. The position will also help fill a critical cultural role, Aboriginal education worker Angie Miller said. The elder would continuously impart to students the principal of Haa-huupa, which translated means to be advised, guided and taught traditional teachings. “That’s

something we see missing here,” Miller said. The person could also connect with other elders in the community and work on social studies and social justice initiatives with school staff. Miller said she already serves as a de facto elder in residence with some ADSS students who have gone on to post secondary studies. “There’s always a few students who have graduated who come back and see me,” she said. “I’d be honoured to serve in this kind of role when I retire.” North Island College spokesperson Susan Auchterlonie confirmed that Pinkerton and Bowman discussed the possibility of jointly funding an elder-in-residence for the Alberni campus and ADSS. “The discussion has not gone any further yet, but the college would like to bring the idea forward to its regional aboriginal advisory committee for consideration,” Auchterlonie said. The NIC website notes that the college has elders in residence in its Campbell River and Comox Valley campuses.

RCMP hunt man who followed teen (filler) Port Alberni RCMP are on the hunt for a suspicious man who followed a 15-year-old girl and asked her several times to take a walk with him. According to an RCMP press release, the incident happened on Nov. 19 at 3:30 p.m. The girl initially noticed the man following her as she walked along Sixth Avenue and Wallace

Street, RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said. He was following her closely, turning onto every street with her. The girl encountered a family out for a walk near the corner of Fourth Avenue and Redford Street, and noticed that the male was suddenly gone. Police concerns are heightened because the man asked the girl several times if

she would take a walk with him. The girl refused and quickened her pace to get away from the man, Allan said. The girl reported the incident to her parent when she returned to her home that evening. The girl told police she didn’t know the man, and that he didn’t tell her his name.

The man is described as a sixfeet tall medium built Caucasian male in his 40’s with dark brown or black short hair. He was wearing a royal blue hooded jacket, faded blue jeans and black shoes. Police are warning residents to take steps to tighten up their personal safety measures. Walking in pairs in

populated and well lit areas is always recommended, and contacting police either during or immediately after an incident. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact Port Alberni RCMP at 723-2424, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Help our kids, donate coins Two solitudes on B.C. farmland Next time you’ve got a pocket full of change, think of the kids. Launching in the Alberni Valley News this week is Black Press’ Coins for Kids campaign, previously called Pennies for Presents. We’re collecting nickels, dimes, quarters, loonies and toonies (and we’ll still take your pennies if you have some left) here at the News office to again benefit the Port Alberni Toy Run. Every dollar collected through our campaign, which runs until mid-December, will benefit children in the Alberni Valley through the Toy Run’s generous sponsorships of activities such as First Night and Halloween Swim, and so many others. The Toy Run also donates to local organizations that run programs for children. Now in its 17th year, Coins for Kids has raised more than $600,000 since its inception. We at the Alberni Valley News have raised more than $2,000 in the two years we have been running the program, and are proud to participate again. To donate, please drop by the News office at 4656 Margaret St. during business hours, or call us and arrange a pickup. properties. Currently, farmers can put a mobile home on their property for an elderly or infirm relative, but nothing with a permanent foundation. Once that relative moves or passes away, the home is supposed to be removed. Hanoski said a sewage system for such a residence costs around $12,000. Add the temporary foundation, skirting, well hookup, power, landscaping, driveway, and a mobile home that will lose its value if it has to be moved, and the property owner takes a loss of $150,000 or more. That’s why the removal rule is routinely ignored in rural B.C., Hanoski said. These second homes are the only rental stock there is, providing modest income for marginal farms, and should be allowed permanent foundations. Two zones, two different rules From / A08

I asked Bill Bennett, the cabinet minister in charge of the latest agricultural land review, about a rumoured proposal to split the province into two zones with different rules. He declined to comment, but described the case of Fort Steele Farms, the East Kootenay community’s only

Mailbag: Feedback on axe the tax or tax the axe Tax increases too taxing To the Editor,

In recent years, property tax and service tax increases here have been huge and there have been no serious attempts to reduce either. Moreover, civic wages, salaries, and benefits have continued to climb, apparently above recent inflation increases. There’s no escape from this bad situation except for older city taxpayers who wish to defer property taxes and defer the borrowing costs that come from adding six percent per year to their total tax bill until they die or their houses are sold. All others are stuck in an untenable position. And nobody at city hall seems to care. What should be done by city council is to freeze city property taxes for three years. Central to doing this, of course, is a threeyear freeze on salary and benefit increases for all city staff and management who are obviously quite well off now (unlike many other citizens in this depressed community). Can’t be done, you say? Well, Penticton,

a city of 33,000 people, has done it. That city reduced property taxes by half a percent in 2011, and froze taxes for both 2012 and 2013. Unfortunately, Penticton is the exception rather than the general rule amongst the high-onthe hog communities in B.C. The situation must change here and elsewhere and now is the time. Public pressure at budget time would help.

Taxes better in Port Alberni To the Editor,

Re: Richard Berg’s letter on property taxation in Penticton. I had a look at statistics for municipal taxation (provided by the province). Penticton indeed appears to be doing a great job keeping tax increases low. Their total municipal taxes collected increased by 1.6 percent from 2010 to 2013. Port Alberni’s increased by 4.6 percent. The Consumer Price Index for B.C. over the last three years has risen by 4.8 percent. So both Penticton and

Port Alberni have had municipal taxation increases below the CPI over this period. This is not true of very many municipalities in B.C. Residential property tax increases in Port Alberni in recent years have not gone into significant spending increases, they have instead offset significant tax reductions that the city has provided to industry in our community in order to keep them viable. With our recent residential tax increases in mind, I checked another statistic provided by the province, the “Taxes and Charges on a Representative House”. This is what the average house in a town pays on their tax bill annually. For 2013 in Penticton it was $3104. In Port Alberni it was $2860.

‘Estates’ sadly up for sale To the Editor,

It took longer than I thought it would—more than four years—but the outcome is exactly as anticipated. The former River Bank Estates trailer park

property is for sale. Asking price is $1.6 million dollars. This long-vacant property has seen no development since homeowners, tenants and their families were evicted by a group of long-time Port Alberni investors. Many of those affected lost their homes and equity. A large number also lost their health and quality of life in the name of a development that never made it past the sketch stage. The price paid by the former River Bank Estates homeowners and tenants in the name of “progress” has been far too high. I sincerely hope any future development proposals presented to Port Alberni City Council will be given thorough scrutiny so that any residents possibly affected will not have to pay such a high price.

Make vaccine more available To the Editor,

A couple of weeks ago, I had been considering whether I should get this year’s flu shot, when contracting the disease made the

question moot. It was a ghastly experience, which led to a painful throat infection. I learned my lesson, and next year I’m getting vaccinated. Still, I’m one of the lucky ones, as I have access to the flu vaccine. I was very ill, with a possibility of developing pneumonia. I’ve had it before. If flu feels bad, pneumonia is beyond awful, a terrible disease and global killer. While vaccines exist to prevent pneumonia and other common diseases, the poorest parts of the world don’t have access. GAVI Alliance is the world’s provider of vaccines in poor countries, and is on track to immunize an additional quarter of a billion children by 2015, preventing nearly four million deaths in the process. Canada has long supported GAVI, which is now running out of funding. It’s crucial that we step up and pay our fair share at replenishment. My recent illness showed me how vulnerable we all are to disease, and how privileged we are in the West.

Most of us are not very good at waiting in everyday life or in our spiritual lives. We want what we want and we want it yesterday. We want it on our own terms, just like we envisioned it. Consider then what it must be like to live thru a major disaster. What must it be like to be without the basics that keep us alive. Around the world people need those basics - they line up for hours and even days for water and food. The people of the Philippines need help now. The Canadian Government is now matching dollar-for-dollar all donations made by individual Canadians to Typhoon Haiyan Relief efforts from November 9 to December 9th. Give if you can and pray for medical supplies and able men and women to help those who are physically injured. Pray for God to move on the hearts of those who are able to contribute their gifts or resources. Pray for provisions to feed the people and safe drinking water. ~1 John 3:17-18

School District 70 has started the process of adopting a district-wide policy regarding sexual orientation and gender identification, superintendent Cam Pinkerton said. Administrative officials presented the policy to trustees at their meeting on Nov. 12. Entitled 511: Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity, the policy seeks to ensure the board and community work together respectfully regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. It is also incumbent on the board to adopt strategies, policies that promote respect and support diversity. Policy specifics include understanding

Many people are adopting gluten-free diets for a variety of reasons. While such a diet means passing on foods that contain wheat protein, such as certain breads, crusts and baked goods, it doesnâ€™t mean giving up on grains entirely. Many grains are acceptable for those adhering to a gluten-free diet. Gluten-free foods are required for people who have Celiac disease, an autoimmune condition of the small intestines that is triggered by the consumption of wheat protein. While people with Celiac disease have to avoid foods that contain gluten, many more people choose to remove gluten from their diets. This includes people with gluten allergies or sensitivities that are not as severe as Celiac disease but can cause some gastrointestinal discomfort. To avoid gluten, a person has to remove wheat products, barley, spelt, rye, and triticale from his or her diet. However, there are many other foods that can be eaten. Plus, flours made from grinding other grains can be used in place of wheat flour in recipes. The finished products may just have less of the doughy or

elastic consistency that is a hallmark of gluten. Here are some grains men and women on gluten-free diets can still enjoy. * Oats: Though they are traditionally gluten-free, but must be processed in a gluten-free facility. * Buckwheat: Despite the name, buckwheat is not related to regular wheat and is not exactly a grain. It is a relation of rhubarb. * Quinoa: This is actually related to leafy vegetables. Quinoa is often eaten like you would eat rice or pasta, but it can also be baked into bread and cakes. * Rice: Many people avoiding gluten turn to rice as an alternative. Rice flour can be substituted for wheat flour in many recipes. * Corn: Cornmeal can be used in baked goods. * Amaranth: This is a tiny, ancient grain. It is a complete protein and has more iron than most grains. Other gluten -free flours are made from chick peas, flax, nuts, tapioca and potoato. he lady who has been a breath of fresh air in the Alberni Valley’s quest for good air quality is moving onto to new challenges. Bernadette Wyton announced that she

stepped down as chair of the Air Quality Council of Port Alberni at the end of October. “In terms of air shed management, I’m hoping that the council can move to a place where a new structure maybe more beneficial,” Wyton said. “And I’m hoping

the city and Alberni Clayoquot Regional District can be more involved in air quality leadership.” A writer, Wyton says she’ll have several projects on the go as she and husband Keith spend more time in Bamfield. “I’ve got work here, there and everywhere,” she said.

Wyton has been chair for 10 of the last 12 years that the council has been in existence. The chair coordinates various projects the council wants carried out, finds the funding to do them then carries them out. The chair’s work is underwritten with a management fee built

into project funding applications, she said. Examples of air quality projects Wyton has recently been involved with include a wood stove exchange program, mobile air testing and a workshop for Grade 5 students. In a presentation to Port Alberni city council, Wyton

asked councillors to broaden the scope of support to the organization. A first order of business is to find her successor. “A coordinator needs to be found to keep driving the council and doing work,” she said. There’s lots of work to be done in the winter months

because of inversion days, Wyton said. “The air is cleaner in the summer months, but that’s even more of a reason to protect our watershed.” Wyton has met with the ACRD air advisory committee and requested the same support, she said. reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

emolishing the old Alberni District Secondary School was the right thing to do, says School District 70 operations manager Greg Rowe. More than 50 per cent of the old ADSS on Burde Street has been bulldozed down since the operation started in July. The classrooms in the rear of the building are gone. The auditorium, gymnasium and classrooms on the north side of the building are set to come down. The cafeteria and old library aren’t scheduled for demolition. “The district may have found some other value in those, I don’t know. I just know it’s not part of the demo,” Rowe said. During the new high school discussions, some opponents of demolishing the old school lobbied for it to be renovated instead. But demo workers discovered that this was easier theorized than done when they got past the husk of the building during the tear down. “There were leaks in the roof all over the school and the water pipes and electrical were degrading,” Rowe said. “You see this to a certain extent with some other schools. But in this case, in my opinion it (demolition) was the right choice.” Workers uncovered more asbestos than was originally planned for, Rowe said.

“The school has undergone a lot of renovations over the years and this explains some of it,” he said. “Most of it is in the auditorium. But it isn’t uncommon to find these things in older schools.” The issue has delayed the tear down, which is expected to be completed by May 2014. The former steady stream of people stopping to watch the tear down has waned, Rowe said. “There’s still a bit of interest but it’s tapered off. Audi’s road ahead paved with more than good intentions 2014 Audi A3 Cabriolet/S3 MONACO: Over the next 12 months or so, consumers are going to be treated to an onslaught of new entries into the premium market. Not to worry, the next wave of German sedans and convertibles are of a more affordable nature. Recently Mercedes Benz introduced their all-new CLA 250 at an eye-popping price of just $34,000 for a sleek and sexy sedan. Next year we will see the introduction of BMW’s new 1-series and 2-Series sedans, coupes and convertibles. Audi has been ahead of the curve as they helped pioneer this entry-level segment with the original, the A3 sportback, sold in Canada for years. The all-new Audi A3 sedan will arrive in March of 2014 and the convertible and more powerful S3 sedan will arrive in the fall of 2014. This week I had a chance to drive both the convertible and S3 in Monte Carlo, a full year ahead of their introduction here. Audi is one of the fastest growing premium brands and a big part of that is the variety of cars they offer. Unfortunately, we will no longer get the sportback, but the fact we get the rest of the line of A3s is exciting for buyers. Looks The A3 is built off a shared platform with VW called MQB. This platform was a significant investment for the VW group as it is lighter, bigger and stronger than the last Golf platform and provides a sturdy basis for the A3 Cabrio and S3. The new Cabriolet is 60kg lighter than the outgoing European model, yet the wheelbase is longer and the interior room and trunk more ample. It could be argued that Audi is building some of the most attractive cars these days and these smaller products still convey the same sense of power and solidity that the bigger products portray. Hitch up snowplows the white stuff is flying I know I wrote about winter driving last week and the snow and rain began to fall in various parts of the province but please don’t blame me for this first blast of chilly weather. I’m here to help and at the risk of bringing on a blizzard, I thought I would share some information on snow plows. For most people who are just using a plow for clearing their own driveway, a straight-blade will more than likely be just fine. Snowsport offers a personal plow that is perfect for the homeowner. This system attaches to a front mounted receiver just as a boat trailer would. The U shaped bracket is connected to the receiver and the snow blade rides up and down on these bars to allow for change in the terrain your plowing. Because there are no hydraulics involved, all you do is back up and the snow blade lies back skimming over the surface. When driving forward the blade automatically re-engages for plowing. When you are finished, lift the blade back over the push frame into the transport position. The cost of this option is $1,644. K2 is another brand of snowplow designed for the homeowner with acreage. Designed to work with a front receiver hitch, just like the Snowsport, it simply slides in the receiver and

If you use a plow to make money, then you will want to be able to do the job quickly and efficiently, so you may want to go with the multi-position plows. locks in place with a hitch lock. When it comes to the warranty, be sure to know exactly what you are getting and what the warranty covers. Some only cover parts, while others cover parts and labor. Warranties are usually either one year or two years; so pay attention to the warranty. Culture shock works both ways for CWY YOUTH EXCHANGE: | Canada World Youth exchange students find challenges, motivation, pride in each other’s home countries. The Alberni Valley News is pleased to be hosting two students from Canada World Youth while they are in Port Alberni. This week we asked Brogan Baker and Linh Khanh to introduce each other to our readers. Linh Nguyen Thi Khanh, 20, is the Vietnamese volunteer here at the Alberni Valley News one day a week. Born and raised in the capital of Ha Noi, Linh applied to many exchange programs as she is very interested in volunteer work, and was eventually accepted into CedecoCanada World Youth exchange. Brogan Marie Baker, 24, is from Cochrane, Alberta. Brogan, Linh and 16 other Vietnamese and Canadian volunteers are in the culture exchange program between Vietnam and Canada. When she was asked why Brogan enjoyed the program, she answered that she wanted to learn lots of things. Moreover, her parents had

hosted students before and there were opportunities to do volunteer work. Brogan believes that it is a good chance to enhance skills for her resume such as: running events, setting events and organizing events. The youth spent three months in Vietnam doing volunteer work and now they are doing the same in Port Alberni. One aspect of the program that has helped Linh explore Canada is her host family. Linh and

her counterpart from Canada were welcomed into a host family here in town, just as they were in Vietnam. During the next three months they will get to know their host family here, similar to the first three months back home in Vietnam. It is Linh’s first time in Canada and when asked how she is enjoying it, Linh responded “short time but I like environment in Canada, clean and fresh, people friendly and helpful. I think I will be deeply falling

in love with Canada.” Being in Vietnam for three months was a challenge for Brogan. Her first feeling in Vietnam was very hard, but it was not too different from being in Canada. However, when she went to the province of Hoa Binh

where she stayed for three months, it was very different. She experienced culture shock near the end of her stay in Vietnam. She was tired of people and tired of food, so she just wanted to stay at home for three or four days in a row.

“The solution is to be open-minded and listen a lot,” said Brogan. Now she loves Vietnamese food, especially “the wonderful vegetables.” Brogan is so proud of what she has done in Vietnam. The volunteer team

had a remarkable contribution for community: they planted trees, built a volleyball court and a playground for kids, taught English, painted a mural, and ran sector projects in schools for older youth, raising awareness of sexual health. More specially, each volunteer had a personal project to do. “My personal project (was) to sew a traditional Muongethnic minority outfit in Vietnam. It was so interesting,” Brogan shared. “My personal project helps me improve personal skills and improve sustainability.” Linh also finds things different in Canada. The volunteer work differs between the two countries; in Vietnam it was almost all group work like planting trees, building a playground and cleaning up memorials. Here in Canada it is more pairs working together and not so much as a group, one of the many things to get used to in a new country. Tipping in restaurants is also something new to her and hard to navigate. Linh’s personal project has followed her to Port Alberni. With the help of some of the other volunteers, Linh has been making wallets, passport covers and headphone wraps to sell as small Christmas gifts at local craft shows to raise money for world running NGOs. A large cultural event is also being planned for January where Linh’s materials will be available. The students have various placements with businesses and organizations around Port Alberni. Linh and Brogan are also working at the Ha-Shilth-Sa newspaper and Westhaven Care Facility. Brogan revealed that the volunteer team would be here from Nov. 2 to Jan. 23.

Alberni woman turns love of sport into U.S. business Carmen Delano was part of the Port Alberni Gymnastics Academy from an early age. For 14 years she participated at various competitions in the Alberni Valley, Vancouver Island and the B.C., and received a number of awards. she was also an avid competitive swimmer. More than 12 years ago Delano, whose family still lives in the Alberni Valley, moved to California where she continued her passion for the sport of gymnastics as a coach and a business person. Recently, Carmen Delano opened her second gymnasium to instruct more than 300 junior athletes, ranging from three years old to young adults. The five-hour grand opening of the sports centre, attended by more than 300 people, was launched with the attendance by members of the Chamber of Commerce, parents and athletes, followed by a variety of activities, including demonstrations of the students and coaches’ gymnastic skills, a variety of games, trophy presentations, food, and outdoor fun events. Delano has repeatedly expressed appreciation for the support and the lifetime experience she gained while attending her classes in the Port Alberni Gymnastics Academy, said her father Orlando. These classes gave Delano a sense of determination, discipline and focus, and led her to build her own academy from the ground up. “I have wonderful memories of my Port Alberni coaches, my fellow athletes and the volunteers, most of them parents, and the fun I had on trips to the various competitions,” she says. “Here in California

I have made lots of friends and met wonderful young people who enjoy gymnastics. In a short time, Delano has become a popular figure in this
